Stumbled across Tanabe after our usual Japanese was not answering. We are so so glad because we now have a new favourite Japanese and cannot wait for restrictions to be lifted to be able to dine in here and enjoy the complete atmosphere. Everything we ordered was delicious and so flavoursome, even being slightly cold after we were a bit behind picking up. The level of care and finesse taken with every dish was astounding and very much appreciated. So glad to have a delicious local Japanese with great service š
Crispy tempura
Fresh sashimi
Crazy good teriyaki chicken
Intensely flavoured Oven baked nasu dengaku
All the tastes! š
Great food... love the dessert:)
Better food or at least equivalent to great restaurants in japan. A must try ! Hot or cold dishes all consistently excellent. Dont be fooled by the decor !
Been to Tanabe twice this year.
Reasonably priced restaurant - able to feed five adults for ~$150.
The wait staff are attentive and are accommodating to requests (I.e no wasabi in sushi rolls).
Quality of the fish is high and the food is always tasty and satisfying.
Would recommend to anyone in the Mordialloc area.
My go-to every time Iām in Mordialloc. The food is delicious, very reasonably priced, thereās BYO and the staff are always warm and friendly.
Having a great dinner at night! The food is overall good, all staff are friendly, and the environment is nice. The best authentic Japanese food that Iāve eaten in Melbourne. Iāll be back for next time š
New updated: went there for third time with ordering a Nasu Dengkaku š and Fish Teriyaki.
New updated (26/6): ordered miso soup, Tonkatsu, and Agedashi Tofu.
Overall itās still the best! š
Came here for dinner during the week. Food was delicious and fresh. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Will definitely eat here again. Looking forward to it.
Cannot fault! Delicious take away order tonight, a lot of care taken in separating and labelling correct sauces with certain fish. Will be back very soon! Yum!
Soo glad we managed to get a table as it was pretty much booked out. We ordered a few things to share and enjoyed it all! Started with the tofu and gyozas, followed by the sushi boat, prawn tempura and beef. Then ended with the green tea ice cream. All delicious and served with a smile by the friendly and accommodating staff. Looking forward to going back.
Best Japanese you will find in the suburbs!! So incredibly fresh and delicious! My only word of advice is make sure you book because it gets very busy!!!
Donāt be fooled by first impressions. Yes the decor could be improved and it is an old fish and chip shop, but the food here is amazing. If you like Japanese food you will love tanabe.
Monday night out with my partner. It has been sometime since our last visit as we have become busy. Food has not changed since... Was what we expected and was delivered as it was. Not those expensive eatery, well portioned, priced, busy vibe. Here and there the floor staff is yelling out orders which resembles being back in Japan. A regional gem!! The sushi boat is a must try!!!
Really friendly staff on arrival, promptly shown to the table. Great menu, lots of choices. We had lots of things to share and couldnāt fault anything. We had pork gyoza, came with a citrus soy and option of chilli oil, very tasty. The tuna sashimi entree size was very generous and very fresh, almost melted in my mouth. We tried the special tuna wrapped in seaweed and Pablo crumbed with a wasabi aioli, also a generous portion and very tasty. The karage chicken was nice, not to heavy on the batter, full of flavour and the ponzu dressing complemented it. The steamed rice was to perfection, like little clouds! And finally the tonkatsu was perfectly crispy panko crumbed. The restaurant was busy for a Tuesday night and we can see why. There is an option for BYO too. Great meal!
Service - 10/10
Couldn't ask for anything more
Food - 9/10
Ordered the entree tempura, tonkatsu and sukiyaki. All was amazing although the tonkatsu was slightly dry inside. The sukiyaki was particularly fantastic.
Ambience - 10/10
Exactly what I look for in a traditional japanese restaurant. Clean, homely and well presented.
We live nearby and have been here four or five times over the last few years and each time it has been wonderful.
If not for having another Japanese restaurant closer to where we live, we would be here all the time.
The food is all so fresh, beautifully presented and prepared so carefully.
We were back last night and while some reviewers have said they think it is expensive here, I completely disagree. We always share lots of things so it can bring the price up. Having said that, the total came to $79.00 for three people and everything was perfect. No complaints here!
The staff are also absolutely lovely. The only thing that may bother some is the amount of time between serving the next menu item. However, we found the timing made sense - you wonāt feel rushed here.
The decor is in need of a revamp, as is the signage but the warm hospitality and delicious food make up for this.
Would 100% recommend to anyone searching for Japanese in the bayside area.
Gotta say wasn't expecting much going in but food was quite tasty. Enjoyed the beef tataki , even better if it was marinated in less sauce. The sukiyaki was delicious with the broth and pieces of beef, prob ma fav dish of the night. Dessert I had was green tea ice cream with red bean pancake , loooved the green tea, so very smooth and creamy. Yanagawa hot pot shimeji hotpot was quite ordinary though. Overall tasted very good, just on the expensive side.
Best value , best tasting, best service. Brings me back to my japan days.
Recommend the banquet. $50pp allowing you to taste alot of the menu at once.
The food here is absolutely delicious! Have tried nearly everything off the menu and it has all been great. My favourite though has to be the sushi boats and the deep fried chicken bites (tatsuta age). You need to order the chicken bites!!! Super tasty!!!
Monday night dinner date for 2.
Service when you walk in and till the end - excellent. The staff are very polite and welcoming.
Food - Agedashi tofu (nice light way to start your meal), beef & salmon tataki (definitely order these!), king prawn, fish & veggie tempura (light batter, crispy, not too oily which is good) and sushi/sashimi boat for 2. The boat was good, though my only comment would be to have more sashimi than nigiri, I didn't find the nigiri as fresh tasting. We ordered black sesame icecream to share, which was very smooth. Ordered just the right amount of food.
Ambience - not your fancy typical done up type restaurants but I didn't mind it, it was clean and felt cosy enough. Not a big place, so booking is a good idea if you go in a big group.
Hands down one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. The freshness of the food, the service and the fact it's still BYO = perfection! If your dining for two, ensure you get a table down the back as the front area can get a little loud.
Tanabe is clearly the best Japanese restaurant in Mordialloc in 2016 in my book. They are providing a good range of Japanese cuisine e.g. Sushi, sashimi, donburi etc. Service here is really good, attentive and friendly. The price range is reasonable and you will always get what pay for. I wish Mordi would have more of choices when it comes to Asian food but for now let's go enjoy some good Japanese at Tanabe. Highly recommended.
I think the food is good and very good - but not excellent
Chicken karage was nice. Big serve.
Pork katsudon ok.
Both dishes presentations could have been better.
Sushi Sashimi boat very fresh. Quite a lot for 2ppl.
Sukiyaki was yummy and lots more in there then at first thought.
Aim to go and try more dishes soon
Shared gyoza, tatsuta-age (fried chicken), spinach, shogayaki (sautƩed pork), tonkatsu, special moriawase, icecream & sweet red bean pancake. Savoury dishes felt very homely and moriawase was delicious and fresh. Rice wasn't gluggy which was an automatic thumbs up from me!
Thoroughly enjoyed the homemade green tea & black sesame icecream. Can definitely taste the flavours which wasn't over powering nor sickeningly sweet..
Authentic Japanese on this side of town with friendly service. Will be back :)
Amazing little restaurant, we often grab take away and this Japanese doesn't disappoint. I always compare others Japanese food to this benchmark. I can't wait to go back!
Epic Japanese cuisine, so fresh & well prepared meals. Genuine and traditional cooking style from the best Japanese chef... Mordialloc is lucky to have it in the main street.
We had dinner here during the week. The food was actually average. We ordered the Gyu Tataki, Sashimi and Sushi special and a few dishes. The Gyo Tataki was good but it was too much salads on the plate than the beef. Most of the dishes were decorated with too much salads. The sashimi and sushi special plate was good but the portion of food was small compared to the price. Overall, the restaurant atmosphere was good, there were a lot of local people dined there, service was good, staff were friendly. Seafood was fresh.
Amazing fresh japanese food. I have been there several times and it never disappoints. The marinated sashimi tuna with avocado on the entree memu is a must.
Great service, lovely staff. Food was refreshing and high quality. Had the boat which was delicious. We were a bit hungry after so we ordered the rare eye fillet and the spinach dish which finished the meal off nicely.
What a lovely restaurant! We came here for a special occasion, and it did not disappoint. Lovely fresh, delicious food and friendly service. Ā Thank you - we will be back. Ā A+++
OMG we love this place, we could eat here every night.
Instead we do take away twice a week from here!
It's really amazing, so fresh & lovingly prepared.
Try the Zuke Maguro, just epic & the Gyu Tataki is mind blowing ;)
We love our local Japanese, staff are friendly but they do
know us by first name! Keeping up the great work.
If your planning on eating in, it's worth booking ahead (day's prior)
I have been before and ate in a loved the food and service.Ā I walked in off the street.Ā Tried to call to make an appointment tonight but the phone number given didn't ring and hung up.Ā Tried several times with the same result.Ā Not good.Ā Please fix this problem asap.Ā regards, Allan
Ate here last night. Decent Japanese food around the area. Great service - staff are friendly, take reservations and food is served promptly. We ordered the beef tataki, sushi and gyozas to share and they all tasted great! With the mains I enjoyed the teriyaki chicken - the chicken was tender and full of flavour. The pork tonkatsu was a little chewy. For dessert we had the Hoji tea ice cream, which is roasted green tea ice cream and it was delicious!
Our favourite Japanese restaurant. Friendly service - you are always greeted, fare welled and made to feel welcomed here. The sashimi is melt-in-your mouth fresh, Agadashi Tofu is flash fried, so its crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, the seared beef is gorgeous and beef steaks cooked to perfection, with the right balance of flavour in the sauces. All washed down with a warm Sake completes the night. Reasonably priced for the quality of produce. The decor is basic but then again its not a flash restaurant although the food is of a high standard.
Mobile review. Servings are quite small (and expensive). We did enjoy the food although it's very Western friendly Japanese food.
Been meaning to go to Tanabe for years now and regretting not going sooner. The food was absolutely amazing and found it to also be reasonably priced. Definitely making this place a regular
Best Japanese Ever. I have had multiple opportunities to try some of Melbourne's best Japanese food and I can honestly say this some of the best food that I have had let alone the best Japanese food in Melbourne in my opinion.
One of the best dishes is the Tonkatsu with a side of rice, as well as the California Maki and Sushi Moriawase.
Had a great night here on Monday. Food and service were excellent. Great value for money. Will definitely be back.
Wonderful staff Gracious happy wait staff. Four people - twelve courses - and everyone has been very pleased. Hot Sake in Melbourne in August Great idea!
In Melbourne for the weekend and taken here decor of a suburban shop but the food, service and price makes it a winner if I lived here I would be a regular
Nice, noisy, good service. I'm not a huge fan of Japanese food, but this local place lived up to its star ratings and we enjoyed it. Small serves but excellent quality. Typical Japanese presentation, faultless in every respect.
First timers at this restaurant. Very good Japanese food that deserves the great rating it has. Will be going back very soon.
Nice food. Very popular so be sure to make a booking. The decor is a bit ordinary and the lights are too bright. Otherwise it's really a good place.
Authentic Japanese Food. We've been here many times, we really enjoy our Japanese food, and this place has some of the best in the Bayside area. You need to appreciate the food to appreciate this restaurant, as the Decor isn't Fantastic, however if you like Japanese food, you'll appreciate this place.
Best Japanese around!. This is a fabulous restaurant with beautiful food and friendly staff. A significantly better alternative to the Futaba dump in Cheltenham.
This restaurant is fantastic! Service is perfect, food is phenomenal and prices were reasonable. Had a wonderful meal- will go back for sure!!
Easily the best Japanese around. The sashimi is the freshest and tastiest ever, but the tempura, horenso, beef tataki + gyoza appeal to more western tastes. Service is friendly and efficient. 5 stars!!
Love the food, Sushimi boat and tempura is my regular dish. Fresh, vibrant and delicate. You must eat here!!

I haven't eaten-in yet, but have enjoyed takeaway from Tanabe twice in the past month. I was absolutely thrilled to discover that the food at Tanabe is really GOOD!! It's beautiful Japanese cooking. The takeaway menu is small, but we enjoyed everything we ordered (miso, gyoza, agadashi tofu, a yummy eggplant entree, a main course beef dish and seafood tempura). I'm looking forward to booking a table and trying the sushi. This restaurant is such a welcome addition to Mordialloc. Go there if you want top quality, authentic Japanese cooking.
Best Miso Soup Ever. I'm local & go to Tanabe quite regularly. LOVE Japanese food & have eaten at many a Japanese restaurant - including Nobu (Crown). Both my hubby & I agree their food rivals Nobu (except the Miso - best ever by far). Very friendly staff & chefs. Can't speak highly enough - very fresh & reasonable prices for the quality. The banquet offers great variety too. The only thing is the restaurant is an old fish & chip shop - and the set up remains where they are cooking under the big extractor fans out amongst in the seating area - so you do come out smelling quite 'foody'. But we feel it's worth it!
Staff are friendly, food is always fresh and amazing. We get the miso to start, gyoza, tempura and sushi sashimi boat each time. We dine there every fortnight for all of the above reasons. We have taken a friend who lived in Japan for 20 years and said it was the best Japanese food he had eaten out of Japan. Restaurant and decor neat and basic, the food is why we return.
Went there on 28 Oct for dinner. The staff (all Japanese) were very friendly and attentive to us. Food was slightly above average. Portion was smaller than I thought we spent about $30 per person yet doesn't feel very full. Overall, we walked out of there happy.
Amazing food, great service and well priced. Finally a Japanese restaurant in this area to rival Irori
My favorite Japanese restaurant, traditional japanese food, fresh sushi and sashimi and really friendly staff. Highly recommend!
Agedashi to die for :). Tanabe is a really nice little restaurant, everything tastes really fresh. The agedashi tofu is probably one of the best ones I have had and I never got to japanese and not order that! Tempura is light and crispy, all their fish tasted nice and fresh and in general everything I have tried has a nice flavour.
My only complaint is because its an old fish and chip shop or something like that you are sitting in the same room as the food is being cooked in so I went home smelling like a piece of tempura :)
Other than that, nice clean food, nice staff and a good little place to eat.
Fantastic. Fast service, fantastic recommendations. We started with Miso Soup (of course) - it was homemade which is fantastic to see for a change- with a few drops of sesame chili oil, then moved on to the gyoza (awesome!), then we had Sashimi Moriawase, all fresh, all fantastic. For our mains we ordered Chicken Terryaki and Sukiyaki with fresh egg dipping sauce. Both were fantastic and flavoursome. Dishes were cleared away instantly and service was polite and prompt. Greatly recommended!
JAPANESE CLOSE TO HOME YAY!. We waited with anticipation for Tanabe to open, and its nice to know there is some decent Japanese close to home. The chef used to work at Megumi in Frankston so this is his first restaurant of his own.
The place itself is clearly an old takeaway joint so it really needs to be refitted and painted PROPERLY. It already looks as if its been there for 15 years, bad paint job, bad seating set up and service area.
But the food was pretty nice, we had some special sushi roll and they were nice, but nothing out of the ordinary (and they didnt give me wasabi with it).
I had the pork and onion panko crumbed skewers were nice, served with hot mustard on the side which i thought was odd, but i like hot mustard so no biggy..but wouldnt the authentic thing to do for adding heat to dishes be to add wasabi?!?
We had some tempura and that was great; light and crispy. but again didnt stand out from any other Japanese places we have been.
They dont have a liquor license yet (mid March i think) and they take FOREVER to clear tables, when we arrived there was an empty table next to us with empty plates and scraps left on it and that stayed there until we left.
But its decent Japanese and worth the shot!
