Review The Rocks - Mornington

Wonderful spot of exploration of your taste buds. The good: views and sea breeze/ attentive service/ food selection- fresh seafood-oysters and oysters! Bad: nothing to see here The ugly: seats are a little uncomfortable. I really had to look hard to bring it to your attention. Thank you team we had a wonderful experience.

eclectic fare on the pricier side. it's located in a great spot. it did get quite busy on Saturday night, so i'd recommend this place if you're not in a rush. the service was good & they all worked hard. our waiter managed to memorise our entire food order, i was pretty impressed! the dishes were very appealing & delicious! we ordered a bunch of small plates to share with the table & found that it worked well & allowed us to try a little bit of everything.

What beautiful fresh seafood that was carefully thought out with their flavour combinations! We had the seafood experience and every dish was amazing, from the lemon myrtle mignonette, to their miso and kombu butter mussel broth and the xo sauce with scallops! Great staff, beautiful atmosphere, will definitely be back!

Amazing food! Lovely crew! Wonderful view! What more could you want. Highly recommend. We had the crab slider, oysters, chicken Bao, chips (for the kids), Gyoza and some delicious beers 🍻 yum!

This is $25 worth. (If you can see the photo) It took 4-5 times just to communicate: 1 x fish n chips (as you can see, 1/2 a fish) 2 x potato cakes I asked for battered fish. Then they charged a fee on the tap n go! Greedy, get it together. If my child wasn’t so sick with cancer, I’d of gone back for: A) the $25 worth B) a refund

Amazing restaurant. Very happy with the service and food. We have been to the Rocks twice now and always leave satisfied and full

I didn’t find the service very warm from some of the staff. Had to call someone over to get our order taken. Food was really enjoyable though. Not the cheapest but was a nice treat.

We did not have a booking when we came in but we got lucky that a table is open for 1 1/2 hours. The service was excellent and we love our food especially the spareribs. I love the idea of sharing plate. Price is really basically near enough the same as the other restaurants we’ve visited in the Main Street. Me and my girl friends enjoyed it there. Staff are attentive and has attention to details. Will definitely come back again with my family.

Was contemplating between The Rocks and some other restaurant but glad we decided to come here instead. The Rocks was a solid choice.

Keeping it short, The Rocks had all the qualities needed to make the dining experience pleasant. Delicious fresh foods, prompt friendly service, and a great selection of wines straight from Mornington. Very safe bet if you are going for a nice romantic seafood dinner. My favourites were their Tempura Oysters, Seafood Spaghetti and Lamb Shoulder. They were all bloodly delicious. Can't say they were the best I've ever had but definitely above average. 0 complaints. Also, would love to try their Seafood Platter next time. Too bad they didn't offer at the time.

It was too dark for us to enjoy the view at the time but I have no doubt the view's sick during the day considering how it's located right by the pier. In fact, go for a walk towards pier. It's dark and intimate - such a great bonding opportunity if you know what I'm saying. There were heaps of people fishing which was pretty cool as well.

A great way to top off a day trip to the picturesque Mornington peninsula region would include a stop for lunch at The Rocks, situated right on Mornington Pier.

We sat right by the window which opened up with an incredible view of Port Phillip Bay.

Staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive. I can’t fault the service.

The one gripe I had was the small serving my partner and I received on our seafood platters. Perhaps the kitchen can fill the plates with complimentary sides and improve the design of the plates? One king prawn, really? I’m sure they can afford to be a bit more generous and throw a few more prawns, clams or scallops on the plate??

The quality of the fish was fresh, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from a seafood restaurant situated right on the water.

The sweet potato fries were crunchy, seasoned with sea salt and accompanied with aioli, lovely but overpriced.

Time for dessert - the profiterole served with chocolate iced cream was quite nice. The waitress poured chocolate syrup over our profiteroles which was a classy touch. The only advice here... top it off with some crushed unsalted peanuts there you go ... perfection! The great coffee deserves a mention here too.

The rocks is a nice restaurant. Me and my girlfriend went here during a storm, sat outside and watched the rain with a seafood platter. The platter was massive, although not too filling (a good thing!). Would definately go back here.

We were served by a fantastic young gentleman (Michael I believe his name was). He was on top of everything, could not have asked for better service. The food was great, restaurant ambience was nice too. Would highly recommend

Coquettes and barramundi were amazing. Lemon myrtle vinaigrette is delicious on oysters
Amanda Hon
Crab croquette was basically deep fried mash potato. How disappointing. Even Japanese croquettes you can buy frozen are better! Mussels in white wine was incredibly inedibly salty. And drowning in what looked like broth rather than a sauce. When queried they said it is because the mussels were local and fresh from the sea. Hence why they were salty. Complete and utter nonsense, do they think that we are that ignorant? I’ve cooked live mussels from Mt Martha countless times and never once have they been that inedibly salty. Obviously you never salt the sauce though! (Unless tasted at the end and it needs some but it’s rare). Tomato mussels were not as salty though... go figure. Grilled seafood platter was ok but a bit overcooked especially the squid. Seafood pasta a bit claggy. In short nothing was good either very average or inedible.

Dined at the rocks with a couple of friends a couple of weeks ago. The weather was perfect so we opted to sit out on the deck. We were all not too sure what to expect as the reviews for this place are very mixed - some love it, some suggest otherwise.
🍴dumplings, eggplant bao, bbq whole calamari and zucchini noodle salad with poached salmon. Standouts were the eggplant bao and the whole calamari. The calamari was tender and not chewy. All of the food tasted fresh.
💁🏼‍♀️ the servers were lovely, no complaints. The prices of some menu items is a bit outrageous such as two prawns (yes, XL, but still) for $26... The overall atmosphere of The Rocks is laid back and chilled, however the menu elicits somewhat high dining prices.
Anne
Rocks used to be amazing. The seafood was fresh but portions really small, oysters were tiny (and Tasmanian so shouldn’t have been) mussels were tiny and the white wine sauce lacked flavour just very salty. The prices are top end, $22 cocktail $46 porterhouse (no sides just meat and potato). Prices are up there and food doesn’t match. View is amazing and wait staff were great.
Snowflower
Great service. Amazing view of the sea. Oysters were fresh. Good portion size - not too big. The chocolate tart was super yummy.

This RESTAURANT refuse to give me a INVOICE!!!!!

Long wait on the food, very disappointed next to the bay but everything is NOT FRESH, expect the oyster

Tasmania Oysters.
Fresh

Schnapper Ceviche
Like the flavor of the Thai style corianda sauce, not too fresh

Lobster Bun
Is a No No, can't taste the flavor of lobstor and taste sticky and kind of raw, highly not suggest.

Wagyu Beef Dumpling
Wagyu Beef is fully cooked... No much mixer and texture, very very dry.

Mornington Mussels
Horrible way to cook it, and Not Fresh

Spaghetti seafood
I can taste the fridge from the seafood 😂

Fish and chip
This one was the most disappoint one. Not fresh.

Shark Bay blue swimmer crab croquettes
Feel like a frozen croquettes i bought at the Woolworth.

Green salad
Fresh

Worst part I was asking for the invoice when I pay, the waitress said to me they don't print out invoice for people and said they throw it out after they sent out the food. What a joke

Perhaps should report to the ATO

Great service and delicious food with a fantastic view of the sea. Extensive wine list and range of dishes. We began with betel leaf salmon and miso eggplant which were delicately and thoughtfully balanced. For mains we had the whole grilled flounder and pork schnitzel on the bone. The flounder was perfectly cooked and melted in your mouth. The schnitzel had the ideal ratio of batter and pork and was perfectly spiced.

Came here on a Saturday to check out the beach and the rocks. This place has a real nice view of the water. We ordered the fish and chips each and some oysters to share. The fish was fried perfectly - crispy thin batter and tender fish. The chips were crunchy and moreish. The oysters were fresh and tasted of the sea. Service was a little slow. We waited half an hr between our starters and mains. Otherwise a great lunch.
Birdman
Warrants a 3.5 but I just can’t get past the size of the scallops for entree, at $6 a pop for a scallop the size of 2 5 cent pieces stacked on top of each other... very little flavour too. Snapper ceviche was good and had nice flavours and ordered the prawns which were fresh but probably a bit too much going on on the plate. We ordered muscles and although we seen others coming out with bread ours didn’t until one of the staff realised but then brought out a very stale piece of bread which was very careless I thought.
Rachel V
I was excited. The view, the atmosphere and staff were excellent. That’s where it ended.
Menu is Asian inspired and lacklustre.
We had a few starters..
Gyoza- nice but could get in any Japanese takeaway
Frittura- fried anything but as long as it was dipped in aoli it tasted like something
BBQ prawns - ehh ok
Then the mains. Husband was not enthused by anything and I ordered the Thai green curry (without fish). Just vision soup ...
Yes I am upset. $148 including wine for a night I wish to forget.
Prices ridiculous for ‘casual dining’
No thanks
Added a current menu .. your welcome
Li Lisa
Food is fresh and tasty- but overpriced. The grilled calamari was too little for $39. Grilled broccoli was over cooked. I guess 30% of the bill contributes to the view and location.
Breamjung
Nice restaurant with good view and friendly staffs. Fried calamari was nice, salmon miso something was ok but we love crab burgers so fresh and crispy !! We had a great time there !!
Chris Hughes
Lovely aspect, interesting Asian influenced menu showcasing seafood - love choice of small & larger plates but sharing the best!! Great place for a long lunch with local wine options
Kelly Loudovaris
Amazing Oysters !! Wow.

Delicious Thai coconut green curry with the white fish.

Service was excellent.

Spaghetti seafood was 8/10

The roasted beetroot salad was soaked in too much oil / vinegar.

Vivi Susanti
I would say the place is super nice, lovely view the 3 star is mostly because of the bland foods. I tried salmon teriyaki and that was wonderful. Not a fan of their main course though, too bland for me ._.

I love this place because of the view!!! But I dont think the food is worth the cost however... i had the fish and chips and quite bland... decor is outdated.

Mornington. It's like Toorak by the sea has been invaded by North Fitzroy and Richmond.

Down by the marina, there is a place, upstairs near the pier and the boats, and if you are fortunate, on a cool and breezy day right at the end of the school year, just before Christmas, you can snaffle a tabe at 'The Rocks' right up against the railing overlooking the water.

My paternal progenitor and his partner arrived at just on 7pm and we were squeezed in as the last table available. Drinks were had, and they were nice. The atmosphere was charming, but the slow roasted lamb shoulder.... food-gasm.

We all thought it might be nice, but the flaky supple slip off the bone lemon hinted brilliance of this dish was simply amazing.

I live, literally, hours away from Mornington. It's a pig of a drive to get there and a cow to get back home, but if this stays on the menu? It's a journey I'd take fortnightly at least. Simply exquisite.

To reiterate... food-gasmic. It's a word now. I'm owning it.
Alex3095
Using their website I requested a table outside with a view. On arrival we were led inside, to the back of the dining room near the kitchen.

I understand lunch can be a casual affair but I draw the line at men being admitted wearing only thongs, boardshorts and tattoos. Especially when I'm spending $70/head for a meal. There are pubs with stricter dress codes.

Food was good but not remarkable. I won't be returning.
Vicki
Food is nice and fresh, but apart from that i don't have many positive things to say.
Over priced for what you get and the service is just shockingly bad. You'd think a place with such a good rep would be able to manage offering drinks and clearing plates. It doesnt even have to be busy for a table of two get get forgotten. I guess bigger tables with more numbers bring in more money so they get priority? That's how it felt the last time my husband and I made then regrettable trip down the hill to this place.
Not worth the time it takes for the wait staff to take your order.
Used to be good, but gone down hill significantly.
I wouldn't waste my time.
Gina
I agree with others that this place may be overrated. The view is amazing but the food here was disappointing. Seafood wasn't the best. They need to source better quality seafood for the prices you pay for. But its definitely better than the downstairs venue.
Julie James
Abosulatly amazing for see food, love their spaghetti so much! Defiantly go eat in this place every time visit Mornington. Will recommend to my friends for sure
Dwjackman88
Absolutely delicious! Had the Tender Otway Ranges pork belly ribs, slow braised and BBQ'd for 4 hours, with jus and crackling. Green Tea Salt crispy squid with yuzu mayo for the starter. Definitely recommend!
Matilda Jeffrey
Lovely staff and great sea views. Delicious food and great quality. They have a fish tank where you can see your food before they cook it. You will not go home hungry or unhappy. Definitely worth it!
Gracie
Fabulous food and service. Oysters were very fresh and finger lime sauce were special. The place was warm and comfy and staff were friendly.
AdLee
Voted best seafood restaurant in 2015 and 2016, I expected awesome fresh seafood dishes. Ordered the frutti de mare spaghetti. Taste was good, but not enough sauce. Made the spaghetti dry. My friend who ordered the same dish has 2 prawns but I only had 1 overcooked prawn. The whole calamari was perfectly cooked, delicious. Unfortunately, I think this restaurant is overrated and not worth the price.
Even BOX on collins street, Melbourne CBD is better although it didn't meet expectations.

Our first restaurant after moving into the area.
Food: excellent - entree, main and dessert! Must try the spiced apple 🍸 - it is divine!
Ambience: excellent - a table for two along the window. It was crowded and busy but not too noisy for a dinner date.
Service: outstanding - vigilant without being obtrusive and very friendly.
Would definitely return and try other foods on the menu.

Atmosphere: The atmosphere was gorgeous. Fancy but not intimidating. The perfect place to go for my Mum's birthday dinner

Service: A slow start after it took a while to be noticed (however we were early for our 6pm booking so there weren't many staff around) however, they really did pick it up from there and the service was exceptional. Especially the kiwi waitress who went out of her way to bring extra napkins and wet wipes and offer extra bread. Even though we didn't we had other commitments later that evening and she picked up on that and ensured we were able to order promptly meaning that even though we only had an hour and a half we were able to have appetizers, mains and also dessert and coffee. Props to the kitchen on the speed also.

Food: Perfect, I'm already dreaming of going back there and I will (even though I live 3 hours away). I had the mussels in the Singapore sauce which were messy to eat (or maybe thats just me in general) but exactly what I'd been craving and they were such a generous portion too (especially with the extra bread), my mum had the BBQ squid which she was ecstatic.
For dessert I had the pannacotta which wasn't too sweet and exactly how I like my dessert.

Ultimately I could not recommend The Rocks more, and will be back for some more mussels as soon as I find a spare weekend!

We had the most lovely time dining here. Really good food. Partner had BBQ calamari. Delicious. Really good service. Was pricey but worth it

It's a beautiful place with great view. The sea foods are very fresh. The waiter is so nice. A wonderful lunch!我们偶然来到这里,很惊喜!drinks here are also good! I want to introduce the rocks to all of my friends!
Rachel Zhou
The Rocks has got a wonderful view which makes it irreplaceable here. However the food is not good in taste, not in appropriate portion either. It has a bit of Asian fusion which is quite surprising. The price does not match the quality, would not recommend.
Amanda Nissen
Great location, fresh seafood and delicious cocktails but far too pricey. Came for a family dinner recently, ordered very modestly for a party of 7 plus two babies and the bill came to $650! For what we ate, it was NOT good value for money. Plus we were charged cakeage for some side plates and spoons with a knife to cut and serve our own birthday cake.
KMac
Loved the view! Plus the cauliflower salad and whole baked snapper. Great service too. Thoroughly recommend this place and can't wait to go back on a balmy evening.
Luna Chyld
The view of this restaurant is spectacular and the service is very friendly. The food is overpriced and decidedly lacking in quality.

The cheeseburger ($24) had a very dry, flavourless and over cooked meat pattie with an undercooked piece of thick bacon on top. The sauce was unimpressive and the burger was fairly unpleasant to eat. The fish and chips ($33) had bland, tasteless fish that honestly resembled a fillet-o-fish pattie with an eerily similar sauce. The stand out of the meal was the chips and the glass of wine. At these prices that should not be the case. Incredibly disappointing.
Elena Arbatova
Best steak ever! Well done chefs! Thanks a lot. I enjoyed dessert too. Will come again for sure. And recommend to my friends and family. Service was fantastic!
Zoe Garkinis
Used to come here often a few years back, then didn't visit in a while until now. The menu has changed to more Asian style meals. Tonight we were unlucky, everything we wanted from the menu they had run out of! (Recommend not coming for a late dinner). Ended up ordering the green tea noodles which were average and not worth the price, not much crab in it. Seafood spaghetti was apparently good though. I guess you're paying for the views. Service was friendly but overall wouldn't rush back.
Brunchlover
I'm not a big seafood lover and was slightly concerned when I first looked at the menu - so much seafood on offer I thought I might just be eating salad while my husband lapped up the seafood selections! But I quickly found we would both be happy as there were actually quite a few other options for me! We were with friends and started with cocktails. All were fabulous! We ordered a tonne of food to share. Overall we were all really pleased but there were some stand out dishes. Here it goes with a rating out of 10 for each:
Squid (10)
Lobster roll (7)
Vegie okinimiyaki (5)
Dumplings (7)
Oysters (8)
Lamb shoulder (10)
Cauliflower salad (5)
Vegies (7)
Service was good and the atmosphere was great. Highly recommend!

Bo
View was good and weather. Food quality is decent, a little pricey.. most of my downpoints is in terms of service. It ruined my mood and the atmosphere to be told by one of the floor staff not to put my hand up to get attention.. I'd be fine if not for the fact we already were waiting awhile for someone to come back and take out order.
Lauren
Such a lovely place overlooking the water at Mornington. The meals couldn't be faulted everything was amazing! From soft shell burgers that melt in your mouth, oysters for starters and dumplings
Then for mains fresh calamari with roasted capsicum and Schnapper- flavours were delicious! Thank you to the staff for the great service and being helpful in recommending food and drinks
Ann
My goodness! Another prime example of an overpriced and overrated restaurant in Mornington. The service was quite poor and the food itself was disappointing. It was a pity because this place is in a prime spot and it's sad to see such a great opportunity go to waste. Wouldn't recommend.
Meow Ngoh Ng
Service was great and I love how the waiter introduce and recommend their dishes.
The fusion oysters were really tasty with the wasabi paste and the mussels' texture was just nice and fresh. The letdown was the fish and chips which tasted rather average. Nice place to walk around after dinner so I would recommend people to come.
Hnv
Came for a long lunch, nice view, decent foods. Ordered their signature fish and chip, mussels with singapore chilli sauce and tuna tataki...

With a view overlooking high above the water, the location of this restaurant is hard to beat! The heaters in the outdoor section of the restaurant were very toasty and we were comfortable despite it being a cool and windy day. Food was good quality and well prepared, though probably a tad overpriced for the portion sizes. The scallops were a standout, as were the soft shell crab sliders. You can tell they care about the quality of the seafood here.
Moody Foodie
This place is busy, but super organised. Staff were friendly and efficient. Food was king! Amazing good size portions excellent excellent quality food. I'm inspired to come back again for a weekend.

In my opinion, The Rocks is easily the best location for a restaurant in Mornington however the food tends to be a little hit and miss unfortunately, a friend and I ordered a Seafood platter and we were quite disappointed in the quality as well as quantity for the price - I am definitely not one to complain or have unreasonably high expectations - nor am I one who is tight with their money - however it was pretty average overall When we notified the staff, the Chef arranged for some extra fish which was nice of them. The decor is nice and the layout is open and airy.

Visited for a 5-course beer degustation & was universally impressed with every course. Each was very tasty & cleverly matched with an appropriate local beer.

The only downside was the share-table seating and VERY noisy environment (my ears were ringing when we left!). Still, food was top-notch.
The_man_from_me
For a morning brekkie this is a great location, and more importantly has good coffee and food. The biggest disappointment since my last visit was the severly restricted brekkie menu (out of season). So if you want a big brekkie or something cooked and customisable then head up the road to Gem Cottage or elsewhere. That said the Fried eggs and bacon on toast was nice for something light.
Yumeilia Ying
The service was excellent, view was great. but if you after the quality of the food. I wouldn't really recommend. The price is quite expensive and the food was just standard.

It was a special occasion for my sisters 40th. We had heard great reports as locals and wanted to showcase the Mornington Peninsula to Interstate guests. What an absolute embarrassment it was!We opted for the 'chef's 6 course' selection.Summary: Course 1: One re cooked dry prawnCourse 2: two oysters each. The coffin bay one on its way out. 3 of the 7 guests had tummy upsetCourse 3: A chicken salad, enough for 2 or so mouthfuls each, I didn't get any chicken in my serve, just a bit of salad.Course 4: A terrible stew of over cooked mussels. So overdone and re cooked. Just terrible, like eating bulletsCourse 5 and 6: (arriving together, because naturally they are best eaten at same time?!)Deliciously cooked slow lamb, enough however for a few mouthfuls. 1 bowl for a party of 7Very small amount of salmon, not enough for a full piece each accompanied with 2 bowls of lettuce with an average mayo dressing. Dare I ask who the chef is putting his name to this?? We purchased desserts on top of the 6 course option and have to say they were all wonderful. Hear leads me to believe it was reflective of us ordering from a la carte for these? We were so sorry we chose The rocks as our venue for the celebration. Our bill came to $800, we enjoyed some over priced drinks and appreciate that is expected nowadays, however the food is really something you should be ashamed of serving.

It was a wonderful birthday lunch!
Kirstine was brilliant in the coordination of it all - it ran so smoothly!

We all had a wonderful time and the food was scrumptious.

I really must commend the efforts of Alicia as well - our staff support for the day – she was welcoming, accommodating, BRILLIANT in coping with all our requests.

And they were lovely in coordinating the plaque for the cake and the lovely menus
We will certainly be returning – and so will many of our guests!
Penelope
Love this place. Service was attentive and food was great. Came here TWICE within two weeks and we live 2 hours away. My husband ordered a plate of sashimi and ordered another straight after. Fish was fresh and you could tell they have prepared the dish with respect. Be careful with the wasabi, they're more firey than they look!
Ashanie Mekhala Perera
The first thing I will say about this place is: the location is beautiful! The views are gorgeous and the fresh sea breeze that blows through the restaurant really adds to the waterfront dining experience. The service was friendly enough but a bit hit-and-miss in some instances. The dining hall is vibrant, open and full of light which is great (especially for taking pictures!).

The food was definitely fresh and…okay. I was not blown away; I was not disgusted. It was all..you know…’okay’ – it was like the service, in that there were some hits and some misses. The cocktail I had was very nice though!
Mrs Lavender
Had really nice lunch here at the rock . Nice view, friendly staffs, wagu burger & calamari. What makes a better Saturday lunch ?:p all the sweets looks so yum ! Should try next time .

I had the most delicious dinner last night! I would definitely come back to try more delights from The Rocks.

I highly recommend the crispy soft shell crab in lettuce cup. It's an entrĂŠe dish (@$15) and is packed full of flavour and textures. It comes with a whole soft shell crab (so if you're squeamish stay away). I wrapped the lettuce leaf up around the whole thing and are it in my hands as though it was a rice paper roll. It's gotta be the best way to eat it... Although the creamy Mayo-like sauce dripped out the bottom (there was way too much). But wow!

My boyfriend had the beef dumplings. I thought they were amazing too. They had more of a real minced beef texture inside... Unlike many dumpling houses where they must basically purĂŠe the meat and roll it into a ball. He wasn't so keen on it because he frequents dumpling houses (so not what he was expecting from a beef dumpling). Some of the best dumplings I've had in a while... Thinner skin too!

I had fish and chips for main. I surprised myself by picking a classic over something fancier, but I just seemed to really feel like it. And yay! Another great meal. The fish was still quite moist inside the crunchy light batter. The tartare sauce was the die for! I have no idea what's in it... but I want more!! I wonder if they sell it? The chips were... chips. I kinda wish they had tried something a little different with them. And the side was odd... It was a cos lettuce hearts with creamy sauce and cheese on top. It was a bit hard to cut up and eat, but it did compliment the meal. I would have preferred a crunchy slaw or alike... But it still gave me the freshness on the plate I wanted.

Two other people we were with had the seafood pasta dish. They seemed to enjoy it... But both said it was a little too salty. They'd both had it before and said last time it was fine. Perhaps just an off night with the seasoning?

We didn't have dessert, but I feel they would have been amazing!!

Even with my little quips... It still gets 5 stars. It was a lovely setting and atmosphere. And everyone else at the table raved about their food... Which is always a good sign. I hope I get the chance to come back soon to try something new... Although some dishes are definitely out of my price range so might be waiting a while.

Valentine's Day - you have to expect it to be pricey, but $215 EACH (apologies to my better half, if she reads this)! You gotta hope it's worth it.
The Rocks already scores well due its position overlooking the beautiful Mornington Harbour, the restaurant itself is lovely and the staff mostly friendly.
The sharing platter arrived - what a platter! Fresh seafood (inc a Bug each), tasty, well presented, and loads of it. The main course was a sharesy whole baked Snapper W veggies - very nice. The desserts were just sublime and followed by the perfect coffee.
Very full, very happy.
I guess they would have scored higher had the price been lower, quite a bit lower.

I was quite mixed about the rocks; the pros were that the food really was delicious, and I loved the setting and the decorations and atmosphere inside. The negative, heavily overpriced. I had the St Germain spritz to drink, nothing special, $16, $33 for fish and chips. I mean it was good food and good quality but not really worth that much in my opinion. We also got there and had a booking but they didn't have our booking, I even showed them the text confirmation they had sent me, it happens. But an apology would have been nice. We just awkwardly stood by the bar until a table freed up. I'd come back for the view! Oh and very difficult to find parking

Great view. Great food. Rachel!!
We were granted the opportunity to head down to a restaurant on the Mornington peninsula, previously recommended by others where we indulged in a sublime seafood meal. Captivated by the amazing views and fantastic food, I can most surely say that it was one of the best dining experiences of my life. Although, what made this meal what it was, our waitress Rachel was kind, brilliant, knowledgable, relatable, easy going, pretty and basically all you could ever ask for in a waitress and person!!! I would definitely recommend this restaurant for the food, the views, and especially the service! If you are lucky enough to get Rachel serving you, you are in for an absolute treat!!!!!!"
Amanda
The view is priceless and the food as just as amazing. I had the spaghetti... wow. Best marinara and everyone on the table agreed. It will defeinatly be hard to beat!! Everyone else was super happy with their meals, especially my mum with the lamb shoulder. Our server was super friendly. Highly recommend and can't wait to come back!

Pros: Food, Setting

Cons: Service, Banquet pricing

Called ahead to book and to inform that we’re planning on ordering the banquet which will need some minor modifications, as 1 member of the party is pregnant, and that 1 is allergic to nuts.

Told “No problem.”

Arrive and sat. Told waitress that we want to order the banquet but make some changes to avoid foods that can’t be eaten due to pregnancy/nut allergy.

Told “No, we don’t do that.”

Point to menu where it clearly states ‘Changes can be made to banquet with advance notice’ and explain that we’d called ahead and given advance notice.

“No. We can’t change the banquet.”

You can’t change the salad that has nuts sprinkled over it at the very end and just, you know, NOT sprinkle the nuts over it at the end?

“No.”

So it got off to a rough start with an abrupt/rude shutdown of our plans, which we had run past the restaurant when we booked.

Meanwhile 1 member of our party does some mathematics and realises that the banquet is criminal price-gouging… and that for the same price of $70 per head we can order the same exact menu items (while being allowed to substitute or adapt to accommodate our pregnancy/allergy requirements) AND drinks AND some desserts.

So we do.

The food is awesome. Everyone ate their fill and then some. Had some drinks. Great views. Spent just over $70 per head and got drinks/desserts as well as almost exactly the same meal as the banquet which costs $70 per head with no drinks or desserts included.

So The Rocks’ Back-of-House staff salvaged what could have been an unpleasant evening with their great food, drinks, and desserts which cost us less than if we’d ordered the banquet.

Our waitress was either rude or was secretly and subtly pushing us to realise that the banquet is insanely overpriced and that we should order the items separately. I’m guessing the former and hoping the latter.

Advice for The Rocks is to train your wait staff to be a little more accommodating of food requirements. We weren’t being unreasonable and we gave advance notice and we were brusquely told it could not happen. It was not an ideal start to what was (eventually) a great evening, thanks to stellar food.

Christmas lunch at The Rocks. The menus was fixed. Plenty of thought went into the menu. Sea food made up the entree's followed by turkey and roast vegetables for mains. Traditional pudding for desert.
Pricing was fixed per head. Drinks were not included. Plenty of helpful staff on hand to attend to your needs. Never an empty plate or glass. A credit to The Rocks as to have a full house plus some and ensure the day went off without a hitch is a credit to them.
Every time I've been here it's great. Starters and mains well presented and delicious. Service top notch. Keep up the good work. .............

Great location, nice decor with well spaced out tables and professional, helpful staff. Problem is the food is pub quality at best but at fine dining prices. To start we chose 2 entrees. Scallops and the beef dumplings which were served 15 min apart. Scallops were expensive, extremely over done and chewy. Flavours were nice though. Waited another 15 min for the dumplings which again had great flavours but the filling was odd. Kind of like over cooked hamburger meat in texture. For main we chose the seafood paella and slow cooked lamb shoulder. Paella was oily and baked onto the bottom of the pan it was served in. Again seafood was over cooked and overall the dish was quite bland. Lamb shoulder was great. Good quality and cooked well. Nice and soft and a large cut. Sides of potatoes and mushrooms with asparagus were good.
Desert we shared the profiteroles which were filled with ice cream and were not bad at all. My wife's favourite part of the whole experience actually. This place has a lot of potential but falls very short. Majority of the food may have been more tolerable at pub prices. But I doubt it.

Booked table online, no problems, seated promptly. Staff friendly. Shared entree unusual & tasty, wished we had ordered 1 each. Main of Snapper well cooked, beautifully presented. Would happily recommend this restaurant.
Went to The Rocks for dinner on Saturday night at 9pm. We had a booking but it took at least 5 minutes for staff to greet us and another 10 minutes to be seated at our table. It was very busy and quite noisy. Once seated we received excellent service with water being regularly topped up. The food was delicious, which included the seafood paella and slow cooked lamb shoulder.

Booked for four on Monday 2/11/15. Waitress did not allow time to settle in. Ordered 3 Fish and Chips and 1 Mussel dinner. Mussels were OK but the F & C's(Red Gurnard) were terrible, tasted like cardboard. Was looking forward to a great meal and turned out a disaster. I live in Mornington and have dined at most restaurants in town, The Rocks is overpriced and I would say the meals are very low grade compared to others. Second time we have been to The Rocks, disappointed a couple of years ago and again this time. WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN. I think we were given a $20 discount on the overall bill.
I have never written about a restaurant before, so to go to this extent will hopefully give you some idea of my disgust at the meal served to us.
My advice - just don't go there!!!

Called in here for lunch as it smelt good while walking past. We were seated promptly and drink order taken quickly. Jug of water provided but the glasses must have come straight out of the dish washer as they were quite warm...not ideal for cold water.
The food order was taken as soon as we had decided what to eat but unfortunately the guy who took it failed to pass it on to anyone... after 20+ minutes (and after watching the table next to us get their food and nearly finish it) I asked how our order was going, only to be told it wasn't entered. I offered to pay for our drinks and told them we would be on our way. They instantly refused to take money for the drinks (milkshake & lemonade) which was nice of them.
They might be worth more than a 2 but I can't give more to a restaurant that forgets to place an order.

Nice location, nice decor and outdoor area. The food is ok, I say ok, it's better than ok but not as good as the prices might suggest. All too often it seems if a restaurant has a view they charge more for the privilege but the food ends up lacking a bit. Have been here a few times but it's never my choice.

Excellent view of the water. My food (pictured) was $33; opted for grilled not fried for fish of the day. Service is good and prompt. The little f&c shop next door had a 40min wait - just for chips!
We likes this restaurant and will be back.

Tried for ages of booking local places and seems to be the norm in this area for places not to take bookings, rather have you just rock up and try your luck in getting at table...
The Rocks were the only ones that could take a reservation of 4 ✔️
Walk in and got taken to our table. The restaurant is quite nice and inviting. Clean, neat and presentable✔️
Menu is a bit overwhelming but we chose prawns and salt and pepper calamari for entrée ✔️✔️ they were absolutely delish!!
Mains we got the wagu beef burger✔️spaghetti marinara✔️ muscles in tomato sauce ✔️ and the bbq salmon✔️
All meals were yummy and everyone enjoyed them. We did order the chat potatoes but they were forgotten - but we were quite full so not a big issue.
Service was great, had a super vibrant friendly guy look after us.
One thing, I wish he had of written our orders down instead of trying to remember as he had to come back to re-confirm, but also he forgot to put forward our chat potatoes. But as mentioned, they weren't missed as we were full from our yummy meals!
Would come back here for lunch next time as the view would be amazing!!

Had some fresh oysters when we were there, a lamb pizza, fish and chips. The fish and chips was okay, nothing to complain about but there isn't any wow factor as well. I wouldn't say I like the lamb pizza either.

Ended up here after taking a random drive to Mornington. Fish and chips were ok. Can't say anything bad about it, but can't really say anything good about it either. My wife's mussels were very good though. The creamy sauce in which they were served was delicious.

Went to the rocks with some friends for Sunday lunch & was really looking forward to it because i love good seafood!! i order a dozen oysters natural & the paella, have to say besides being some of the dearest oysters ( over $40 ) they were the most tasteless i've ever had! i think they must have cleaned them in fresh water?
The paella was pretty good even though a bit smaller serve than i expected! so all up i had oysters, paella, 2 ciders & 2 latte's cost $118 which i think is a bit rich! i definitely will not be going back there & would advise people to NOT have the oysters!!
I was a bit disappointed with there seafood menu! i'm going to try the seafood @ Wings & Fins in Tooradin next & after reading the review i should be happier there? i will report on them hopefully in the positive?

Booked in on a Saturday night for a large table of 15, to celebrate our sons birthday. Lovely positioning on the peninsula, great venue - very spacious. Quality of the food and service was good and our table was well looked after. The highlight for me was the King fish dish

Great position with amazing views, yet very very slow service, and below the average food. It looks a bit run down and neglected. For some odd reason it was busy, I guess the views are more important for some...

A really nice view on a summer night! The seafood was just so fresh and very well cooked! My favourite part was the sashimi as there was different types and the cut was perfection! Only disappointing thing was that the service was on the slack side.

love the rocks, never had a bad meal and service is always high. The restaurant is in a beautiful location right on the water in Mornington. Cant wait to return and try even more of the menu, the moules marinieres was beautiful last time we ate there

The Rock sits right beside the sea. It felt so good just sitting at the deck area and enjoying the sunshine. We ordered the kings Simon sashimi with mayo and chilli sauce. The fish was slightly torched so it had the special grilled flavor. However, the fish was fresh but lack of flavor, tasted quite plain. For the mains, we had seafood spaghetti, fish and chips, paella and mussels with tomato and sausage. The mussel sauce was quite tasty and mussel meat was tender. The battered fish fillet was very crunchy but may need more salty flavor. The paella and spaghetti was average as well. Good location but average food.

Great food! Went there for my anniversary. Staff were very attentive....service was excellent.....Loved the ghost chillie with squid...king mushroom with gnocchi was to die for.....

Busy vibrant modern well appointed restaurant . The menu was extremely comprehensive and actually made it quite difficult to choose, I also felt it was a little confusing with some drinks on the menu and the rest on a separate drinks menu. The food was amazing fresh and straight from the sea. They happily let us share a dessert that was not only beautifully presented but tasted incredible. Highly recommend this well presented and friendly restaurant. We will be back!

In Heaven.... Went today wi.... In Heaven....
Went today with a girlfriend and it was absolutely beautiful, food, service and not to mention the view. To start we had the blue swimmer crab tostadas..yum and to follow the BBQ calamari which was so tender and full of flavour. Amazing! To top it off we shared the meringue which was crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. Like I said heaven. The staff were very friendly and prompt. Will definitely be returning :))

FANTASTIC !!!!!!!. Went to The Rocks for lunch yesterday and definitely will be back. We were greeted at the door by a friendly waiter who showed us to our table and seated us. The service was fantastic and the food was to die for. We left there feeling full and happy with the quality of our lunch and service provided. Will make eating here a regular occurrence

Disgusting Service - don't bother!! Go elsewhere. The customer service here is Appalling. My mother told me it was bad, but I thought never mind everyone has an off day. Should've read the reviews. They don't seat you, when you finally do get seated it's almost an inconvience and no one comes for 15mins, and to get more menus you get eyes rolled. Food was so mediocre and tasteless. So forget it. It's a shame because location wasn't bad. Wont be going there again - I'd rather have good food and be in a place where the service is great! Far far away from here.

Terrible customer service. Very disappointed with the customer service. No one came over to take our order so we had to go up to the counter and request for someone to come over. The waitress who eventually came over was rude and abrupt, it was as if it was a huge inconvenience for her that we wanted to order something. Taking an order? In a restaurant? Shocking! The only smile we got was from a young staff member who delivered our coffees. Please train your staff, customer service goes a long way.

Take away the view and what are you left with? A pretty poor faux restaurant. After 35 minutes we managed to get the attention of a waiter, who was so distracted, that I felt compelled to say we had been waiting an awfully long time. He responded with a Gaelic open handed shrug to signify he could care less, so what! And walked away!!!

The BBQ Bugs (at $42) were awful. We could not eat them. Even after scraping off some horrible Asian sauce.
That's when we cracked it and called for the bill to leave. On telling the manager what we thought of the bugs she went to the kitchen to investigate. Much heated discussion out there. She came back and said she couldn't possibly charge us for the bugs. I figured this was pretty good of her (even though we had hardly eaten any) and was prepared to let it go. Till I was sick all of the next day, today.
Not feeling very forgiving right now, hence this review.
We saved the day by going up the road to B.O.C for a sweet Pizza and coffee. What a contrast, fantastic ambience, food, coffee and genuinely warm Italian hospitality.

I am done with this place. Like another reviewer I have continued to give it the benefit of doubt and been disappointed each time. This time I am angry (and sick).

Hit and miss. We ordered kataifi prawns, salmon sashimi, soft shell crab sliders and for mains green curry, snapper, steak and pork belly. Bar the salmon sashimi and sliders, the rest of the food was poor value. They overcooked the prawns , snapper and the steak was chewy. The curry was bland. Great chocolate dessert.
They made up by giving us complimentary dumplings , but the overall experience left a bad taste in our mouth. So if you like randomness , you may want to try it. But for 4 of us, betting 300 dollars for a hit and miss was not worth it.

Great food great service. Recently visited the Rocks from the CBD for my husbands birthday. The view from the deck area is breathtaking. We had the katifi prawns, chilli squid and a few other small plates to share. They were all delicious and came out promptly. Our waitress was attentive and very helpful during the ordering process. The staff even sung happy birthday to my husband with a candle in a small cake! Will definitely be back. Thumbs up!

Bastille Day Meal -Thumbs Up - will be back. It was a cold wintry Monday evening, but the Rocks was full and was warm and inviting.
We had booked for the special set menu for Bastille, and was not disappointed.
Loved every mouthful, loved the moules et frittes, the cream sauce was divine, and the mayo with the fries - loved it, better than I have had in places in France - however what is it with Mt Martha mussels? - why are they soooooo small? the shells are huge but the meat inside is tiny in proportion, how come Portalington mussels are thrice the size???
Service was great, and it was lovely and cosy on a winters eve.
Just one thing tho, there was french music playing, very quietly in the background but they could have frenchied it up just a tad.

Great!. Went with a girlfriend recently and we had some share plates. The calamari was the best I have ever had. My husband and I love their fish and chips but it was fun to try some new things. Service was good and the location combined with the great food always brings us back.

Loved it, we'll be back definately. Read some of the comments but couldn't fault???? Loved the seafood selection.
Well priced I thought, large selection of small plates with an Asian influence.
We will be back.

Fantastic. I highly recommend The Rocks. Service is great, ambiance was unbelievable, especially if you're by the windows overlooking the pier. We had the ghost chilli salt & pepper squid and paella. Wonderful dining experience. Enjoy.

Over priced, unimaginative seafood with poor excuse for a salad.. 11th July my friend took me to lunch at the Rocks Mornington as part of a day of pampering. Due to the weather the Rocks was pleasantly roomy. We choose our table and ordered 2 x gin and tonics. We fancied fish and chips but the specials board caught our eye with a 'seafood grill for 2' at $88. We decided to spoil ourselves and so ordered it plus a side salad. When the bowl (not platter) arrived our chins dropped. The seafood was barely enough for one person, half a morten bay bug, not a full one, 4 king size prawns, a lot of mussels and an oyster each plus two small pieces of burramandi, that took a lot of forking over just to get some flesh off the bones. The salad consisted of half an iceburg lettuce cut in half (not shredded) with a drizzle of sour cream over the top. I complained about the iceburg and swapped it for chips. But even the chips oozed oil and grease as we hungrily bit into them. $110 we paid for one of the most disappointing and overpriced meals I have ever had the displeasure to eat. We chose to go to 'little gem' on Mornington main street for our coffee and desserts, always good food with reasonable prices. Should have gone there in the beginning. The view is good though perhaps best left for coffees and desserts.

Micro mussels. We have been to the Rocks three times but the last time I had paella and my wife had tomato and mussels. The last time I went I had paella and it was so large I could hardly finish it and it was beautiful but this time it was very small for the same price. I had four small mussels and two weren't even in the shell! For $37 it wasn't worth it Its just coloured rice with a few bits of fish and a couple of prawns. We are only on a very tight budget and come all the way from Belgrave just to eat there. My wife had the mussels which were very small almost as big as her finger nail and I could see from the look on her face that she wasn't impressed. The waiters were nice and filled our water glasses every couple of minutes. She didn't even get a side order of bread to fill her up. At least half of the mussels were empty and not to fee found in the sauce. $23 for a few shells and tomatoes! we can get one kilo of NEW ZEALAND mussels from Box hill for $5.00 and they are big. "The Rocks" mussels are too small and not cleaned properly. come on Rocks you can do better. We left and felt deflated because we love the Rocks and felt let down. I may give them one last chance.

Will never go back after rude service, left before ordering, very rude waiter
