Review Merchant Lane - Mornington

Great deals and all if you can overlook the terrible service from time to time. Today I experienced what it felt like to be asked as if I already ate the food and lied about not receiving the order. Not a proper apology nor compensation. Just pretend nothing happen and casually gave you the food. There's always a first and this is mine. Good luck

Don't bother! Waited half an hour in the queue, despite having pre purchased tickets to a performance which only lasted a few minutes. Tickets were supposed to include a drink card. This wasn't honoured!!! The supposed 'support act' was just the resident DJ, who played the first five hours of the evening, then just before the main act, for which I'd paid, started, I got a pass-out stamp, and was then told they don't do pass-outs. An establishment with such poor business ethics should not be permitted to keep running such a racket. It's outright chriminal!

To say I'm disgusted is an absolute understatement. My son had just flown in from Sydney on the eve of Monday 29/10/18 to take me for a meal to celebrate my 70th. As his trip was delayed & it was nearing 8.15 pm, we decided it would probably be wise, to dine locally. We checked the hrs on your shop window which said "6pm till Late" Whatever late meant? to me late would indicate anywhere from 11pm on, but it was not defined. Not until we had been forced to leave did we later notice on google that "LATE" is defined as 10pm. Upon entering the restraunt we were told that we didn't have long as closing time was aproaching, but there was plenty of time to have a meal. We were seated & a menu was brought after requesting one, but no cutlery etc. Whilst browsing the menu the waitress approached & told us we would have to hurry deciding, as the kitchen was closing in precisely 15min. Our meal was duly served, but still no cutlery or napkins. Again we had to request them. We had just commenced eating when the same waitress came to our table saying we would have to be rather quick as they were closing quite soon. We had not even got half way through our meal, when again the same waitress came & interupted us, this time to tell us we had only 1min left to finish up. My son & I still had half our meal on our plate & I still had almost a full glass of coke to finish. I tried rushing my meal, but this pesky waitress was back yet again, in exactly 1min. This time suggesting we take the remainder of our food home in a container, which she was willing to provide. I could not believe what i was hearing, but she was deadly serious, returning yet again, only moments later, with the container in her hand, she started clearing our food & plates from the table. I actually had to ask for 1 plate to be left as it still had my uneaten portion food on it. She then stood over the table like a watchdog, we embarrassingly tried scooping our food remains into the provided container, while she proceeded to tell us, how she would escort us to the door. I was desperately trying to scull my drink to finish it, whilst being ushered toward the door. The waitress offered to relieve me of my drink & tip it out, even though It was obvious I was still trying my best to finish it off. The time was 9.30pm & not what I would consider as late closing, according to the written times on the window. The restraunt next door was still brightly lit & in full swing, with many happy people still chatting & eating inside. We almost chose that place, over yours, to dine at, & now I jolly well wish we had. This is not the first unpleasant incident i have experienced at your restraunt. I am a local & a registered user. Only 2 weeks prior, upon asking for a fruit juice drink with my meal, I was told I could have one straight flavour, or mix two flavours tog. which I chose to do. Upon querying my order, as my side had not been served with my meal, I was told I had not ordered a side & the charge was for 2 drinks not 1, as mixing two juices together was special & classed as two seperate drinks, even though it came in one glass?? My second experience at your restraunt was equally as bad. My friend & I ordered 2 different meals, her meal was served & mine was not. By the time we got the waitress to understand, my friend had completely finished her meal & she was left sitting, while I was still waiting for mine to be served, then eaten. Your Chefs are very good cooks. But that's as far as it goes unfortunately. I am totally disgusted, this is definitely not the way to look after your customers, if you wish to keep them coming back. Especially your "LOCAL" patrons! I felt ashamed, that I had suggested to my son, that we eat at your restraunt. Next door is looking pretty good to me, the next time I'm feeling hungry. 😪

Went up to the bar to order my food and the lady who served me was extremely rude and unwelcoming, first time I’ve had bad service here but she didn’t seem to be very happy to be serving people.

Girl behind the bar was extremely rude and very unwelcoming. I felt as if I was inconveniencing her by being here. Not someone I would want representing my business.

Every time this joint runs a promotion, it is always badly executed! I boycotted this place for a good year due to a bad experience but decided to give them another go a few months back for their 2-4-1 souvers night and the service was much better and the food wasn’t too bad. I came last night because they were offering their VIPs a chance to sample their new Thursday night menu, Run Chicken Run” for free! I arrived at 7.10pm and my friends were already there and had a few of the wings and loaded fries that was brought to the table. They said the wait staff had popped it onto the table for them but once the dining area started to fill up, the wait staff barely made it into the room and the food was gone from their hands. It was atrociously ran and I didn’t end up eating any of the food as people were absolute vultures with the free food.
We decided to just pay for our food and the wait staff was lovely enough to drop some complimentary fried chicken off to our table on her way to the hungry “VIPs”.
The burger I had bought off the menu was nicely made and tasted very fresh and not too heavy.

An extremely relaxed atmosphere at Merchant Lane, dimmed lighting just to my liking! A fantastic selections of wines and extremely affordable food, (delicious too may I add) A great venue to meet up with friends for a few drinks! I absolutely LOVED the Bolognese Parma on Wednesdays too!
Can't rave on how awesome this hidden gem is, worth the visit!

This was the Merchant Lane $6.99 Friday Pizza Night! Can you believe they have pizzas priced this low?!?!

The highlights were definitely the mac and cheese bites, jalapeno poppers, chorizo pizza and their bacon aioli! Those were my favourites and they were done so well. The only minor issue would be how thin the pizza bases were, but then again you get what you pay for and they were still pretty delicious!

If you don't have anything to do just give them a go! It's great value!

What better way to kick off a long weekend than a trip down to Mornington for pizza?! I had the pleasure of attending Merchant Lane's Pizza Appreciation Night with $6.99 pizzas on offer but spoiler alert...they weren't the best bit!. Located right on Main Street, this spot doubles as a restaurant and a bar for the Mornington locals. It has a distinct garage grunge feel which suits the pizza and beer vibes. A bit loud and a bit rowdy but it's all about the atmosphere here and it works to its advantage. I did find an issue with some of the table being a bit too close for comfort though. Another issue was that the food took quite a while to get out to us considering it was overly busy.

Attended Parma Night yesterday. Great value for money, can’t believe how great the food was given the price. I was in with my children, and the waitress was so accommodating , moving us up the back towards the fire because we were cold. Big Thankyou to Em for that
Can’t wait to be back and try out the other marvellous nights she worded us up about
Ok to good food truck food, the burger very nice, the bao buns ok and the ribs good as well. My massive issue is the deal they have on, buy 3 main dishes with 3 adults and pay for one. A waiter the week before told us it was Friday and Saturday nights. He approached us just having a drink there and started raving about it clearly saying Saturday as well, even when I asked as I work Friday and only go out Saturday nights. Very poor to arrive and the deal is for Friday only. I did mention it without making a big deal about this and there were only sorrys all round. Very amateurish and wouldn't think it's all that hard to remember.

Whilst the service from the floor staff was spot on, music was blasting could barely hear conversation around the table. Massive delay between each person on the table getting meals. And the all you can eat ribs, was pretty spot on.

Visited last night for the 2nd time on Parma night, my husband ordered the parma with pulled pork $10.99 (which he enjoyed ) and I ordered the Eggplant Parma $4.90 with green salad $3.30 which was totally in-edible due to the fact that the eggplant wasn't cooked through. I couldn't even cut it with my knife.
When I brought it to the attention of the wait staff who was clearing the table, all he said was 'sorry about that'.
The other point was the cost of the bill with a pint of pale ale and a sml pot of apple cider on tap, the bill was $39.00- I did query it and she said the drinks were expensive. However I was too slow to ask for a receipt. My fault, but perhaps Merchant Lane can comment on the price of the drinks - does $20 for 2 drinks on tap sound correct? Don't think we will be back

Went for the all you can eat dumplings for $24.90 and it was yuck! All frozen dumplings just heated up in steam baskets. Waitresses just bringing around random food even if you've had prawn dumplings like nearly 3 times.
Didn't like it one bit and felt totally let down.
Stick to professional Asian homemade dumpling places if your up for a dumpling/yum cha fix. This was just gross and don't want to think about it anymore. 👎🏼 Enough to never go back.

Back in January I took my mum out for lunch at Merchant Lane. My mum was attracted to the place due to its apparent cheap prices. My mum had never had tapas before so she was going into this meal, blindly, not knowing what to expect.

I do agree with other reviewers, that the meals are excellent - it's a really smart menu BUT it could be improved on. The soft shell crab is delicious but you don't get enough soft crab for $13. It's really over priced for what you get - a few pieces of soft shell crab and the rest of the bowl is filled of lettuce. I must say that after my meal at the Merchant Lane I was so sick of lettuce ... It was in every dish except for the mussels.

My mum has never tried satay sauce before, and didn't know that satay meant a peanut dish. She doesn't normally try 'exotic' dishes so this was a brave choice for her. She was surprised with the amount of peanuts in her dish. It was too much for her and she was annoyed at the amount of lettuce she got. I think the satay chicken was a pretty good size compared to the soft shell crab but once again too much lettuce.

My favourite dish at the Merchant Lane were the mussels! That broth truly was something special and different.

I probably wouldn't go to the Merchant Lane again. I feel it's not well valued. It may appear cheap but after ordering a few dishes the price does go up quite fast - plus you are paying for mainly lettuce!

These are excellent dishes, excellent flavours but the servings of the lamb ribs and crab are very small for the price. $13 gets you two smallish pieces of soft shell crab; even more disappointing, $13 delivers just three tiny lamb ribs. If gelato had not been beckoning, more dishes would have been needed.

This is a great place with great food. It has only been open for a few months and has made an impressive effort to re-create the look and feel of Melbourne’s famous laneways, with separate serveries for hawker food truck, specialty beer bar, coffee and cake truck, and cocktail bar. We liked it but would have loved it if the servings had been more generous.
