Ambience : 4/5. Great location and ample parking space outside the restaurant. The place is cozy with simple decors which signifies a Malaysian restaurant.
Food : 3.5/5. Food is average and slightly pricey. Portion was generous. My favorite would be the curry puffs with delicious rich in flavor filling. The pastry was crispy and flaky.

The appearance of the venue doesn’t justify the quality of the meals this restaurant produces. Been here a few times now, with each time being pleasantly rewarded with the generous servings and authentic Malaysian flavours. A huge draw card is that they don’t use MSG. Will be back!
I really enjoyed the marmite chicken here which is something I don’t find on the menu often. It was savory and slightly caramalised and the marmite flavour was not too strong but pronounced enough. The buttered prawns were fragrant and buttery and not too oily. The sambal kangkong was crunchy and spicy. The only negative is that the food is more expensive than your average Malaysian restaurant.
My friend and I were grabbing lunch and we came across this Malaysian restaurant. They serve traditional Malaysian dishes at an affordable price and that were relatively authentic too.
I had the char kueh teow noodle dish, which was very oily and lacked in flavour. However, the dish had delicious elements to it. My friend had the beef nasi lemak which looked yum, and the beef curry was tasty too.
Had the beef redang today. The gravy is too watery, not as good as Laksa King in Newmarket. Had the kungpo chicken in fried yam, not as good as the one in Jade Kingdom. Decor of restaurant is good for social gathering. Otherwise the cuisine here caters towards the Westerner palate.
Good serving sizes, quick service and delicious food. Can't complain. Only thing stopping it from being a 5 is that it's not amazing. Stop trimming my responses, Zomato
We haven't been here in over a year, but when we walked through the door we were recognised. The service is so good and the food of high quality. My husband is vegetarian and gluten free. Apart from this a bit fussy too, but they had no problem creating a meal to suit him. Every time we have had a birthday celebration here without asking they gave us beautiful deserts with candles at no charge. I cannot fault this restaurant and highly recommend it to anyone looking for value, great food and fantastic service.

Good service and food. I highly recommend the Kung pow chicken with taro. Had Hokkien Mee, sweet sour pork, five spice eggplant, sambal prawns, beef rendang, roti with satay sauce, bok choy, and tofu and mushroom with broccolli. Too bad their coffee/tea machine was down, wanted to try their tea tarek, hope they fix it soon.
This was our 1st time here as we were invited for a birthday dinner. It's a lovely restaurant, very good service & staff friendly.
Entree we had the satay chicken which was tender & the satay sauce was nice.
Mains I had the beef rendang, so tender & delicious, the serve was huge!!
Also ordered was the red curry duck which was so tasty.
The meal prices are reasonable but drinks expensive!!

Yummy lunch and great service. We had salted egg yolk bean, marmite chicken (kids favourite), Singapore prawn (super delicious), Kai Lan with slice beef, nonya fish (one of my favourite) and Hokkien noodle.
I love the roti canai with rendang chicken. It taste delicious. Not forgetting the sambal fried rice that I ate on Sunday with my family. The service was awesome and lovely. The price are very reasonable.
Went here on a very quiet Wednesday night. Quite a nice and formal setting/ambience. Ordered the roti rolls which were DELICIOUS!! Also had the hokkien mee which lacked a bit of flavour but portions were generous and filling, as was my accompany's curry laksa dish!

We had a birthday lunch at Straits kitchen for a large number of us. We ordered from the a la carte menu for a change and the food tasted incredible and portions were very generous. The favourites were the Beef Rendang, Singapore Chilli Prawns, Marmite Pork and the Beans with Eggplant. Staff were friendly, very accommodating and patient with us when we took time to order. This place is such a great find! Recommend to all! Keep up the good work!
This is my favourite Malaysian style restaurant in the area. The food is always great (salt and pepper calamari is my favourite) and the servings plentiful. The staff are always helpful too and the decor quite modern.
One of the better Malaysian hawkers food I have had in Melbourne. The Nasi Lemak was great and the staff were really friendly. Would recommend for family with young kids.
God love this place. I always devour everything here because it's so damn good. Love the service and it's never overly busy. Nasi goreng is a standout and brilliant for the price. Everything in pinewood seems to be doing the right thing love coming here on my lunch break!

Straits Kitchen is a nice Malaysian restaurant which I enjoy visiting for lunch. The interior is extremely clean, anything from the plates, cutlery, table, carpet is immaculate. This is definitely not your rustic style Malaysian restaurant, it feels a bit more upper class. This is also reflected in the price as well, as all the dishes are about $2-$4 dollars more than the cheaper Malaysian restaurants. I would say this is justified though as the food is quite good, and it's a great place to take someone new for lunch as it doesn't look shabby at all.
We ordered the Nasi Lemak and Hainanese Chicken rice on this particular occasion. The rice was flavoured nicely with both dishes. Nasi Lemak had a coconut flavoured rice and the Hainanese was a chicken stock one. The chicken was really soft with the Hainanese chicken rice. It had a soy based flavouring which was light and went well with the chicken. The sauces that came with it also complimented the dish well. The Nasi Lemak was also as good as any other Malaysian restaurant. The curry chicken was cooked perfectly and the curry flavour penetrated through the meat.
Their were two waitresses serving us dressed in traditional Malaysian outfits. I have seen these two on numerous occasions and they really know the menu inside out. They are so good that they don't need to write down the order, and they haven't got anything wrong from what I have seen. Both very friendly and provided excellent customer service. It's always reassuring to know that they are capable and therefore you won't be frustrated with the service.
Parking can be a bit of a pain especially during the prime lunch hours but Straits Kitchen is a great place to eat, and you can generally get a seat without much fuss. Prices are a lil higher, you'd prob won't get much change from $20 for a lunch item and a drink, but it's well justified.
Excellent Singapore noodles and seafood Mee Goreng. Flavourful and fresh. Delicious, friendly, quick. Kids loved it. Good selection of wines, spirits, and beer. Will be back!
Delicious Malaysian food. Everything I have tried at Straits kitchen is delicious and the restaurant is a comfortable location to relax and enjoy some BYO wine with a great meal. I love to bring my parents here as it is a relaxed environment with high quality service from the waitresses.
Absolutely incredible. The food was so tasty and well marinated. Such friendly and quick service. Had the kung pao chicken and dad had honey black pepper beef and nasi goreng. The flavours were unbelievable. Everything was well balanced and the meat was so tender, soft and lean. Can't wait to go to this place again.
We've walked past this place a number of times and even dubbed it the 'expensive-looking Malaysian restaurant' but never actually went in till about a week ago. It was certainly more expensive compared to other Malaysian restaurants we normally visit, but it also had a clean and quiet setting which was a nice change. This was hubby's curry chicken nasi lemak and he really liked it. In his words, 'The rice was nice, the curry was nice, and the chicken was real chicken!' When asked to elaborate about what he meant by 'real chicken', he commented about another restaurant that only served 'all bones and no meat', apparently! I ordered the Hainanese chicken rice, and the flavours were clean and elegant, as was the presentation. Fantastic food from a very extensive menu. Visited for lunch with a group of girlfriends as we were told that there is a recent change in management and now comes with a more extensive menu incorporating famous dishes from Malaysia in addition to the already wide array of traditional local hawker fare that they serve. The current owner is also the head chef (he came out to meet us) was very friendly. The menu now includes many local Malaysian dishes that are not easily found around the popular Glen Waverley area.
The food we had was simply delicious and true to the authentic taste of local Malaysian dishes. The 'kam heong' pipis and the Plum and Chilli Sauce Steam Fish (Cheong Jing) was exactly how I remembered it tasted from when we were living in Malaysia - mouth watering and bursting with flavours! A must try would be the Golden Egg Yolk Green Bean - a dish that has gained many fans from our group of 8!
The restaurant also has a great atmosphere and one can easily be fooled into thinking that it is a very expensive restaurant. The price of the dishes are very reasonable considering the quality of the food served is fantastic and the ambience of the restaurant is one of the best that we've been to that serves great Malaysian food. We are so glad we took the opportunity to try out this place and to find such a gem is truly amazing! Looking forward to returning with families and friends more often for regular meals and celebration of events!!

Got to know management has changed hence went for a try. Excellent service with good food. Pretty decent menu to choose from. Portion was adequate, worth for every penny. Well cook Asian taste. A worth to try and will return again!

Lunch barely Ok but nice friendly service and we were not rushed out.. Had lunch at the Straits on Wednesday 10th September, 2014.
The front of the restaurant is bright and glasses of water were ready before we sat down. The service was friendly and efficient. There the positives largely end.
The menu seemed barely worthy of the 'nyonya' tag but had a reasonable range of Malaysian style listings. As 'Westerners' we were never offered chopsticks, but rather unmanageable spoon and fork. (OK I guess we could have asked).
Don't expect to get dishes like the photos on this page for lunch anyway! I wish I'd snapped our meal to compare - too late now. Did get Bigger portions of laksa and Char Koay Teow, but there it ends.
The Gyoza were pretty ordinary, and the dough a bit heavy and sticky, the stuffing hard and tough, the Peking duck entree seemed rather small and a bit dry, but was OK, The Laksa overly big but acceptably tasty but with overly large portions of tofu, and the Char Koay Teow large but rather 'gluey' and seemed as if might well have been 'rewarmed' - not as fresh and appetizing as I've had elsewhere and furthermore was quite cool on the outside by the time it reached me and warmer in the middle. It was also rather light on the 'protein' components, with 3 prawns, almost no sausage and the chicken had that 'reheated' flavour. Disappointed. Once the main meal was served we were effectively 'forgotten' and had to get up from the table to ask for coffee as even waving did not attract attention by the then quite busy waitpersons.
Given that I mentioned I'd be writing an Urban Spoon review this was even more surprising? I'm sorry, as the service was so friendly one doesn't like to be negative, but Melbourne deserves better, and better is available. I urge you to lift your game Straits Kitchen, as your girls are friendly and the setting is good too.
OK, and I was given a doggy bag for the remaining Char Koay Teow, but not sure that was recommended given the fact that it seemed to have been reheated at least once? (half a large bowl of Laksa was just wasted). But there are definitely much better options close by.
Pleasantly Surprised Dinner. Was informed that this restaurant had a change in management recently so we went to try out the place. I was pleasantly surprised as the food was good and the ambience perfect. We had the marmite chicken dish as well as the 5 spice pork chops/ribs. both meat dishes was cooked to perfection, soft, succulent and tasty. According to the head chef, (who took the time to see us at the table) he explained that although a change in management occurred, he has been making minimal changes to the dishes focussing only to enhance the flavours of the dishes. He is also open to suggestions and welcome feedback. We had a pleasant experience that night.
We also had some entrees and all tasted to our liking - roti roll, peking duck wraps and spring rolls.
We will definitely return.

Lovely night out. We visited for dinner on a Saturday night upon a friend's recommendation. We were advised to bring our own wine as the drinks were very expensive. We noticed that most of the surrounding tables had brought their own as well. The staff handled this very well and regularly kept our iced water topped up.
The service was excellent and we couldn't fault the food. It was slightly on the pricey side but we did feel we got value for money. There was one dish we couldn't finish and staff kindly offered to put it in a container for us to take home.
My only small complaint was that the menu was a little difficult to follow. There was one page of entrees, then some mains, then noodles & rice, then more entrees, more mains, sides & desserts. It would have been much easier if all of the entrees and mains had been listed together.
All in all we would definitely visit again. The food tasted great and was beautifully presented, the tables were spacious and the place had a nice ambience. Staff were lovely and a good night was had by all.

Nice surprise. Ended up here for lunch yesterday, purely by accident. This used to be a Thai restaurant. We went in anyway & ordered off the lunch menu. We had a rice dish with olives, chicken curry and Hainanese chicken. All were excellent, and superb value for money, at $12 each. The drinks were horribly overpriced ($12 for a glass of NZ Sauv Blanc), which spoiled the experience a little. Staff were pleasant & service efficient. We'll be back to try the dinner menu soon, but will take our own wine!

Great presentation. What I think is greatest is that everything is beautiful presented and the restaurant itself is professional, clean and not just a hole-in-the-wall kind of place. AND the food is great! Authentic flavours and dishes. The roti wrap with chicken was delicious and the roti was melt-in-your-mouth! The signature laksa with seafood came with a good range and amount of seafood and condiments. The smell and the flavour of the broth was fantastic. Only complaint was that the prawns didn't seem totally fresh and were a bit tough and the noodles were a bit too firm so were not that enjoyable. I'm sure the dinner menu will have just as top quality food.
Great local Malaysian. Went as group from work for lunch. Was not disappointted. Food was great and fresh. Had the Spicy Chicken Ribs rice, only comment was it could have been spicier, otherwise great. Group comment that their food was great too.
Will definitely be back.

Family went to Straits Kitchen to celebrate my wife's birthday. We lived in Singapore for 9 years and love Straits/Nonya food. SK did not disappoint us. We enjoyed Nonya fish, beef rendang, char kueh teow and sambal spinach. The less adventurous member of the family gave the Hainanese chicken the thumbs up. The adults had fun with the oyster shooters - not exactly authentic Straits cuisine! We took our own bottle of Tatiarra Cambrian Shiraz 2005 that went well with the spicy food (modestly spicy).

Not a bad local! Food although expensive in comparison to other well known haunts for Malaysian fair. The ambience is romantic and much better than the cheap eateries. Most importantly the food was good!! The wot tan hor had the 'wok' flavour. If u know what I mean. and the curry laksa was a bit too creamy for my personal liking but that's how the nonya style is so no complaints there. :) all in all a pretty gd experience and would definately return!
New favourite. Arrived Sunday for lunch - welcoming staff, space for pram. Quality of food was right up there with fine dining. Curry laksa was perfect, hor fun was just as good. Attentive staff, great atmosphere - will be our new malaysian dine out venue from now.

We've eaten here on numerous occasions and have not been disappointed once. The atmosphere and decor make the experience very enjoyable. Service from all the wait-staff was great with plenty of offers for more drinks and clearing the table. The beef rendang was as good as you'll get in any Malaysian restaurant. Perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a group booking. We will definitely be back.

The service is good and the food is *mostly* amazing.
The entrees are excellent. If you have a large group just ask for a mixed entree platter and they'll give you enough for everyone. Stand out is the calamari.
The mains are all very reasonably priced. Favourites are the beef rendang and the nyonya ayam curry.
Home away from home. Based on reviews from urbanspoon, I gave Straits Kitchen a try for the first time and have since been back for more. I'm Malaysian, born and raised, so I can attest to the authenticity and quality of the dishes I've sampled - Mee goreng, Nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, Singapore steamed duck, teh tarik, kuih dadar. The satay is the only disappointment, but not unexpected as noone can equal the smoky flavour of true Malaysian satay barbecued over hot coals. Satay sauce makes up for the lack.
The service is the right level of attentiveness and friendliness. The restaurant decor is new and therefore very clean, and ambiance is casual with soft mood lighting.
Lots of other items to try on the menu, my family and I will be frequent diners.
Great Malaysian food-minus the queues. Went there for lunch today with a biggish crowd. Many in our group ordered the char koay teow and the wah tan hor (rice noodles in egg sauce Cantonese style) and the others had the beef rendang and the mee goreng. Each of those dishes earned nods of approval. I had the sambal sotong (chillie squid) which was also very good. All of thiose dishes were priced at $12.80 each. The slight premium was worth paying for the space, decor and great service we had. Often comparable joints in places like Glen Waverley had the dining experience wrecked by bad service and overcrowding, not to mention fast deteriorating quality (if it hasn't plummeted already) and Straits Kitchen had very good food minus those pains. We all agreed (all 15 of us) agreed it is a place we'd return to no questions asked.
Delicious food, great atmosphere. Came here for dinner on a weeknight with 3 friends. Food was deadset delicious! We started off with entrees and shared Roti Wraps and Satay Chicken Skewers. The roti was perfectly flaky and skewers succulently juicy. My main which was the Straits Special Fried Rice had plenty of prawns and scallops which were bursting with flavour. Great feedback also from my friends who had the Nasi Lamak and the Roti Canai and we all agreed that the portion sizes were very generous. Loved the ambiance and the service of the staff, even the menu was beautifully set out. Very satisfied and my friends and I will definitely visit again!
Wonderful. I was recommended to visit this place from my friend, and it never disappointed us. I was recommended Malay Kung Pao, the taro basket was yummy. Udang Pedas is another one of my favorite, juicy and fresh.
Great food for a wonderful price. We had the sweet and sour pork, and the Singapore noodle. The first dish is very refreshing, while the second is slightly oily but super delicious. The service is really spot on also. :) Would definitely consider come back in the future.
Only leaving 4 stars because the food redeemed itself. The price is reasonable enough and the food quality is always quite good overall. However the hit is the lucky dip with customer service. Sometimes will be fine, and every now and again it’s just awful. I honestly think it’s a particular server, wouldn’t even make eye contact? Anyway. Still a solid Malaysian restaurant!
A warm and welcoming waiter who was very attentive. We ordered for entrees the satay skewers which were complimented by a side dish of sauce, the duck rolls which were full of quality ingredients and the five spice calamari which was tender and a delightful dish to eat.
Mains were noodles, rice, chicken and curry. All equally as flavoursome, the ambience was calm and restaurant inc toilet s were of a high standard.
It was family friendly as we had 3 kids with us and they were very accomodating especially to my dietary requirements of no onion or garlic in some dishes !
This was one of the best restaurants I have been to. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, they were mindful that we were dining with a small child, so ensured that our meal was brought to us in a timely manner, though they did not rush us at all. The food was excellent, and they offered to alter serving sizes to accommodate our needs. This was a great dining experience!
Food was excellent, had the grilled seafood platter for two, and it came out on this magnificently large plate, with enough seafood to last me for a long time, so a good value for money. Also had the natural oysters which were very fresh, will go back and try some of the other flavours they offer soon. Service was very satisfactory for a busy night, and the restaurant decor is just beautiful. Feels like I'm in someone's living room!
I saw some negative and some great reviews about this. I guess it depends on what you ordered, so I will be specific - the food I ordered ranged from outstanding to merely good. The Otong (calamari) 5 spice version was absolutely superb - perfectly cooked and flavour was "write home to mama in Melaka" about... The eggplant and beans with shrimp paste was equally excellent - how can so much flavour be jammed into two nondescript vegies?! The others were also good to excellent, but these two stood out.
