Tasty food, really fast service. The owners are really nice as well. First time coming here and sad to hear that they will be moving to camberwell, however I think this will be much better for their business as mount waverley is pretty quiet.

LIT!: we ordered the katsu curry and the gyudon. The food was delivered quite fast and the customer service was so friendly. On a cold night, they even provided a heater next to our table! Winner was the katsu curry.

NOT SO LIT: nothing surprising for the quality of food and serving size could have been slightly bigger. We were shy of feeling full.

Thanks for having us!

Despite a very curious name, Nuts Chan is a fairly nondescript Japanese restaurant ensconced in the Mt Waverley shopping village. A post-lunch Google search told me that Nuts-Chan is actually the name of the owner's name. The restaurant is modest and a bit run down but has a very homey feel to the place. My katsu don was simple but very tasty. The pork was deliciously marinated and tender; and I loved the sauce and how it mingled with the piping hot rice. The steamed egg on top gave the dish a lovely richness.

Good Suburban Japanese, can't complain about $1 for a pot of tea! Good agedashi tofu. I'll be back soon.

Nuts Chan is a cute little Japanese cafe located on the corner of Stephensons Road and The Hwy in Mount Waverley. We dropped in quite late today (about 30 minutes before closing time), but they were more than happy to accommodate us.

They are primarily a takeaway cafe, with a single table visible at the window, but also have a few tables available hidden at the back if you wish to dine in.

The staff were very friendly and the service was quick. The dishes were a bit of a hit and miss, but it could have been because we arrived quite late in the evening and they had already started packing away the ingredients. I’ll definitely be back again in the near future to try some of their other dishes (at a more reasonable time so they aren’t rushed!)

Check out the review of Nuts Chan in the blog post below.

Our favorite local restaurant. Warm and friendly service and consistently good food. They recently have a great $1 side menu where you can get 2 gyoza, a scoop of green tea ice cream or other sides (limit one per person). Despite us soon to be moving out of the Mt Waverley area, we will still make the effort to come back and support this little local restaurant.

Food is pretty average but decent, and portion size is good. Atmosphere is very homey. So it's a pretty good choice for a quiet lunch with colleague on a workday when craving for some homey comfort food.

Low key dinner in a very laid back setting. Cheap Katsu at fourteen bucks which was exceptional value as it included a fair amount of chicken. Next time I'm keen to try a bento box.

A cozy and authentic japanese restaurant. Had katsu-donburi and it was delicious.  Presentation wise could be better. The price is reasonable. The owners are not japanese, probably korean. I came on a hot day, and was offered me a bottle of cold water from the fridge. Will come back to try others.

I had the chirashi for lunch and really enjoyed it. There was a decent portion of fish and it tasted quite fresh. Service is attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy; it feels like you're eating at a friend's house. Would come here again.

Came here the for the first time. Really thought my Yasai Koroke (spelling?) was magnificent. SHame the shop front doesn't give it justice as its worth a go.

I've been here multiple times, and the food and service is consistently great!
The donburi are tasty and filling, while the ramen and udon soups are light and refreshing. The croquettes are also fantastic: golden and crispy!
Portion sizes and prices are quite reasonable and their menu features many popular Japanese dishes.
Meals here are always pleasant and satisfying!
I really recommend this underrated Japanese joint for anyone who lives both near and afar!

If you're looking for cheap Japanese eats, this 'best kept secret' would be it. It's good, fresh, quick and no frills.

If you come here with a big group, best to reserve and take the entire room!

First of all, Nuts-chan is the chef's daughter's nick name (short for Natsuko-chan). I write this because, due to the name, it took me a year to walk through the front door. And since I did, I'm a regular. This is authentic Japanese and Korean food in an unpretentious setting. Try the nabiyaki udon on a cold day and tell me it's not heavenly. The sushi and sashimi is also of extremely high quality.

Kim really likes this Japanese place. We have been going here for nearly 10 years. Its a small family owned restaurant. It hasn't been updated in a long time. The family is nice and friendly. The food is fresh and tasty. For Entree's we had Takoyaki. Takoyaki is a wheat batter with octopus in it. Its sweet and kind of juicy We get this or Nasu Denggaku and that is deep fried eggplant with miso paste. Which we always enjoy. For our mains I had the Niku-udon and its beef with udon noodles. Normally i get the Bento box which is really great but i thought i would try something different. It was alright. It was a big serving of soup and noodles. The noodles are always cooked perfectly, they never disintegrate and that's always a good thing.  Kim had the Tempura- Udon, it is Noodle soup with vegetable tempura. She seemed to enjoy it a lot. Normally she gets the Nabeyaki-udon, but she was not that hungry. We always like supporting the local small businesses. So we will always be b

A while ago, my brother and I went for a quick weeknight dinner at Nuts Chan, Mount Waverley. When I first saw it on Urbanspoon, I giggled to myself (doesn't the name sound a little strange?) but then decided to give it a try after reading all the good reviews. We wanted to share a few dishes instead of having a main each, so first we ordered some sashimi. We were served a lovely variety of fresh fish for a very reasonable price. My brother and I are sashimi junkies so needless to say, we enjoyed this dish very much! Next up we had some agedashi tofu. For me, agedashi tofu is one of those dishes that don't really stand out, but is always comforting to have. It definitely warmed up our tummies! I introduced my brother to korokke (croquette) that night! We ordered the yasai korokke (vegetable croquette), which was crispy on the outside and filled with mushy potato and vegetable goodness inside. Finally, we ordered okonomiyaki (savoury pancake). I'm not a big fan of okonomiyaki as I alwa

Nuts Chan, even though it has a bit of a funny sounding name, is a great little local japanese restaurant. I have frequented the Mount Waverley area for many year, and have never even noticed it hiding out in it's little corner shop location. We went there for a quiet weeknight dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the freshness and homely-ness of the food they served. To start we ordered a mixed sashimi plate, and for mains, I chose the Bibimbap with Beef, and E decided on the Tonkatsu (pork) on steamed rice. All of the dishes were served very quickly, and with very polite service. The sashimi was all very fresh and tasty. I think we got the larger size. Mixed Sashimi For mains, E gobbled up his Tonkatsu dish pretty quickly - it must have been really good! I had a little taste of one of the pork pieces, and it was really good - their had been an egg placed on top of the dish, and it had soaked through all of the pork and rice - mmmm! Tonkatsu with Rice My dish, was incredibly fresh, and just

Pleasant. After reading reviews, I wanted to try this place for myself. It was a little troublesome trying to find the restaurant at first. The front of the store was a typical little restaurant. The front of the store doesn't give you an idea whether it is a sit in restaurant as the front counter has a sushi roll display. My friends were asking me where they sit but we hadn't even stepped in yet. Past the front counter was a tiny little room that would've been 3m x 5m small. It could only cater for 16 people! Walls are plain and it looks like someone has made their home into a restaurant. It was obvious this place needed an upgrade. They also had a tiny little heater in the corner. The ones that you'd find at Kmart for your bedroom.
The food was good. The cream korokke was true to its name. Very soft and creamy with a crispy outer texture. The tartare sauce helped it come along too. The Teriyaki Chicken Don was a bit bigger compared to my other friend's rice dishes. It smelled delicious once it was placed under my nose. It tasted delicious too! The portion size seemed bigger than my friend's dishes... or maybe that was just the size of the bowl? My meal cost $16 all up.
(My friends had the potato salad. It's quite funny because it's potato mash with coleslaw through it.)

My partner is from overseas and refused to try sushi. After nagging him to try it out (as all women do) he has fallen in love with nuts chan and goes at every opportunity available. I've been coming here for years and you've gained another fan my "non-sushi eating" partner! Well done!

My favourite restaurant. Dined here last night. My girlfriend and I had this place recommended to us by the Japanese teacher at the local primary school. Years on, it is still our favourite restaurant.

I noticed that they have now placed a heater in the middle of the room (possibly in response to a previous review on here?). Anyway, it certainly wasn't cold.

My favourite dishes at Nuts Chan are: Cream Korokke, Sukiyaki, Katsu-don, eggplant with miso paste, Nabeyaki udon. The sushi is also excellent. I feel the sashimi is an area of relative weakness. It's certainly decent, but everything else seems even better!

Although I really like their decor it may be more homely than would be desirable for a first date or anything very formal. This is more of a casual dining establishment.

I only have one major complaint - they do not offer any home delivery service!

Best value and DELICIOUS Jap in the Eastern Suburbs. Nuts Chan is downright my favourite Japanese restaurant of its caliber in the Eastern burbs. It's extremely well priced and the food is so tasty, and very Japanese. My favourite would be the cream crab korokke, followed by the eggplant with miso paste, and the Japanese curry. Even the basics, like the sobas and katsu-don are delish. It makes me wish I lived in Mt Waverley.

I would definitely recommend this if you're hungry for some Japanese and want a low-key lunch or dinner (they don't do alcohol). I could eat here everyday! (and it wouldn't break the bank).

Cheap and Delicious. This place is a local shop so a friend and I decided to try it out. So glad we found this gem! I really like japanese cuisine, and this place easily beats other places you would pay a lot more for. I loved the cream korroke and katsu curry I ordered, and my friend enjoyed her teriyaki chicken. The owners are Japanese as well so it's authentic! Definitely returning to this place

One of the nicest Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. Quiet and extremely friendly. Sushi chef on hand full time. Great selection of hot foods and very fresh sushi made to order. Personally recommend the beef donburi. Basic dessert is 3 types of very nice Japanese I've cream - red bean, black sesame or green tea. Very welcoming to children, also great place for a night out as a couple.

Our favourite Japanese with friendly service and consistently great food. It's a small, cozy and unassuming restaurant with great quality sushi and sashimi. I recommend the double sashimi chirashi, NutsChan roll, cream korroke, eggplant and karrage chicken. Even though we have moved out of the Mt Waverley area, we still make an effort to come back to this great little local.
