Review Nuts Chan - Mount Waverley

Aaron King
One of the nicest Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. Quiet and extremely friendly. Sushi chef on hand full time. Great selection of hot foods and very fresh sushi made to order. Personally recommend the beef donburi. Basic dessert is 3 types of very nice Japanese I've cream - red bean, black sesame or green tea. Very welcoming to children, also great place for a night out as a couple.

Best Japanese I've had, also plenty of options for my vegan girlfriend. The eggplant dish is so incredibly amazing! Great for a sweet tooth! Cute homely decor! A very welcoming and happy restaurant! So happy we found this little gem! We live within walking distance so we'll be back! Thank you for a lovely evening!!!!

Our favourite Japanese with friendly service and consistently great food. It's a small, cozy and unassuming restaurant with great quality sushi and sashimi. I recommend the double sashimi chirashi, NutsChan roll, cream korroke, eggplant and karrage chicken. Even though we have moved out of the Mt Waverley area, we still make an effort to come back to this great little local.

such authentic japanese food! the owners and all workers are so friendly, and the food is fresh and delicious. i recommend the double chirashi bowl, which is full of fresh sashimi and vegetables with sushi rice!

Best Japanese in the area. Family run. Fish super fresh. Friendly staff. Don't let the decor fool you, we know Japanese food.

Tasty food, really fast service. The owners are really nice as well. First time coming here and sad to hear that they will be moving to camberwell, however I think this will be much better for their business as mount waverley is pretty quiet.

LIT!: we ordered the katsu curry and the gyudon. The food was delivered quite fast and the customer service was so friendly. On a cold night, they even provided a heater next to our table! Winner was the katsu curry.

NOT SO LIT: nothing surprising for the quality of food and serving size could have been slightly bigger. We were shy of feeling full.

Thanks for having us!
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Despite a very curious name, Nuts Chan is a fairly nondescript Japanese restaurant ensconced in the Mt Waverley shopping village. A post-lunch Google search told me that Nuts-Chan is actually the name of the owner's name. The restaurant is modest and a bit run down but has a very homey feel to the place. My katsu don was simple but very tasty. The pork was deliciously marinated and tender; and I loved the sauce and how it mingled with the piping hot rice. The steamed egg on top gave the dish a lovely richness.

Came on a Thursday around 7.30pm, place was fairly quiet. Edamame not listed on menu, asked if they had them and they did. Was then served partly frozen edamame! Complained and was offered seaweed salad instead as it is the same price (no offer of a refund). Miso soup had a strange, cardboardy taste. Teriyaki chicken was tasty except for all the fatty skin left on which was gross. Will not go back

Good Suburban Japanese, can't complain about $1 for a pot of tea! Good agedashi tofu. I'll be back soon.

Nuts Chan is a cute little Japanese cafe located on the corner of Stephensons Road and The Hwy in Mount Waverley. We dropped in quite late today (about 30 minutes before closing time), but they were more than happy to accommodate us.

They are primarily a takeaway cafe, with a single table visible at the window, but also have a few tables available hidden at the back if you wish to dine in.

The staff were very friendly and the service was quick. The dishes were a bit of a hit and miss, but it could have been because we arrived quite late in the evening and they had already started packing away the ingredients. I’ll definitely be back again in the near future to try some of their other dishes (at a more reasonable time so they aren’t rushed!)

Check out the review of Nuts Chan in the blog post below.

Our favorite local restaurant. Warm and friendly service and consistently good food. They recently have a great $1 side menu where you can get 2 gyoza, a scoop of green tea ice cream or other sides (limit one per person). Despite us soon to be moving out of the Mt Waverley area, we will still make the effort to come back and support this little local restaurant.

Food is pretty average but decent, and portion size is good. Atmosphere is very homey. So it's a pretty good choice for a quiet lunch with colleague on a workday when craving for some homey comfort food.
The Don
Low key dinner in a very laid back setting. Cheap Katsu at fourteen bucks which was exceptional value as it included a fair amount of chicken. Next time I'm keen to try a bento box.
The Whippeteers
Tucked away around a corner, off a service road, on the sleepy side of Mount Waverley, you'll find this tiny Japanese eatery.

It's been here forever. Why? Last night 2x Whippeteers went down to find out!

Of course, this Whip recognised the Sushi/Sashimi chef. We have known each other's faces for years (from the local swimming pool).

This place is homey, not flash. It seats about 15 people.
Service: very nice, especially as we're familiar faces.
Ambience: gentle easy listening radio. That's it.

-Katsu Don (pork). Not so great. Cud have eaten another one or two. Bit flavourless. Nice texture.

-Bento box: beef was average. Katsu chicken very nice. Like we make at home.

Nuts Chan seems to have a loyal regular customer base. Nice to have someone else cook for you, hey? Back to Waya, Kingsway next time.

The name gives an impression of quirky cuteness, however the dining experience shut that impression down. We were seated at the only table for two in the front of the place (all other tables are in the back dining area through a little doorway). It's not bad if you want more privacy though, and this didn't really phase my impressions. The food didn't really either. As other reviews have pointed out the servings are small, but we supplemented with some entrees. The Nuts Chan Bento was quite nice, with sukiyaki beef, gyoza, katsu chicken and miso soup; all of which were very pleasant. The yasai korokke was good and seemed legitimately homemade, while the sashimi was not bad, but a bit lacking in freshness. The nabe-udon was nothing special and quite bland in flavour. I suppose there was a few authentic elements to the food, but maybe my view is also influenced due to the coldness of the staff. 'Cold' might be overstating it, but their demeanour wasn't what you'd like or expect anywhere, let alone from Japanese staff. Of course, I don't expect them to be like staff in Japan itself would be, but I expect at least a normal standard of welcoming attitude and politeness. I'd heard there's been a management change in recent times so I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it. The waitress and the sashimi chef behind the counter were the ones who we had the most contact with. They never smiled, they just went through the motions. Whenever the waitress brought something out she placed it on the table roughly, with a clatter and a bang. She didn't have an ounce of welcome or cheer about her. The only other lady who came out once seemed to be Chinese, and she was quite friendly and more delicate in her demeanour. Even though the food was nice, considering the portion sizes and the attitude of the staff combined, I don't think it is worth the trip or the money for me.

Food is really average, portion size is tiny, $16 a bento is quite steep, after finishing the bento I was still hungry, no wonder why they are quiet, will not be going back for sure

good honest japanese. you wouldnt take your date here by any means but more then a pass mark for japanese on the go or on your lunch break. Check it out if your in the area and craving some sushi!

A cozy and authentic japanese restaurant. Had katsu-donburi and it was delicious. Presentation wise could be better. The price is reasonable. The owners are not japanese, probably korean. I came on a hot day, and was offered me a bottle of cold water from the fridge. Will come back to try others.

I had the chirashi for lunch and really enjoyed it. There was a decent portion of fish and it tasted quite fresh. Service is attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy; it feels like you're eating at a friend's house. Would come here again.
Filled With Food
My friends and I came here on a Wednesday night at 6pm and it was pretty quite. The restaurant was small and a little rundown but the food tasted authentic and delicious. It is owned by a local Japanese family. For entree we ordered a plate of takoyaki, which are octopus pan cake balls. These ones tasted homemade as the skin wasn’t crispy or deep fried like other ones I’ve had and the balls weren’t identically perfect. They were soft, sweet and juicy, topped with Katsuobushi shavings. $7.00

Came here the for the first time. Really thought my Yasai Koroke (spelling?) was magnificent. SHame the shop front doesn't give it justice as its worth a go.

I've been here multiple times, and the food and service is consistently great!
The donburi are tasty and filling, while the ramen and udon soups are light and refreshing. The croquettes are also fantastic: golden and crispy!
Portion sizes and prices are quite reasonable and their menu features many popular Japanese dishes.
Meals here are always pleasant and satisfying!
I really recommend this underrated Japanese joint for anyone who lives both near and afar!

Good Japanese food at a really reasonable price. Simple decor and friendly service make for a good low price meal for a pleasant quick meal out.

If you're looking for cheap Japanese eats, this 'best kept secret' would be it. It's good, fresh, quick and no frills.

If you come here with a big group, best to reserve and take the entire room!

First of all, Nuts-chan is the chef's daughter's nick name (short for Natsuko-chan). I write this because, due to the name, it took me a year to walk through the front door. And since I did, I'm a regular. This is authentic Japanese and Korean food in an unpretentious setting. Try the nabiyaki udon on a cold day and tell me it's not heavenly. The sushi and sashimi is also of extremely high quality.

Having found Nuts-Chan after copious amounts of browsing on Urbanspoon, we decided to head over to check out the suburban Japanese restaurant which is owned and run by a Japanese family. Yasai Korokke - crumbed and deep fried mashed potato and vegetable 2p ($5.50) Christina loved these croquettes! They were freshly fried, crisp and crunchy with a generous filling of mashed potato and vegetables. One of the best we've had in Melbourne.

Kim really likes this Japanese place. We have been going here for nearly 10 years. Its a small family owned restaurant. It hasn't been updated in a long time. The family is nice and friendly. The food is fresh and tasty. For Entree's we had Takoyaki. Takoyaki is a wheat batter with octopus in it. Its sweet and kind of juicy We get this or Nasu Denggaku and that is deep fried eggplant with miso paste. Which we always enjoy. For our mains I had the Niku-udon and its beef with udon noodles. Normally i get the Bento box which is really great but i thought i would try something different. It was alright. It was a big serving of soup and noodles. The noodles are always cooked perfectly, they never disintegrate and that's always a good thing. Kim had the Tempura- Udon, it is Noodle soup with vegetable tempura. She seemed to enjoy it a lot. Normally she gets the Nabeyaki-udon, but she was not that hungry. We always like supporting the local small businesses. So we will always be b

A while ago, my brother and I went for a quick weeknight dinner at Nuts Chan, Mount Waverley. When I first saw it on Urbanspoon, I giggled to myself (doesn't the name sound a little strange?) but then decided to give it a try after reading all the good reviews. We wanted to share a few dishes instead of having a main each, so first we ordered some sashimi. We were served a lovely variety of fresh fish for a very reasonable price. My brother and I are sashimi junkies so needless to say, we enjoyed this dish very much! Next up we had some agedashi tofu. For me, agedashi tofu is one of those dishes that don't really stand out, but is always comforting to have. It definitely warmed up our tummies! I introduced my brother to korokke (croquette) that night! We ordered the yasai korokke (vegetable croquette), which was crispy on the outside and filled with mushy potato and vegetable goodness inside. Finally, we ordered okonomiyaki (savoury pancake). I'm not a big fan of okonomiyaki as I alwa

Nuts Chan, even though it has a bit of a funny sounding name, is a great little local japanese restaurant. I have frequented the Mount Waverley area for many year, and have never even noticed it hiding out in it's little corner shop location. We went there for a quiet weeknight dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the freshness and homely-ness of the food they served. To start we ordered a mixed sashimi plate, and for mains, I chose the Bibimbap with Beef, and E decided on the Tonkatsu (pork) on steamed rice. All of the dishes were served very quickly, and with very polite service. The sashimi was all very fresh and tasty. I think we got the larger size. Mixed Sashimi For mains, E gobbled up his Tonkatsu dish pretty quickly - it must have been really good! I had a little taste of one of the pork pieces, and it was really good - their had been an egg placed on top of the dish, and it had soaked through all of the pork and rice - mmmm! Tonkatsu with Rice My dish, was incredibly fresh, and just

I have to agree the reviews below , the curry is a complete ripoff. 3 small pieces of meat and one piece of carrot

Tasty family made Jap food. Nice small family owned restaurant. I go here with my mates quite often. Convenient place geographically and it's the ideal spot to have a chat and enjoy some traditional food. Will continue to return in the future.
MarieA
Writing this out of rage, I ordered the curry for 9.50 and I'm not exactly sure where that money goes because I literally got rice sauce 3 small pieces of meat and 1 big chunk of carrot, I'll upload a photo.. The sauce is not bad but you can tell it's just straight up instant. Ripped off hard cos I basically paid 10 bucks for rice.
I can't comment much on the customer service because there was none, they seated us and never came back..
Never. Going. Back. Ever.

Very meh takeaway. Had massive sushi cravings for lunch and it was the nearest restaurant. Paid $14 for two pretty average sushi rolls takeaway. And there was no wasabi, and the soy sauce came in sachets rather than the little fish (which is why we buy sushi). Was pretty disappointed, but I know that was only a very small sample of the restaurant. I'm willing to give it a go another time, but will definitely steer clear for a quick takeaway lunch.
Little.miss
Great gem of a restaurant that I wish I had known about sooner! Although small this place serves delicious, good quality food at a very cheap price. Had the vege bento box, which was large n contained some agedashi tofu and croquette cooked to perfection. Will def be back to sample more! Friendly service too

Come here all the time for Chirashi Sushi

Love this place. 2 favourite dishes 1) sukiyaki and 2) nabeyaki udon

Cheap and cheerful. Family run business- always friendly and welcoming. Quick and efficient service. Fresh and delicious food. Will return and continue to recommend to others.

Pleasant. After reading reviews, I wanted to try this place for myself. It was a little troublesome trying to find the restaurant at first. The front of the store was a typical little restaurant. The front of the store doesn't give you an idea whether it is a sit in restaurant as the front counter has a sushi roll display. My friends were asking me where they sit but we hadn't even stepped in yet. Past the front counter was a tiny little room that would've been 3m x 5m small. It could only cater for 16 people! Walls are plain and it looks like someone has made their home into a restaurant. It was obvious this place needed an upgrade. They also had a tiny little heater in the corner. The ones that you'd find at Kmart for your bedroom.
The food was good. The cream korokke was true to its name. Very soft and creamy with a crispy outer texture. The tartare sauce helped it come along too. The Teriyaki Chicken Don was a bit bigger compared to my other friend's rice dishes. It smelled delicious once it was placed under my nose. It tasted delicious too! The portion size seemed bigger than my friend's dishes... or maybe that was just the size of the bowl? My meal cost $16 all up.
(My friends had the potato salad. It's quite funny because it's potato mash with coleslaw through it.)

My partner is from overseas and refused to try sushi. After nagging him to try it out (as all women do) he has fallen in love with nuts chan and goes at every opportunity available. I've been coming here for years and you've gained another fan my "non-sushi eating" partner! Well done!

Nuts about nuts chan. We wanted to try Japanese food for the first time and found nuts chan. Soo glad we did. It is oishii...delicious. Going back?? you bet we are, and cant wait! Beautiful food, service, people and price! Arigato nuts chan!

Amazing food, very cheap! Great service and speedy cooking, i love the simple cozy atmosphere and the food is authentic.
A while ago they changed management but the food, service and atmosphere are still top notch! They even expanded the menu. This is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Melbourne.
Highly recommend.

Overpriced? or skinny mini menu?. This was the first time I've ever felt so hungry leaving a restaurant. when the food came i was shocked! it looked like i ordered a happy meal. the bowl was small, the noodles were little, the meat was countable. and my bowl looked bare. Don't get me wrong, the food's fair, but i was starving even though i finished my meal.

My boyfriend ordered a deluxe bento box. sounds AMAZING and man-size we were so shock when it was just A patty of meat 2 sashimi slices and some little clump of meat.

Food portions was way disappointing. Its either that or really really overpriced. Seriously, a hungry man is an angry man.

Cream Korokke. By far the best korokke I've tasted!

Amazing food both in regards to taste and quality, the ingredients are always fresh... Very friendly staff who always pays attention to detail, definitely a place I will keep visiting... Nuts Chan has given me a strong passion for sushi...! Must visit...!

My favourite restaurant. Dined here last night. My girlfriend and I had this place recommended to us by the Japanese teacher at the local primary school. Years on, it is still our favourite restaurant.

I noticed that they have now placed a heater in the middle of the room (possibly in response to a previous review on here?). Anyway, it certainly wasn't cold.

My favourite dishes at Nuts Chan are: Cream Korokke, Sukiyaki, Katsu-don, eggplant with miso paste, Nabeyaki udon. The sushi is also excellent. I feel the sashimi is an area of relative weakness. It's certainly decent, but everything else seems even better!

Although I really like their decor it may be more homely than would be desirable for a first date or anything very formal. This is more of a casual dining establishment.

I only have one major complaint - they do not offer any home delivery service!
John Boxall
Cheap, cheerful and chilly. Went for dinner last week on a whim. Service great, food must regularly be ok as some Japanese diners were in the room with us. Nice takoyaki with plenty of shaved bonito. Pork katsudon a little smaller than expected. Sushi rolls fresh but OK. However the place was freezing, a cold draught right through the place. If you're in Glen Waverley and must have Japanese, head in.
Hungry Swan
Best value and DELICIOUS Jap in the Eastern Suburbs. Nuts Chan is downright my favourite Japanese restaurant of its caliber in the Eastern burbs. It's extremely well priced and the food is so tasty, and very Japanese. My favourite would be the cream crab korokke, followed by the eggplant with miso paste, and the Japanese curry. Even the basics, like the sobas and katsu-don are delish. It makes me wish I lived in Mt Waverley.

I would definitely recommend this if you're hungry for some Japanese and want a low-key lunch or dinner (they don't do alcohol). I could eat here everyday! (and it wouldn't break the bank).
Justine La
Cheap and Delicious. This place is a local shop so a friend and I decided to try it out. So glad we found this gem! I really like japanese cuisine, and this place easily beats other places you would pay a lot more for. I loved the cream korroke and katsu curry I ordered, and my friend enjoyed her teriyaki chicken. The owners are Japanese as well so it's authentic! Definitely returning to this place

Yummy japanese!. Visited Nuts Chan tonight, and we'll definitely be back. Service was friendly and food was pretty decent for the price. Standard japanese menu but very tasty and quite authentic! Finally found some decent japanese food in Mt Waverley - hooray!

Small place in mount waverley very easy to access with lots of parking. Great to eat in or take away. Food is made to order so expect to wait 15-20mins. Clean and friendly. Like the chirashi (sashimi with rice) and nasu dengaku (eggplant with miso). Good price.

Absolute Favourite. Nuts-chan (chan = child and Nuts short for Nutsuki) is named after the original owner's daughter. Not a fancy place - has mis-matched furniture (looks like a few bargains from an op shop), I was introduced to this restaurant by my daughter who discovered that if you are charming enough the cook will make you a number of things off-menu. I vacillate between the Katsu-curry or one of the bentoes; sometimes I have a donburi; but everything tastes like it did when we lived in Japan at half the price.
BH
So excited I've found a nice local take away Japanese restaurant! Prompt service, good value and very tasty!
Bcarpenter
Quick, fresh and tasty Japanese food. Value for money.

Has a very small room out the back with a few tables in it for eating in. Service was efficient and the food good and well priced. Note that there is no BYO so think of it as an eatery.

Nuts chan is located on The Highway in Mount Waverley. From the name, you would never guess what type of food it was. At best, you would guess it's a Chinese restaurant. But it's actually a Japanese take away and restaurant. We walk through the front end
