So pleased with the food. The eggplant masala was a hit. Thought the butter chicken was more on the sweet side, but still really good. This was the first time we went so we went for the popular options but well worth it. Would go again.
Fantastic food overall. Curry was flavoursome and every bite was a delight. The other highlight was their Roti, fluffy and freshly made, best we've had so far. We ordered a rice dish each and substituted the rice for Roti, best decision yet.
My favourite restaurant, period. I have been frequenting Riks Mahal for several years since they first opened and have enjoyed consistently great food and service at a great price.
The decor is nothing to write home about, but i don't care...i go for the food and have never been disappointed.
My Favourites include: Chicken 65, Chicken Curry, Mutton Curry, Beef Rendang, Dahl Curry, Roti, Hydrabadi Byriani, and my kids love the Butter Chicken. I have tried this type of food all over the world, and we are lucky to have this little gem a stones throw from home.
Local restaurants that are overpriced and underwhelming need to pay attention to Riks Mahal, a quality player in the industry !!!!
Amazing eggplant curry. Service can sometimes be a little slow during peak times but that is a clear indication of the quality of food that this outlet offers. You just have to keep coming back.
Not many people in the area would actually realize that this place sells THE MOST LEGIT Indian/Sri Lankan curry around!! Sooooo good. Fast food style, but sooooooo good. Seriously. Get on it, people. P/S: Mutton Curry is the way to go. Always!!
This place is actually so good! Amazing authentic & cheap Indian food. The butter chicken is amazing, as well as the tandoori chicken & dahl. Would defs recommend if you’re in the area. The staff are super friendly as well

One of the best Indian restaurants in the South Eastern suburbs. I’ve tried pretty much all the different curries and let me assure you, all of them were a 10/10. As they say “Don’t judge a book by it cover” likewise don’t judge this place by its ambiance. If you’re not comfortable with the dining area I’d recommend go for take away and get a rich flavour of Indian spices. Quality, quantity and price would want you to come here over and over again. Highly recommended.

Popped by the other week after reading some great reviews. The homemade curries were amazing the meat super soft and the curry full of flavour. The serving size was huge for what you pay for so it's great value for money. The interior/ ambience is shabby looking but I don't really mind as long as the foods good.
Friendly staff constantly buzz around the kitchen area, and the result is quick service. The masala dosas are tasty and very generous in size. The yellow split pea dhal & (perfectly cooked) rice is excellent, and the lassis taste just like the ones I used to get in Pahar Ganj, Delhi. The roti-based dishes look like very good value, and there is a lot of variety on the menu. Even Gado-Gado is on offer. The bain marie seems to be dominated by meat dishes - so carnivores rejoice!
Maybe the interior is old. But we love the food! As malaysian you can finally eat in a restaurant just like THE MAMAK STALL.Really yummy food, The mee goreng we had is a MUST ORDER! Staff aren't bad that the reviews mentioned. Quite friendly.Will be back to riks mahal if I go to Narre Warren
This place is a pleasant surprise and well worth a visit if you are in the area. It is not the kind of place you go to for a posh meal (it is basically a cheap diner), but the quality and value for money was exceptional. Can you really complain about a roti like this for $4.00? They also deliver food to your car if you could not be bothered walking inside. McD look out--this place is a serious threat.

Needed an indian fix. Looked a few up and this was the only one open. Went in to pick up takeaway and saw it was a small little cafe looking place.
Wached as they cooked up our meals fresh.
Chicken curry was hot and full of flavour.
Lamb roganjosh was ok.
Malaysian style chicken curry was great! But too small...
Naan bread delicious.
Roti delicious
Chappati also nice.
Hyderabad byriani was no good.. and according to some people we ate with who are from Hyderabad they said its no way Hyderabad byriani...
Overall i was satisfied and full.
Will i get this again? I will try others first but i wouldnt say no. Infact i really did like the malaysian curry... toobad its an indian place 😕
Excellent curries. Must tries are the beef rendang and chicken 65. Whilst the rendang isnt exactly authentic to malaysian rendang, the curry sauce has clearly been simmered long enough for the sugars to caramelise, imparting an umami flavour that you just can't get enough of. Havent tried any of the non-curry items yet but if you like real curries this is a must-try.
I eat here regularly and the food is impeccable every time! I particularly love their butter chicken, lamb korma, beef vindaloo and eggplant masala. Staff are friendly and always serves you with a smile.
This place is too far! But my loss is Narre Warren's gain. It's true that the interiors aren't the best. But, if you can look past that, you'd be well rewarded.
With only $40, a friend and I have an awesome feast. We had a generous portion of onion bhajis, a vegetarian kofta with cashew sauce, a lamb/rice dish, tea tare, mango lassi and two portions of dessert. Not only was it affordable - but the flavours were really enjoyable too. Note that the mango lassi was pretty sweet, as was the desserts (which was somewhat expected of an Indian dessert).
This is one of the few places that I've eaten at within the last few months that I'd intentionally come back to.

Don’t let the interiors fool you. Riks Mahal looks likes a hole in a wall and lacks charm that said, the food is delicious and extremely inexpensive. This restaurant reminds me of back home in Malaysia, it looks like a typical mamak stall and I like that appeal. My go to at Riks Mahal is the plain roti canai with dhals and curry sauce ($4.00), an extra roti canai ($2.50), three vadas and a teh tarik ($5.00 – promotion). The roti canai is buttery, soft and slightly crispy and it’s not at all oily. The glass of steaming hot and frothy teh tarik can sometimes be on the sweeter side, so if you don’t like your teh tarik to be too sweet you can ask them to go easy on the condense milk, usually the sweetness is just nice. Sometimes I’ll get the plain thosai with sambar and chutney ($5.00 – you can order the thosai soft or crunchy) as it’s pretty good. I’ve ordered the roti tissue once but it was a bit disappointing as the height of the roti tissue was more on the shorter side. Only a bit of sugar was sprinkled on the roti tissue and it was covered with only a small amount of condensed milk. This is good for people who don’t like their roti tissue to be overly sweet but I like my roti tissue to be so sweet until I can feel my teeth falling off. Outdoor seating is available, but the tables and chairs looks dirty. You can get a jug of water near the front counter and your own cutlery. Service is not bad. I haven’t tried any of the curries but I will one day as it looks tasty. By the looks of it, Riks Mahal is the cheaper brother of Rich Mahal in Forest Hill/Vermont. My meal is of always of good quality and I recommend this place if you’re not fuss about the ambience, service or cleanliness. And that makes it a true mamak stall.
Really Really good Curry has always been the place for flavoursome curry and and variety. I wish the place was a little nicer to dine in! Tables not always cleaned and a lil crammed!
Had dinner here last night. What an amazing little gem for malaysian indian food tucked away in the south east. I have eaten at many indian places and i think that this is one of the best by far. All their food is great but not the cleanest place. Service is excellent and with a smile

I'm here at least once a week for the last 2 years to dine in with the family or take away on my way back from work. And if you want value for money and a great service, no one will beat these guys.
The Food is tasty and the portions are great. Love their Maggi (mee) Goreng, even though finding chicken pieces in it is hard.
They have a nice variety and a range from North to South Indian and Sri Lankan. I have virtually tried every single dish and cannot find any fault.
The food taste & quality has not gone down since they started.

Unique, tasty and convenient location just off the freeway. Plenty of variety, reasonably priced and all good. Ranges in spicy, salty, sweet, tangy and bold curries.
The egg roti and curry from here is an absolute favourite. Their meals are great value for money and offer a variety of choices to satisfy any level of spice craving I might have. Other than the fantastic food, my favourite thing about this place is the friendly staff and service. The guys here really know their customer service!

I love the butter chicken and roti canai here. And you have to have the teh tarik (tea made with condensed milk like back in asian countries. The boy that's ALWAYS behind the counter, day or night is extremely friendly and knows his hospitality extremely well. We go here when we want a quick bite for eg. after work
Yummy food and generous portions! Enjoyed a fuss free dinner here with friends first here 2 years ago and we are hooked since. It's our go to place always. I am so glad this place exists in the south east. Generous portions and no compromise on what is offered for the price we pay. I have never once walked away feeling dissatisfied. Great food, great service, great prices..... The guys at Riks Mahal friendly and polite, their prices are excellent, their Chicken 65 fresh roti and stuffed roti's ( especially the chicken) are fantastic.
Good south Indian food... At reasonable rates!
Their ambience and taste gave us back those nostalgic memories of South Indian food streets and food courts. We are great fans of Kothu roti. Fruit salad ice cream is hard to miss, my kids absolutely love it. We did not enjoy their Biriyani much though. (May be due to personal preferences). The owner and staff are really well- behaved and polite, always with a smile on their face. The owner is very down to earth and extremely non-judgmental. He is so humble and simple that we always thought he was one of the service staff.
Very much a hidden gem! Fresh, tasty and good value. This is a place to go where you want great food without the frills. It is worth a try, you won't be disappointed.
