Review Restaurant 16 - Neutral Bay

M So
An Italian inspired Japanese restaurant, situated in Neutral Bay. It has an intimate setting, that has very friendly service. Perfect for a date night or want quiet atmosphere. We tried all the options on the night - uni, truffle and otoro. The food was delicately prepared and the small dishes reminded me of kaiseke in Japan. Flavours generally well balanced and overall wasn't too heavy. At the end of the night, was quite full. We did have some minor issues with the sashimi, but it was addressed promptly. Highly recommend for people to come and try 👍😋

What an amazing resturant. Run by couple, only serve few tables every night. Mix Japanese and Italian food, creative and delicious. Highly recommend!!

I normally wouldn't order pasta with cream sauce but so glad I did tonight. The cod roe infused cream sauce was so flavoursome that I felt I could lick the plate afterwards. There could be no doubt that this was created by a Japanese chef, who adds a subtle Japanese twist to Italian dishes and elevates the taste. The owners were extremely polite and attentive; I'll definitely go back for more.

What a fabulous local! Chef Toro Ryu!! Well done! As always fantastic food n service👌 Celebrating another friend’s birthday last night. We chose the very yummy Omakase ( Degustation ) menu of 7 spectacular dishes; yesterday’s special was with the most delicious n sweet Sea urchin from Japan... for a person who doesn’t eat sea urchin , it was delicious!! Thank you v much Table 16 ( Restaurant 16) for delivering the 5 Star service n food always! A must visit if you’ve never been.👍😝

Beautiful food, great presentation, it's an always changing degustation menu - be hungry, though the servings are appropriately small, there are a lot of them!

I normally rate restaurants by the star system but Restaurant 16 I will rate by hearts because It is the very first Restaurant I have been to that deserves it. Five hearts would be the very best but after my first visit there with my Wife we both give it 7 out of 5 hearts We both had the Bruschetta to begin with and was flavour plus. Then the Scallops which I must say the best ever! My Wife had the Pork loin and for me it was the T-Bone. Both absolutely perfectly cooked to our request. Both very tender and the sauces were amazing. On the side we had roast potatoes and beans, perfect again. Congratulations Restaurant 16 PERFECT.

Wow what a find!!

I would have walked past this place 100 times on Military Rd and never realized it would be one of the best meals I've had in Sydney.

I'd prefer to eat here any day of the week over Quay, Cafe Sydney, Aria or Est.

Simple but amazing quality food cooked to perfection.

The Lamb Ragu was 10/10 beautiful flavours and the pasta cooked to perfection. The Rack of Lamb was 11/10 perfectly cooked medium as ordered with a red wine reduction to die for!!

Service was attentive never a dry glass, very friendly and knowledgeable staff and a homely feel!!

There wasn't a thing left on the plate everyone loved their meal.

Will definitely be returning for our next night out!
Ordered:
1. Bruschetta - small but tasty
2. Special homemade beef and pork pasta - it had a weird taste that I can't explain, I'm not sure if it's coming from the herb or the pasta itself
3. Veggie sides - the potato was bland
4. Apple dessert dish and lemon tart - these two dessert dishes were the highlight of the night. They were amazing! Best to order two and alternate between them, the sweet of the apple goes well with the bitter lemon taste.

Service: really friendly, warm and welcoming

Will I go back: yes, I'll try another pasta next time.

A cozy place with a wonderful twist on italian food.

The attentive hosts obviously love their food and describe it in detail.

It's a relaxed approach to fine dining.

In an area filled with generic restaurants, this is the best kept secret on the lower north shore.

We don’t usually celebrate Valentine’s Day, but this year we decided to do something different and and give ourselves a treat at Restaurant 16 in Neutral Bay which had a special 5 course Valentine’s menu....Overall, we give this place a Tozanita Rating of 9.5/10. We would love to go back to try the other dishes which weren’t on the Valentines day special menu.

Pretty good overall. It had potential to be exciting but didn't quite get there.

Located in the heart of the restaurant strip along Military road in Neutral Bay, Restaurant 16 dishes up elegant Italian food with a twist.

Japanese head chef Toru Ryu used to be behind the kitchen burners at prominent Italian eatery Buon Ricardo with Armando Percuoco. We were impressed by some exciting flavours on our previous visit and decide to try a few new dishes tonight.

This is a beautiful meal and I can’t help but think the creativity of Sydney’s chefs and the similarities between Asian and Italian cuisines will sprout more cutting edge dishes that combine traditional flavours with fresh innovative cooking.
Eating In Sydney
..Restaurant 16 didn’t let me down one bit. All the dishes were incredibly delicious and the service, wow! This is how all restaurants should be. All the waiters were genuinely friendly, always eager to help in every which way they could. And to top it all off, the Head Chef (Toru Ryu – who used to work at the Two Hat restaurant, Buon Ricordo) came out after our meals and had good old chat to us. What a way to finish of an excellent dining experience!

I’m going to write a lazy review of what I thought was just plain lazy food.

Disappointing!. Unfortunately the hype around this place didn't stand up when my wife and I visited last Saturday night.

Now, I can overlook our wine coming 20 minutes late, being seated under the air conditioner which leaked onto our table and my head and even the minimal wine list (five reds to choose from with an average bottle of $50+!). But what I can't look past is TINY portion sizes at an Italian restaurant.

We started with the bruschetta (a great example of how simple Italian food can be turned into something delicious) and although it was good, the pieces were TINY! You would have to order two portions per person to meet an entree size. But even so, all was still not lost because I had ordered the pasta....oh the disappointment! I received TWO (2) pieces of ravioli on a plate drenched in a dark, rich and generally flat tasting sauce. For $26 a plate I was shocked and unfortunately will probably not go back as a result.

Not only did I leave hungry, a cardinal sin at an Italian restaurant but....wait a second, need I go on. A very disappointing evening.

Terrific! The staff are charming and very professional, the restaurant is quite small and intimate, and not too noisy so you can actually hear the person next to you and the food was delicious. My friend had the trout entree, I had the papadelle with beef and pork ragu, my husband had the spatchcock which was perfectly cooked followed by a slice of orange tart served with a scoop of vanilla icecream, absolutely delicious. We'll certainly be back.

I really enjoyed our meal here, professional, personable and very tasty.

Food was fabulous but portions were miniscule. The price tag is pretty outrageous (over $100 for two and still not full) when you take into account the middling decor and enthusiastic but unpolished service. I was amazed that their chef was Asian though. Food was impressive.

Restaurant 16, Neutral Bay. Nice Italian food with a modern and refreshing twist. Head chef Toru Ryo is skillful in combining flavours with fresh seasonal ingredient.

Great Italian. Restaurant 16 combines the best of Japanese hospitality and cooking with an Italian menu. The two starters would impress in better Japanese restaurants and were of a quality rarely encountered in Italian restaurants in Sydney. The two pasta dishes were perfectly executed and combined beautiful presentation with intensity of flavour in the finest Italian tradition. The service is charming and Rest 16 passes the test of a great restaurant when the whole experience is even better than the sum of the parts.

Great food & service been back 3 times & working way through the menu

I'll be back!!!. What a wonderful find. Cool looking place, great atmosphere, beautiful food, great menu, excellent and friendly service. Cant wait to go back.

Five star!. We wandered into this tiny local eatery while looking for somewhere different to eat. It was a bit unusual to go into an Italian restaurant completely staffed by Japanese but what a good decision we made that night. Everything about the place is top notch. It's a tiny restaurant with only about 10 tables and an equally tiny, but varied menu. We started with the stuffed Zucchini flowers which were deep fried 'tempura style'. A lovely light, non greasy batter and a divine filling.
The veges with our mains came out first - a bit disconcerting, but they were immediately followed by my Papadrelle with crab, tomatoes with just the right amount of chilli and garlic - nothing too overpowering for the crab. The pasta was hand made and cooked to al dente perfection. My partner had the boned spatchcock which was moist and tender and stuffed with bacon and mushrooms.
We were too full to try the deserts unfortunately - maybe next time!
Apart from the food, it was the great service which we really appreciated - the water glass always kept topped up with chilled water - no need to ask, the complementary bruschetta before the meal was more than a token thimble full, fresh, tasty and well presented, the friendly service by someone who was obviously enjoying her job made it an enjoyable experience (well, she is the owners wife!).
The wine list is interesting, from a variety of countries and reasonably priced - from $30 - $50. We brought our own.
As long as the menu changes regularly, we will be back often.

LOVE IT!!. Just tried a new restaurant in Neutral Bay called Restaurant 16. After reading great reviews and comments from friends, it was time I tried it for myself. Two words.. freakin awesome.

I'm not usually one for seafood, but after trying their specials and their cured trout entree, it's now on my list of favourites!!

I will definitely be back to try other things and I can't recommend it enough. It's got a little something for everyone.

Two thumbs up!!
