Review Hayes Street Wharf Bistro - Neutral Bay

Came here today with my boyfriend, the fish tasted mushy with a werid taste. Initially we thought it was just a very tender fish... Soon after lunch we both had upset tummy, diarrhea and nauseated. Wouldn't come back again.

Really liked it, except for the fish, but everything else was superb!

Quite place. Not much crowded when we went. (Sunday evening dinner.) Needs Reservations though. The service was alright. The chef does come in and asks if it tasted alright. The food was alright. It wasn’t anything out of ordinary. It’s decent tasting food. The desert though caramel ice cream tasted really yummy ! The beef brisket was nicely cooked and loved the texture. Overall if your a foodie and like to try different cuisines you could give this a try.

We had the "Degustation Menu" six course set menu. It was absolutely delicious. Carefully prepared and served. The restaurant has a very relaxing ambience, no loud thrashing background music and great service. Recommended to anyone looking for a nice place to have a meal.

Ok food and decor...fairly overpriced but used a voucher. Wasn't the best value even with the voucher. Waiter spilled a FULL glass of wine on a couple next to us and didn't even offer to given them a couple of glasses of wine complimentary. Very slow service given 4 people in the restaruant. Wasn't terrible but very average. Wonder if they listen to any of these comments as I have read plenty of them and very little change. Have to change their model/approach....could be amazing as great little spot.

In a great location, 1 minute walk from Neutral Bay wharf. Unfortunately the service from the waiters was substandard in my opinion. A dropped wine glass, and reversed cutlery was indication of poor training. As for the food? Well I used a voucher, and I would have felt ripped off if I was paying full price. I had a degustation menu. Taste was nothing special, and presentation wasn't the best. Although the kids did enjoy their fish and chips, calamari, and chicken schnitzel.

Food looked nice, but there was no real taste to it. Below average food. Wait staff had a gloomy look on their faces, making the atmosphere a little uncomfortable. And why is half a glass of your standard brand of wine $25? If it was some good wine, that'd be a different story.

THE WORST SERVICE EVER STAY AWAY If you enjoy rude waiters and poor service then this place is for you. . The waiter was dressed in bright red gym shoes and appeared to be a customer not a waiter. Hardly what you would expect from a fine dining restaurant. The customer service was really poor. We had booked a table through first table and even though the restaurant was empty, they told us they were fully booked. We explained we had driven from the other side of town, we had no idea where else we could eat and pleaded that we would eat quickly and leave, only to be told no. No apologies no smile, it was kinda of french in their approach. NEVER AGAIN

We came here with a Groupon voucher for a 6 course meal. The restaurant was relatively quiet for a Saturday. The dishes were overall nicely flavoured, although some could have been improved. The crab bisque was very watery and it would have been nice to have some bread with the dish. Also, the wagyu brisket dish was very very salty and disappointing. On the plus side, the john dory was great, and the banana tart tartin was very well made - crispy and well caramelised, would definitely recommend dish.

Great, well balanced french food except for the strange diluted lobster bisque. Decent service. Very close to the wharf for a walk before or after dinner. We used a groupon.

Came here for a casual dinner with my husband. We were keen to have some Italian/ French food. Just found the right place. Great food and amazing service. Literally everything we orders was absolutely yum. Presentation well defined :)
Will certainly dine again.

A short stroll from Neutral Bay Wharf, Hayes Street Wharf Bistro is an Italian and French restaurant with a bit of a passion for seafood.

We noticed this from their seafood platter, complete with fish, scampi, octopus, calamari, oysters, mussels and chips. The stand outs for us were the scampi and calamari as they were well prepared and tasted super fresh.

Hayes Street Wharf Bistro also do truffle butter and this butter had a perfect amount of truffle flakes, creating that beautiful earthy taste only truffle can provide. An amazing accompaniment to their bread.

The waitstaff were friendly and attentive and the food arrived without delay. Overall we had a nice experience and would recommend a visit.
We had a $99 Groupon voucher and went for lunch today. Firstly I must say that the food was nowhere near as sparse as tengjudy (a recent reviewer op Trip Advisor) mentioned. A large serving of very nice chips, 2 butterflied very large prawns, 12 average pieces of salt and pepper squid, 6 mussels in chilli sauce, 8 baby octupi, 2 smallish kilpatrick oysters and a fillet of Dory (I suspect that the lack of a black mark on the skin meant it was mirror Dory and not John Dory as offered on the deal - it does state though that menu items may change). The best thing were the flavours - chilli mussels were the most complex and tasty chilli sauce I have had in a long time. The butterflied prawns also had a wonderful sauce and we were also impressed with the garlic aloi. The Dory and everything else was cooked very well. Was it valued at $200. I don't think so. The owner replied to tengjudy that there was extra fish compared to the normal $79.90 platter. We only had one average fillet of Dory between 2, so where is the extra fish? They also mentioned a large portion of salad compared to normal. Four olives and 8 small pieces of fetta wouldn't be much of an upgrade, and the size was average for two. Yes there was a bottle of wine included. Unlike the platter offer, which offered a Checkerboard Sav Blanc RRP Dan Murphys $10 we were given a Tolleys Watercolour Chardy RRP $4.75. It was a reasonable drop though. Both aren't on the wine list so can't say what the restaurant price would be. Overall a very enjoyable meal - not huge but not too stingy either and definitely worth up to $110-20 which is more than what we paid. we have walked out of other seafood platters of a similar price much fuller, but the flavours and the standard of cooking was better here. Service was fine but we were the only diners. Rated average due to the supposed $200 value - it wasn't. Would pay $99 to have it again.

Great offer of 3 courses for $60 especially when each course was so enjoyable and tasty. Lobster Entrée was beautiful with mango and delicious dressing on the salad. Main was beef bourguignon which just fell apart.. yum! Coupled with a great truffled mash, bacon and that sauce! Dessert was chocolate fondant... to die for! Cosy little restaurant away from typical busy locations. Loved it! Will definitely be back.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
This gold patterned little French hideaway on the sleepy streets of Neutral Bay is a hidden gem. In an age of share plates, it was nice to settle in for a three-course-meal of continental cuisine. I started with the delightful Chicken Liver Parfait ($16) with cherries, while my dining companion opted for Scallop and Crab Boudin Blanc ($18) – a kind of seafood sausage, served swimming in crab bisque and caviar...

The Hayes Street Wharf Bistro in Neutral Bay describes themselves thus “It is our aim is to be a favourite neighbourhood bistro serving modern French cuisine” and they do a great job of it. It’s a friendly, good quality French bistro in the heart of Neutral Bay. Away from the hustle and bustle of Military Road the Hayes Street Wharf Bistro is located half way down Hayes Street, on the way to ferry wharf.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Tucked away down Hayes Street - and in fact almost hidden - is the deliciously delightful Hayes Street Wharf Bistro.

They do have a clear French influence - but their food goes beyond this. Described as Modern French it has a range of influences touching its original base.

The brainchild of Gavin and Natasha Tuckwell, they've found a nicely cosy location to bring their dream to life.

It's clearly also a produce driven menu that stays small based on what's fresh and seasonally available and therefore it also constantly changes.
Excuse Me Waiter
Hayes Street Wharf Bistro is the definition of a hidden gem – the inconspicuous entrance on the slope up from the Neutral Bay wharf opens up to a gorgeous little restaurant that feels like it’s from the bygone glory days of the art deco era. It’s a full house on the Friday night that we visit and there’s a pleasant buzz throughout the place. We got settled in and picked a couple of entrees and mains from the succinct menu.
A very pleasant experience, service a little restrained but too liking. I had three courses of very nicely prepared in-season produce. The Waugh beef brisket bourguignon was delightful.

Hayes St Wharf Bistro is a small neighborhood restaurant located in Neutral Bay, just right by the ferry wharf. The restaurant serves up delicious French inspired cuisine in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, it seems to be quite a popular venue with the locals.
2 Hungry Guys
Located on and walking distance from the water, is a small French restaurant almost reminiscent of it’s counterparts back in Paris. Upon entering you’ll be greeted by two lovely female waitresses, and depending on whether or not you hold a camera with you, they’ll even know where to sit you down for the best lighting!
Weekendfoodescapes
On a cold winter's night, I visited Hayes St Wharf Bistro in Neutral Bay. It looks like all the locals had the same idea as the restaurant was packed! You have the option of a 3 course meal for $58 at Hayes St Wharf Bistro. For entree, I ordered the twice baked cheese souffle (below, $16 if you prefer to order individually) which was very cheesy with Gruyere cheese. The souffle is fluffy and cheesy. I suggest you order a side of bread with truffle butter ($2 per person) to absorb some of the delicious cheese sauce. The entree can be a bit rich without the bread. It was a delightful entree to have on a cold winter's night.

Hayes Street Wharf Bistro is a little bit of a quite neighborhood gem serving up delicious food and filled to the brim with local patrons, luckily for myself the restaurant is situated right by Neutral Bay wharf and is quite accessible from Circular Quay.

There’s something that they don’t tell you about cooking school when you sign up: that the education is nearly a decade behind what’s currently happening in the food scene. Scallop and crab boudin blanc, tomato crab bisque and black caviar, $18. Chicken Liver Parfait, Cherry Marmalade and Brioche, $16

Fantastic dinner experience at Hayes Street Wharf Bistro. The food was delicious. I had the John Dory which was cooked to perfection and so flavoursome. Entrees and desserts were sensational too. BYO is also a bonus!

Always reliable. Sydney is a food-lover's paradise for anyone who has to endure Perth's outrageous prices and back-packer service in all but a few restaurants. We always enjoy the Bistro, and well worth the 15-minute walk there and back from our kids' place. The food is unfailingly high quality and imaginative, a good wine list, a chance to enjoy BYO for those special bottles, and while the service is variable it's never been a real issue. The ambiance is cosy and we mostly find it full, so it's on the margin of noisy. If you like lamb shoulder, cooked to perfection, head for Hayes Street.

A forgotten gem. We're locals and this is one of the very few restaurants within walking distance. We went to its predecessor "Thirteen" several times and this is definitely an improvement. The decor hasn't changed, the food is much better, the service discreet and pleasant. The 2 course or 3 course menu is very reasonably priced, they accommodate BYO. We've always had good food, Modern French. Unbelievably, this restaurant is not busy, even on weekends, which actually makes it even more attractive. Maybe it's the location. Anyway, it's worth a visit.

Food fantastic, service poor. My husband and I enjoyed the degustation dinner here last Saturday night and the food was fantastic. Unfortunately the 3 service staff were hopeless, they had a lot of opportunities to upsell and failed - we had to ask for drinks they were never offered, they were so busy doing nothing that it was difficult to get their attention. We had previously purchased this dinner on line, however we didn't know what each individual dish would be and not once was the dish described in any way when served. Very disappointing. Would think twice about returning, even though the food was great.

Meal. Friday 24th October 2014. My husband and I had a sensational meal . Wagyu beef. Service first class. Early reservation at 6:00pm made all the difference for quietly enjoying a meal.
We will re visit.

High quality French food at a great price.. I love French bistro-style cuisine as it's very comforting. What Hayes St Wharf Bistro does very well is offer a high quality standard for food using fresh local produce at a good price.

I had the Wagyu beef brisket and my wife had the suckling pig. The flavours are also not heavy and overly rich like many other French restaurants that use high salt content or too much sauce. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, the pork loin from the suckling pig was tender and the skin crispy in texture. The beef bourguignon was braised well, as a knife was not even necessary to pull the meat apart.

Lovely French Bistro in Neutral Bay. The boudain blanc was delicious as was the confit de canard. Service was friendly and attentive.

It's ok but not a fanboy of the place unlike others.

Hidden Gem - MUST TRY!!!. I dined here with my partner last week, after taking a stroll around Neutral Bay. Boy are we happy that we walked into this place.

Soft, romantic ambiance, tasteful decor and a delightful menu.

We had the Scallop Boudin Blanc (which were perfectly cooked and SO tasty), together with the pork terrine which was just an explosion of flavour.

Next was the duck and sirloin! We both LOVE meat and it was really cooked to perfection, tender, succulent and served with all the right ingredients.

The sumptuous desserts of Banana Tarte and Chocolate Delice were absolutely phenomenal and capped off a perfect meal.

Just a short stroll to the beautiful shoreline of Neutral Bay, this is an amazing restaurant and we will certainly be recommending it to all our friends and family. Perfect for a cosy casual meal or romantic fancy evening!

Thumbs up!!!! :D
