Review Smoky Sue - Neutral Bay

Nice joint for American style smoky bbq. Ordered the Philly burger, nachos, hot wings and beef short rib plate. We had more than enough for 2. Hot wings were nice, a fairly traditional take on buffalo wings. Short rib was a highlight - incredibly tender, smoky & flavourful. Burger and nachos were disappointingly bland. I would definitely come back for the BBQ!

Serves low and slow cooked American style BBQ. Their meat were perfectly cooked and tender with a distinct taste. I absolutely loved their corned ribs. So good .

Smoking sue is good for smoke lover. Brisket is so delicious, totally recommended. Fries is so crispy and tasty. Others is ok. Atmosphere is also not bad. Love the place

Smoky Sue has been on my bucket list ever since their promo video popped up in my FB feed about a year ago.The 40km drive from North Shore was totally worth it.From amazing hospitality to delicious slow cooked meats,it was a stupendous experience.Perfectly slow cooked brisket and ribs are not easy to find where we live at least. The meat jus slides off the bone and the flavour is awesome.Couldn't try the burgers. Surely will be coming back for more.

Great American BBQ! Food is tasty (and not oily!) and their portion sizes are great for what you pay. Highlights were their fried chicken and their onion rings. I'll definitely be back here one day to try more of their dishes!

Looking for a great American BBQ venue? Then check out @smokysuesofficial in Maroubra or Penrith for a great range of “barbeque done different” inspired slow cooked and smoked meats, loaded burgers and more. If you are after a meat feast, this venue definitely will hit the spot and a perfect night out with the family or friends. Their meat platter was amazing, and their Ribby McRibface Burger was EPIC!! I also love their wings, which taste as good as the ones I love from the States.

Always a great feed when coming here, only reason am not giving 5 stars as I still think your portion sizes need increasing especially for the share platter. For the price you'd expect a bit more. Food quality is amazing and the taste and presentation is great, just work on increasing those portions or adding more to the platter and you have my 5 stars.

Friendly service team, quick order to table service. Free sparkling water. Large menu, reasonable prices, large meal portions, ok food, a little cold on arrival to table, but was all tasty and not greasy.

Without doubt the best smoked meat in Sydney, my fave is the brisket burger but the pulled pork is amazing. All the smoking is done in house and everything is melt in the mouth tender. Getting hungry just writing this - I cant eat burgers anywhere else now! (:

I stumbled across Smoky Sue's on Instagram of all places (the last place I go seeking eating out inspiration) and was ecstatic to see a BBQ place opened up on the lower North Shore. Now, I've eaten various types of BBQ through my journeys and in particular, the varieties offered across the US...and I have to be honest, my standards are high. Based on the pictures online Smoky Sue's definitely looked like it was vying for something similar to what can be experienced in the US, so I had to get down there and give them a go. Moreso, they even say it's the "best barbecue". With a hop & a skip down the road and the missus in tow, we walked into a very quiet Smoky Sue's. It was 5pm so I'm not fussed about the lack of people, better yet we're there before any chance of selling out (if you know your BBQ, you know it's not so easy just to cook more...). We were greeted by a friendly waitress who even stepped out to the front of the counter to guide us through the menu and ordering. We decided we would go with a 3 meat platter and a sandwich. When ordering the meats for the platter, I started by asking for the brisket first. The guy behind the counter popped his head up & told the waitress that there's no brisket. I'm thinking to myself "Just my luck, excited for some smoked brisket & they're out". However, the guy looks at us and says again that they don't have any brisket, then adds that they don't open until 5:30pm. Now hold on a second, your online times (FB & Google) are showing 12noon till late, we're here smack bang in the middle of your opening hours, walked through an open door and your friendly waitress came out from behind the counter to welcome us. I mentioned the times online & that I'm saddened to hear they're sold out of brisket. The guy reiterates that they don't open until 5:30pm and says that they don't have any brisket as it's not ready yet. I think ok cool, it's not ready, maybe we can come back later? I'm then told it won't be ready for another 10mins or so...thats fine mate, happy to wait...so we continue with ordering (by the way 1 point lost because of this guy's attitude working the counter). In the end, the meat platter choices were brisket, beef short rib, cheese jalapeno links (aka sausages), fries and a side of corn salsa. The sandwich was pulled pork and a side of mac & cheese bombs. We took our seats and not too long of a wait for our food to arrive, plus a red wine for the missus and a nice, cold Young Henry's Newtowner for myself. The food was presented well and looked the part. The pulled pork sandwich was a little dry but the flavour was good, a nice fresh crisp to the slaw. The mac & cheese bombs had a crispy crumbed coating, stringy cheesy texture but bland in flavour. Now for the platter...the fries were hot, crispy on the outside but quite dry, the corn salsa was very strong with the onion (I can still taste it now) and the cheese jalapeno links were tasty. For the beef short rib and brisket, something just didn't seem right. They both looked the part, I could see the dry rub they use and a smoke ring to boot. But the meat just fell apart way too easy, the short rib meat almost flew off the bone! The meat didn't have much flavour away from the rub (it wasn't bad, just bland) and the texture was almost a dry mushiness. Definitely not something slowly smoked over 6-8hrs, it was as if the meat was boiled or steamed prior. It didn't take us much longer to decide that the food wasn't impressive, so we finished our drinks and headed home. The entire way home I kept thinking about how the meat fell short of other offerings I've had, including places in Sydney like Taste of Texas in Waitara and Vic's Meat Market in Pyrmont. I was sure that the meat at Smoky Sue's was boiled or steamed! Upon arriving home, I checked them out again online and read the whole spiel that their barbecue is done different etc. Then I came to the point that halted me in my tracks...they sous vide the meat before smoking! That's it, that's what I felt was off about their smoked offerings...it all makes sense now. There really are some big claims made by Smoky Sue's, but to be completely honest just forget the "different". Don't try to reinvent the wheel unless you can actually make it better. Just make traditional style BBQ if you can, don't boil, don't steam, and don't sous vide your meat. Put it in that smoker you have upfront and leave it going all day. If you sell everything and people miss out, oh well, come earlier. If it's truly good, I promise they'll come back...at this point in time though, I won't be.

Truly tastes like good ole American BBQ! Highly recommend the share platter so you can try a few different things. The brisket is out of this world!!! Plus, the overall design is on point. Love this place :)

This evening I was out searching for something to eat and decided to come into the shop. I noticed a young fella (sorry I was out of high-school you would have started school so I'm only calling you young because I feel young around you and your lovely wife's age) taking a pic of a drink coming out of what looked liked a beer tap which I later found out wasn't beer. We struck up a convo and I found out they were part owners. I was invited to try some of Southern US comfort food and OMG it's amazing!!! I did quip about them not having any grits but then how many Australians would a) know what they are and b) like the taste. I was given the story of how the owners came up with the name. Trust me this is no dank, smelly, Formica tables and plastic table clothes like you'd find in so many Southern BBQ places. I was made aware that the place still has some re-modelling to be done but as it is it's family friendly with outstanding tasting and quality food. Personally I think it's what Cremorne needs. Good food, good people and none of the often found pretentiousness that you can find around here. I'm impressed with the couple I was speaking to just so friendly. Good luck with the business guys as I will be back next time in Sydney so you'd better be open!!! Support your local business.

Totally worth the trek. Melt in your mouth brisket was epic. And the brisket beans would be on a plate for my last supper!

I tried the Ribby McRibface burger, slaw, chips, and the Mac n cheese bombs. All were fresh and delicious, and it is evident that only the best quality ingredients are used. This is by far the best barbecue in Sydney, and it doesn’t leave you feeling like you have a bowling ball in your guts, even though the portions are huge! Super value. I also love that you can go there with mates or a family - all seem welcome. Friendly and efficient service, and the kitchen area looked as clean as a whistle.

Visited this amazing place last week and WOW was I impressed! Not only was the food melt-in-your-mouth delicious but the owner and his staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Thanks for an awesome night out. We will definitely be coming back!

Hi guys sorry to give you a negative review, but I bought a brisket burger from you as takeaway. Was so looking forward to it, expecting the meat to be soft and tender, melt in your mouth. Sadly the experience was the opposite. I had to chew the meat to death to get through it. Not what I have come to love about brisket. Hope I was the exception to the rule. But was a bad first experience for me.

Nice food shame about the service. Staff was rude and acted very arrogant. Left without eating after being told place was booked out but there was seats outside. When I asked if they could turn the heater I was greeted with “its flat out I’ll get there when I can”. There was 10 people in the restaurant and most had food.

You know you've got some good ribs when the meat just falls off the bone. Awesome food (pork ribs and brisket where consumed) and great service. Oh, and the place just smells freakin' amazing when you walk in.

One of the BEST Bar-B-Q I've found in Sydney.. Brisket made me moist. Beef ribs made me salivate. Pork rib made me squeal. Sweet sweet... Great beer on tap. Great music playin. Great staff. Very accommodating to my waistline... See y'all again real soon

The place smelled great. It looked really good too! When my girlfriend stopped taking photos and I got to taste it, it was melt in your mouth good. Def going back to try more of the menu. Hell yeah!

It's a terrible restaurant. We were served after 30 mins with disappointing food. portions are way less and fries were uncooked and oily. They forgot to bring ordered and paid drinks. It was meant to be a celebration dinner for us but we left this place with disappointment and hole in the pocket. Manager could see our issues but not once paid attention. on top of everything the table we were sitting had water dripping on us from the mechanical services duct pipes above. I wish to give zero points but that's not the option here. please do not waste your time and money.

Terrible service ordered two BBQ bowls and the Mac and cheese croquettes. The BBQ bowls both didn't come with sauces BBQ and ranch, although listed on the receipt order. I called the store and they said if its not in the bag its their mistake. I should call "deliveroo" to send a driver to them to bring the missing sauces.

Terrible service first time ordering from them and was hyped to try it they didn't offer any help or see what we can do or discount. Most of the food was cold highlight was probably Mac & cheese croquettes and fries.

Some of the brisket was tough but most was juicy and the pork belly was melt-in-the-mouth amazing - some of the best I've ever had. The quantity might have been a bit small for $40 (and only basic sides like salad are included in the platter) but we split the $40 platter between two people no problem. I'm marking them down though for making me press buttons on the credit card machine to indicate if I wanted to tip. It's bad enough to harass customers for tips but making them press buttons when doing a contactless payment is just a huge middle finger.

I regret not taking pics of our meal to post right next to the ones advertised on their Facebook or menu. We were very excited to taste the juicy brisket advertised online, instead received a thin and very dryed flavorless meat, the serving are so small for everything including very inexpensive items such as chips, pickles and slaw, our 2 servings of slaw were 3/4 full or less and loosely packed. Receiving a large platter with 40% of space empty and thin slices of meat spread out was visually disappointing. from 5 meats we sampled the pull pork was nice and the sausages were ok. Although, the platter pictured in the wall menu shows 3 we only got served 2, pork belly wasnt cook properly the fat was chunky and the meat was dry, chicken wasn't crispy a bit tasteless, we didn't get jalapeños mentioned as part of the platter, loaded chips were just lightly sprinkled with topings, with great disappointment we all agreed there was no value for money and a lot of false advertising in the video that brought us here so decided to leave without having a proper meal. The birthday boy apologised to everyone as it was his idea to come here, this is not the outcome you want when celebrating someones birthday.

Over price and cold meat not flavour, staff are not friendly and professional, very disappointed because we saw this restaurant on YouTube and wanted to try for a while
But so disappointed, the services is not professional, food is tasteless and cold, will never go back again

We came here last night and it was clear they were struggling. Even though we had reservations we still had to wait because the owner / guy in the kitchen could not work out that the people seated at our table needed to be advised that it was time to move on. Also had to go to the counter looking for our drinks.
Food was ok but overpriced

Interesting concept of combining sous vide with smoking. End results are abit mixed when compared to traditional smoke only.

Works really well on beef short ribs, where texture is definitely more tender. Flavour is less pronounced but both the sous vide and bark from smoking work to seal in the juices of the meat. Fat completely renders inside and meat is supple and slightly gelatinous.

Brisket here is super weak. Smoke ring is thin and pale pink, meat itself has barely any flavour when compared to a well smoked brisket. Texture during my visit was also poor, flakey and dry suggesting it was quite overcooked. Had to douse it in sauce to eat it. Perhaps it might be better had they tweaked the ratio of sous vide to smoking to allow it some more time in the smoker.

Pork belly was strong, super juicy and tender. Pork ribs also perfectly cooked, not falling off bone but really really tender, just the way it should be.

Decent selection of meats all round apart from the disappointing brisket. Wish meat could just be purchased per 100g like other BBQ places, as sides here are very standard. Fries are super crunchy but apart from that it's all mediocre. I feel like with the current menu forcing people to get plates in order to sample meats, it will not be sustainable and will probably reduce the chance of repeat customers.

Food is amazing. We ordered the brisket burger and the pulled pork. Note that they stop serving food prior to 9pm - best to get there around or just after 8pm at the latest. Customer service lacking in a number of ways but think we went there at the tail end of a busy night. Will be back!

Smokey Sues, tucked into Neutral Bay, this place is simply awesome. Smoked meats done well. The 'Ribby McRibb Face' falls off the bone with meat packed with flavour. Really enjoy their pickled onion too, perfect to cleanse the palate after getting stuck into their meats.

Knew this place from a friend who sent me a video about this place on whatsapp. Then today we managed to try. I ordered one of the signature menu here which was Ribby McRibface ($28) and a coke. And hubby ordered Big Bertha ($25) plus combo fries&coke ($6). Our burgers were huge and got plenty beef on it. My McRibface burger was good, the rib was juicy, tender and fall-off the bone and not too fatty, the downside only it lack of seasoning (regarding my palate, everyone is different it’s my opinion). My hubby’s burger consist of 3 kind of meats, he said also good but only a bit salty (he cant stand for salt). I gave 4 stars cause the guys behind the kitchen were friendly and also they gave me free fries (see above i didnt order fries nor combo). Price wise compare with its portion.

As a mostly veggie eater I just ate my monthly meat quota in one sitting however it was certainly worth it. The sausage and slow cooked beef rib were my favs. The rib had pastrami vibes with the same salty pepper seasoning. Mac and cheese bombs dipped in ranch - so good. U know meat is good when it doesn’t need any salt or sauce! The guys behind the counter provided excellent service and were genuinely interested if people where enjoying their meals. Big thumbs up!

Food was epic, Food so good, if you're in the North Shore and you have not been here, book it in.

Brisket is absolutely beautiful and combine that with a cold tap beer and you got a winner for sure!

Been wanting to try this out as not much places in Sydney serves American BBQ. Well it's my first time tasting American BBQ therefore I can't make a comparison but the food here is awesome. We ordered the ribs , brisket n the pulled lamb. The ribs and briskets were awesome but the lamb was a little bit dried out and don't have much flavor compare with the other two. Both side dishes that I ordered ( salsa , fries) were absolutely amazing , the salsa was so refreshing and fresh, I'd recommend u guys to try it out here. Price here isn't cheap, but it still is a good place to hang out in the weekend to have some good food after a long weeks of working

It takes a lot for me to make the trip over the Bridge. Smoky Sue’s does barbecue in a not so traditional way, sous viding the meats for a bit and then smoking so the meat is always incredibly tender and juicy but still with the delicious smoky flavour. The Double Platter ($55) comes with your choice of 3 meats and 1 side with fries, pickles and a sauce. Such value! The portions of the meats were pretty generous, we stuffed ourselves silly and had about ¼ left to take home (haha barbecue leftovers are so good tho, thank you past Suze)

Try this barbecue restaurant in neutral bay. I’m not fans of meat but I love their meat in here. Choose 4 meat to try today from pulled lamb, beef brisket , beef ribs and pork ribs. All of them are amazing. Tender, soft and juicy. I also try the Mac n Cheese bombs, it will be better if they give more cheese inside. The slaw and salsa quite okay as sides for me.

good food, overpriced, not good in service.
it is a restaurant that is great for a special event with the ladies, but the food was not very different.

So, was going to this place with high anticipation after reading so many good reviews and trying to book a few times only to find out they were booked out. Booked a table for Two for me and the missus on Valentines day night and was told all was good. Asked if they wanted to take our number and was told, no, no problem. So we get there and inquire about our booking only to be told they don't have a booking in our name sorry! That's it. No can we put you on one of these tables that are free with not reserved signs on them ( when we got there at 7pm the place was practically empty ), No can you wait until a bit later, no nothing apart from sorry see you later. Must admit I got a bit upset with all of this but getting another booking on Valentines day at that time of the night is pretty much impossible. So, still haven't tried it and looks like I never will cos' if you can't even get a booking right, what else is left to chance!

The chicken wings are really good : )
Beef ribs are good too, the meat is very tender & delicious. I also like the chips and bbq sauce.
But the pork ribs are a bit dry tho. It would be good if the ribs can be as tender as beef ribs
I think I will go again: )

This place is awesome!! Only barbecue joint I’ve had my fill without breaking the bank! I had a share platter with friends and we tried everything. All the meats were smoked well and incredibly tender. The short rib was my pick! The sides are great too - chicken wings and mac n cheese bombs were to die for. Will frequent Smoky Sues for a long time to come!

Finally a smoke house on the north side! Quality meats with simple-yet-tasty rubs and professional smoking.

Try the pulled lamb burger combo with Tater Tot Bombs! Legit the best!

Came here with a group the other night. The meats are really tasty and melt in your mouth. Definitely recommend the beef brisket and pork ribs
