Review Three Monkeys Cafe - Newcastle

Hyunchul Lee
The Three Monkeys Cafe is well known in Newcastle, and I had the opportunity to visit it twice recently. The food is good. On my first visit, I had the pancakes, the portions being quite generous. The ice cream on top with syrup and berry jam was a nice combination. I found the pancakes chewier than I would prefer, but acceptable. A small pot of syrup on the side would have been good, as I found myself running out of syrup for the pancakes on the bottom. On my second visit, I had 'the Ultimate', which is pulled pork and poached eggs on top of hash browns, drizzled with Hollandaise sauce. This was great, heavy as it sounds. The portion size was not huge, just right. The coffee is also quite good - I drink long blacks 95% of the time, and the baristas do a good job of this. So, why the 3 stars? Maybe I'm being unfair but out of the two times I've been, I didn't feel any warmth or rapport from the wait staff - almost felt like I was being a nuisance. I get that it's a busy cafe and there are other customers to serve, but.. yeah. If I'm paying almost $30 for breakfast and coffee, I expect to feel better walking out than walking in, not the other way around. 4.5 stars for food/coffee, but I think I'm being more than generous with 3 stars given the overall experience. YMMV.

Snickers Thickshakes are always the best here. Opted for the veggie burger this time as it was actually good. Plenty of goodness to fill you up. Poke bowl was also appetizing. staff friendly and a nice cosy atmosphere.

Great atmosphere, great staff and great food and drinks. Would definitely recommend going to Three Monkeys Cafe. However, the prices are kinda steep but worth the price, hence the 4 stars

Superb place for breakfast/brunch and good coffee!

We were very underwhelmed by this place. The food was mediocre at best and even the fries were quite tasteless.

Great breakfast. Good service and very nice coffee

I've eaten breakfast at alot of places in Cooks Hill and the Junction, and Three Monkeys Cafe has a brilliant easy menu, service is top notch and they don't go overboard with sauces. Plus if you like pepper as I do, they come out and put it on for you. This makes you feel special, albeit just there for breakfast. 8am is a good time to be there, before the rush of people come in

We went here for lunch today and the staff were AMAZING!! I went with my sister and my 8 month old baby. The waitress organised mashed veggies for lunch for Bub and then checked that they were ok for her to eat. I ordered the Thai Beef Salad and my sister had an Açai bowl. Both were delicious. Half way through lunch Bub reaches across and grabbed my sisters ice coffee and spilt it all over the table and floor. The staff could not have been more helpful with cleaning it up and then replaced it which was totally unexpected! Seriously could not rate this place highly enough and will def be back!!

One star for the coffee, the only good thing! Waited 20 minutes for a smoothie bowl (very liquid and with only 4 slices of banana!), and a burger. Glasses for water were dirty with lipstick. Tables were dirty with food, as we noticed they only remove dirty dishes but don't wipe the tables or chairs at all. Very noisy. Never again.

Came in for dinner and couldn't fault the food. The steak was perfect mr & lamb shoulder melted in your mouth. Highly recommend

The best coffee and food in the newcastle area with great service and friendly staff. I do a lot of traveling and I've seen a lot of wonderful places but nothing is better than getting of the plane and coming to the three monkeys to relax and enjoy the wonderful vibes.

Whether you go for breaky, an amazing shake, lunch or for dinner you will love Three Monkeys. We sampled their new gourmet dinner menu last night and were really impressed. It is well thought out and assured cooking which is utterly delicious. We will be back to sample the rest of the menu soon.

As we walked in for breakfast we were given a really friendly greeting from all the staff. The menu offered lots of choice and the staff were accommodating with a couple of slight changes and made sure they understood exactly what our son was after. The food and drinks were absolutely delicious all round with generous servings. Thanks everyone. We'll be back.

Went for brunch Sunday table of 6. Food was absolutely delicious & the staff were amazing. Thank you

Actual rating: 3.5/5
We ordered all three toasties (porky pig, Shaun lamb, grilled halloumi), and the shroom burger (veggie burger). The toasties were delicious but quite oily. Service was nice but the wait for our food to come was very long.

Good vibe. Busy and welcoming. Lots of different areas to sit. BUT avoid the nachos if you like satisfying grilled cheese on your nachos. They just pour over a cheese sauce. Wierd. Great chips

Went to 3 Monkeys for breakfast this morning, although had to wait in the queue (whilst starving) for about 15 mins it was worth every second!!!!! We ordered the Porkie Pig Toastie and Bacon French Toast, absolutely exceptional and cooked to perfection. Best coffee I've had in Newcastle as well, my partner had the Nutella long black - so so bad for you, but oh so good. On top of that, service was exceptional... Highly recommend!

Nice funky vibe. Good food and drink options. Enjoyed it here
Salad bowl was nice as was the chicken burger. Good hearty size breakfast portions too.

The food was average and expensive for what you get. Staff upstairs was a lady who took my order... She was very unfriendly. I wouldn't come back here again. There are far better brunch places along darby street.

Lovely cafe on Cooks Hill. Took a while to decide which cafe to go as there's quite a few on the same street. Tried their smoothie and wow, amazing.

3 Monkeys Cafe is located in the main strip of Newcastle and was buzzing with people. It is rated quite highly on Urbanspoon/Zomato. Currently, it's sitting at almost 4/5 on Zomato. There aren't as many other cafes to compete with one another in Newcastle compared to Sydney so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Cool spot for breakfast or brunch. Do an amazing Chai Latte.
Great staff and well priced menu too. Sit outside for people watching.
BEST FOR: Brunch or coffee

Darby Street, Cooks Hill, is within walking distance of Newcastle’s CBD and is full of interesting and quirky shops, some great street art and lots of lively restaurants and cafés. If Newcastle has a food street, then this surely is it. We dropped in for breakfast at Three Monkeys and were super impressed.

Nick Williams (below) has been running the café for 12 years and his dedication shows in the large and varied menu, the quality of the food and simple touches like the use of real leaf tea. Such a small thing and yet it makes so much difference to our enjoyment of a place...

Rad smoothies rubbish food. Always good smoothies, but after the last three meals I won't order food there again. Cold burger with waaaaayyy too much sauce to cover things up. Pasta that was also cold and half cooked. Had to leave it. Pick your game up or hire more monkeys

Nice lunch. Chose two the Monkey'fav and not disappointed at all. Flavour is just right! Starter slow cooked lamb is beautiful as well.

Bad bruschetta and waitress. I've been to 3 monkeys quite a few times in the last year solely for their pesto bruschetta. I'm talking about pesto, sundried tomato, and so much feta goodness. I was devastated to find they had changed it to merely a normal bruschetta. I tried the new one in the faith that it was good but it was just not the same. :( :( When I told the waitress that the old one was better she would not take on board my comment and shut me down at least 3 times. Will not be going there again in the near future.

We all used to go to 3 monkeys solely for their bruschetta but they have recently changed it... No where near as nice!! When we mentioned that to them they didn't want to take any feedback and told us the new bruschetta is better. It's really not

Good food, good service, can be a bit of a wait. I have been here multiple times and each time have been very happy with the quality of food (and many many drinks!). The servers are generally very helpful, and are very understanding when I take friends with special dietary requirements (no dairy, celiac disease etc.). However, irrespective of how busy the restaurant is or what I have ordered (burger or just toast), I have waited at least 20 minutes and even up to an hour for my food to arrive.

I love the service and the coffee is pretty good the only problem is the VERY inconsistent food!!! No matter how many times I order the same food it comes out differently each time in taste look and consistency. I wouldn't say give this place a miss I would say you need to expect something different each time.

Hear, see and spoke no evil.... Nice little café at Cooks Hill which is centrally located, service was excellent, food (had the bacon and egg burger [on Turkish], photo attached) and coffee was also great. Well done!

Worst brekky. Coffee was okay, but breakfast was terrible. I got the pesto-potato cake with poached eggs and other assorted items. Unfortunately the poached eggs were so overdone that they were basically hard-boiled. The potato cake is more of a croquette that does not have much crunch or flavour, and is mushy on the inside. The people at the table next to me also did not fare well and sent their egg dish back. Not worth your time.

The drinks were delightful I had the tobbo frappe it tasted refreshing.
However the meal to me was average. It was a decent feed but I didn't find it out of th ordinary.

It was alright. Pumpkin patch pizza was what I ordered, the base of the pizza was quite tough. The topping of the pizza was quite fresh and full of flavour. The white milk hot chocolate was an amazing and great during winter/ a cold night.

I've never had a bad meal here and the service is always always great. I love the Moroccan eggs and the Cookie Monster. Yummo!
