Review Talulah Bar - Newcastle

Peter L
Friendly service, fairly available seating, didn't feel crowded at all. The window seats in particular provide a lovely view. Coffee was delicious and the food was classic brunch fair with some twists. Highlight was the hotcakes which was so fluffy :)

Fantastic breakfast. A nice modern take on breakfasts. Delicious thick bacon on both breakfasts and a lovely choice of pickles and relish to flavour the dish. Easily one of the best breakfasts in Newcastle.

The presentation of the beverage and food looked amazing! The Protein Bowl was very nice, loved the Teriyaki salmon combination!

Nice breakfast spot, I had the cocoa hotcake I believe it is called. Presentation 10/10 great looking dish, not sure if it is usually made like this. Cocoa powder can be quite bitter, I felt it was maybe a bit heavy handed every other element was spot on but not enough to counter it. Maybe this is as the dish is intended, all in all still a solid breakfast.

My friends and I went to Talulah’s for my birthday. We couldn’t have picked a better place. The service and the food was outstanding. Every single staff member that we interacted with made us feel so welcome. One of my friends said her turmeric latte was the best she had ever had. I mentioned to one of the ladies how happy I was and she went straight away to tell the owner who came to thank me personally. Will definitely be making this one of my regular cafes.

Yummy food and good service! However there was too much char siu sauce on my dish and the sauce was a too salty. I personally did not like the coffee (not a coffee expert) as it had a sour aftertaste. It was super busy so I thought the service was a little rushed and they missed a side dish we ordered. Overall a nice dining experience!

My human and his family took me here for lunch - the puppy ice cream was superb (so much so I had seconds!) However reports were the hotcakes were too sweet and the char siu bacon too salty. Great service though. 3 paws out of four!

Sorry Talulah you missed the mark with your Valentine’s Day dinner this evening. Normally we are big fans of your food and wanted to support you after an awful year of covid lockdowns. The menu looked amazing too. We waited an hour for our first course and had to ask for the matched gin and tonic to go with it. Other tables come in later and got served before us and then we were still waiting for second of 5 course meal that still hadn’t arrived 2 hours in. As the night wore on other tables were left waiting. Unfortunately we left as there was no sign of our second course coming. Perhaps some disaster in the kitchen? Whoever your male waitstaff was tonight lacked any customer service too. Perhaps he’s the owner and was pulled in to help? Good luck in the future. Hopefully you’ll get back on track soon. We’ll be back for lunch but tonight it’s a 1 star review from me.

One of my top choices in Newcastle to eat and hadn't been for a while... today, best breakfast ever!! The Black Forest bacon with eggs benedict was an absolute taste sensation that includes my favourite food as a surprise addition... best green there is!!

Went to Talulah for dinner a few weeks ago with my husband & was very disappointed 😔. This used to be one of our favourite restaurants but I don’t think we will be back. It was very busy but there wasn’t one thing about the night I could say we enjoyed. Our bread came out without our wine. We ended up having to ask for the wine! Then our meal took about another hour & when I arrived it was cold & under cooked! When I was asked how the meal was going I let them know & the waitress offered to take it back but I thought it may take another hour & was hungry so declined. We were offered a free desert but it was getting late & just wanted to leave. Very disappointing indeed.

From the moment we walked in we knew we were in a winner!! It was a Saturday morning and the place was heaving!!! We were greeted promptly and asked to wait in the lounge and a table came up no long after. Service was prompt and with a smile. The breakfast was one of the absolute best I’ve had in a long time!!! Full of flavour and executed perfectly, and looking around at other tables every dish looked just as amazing! I even popped my head into the kitchen to praise them on such a fabulous meal, he was a blonde guy with tatts and he was so thankful for my feedback. Then when we paid at counter with the manager Alex and George’s was just as delightful. Taluhla is awesome and they are a well oiled machine. Love love love it!!!

I have been to Talulah's twice. The decor is lively and eclectic, great location but most importantly the food is divine. I will be back because of the food and the vibe and in spite of the service. The guy behind the bar was friendly and helpful but the young woman could not get away from our table fast enough and was unfriendly. Coffee was great.

The Nourish Bowl was the best breakfast I have eaten out for years. Gluten Free as well and so tasty

Loved the food here tonight. This is the second time I have been here and been wonderful both times! Good atmospheres with friendly staff.

Amazing food and extremely friendly and helpful service. We are visiting from Melbourne and enjoyed the experience so much we are already wanting to plan a trip back. The dishes are modern Australian tapas style and are designed for sharing, which gives you a great opportunity to try a number of different items on offer on the menu. Would highly recommend the hand rolled potato gnocchi, but from what we tried, you really can’t go wrong with any of the meals!

This was the worst service I have ever experienced in my life. They did not want to serve lunch and the attitude from 3 of them he 4 staff on was disgusting!
Talulah is great for a few reasons. I had written out a much longer review but my phone crashed and it didn't upload but here's a quick summary.

- Great for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

- Fully of Natural lift and surrounded by trees during the Day, great ambience at night. Great for a couples date or a bigger group. Music is always fitting the mood and never too loud to talk over.

- Large, seasonal menu. Always changing things up to keep things interesting. Whether you want to have your own meal or share some smaller plates there's plenty to chose from.

- Friendly, polite and attentive staff on the floor. Have spoken to a couple of the kitchen staff and they're all really passionate and proud of the food they're producing

- Only real suggestions would be to have a beer or two on tap. Beer on tap can be very different to beer from a bottle and there's plenty of local brewers that they could rotate to fit with the seasonal menu. Secondly, a few more dessert options wouldn't go astray either.
Wow! What a restaurant! Let us first start with the cocktail... usually we will have one and try another but this cocktail we couldn't put down! Delicious!
Secondly the HALOUMI TACOS! Wow just wow! We speak about these tacos to this day! Talulah Bar serves great cocktails, food and service within a chic ambiance!

Went for breakfast on Sunday with my boyfriend. The female waitress wasn't friendly and didn't even look at us when taking our order. I honestly felt very awkward and uncomfortable and believe it was due to my ethinicity as I am Asian and my boyfriend is Caucasian. Wasn't a pleasant experience, never have I ever felt that way. Food on the other hand was good.

Awesome yummy wholesome and hearty food. Food for the body and the soul. Presentation amazing, flavours great. The place to go in Newcastle, love it!

We've been for breakfast a few times. The service is usually pretty good, and was exceptional today, as we're our meals. Coffee was lovely as was the turmeric latte.

Lovely airy cafe with warm, friendly, genuine service, delicious food and great coffee. Perfect spot for a quiet coffee, or lunch/catchup with family or friends. Would definitely go back :)

Fantastic service and delicious food. Quiet and cozy restaurant environment. Great selection of wine by the glass. Getting to be a little expensive, but still worth it.

Great date destination in Newcastle! My husband and I shared a bottle of red a great combo of tapas.. The pulled lamb and eggplant salad was fantastic and sides of maple pumpkin and garlic roasted potatoes! Very yummy!

Food was awesome.. Portions were huge, tasty and reasonably priced. Service was good, very friendly wait staff, food was a little slow but coffee and tea was great so we didn't mind the wait so much.

Omg this place is awesome. Service amazing, accommodating for a over zealous toddler and coffee to die for. Reasonably priced food too. Felt like a little bit of Melbourne in Newcastle. Cant wait to come back on out next trip to Newcastle.

The food here is AMAZING!!!! Coffee and service is also great! Highly recommend the "Roasted mushroom" in lunch menu. So fresh and delicious!! Best cafe lunch I had ever had in the last couple of years. Maybe we will just come back to Newcastle just for this cafe;-)
Awesome food - surprisingly good! We had tapas for entree then ordered mains. Can vouch for the salmon & duck. Decent size dishes. Little wait. Great service & ambiance. Definitely one to go out of your way for.

Incredible. This is what Cafes should be like! Great food great coffee. Even though super busy the food and coffee came out quickly and the staff were friendly and efficient. One of the 3 floor staff picked up that I was keen on extra rosti (over heard me mention it) and asked if he could get me some, as the kitchen were pretty quick at getting them out! It's the little things that make a cafe great. Well done Talulah Bar! I wish I was a local!
YumYum
Fantastic cafe. I came here with a group for breakfast. The menu is extensive, creative and the food is superb. There are two sections to the restaurant - perfect for very laid back get togethers and more formal experience.

Wouldn't bother going back. My dining experience at this cafe was so poor that I would not consider going back again. We arrived at the restaurant just before 12 noon on Saturday. Our coffee order was taken straight away and the coffee came promptly. The coffee was fairly average; milk was ok but coffee beans tasted cheap and yet the price of the coffee on the menu was quite expensive. This would not have mattered if everything else had been good but it wasn't. After waiting for around 20 minutes to have our food order taken, I requested to order from the waitress. However, I was told that there was a queue, and that I would have to wait until other people who had arrived before me had ordered. Once we had finally ordered the food took well over an hour to come out. At around the 55 minute mark, I asked the waitress to find out what had happened to our food and informed her about how long we had been waiting. We were told that our food was not too far away and that the chef was happy to remove the coffees from our bill. Our food did not arrive until 1:20pm, nearly 1 1/2 hours after we had initially arrived at the restaurant. I ordered the Cambodian beef salad and my partner ordered the chicken burger will hand cut chips. The elements of my beef salad that were meant to be hot were almost cold and it tasted more Thai than Cambodian. The flavours, however, were still nice. My partner's burger was good, although the chicken was a bit dry. The chips were soggy and it was obvious that the cause of this was that the oil in which they were fried had not been hot enough. Overall, I was so annoyed at how long my food had taken that I could not really enjoy my meal. Although we received a friendly apology from a waitress from another section who had come to check on us, our original waitress did not apologise and appeared cold in her manner.

Breakfast there is just a tasty overpriced snack. We ordered the breakfast bruschetta ($15.50) and zucchini fritters ($19.50). They were tasty but portion size beyond disappointing for the price. The breakfast bruschetta was just a thin single slice of bread, slither of avocado and one tomato! We waited way too long for such tiny and simple meals. Now we're off to get a second breakfast because that didn't cut it.

Delicious food, great attentive staff....we asked how many tapas we would need and were advised two would be a good start and we could always order more...turns out dip and bread, pork meatballs and the best tasting mushrooms with sweet potato stuffing I've ever had....were enough

Food and wait staff are delightful. Staff knowledgable and wine list excellent choices.

Great Food, Fantastic Service. We just keep coming back, can't remember ever having a meal here that was anything but quality. Service to match as well.
LakeMacquarie Diner
Disappointing!. We were encouraged to order the banquet as we were a group of 15 people.
The dishes that came out seemed to be aimed at feeding a large group of people as cheaply as possible, rather than giving a tasty satisfying meal. There was a braised beef dish which was more a pureed beef. The serving was very small & my partner & I didn't like the taste at all! There was also a squid dish which was very salty & the batter was a bit mushy...not nice! Most of us left that as well! Not sure about other members in our group, but my partner & I were not offered any Sangria. Desert & coffee were not included in the price of the banquet, so that had to be ordered separately. All in all, we came away disappointed & unsatisfied.
We had to have a snack when we got back home as we were still hungry

Waited nearly an hour for meals.. The food was delicious, but we waited nearly an hour for our meals. After 40 minutes we flagged down a waitress to ask about our meals, they had not been to our table since we ordered. After another 10 minutes we checked again. The wait staff were not in the slightest bit apologetic, and never asked asked if we would be interested in another drink (which we had finished before we even ordered our meals). It was a Sunday lunch time. There were quite a few tables but it was not ridiculously busy.

The meals were all delicious. It was just a shame about the service and the lack on communication.

Wow!! Where have you been? This place is so amazing. A serious true little gem. If you're a fan of great good & service you must visit this place!! We ordered a few dishes from the tapas/smaller tasting plate and so glad we did. Each dish was mouthwatering, where each bite left a huge blast of flavour. The beef cheeks and pork belly/scallops were absolutely devine, the duck ravioli was deelishious and how can you pass on the chocolate plate...that was scrumptious. The atmosphere, meals and service was very memorable. Thanks Daniel for the fantastic service.

Bring your appetite.... Great café at The Junction, really friendly and helpful staff, good coffee and if you order the bacon + egg roll w double egg on toasted turkish, melted cheese + bbq sauce... make sure you have lots of room, as it is as large as it is tasty!
Bill
Great friendly service and good breakfast and coffee.
Never eaten at any other times.
I give it 3 1/2 out of 5 poached eggs

The banquet is perfect for a large group booking. I absolutely loved the cous cous & the house made sangria is fabulous!

Pleasant Atmosphere, Enjoyable Meal. I attended Talulah's Bar in September 2012, and as a first timer to the established was pleasantly surprised. The wait staff were attentive, the meals (I had the bruschetta for entree, gnocchi for mains and banana tart for desert, and my friend the duck for main) were all fresh and tasty. There was a relaxing ambience to the restaurant with a scattering of fairlights, candelabras and background music set a lovely scene.
The general decor is modern but has a unique twist that makes it more than the normal boring decor seen in other trendy restaurants.
The over all price for our meal which as mentioned included 1 entree, 2 mains, 2 deserts and 3 glasses of wine came to $122 - I think thats pretty reasonable.
If I had to make a complaint it would be this - I had two wines (A Verdhello fermented in a vanilla oak (name escapes me), and a Reisling (again name escapes me)) both by the glass, and of which both were horrible. So perhaps a rethink to the wine list is in order - but that said, it is all personal choice and palate too.

So Overall - a very very enjoyable evening. Thanks Guys!

Very odd service but delicious food. Strangely abrupt FoH staff compensated for by delicious coffee, great breakfast. Very accommodating of a large group.

Enjoyed my breakfast here. Great service, bright and airy! Great way to wake up!

We had an amazing selection of share plates for an entree. I had the duck breast for a main and my partner had the 7 hour slow cooked lamb shoulder. The food was excellent. Looking forward to going back!
