Newly renovated we popped in for an impromptu lunch and it was really excellent. The kitchen was flat out and we had to wait, but the staff were really attentive and friendly. The Reno is excellent and every detail has been thought of. There’s plenty of seating with tables for large groups and couples. Lots of natural lighting with large windows. Is definitely worth a visit.

Food was a great improvement from the last time I had been there before the renovations, the menu was fresh, not over complicated and offered a selection to suit all tastebuds. Our meals were delivered in an extremely acceptable time with very friendly and polite service. The decor was inviting and welcoming and atmosphere tolerable for a pub scene. There are some extremely comfortable seating settings but could do with more as opposed to the hard timber bench seats. I rate the service 5/5 The food 4 and 3/4 out of 5 The seating 4/5 Overall a quality dining out experience and will be back and not hesitate to recommend to others. Thumbs up to the Owners

Ok my booking didn't get off to a great start..but the staff at the Mary Ellen nailed it tonight...We were a table of 9 with 6 adults, 8 year old and 2 bubs... We had a wine spill by a 9 month old, staff were so accommodating. Our food was amazing. Everyone was super happy and we will be back.

We went to Newcastle for my husband's brother funeral and stayed just up the road from the Mary Ellen Hitel. What a pleasant surprise - great food (not many people can cook blue steak so well), friendly, efficient staff. We ate here twice in 5 days.

Booked a table for 6 for a birthday lunch and was not disappointed. Food and service was great even though the restaurant was very busy. We will be back.
