Review Mary Ellen Hotel - Newcastle

Sharon Free
Newly renovated we popped in for an impromptu lunch and it was really excellent. The kitchen was flat out and we had to wait, but the staff were really attentive and friendly. The Reno is excellent and every detail has been thought of. There’s plenty of seating with tables for large groups and couples. Lots of natural lighting with large windows. Is definitely worth a visit.

Food was a great improvement from the last time I had been there before the renovations, the menu was fresh, not over complicated and offered a selection to suit all tastebuds. Our meals were delivered in an extremely acceptable time with very friendly and polite service. The decor was inviting and welcoming and atmosphere tolerable for a pub scene. There are some extremely comfortable seating settings but could do with more as opposed to the hard timber bench seats. I rate the service 5/5 The food 4 and 3/4 out of 5 The seating 4/5 Overall a quality dining out experience and will be back and not hesitate to recommend to others. Thumbs up to the Owners

Ok my booking didn't get off to a great start..but the staff at the Mary Ellen nailed it tonight...We were a table of 9 with 6 adults, 8 year old and 2 bubs... We had a wine spill by a 9 month old, staff were so accommodating. Our food was amazing. Everyone was super happy and we will be back.

Fist time I have been back here since they have done the place up, looks lovely inside, great job. The gentleman that took my order and the Chefs were the only people working in the place, the other 4 staff members behind the bar that were in the bar area were just standing in the bar area talk amongst themselves. The bar area only had 2 people in that area so the bar were not busy. I had to go and ask for a paper towel to wipe my table over as it had mess on the table. Wouldn't you think that the 4 staff members standing behind the bar talking amongst themselves, standing around doing nothing, could of at least cleared tables and wiped down tables especially with all the cold and flu germs going around and covid. I would not like to pay anyone to stand behind a bar and do nothing other than chat to other staff members about gossip. Other that that the meal was great. 3 stars from me.

We went to Newcastle for my husband's brother funeral and stayed just up the road from the Mary Ellen Hitel. What a pleasant surprise - great food (not many people can cook blue steak so well), friendly, efficient staff. We ate here twice in 5 days.

$51.50 for a steak are the joking. The chop house is $59 for. A 600 gram steak. This place wants to charge 51.50 for a 259 gram are they joking. It’s a pub not a steak house yes granted it tasted ok but for that price is rather starve and so would the rest of the people I was with what an absolute disgrace to pubs $51 for a steak that was average red wine jus was horrible at best got to the price way better feed

Booked a table for 6 for a birthday lunch and was not disappointed. Food and service was great even though the restaurant was very busy. We will be back.
