Review Chat Chai - Newcastle

Really nice Thai restaurant. Quite a westernised menu, but if you've only had Thai food in Australia or a western country you won't notice that much. Lovely to sit on the balcony on a summer's evening. Service very friendly and food delivered promptly. Very tasty too and reasonably priced. The red curry is particularly good. We enjoyed it here and will come back.

Not so good experience. Thai beef salad soaked in fish sauce, salt and sugar. Hardly a salad leaf to be found. Sate and fried rice was very bland . Previous visits ok, nice location!

Fantastic food with reasonable price, especially love their panang curry and satay chicken. Friendly staffs and nice environment on the balcony.

Probably the worst Thai I have ever had. Both the entree and mains where tasteless, almost like the forgot some of the ingredients!! Not sure how this place has 4.5 stars!!!

The food & service was exceptional! Love the spring rolls, best so far amongst all the Asian restaurants in Newcastle. The salt & pepper was generous in portion for 4 of us and the black rice with coconut cream dessert was to die for! Will definitely visit again. Keep it up Xang! Doing a great job!

Excellent food that was fresh, fast and delicious. The $10.90 lunch special was really good value for what you get and the customer service was on point.

Experience:
Poor service, just happened to walk into this resturant during Easter holiday. Was really disappointed with the service they had to offer. We were greeted by a staff who offered us a table near the corner of the balcony. I had to go and order my food at the counter as they took more than 20 mins to come to our table. On top of that the food came 1:30 hrs after we place the order. There was some mixup as our food went to next table. Overall the experience was poor.

Improvement:
My suggestion would be to organise a table numbers so that such mistakes wouldn't happen in the future.

Great location up on the balcony. I asked the waiter to recommend a dish, which was red duck curry and coconut rice. It was AMAZING! Generous portion, I couldn't eat it all so took the rest home. Service was a little slow, but who cares when such amazing food is being served!

Happy Thai. Lovely and friendly service. Meals came quickly and while not extraordiny, were very nice. Easy place to eat if you are in the Derby St area.

The Best Thai in Newcastle. Chat Chai is the best Thai in Newcastle. The owner Lucy is so friendly and makes you feel so welcome and goes out of her way to please every time. The food is fresh, delish and so so cheap & its lovely upstairs out on the balcony. So if you're looking for Thai, go no further than Chat Chai Thai in Darby St.

Arguably the best Thai in Newcastle, and definitely the best on Darby St. Food is delicious and fresh, reasonably priced, quick for both takeaway and dine-in, and staff provide great, friendly service. I'm a regular!

Try Elsewhere. This was once my favourite Thai in Newcastle, I have been here many times since it opened. Unfortunately over the last few times the food is not quite the same and my once favourite meal, sizzling seafood plate tastes really weird. The peppercorns which you could once eat strait from the stem are no longer palatable and the last few times I have been here I haven't been that well the next day.

Love it - lots of fresh veggies!. My favourite thai in Newcastle. Is not drowning in oil but light and full of crisp, healthy veggies. Lovely staff. We drive half an hour each way to eat in or takeaway as nothing closer compares!

Terrible. Waited about one hour and twenty minutes and got no food. I left after that. Not recommended.

Great Newcastle Thai. Not sure what the other reviewers are on about with Chat Thai... never heard of it. Chat Chai has been an upstairs thai restaurant on the famous eat-street of Newcastle East Darby St for many years. Although not always called Chat Chai. Formerly called Wet Clay and I know it was owned by the people that run The Grain thai restaurant over on Beaumont St Hamilton.

Although the name may have changed it is still the same lovely location and it is a bit more quiet so if you are after something a bit more intimate where you can hold conversation then choose this one. Sitting out on the balcony overlooking the street taking in the delicious food is one of my favorite parts of dining out at Newcastle.

Again the management and signage may have changed but to my untrained eye the menu has remained pretty unchanged with the usual thai selections and prepared plentifully and promptly.

Prices ranged from $12-20 per meal.

Delicious food. Well placed. Good Service.. Have eaten here a number of times, both dine in and takeaway. Always delicious. Fast service. Friendly.

Reliably excellent thai! Definitely above average, (which for thai equates to awesome). I always take guests visiting Newcastle here because it's a pleasant setting up on the balcony, & everything I've tried here has been delicious.

I don't even care that they are blatantly coasting off an already successful Thai restaurant chain, Chat Thai. The food at this place is always delicious and fairly priced, with generous portions and efficient staff.

To be honest we wondered where we were heading when we walked up some stairs to this place....but wow we loved it! The service was über friendly and the food even outweighed that. Reasonably priced which is of course always lovely!
Will definitely come again

We entered this restaurant thinking it was part of the famous "Chat Thai" group of restaurants, they have even copied part of the logo the only difference I pointed out to the owner was Chat Thai always full, and it seems the copy cat this day was totally empty. How low to copy a successful restaurant group thinking this will make you rich, you can't beat Amy's Chat Thai after 30 years of wonderful food in Sydney. Finally an interesting statement from the manager of the Chat Chai Thai, she said that in Australia if you just slightly change another restaurants name and logo slightly that is approved in Australian law really ! , Mc Donalds would be delighted to hear that ! I wonder what the hard working owners of Chat Thai (Sydney Thai Town) ( Coogee) (Town Hall) ( Manly ) ( Westfield Pitt Street ) think of this logic especially as the copied logo is the same colour and 90 % of the design as the the real Chat Thai.

Chat Chai has the best Thai on Darby Street and an unique lineup of dishes. My favourites are the Hor Mok Pla (spelling??) and Crying Tiger.
