Review Odd Spot Cafe - Newport

Amy Elizabeth
Friendly staff, nice food, would definitely go there again. Would have liked a few more gf options, and maybe some more dairy free options. The coffee was nice. The food was tasty. A small pet peeve, please don’t take my plate when my friend is still eating. They weren’t far off done. Other than that small thing, the staff were quite friendly and let us sit there for way too long chatting after we had finished. I probably would have ordered something else if they had asked but nice to be left be.

Cute little cafe on a Newport street corner. They do delicious smooth coffee, and I also had a lovely avocado & feta breakfast. The sourdough was crispy, but not dry or tough. Generous amount of avocado, and the broadbeans, chilli and balsamic were a nice touch.

Local favourite, great menu and decent portions, I tried the quinoa salad with home made falafel and it was really good, highly recommend it . Gridlock coffee is on the menu and well prepared by staff!

Helpful and friendly staff in this quaint corner-neighbourhood coffee shop. Terrific Chai and yummy muffins. A great selection of lunch food.

I like the shop decoration which has a nostalgic British feelings and the spacious indoor and outdoor sittings. But I am not impressed at all with their pancakes on my visit. My sister who lives nearby and has come a few time said the food was not great.

I honestly can't fault this place: solid, unpretentious, good value, every detail delicious. We lunched during our Scienceworks visit. The gf toast is soft delicious and big sliced buckwheat chia, and my eggs benny were flawless - avo on the toast was unexpected and great! Excellent coffee and understated smooth service. Everyone was happy with their order - the mushroom & haloumi burger with super crispy onion rings was a huge hit. Am kinda sad I'm never in the area! And I'm from Brunswick! Trust me you won't be disappointed here.

Great coffee. The Bacon and egg roll was on point. Crispy Bacon, 2 eggs, housemade relish. Highly recommend this Cafe

The macrobiotic bowl is the best. They cater for vegans and the staff are attentive and welcoming. Love it!

I second every great comment I read. I have come many times in the last 2 years to always find great food, coffee (and god knows I am usually disappointed - many "barristas" around struggle with soy), atmosphere, decor, staff... including the ever smiling lovely French waitress ;)

The Best in the West. Can't help the urge to go there. Food great, pleasant, caring and I am very grateful.

Love the friendly staff and delicious food. The specials menu changes regularly to surprise and delight. Best coffee in the area- hands down!

I've been visiting Odd Spot for 7 years. It never disappoints. The staff are friendly and attentive, the food is always fresh and delicious and I love the weekly specials board.
Clare Knight
Warm grain salad was the best breakfast I've had in a long time! Delicious coffee too
Aaron D'Altera
The staff are so friendly and nice Plus the coffee is good and the Greasey egg and Bacon toastie is the best
Jennifer Bosgra
Always great service, fresh food and smooth coffee. Affordable enough to visit regularly. And special enough to impress.

Had lunch here. Food was delicious and coffee was sensational. Highly recommended :)

Loved it! Went last Saturday for the first time and what a fabulous menu! Looking forward to trying a lunch meal!

I don’t understand how this place doesn’t have better reviews. This place has a lot of gluten free, vegetarian and healthy options on their menu (unlike some other local cafes). We’ve always had great service there and the coffee has been delicious. I always get the fritters, I just can’t get past them. They also have a fridge full of delicious and healthy takeaway options.

Small cafe in Newport, there are only couple cafes on the street, so no competitor to them unless I go a bit further, to the Main or Hall Street. I had a coffee and muffin only, the menu isn't that exciting. The muffin was ok, I don't fuzz about it. The staff is friendly.

First visit to the Odd Spot. Had the squashed avo & feta, which was really yummy. Having a homemade hash always impresses me. Was surprised to be charged for the addition of mushrooms though when I choose the vegetarian option without the bacon. Other than that, coffee was good and service was excellent.

Babycino .... for moi?<br/><br/>Sunday afternoon, near closing time, just pass 15:00, lots of kids inside the cafe and I ordered my take-away small Latte $3.50, that's good.<br/><br/>So I went away happy, drive on ..... sipping while driving and this Latte tasted very milky, let's stop and give it a stir ...... still milky like a tuned up Babycino, could it be my baby face look that the young Barista given me a Babycino coffee, surely those kids don't do take-away that size :-)<br/><br/>Very odd .... but there's always a first time for everything, life still goes on, I trust that their food are much better so I can upgrade this rating. Went in Sunday Morning for a quick coffee and some Breakfast, after waiting 20 minutes for warm coffee waited a further 20 minutes for scrambled eggs which was again just warm and the toast was soggy from the liquid seeping from it.<br/>I noticed the average waiting time for a coffee was 20 mins, even for takeaway, simply not good enough

Staff and service are always pleasant! I do find the food very hit-and-miss which is disappointing considering what you are paying. I use to send my food back when I was unhappy, however now I just deal with it (stale bread, sandwich full of onion, old sour ham, uncooked toastie). My honest opinion is 70% of the time they have delicious food however it's disappointing having the other 30% on wasted food and money. There's such potential for a great rating if there was more attention to detail in every order.

I dashed in here for a quick lunch on my way to a meeting. The service was fantastic. The cafe was small and homely w a wooden log fire. Perfect for a cold wet winters day. I just wished I could have stayed longer. <br/><br/>Today I had a chicken and salad sandwich and whilst not cheap at almost $11 it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten in tooo long haha<br/><br/>Using sourdough bread w sundried tomatoes, beetroot, cucumber, lettuce, cheese, carrot and thinly sliced chicken! Altogether perfect!! <br/><br/>Thank you I'm definitely coming back here lol

Always inviting from the get go. Warm and cosy with great coffee. Excellent food and super quick for take away coffee. Although very popular I somehow manage a seat every time .

Bad spot<br/><br/>I never like complaining<br/>But that's all that is remaining<br/>The waitress wasn't rude<br/>But we waited for our food<br/>For roughly half an hour<br/>Were they milling flour?<br/>My toastie wasn't toasted<br/>Did their grill just go unnoticed?<br/>I won't be back<br/>Alas, alack<br/>No avo meant the blat was flat<br/>My friend had ordered hollandaise<br/>I asked her, "why the dour face?"<br/>This sauce has such a sour taste<br/>The vinegar is on a power craze <br/>This is not to say<br/>We didn't pay<br/>I hate complaints<br/>But what a waste <br/>Of tasty bacon<br/>Perhaps I was sorely mistaken<br/>For attending here on a recommendation

Ordered the farmhouse brekky, overall the meal was great. Portion was just right, not overly large. Most of the elements was slightly above average in taste, but what stood out surprisingly was the potato hash. The taste and texture was spot on, mix of the square potatoes you get with a regular hash but with a mix of mash and crispy coating. The hollandaise was well balanced, but there wasn't enough of it.
Franpower
Used to love this place - but finding the service has decreased every visit, with rude, short and abrupt waitress, potentially the owner?!? The wait times for meals has increased and one time took almost an hour for two people. I would over look the wait if the staff were polite and attended to you. Would actually order more.

Mmmmmm loved the flavoursome and comprehensive AM breakfast salad, which comprised a myriad of ingredients including quinoa, pumpkin, bacon, spinach, avocado, feta, grilled tomato, and pumpkin seeds. Coffee was good but too strong for my tastes.
Katrina Andrew
Love this place. Cosy, friendly and wholesome real food. They take great care with my food as a celiac and I'm so grateful. Green smoothie my favourite!
Electra
Delicious! AM bowl is definitely a win. And coffee was great too. Service was also super fast! Not sure if we came a little too early/maybe because it was a weekday, but it was a quiet day! Always nice to go into a cafe that isn't surrounded by lots of people
Clare
The food was great and staff were very accommodating as we had limited time for lunch. Even got one of the fresh cakes to take home afterwards! Will be back :)
Not My Bread And Butter
What struck me first about the Odd Spot cafe was the warm, calm but vibrant atmosphere created in a shop on a busy stretch of Williamstown Road – hence the namesake.  I was surprised to find astroturf as a feature wall, an enclosed fireplace and a bright splash of yellow on the coffee machine.  I guess there was something about this location that screamed boring old-fashioned coffee shop.  Whilst the service provided by the waitresses here was old-fashioned (they were super attentive, friendly and checked multiple times what we thought of the food before finding out I was a food blogger), the Odd Spot is certainly not boring.
Mel2018
Nice little cafe with decent coffee and the best super salad sandwich you'll find. On a busy road with outside seating, but inside is pleasant.
Trish Gardiner
The Odd Spot came highly recommended by a friend, so at the first opportunity (the next day) I thought I would give it a go. She did not exaggerate. It's small and cosy which is great because big places just get so noisy. The staff were friendly and on the ball. Now the food and coffee....I consider to be a coffee 'connoisseur" and I have no issue returning a bad coffee. In this case the coffee was good, really really good. I ordered the Bircher and a piece of fruit toast with jam (I had just been for a run and I was hungry) the Bircher came out in the fancy jar full to the brim, topped with a strawberry, pear slices and lots of grated apple, it looked really pretty and appetising. The toast was presented on a board with a tiny Alice in Wonderland size jar with jam and a knob of butter on the side. At first I thought how am I going to put my spoon in the Bircher jar without spilling it, once I worked it out and put a spoonful into my mouth I thought OMG this is so yummy. I'm not really sure what was in it but it was delicious, fruity, nutty, crunchy and fresh with all the grated apple. I highly recommend it. The toast was definitely real not 'airy' and tasteless. It was dense and full of flavour. I was there with 3 others and we all got our meals at the same time.....It amazers me that so many cafes have trouble getting that right. To conclude I have decided to try every single item on the menu over the next whatever months and write about them all. If you're looking for a great place for brekky The Odd Spot is your place.

Absolutely appalling customer service. I walked in with a dislocated knee to sit down without anyone attending to the door. I then proceeded to look around for staff but to no avail. Moments later two ladies walked through the door and take a seat and one of the staff members walks over with some glasses of water and menus. She then walks over to our table as we grabbed a menu ourself.. We received no apology and the lady was quite unfriendly so we decided to leave. Very disappointing as I used to like this cafe.
Sherisse.c
Good was lovely but as per previous reviews, poor customer service. Perhaps it was because I came in with a 2-year old who had a bit of a tantrum, but I had a lady serve us who really didn't seem like she wanted to!! The same lady was absolutely warm and accomodating to the couple sitting next to us, so it was obvious she directed her rudeness to us.<br/><br/>Had child-friendly facilities but not child friendly with the exception of one staff member of the 3 who served us. <br/><br/>Food was good (long wait) but the experience was not.
Ash Littlehales
Food is ok....... service is very poor...... at outside for ten min waiting for menus, cafe not busy at all..... went inside to ask and got some lady with a lot of attitude...... went into pay not even a thanks....... service is missing

Beautiful Food. What a delightful lunch. I had the special 'Chicken Burger' which was delicious, for such a large burger it was light but flavoursome.<br/>Not only is the food amazing but so is the service.

Very disappointed... - un.... Very disappointed...<br/><br/>- unhappy with the smoothie; was chunky and hard to stomach. I've had other green smoothies before with similar ingredients and have all been fine<br/>- waitress forgot our eggs with our avo on toast which was a let down, the bread was also very small and more ideal for a child <br/>- quite expensive for what it was<br/>- after waitress acknowledged that I didn't like the smoothie she provided no compensation or offered to make it better <br/>- after walking out we noticed that we had been charged for the eggs which we never even got <br/><br/>Thoroughly unhappy with the experience and wish that this feedback will be taken on board. <br/><br/>Ps the hats aren't working

Been a regular for the past 8 years and will keep coming back. New and fresh changes made and they are great love the museli bars, protein balls and purchased the beetroot jam in a word yummy

Disappointed. Served our two meals separately<br/>Limpy lettuce<br/>Over priced<br/>A very unhappy waitress<br/>Disappointing when the menu and venue look so good!

A real gem.. This is our favourite cafe and we try to get here at least every couple of weeks. The food is amazing and the staff, under the leadership of Sarah, are wonderful. My partner is particularly fond of the amazing blueberry pancakes with cinnamon butter but I like to try all the new and interesting food combinations Sarah creates. We have been going here for over 5 years and I have never had a meal that wasn't scrumptious or coffee that wasn't perfect. This place is a real gem!
Luvmyfood
Apalling!. This place has slipped further down the slopes of bad quality.<br/>Recently visited for a change of pace and ordered chicpea salad. <br/>Nothing was fresh. No flavours.<br/>Boiled vegetable which were old, salad and goats cheese, oh and poor quality, stale tasting chick peas.<br/>how dissapointing. I did express my dissapointment but I put this blog in hope that whomever runs this place will wake up and take some pride in what you're serving.<br/>In such a prime location and with the competition for freshness compared to places like Nosh and restaurants in Newport and Seddon, how can you even be surviving.<br/>I find it insulting that businesses can serve up such dishes and expect people to come back. I aint!
Foodanddrink
Yes. Nice strong coffee & friendly staff

Nothing I would recommend about this place, slow lazy service, had to call someone over to place order then waited over half an hour for food to arrive which was burnt. Were very few other customers so not sure why was so bad
Amelia Grace
Went here for brunch and everything was absolutely b-e-autiful !!! <br/>The menu had so menu yummy choices I had a hard time deciding but ended up going for the bagel which was perfection ! The coffee was also spot on and the staff incredibly warming and pleasant.

Great salad sandwich. Really enjoyed my lunch here. Cute little cafe. Good and friendly service. Coffee is good. Price reasonable.

Great Food. We enjoyed our brekky at the Odd Spot Cafe. The food was really great. The smoothies fabulous. We will be back again for sure.

My wife and I have been regular customers (at least 1 visit a week) for the past year. Whilst the food and drink has been consistently very good, the service has been average at best and it seems to be getting worse! On our latest visit after ordering we had waited for 35-40mins and had received no further service since our order was taken. As a result we paid for our drinks (which we did receive after an initial wait) and left. We are both highly dissapointed with this Cafe as the food is great (when you actually receive it...) But the poor service is really letting it down. The owners and staff really need to lift there game and understand that service does not end at the ordering part!

New management, delicious new menu, friendly and fast service. Love being a local with these spoils nearby!
Ann
Good for Smokers, not Tastebuds. Had breakfast here recently and my experience was tainted by the secondary cigarette smoke blown from the mouths of other patrons. This cafe has ashtrays on tables which are under a roof that covers the entire sidewalk. Isn't smoking under any roof illegal in public places? From what I could taste of it the food was mediocre and the coffee is not a match (pun intended!) for other local cafes.
Pepper Pot
Delish!!. We had brunch here on a Sunday. We walked in, relaxing music was playing and were seated quickly by friendly staff. A lovely atmosphere even though it was a buzzing place with every table full of satisfied diners. Waiting for our order I looked around to see magazines, books and even blankets on shelves, ahhh the comforts of home. The coffee was perfect and the food was tasty and well presented. The prices was very reasonable, we will return.

Nice cozy spot.friendly staff.partner and I had button popper breaky and it was pretty good.poached eggs were perfect.

Best Cafe in Newport! The .... Best Cafe in Newport! <br/>The food at Odd Spot is always of the same high standard, and Sarah, Joy and the rest of the team provide excellent friendly service.<br/>They serve delicious breakfast and lunch dishes and the home made date & chocolate cake is one best I've eaten.
Sar
Traditional. Hearty honest breakfasts at their best in a cosy cafe with local, friendly service. a favourite and very affordable.

MissMelburnian
Casual nosh in a fairly generic setting.. The odd spot cafe sounds quirky, has an interesting, zippy name to it, and I hear its popular with the local residents of Spotswood.<br/><br/>But the quirks end there.<br/><br/>The menu was uninspiring and small. The service staff weren't particularly friendly, but were fairly efficient. For a small cafe such as this, I expected a little more than room temperature service - I was hoping for it to have a more personal, almost cheery atmosphere as befitting its name.<br/><br/>Now I don't want to bash it down onto the ground. It certainly isn't the worst of the cafes - not even in the long shot! But it wasn't particularly memorable as well.<br/><br/>My companion and I arrived somewhere in between morning and noon (late morning). It was a great day and we decided to enjoy the air outside. Surprisingly, even though its right beside a fairly busy main road, the traffic wasn't very off-putting - perhaps because it was during the weekend.<br/><br/>We order two lattes. It was okay - but again, not particularly memorable.<br/>We decided that we didn't particularly like the menu but to order something as we were hungry.<br/><br/>The staff were busy, and as they were fairly curt I didn't really feel like to ask them to recommend a brekkie dish; from reading the reviews below it seems the Button Popper is a popular dish, but again, the lack of a friendly vibe or a smile made me feel like I might have been cast a look of annoyance if I bothered the waitress with my demands.<br/><br/>I ordered a chicken foccacia for myself, and a bowl of wedges for my companion, as he wasn't happy with our treatment or the menu offerings.<br/><br/>I did find the use of tomato sauce in these cute tomato shaped dispensers very novel.<br/><br/>The chicken foccacia wasn't bad, but again - it didn't really stand out. <br/>The bowl of wedges tasted like - well, a bowl of wedges. It would have been nice to have tasted something different or pleasantly "odd" as the cafe name suggests, such as the delicious chips in Grill'd cafes - but if I would hazard a guess it was just plain frozen packaged wedges heated and served to us. <br/><br/>The whole affair was very constipated, awkward, and there was a distinct lack of identity from the cafe which I felt made it blend in together with every other suburban cafe.<br/><br/>Nothing in particular stood out.<br/><br/>We left fairly quickly, feeling very much in limbo. There was a lack of a satisfaction that we had achieved anything (e.g. had a satisfying breakfast, had great conversation, great service, an interesting affair, etc) and we actually had breakfast again at another cafe a little while later.<br/><br/>I suppose the Odd Spot cafe did manage to accomplish what its name suggested, but not in the way we would expect. The whole experience was very odd.<br/> <br/>I normally drop an "I don't like it" vote to a cafe I find off putting, have absolutely rude service or unacceptably bad food. But because the service wasn't rude, food wasn't unacceptably bad (just very generic tasting) or off-putting in particular, I decided to leave it without a vote.<br/><br/>Perhaps an acceptable place to drop by for a casual snack if you're passing by, but not worth a visit solely dedicated to trying its food or coffee.
Tony Featherstone
I like it. CUT TO THE CHASE: The coffee is great. I like mine strong my wife likes hers weak....we were both happy with the results.<br/>Very friendly staff...that was the first thing i noticed. It can get very busy though so i would recommend an early arrival.<br/><br/>The food was nice....great homemade jam..<br/><br/>we were given water without asking with should always be the case but hardly ever is.<br/><br/>Food nice, price is fine.<br/><br/>Shame they dont open at 7am as i wont be able to go to a pre-work brekky mid week.<br/><br/>In my top 4 Willi / Newport cafes for sure.

Love the odd spot. Great service and great food and coffee. Often go in on the weekends for lunch as a group and never disappointed.
Jackstar
Great for breaky. We regularly have breaky here and the food and service is really good. We went there last weekend and the only complaint was that our chai was ordered first and came when we were halfway through our meal. The waitress did apologise for the delay though.<br/>I really love the vegie breakfast and have also tried the delicious cakes and slices. The coffees are good but I enjoy the chai more as it is not that powdered cr*p that some cafes think is acceptable to serve.<br/>The service is great and there is a realy family atmosphere.<br/>'Odd Spot' has become a regular for us and I can't see that changing anytime soon.

Best coffee in the williamstown area by a mile!!

Fire in the belly is SPOT on. Although the restaurant is always busy, the food is worth the crowd. Special mention to the hash brown that comes with the big breakfast. A lightly fried ball of heavenly fluffy mashed potato seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices that simply melts when you bite into it. Never in my life have I tasted such an exquisite ball of potato. Reasonably priced, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

Great little cafe. Absolutely love their pancakes.

Best in town. The best Bircher Muesli going around.....very yummy
Fire In The Belly
Always hits the Spot!. Our local breakfast eatery and have never been disappointed. although busy can always seem to get a seat. great coffee, staff are always friendly and the food is incredible. i go the big breakfast on turkish bread with a side of pesto and is the best i have had. my fiancee will go nothing but the button popper and never stops raving about it. nice chilled out place to spend the morning over some great grub. if ever in the area make sure you drop in, you wont be disappointed.
NL
The cafe was a buzz this morning. Nearly every table full for Sunday morning breakfast. First time visiting this cafe and like other reviewers I had mixed expectations as to what I would experience. The barista seemed to be flustered with the pace of orders & with a booming voice we kind of couldn't not hear her state...& that she had been sick. Many wrong orders, customers outside having to chase down waiters to place an order, and waiters who love to catch up with people they know at the compromise of others eager to order. A buzz indeed! But not sure if it was the right buzz? Coffee okay but not great, breakfast alright, perhaps another visit but not on the weekend to decide if the cafe is worth adding to regular list of breakfast places, will see what happens.

Pleasant breakfast, pleasant surprise. After reading mixed reviews it was with some trepidation that I drove down to Odd Spot Cafe this morning (for a spot of brekkie no less).<br/><br/>The moment I walked in, I knew that I needn't have worried.<br/><br/>Jazz and blues were softy playing, books were stacked on shelves against walls, leather booths greeted me and so did a lady with a friendly smile.... phew!<br/><br/>Looking at the menu I initially thought I wanted something light (I'm trying to be good during the Spring Racing Carnival), but all these thoughts were quickly forgotten as soon as I saw the Vegie Brekkie. Carrot and corn fritters, mushrooms, grilled tomatos, pesto, hommus and fetta... I had to try this! (And try it I did).<br/><br/>Do you know, it wasn't until I wrote the description of the breakfast (just now) that I realised there were no eggs? That's how good it was! The fritters were made with gluten free flour too... bonus!<br/><br/>Needless to say I walked out of there a very happy (but slightly guilty) little vegemite. I'm definitely looking forward to going back on a quiet weekday morning and curling up in one of those booths, with one of those books and enjoying another one of those brekkies.
Simontemplar
Full Breakfast. I went there today and the cafe was freezing cold. THe staff were very pleasant but the breakfast was trying too hard. Home made baked beans were tasteless and the sausages were grey and non descript. The bacon was overcooked at one end and the poached eggs were dropped on top of the beans. The hash brown was home made and very tasty but overall this ranks as one of the worst full breakfasts I have had in Melbourne. Definitely not worth $16.50. ($20 with a cup of tea)
Ellen
Was very impressed with the Button Popper Brekky :) Yum!
Jess
Inconsistent. I used to go to the Odd Spot quite often because it's a pleasant place to sit and eat but the food is rather inconsistent. I like the tuna cakes/rissoles/patties/whatever they're called, which, I guess for reasons of adding an extra couple of bucks, are available every day from the 'specials board'. Sometimes they're great; sometimes they're decidedly not. I also had rissotto here that was more like soup.
Craig Rowley
Odd Spot Good Spot. I've always enjoyed breakfasts eaten at Odd Spot, as well as the odd lunch and dinner.
Rach Donohue
Average coffee and service. Coffee was average as was the service, put me off trying the food.
Ann
Little Overrated. I was expecting more from this place as great reviews. But coffee was way too strong. It was pleasant but not the best.
JR
Odd Spot. Great little cafe. Perfect coffee and a nice selection for breakfast. Definitely worth a visit.
DH
Great breakfast. Am gluten free and FODMAP, and they make me a wonderful breakfast without making me feel like a complete trouble maker!!! Love it.. great coffee too

Cool little restaurant/cafe with great atmosphere, food and staff. Especially recommend their great BFast menu which has the classics but also some inventive and tasty surprises.
