I first discovered this place a week into moving in the area and can say, it’s amazing! I’m regularly here on Sunday brunch but it tends to be very busy (as most brunch places are) staff are friendly and attentive. Food is great, I haven’t had a single issue and coffee tastes perfect each time. Highly recommended
I think this is going to be my new favourite go to place. I live in Altona but it’s worth making the trip because the coffee is very good, the ambiance is nice and peaceful, the place is clean and the staff is friendly. The jaffles are yum. It’s like what I make at home 😊. The price is also affordable to eat out . All in all I am glad to have found this cafe 🤗
Pram, baby and children friendly with delicious food, and a large backyard for your kids to play makes this cafe an excellent place to eat for families with young children. The portions are generous too, which is nice.
We tried Jace’s Friday night Korean and were pretty happy! The fried chicken was so tasty and bibimbap bowl was also delicious! Text your order and they text when it’s ready to pick up or they deliver for $5. Great addition to the area!
Getting a bite to eat for dinner is not an easy task in Newport with the limited number of places open for dinner. So The Backyard's Friday night openings is a welcomed addition to the area!!
We visited The Backyard's 'Jace night' for dinner.
They offer mainly Thai influenced fried chicken and bibimbap to celebrate both the owners and staff's cultures.
We ordered some fried chicken (bones), vegetarian bibimbap (tofu and egg for protein) and a side of Jace's creamy potato and pasta salad.
The bibimbap was a very colourful dish thanks to the variety of vegetables. The veggies and protein was served on a bed of brown rice making the dish a little more healthier than it already is. The serving size is also quite generous and justifies the $16 price tag. It came with a side of gochujang sauce that has a sweeter and less spicy flavour to the original gochujang sauce usually used for cooking in Korean cuisine. We thought all of the flavours worked quite well and tasted more authentic than we had thought it would which was a nice suprise.
The chicken was definitely the highlight. For $20, you get a generous serve of ribs and drumlet pieces of fried chichen. The batter has some herbs and seasoning which made it taste so good without any sauce. But the chicken comes with 3 dipping sauces(tomato, sweet chilli and spicy) for those who need a little more flavour. I personally eat mine with out dipping it into any sauces.
We also had the creamy pototo and pasta salad which was also quite nice.
We were completely full from out dinner and satisfied with our dinner. If the place was closer to where we live, we would definitely be regular customers.
If you are in the area and in search for a feed on a Friday night, give Backyard a go. They mainly provide takeaway and delivery but have just recently opened up their space for eat ins as well.
Just make sure you have cash on you as its cash only at night.
THE BACKYARD EST.2016
The Backyard is a family friendly cafe located New port, Like the name suggest they have a huge backyard area for dining while the kids play.
The Backyard Est.2016 has a great menu along with kids menu and famous for its babycinos, great spot to relax enjoy a meal while the kids play.
I love the maple pulled pork! Ordered it twice out of my 3 visits within a month. The portions at Backyard were great and hearty. Good food, coffee and service. I’m definitely coming back for more!
i go here everyday for my coffee as it never fails. so quick so I'm always in and out. friendly staff, always welcoming and open the door for me with the pram.
Came by to catch up with a girlfriend and her little one. The backyard area is perfect to keep the kids entertained leaving the adults to relax and wind down. Staff were great and attentive; the only downside is ordering at the counter inside where the counter staff don’t necessarily make note of where you’re seated in the backyard outside... confusion ensued a couple of times. Could be easily managed with table numbers.
Great kid friendly cafe! Came here for lunch and to get my bored little one out of the house. I was really impressed with my meal and coffee - I got a crispy pork steamed bun. I’m very fussy when it comes to steamed buns, if they’re too sweet or dry (most are) they make me gag. Not the case at all with this, the bun was tasty but not at all sweet or dry, and same for the pork filling. Nice chips alongside it too.
The backyard bit is excellent. Good visibility and completely enclosed, so no need to worry about little ones doing a runner. Lots of space, so they can all coexist without getting in each other’s way. Good variety of things to play with and do.
My only bits of feedback - the kids ham and cheese toastie we got could have been toasted a bit longer, it was a bit soggy. And the yard could do with a bit more shade, it’s full sun most of the time. They do have a couple of portable umbrellas, but more permanent shade across the tables would be welcome on a day like today.
This is quite a fun cafe for families. They literally have a yard at the back of the cafe which is a little kids paradise. The place was full of mother’s w prams and toddlers which wasn’t surprising lol
The service was excellent and quick. It was a great start to my day. Thank you 😊
This is my new fav cafe in Newport. Definitely worth a visit.
Good cafe for parents with kids, there is a big backyard with toys for kids.I like the deep friend fish with green apple salad, very tasty. Soft shell crab with bun was ok too, but I prefer the fish more. Juices and smoothies are not bad too, I had a coconut juice smoothie, it's not too sweet, pretty nice.
Had such a good experience here! We’d been before and not loved it but decided to give it another go. Coffee was great, juices were great. We both ordered the crispy pork steamed bun and oh my god, it’s obviously their specialty because it was amazing. Pork was cooked perfectly and the chips were nice and crispy. There was a slightly long wait for food but we were informed there would be when we were seated so no problem there.
A very nice & neat cafe that could definitely get overlooked. The staff here were very nice even though they were busy. We ordered the breakfast breakky roll, hash browns with bacon & sauce & ham, cheese & tomato jaffles, all 3 meals were absolutely delicious & the coffee was good also. This cafe is definitely worth a visit
The Hungry Mummasita
+3.5
Great place to have brunch if you have kids! They have a large outdoor space for toddlers to run around with toys and even the restrooms are catered for the kids - good touch! The food for me was just average, coffee was ok and I'm sorry to say but the Matcha latte was disappointing.
Great coffee and the freshly made pastries are delicious too! Always welcoming and friendly, my go to spot for take away coffee! Only one thing that could be improved would be the strength of the take away chai latte :)
We had a pretty decent lunch here. The food were quite simple really but it was put together nicely. The crispy barramundi was not really crispy but the fresh salad and that chili and lime combination made up for it. The soft shell crab was again not crispy but it was decent enough. The coffee and ice chocolate wasn't bad either.
I go to the backyard all the time and I love it. I've tried quite a few things on the menu and enjoyed each of them. Highlights are sticky black rice pudding and chicken kale salad. Tastes nicer than it sounds. Staff are lovely and try really hard.
Baby changing facilities would be good to improve the place as it's popular with mums.
We had breakfast here on yesterday. Definitely one of the best cafe in Newport. I love the simplistic and big blackboard. I think your backyard area is better than the park (with closed gate) or other cafes because I can see my daughter all the time. Coffee was great and the food was fantastic and unique. I recommended maple pulled pork, the combination is a perfect that I never had. We will come back for sure.
My daughter loved the yummy juice and Danish!
Very relaxed atmosphere and cool staff...
Coffee is good...a very nice way to start the day.
Had a gorgeous brunch here yesterday - the special black rice pudding was divine. The rest of the breakfast menu looks a little unexciting to be honest. I'd love a bigger selection of asian-inspired breakfasts, what an awesome point of difference that would be for the area rather than the same old bacon and eggs.
Less than great rating is for the "outside table" - singular (really I would love to see an actual backyard for all the space and the name of the place) and for the almond latte - separated and undrinkable. My coffee was replaced with a long black after some tense negotiation - and was slightly burnt tasting!
If this place could be a night cafe with some tunes, smart cocktails and a beautiful modern asian inspired menu I think it would be a winner and my go to place for summer.
Not had food from here but had the coffee on several occasions. First couple of times were within a week of opening and im sad to say the coffee was awful. My wife had to throw hers away the first time. Since then it's certainly improved significantly and I'd rate it higher than Leroys next door. Last half dozen occasions it's a solid 4/5, the food looks ace.
Edit: have had food here a half dozen or so times, it's great and the service is always fantastic and fast.
Came here for lunch today. Had the beef burger. Service was friendly and professional. All staff were really friendly. Most importantly the food was awesome. Will be back for sure.
Not sure where all the negative coffee snobs are coming from but this place is awesome for the west subs. Coffee is fine! Best in the area by far.
The team in their are super nice, great service, delicious food!
There were no good cafes in Newport until The Backyard opened up. The coffee here is consistently good (it's even locally roasted in Melbourne) - My partner is a massive coffee snob and thinks this place is awesome. The food is also really unique and top notch! It's an awesome cafe, and would definitely go back.
If they ever do up the outdoor area out the back, it'd be an even more popular breakfast place.
Not sure where "Mojito Joe" is on about - pretty sure they didn't go to this cafe...
Just popped in for a quick lunch...coffee was good...service was friendly but wow the caramelised pork bun my partner had was awesome! My sandwich was really good too nice fresh fillings. As a local i will definitely come by again soon.
Unlike another reviewer, I think the coffee here is among the best I have ever had in Melbourne. I have not tried the food but as someone who is an absolute coffee snob, i'd say this is BY FAR the best coffee in the west!
We decided to support the new local last week for dinner and found it refreshingly different, kind of Thai with a twist. Very tasty. My wife tried the coffee when it just opened, and agree it wasn't great, but she gave it another go this morning and reports it was much improved.
Great breakfast... Had the mushrooms yum yum :) service even better!!!!
.......................................................................
This cafe is newly opened and a very welcome addition to the Newport food scene. Its day menu looks delicious with some brunch classics along with some others with an interesting asian spin. The interior is minimalist and industrial as is on trend with most new cafes. Being in a rush I came in around lunch time for a takeaway coffee and was pleasantly surprised with the coffee itself as well as the friendly staff. It was enough to pique my interest and I will definitely be back to try their menu soon.
Owner and staff friendly, new place and still finding there feet but food was awesome. Designed to share, massaman beef curry was best by far. Had three other meals which all were good as well. Flavours were strong and bold and did remind me of my time in Thailand. Service was quick. Overall thumbs up 👍
This place is a good for brunch on the weekends. The soft buns are a bit of a revelation and the jaffle menu is extensive. Staff are friendly and it’s never a problem getting a seat.
Visited over the weekend with my family of four for brunch. Parking was easy out the front, although I will mention it was 1 hour timed, so just be careful of that!
We sat out the back in the courtyard with all the kids toys so our little ones could have a run around and enjoy the space. Service was quick to order our drinks, but we had to go back in and ask if we could order food as no one came out after that to help us and we had two hungry monsters ready to go. Food took approximately 15 minutes to come out from ordering. Drinks were on point. The kids toasties were good. Breakfast dishes were also yum.
I will just note - if you choose to sit out the back, beware of the seagulls, as they will swoop in and try to take your food the second you are off guard.
Great staff, clean establishment, big back playing area for children. The quality of the food is excellent and my only complaint is the small serving of French fries that cost nearly $8 and the small portion of chips and chicken nuggets I think for a similar price. The fries are the best that I've had, good thing I didn't mistake a finger for a chip. Prices are what you'd expect for a Sunday breky at these places so no shock there. My latte was most enjoyable but the glass was rather small and I felt a little disappointed. Still the family enjoyed the experience and that's what matters.
Love the backyard with toys for my 2yo play while we wait for the coffee. Would suggest perhaps more toys for the kids to play!
Lunch was super filling. And coffee was perfect . I am slightly fussy about my coffee. Customer service was great . And food came out quickly and efficiently. Will definitely return.
Location is great, besides a park. Lovely coffee and cakes. Nice staff!
We love coming here. There is a great outdoor space in the back with cubby house, black board and lots of toys for the kids. The food and coffees are great. There are toilets and baby change facilities available. Would really love them to add more shaded tables & seating out the back for the hot sunny days.
