Review Cairo Takeaway - Newtown

Jane D
A lovely and unique experience! The presentation was aesthetically pleasing and the flavours were on point! Service was a tad busy so food took a little while to arrive. Understandable as the restaurant was very busy! Would visit again! Restaurants allow walk-ins so no need to make a booking prior. The cauliflower pocket is the same as the cauliflower in the Mixed Vegetarian Plate.

An Australian take on Egyptian food. Liked the service, the food options were great. The food doesn't taste very authentic, but they have a good take on it. Would go there again definitely. There is also a very cosy outdoor seating area at the back, great for good weather.

Food was delicious and tasted very authentic. Tastes like you are in the streets of Egypt. The food is cheap/reasonable and there are vegetarian options. The staff are great and the service is pretty quick. Place is fairly small but they do have some seating out the back

Amazing food!! Super fresh and excellent value. We had the meat platter, vegetarian, chilli chips and dip platter. 😋 cute courtyard at the back with heaters. Friendly staff and quick service.

A little corner shop near Enmore Theater. We came here for dinner before catching a show at Enmore Theater. We waited for about 10 mins for an outdoor seat (luckily we were a tad earlier). The table however was a bit flimsy and not a lot space if you order a few plates of food. We ordered 4 dishes to share - the meat platter, veg platter, hawawshi and chips. Love all the dishes. Flavourful and reasonable portion. Love the pickles that came with it. Overall experience was good. Would come back again to try other dishes.

Love this place, have been back as the food is delicious and generous portion sizes. Great place to take vegan friends. Menu has a wide selection. So far all that I've tried has been tasty. Will definitely revisit and bring more friends. The atmosphere is also cool, interior decoration very rustic and relaxed.

A fully sick joint for a casual meal. Grab yourself a mixed platter, a hibiscus tea and a seat at the back (weather permitting)! Hella flavourful and food portions are generous so you will leave feeling satisfied. Lovely staff and service.

Our fave local night out. A bit busy most days but great and quick thinking service, food is delicious, made with love and wholesome. Menu has seasonal changes so alwqys something new to look forward to

Lovely little place we had dinner at the other night. The staff is awesome and the feel of this place is just unique which I am unable to explain in words. The ambience is amazing with brilliant staff but keep in mind they are usually busy so get there early. I definitely recommend this place to others.

As a fan of Middle Eastern food, this particular restaurant offers an authentic and fresh Egyptian food. I commend them for their light and crunchy shelled falafels as well as their great customer service. I recommend to try Maalouba, falafels, Mixed Meat plate & the Karkade ďż˝

Absolutely delicious food! I had a vegetarian mixed plate, that was a plentiful taste sensation. The staff, vibe including music was fabulous.
Paul Coutelas
Fabulous food, music and atmosphere! Highly recommend👍

This place is amazing! Authentic Egyptian food and great vibes. Must try the Koshari and falafel plates. Owner Hesham is very friendly and was making the falafel himself :):)
Rebecca Song
Quality food. Mixed plate was 👌. Service was on point too. Will defn be back.

Love this place sooooo much!!! Thanks for the wonderful food and beautiful service, amazing music and the honey balls!!!!!

My friend and I had a meat plate and lamb with cauliflower and rice. It was absolute perfection. I wanted to lick the plate clean. Heaven.

Such a cool vibe! Fresh, delicious food, staff are great. The owner came around serving complimentary sweets to everyone. Thanks Hesim & Mustafa ďż˝

I've never had a falafel wrap this delicious! Just thinking about it makes my mouth water.
Ben Burnett
Such a good little discovery! It's the sort of place that makes you feel like you're eating out of their grandmothers kitchen. The only disappointment I have is that I live so far away!
Kelsey Kobelka
Mad delicious vegan options! The eggplant and the fried cauliflower are sooo good. Love the little pickled goodies on the side too ďż˝

The food was great, it always is. However the wait staff have been really rude and disinterested the last two times i visited on saturday around midday and tonight at dinner time. The same staff member on both occasions.

Loved our visit today for lunch. Food was amazing. As we had my 2 year old granddaughter with us it was practical to sit in the courtyard - perfect on all accounts. Loved every taste and every minute ďż˝

Very good food however unable to order pick up before opening time & wont take order over the phone. Came in to order, was advised a wait time of 15 mins, waited 30 minutes+
They can definitely manage expectations better!
Sharwari R Hawaldar
Decent place with no frills. Food was good, tried meat platter and not disappointed. Seating arrangement could be better..

This place needs to be cleaned ASAP! One of the dirtiest “kitchen” I have ever seen
Tanuj Abrol
Excellent food which was very flavourful. Tried the chicken rolls and falafel. Falafel was definitely one of the best Ive had in Sydney. There portions are well sized for the price. Overall, a great experience.
Kristine
My rating is based on one food item only and that’s the lamb kofta pocket. It was delicious! Can’t wait to go back and try the other dishes 😋
Panda Lover
Impressed by this little dinner! Great portions and really tasty. The cute little backyard won my puppy’s heart and the service was so good!
Sweet And Sour Fork
Indeed, everything tasted as good as it looked; the fattoush salad was freshly made with handfuls of crunchy pita chips, and the cold vegetable stew was a surprisingly hearty addition to the plate. The charcoal grill lamb kofta was my favourite – it was juicy and succulent, and tasted absolutely amazing wrapped in the pita bread with pickles, and a generous smear of the garlicky, aromatic toum. The chicken was a little on the dry side, but it still carried the rich smokiness from the open flames, and to my delight, came pre-coated in garlic sauce.

We were very thankful for the great meal. We liked the lamb köfte and the falafel at most. The Dessert was very tasteful aswell. We‘ll definitively come again.

Cairo is delicious, very Enmore/Newtown crowd but the food is why you’re here and the food is good. It’s not cheap for what it is but it’s fresh and flavourful and I always enjoy it. If you want more of an experience you can walk up to Stanbuli, but otherwise you’ll be well happy after a good feed here.
Eunifoodie
A very humble and small eatery that’s definitely worth checking out if you’re after something different. I recommend getting the meat platter and vegetarian platter so you can get a taste of everything.

Loved everything about CT ! A simple but very clever menu - takes care of everybody’s needs ! The falafels were as good as any you’d get anywhere in the world. Mustafa’s and his crew are most charming, polite and efficient. Today was an all vegetarian selection - Mixed Veg Plate, Koshari and Falafel. Next time soon it’s the meat that’s on offer !
I loved the simplicity of the open kitchen and sparse and stylish furniture. Back soon !!!

Although the falafel and other dishes are a slight variation to traditional middle eastern food, it’s still very good and brings back warm feelings of back home eating good home cooked meals. Staff are pretty efficient and pricing is good

I just happened to stumble across this spot whilst running some errands in the hood. I only got to try the hibiscus iced tea and cabbage rolls. I am looking forward to going back to try the falafels which everyone raves about! #egyptianfood #icedtea #casualdining

When your veggies 🍅 look this good, you’ll wanna eat every bite.😋
‘Mixed vegetarian platter’ - falafel, cauliflower, eggah (Arabian omelette), with salad, pickles, bread and dip.
I have a fond memory of the I trip I did in Egypt 🇪🇬 years ago and this place delivers the flavours that I was expecting, fresh and full of flavour.
Jessica Taniran
The falafels here are amazing and are a definite must try. We ordered two places - one with falafels and the other with kofta. Both dishes were lovely and included a variety of sides which were very good. The price is a little on the expensive side given the portion size, but I would still think it's worth a try!

It might be an authentic experience of Cairo, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. For a start the space is small, hot and crowded. Even if you don’t have to sit on the street the tables inside are at milk crate level, and everyone ends up holding the food on their laps. As for the food, the marinated chicken is probably the best thing going. The beans with boiled eggs were swimming in oil, and the salads uninspired. Two stars.
Those Who Love To Eat
This inconspicuous eatery on Enmore Rd has no real signage from the street, you have to be looking for this place to find it!
When you walk into this place, you will instantly be greeted with their order counter and open kitchen with meat skewers cooking over hot coal, pots bubbling away with goodness know what in it. To your left are some of their vegetables on display in their glass cabinet.
You can tell this place is going to be worth your while!
Take a menu and you order and pay at the counter. The menu is simple with a few items under each category, making it easy to choose!
This place will set you back around 25 p/head with drinks. It’s not the cheapest lunch you could have, but as a treat to yourself, it’s well worth the extra hard earned coins.
To the food! The service was good and friendly, the food came out fairly promptly.
We ordered: a mixed meat plate and a hawawshi! Both delish. The hawawshi is like a North African version of the Mexican quesadilla. With flatten lamb mince in the middle. The triangle thing just bursts with flavour!
The mixed meat plate was something similar that you can get at a Lebanese restaurant. Really tasty, the meats are tender and flavoursome.
This place gets a thumbs up and is well worth a visit.
Fantastic! Browsed the selection of Middle Eastern restaurants around Enmore and ended up here. A little pricey for lunch but worth it. Great asthetic, friendly staff and beautifully fresh & beautifully cooked food. We had a lamb kofte pita and a mixed meat plate. Pickled veggies add great colour plus a nice sour flavour and the chicken is wonderfully moist.

Very well prepared meats and a lot of amazing vegetable options and just one of the pita pockets is a decent size. There's a lot of competition in Mediterranean restaurants around here and I don't what's specifically Egyptian (maybe if they had a lentil...although they do have a bean dish that's probably good) but the food came out like Jordanian with lots of pickles and vegetables. They've got a nice and friendly interior and a few places to eat inside, not just takeaway.
Fat Boi
Best falafel in Sydney. Maybe even the whole world.

Everything they make is delicious and fresh, you literally can’t go wrong.

The prices are bordering on unbelievable given the quality of the food.

Only downside is that it’s small and popular so sometimes you’ve gotta wait a while for a table.
Wendy
We walked pass this place on a Saturday evening and it was super packed so decided to come back the following week for lunch. The place serves Egyptian cuisine and does an amazing mixed meat platter for $24. The charcoal chicken was the highlight of the dish. Serving size was more than enough for one person. The hibiscus tea was a little overrated. Overall very delicious and we will be back to try the other dishes!
Jenni
This place is always packed, and it’s not hard to see why. Can’t fault the food or the service, and the space is lovely for enjoying a platter with a glass of wine or three.

I’d heard of Cairo Takeaway but I got a strong recommendation to try it from an English school teacher who is Chinese and Jewish and called herself Jewsian. I love that! My delight in the multicultural ways of the world is also why I was excited to try Cairo Takeaway, of which I’d heard a bit of buzz..
Phfat
Yummmm! Love this place. We ordered the meat dish and the bean dish. The flavours were amazing, especially the chicken- that was my absolute favourite! Both dishes come with super soft bread you can tear apart and dip in the food. Plus it's byo. Winning

The food is fresh and well-cooked, but the flavours are subdued -- this is Egyptian food for Anglo-Aussie hipsters and the spices and herbs are kind of missing in action. It is also REALLY PRICEY. Five bucks for a 330ml Pepsi or 7-Up! My meal there was close to double the price I'd pay somewhere not much further out of the city, where the fit-out is less stylish but the flavourings are more authentic.
Thomas Mikhail
This place is buzzing with the best range of Egyptian food in Sydney! If you’re looking to go back in time and experience Egyptian culture this is your place! With their famous falafel or their succulent lamb kofta, the food will make your mouth water. Despite the seating not being spacious, the restaurant is great for gatherings and those quick food fixes and I definitely recommend their mixed plate!

Charcoal cooked meats alongside freshly made falafels. The place is pumping every night - literally house remix are played at full volume. The salad sides are fresh and flavoursome. I love the tangy hibiscus tea. Fast service. BYO or buy a tinnie.
Chris Vera
Good food, good price. Not the best service but the people is pretty friendly so it's ok.
Drinks: Small selection of wines and beers (they sell Young Henrys 👍, the brewery around the corner), prices are the same you can find in the city.
Bobby Fuller
Bad service. Staff are forgetful, rude, and unapologetic about this. Owner is not in control of his business. Making people believe you have a waiting list, when really its just get in there and nab a table. You should not ask customers to trust you if you can't follow through with the basics.

A giant YES to this place and a MUST for your foodie bucket list in Inner West.
This little corner venue opposite the Enmore Theatre is focused on a small traditional Egyptian menu done EXCEPTIONALLY well.
Can’t wait to return.
The food was fantastic and so was the atmosphere.
We shared the koshari and a mixed plate, while I absolutely loved my drink, Karkadé (chilled hibiscus flower) too. The flavours of everything were delish!
It's the mid-afternoon slump on King Street. The coffee bars are slowly winding down. Lunch is well-over, and there's not many on the street. I'm often hungry during this time, and there is really only one good place to go, and probably the only time you could pull a seat. I've seen the place on a Saturday night, and even from a blurry distance, it still looks full sans any standing room. For those who haven't ventured away from the noise down to Enmore Road, Cairo Takeaway has been open now for nearly a year, and already standing as a local favourite.

With a rustic shopfront, there's stone coloured walls with strategically-chipped concrete to form what is an earthy, ceiling high portrait, really only noticeable after you've once been dazzled by the bright, fresh colours waiting for assembly in Cairo's open kitchen. Seating is a neat mix of simple cane outdoor tables and metal bar seating inside. Whilst you wait for your order, watch on intently with the mixed relishes (including eggplant mesa'a'ha), fresh herbs and pickles help dress all the plates and pockets of fresh grilled meats and Cairo's own Taameyya - Egyptian Felafels.

This is a fast, cozy and delicious food joint hidden away on a corner of Enmore Rd. It's beginning to become a bit of a staple for me before I head to a gig or show in Enmore or Marrickville. It's reliably fast, but all of the food is constantly being made fresh as well.
The cauliflower roll is fantastic, as is the slow cooked lamb and rice pilaf.
Only downside is how small the venue is - not too many seats available.
Ahmed IG
Very very pricy!!
Common who would pay $15 for this mini dish!?
And doesn't taste great either.
The menu doesn't have any varieties as well.

This smallish restaurant/takeaway is located on Enmore Road. Check out their menu, place your order and make payment at the counter. Service is upbeat and friendly here. You can even check them frying the falafels to order.

There was lots of choice on the menu and hard to decide on what to eat for dinner however we decided to share a few dishes between us. We had Falafel Roll which had a nice balance of salad, pickles and those freshly prepared falafels. These were bright green and quite soft and not dried out like some I've had previously. The Cauliflower Roll was very meaty for a vegetarian dish and would be quite filling. Both rolls had great flavour. We also had the Mixed Meat Plate. Succulent pieces of chicken and lamb were on it with flat bread, dips, salad, and pickles. Tasted so nice and highly enjoyable. Sweet Potato Crisps were lovely as well. Nice crunch and flavouring to them with the dukkah.

It may seem like a small takeaway shop but definitely step in try some wonderful Egyptian food.

Such a good feed at Cairo Takeaway! I've never really tried Egyptian food, but now that I have I can honestly say that I would definitely recommend it! We ordered the Vegetarian mixed plate and the Koshari (lentils and rice, chickpeas, pasta, fried onion and salsa) and it was all delicious. With a range of different flavours, tastes and textures, each component left me wanting more! If you're in Enmore, I would definitely recommend stopping by and giving it a try! And the black mint tea is a must also! (But then again, I'm always a sucker for a good fresh mint tea)

Had lunch here Saturday and ordered the mixed meat plate. Food was top notch, especially the kofta! The staff were fantastic... Highly recommended, will definitely be back soon.

Delicious food and a friendly funky atmosphere. We had the vegi mixed plate and the koshari lentils and rice. Open til late too which is a bonus, can't wait to come back and try the falafel roll!

I came here with some friends on a weekend night and it was pretty full. They managed to squeeze us in.

We sat outside on the wicker tables which was the only let down because they were hard to eat of. The food though, was beautiful! We all shared a lot of the dishes. My favourite was probably the Koshari which was so full of flavour. The dips and bread plate was a great serving size and the dips were amazing. The vege share plate had so many incredible elements. The pickled veg... OMG. The sweet potato crisps were cooked perfectly and the fries had quite a kick to them. Another stand out was the felafel. So moist and tasty.

The lady serving us was so friendly. I will go back for sure.

C A I R O ☆ T A K E A W A Y
This modest restaurant on the corner draws in huge crowds every night.

The reason why? Because they make simple yet traditionally tasty food!

Don’t expect large servings for the price that you pay tho.

✌@foodiesguidetosydney

Delicious food, friendly staff and good vibes! If you want some hands down amazing felafel and chicken plates this is the place, and if the smell doesn't hook you in straight away then I'm afraid you're beyond salvation.

This was my second visit to Cairo Takeaway and this time it was breakfast on the long weekend. The restaurant had an outdoor courtyard, inside seating and but we sat at the tables on the footpath as we took the dog with us. I ordered the Karkada as my drink which is chilled hibiscus flower, it's sort of tastes like a bitter Ribena drink. Then for food I ordered the Shakshouka Baked Eggs with tomato, capsicum and spicy Sucuk sausage. The dish was served with Lebanese bread and the eggs were cooked perfectly with a nice runny yolk. The portion was on the large size with at least 3 eggs in the dish and a good amount of spice from the Sucuk. Last but not least I tried a small amount of their delicious falafel that was moist and full of flavour.

Cairo Takeaway

mirroring the Cairo you had in your mind by importing the wooden vegetable cafes and glass-bottled colas. This new Aussie joint is so Cairo original makes you believe you can pay by the Egyptian Pound..... yet don't try.
The soul of the place is the Australian chef of Egyptian parents in the helm along with his magnificent designer wife touches all over the restaurant walls as the body.

Tattooed with Um Kalthum face on nostalgic walls.... this restaurant has more than just impressive deco. CairoTakeaway has the best Egyptian Food east of the nile with ambitions to come closer to you.

The food tasted amazing and the portion size was more than enough! The service was awesome as well! Everyone was heaps friendly and accomodating 😊

If you want the best falafels in Sydney, go here.

There aren't many Egyptian places in Sydney, so I was super excited for Cairo Takeaway to open.

I took my dad (who is Egyptian) and he loved his veg mixed plate. Went back with another friend who also really enjoyed her falafel plate. I have tried their falafel plate, and their shakshouka baked eggs, both delicious.

The service is also great and friendly. I will be back again and again!
Sydneyguyrojoe
First impressions, hot and dark inside,a small outdoor area at the back,a little less at the front,I can't imagine big groups coming here
Menu limited but that's fine
A plus is cane juice is available

Food wise I liked it. The mixed meat platter includes chicken (with a taste of lemon on it) and lamb kofta (you can really taste the lamb). Both were nice but if I had to choose the chicken is the better of the two. I liked the garlic dip that came with it

My wife had the falafel plate and it's green inside the falafel but I enjoyed the unique taste to it

Food came out at a reasonable time and friendly

My main gripe would be portion size
Barely had any chicken meat and the falafel were half the size of a falafel you would get anywhere else

If I went to a Lebanese restaurant and ordered a mixed plate,it would be the same price but triple the portion size

Overall I enjoyed my experience
The taste of their food is better than your average middle eastern restaurant
But it's hard to squeeze Inbetween people to get out,
Wouldn't come back if I was hungry
Sam Mular
Awesome food. Perfectly cooked meat, good serving size and friendly staff. The sweet potato crisps were addictive. Give it a go. Would definitely recommend!
Steve
Total gem. Loved the take on Middle-Eastern food. The charcoal chicken is something else. We are ordering for a second time takeaway tonight!
Liam
WOW! A low key and chilled eatery with fresh, light ingredients. I ordered the CAULIFLOWER ROLL - roasted cauliflower in a thin pita-pocket style bread with tomato, cucumber and a light creamy sauce. I was left feeling satisfied yet nice and light. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Environment is simple yet very comfortable. HOT TIP: there's a cute courtyard out the back.

A new hidden gem on Enmore Road. Only been opened for two weeks. The falafel was crispy and fresh and the chicken is coated in a delicious sauce. The wraps are filled with fresh salad and pickles. Been here a few times already and have been very impressed with the service. Great for lunch or dinner. A must to add to your list if you haven't tried already.
