Review Rolling Penny - Newtown

Amy Kei Yan Tran
This interesting cafe near the end of Newtown had in and outdoor seating areas, which unfortunately due to being close to the main road, impacted on the atmosphere. However, once the coffee and food arrives, you forget the road is even there. The coffee is rich in taste but so easy to drink. The chosen dishes includes the Divorced Eggs, a Three mushroom dish and an Eggplant crisp. All e dishes were beautifully presented and were packed with great and interesting flavours. The Eggplant crisp was a particular favourite consisting of grilled eggplant, pickled vegetables which provided a welcoming tang to the dish, a boiled egg, adding a lovely aroma. All placed on top of a large crisp providing a brilliant crunch to the end of the bite. The staff were very friendly and impressively knowledgeable of their menu, and so was able to provide great recommendations. Definitely come here if you're looking for unique food for breakfast, brunch or lunch.

The best brunch I’ve had in a while! Delicious gluten free bread! Bacon and coffee were perfection 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

Friendly service and the food was ok. I personally didn’t like the buckwheat pancake.

The breakfast menu is great. The service is great. The coffee is great. My biggest problem was now all my clothes stink from old oil fryer oil. The place is dusty and generally unclean and rundown. It lets down the other things going for it. Come on - clean it up!

This place is an absolute gem. It's not a overstatement to say that some of their breakfast dishes could be served in a fine dining restaurant for double the price. Consistenly excellent, creative cooking and a regularly changing menu. Great coffee, and free babycinos!

Awesome spot for a coffee and catch up. Peaceful outdoor area in the back.

I ate at the Rolling Penny for the first time on the weekend, with my mother and a friend. The service was excellent. The food was deliscious. The dishwasher was noisy as hahaha. My only comment, which I gave to the staff at the time, was the menu. The menu doesn't do the food justice. I was confused by what the food actually was. The menu lists the ingredients beautifully, but needs to focus a little more on a descriptive of the finished product. Example. The poached chicken sandwhich. Maybe go with something like ... poached chicken blended with aioli? The staff seemed quite interested in what I had to say about the menu. So hopefully it will be a little clearer on my next visit. And I will be back :) But again. The food and service was fabulous! Highly recommemd this place.

We had our engagement party at rolling penny and woah boy was it just the best time ever. Martin and his amazing team were so accommodating and fun loving, the food was amazing and the music is always on point. Thank you so much again, it was the most beautiful evening for us!! P.s whatever the sparkling wine was, everyone is still talking about how delicious it is!

I'm calling it- the best cafe in Newtown. I've spent hours and days here enjoying the great vibes, music and the blokes behind the counter remind you that the place is yours as much as theirs. Coffee and food are just the starting points here. Cheers guys

I love spending my weekend knocking back long blacks and enjoying a good conversation with the guys at Rolling Penny. While it's not hard to be hospitable, places that live and breath hospitality are hard to find! Rolling Penny is a gem.

The best cafe breakfast I've had in Sydney, the coffee was perfect and the Bircher muesli was amazing! The poached eggs and sourdough were delicious too, get it with Haloumi cheese!

Fantastic place. Great coffee by Little Marrionette. Top barista. The food is amazing with fabulous specials...think house made beans with smoked mozzarella.

Hands down Best place in Sydney

Friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. Had the most delicious pork roll with fresh slaw. Chai was the right flavour for me (I'm fussy with my chai being not too sweet). Looking forward to the next pork roll and other treats on the menu. We'll be back soon :)

Great coffee! Wonderful service. Definitely try the Chorizo with Corn Bread. Yum!! Worth traveling from the Northern Beaches to Newtown, in crazy Sydney weekend traffic for The Rolling Penny.

Tempted by the positive reviews on Google Maps, we rolled into Newtown for a very sunny 8AM breakfast at Rolling Penny. Our waiter cheerfully let us know that there was a whole new menu starting today, which disappointed me very deeply as I had already had my mind set on what I wanted. Luckily what I wanted was still on the menu, albeit renamed and with a small price increase.

A hipster little joint located at the south end of Newtown with a cool mish mash of repurposed tables and seating, with a mighty cool artwork in the main wall by the coffee machine. Scotty Nagy, the artist has certainly produced something that fits the space perfectly. An interesting and eclectic menu from Welsh rarebit, to buckwheat pancakes and smoked trout.

Went here at 8am on a weekday. Ordered Rye Toast w/ Butter and a Peppermint tea. Toast was nothing special and small in serving size & the tea whilst it came in a large takeaway cup(as req) had minimal flavour to it. Affordable prices but not worth it. Probably wont be back. I like that they are dog friendly there. Pay at counter.

Friendly staff and serves a decent piccolo. Highly recommend the tacos. The mushroom roll was a bit too much for me unless you are sharing. The courtyard at the back would be a good sitting selection for the summer. However there is a wait on tables and if you are impatient this might not be the place for you.

Just bear in mind that you might be waiting a while for food. If you'd need to grab a quick bite I would go elsewhere.

That being said, I will be coming back.

Great vibe, mum and I both enjoyed the food. Simple but done well, tasty. Flavourful but not overbearing. I highly recommend the mushroom baguette. Juicy mushrooms with fresh, soft bread with a nice crust. Lots of vegetarian options, the cheeses in both our meals topped it off in our opinion.

Staff were accommodating and let me charged my phone. I had spent two hours at a clinic prior and was browsing on my phone so the batt was low when I finally went on with my day.
Service was okay, and that's fine: the waitstaff were unpretentious, genuine and owned it.

Great little local spot - and you can even lunch at the back little courtyard! I went twice in a week - I love the mushroom & cheese baguette 👍🏻 nice crispy grilled cheese and truffle oil on brickfielda baguette. The coffees great, service excellent. Might return to try that espresso martini for breakfast one fine morning!

I think Rolling Penny wants to add some class to south Newtown and they have just a short but very interesting-sounding menu. The famous brekkie roll had some good ingredients but no killer taste - maybe needed better sauce or maybe just more of the good stuff since it was a very small roll for $14.50. I paid $4 extra for haloumi and that added nothing because it was weirdly soggy and tasteless. The coffee was rich and creamy but also a bit grainy. The front staff are great but I think they need a cook who can do justice to the ingredients and prices.

Ok food, average coffee (bitter and milk was like burn and super "foamy", I expected a bit more from this place), Ok service, just ok.
Food? Average. They have a kind of "open kitchen" so you can see when they're making your breakfast, but that area didn't look very clean.
Tables were dirty and flies were flying around. Background music was good.

There's many options in this area. Rolling Penny is a nice place, but needs to try a bit harder.

Coffee is great as with the food. Another hipster style joint in hipsterville. Staff are accommodating and friendly, well worth a stop if you’re in the area,

I've been here a few times with a bunch of people and its been great each time. I love the Smashed Avocado and the fresh Croissants, they use really tasty jam. My hubby loves the cold brew coffee and the enthusiasm of staff, fellow coffee enthusiasts. The only thing I think they are really missing is something for the sweet tooth, pancakes or something on the breakfast menu!

I live just round the corner and this is my Go To for coffee, given the choice of a dozen or so competing coffee shops around. Best coffee on South King, hand down. Staff are super friendly, and although the menu is small and bit of a wait at times, the food is pretty inventive, they regularly switch up the menu, and its always always tasty! I only have 2 gripes - 1) it can get uncomfortably hot inside (but there's a shaded back area), and 2) no marshmallows with babycino which makes it my daughters least favourite.

Cool brunch spot! Cute, casual cafe with interesting twists to regular brunch foods. They cannot make chai though to save their lives and we always sit out back in the courtyard kos its always way too hot

This place has a great vibe. Sit in the window and watch the world go by with the ice tea of the day. The egg and bacon sandwich is delicious with this spicy relish to give it some pep.

Rolling Penny is located on south King Street towards St Peters station. I popped in on a Sunday morning about 9ish and it wasn't busy so had my choice of table. The café isn't large but probably fits around 30 people but feel relaxed and comfortable. They serve Little Marionette coffee which they make perfectly to giving you that morning kick. The menu is fresh and simple and I decided to order the breakfast roll. The breakfast roll has heaps of crispy bacon, double poached eggs, baby spinach, aioli and house made tomato relish in a white roll. I can hands down say this is the best bacon and egg roll I can remember. The eggs were perfectly poached so the egg was all runny when you bit into it. This isn't a small breakfast roll and kept me full until the afternoon. The rest of the menu looks good and I wouldn't mind trying some of their other sandwiches. I just don't know if I am going to be able to go past the Breakfast Roll.

Walking into Rolling Penny is like walking into your best friend’s home. There’s a certain comfort, familiarity and relaxing aura that envelopes you, as you find a seat. Rolling Penny eschews the fancy fit-out and goes for a functional space. It is as though everything that’s meant to be there is there and nothing is contrived. So yeah no subway tiles, or Eddison lights. As I wait for my coffee, I look to the canvases hanging out the wall and perhaps they tell the story best about Rolling Penny. A milk bottle suggests that the cafe is family friendly. The thongs(slippers) suggest it’s a casual experience and of lastly a sandwich, well that’s pretty obvious! Rolling Penny sits on the St Peters end of King Street, which for me is a bit less frenzied than the city end of King Street; suffice to say parking is a far easier proposition on this end.

Cool cafe at the south end of King Street. Limited sweet options (muffins and banana bread) but a range of inventive breakfasts. Good coffee, good music, good vibe.
