Review Martini Cafe - Newtown

David Maddison
Such a cool vibe with a huge range for breakfast complimented with a specials menu. Love the open front onto king street so you can watch the local wildlife pass by whilst enjoying a smooth coffee which is prepared right in front of you. They honey bacon is thick and so damn tasty - loved it!

Great food and coffee. Just shame that when ordered our coffees on walking in the barista served and made at least 3 to 4 people who walked in after we seated for takeaways, then made ours last. Other than that friendly staff and nice ambience.

The best Almond Hot Chocolate that I’ve had. Nice staff, delicious food. I highly recommend

It was a pleasure to have a breakfast. The Avo Breakky was very good ( the presentation, the portion, the flavor) and the mango frappe was awesome. Highly recommend this place.

Delicious food and great service. Highly recommend. Great takeaway options as well.

Salmon Stack is highly recommended! The coffee is great and the service made my day.

Coffee was good. Breakfast bruschetta was delicious - would've preferred if they were more heavy handed with the haloumi cause I loveeee haloumi. Service was friendly and prompt. Loved the chilled atmosphere - attended on a sunny Sunday day. Would come back to try other items on the menu.

One of the cheapest cafes on King St, still open weekends through lockdown thankfully! The staff are all angels and they have heaps of nice vego options! 💖

I would give this place zero stars if I could, was excited by the choice in the menu and how good it all sounded, ordered a ice coffee and the eggs Benedict with bacon, waited for a good 15 minutes and still no ice coffee, asked about how much longer it would be to find out it hadn't even been written up to be made, changed it to a cappuccino, waited another 15 minutes before asking where my coffee was to find out it hadn't been written up again, another ten minutes passed and I was brought out a flat white, told the waitress, it wasn't correct, she took it back and put chocolate powder on top and brought it back to me, my meal finally come out, my toast was literally warm bread and my bacon was cooked so hard I couldn't even cut it with my knife or my teeth and the hollandaise sauce was so lemony I couldn't ingest it without coughing, I told the waitress politely that my meal wasn't quite right (only brought up the toast as I didn't want to be too harsh) and she Rudely informed me that no one else has had a problem with it and I'm the first person to complain, and then she left, I wasn't offered a replacement, or a reimbursement, was charged full price for a indigestible meal and rude service, I've never been treated so badly in my life

As we arrived a chilled bottle of water & glasses were bought to our table. Great atmosphere just sitting in the front watching Sydney bustle while enjoying our iced chocolate & mango smoothie. We ordered the Eggs Benedict. Mine was with Salmon while my wife had hers with ham. We were both very happy with the breakfast & highly recommend this Cafè after our visit.

Too many cafés to choose Newtown... After our meeting we decided to go Martini cafe for our lunch. Four of us with limited time ordered our lunch. I ordered for veggie salad at first and ask the chef if he can add a grilled lamb for me . Lunch came within short time .... What an express service !!!! Impressed.... And food difficult to explain in words .... Probably best salad I had ever eaten....dressing was fantastic!!! for me it was awesome food in very reasonable price. My friends were also very happy with the service and food quality. Eagerly waiting week end to get in there with family.

Our go-to cafe whenever we are in Newtown. Great, friendly service, good prices and the food is always sensational!

I felt the portions sizes were not very good. However the cat and coffee were spot on.

Pretty awesome. Service is well above cafe standards. Food was great. Hidden gem.

Wow. 40 degrees on a Saturday morning. It was hot in Sydney. So we were looking for somewhere with a table and not out in the sun! The Martini Cafe had a cute table available right in front of the coffee station so we decided to give it a go. I have a weakness for potato rosti but these tasted more to me like the Indian Aloo Tikka or Aloo Bonda, the consistency was more mashed than grated potatoes and served as little fritters rather than a hash brown-like plateful.

Martini's one of the longest standing south Newtown cafes but it's kept up with food trends and service improvements. The breakfast menu is still fairly standard but there are a lot of options, they come together well, and you get a lot for the price (I had a big bowl of potato cakes with egg, salmon and salad). The coffee's hot and flavoursome, although not the heavy rich kind that I prefer. Staff are great.

The average reviews should not dissuade you from coming to this unassuming little cafe. Not only is it quaint and beautifully decorated but the food is absolutely amazing, simple recipes done well. I had the corn fritters which was well proportioned and included the best cooked bacon I’ve ever had!! Go here for a break from the overthought hipster cafes that litter Newtown streets.

Been here twice and I like the layout of the cafe - a few street front seats, a few indoor and a quiet little courtyard out the back. The only problem with the courtyard is hat there are lots of mosquitos. The staff so put coils out which helped a little, but we still got bitten. There is also the neighbours cat that wanders around on all the tables and chairs.

The menu doesn’t wow me, but there are a number of classics and choices available.

The Spanish Brekky was great. I love the flavour combination of the pesto and the chorizo. And the poached eggs on all of our dishes were perfectly shaped and cooked - Well done chef!

The corn fritters were okay. Not my favourite, but tasty none the less.
The side of haloumi was a good portion.

Staff are friendly and service wasn’t too too long.

Would dine here again as it’s convenient and well priced.

Great cafe on King Street. The service was excellent and very friendly.

We came here for brunch and wasn’t too busy. We just grabbed a table at the front of the cafe. You could choose to sit outside at the front or the courtyard if the weather is good.

We chose the special of Spanish Brekky which consisted of chorizo, red peppers, poached eggs, and pesto on sourdough. It packed a punch in flavour and well constructed. The Ricotta Hot Cakes came in a stack of three and were fluffy and came with caramelised banana, crispy bacon, and maple syrup. Great combo and definitely filling.

Coffee was nice as well as the fruity Mixed Berry Frappe.

Brunch was required before our macaron making class down the road and the random happy selection was Martini, on the off chance there may be an expresso one inside.
The lentil special on the outside board didn't bode well but all was not lost. Praise be, a great all day breakfast menu was to be found and maple bacon was the indulgent selection for me. Plenty of sweet meaty bacon with a few bang on poached eggs had me a very full stomach and set up for the day.
Really great coffee here also. I neglected to check the brand but if you're a long black drinker, you will find a rich, deep flavour without a hint of bitterness. A coffee well made and a rare thing.

Good food. Awesome drinks.
Good service.
Friendly staff.
Reasonable price.
Beautiful backyard.

Best place in Newtown for breakfast and lunch.
The food wasn't very good, everything was pretty dry BUT the service was great. The girl working was super friendly and welcoming and efficient even though it's sweltering hot. The coffee and juice were yummy. Maybe the sort of place you go for a chill drink and not really for a meal.

Best in Newtown for all day breakfast and lunch
Good value of money .
We had a massive meat monstro & Mint and pineapple frappe . Enjoyed the most😀

Good, hearty brunch food! Not fancy but flavourful. Generous portions, cheap and a chill vibe. The DIY decor and eclectic feel reminds me of the old Newtown cafes that i used to go to with friends in my Uni days around 2007-2010.

MY FAVOURITE@NEWTOWN
Been here for many times and never disappointed good service food and coffee courtyard the best will definitely come back .

I absolutely adore this place! Lived in Newtown for over a year and it's my favourite breakfast joint! Amazing coffee (comes in great sized Chunky mugs), amazing food (the ricotta hot cakes and French toast are stunning) and friendly staff who remember you :) there's even a resident cat in the back garden! Oh, and the fresh pressed juices are the perfect hangover cure! Only issue is service is occasionally slow but if you're having a leisurely brekkie that isn't an issue.
Always Choose Pizza
Tiny unassuming cafe that opens back into a great courtyard. Welcomed by cheap Bloody Mary's and chilled friendly staff. Spoilt for choice by the menu but settled on the Mexican eggs, my only regret is that I didn't add bacon. But that's my cross to bear, I made the mistake so you don't have to

Friendly Staff. Newtown loves you.. Quality food and one of the better Newtown Coffee places. Highly recommend the basil/avocado eggs on toast. Gorgeous staff who are kind accommodating in a classic-Newtown-style cafe. 5 stars.

Service without pride. We had the misfortune of having a coffee here at Easter. The young barista served up luke warm coffee and threw his butts out the front door into the gutter beside us - can't recommend.

Food is delicious. Staff are ridiculously friendly. Love it. My new favourite brunch spot.

Nice food, had the Avo special which was generous serving of avocado, mushrooms, poached eggs & basil pesto on a piece of sourdough toast for $15.

Hubby had the full monstro which wasn't big enough for him. It had sausages, bacon, baked beans, poached eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms & thick toast for $19.

Nice food & coffee. would go there again, massive menu

It's a buzzy little place with plenty of options, quick service and reasonable pricing. All breakfast items are under $20 and most are under $15. In the past while, Martini has started do evenings as a bar. I imagine the home made style bar snacks and burgers are the reason why people were cramming the tables late on a Saturday evening as we wended our way home from the glittery street parade we had enjoyed.

Cafe Martini A PLACE TO BE . The food at cafe martini is simple but the flavours has remarkable depth. It has already been a week I went to the cafe and I can still fill the taste of the food i had. All the staff members greeted my companions and me with smiles and care. I would recommend CAFE MARTINI to anyone with a sweet tooth. I know i will certainly be returning soon.
Prem_mralone
U are missing something if you haven't been to MARTINI yet. Simply the best place for breakfast and lunch!!!! My words are not tasty enough to explain the food ..... Need to be there for finding out the real taste. Awesome Place, People and Food. Eagerly waiting for my next visit .

I've never been treated so rudely.

Recommended. I ordered a brekky bruschetta and my friend ordered a meat monster. The basil pesto on the bruschetta was so good and very fresh, eggs were perfectly poached. I really enjoyed my breakfast.

Just had breakfast here and it was absolutely terrible. The worst breakfast I've had in years. Eggs came out fried (no choice) burnt on the bottom egg yolk pretty dry, 1 table spoon of standard Boring beans, toast way to think, sausages were slimy and greasy, hash brown really greasy, and the bacon was that hard I couldn't even cut it to try it.

Not only that it's the most expensive breakfast I've paid for in Newtown. Bitterly bitterly dissapointed!!!

Mediocre for a Newtown cafe. I've given this place a couple of goes now, and while the service is very friendly (and on my first visit, there was a super cool resident cat!), there are some notable downsides:
- They use tinned baked beans, and what appear to be frozen hash browns. (I am a bit appalled when ANY cafe fails to make its own sides, and as a patron of another cafe, Envy in Summer Hill, that sets the gold standard for these particular items, I find it especially unacceptable)
- All cooked breakfast items are very oily, except for the baby spinach, which is weirdly dry.
- The courtyard is incredibly dingy and miserable, and not in an atmospheric, 'Newtown' kind of way.

My dining companions have enjoyed good coffee and delicious banana bread, though, and the prices are very reasonable. I guess I just don't understand how such a forgettable cafe can exist (and seemingly thrive) in a suburb filled with such a huge number of very high standard establishments.

A nearly hourlong wait for food that was merely ok when it came, barely an apology but simply an explanation that they're full, and generally impersonal service, altho the owner was friendly. On our 'not going back to' list.

My 'go to' breakfast spot. Cafe Martini is the very embodiment of the relaxed Newtown/Erskineville lifestyle but without pretentiousness that drags down many good venues in the area. I often stop in for breakfast where the food is very good. Martini is not really a bar in the classic sense but I do love to drop in for a drink later in the day and enjoy the colourful musings of the proprietor Martin. Martin makes this place. He is the friendly, unassuming guy that we associate with Newtown of 20 years ago and will have chat and laugh with anyone - does not matter if you are rich or poor, left or right, gay or straight, easy going or uptight - Martin will make you feel at home and feel like a local.

This is a venue with so much potential, but I'm disappointed to say that both the food and the service was well below par. I ordered the hot cakes. When they arrived they were 5mm tall and no ricotta to be seen. They tasted as unappetising as they looked. The service was dismal. Waited fifteen minutes for an ashtray, 45 minutes for our food - which came out 10 minutes apart with no cutlery. Had to ask the waitress for some, didn't bother asking for table salt or pepper because we didn't think it would ever come. The only saving grace of our trip with the delightful and enthusiastic manager who greeted us. Would be the only reason I would consider returning.
DG
I've been sitting here for well over an hour just waiting for peanut butter toast. I have had to ask 5 times over the course of 45 minutes just to get a juice. Avoid at all costs!

Mr Hangover.. I've been going to Martinis for 8 years. I used to live next door on upstairs, moved far away, came back local again, then moved close again!! No matter where I've gone, Martinis has been my one constant cafe of choice, and I've introduced many new fans along the way.

The vibe is tops, the service is friendly, the music is always great and the food is constantly satisfying. The Meat monstro with a hangover is perfect.

Make sure you go out the back for the little courtyard, that's where the magic happens.

The addition of a Sat night bar along with the tunes, food and funk is just what the place needed. I couldn't recommend Martinis enough.

Tony.

Bad service, average food. Had my first visit to cafe martini today. 4 friends and I went in for a late breakfast. The first woman who served us was very friendly and affable while taking our coffee and food orders. She also returned with the coffees, average wait time for them and they were all pretty good. The problems began once breakfast started. A different waitress brought out the dishes - everyone got their dishes except me. A couple of them were missing hash browns that were added on to the order. A friend who ordered shoestring fries got his bowl and the fries were not even lukewarm - I'm not exaggerating, they were actually cold.

My friends began eating and after 10 minutes we were all wondering where my food was, so one of my friends hailed down the waitress that brought out the food, letting her know I was still waiting. She gave him a harsh/weird look and walked back to the kitchen. After another 5 minute wait, my food was brought out, so I can only assume it was sitting there for a while because it was also just lukewarm. The meal was missing the hash browns I ordered and I let the waitress know, once again she barely acknowledged us/me and did not smile or apologise.

Well, the hash browns never showed up, and as I sat there eating my meal I could see the waitress standing around a group of patrons that she clearly was friends with, eating their fries and just generally ignoring all the other tables. She walked past our table multiple times without even looking at us so I assume she just... forgot that she was supposed to bring out more food? There was no point in asking for the hash browns again because by then everyone had finished their meals (myself included)/was ready to leave and I really didn't want to deal with the waitress anymore.

I get the whole 'casual cafe' culture as I live in Melbourne (was visiting to see family and friends) but no matter how casual a cafe is, waitresses should be kind and not surly and should make sure they are attentive to simple customer requests and needs. It's pretty basic stuff.

Not a place to enjoy your time. Not a one that stands out.
Didn't like the environment, conjusted.
Price seems little bit higher compared to other neighbour restaurants.

Newtown Twist. This cafe has the potential to be a Newtown Favourite. If they sort out the staffing situation it could possibly make up for how long it takes you to get servied. Even if it was an order at the counter system it may actually work. The food was ok. I love love love the little courtyard nestled out the back of this undiscovered gem.

Never goona go there. We have been there last Saturday. We ordered three coffees and foods. I think the owner was making coffee. Anyway that was the worst coffee we have ever had. He should learn how to make a coffee before running the shop. And the food came after almost an hour. And the food was crap. We ended up spending almost $100 and walked away with empty stomach. And the service was also bad. Anyway we never gonna go back there. Really disappointed.
Bella
Yum. Friendly service, yummy food.

One hour wait for food and not worth it. We arrived late morning for brunch and after waiting about 10-15 minutes to even order coffee we then waited over an hour for the food to come out. On arrival, the bircher muesli was terrible having not been soaked long enough and of poor taste - I was informed it had been soaked for 1/2 an hour when I sent it back, not the overnight as prescribed by all good recipes.

On leaving, I was horrified when looking at the filthy coffee machine, the milk frother was caked in milk and the top of machine yuk! I'm surprised this place has made 10 years.

On a positive note, the waitress was great but was obviously in damage control with a slow kitchen, poor food and patrons who were walking out because of the wait times. I won't go back.
Russell Bunn
Awesome place to stop for a cocktail or drink. Staff were friendly, music is funky and chilled and the cocktails were supremely drinkable! The free popcorn is a lovely touch but the drinks alone is worth a visit.
Jules Andrews
This place has the lot - the coffee, the food, the pumpkin, the chops. (If you know what I mean).

Three thumbs up.
Melissa Joan
Love it. I always come here for Breakfast and a little comedy from Martin just watched the kiwi thing im like that crazy guy looks familiar!!!! what a dood.

Martini is a Marvel. A friend took me here for Brunch recently, loved it. A selection of different things to try on the menu, and the service was what I'd expect in this location and on a weekend. Some would possibly say slow, I just thought it was laid back. My suggestion when you go here, don't go when you could eat the person beside you if you have to wait one minute longer, go when you have the time to enjoy it, make it an experience and enjoy yourself in a relaxed way. It's busy and noisy and people are there to enjoy the company of friends.
Yep i'll taken mine both shaken and stirred thanks :)
Daniel Cheetham
Went there for breakfast, single waitress on gives us menus and we order coffee, to be told coffees aren't available because she doesn't know how to work the machine and boss isn't in, doesn't know when he will be and his phone is off. Who ever heard of someone working in a cafe who couldn't make coffee? We don't bother trying it again.

Amazing Atmosphere. The daily indecision concerning which of King Street's many cafes to reside at, I've found myself almost always returning to Martini.
The staff are friendly, the owner is particularly welcoming, and the courtyard is delightful at all times of day and night.
The menu is one of the best I have seen at any cafe, with large portions and many vego options.
The venue is now licensed so its now a good place to enjoy a cold beer in the summer.

I would recommend Martini to anyone.
Karen Smith
Courtyard is beautiful ESP at night great cocktails good food upstairs is a great chill out space with kids good toys relaxed happy staff
Alexander Piriz
Atmosphere is nice, typical of new town, coffee is not bad but when I ordered the bacon and scrambled eggs on toast the bacon was very salty and burnt and the scrambled eggs need to be scrambled more, presentation is crap, if they fix their food I would come back otherwise no way
Kat D Lux
Best upstairs space. Thanks for a great space. the owner makes you smile every time.

Casual Brekkie. There's a reason this place has survived in the tough Newtown cafe scene for so long. When you walk in, it is like you have walked into a friend of a friend's living room. The food is very decent, with large and generous serves for very modest prices. Can't go past the Monstro for a good feed, and only the biggest glutton could walk away without being stuffed to the brim. Service can be a bit spotty when they're busy, but the owner is always obliging.

Now it's not going to win any interior design awards or get a michelin hat, but the place is cheery, welcoming and the perfect place for a lazy morning or afternoon. Come here for a good feed, not fine dining.
Madam Wu
Trusted local. This place has been here a long time for a reason - it offers an extensive breakfast and lunch menu with at least 15 options for each, decent but not great coffee, good value and the owner/manager (who is also the barista) greets you with a smile and a hearty thanks at the end. The food may not be gourmet (canned baked beans for example) but it's freshly prepared, fast and has some great seasonal specials.
Kkyriacou
THUMBS DOWN. Went there because I read about the playroom upstairs and wanted somewhere child friendly to meet friends. The playroom and seating area upstairs were FILTHY. There were lots of food scraps on the floor. Piles of dirty plates on the tables that were not cleared away. All of the toys were broken and dirty. We could not bring ourselves to eat in this setting. Coffee was fine but the atmosphere left a very bad taste. Would not recommend to anyone.
Mikey
I can't say for sure, but the beans seemed to be from a can. They certainly weren't very nice. Also, the bread wasn't toasted enough so it fell into a mushy mess with the eggs and other stuff on it. The roasted mushroom was so leathery, it was difficult to cut. The place looks cute but the food's not up to scratch.
Danno Mammo
Danno. Meat monstro, greasy but perfect after that big night out, don't be mistaken it is by far the biggest big breaky out there! good on ya martini!

Newtown Institution. Martini has been around for more than a decade...which is more than you can say about many of Sydney's cafe scene. And once you've been it's easy to work out why it's a Newtown institution. Run by enigmatic owner Martini, the place is a non-nonsense place to get one of the best coffees and best value meals in Sydney. Breakfast menu is available all day and the portions are generous and delicious. If you've got an appetite - look no further than the Monstro. Vegetarians options are to be enjoyed by all. But the BLT is one of Sydney's best. Try the salmon stack and corn fritters. Very kid friendly menu and the entire upstairs is a mums and bubs haven.
Michelle Donnelly
Small but busy cafe. It has the kind of menu where you want one of everything. Vegetarian meals as enticing as the meat dishes. Personalized and friendly service even though busy. Will go back for seconds soon.
Heneedsfood
Cafe Martini is a staple for many locals wanting some no-fuss hearty food and a decent cup of coffee. The menu, both breakfast & lunch, has a great selection where you just want to try more than one dish. There's a nice courtyard out the back in the fresh air & sunshine (just sit upwind of the smokers). Try to get the table under the olive tree at the rear, its the best spot.
