Review Newtown Thai - Newtown

Gaia
Friendly customer service. Tasty food. only tofu and veggies for vegetarians, not fake meat options. Big portion and not expensive. It lacks the 'fancyness' of other places in Newtown. But who cares: I just want great Thai food and I got it. Definitely coming back.

Came here with some friends because of an EatClub deal. Really surprised by the mixed reviews because all of our food was fantastic and far better than expected, despite their current lack of staff due to covid. We had spring rolls, satay chicken, tofu green curry, pad Thai and crispy pork with Chinese broccoli and everything was delicious, fresh and tasty and the prices very reasonable, even without the deal. Would definitely come here again over other places I’ve tried in the area. Thanks for a great meal :)

One star. Terrible food. Tom yum soup tasteless . Stir veg tasteless (or should I say very sweet) basil chili pork bad- I can’t cook but I think I can cook better than this restaurant. Used to be nice many years ago. Now FAIL! Will never come back again! Don’t eat here!

Nice beef noodle soup, reasonable price with high quality beef slices, yummy boat noodles soup.

Food was cold and sweet ! We asked for spicy . Tom yam was like warm but good and fresh prawns , the pork , noodle and chicken was bad . Take your money to the Mexican food beside which is cheaper and better.

This casual eatery cannot be beat for value! $8 lunch specials which are seriously yummy! Yellow chicken curry, Pad Thai, Pad See Ew and fried rice are very similar to the taste you will get in Thailand. Get your meal as a combo with a spring roll, curry puff and can of coke for $11.9 total and you will walk out very happy!

This is my first favourite Thai places in town! Can never go past the 7 dollar lunch specials. Generous servings, authentic Thai flavours, fast and friendly service, great food. Could eat here every day.

Always good to eat in Newton Thai restaurant. Authentic Thai food and the staff always friendly.

We had a desire for some good wholesome food and walked around Newtown and just went in here on a whim. We weren't disappointed by the amazing Thai fare on offer. Their Satay chicken skewers had a rich and crunchy peanut texture and were creamy and delightful. The fish cakes retained their shape well and were delicious as well. I had their Salmon green curry and the Salmon was cooked perfectly with a lovely thin crispy skin layer glistening amidst the curry. It just added a great depth to the veggies in the green curry and it worked well. My partner's prawn Pad Thai noodles were great too. The tables are a bit crowded but it makes for a nice and cosy ambience. Overall one of the better Thai places I've been to in Sydney.

Ordered the beef pad Thai here and the lemon lime bitter drink. If you like your pad Thai with more soy sauce you’ll like this place. I personally prefer my pad Thai a little sweeter but it tasted fine and came out fast. Service was good.

Always been a favourite Thai restaurant to order delivery dinner from. The average price of dishes are between $10 and $12 and the portions are generous even for the cheap price. Their food is authentic and the taste is always consistent. I love their pad see ew, lard na pork (like pad see ew but drenched in a thick sauce yum!) and bbq pork. Their Tom yum soup is super delicious but can be spicy but I wouldn’t change it!

Could only taste salt! Wasn’t flavourful at all, same goes to the jungle curry, ordered duck and there was only 4 pieces...? The rest were vegetables. Pad Thai was just alright the last time I tried (too much ketchup) , maybe I picked the wrong dishes this time round? Idk.... but I wouldn’t be coming back again.

We dined here recently after not going back to Newtown Thai for over a year (as we had previously) encountered terrible, arrogant service and the food was was very average. Shame as nothing has changed.<br/>We decided to try it again as we heard it changed hands (NOT). I ordered a beef salad for lunch, my husband a noodle dish of some sort (which came with mainly all noodles, no egg and hardly any vegetables or chicken, he said it was very bland/ordinary). When my order arrived I had a plate full of spinach leaves and a little bit of tough beef.To make matters worse as I was tucking in, I hear a crunch in my mouth and thought 'what was that"<br/>To be astonishment I removed  2 clear small fragments/chips (that looked like and crunched like glass) from my mouth that came out of the salad. I decided I did not want to eat anymore salad and I asked the girl/waitress for a new one and explained the situation. She looked at us blankly as if we had placed the 2 clear tiny /fragments chips on the plate and rudely and roughly took the plate away without any apologizes or explanations. We were shocked at her lack of interest in helping us and concern, she treated us like we put them there and was incredibly rude to us. She then returned 10-15 minutes with another even smaller beef salad (around 6 small pieces of beef) and dumped the salad plate roughly on the table and walked off.  Again,no apology, explanation, nothing.<br/>Disgusting, both the lunch quality, quantity and attitude of service.<br/>Also when we first ordered, one of the preparation girls was eating her own personal lunch over the food she was preparing. AS soon as she saw us  she quickly hid her food with her mouth full of food and turned away not for us to see her eat.<br/>I have made a formal complaint to the Local Council and Health Authorities and they will inspect the premises,<br/>If you want rude, arrogant customer service and poor quality and quantity of food, Then go to Newtown Thai, its disgusting and just plain unhygienic, not safe and totally unfriendly service especially if you were to complain.. NEVER AGAIN.

We ordered beef curry and pad thai. I think it's okay. The beef is soft, a little bit thick. A little bit unfresh but i can accept. The curry is watery, not so salty. The service is excellent. Appreciate it.

A casual Thai restaurant on King st. The restaurant is pretty small and half of its space is used for the kitchen. So there might be some smell of smoke in the restaurant during busy hours.<br/><br/>The restaurant has lunch specials, which costs $8. However, we came here for dinner. And we 3 ordered 3 dishes, which is just right enough.<br/>{Red curry} A bit spicy. I would expect the curry to be thicker. It's more like a soup than curry.<br/>{Garlic & Pepper Sauce} uses pretty the same vegetables as the red curry.<br/>{Thai Fried Rice} is the best dish among the three. The rice smells pretty good and is neither too hard nor too soft.<br/><br/>The staff are busy and the seating is a bit narrow.

i love this place. The poor wait staff can be run off their feet sometimes but they'll always get to you. I go for lunch often and well it's cheap and quick. Perfect 'duck in-duck-out' lunch'. The cook is also accommodating if you make request (I generally ask them to lay off on the oil as they tend to use a lot). I've paid a lot more for Thai and found it far less tasty than Newtown Thai. It fits in well with newtown and I'll keep going back.
Newtown Local
Have been getting the lunchtime special for years has never let me down .Fast and efficient for takeaway or eat-in. Good choice for vegetarians .

Very approachable, close from where I usually am at uni. It's a great place to have pad thai's and other thai dishes, but I usually just get the same thing every time I go.

Newtown Thai is a nondescript corner restaurant on King Street which serves a range of the usual Thai cuisine. The simple and unassuming restaurant proffers great service and decent food (certainly better than the nearby Pothong, Thai La Ong and Alice) but lacks the authenticity which you can find along street markets in Bangkok.<br/><br/>The Pad Thai Prawn was decent - Fresh prawns were used rather than bleached ones. However, the bean sprouts were probably too raw and the pad Thai lacks wok hei or stir-fry flavour. The fried chicken wings, on the other hand, is juicy and succulent. Marinated with simple salt and pepper, the chicken wings were surprisingly flavourful and delectable.

One of the best places to have authentic Thai Food.Located in the heart of the Newtown this place can give you all sorts of varieties u prefer in Thai Food in affordable prices.Very friendly staff .Overall a nice place to enjoy your lunch

Been here many times with colleagues. It is not the best Thai I had but certainly good for the price. 7 dollars lunch special. The menu is the same as most Sydney Thai. Chilli basil fried rice has probably the biggest serving among all.

Had the stir fried vegetables and chicken with rice lunch special for $7. Good value.<br/><br/>The service was uncomfortable. Yes, I understand it was busy at lunch time, but the following was unacceptable. Having to ask for menus ourselves, the waiter forgetting to bring menus to the table after asking, and having to poach the menus ourselves off another table, was not a good start. <br/>We could not get the waiter here to order our food for at least 5 mins. I saw others walking to the counter to order since the waiter asked 'have here or takeaway' to two people. When I went up, I was told to go and sit down at my table, right after a dine in customer had been served. When the waiter finally came, she was extremely rushed, impatient and overly loud.<br/>All this can certainly be the result of there being only one waiter attending to the tables, cashier, phone orders and sometimes table clearing at the same time. Should hire an extra waiter or two.<br/><br/>Food was ok, but it didnt have the aromatic zing of the other thai places on the same road.<br/><br/>Overall I came here expecting this place to be better than the others, because I have heard good things about it, but I left disappointed.<br/><br/>Will be going to other Thai places on King Street.

Enjoyed a great cheap meal here, good food, good service and good prices, definitely recommend if you are in the area and looking for a nice Thai meal.

Newtown Thai has been around for a long time. I remember coming here when I was a student for a nice thai meal for a for value price. It's lasted the test of time and is still serving a decent thai lunch - I love a good thick rice noodle in a pad see ewe.  It can get very busy with local students. I'd def come here more often if I was a local.

Came on a Saturday night and it was packed, which is always a good sign. I got a beef massaman curry which was excellent. Everything on the menu was affordable, and with it being a BYO, it made it a pretty cheap night out. Would definitely come back again!
Simply Starving
Classic Thai BYO restaurant on King Street. Good food, fast service and vibrant atmosphere. The chicken satay was the highlight - fresh, delicious and full of flavour! The beef massaman curry was also really tasty.

Very unpleasant ambience and very unfriendly customer service. ...they seem busy but no concentration on their customers...will not recommended to any of my friends

Newtown Thai does very good curries. They are thick and fragrant. I would highly recommend their yellow and green curries.
The Pickled Cumquat
I can highly recommend this restaurant, great food, good service and generous servings.

If you just want a good simple Thai meal, this is where it’s at. The pad thai is the perfect balance of sweet and savoury, the pad see ew (no photo, sorry) is my favourite and the curries all hit the spot. And the garlic pepper stir fry! Awesome.

Do not try the beef larb. This dish was the worst dish I've eaten at a Thai restaurant. It was gritty - there was ingredient that was very grainy. The beef was all sinewy and there was no sauce. We couldn't eat it. Awful.

Had a very unpleasant experience. Firstly it were lunch time I decided to try newtown thai over my usual place, I had gotten the basil chilli chicken and had it for take away for I had to go work. Anyhow I ate it and it was ok I mean nothing special tasted bland. But what happened next was that i ended up at the hospital... not sure if it was the thai although it was the only thing I ate (doctor also suggested it were due to the the thai), but yeah horrible experience. 3 out of 10, Bland and not fresh.

Disappointing for Newtown. I went to Newtown Thai for dinner and had the Jungle curry. The flavour was hollow with no counterpoint to the pepper. My friend had the garlic and pepper beef and the flavour was also uninteresting.<br/><br/>On the positive side, the servings were large, the food was fresh, the service was fast and the price was reasonable.<br/><br/>With so many other Thai restaurants in Newtown the competition is tough. This experience was below the average for the area.
THEJUGERNAUTS
The foods cooked fresh (reheated? Nah). Its an open kitchen, you can see and hear them cooking the food. This is in response to the guy above.<br/><br/>One of my favourite Thai eateries in Newtown, great value lunches. The $7 lunch specials can't be beat. Try the tom yum fried rice. Yum!!! Fresh, hot and yummy. We love them<br/><br/>There seems to be a bunch of anti venue criticism (attack story w glass bottle?) lol

No, no, no!! Awful place. This place sucks! The food was reheated s**t, the staff rude and most of all the owner was downright unwelcoming. Don't bother, go to Infuzions at Cammeray instead

TERRIBLE FOOD. Food here was terrible. Cold and unpalatable. Witnessed the owner act aggressive towards a diner who did not like the meal as well. After seeing that and the lack of quality of the food, won't be recommending the place to anyone. Saw the owner take a 2 litre glass bottle full of water threatening to attack the diner. Who runs this place? The Asian mafia? Geez

Disgusted with the food and service. The food was obviously just reheated as it came out 2 minutes after ordering. Will not be coming back to this terrible place.
Msmercury
WORST THAI RESTAURANT EVER!!!. This is the worst Thai I have ever eaten. The food was served cold and not fresh. It was just reheated. The owner was rude, the service shabby. I will not go back there. Better to go down the road to Thai la Ong.

So. Bad.. Quite shocked at just how bad our meal was. Overcooked rice, burnt fried entrees, and the prawn curry had a strange odor to it, which, upon having a few mouthfuls, I found to be completely off-putting. Left hungry.

Best value for money Thai in Newtown! I always order the barbecue pork from this place and it's ALWAYS good. It's got a sweet tangy taste to it which goes perfectly well with their fried rice.<br/><br/>Other items to look out for are the Hokkien Noodles, Yellow Curry, and the classic Oyster sauce (with your choice of meat).<br/><br/>The only real bummer is the noise: as with most restos in Newtown, it gets quite loud and busy on Saturday evenings.

Where students and spendthrifts can rejoice. A very reliable favourite that takes me back to my student days. What is a cheap Thai lunch at Newtown Thai was high-end dining for me back when I was 19! But it is still a very good thing here, for students and non-students alike. Three of us shared two dishes for lunch, we walked out the door very satisfied having only spent $6 each. Bargain.
Serabella09
Used to be great this place but since the new owners have taken over its gone down hill with a waitress even being snide about bringing an extra plate over since the portions are too big for one and we wished to share the meal. It's never been an issue in the past with the waitresses always willing to accommodate. <br/><br/>Also said waitress flirted aggressively with male customers inappropriately touching and caressing two male professionals when they went up to pay. Off putting for what used to be a well run establishment with great food now a shadow of its former self. Rude service is off putting no matter how good the food is - try Newtown Thai 2 just down the road and the service is much better. A loss for king street.
CafeChick
Great for lunch. Still one of the cheapest & best for Thai food!

Food baby. Had the pad thai for lunch, and it was delicious! Full of flavour and aroma, and for $7 a plate you get a huge serving :)

Hunger savers!. Recently we went to this place (after a TERRIBLE experience across the road at the Newtown hotel) and though they were 20mins from closing they accommodated myself and my 8 friends happily. <br/>The food came so fast (thank god cause we were starving!) and it was fantastic! I'm very picky with my meats, but theirs were lean and fresh. The flavours were awesome and very reasonably priced.<br/>The service should also be mentioned; We had explained what had happened to us across the road and they stayed open just for us to finish our meals at our leisure. They closed up around us and we paid in advance (so they could finalize everything) but not once were we disturbed. It was the best end to a crap start of a night!<br/>Its BYO and the food is great! Definitely going again!<br/>I wouldve posted a pic, but the food didnt stay on the plate long ;P

Good cheap Thai food. $6.50 lunch specials are great. Used to always get the tofu and vege Pad See Ew, but the 'new' owners have a fantastic 'House Noodles'.

Always quick service and good food

Just amazing... ALL the time! :)))

Went to this place for lunch yesterday and loved it! Food was delicious and very good value! Service wasnt the greatest! But the price was right! we ordered 2 entree's, 2 mains and a drink for under $30! big servings, will be going back!

Like being in thailand. The food here is extremely good, you can't go wrong. the flavors are traditional and spot on, it's quick, and very affordable. <br/><br/>the Pad Kee Mao is a must-have, and all of the curries are awesome! Also very good Tom Yum soup.

Amazing, Amazing, Amazing. This is amazing!!! Incredible food, no BYO charge - so fast, great service! The prices are so reasonable. Its not worth cooking.<br/><br/>This food is THE best! Red and Green curries are to die for.

We haven't had a better pad thai in Sydney.

A friendly place. A personal favourite of mine. Menu item 40 is a must.

Lunch time menu is great. I'll keep coming back. Yummy simple Thai food, lots of vege's! Just how I like it!

Great value meals for lunch, including weekends! The Pad Thai was a bit on the sweeter side, in fact it was too sweet for me. The fried rice was good, and the chicken chilli basil was excellent.
