Review Chinese Dumpling Master - Newtown

Love the energy here, it has a real family-run restaurant vibe. The lady hosting and talking orders is a little gem. We ordered the prawn dumplings, steam dim sum, special fried rice with chicken and black pepper beef, all were really good, dumplings were great. Next time might be a dumplings only visit to sample more dumplings! Indoor and outdoor dining and restaurant has no issue packing up leftovers to take home. Sizes are quite generous, that’s for sure. Street parking available along King Street, free for up to 2 hrs now courtesy of council which is great.

Sign of a good Asian restaurant is seeing how busy it gets during peak hour and this place hustles! Conveniently located across the road from Enmore Theatre this is our go-to place for dumplings when we are in the area for a show. Its a venue worth trying if you love "soupy dumplings" especially on a cold Winter's night. Well priced menu and they serve alcohol if you wish to have a drink or 5 with dinner, the restaurant isn't overly big so make sure you get in early as the queue can be extensive during peak dinner time. Overall a nice casual place to dine if you feel like Asian comfort food that offers family run business feels đź‘Ť

Delicious and well priced food. I always get the fried rice, XLB and pan fried dumplings. The eggplant pan fried dumplings are amazing. It gets quite packed at night even with a booking you might have to wait.. but worth it.

The indoor seating looks bright and clean. The staff is quick on their feet as they looked after the customers quite well. We ordered three dishes: 1. dumplings: you can choose the fillings and 3 ways of cooking (boiled, steamed or pan fried). My pan fried pork and chive dumplings came first and looked golden brown. The fillings inside were still juicy even though they were pan fried to make the crunchy bottom. Only downside was the skin too thick compared to the little fillings. 2. dim sim is packed with lots of pork and prawn, cooked to perfection and finished with some hot sauce. However I found that the sauce is not as hot as I expected. I added extra chilli flakes oil to make it better. 3. xiao long bao - generous portions, the fillings were soupy, porky and steaming hot. The skin is just at the right thickness and cooked to perfection so still has a chewy texture to it.

Yesterday was my birthday and my daughter and I want Chinese, firstly the service the lady was very pushy when I was browsing the menu then another came over demand I pay at the counter I had only been looking 60 seconds. The food very poor , nothing special about the special fried rice it had nothing in it and was dry also the honey chicken pieces were so small and some (alot ) had no chicken inside the batter and we also got the beef n broccoli and I couldn’t believe my eyes very expensive and not much of it the taste was way over done with soy . Overall 3 dishes cost $60 not much of it and the food was very sad quality . They stacked in the bag with the best looking dish on top just so we didn’t notice. Never going back there . And the prawn chips fresh from last week!!!

As a family of 9 we ordered many dishes & we were surprised that most of them were average if not below average. The one stand out was the pork pan fried dumplings. I guess after seeing so many good reviews plus a large line up outside it added to the disappointment 🥺

The food here is absolutely delicious! There was not one thing we ordered that we did not like. The noodles were oh soooo tasty and fresh. The service is a little bit strange though and decor is even stranger. Still a good experience, food makes up for the lack of service!

Really delicious dumpling and hand-made noodle in Newtown. My favourite dumpling place in Sydney. Service is fast and friendly, food is always delicious and fresh. The menu is comprehensive and it is worth popping in to look at the recommendations. Pan friend pork buns, pork and chive dumplings, hand pulled noodles, spicy fragrant noodles, peanut chicken and cucumber salad are our house favourites! If you’re eating solo, they do half serves of dumplings and also have a less expensive version of their stir fries if you pair with noodles or rice.

Fast and great service, the food is yummy and pricing is good. Depends on which day and time you go, but waiting time isn't too bad.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
When Chinese Noodle House opened a second store in Newtown a few years back, owners Susanna Chen and her husband/chef, John Sun, tweaked the business name to Chinese Dumpling Master. The dangling plastic grape vines, that are such a signature of their tiny Haymarket outlet, they brought over intact. Set in an Enmore Road shopfront that’s almost as tiny as their original restaurant, their new venue has the same slightly institutional feel. Despite some fancier mounted hexagonal graphics, they’re not afraid of using some good old sticky tape to whack handwritten table numbers onto the painted beige walls to help staff differentiate between tightly spaced tables. What the crowds flock here for though ain’t the ambience, it’s...

Food was delicious, affordable and place is clean.
The golden crispy eggplant was nice but i was surprised by the sweetness as it wasn’t suggested in the name of the dish. Maybe salt and pepper would be better next time.

Dumplings were juicy, generously portioned and not overly greasy.

Great value and service for delicious dumplings! We ordered an assortment of chilli wontons, soupy dumplings, pork and chive, and eggplant dumplings. We will be back!

Fried eggplant was delicious and crispy, also the soup dumplings were a good size and generous serve and didn't break in the steamer

I would go 5 stars if it was just dumplings! Must have dumplings in the town. I can have their Sichuan chilli dumplings every night. Their stir fries are good but not very great compared to their dumplings. I would go again to explore noodles soups.

I’ve been here multiple times and I’ve never been disappointed. Quality and just genuinely authentic and delicious dumplings and noodles. Must try’s: special braised eggplant, wanton with Sichuan chilli, xinjiang noodles and pork soup dumplings. Yum, yum, YUM!!!

Note: Unfortunately Zomato stopped giving 0.5* ... This restaurant would have been rated 3.5...

If you think you have seen a deja vu with this post, you can be forgiven. We reviewed a very similar Chinese restaurant that championed dumpling and also located in Newtown last month. Chinese Dumpling Master is located more on the Enmore side. The restaurant itself was quite small. You usually won’t miss it because there is always a queue to dine in at the restaurant.

The food isn't great. The dumplings are very oily, and the contents don't seem to be of the highest standards. The place is very crammed in a small space. Honestly, it's quite hard to actually get in and out without bumping into tables and people. Everything on the table feels dirty (soy sauce bottle, utensils, etc). The only redeeming qualities are the prices and the options available.

Great food with reasonable prices, love the dumplings, chilly wanton, eggplant and handmade noodles. Enjoy the food and fast service, not a place for long chatting.

Omg droool! Love this place. Best dumplings in Sydney! Would go back again and again. Worth the wait or get there early to avoid the rush! It’s an in and out place. The fried eggplant is the bomb.

Very busy on a Saturday evening. Was quite warm and air con wasn’t working too well. The vegetarian stir fry dishes were quite good , eggplant dumplings could be more flavorsome. Well priced and staff seemed a little stressed.

Relaxed little restaurant with friendly staff. Lots of takeaway orders going out for lunch! A friend and I tried the Prawn Dumplings, Spring Rolls, Black Bean Chicken and Black Pepper Beef.

Let’s start with the dumplings - YUM! Loved them, best of all I found they weren’t too sticky and the filling was very generous.

The Spring Rolls were ok, small traditional style but there was very little filling (or flavour really), and the sweet and sour sauce that was given as an accompaniment was the worst I have seen and had. Overly artificial, gelatinous, bright coral coloured and tasteless.

Our mains were pretty good, the Black Pepper Beef was prepared in an awesome velvety and rich sauce; which was of course laced with black pepper as the name suggests. I really enjoyed it, the Beef was sliced thin and extremely tender. The Black Bean Chicken was very tender also, the sauce had a nice tang and the portions were very generous for the price. My only criticism of the mains is that they only used green capsicum and onion for the veggie component. I would’ve enjoyed some carrot and broccoli thrown in, but it’s not that big a deal.

Over all, the Spring Rolls were the biggest disappointment but everything else was quite satisfying.

Rocked up to this restaurant on Enmore Road and didn’t expect too much considering the decor and menus. How looks can be deceiving! Service was super friendly and quick.

We weren’t too hungry so ordered Eggplant and a serve of Steamed Pork And Chives Dumpling. Normally don’t enjoy eggplant too much but was one of the few I did enjoy. It had a lovely crispy outside and soft middle. Covered in a sweet glaze, I would return for this dish. The plump dumplings weren’t too bad at all. It is very reasonably priced here and very good value.

Same menu as china town, just served on nicer plates! Still have my fav hand pulled noodle and all the dumplings and eggplant! BYO, quick service, menus given to look at/order while waiting- like in Chinatown. Welcome addition to enmore road!

Busy little place on Enmore road. We went on a weekend for dinner, so had to wait about 10 minutes for a table.
Once we got a table, ordering food was quite efficient. However, any service after that (for more drinks or more serviettes, etc) was difficult.

The menu style is very simple looking, but the food is great. The dumplings were juicy, great flavour and tasted freshly made. The spicy noodle dish was flavoursome (right about of spice) and the noodles also had that home made feel and texture to them. The noodles were ridiculously long which did make it difficult to share and eat.

The Fragrant Spicy Noodles are my new favourite thing!!! Hot, and chewy, and umami, and delicious. Staff were super welcoming, too, definitely going back, and bringing all my friends next time.

A spin off from the Haymarket cafe. Same great dumplings, same delicious braised eggplant, same grape vines on the walls. This fast paced, no frills dumpling bar is still great. Love the byo also

Good to have an authentic Chinese food store within walking distance from where we live. We only tried out zha jiang noodle and beef stir fry noodle. Noodle itself is not really chewy like hand made ones. Spicy sauce is tasty. Table is a bit small and it could be quite noisy sometimes. Also a bit pricy for the quality of food.

Excellent dumplings, we had pork soup and fried pork and chive. Very good value. Very fast and friendly service. Definately would recommend!!!

We've been waiting twenty years for a really, really good Chinese resto in our Enmore\Newtown neighbourhood. Then Chinese Dumpling Master appears on Enmore Road, complete with handmade noodles, plastic grapes on the ceiling and even beers in the fridge. It's a dream come true.Google tells us Chinese Dumpling Master is run by the folks from the ever-popular Chinese Noodle Restaurant in Haymarket, which explains why this place has been jam packed from day one. On our last visit on we were chuffed to see queues at Chinese Dumpling Master while Queen Chow up the road is desolate and unwelcoming for some locals wanting a casual Sunday night feed.

I've been a vegetarian for 10 years and ordered eggplant veg dumplings however they served us pork and chives dumplings...after realising I had eaten half of a pork dumpling, I pointed out that it was meat and they debated that it was vegetation...finally they corrected the order and brought out eggplant dumplings. The situation was dealt with badly and they were not very apologetic! Very rude! Will not be visiting again!!

A familiar Chinatown institution (Chinese Noodle House) opens on Enmore Road, Chinese Dumpling Master offers a simplified menu but retains their popular hand-made Xinjiang dumplings and buns. Sparsely decorated, the tiny venue is decorated with bright red stools and hanging paper leaves. Nonetheless, you can be sure of the crowds during weekends and must be prepared to wait for 15-30 minutes.

Unlike their flagship store in Haymarket, service was visibly awkward and erratic. At the Haymarket outlet, a service staff would approach you and note down your name or/and special requests. Here, you have to order your food while queuing, before you are given a number. There were a few confused diners.

I tried their popular dumplings, minced meat noodles and spring rolls. The juicy and succulent dumplings were delectable and some portions of the thick dumpling skin was uncooked and raw. The spring rolls were excessively fried and tasted hard. Last but not least, the noodles probably saved the day. It tasted as good as the ones at Haymarket. I would probably go back to their Haymarket outlet in the future.

Really loved this homely place. It had the classics at a really good price. Probably the best dumpling place in newtown if you're hankering for a cheap eat! Great service and quick food delivery didn't go unnoticed.
