Im not sure if this restaurant has changed chefs or owners in the past year because i found my steamed pork and chive dumplings to be cooked really well. I didn't need to use any soy sauce either because they were so full of flavour. The decor is quite plain.
Panfried dumplings and coca. What a wonderful requiem. In Aug, only $4 for 15 dumplings, that is the simplest happiness for students. Regrets for I forgetting taking photoes.
So delicious. Great food and lovely service! Soupy pork buns could be a little bit more delicate. But the crunchy pricy prawns are amazing, as are the pan fried pork dumplings.
Fun little place I will continue to return to.
Such a fun Shanghainese place on King Street with an open view to the kitchen where you can watch the workstations of the handmade dumplings!
We had the PAN FRIED PORK dumplings and BOILED PORK CHIVE DUMPLINGS, XIAO LONG BAO (Pork with soup inside) and PORK WONTON SOUP! I think the freshness in their creation on the spot and cooking added to the flavour which we alternated with Soy Sauce and Chilli.
For mains we had the DUCK FRIED RICE which was elegantly served in an angled bowl with side salad and had a superb smokiness from the wok that sets the tone of the legendary Shanghai-Style cooking.
Mains are reasonably priced between $15-20 and they also do half portions if you're a smaller group, however my party of 6 was quite pleased with the serves.
The SWEET & SOUR was meaty, this is something I'm always weary of as many places over batter their meat but here, the coating is just right letting the sauce sing its flavours to your hungry pallette. The SALT & PEPPER CALAMARI in Shanghai terms means its topped with fresh shallots and chillis giving you options for an extra kick which works well when mixed through with a bit of boiled rice.
The SICHUAN SPICY BEEF is an essential dish in this regional cooking of Chinese. Beef is one of the prominent proteins in Sichuan cooking, and the authentic numbing fires you would normally expect in this dish are perfectly translated to the local tastebuds which was perfect for a post-training pigout. If you're daring enough, go for the KUNG PAO CHICKEN – that's where you'll get the spice you're looking for if you can take it! Beautiful chicken thigh that has absorbed the peanut chilli flavours of the sauce base! Not usually a fan of this dish having had it at many other places – but really enjoyed this interpretation!!! To balance things out, we brought in the sweetness of the MONGOLIAN LAMB which, like the beef is served off a hotplate where the dish introduced to you with its sizzle and dispersing aromas.
Cooking times were quite fast for 5 mains, 4 dumpling dishes that were hand made to order and the service was friendly and efficient. Would definitely come back here as its in a central spot in King Street with a great view, lots of life and the feature wall would be the view to the kitchen with windows to the dumpling station. In terms of value our group of 7 payed approx $26 (including 3 serves of rice and San Choy Bow) each for the above which was more than plenty as fiod portions Awesome cute little place and superb delivery of Shanghai flavours to Newtown!!!
This restaurant is located on King Street. Enter and choose a seat before going up to the counter to order your food and make payment. They were friendly and took the order quickly. You can collect your own crockery and cutlery as well as water from the table near the counter. Soy sauce/vinegar is available on the tables.
I ordered Xiao Long Bao (pork dumpling with soup inside) and Duck Fried Rice With Egg. The dumplings had a nice flavour and the soup was good inside. The fried rice seemed to have more cucumber and vegetables and only a little bit of duck. It was okay but nothing special.
This place is a homely favourite; welcoming staff, great food and quick turn around. It's cheap too!
Just one of those places you go when you want good, comforting and filling food but don't wanna think too much about what to eat.

A good solid feed for a good sensible price. This institution has been around for a while and has built up a cult following and quite rightly so.
Food is always made fresh to order with fast efficiency. Service could be a little better

Awesome soul satisfying & the chilli eggplant was moorish you could not stop eating it, get the rice to mop up the rice. Ingredients super fresh. Service really quick will be back
Good place to stop off for a quick and easy lunch in Newtown. I wouldn't bother with the dumplings because the other dishes are simply delicious! The duck pancakes were fresh and full of flavour and the sweet and sour pork was an absolute hit! The staff are friendly and service is fast.
Came to dumpling hut for lunch. We were seated immediately, with water on the table which was greatly appreciated as it was such a hot day. I was in a group of 4 and we were starving so ordered quite a lot. My favourite dishes were the lettuce cups, sweet and sour pork and the Peking duck pancakes. The dumplings were good but the pork could have been more flavoursome. This is the perfect spot for a quick bite and if you're craving Chinese food.
I know it's called dumpling hut, but you seriously have to order as many non-dumpling dishes as you can, they're just so good!! My chop sticks kept leading me towards the sweet and sour pork, the salt and pepper calamari was divine and the duck pancake were delicious.
The dumplings weren't the standout for me, but they were still nice nonetheless.
Perfect place for a Chinese fix in Newtown.
Beef fried rice was pretty good, pan fried pork dumpling were a tiny bit under done and the steamed prawn and chicken shao mai were nice except for a few bits of cartilage, all and all a pretty decent meal. Would probably return.
I love this place! Quick service and the food is DELICIOUS. You can't go wrong with the their dumplings and their duck pancakes are a treat! I would definitely come back here! The staff were friendly too.
My FAVOURITE Dumpling place in Newtown if I want to cram a lot of food into my belly. There dumplings are cheap, full of flavour and the time from ordering to receiving is small! I can go in, pig out and pay in about 40 minutes. The service is decent but I watched one worker play on her iPhone when she wasn't busy. Overall, I recommend coming here if you want to be full with food.
These are INCREDIBLE! These Xiao Long Bao are filled with broth. LeeLoo has no idea how they make these but they are done superbly. The broth is so plentiful and full of flavour. Can’t get enough of these. Dipping in some vinegar gives it an extra kick of flavour.
