Review Sydney Cebu Lechon - Newtown

Ella Chang
It's a very nice little restaurant and I love all the decor and atmosphere. We do love the food and portion wise was ok as well. The lechon was very tasty and juicy. The pork skewers were cooked to perfection. Love the sauce and smoky taste. However, I have to say the dishes are really overpriced. I do love everything from this restaurant but to be honest that I would think the price is between $13-16. If it wasn't so overpriced, I would love to visit again. But it's not so incredibly delicious for me to return for that price point.

Everything overpriced like a scam! $27.50 for about 10 pieces of no flavor chicken wings, dry and taste old. $27.50 for 5 sticks of pork! Even the signature dish is overpriced with $27.50! Menu has under 10 options and everything same price. I have never written any bad reviews about any restaurants before but I think I should warn people this time. Disappointed! Still can’t believe that fried chickens costs $27.50 and I couldn’t finish because it was super dry but my brother thinking about how expensive they are and finish them. Guys, everything here is not worth money at all, go anywhere else will be better. To the owner: you asked us once about how did we feel about the food and we said maybe later when we finish the meal. However, we didn't have chance to tell you the truth about food and pricing so I think google reviews will be the best way! I didn't know $27.50 for that chicken wings because of no photo in the menu. I am happy to pay 10 times more for the meal if it worth money but unfortunately, it was not at your restaurant. This is the first time I have tried the Philippines food and I don't think I will come back. So no need not welcome me from you. You were the lovely guy at that day but not today. Good luck for your business!

I have never had such great lechon in Sydney! The pork was juicy and skin was crispy! The pork wasn't smelly and it was well seasoned! The garlic rice is very buttery so it can get a bit heavy - I still love it. I recommend the original over the spicy lechon - chilli didn't really add much to something that is already so good! Get the veg - goes REALLY well with the lechon!

Pros: 🌟 I love the Lechon in this place. Erickson the guy who has been looking after us during our dining experience was superb! Definitely recommend this place for tasty Lechon in Sydney. And we also love the chicken adobo here, all time favourite. Cons: 💔Wish there was more options on the menu, it’s very limited. The lechon skin is not super crispy. Also, there are not much drinks available and I find the only filipino drink option (calamansi juice) is almost always sold out or N/A.

Starting off on a good note, this restaurant's decor was very cute and reminded me a lot of the Philippines. The service was fine, we were seated promptly according to our booking time and the wait for food and drinks were acceptable. Price-wise and portion-wise, not so good. We were well aware it would be good for one, so we one got portion of lechon and rice each. A bit surprised on the amount of lechon we were given, especially after looking at other images on Google reviews. Still understandable, these things happen. We considered ordering more food however given the high price and perceived portion sizes, opted not to. I'd give this place a fair 2.5 stars. Not good, not bad, just average.

Best Cebu Lechon in Sydney! Yes, it is quite salty because authentic cebu lechon is like that. The lechon skin is super crunchy!! Great with their butter garlic rice and atchara. The pinakbet and pork bbq were great too! It is pricey but it is understandable because it is hard to roast a whole pig. I would come back again for sure.

Today my family ate at Sydney Cebu Lechon. We were greeted by the owner and could truly feel an authentic Filipino ambience. We ordered the signature dish which brought memories of growing up in Cebu. For me it's all about the crackle and this place def delivered that crunchy feel. We also tried the pork skewers and kawali chicken thighs which was tasty served with mang tomas. Looking forward to enjoying this experience again.

If you are craving for Filipino food, Sydney Cebu Lechon have absolutely fantastic food! Not only they have the best boneless lechon, they also have the best Pinoy pork BBQ on sticks!! I have been ordering these for 5 consecutive years and every time, they deliver the best tasting, tender pork BBQs you can find in Sydney. This has been the family's favourite! Just recently, I have added pancit bihon in my list and goodness my visitors loved it too. Thanks Will for all these incredibly great tasting foods! I will definitely order again!

I was really craving sum pork spit roast but didn't have the time and patience to do it myself especially when it would cost $600 and 7hrs of work so i found Sydney Cebu Lechon online. I ordered the 7kg boneless lechon for a party and it was the best decision i made! It was juicy, flavorful and fulfilling. Thank u and will definitely be ordering from you again! All the best

We ordered for my Dad's 60th birthday and wow...the guests cannot stop raving about how delicious and scrumptious the lechon was - the softness of the meat, the crunchiness of the skin. Highly recommend...order yours today!

The nicest and easiest pork ive ever had. We had a small 2kg amount and it was so tastey. This style of pork is really nice. Perfectly salty, definitely not over the top. Whatever their seasoning is, its awesome! Will try again.

Absolutely delicious! You don't even need to add any sauce since it's packed with flavour. The meat is nice and tender with crackling cooked to perfection. Highly recommended, especially if you feel like putting some pork in your fork!

I got what I was expecting. The meat was moist and the crackling was crunchy some parts were a bit done but the overall package is faultless!

A few really interesting Filipino restaurants have popped up in Sydney in the last years and Cebu Lechon is one of them. I've been meaning to get here for ages, so was surprised on arriving that we remembered we'd dined in the same location, years ago, when it was a vegetarian Vietnamese place, one of those places with the mock meats. It's rather changed from that right now specialising in pork and lots of it. I was disappointed, I have to say, in the speciality of the house. It was fine, but the meat wasn't as tender as I thought it might be. However, to compensate, we thought the crispy bicol, crisy deep-fried (I think) pork belly pieces in a rich coconut curry was sensational. My god. It. was. good. Husband found the Pinakbet, the vegetable curry, strange, because of the punch of the shrimp paste; it wasn't my favourite but I thought it was interesting enough. Nice to see them busy on a Friday night in the time of COVID. I wish them all the best.

Hands down my favourite Newtown restaurant for both dining and takeaway. Consistently the best meat I’ve ever had, and their calamansi drink and ube shake are beyond delicious! Service and atmosphere is always super friendly.

With everyone having to get into delivery now, I had a chance to order some cebu lechon and it was worthwhile despite some faults. The pig was definitely overcooked but it was mostly good pig with nice subtle flavours plus some pickly sauces and garlic rice to flesh it out. The serve was fairly substantial but the in-store price seems to be $21.50 and you can get similar at Chinese BBQs for $15 or less.

Very disappointing experience. had such high hopes for this place given the great location. Pork was extremely dry and expensive for the serving size, not a traditional filipino experience. Hope they can get their act together as the area needs a place like this that's doing good food.

I am not Filipino but my wife is . This has to be the best Filipino food I have eaten in Australia and even Philippines. Staff are professional and informative. Highly recommended to both Filipino and Aussies wanting to try Pinoy food

Me and my friends dined here on the weekend, we have been looking for a restaurant that sells close to authentic lechon. This by far has topped the list. It is quite expensive for 200g of lechon and booking is recommended it seems like they serve lechon based on how many people book ( as we had added a extra person in a hour before booking time) when we arrived we were seated quite fast and ordered. It is pay at counter first when the waiter had come over he had advised he only had 2 servings of lechon left ( original booking ) which was shared between 3 people. Overall though food was really good !! Only improvement needed is more lechon !

Overpriced but food is as legit as the lechon in the Philippines itself. Could have more options even if I’m aware it’s the restaurant’s specialty. Makes sure to try/request for Mang Thomas if you see this review, a sweet gravy that is eaten well with lechon and loved by locals ✨

Sydney Cebu Lechon originally started as a catering lechon business supplying their famed charcoal roasted suckling pigs to the pork lovers of Sydney. The Mahusay family has been operating since 1991 and a few years ago opened a restaurant in Newtown. We start with Bbq pork skewers ($23.50), fat slices of pork belly glistening from the sweet and sticky glaze.

Summary: if you’re really craving a Pinoy-style pork roll, go for it. Otherwise, there are plenty of better options. First off, it’s not even a lechon (i.e. whole spit-roasted pig); it’s a pork roll. A Cebu-style lechon (as opposed to a Manila-style lechon) is supposed to be stuffed with more flavourings (“saltier” would be the common oversimplification).

My first encounter was at Tramsheds at a pop-up, before they opened the restaurant. They started serving food later than scheduled. Worse, the pork roll skin was very tough. Overall, it was so-so.

My first visit at their restaurant went better. The pork roll skin was now crunchy, easier to bite into. Still, the menu was very limited. They seem to be emulating Rey’s place’s one-page menu but none of the other options seem appetizing. If you want to focus on grilled dishes, there is no inasal for example. It’s not apparent what the theme of their one-page menu is supposed to be. Also, their “lechon” is inferior to Rey’s place because the flesh is not as soft and they don’t make their own sauce.

My last visit was a disaster. We made a reservation. They called us to request that our reservation be moved 10 minutes later than the original booking, we agreed. We showed up five minutes earlier than our revised reservation and they forced us into a shared table! Meanwhile, there was a free table for two by the window. We asked about it and they said that it was reserved. Well, we have a reservation too and we are here on time.

Having tasted their food twice already, I had no choice but to order something else other than pork roll. I asked for how many people the “humba” was, which I already knew was “for sharing”. The guy with the glasses, smugly kept repeating that it was “for sharing” as if I was an idiot. Yes, I know “for sharing” means for more than one. What I really wanted to know is for how many: two, three, four, 3 billion?

Just a quick note: I initially went for Chorizo de Cebu on their daily specials board but it was not available (it was circa 6:30pm). Again, their selection is very limited.

We were then served the “humba” which is a dish from the Visayas. I know this dish well. To our surprise, it was really just adobo with one piece of star anise. It was something anyone could have done easily, probably better.

I went to their restaurant a second time (i.e. my last visit) because TimeOut ranked them #1 Pinoy restaurant in Sydney. I’ve come to realise the reason behind this: it was reviewed by a non-Filipino. I suppose to them, a Pinoy-style pork roll could be a delicious novelty. For a Pinoy, it’s so-so.

Was super excited to come try this place and had planned months in advance. The restaurant is small and cozy which is fantastic! We made a booking for 7pm and we arrived just on time. It was incredibly disappointing to be told that we wouldn’t get a table for at least another 30min as “the booking before us came late and were now going overtime”. Another table had freed up but this was given to other customers who had no booking but were just waiting. There’s no point booking here as you won’t get a table since they require all customers to pay first before the food is served. Definitely a terrible first impression and there’s no way I’d come again.

My parents and I are originally from Cebu so we decided to come here to try it out. We ordered the Cebu lechon, the lechon kawali, pork bbq skewers and the lumpia. Everything was delicious! The service was friendly and very quick. Would go back next time I have a craving for filo food.

Came here on a Sunday and made a booking so didn’t have to wait. Pleasant customer service. The lechon and braso were my favorites. Just hope there was a little more to the menu or specials for the week. But overall experience was good.
Ramen Raff
Their signature Cebu lechon (charcoal roasted pig) is $18 for 200 grams and it comes with atsara (pickled papaya salad) and some vinegar soy blend sauce. The sauce is just there as an option but to be honest, the pork is already incredibly tasty on its own. The meat is tender, smoky, rich in notes of garlic and other spices, full of umami and very aromatic. The tiles of crisped crackling makes amazing shattering sounds with every bite.

Made the mistake of not trusting google reviews and following these reviews on Zomato. Came for takeaway during the day at 1pm for the Lechon. Amazed to find that they were already out of Lechon. For a place that is called Lechon Cebu, to run out of Lechon hardly one hour into service makes no sense. Very disappointed. Will not be wasting my time coming again.
Forking Around Sydney
Very tasty Filipino food, but it was surprising to see the desserts outshine the savoury dishes.

Both the lechon and blackboard special of tocino (Filipino bacon) were porky and delicious, but the simplistic presentation - especially the tocino - needs more work.

The ube cheesecake and frozen brazo however didn't need anything more as they were utterly delightful. Sweet, rich, gooey, and creamy, I would be happy to eat both daily!

The only other comment I have is with the service. While friendly and serviceable, I don't understand their practice of bringing out the rice to the table before the dishes. We had to ask for them to reheat the rice because they sat on our table for almost 10 minutes before our first main arrived.

Still, it's great to have a Filipino eatery in Newtown that serves very good food.

Great food and service by an amazing team!! The staff were very informative and helpful and made the experience pleasant. We arrived early around 6pm last Friday and was able to get a table for 4 before it got busy.

Finally it's here! In Newtown!

A must visit if you love filo food, their signature Lechon (Roast pork) is so juicy and tender.

The frozen Brazo Cupcake and the Ube Cheesecake are a must order as well. The ice cream wasn't my favourite since it has some artificial taste to it but overall a good feast.

Shame it opens on weekend only and it has about 20 seats so make sure you either book or come early! Otherwise you will wait for a while!

#asianfoodninja
