Review Monas Restaurant & Bar - Newtown

Great authentic Indonesian food, well presented and with friendly service. Mie goreng and martabak telur both excellent.

The food was good but the service disappointing. They served the entree and the main together and despite having a bar, there was no one to serve cocktails!!!!!

Friendly staff and lovely relaxing music (and still easy to talk to each other). I highly recommend the crispy skin salmon, which was cooked perfectly and delicately seasoned, with a mild satay sauce, stir fried greens, and coconut rice. Will be back here with more friends for a great meal.

Mona's is a 10 or so minute walk from Newtown station. There is seating for about 60 people. This was our first time with Indonesian foods.. The Martabak Telur was well received, something we will look at making at home. The spring rolls are large, as in 3 - 4cm across and 15cm long, all cut in half. Quite nice, but very oily as vegetables don't tend to soak up the oil as much as meat. The Rendang Beef was very nice. Tender and flavoursome. The Crispy Chicken was the only letdown. It was nice, but more bone than meat, so not a lot for two to try. The accompanying sambal was *very* different to any other sambal I've had. Worth the trip. One thing we did notice, our Optus connections (phone & WiFi) were both fine outside, but dead in the restaurant.

Sooo tasty!!!!!!!!!!! The service was great, very friendly staff Crispy fired whole fish was excellent. The tastes took me back to Bali, they even have Bintangs and they were cold!! We will be back 5 stars Thank you Monas

Just tried Mie goreng and this absolutely the winner, taste like Pad Thai with Indonesian touch, the Martabak telor is yummy too. Absolutely recommended, however I don’t really like their grilled fish. Definitely will comeback for the mie goreng

This is one of my favourite Indonesian restaurant. Service is top notch (thanks to Nana and Tiana for the great hospitality, really appreciate it during our visit) cocktails are delicious, amazing foods, plus the setting is quite romantic especially in the evening. I definitely recommend their chicken satay and fried snapper. Oh don't miss out their awesome avocado smoothie as well.

My friends and I (group of 10) went to this restaurant on Saturday night and absolutely loved it! From the atmosphere when you walk in to the welcoming staff who were so accommodating. The food was just great and the cocktails were the best in Sydney We would defiantly return to Monas in the near future!! Guys & gals you really won't be disappointed!!!

The ladies working there provided great service but the food didn’t meet my expectations. I came here with my family of four with a Cudo voucher for $150 worth of food for half price. However, with $150, I only ordered 5 dishes and an entree. The portions of the main dishes was tiny and insufficient. The food came out at room temperature and tasted like prepackaged microwave food. A lot of their menu isn’t available. My overall verdict is that service is 7/10 but the food is heavily overpriced and not worth it even with a Cudo voucher. Newtown has so many other places to eat.

Service was fairly good... food was tasty, probably slightly higher prices than you would of expect of Indonesian from say kensington area. Also a lot of selections were not available from the menu. But of what we had we enjoyed.

We came here the other night to attend a birthday dinner. Its our first time to dine in Newtown so was pretty excited what this Suburb could offer. Heard lots of awesome eats in this area. The place was dimly lit. Or maybe its just our table that was dimly lit. We sat at the corner near the wine rack. While waiting for our host, we ordered beer and cocktail. Can I just say I didn't enjoy the mojito at all? It was more of a crushed mint with a lime juice. I can't really taste the drink as my taste buds were overpowered by the taste of mint leaves.

The food was ordered by the host, so don't have much to say on that. Food verdict, the mee goreng was good. Mildly spicy which works well with the kids as well as the nasi goreng. I didn't try the fish, but husband said it was okay. The beef rendang was also good, not too spicy and it was so tender. I could eat the entire plate without blinking. Downside of the entire meal was the grilled chicken. It was raw. Even if it was dim in our table we could see the blood in the chicken. So we had it return to have it cook again.

All in all, the experience was okay. Food was good, service was acceptable but the parking in the area is just terrible. Perhaps the next time we visit Newtown, we should take the bus.
