Review Bakerman - Newtown

What a great find- open early on Saturday morning whilst I was on a stroll. Nice seating outdoors- and good food indoors for take away or dining there. The sign said under old management which must mean something to the locals. Great stop!

Watery coffee with cold eggs on soggy toast - the English backpacker server was very friendly and helpful and ...the best thing I could write about this place. The coffee tasted watery and burnt, the eggs were cold and there was water on the plate from the poached eggs making the toast soggy.

Good breakfast food and the outdoor seating is very pleasant, being a good distance from the road. Some nice vegetarian and gluten free options available.

Decided to give the cafe another chance with new owners. We were delighted to find the coffee was of high standard and the homemade pie was exceptional. Poached eggs on fresh Turkish bread companied with good service.

Terrible breakfast. Had the corn fritters they were grey, gritty and over cooked. Everyone's poached eggs were hard and the toast was even burnt. I didn't eat my meal and gave feedback, still got the bill for the full amount. When asked if the chef had got the feedback the waitress advised the response was "it was supposed to be like that". A real shame as it has been good on the other occasions we've been there.

Open early daily for breakfast. They're more commonly associated with breakfast and lunch, but sometimes open for dinner too - although you'd best call as it can vary day to day. Fantastic place to visit for a meal. You might think you're ordering something plain, but it'll surprise you. They bake many of their own items each day and you'll find cakes and pastries ready for dessert after your meal. Has its own loyalty card system (one point for each tea or coffee purchased), but if you forget your card they can look you up. The staff are friendly and will make time to come and speak with you if you stay long enough. If you're feeling playful, ask them to decide on a dessert for you - you can't go wrong.

Really terrible experience, which is a shame as the service was good. Ordered the 'pea blitz' - mushed up peas which had a very strange paste consistency and was too sweet. It had 4 dices of tomato and 2 hard poached eggs. It was a struggle to eat it. Definitely won't be coming back here, regretted paying the $16.

worse than mediocre. it's not just that there was no flair to the food we ate, but rather that the people making it are positively untalented at creating delicious and attractively presented food. the vegetarian eggs and acvocado were dry and flopped on a plate. the angus beef burger turned out to not be available (after 10 min wait), and the replacement pulled beef burger turned out to be a yucky grisly piece of steak that was cut up roughly, tasted boiled and sad not slow-cooked and pulled, and served on a dry plasticky stale bun. oh, and splattered tomato sauce on the plate and coffe splattered among other presentation problems.

I thought I would give Bakerman a second chance. Unfortunately they failed again. My friend ordered the Benedict with salmon, to be told 10 minutes later that they had run out. Strange at was very early morning. I ordered a rösti which was listed with rocket and a dab of Greek yoghurt. The rocket came in the form of spinach, and the yoghurt was missing too. The explanation I got was as that the chef had not been made aware of a change in the menu. Very odd. Sorry Bakerman, you really need to get your act together.

Very disappointing experience: cold coffees, 20 minute wait for a half warmed up pastry and another item was mixed up. Up your game folks...

Disgraceful. See pic, the birds nest quiche looks nothing like their website. I bought catering and this is how they presented it to me. I ordered a 7am pick up. At 7:20am, the condescending waitress told me they were working as fast as they can without speaking to the kitchen to speed things up. The breakfast service was appalling. Despite ordering first and having my food order sitting under the lamp first, The solo waitress there decided to serve up the next in line-2 granny's who the proceeded to chat and ask for everything under the sun. She then decided to chat to a local on the street before fetching my order. So my food sat there for nearly 10 mins before it was delivered to me. It was crap. Soggy and greasy. One slice of toast which wasn't toasted. How can this place survive with so many good places around
. It must be a front for drugs or something illegal. Never again!!!

As a local of Erskineville for the past 10 years I give this place a try every 2 to 3 years and every time I come away extremely disappointed. Never again!Ordered for lunch the schnitzel with chips. Schnitzel extremely dry and without taste, pretty sure due to it's uniform size it's pre manufactured and they just heat it up. String chips tasteless, and salt shaker empty. Coleslaw contained grated apple that had gone brown, probably out too long. Totally bland and uninspired. With so many new great cafes opening up in Erskineville I think this venue's days are numbered. I can only imagine it still remains busy because it's outdoor setting in the small plaza area

Used to be good but seems to have gone seriously downhill on the food. Coffee and beer are good but it's not the kind of place you go just for either.

Disappointed in Erskinville. Great location and outdoor area just let down but it's poor food. It was such a disappointment as I was really looking forward to my breakfast. The toast was more like warm bread, hash brown straight out of the frozen packet and even the lettuce garnish was brown and likely yesterdays. If your thinking of eating here I would keep walking and try another place. Would have rather eaten a McDonalds Breakie...... And I hate McDonalds!!!!

We’ve been going there for a fair while now, mostly for the pies, which are delicious. Flakey pastry, solid tasty insides, and always fresh. They also do amazing croissants, quiches, and a big variety of cakes/pastries for the sweeter toothed among you (I’m more into savoury stuff).

Food average. Tried this place for first time. Service and coffee was good. Our food was average at best. I ordered the corn fritters and I can't really find a positive thing to say about them. It was a crepe with a tin of corn thrown on top... Literally. I left most my food and considering the fairly expensive cost for tinned corn I'd only be back for takeaway coffee.

Great tapas. Really enjoyed the tapas menu with some beers one lovely summer evening. The Beetroot chips were the best, but all the options were great. And we had no problems with the service - all went smoothly.

I love this place. Shocked to see the reviews re service as I've been overly happy with it each time I've been to bakerman. Food off the menu is great. I've never tried the pastries but looking forward to doing so. Definitely give bakerman a try

I don't know why this place has such terrible reviews and a poor rating. It's actually quite good! Service is completely fine and food is tasty and reasonably priced. Milkshakes are great! Coffee isn't the best, but other than that I don't think it deserves to be rated so low. If you think Bakerman has bad service, just head up the road to Shenkin. You ain't seen nothing yet.

It could be done so well, but it just isn't. Service is a real let down and there's some attitude. Be prepared to be deflated.

Absolutely foul. What is so sad about reviews is that you are mainly compelled to write one when it is such a horrible experience. My boyfriend and I went on a Friday night. I've been meaning to go there for a while as it looks so cute. We found a table and had to beg for a wine list. We ordered the beer battered beet root with aioli. That was fine. The service was bad but the guy seemed to be getting along ok. Our dishes were not removed so when the mains came I had to clear the table for the waiter to allow him some room to place them down. We had ordered a barramundi on a bed of risotto and asparagus and a cream based pasta with seafood. The waiter said he would h
Get us spoons to eat but forgot . I got the feeling he couldn't be bothered. Now the food. OH.My.GOD. The barramundi had the flavour of at least 3 day old fish. The risotto was white. Why? It was at least 40% sour cream. I have never ever had anything like it. It looked like baby vomit and tasted like sour cream and Philadelphia cream cheese. Guys, I can't stress to you enough even at the foulest pubs I have never seen a risotto like it. The pasta was literally sour cream on fettuccini . There was a giant dob of the stuff on top. No herbs. It tasted so so so foul we left all of it and paid and left , went home and had a salad. Bakerman was one of the worst dining experiences this year. Yes the service was not great and at times completely non existent but the food was the real let down. We literally did not eat two of the main courses. The fact that not even an eyebrow was raised when the dishes were taken leaves me to believe that it is a pretty common occurrence . Do yourself a favour DO NOT GO THERE

Terrible service - sat and watched them walk past my meal which was sat on the kitchen counter waiting to be served for over 5 mins, whilst the cafe was completely empty! Overpriced and very average food. Do not recommend

How can you have a meal with bacon and ask, being vego, for spinach instead and be told its $4 extra! I asked for the owner to be reasonable and was told they are happy for me to build a breakfast at $4 an item which works out far more than buying it with the spinach in the first place.
I won't be coming back here! Terrible.

Always a good coffee served here, plus the array of pastries are quite tasty. Can get very busy on weekends though.

Only so so food but way overpriced for really small portions.....but it has lots of hipsters if you want to look like you with the cool kids

Ummm!!!. Liked the look of this place. Nice array of cakes, slices, breads & quiche( Not sure if these should be refrigerated though). Service??? What service. Just doesn't exist. Walked out after waiting way too long.

Nice location, slow service. Received a hot chocolate with dish washing power around the rim and recently my caesar was drowned in over tangy dressing.

Distasteful. Attended this cafe for breakfast on the weekend, found the service and standards of poor quality, and one particular staff member so rude that I left before eating. There are far more pleasant experinces to be had in the array of cafes available in Erskineville and Newtown. Won't be returning.
Chaconda
Inedible food. Poor customer service, very average coffee, and inedible food items.

Really nice food and wonderful service!

Has gone downhill since it's expansion.. I have gone to Bakerman since it's inception years ago. Anton, the owner is very friendly. The cakes and pies are very tasty, albeit overpriced. But why does Bakerman have such a small amount of bread which is not even baked there on offer?
Since Bakerman was expanded into a cafe style set up, the service has gone noticeably downhill and it's best to allow at least 20 minutes when ordering a takeaway coffee, as the service is quite slow and some of the staff seem confused and grumpy easily when it is busy.
When sitting in, I would recommend a coffee and pastry, but steer clear of the poor cafe meals they serve. They cost nearly doub;le what you'd expect to pay in similar cafes and the turkish bread/salad is limp and underwhelming. If you want a decent feed in a cafe, go to Shenkin up the road.

An excellent range of delicious things for breakfast. Great coffee and are soon to be open until 11pm. They seem to have nailed the niche in the village. Really recommend the sausage rolls (pastries look great too).

Another great cafe in Erko!!. My family & I have been going to the Bakerman now for about 2 years. It boasts a great location and has lots of shade. Its great to take the kids there as there is somewhere for them to run around a bit. They have a lovely assortment of cakes & breads and the staff are very friendly and happy to have a chat. You can sit there and watch the world go by, I went there on Sunday with my paper and it was so relaxing. They also have some seating inside. Last year they had a jazz band playing on the weekend which was awesome, I hope they do this again!! The meals are also good value. The only downside to the place is sometimes their tables seem a bit small to fit everything on if you have a few people with you but this is the only thing I can think of.

Cheese Delites. Hiya I am a cheese lover and enjoy going to Eveleigh Market and eating the delicious Organic Cheese there from Highland Organics stall - check it out. I have now found the feta available at Bakerman cafe. I have tried their delicious spinach and feta quiche and pies - really full of flavour and excellent. So give them a try. The coffee her is great as well and sitting outside in the square watching the locals is great. This cafe deserves 9 of 10 for service and great product.
I Live To Eat
Unpretentious Gourmet. This French/Lebanese bakery makes an amazing assortment of breads and pastries as well as great Aussie pies. The bacon n egg breakfast pie is a must followed by great coffee and Lebanese semolina cake. Great place to just sit outside in the village square n people watch.
