Review Dumpling King Chinese Restaurant - Newtown

Dylan Kroft
Yikes… Was really hoping to enjoy this place but now all I can recommend is stay away if you’re looking for something authentic, or even tasty for that matter. I had the hot & sour soup with dumplings. The dumplings were passable but chewy and bland but the soup—it’s frankly misleading to call this hot & sour soup. Have a quick google of what the soup should look like, then look at the photos here. This soup was basically just water + black vinegar. So disappointing 🥺

Love dumplings!!! Consistency with the taste and we love it. It can be busy at times but You have to be proactive and place your order immediately so you wouldn't sit there forever. Service is nice and happy to serve you. You can go with big groups or by yourself. Fresh and yummy!!!

I agree with a lot of the reviews here – don’t expect 5* service (although they are friendly and you can see they are doing their best), but the food is good! I’ve been here many many times and the food is excellent. Order your entrees first, otherwise everything will just come out at random times. An example being our fried rice came out first – ten minutes before anything else! Be specific in your order. For example, I ordered a can of coke and ice, and I was given a can of coke…and a bowl of ice. I suppose I technically got what I asked for. It’s not the place you would go on a first date. But with a group of mates, or just general date night – it has excellent food that’s reasonably priced. I give this place four stars, because I've been quite a few times, and I know what I'm in for when I arrive. The crispy shredded beef is a winner!

Considering it's their speciality, I'd highly recommend just sticking to ordering dumplings. The other side dishes we had were not as flash. The prawn dumplings were full with delicious fresh seafood and the dough was steamed perfectly .

Foods and price are very reasonable. However I have to agree with other reviewers that service requires some good improvement. It could be the language capability and/or the non friendliness attitude of the waitress that made the whole experience not as pleasant. Shop owner might want to provide some customer service training to its waiting staff members.

Seriously guys! Utterly disappointing! There wasn’t anything other Chinese restaurants close by, so we just settled for this one. Some quite places you just give them benefit of the doubt and hope it’s a good meal that you don’t react to the food that leaves you with cramps all night and makes you do a runner to the toilet.

This was a lovely surprise for us - a decent yum cha restaurant in Newtown. Their dim sim was large! Steamed mini pork buns and shallot pancake were delicious. Reasonably decent place to go if you're not keen to head into Chinatown.
Juliette
The food was amazingly fresh and so delicious and well priced. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was chill.

Went here for a quick bite - i chose this joint because every time id gone past this place it'd been packed. on arrival there were 2 free tables, both dirty. we had a booking and seeing no-one came to seat us we just sat down. Eventually someone came to see us and we advised of the booking. they didn't seem to understand what we said. We were given two menus and they took the order for the drinks. The waiter we were assigned must either have been new or just overwhelmed by how many ppl were there because we ordered our dishes and he kept saying "thats not our menu so we don't do that here" i pointed to it on the menu and then he seemed to be able to wrangle it up for us. Maybe just miscommunication. We got our drinks and ordered our food. We ordered sweet and sour pork, Mongolian beef and fried rice. The sweet and sour pork came out first and we sat for a bit waiting for the rice  but when it didn't come within 5mins we just started eating the pork. The pork was LOVELY but by the time the next dish had arrived we were already done with the sweet and sour pork. The Mongolian beef was the next to arrive - also very tasty but without the rice it would have been a bit strong, so once we grabbed and asked a waiter he went and got the fried rice. The fried rice was NOT good. no ham or prawns or anything really :( Positives: Serving size, Large menu,<br/>Negatives: Decor,  Impossible to find a park, Service, Hard to hear as its a compact loud area

Very decent dumplings for a good place! Great to go with a large group as they have a huge upstairs area! Also BYO which is awesome! Love the handmade noodles!
Rozalina
Some of the best dumplings in Sydney! The handmade noodles and the cucumber salad are also super delicious! Highly recommend.<br/>Great service and BYO.

Note: Unfortunately Zomato stopped giving 0.5* ... This restaurant would have been rated 3.5...Dumpling King is a Chinese restaurant located in Newtown, Sydney. The restaurant is quite unassuming and looks pretty ordinary from the outside. Shallot Pancake – $10.90. We always ordered shallot pancake in a Chinese restaurant because it has always been my little one’s favourite. The shallot pancake in the restaurant was pretty huge.

The dumplings and noodles at this restaurant are fantastic, but this is negatively outweighed by how appallingly terrible the service is.  On numerous occasions we have sat in there for 15 minutes while receiving absolutely no attention and had to walk up to the counter and ask to order. You will almost always see about 4-5 tables filthy with previous food that they don't bother to clean. We once had a waiter deliver our food, then come and pick it up off out table, take it to another table. The other table were confused and said it was not their dish, we asked the waiter why he had taken the dish we ordered off our table, and he just threw it back on our table without acknowledgement or apology. I honestly don't understand why they can't be polite & provide good service. Does it make their jobs/lives easier to be rude/dismissive? Is it because they know their food is popular that they think they can ignore customers? Are they aware they are terrible and don't care? Or are they oblivious?  Also the restaurant is so jam packed you can't walk through between tables, and anyone that does will knock your chair hard. I once saw them spill an entire plate of food on a pregnant woman.

Love me some Dumplings. This isn’t the best place I’ve been to for dumplings but this place was good value for money. The fried rice was a bit expensive but they did give big portions. I probably wouldn’t eat here again, just because there are so many restaurants to try in the area.

Ok. So I love the tender and delicious handmade noodles with chicken, and the generous serve pork and chive pan fried dumplings. Excellent comfort food that keeps me coming back. If this review was based purely on my feelings towards to food, I'd give more stars. But if you go here, be prepared for the service, which is so inconsistent and terrible it's actually comical. This place appears to be staffed by a transient population of overseas students with ZERO experience in hospitality. Once you are eventually acknowledged and seated, it generally takes some serious time and effort to place an order. Then settle in for the wait. Sometimes the dishes arrive within 15 minutes if each other if it's a good night. One particularly memorable evening, we were eventually served, only to have a waiter then come over and grab my plate off the table in front of me and dump it on the table next to us. The poor peope were very surprised and most apologetic, as they had already finished their meal. I had to convince the incompetent and clueless staff member to give my dinner back! He had o clue who was who. And please be advised, if you call to order takeaway, please add an extra 20 minutes onto the estimated time. You can expect to double park on King st for at least that long when picking up. Although very tasty, the food is not worth a parking fine.

Had dinner at the dumpling king recently. Servings are generous and on the cheaper side. The food is lovely but a bit greasy. The restaurant is BYO.

Delicious and Fresh<br/><br/>I visited this restaurant with my wife for a dinner date in Newtown. We both enjoy Asian Cuisine and though we had dumplings at other restaurants, we've never tried this restaurant in Newtown.<br/><br/>The restaurant gets quite busy as it has a good atmosphere. It is quite small though, so don't expect to have a lot of space around your chair.... This restaurant is good for casual dining only and not a romantic date.<br/><br/>Once the food comes out, you forget about the small faulty issues. The dumplings here are very delicious and fresh. On the night, I just wish I had ordered more. <br/><br/>The service is quite prompt and quick. The staff are very helpful also.<br/><br/>Prices are what you expect to be for a restaurant in Newtown.<br/><br/>I strongly recommend this restaurant, especially if you like your dumplings and Dim Sim's.<br/><br/>There is a BYO availability, however I believe you need to pay a small surcharge

For a place calling itself the Dumpling King, I was expecting a lot better. First of all there are only 4 dumpling varieties to choose from and they won't let you mix and match - its 8 or 12 and that's it.<br/>Secondly the dumplings are gluggy, way too doughy and flavourless. I tried improving them with the classic 2-1 soy and vinegar combination to no avail.<br/>I also ordered chicken and corn soup which I literally could only touch after 10 minutes - took that long to cool down, way too hot - and again flavourless and had the consistency of overcooked porridge.<br/>The real killer for me was that when I asked for the bill the waitress got angry, said she was busy cleaning the tables and told me to pay at the counter. Just unacceptable.<br/>1.5 points only because I didn't get food poisoning.

A group of us went and I ordered the pan fried pork dumplings. They were dry and tasteless and left a bad texture in your mouth after eating them.

Visiting from Melbourne and honestly the worse food I've tasted in a local Chinese restaurant. Dumplings are not even handmade and soft, can taste the thin and hardness of the skin of the dumplings meaning they were bought instead of handmade. Definitely not worth the $12.80. The salt and pepper eggplant, was a bit better. However, way way too much salt. Didn't even bother to finish it because it was that salty. It's like the chef just dumped a whole heap of salt onto the fried egg plants.

Lovely place to go for some cheap and cheerful Chinese food! The food was hearty and very satisfying, and the restaurant was cosy with quick service.<br/><br/>I love the sides from this place, they are so tasty!! All I really needed was a plate of dumplings and some of those potato and seaweed sides and I was set.<br/><br/>But of course I tried some of the other dishes and I found the squid quite delightful also. Everything was worth trying so you won't be let down with any of the choices.

If you're planning to go as a group, expect the food to come at different times and expect the staff to forget half the order as well. They will not be apologetic either as the prawn dumplings can take two hours apparently which they will neglect to tell you. Also make sure to order steamed because they burn the bottom of the dumplings if pan fried. <br/>I would not recommend this place for dumplings as dumpling hut is a better choice down the road.

Dumpling King is regularly busy. Its a no-fuss dumpling house with basic, efficient service. The spicy eggplant here is amazing. The Pork Chive dumplings ($12.90) are reasonable. I loved the Peking Duck pancakes ($27.90) although I found the portion to be small. I was blown away by the Eggplant with Chilli Hotpot ($15.90). It held heat, was tender, gooey and so delicious, this is what I'm coming back for.

Have Been here for lunch and dinner couple times and the Food is okay, service up and down. Have never been to the toilet 🚽 but alas Used their toilet and voila 😷😷😷😷if you haven't been to their toilet before I've it ago and yourself will you come back??

Me & the King shared a plate of dumplings, I needed mine fried coz I likes my arteries clogged. The pork and chives were enjoyable and the price during lunch hours is very cheap, friendly staff and decent atmosphere, I shall be dining with the King again soon xx <br/>

Newtown may have abundance of Thai restaurants but it is definitely slim pickings when it comes to dumpling houses. We ordered steamed pork and chive dumplings, shallot pancake and mongolian beef between two of us. The portions were generous, the beef tasted nice but dumplings were average and pancake was doughy. It was very cheap for under $40 for two, BYOW definitely helped to keep the cost low.
Pompom
Waited almost 40 minutes to get some takeaway dumplings, while the restaurant is only half full. The prawn dumplings were less-than-average, the dumpling skin were so thick with just a single tiny prawn in each. Charged $15 for it. Definitely would not go back.

This was the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. The waiters did not speak English well and did not try to understand our orders. I wrote down exactly what I wanted, the waiter agreed that they can process our order and ended up serving something different. I tried to see if they could resolve the issue by offering a discount but they charged full price. I will never come here again
Liam
Extensive menu. Tasty food. Keep in mind the dumplings come in serves of 8-10 so don't over-order. Vegos: I recommend the salt n pepper eggplant. YUM. The venue can get very busy and staff are often rushed. But the affordable prices make up for this.

Came here for lunch as I was in the area and heard about this place. Let's say my first impression of this place is the type of restaurant you'd find in Chinatown in the cbd, the decor is quite shabby and way to many small tables cramped near each other. Probably being lunchtime during the week the place was quite empty with only 3 other customers. As the day was boiling I decided to go for the lunch special of peppered beef and rice as i thought I'd save my next trip to try the dumplings or noodles. The food came out in about 15 mins and first thing i found was the rice was still a bit hard and not cooked properly and probably too much onions but the beef was quite tender and moist so I can't fault that. Like I said I would come back to try the dumplings and shredded pork pancake.

Terrible service, we had to help ourself to the menu. When we asked to have our order taken her response was quite agressive. The food came out very slow and half an hour later. The chinese broccoli was horrible and sauce was watered down. We canceled our dumplings because they took to long. Food and service was crap in general and the restaurant was empty.

I love the food here I want to give it a 5/5 but the service is sooooo bad I can't! I've been 7 times or so and every time their service lets them down. I'm a waitress and I tip when I'm happy I wanted to walk into the kitchen hand them a tip and tell then make sure your waitstaff don't get it because they're so lazy! Go for the food as long as you are prepared for warm beer and to organise your own chop sticks and plates.

Dumpling King has a fairly extensive menu with all sorts of other Asian dishes offered such as soups, stir fries, rice, noodles, meat and poultry of all varieties, but of course the only fitting items to order from this place tonight were dumplings. We got the steamed version of each available except the Beef & Celery, plus the pork bun that was somehow lumped into the dumpling menu.

LOVE THIS PLACE. It's our guilty pleasure or splurge on taste and oils place. Always order the pork and chives pan fried dumplings and black pepper steak handmade noodles mmm. I miss this place since we've moved over the bridge now.. One time the restaurant caught on fire and was closed for 2 months, was devo

The food is good but portions were so small that 3 dishes with can't even feed more than 1 person. <br/>Ordered the vegetables with prawns and there was only 3 pieces of tiny prawns. <br/>Not worth the money. <br/><br/>Environment was too packed. <br/>Never had lunch there but dinner time, I wouldn't recommend going.

Okay, so I'll take part responsibility for the experience. There are certain circumstances when one should not order pork, prawn and duck.<br/>Some that jump to mind are Bali, Mexico and now Dumpling King Newtown.<br/>My buddy and I actually felt sick for a number of hours after dining here. Physically ill.<br/>Off with the Kings head!

For a place where lunches are $6.9 (now $7.9) on weekdays, there's not much to complain about! I usually get the fried dumplings (pork and chives) and hand-made noodle dish - they are my favourite dishes here. <br/><br/>The service isn't the best but the food is tasty and the price is so cheap. There is usually this one waitress and she looks so overworked- poor thing!
Ant
Very good, fast and tasty. Great range of plain and soup filled dumplings. Also seriously good duck pancakes, although a tad expensive for the quantity

This place is my least favourite dumpling place on King Street. There's way too many tables for how small the area. You can barely move your chair out without knocking into the next table. The dumplings itself are ok, not the best but I've had far worse. The service was slow and the workers were rude. It would probably be ok if you went on a slow day but overall, I wouldn't come here again.
Etorning
Bad service.. I wouldn't know if the food tasted any good because I waited 20 mins to be served, and when they still didn't take our order, I walked out. To make it worse, they took the order of the table next to us and they had arrived after us. The service here is horrible and I am never going back. My family and friends will also not be going back either

BEST DUMPLINGS IN SYDNEY!. I love coming here, it's all about the dumplings! They are the BEST in sydney by far in my opinion! Also they are sooooo cheap (lunch specials menu) - 10 dumplings for $6 dollars! Nowhere can beat that price and still taste amazing! The service is okay, could be better. At least it doesn't stink so much anymore, they've recently refurbed and it looks/smells much nicer!

After hearing rave reviews about this restaurant, we decided to brave the cold on a wintery weekend that we were house-sitting in the area, and check it out for ourselves. Unfortunately for us, it was an altogether disappointing and horrid experience. I can safely say I’ve never sampled more disgusting ‘food’ in all my life (and I use that term loosely). I truly hope that this is the only time I will ever need to write a negative review on this blog. To start off, the waiter was clearly unimpressed with our choices, as he snickered when we gave him our orders. Not a good start to the evening. When the sweet-and-sour soup arrived, it resembled something found in a pigs trough more than a diner’s bowl. A first, tentative sip confirmed our fears. It was basically a cauldron of boiling vinegar, garnished with a few leaves of limp lettuce and vinegar-infused wontons. One bite made us want to be physically ill. (We should have known better to order t

I visited Dumpling King last Sunday. Not Adelaide’s famous Dumpling King, and it was a little more expensive. It still tasted great! Pork and chives dumplings The dumplings were nice – not as good as Adelaide’s Dumpling King, but better than the Chinese  Noodle Restaurant. I love the vinegar that comes with these! Sorry about the very dark photography tonight. Hand pulled noodles Hand pulled noodles with veggies were nice and disappeared quickly! Broccoli This was yummy with nice salty oyster/soy sauce pooled around the edges. It was perfectly cooked, not too soft or too crunchy. There was also a plate of chilli eggplant that was spicy and richly flavoured with plenty of oil soaked into the eggplant flesh. Overall, Dumpling King was great. I’d definitely go back, although there are so many other places I want to visit! View Larger Map Tagged: dumpling king , Dumplings

Turns out, the dumplings and noodles at Dumpling King are completely delicious. Both are handmade, textured just-right and excellent for soaking up soup. The veggie dumplings – with tofu, cabbage, carrot and vermicelli - are probably the best I’ve had. Move over pork ‘n chives!

When this place first opened a couple of years ago, Mr Black and I were sooo excited. We were also anxious that it might not survive, being one of Newtown's gazillion restaurants on King Street. Happily, Dumpling King is still there and (deservedly) busy!
Miss Feathers
They do great fat soft handmade nobbly noodles of varying size, clear slightly oily broths and handmade dumplings.

Now we don't have to go to Chinatown to find good Northern Chinese food, Dumpling King on King Street Newtown gets our thumbs up… Some of the cheapest and most delicious street food around town is North Chinese: simple, cleansing, filling, peasant food.
Heneedsfood
Salty, meaty and those handmade noodles … good lord those noodles. I’d invite the kitchen folk back to my place for some noodle action any day.

At Dumpling King on Newtown's main road, it's generally always packed around dinner time which is a good sign for my seemingly insatiable appetite for the dough-wrapped morsels. Pan fried pork and chive dumplings at Dumpling King, King Street, Newtown My preferences are for pan fried dumplings for some crisp skins, a filling of minced pork with a vegetable or two, and served with vinegar sauce and chilli oil on the side. And it's as if I am royalty because it's all there at Dumpling King. The pan fried ones are always boiling hot and mostly at risk of squirting or leaking revered dumpling juices. Garnished with shreds of iceberg lettuce, this - and the condiments on the side - is all I need in a meal. Spicy tofu There isn't a mapo tofu dish at Dumpling King - the spicy tofu dish is as close as it gets. There's no meat in it b

Lots of yelling!. My partner & I went to have a very quick meal at around 9pm after seeing a movie. We only ordered pork/chive dumplings and shallot pancake, which came out reasonably quickly. They were both okay, definitely not the best I've had (the pancake was very salty and thicker than usual, the dumplings got cold very quickly) - but good enough for something quick. However, our experience was marred by the seemingly chaotic nature of the staff. Our waitress hurriedly sat us up near the register when there were plenty of other seats, dropped chopsticks on the floor continually, and seemed not to want to give us clean ones! One other party obviously had beef with the staff and were arguing with them for some time during our meal, then when the party left, the staff were yelling quite loudly in Chinese to each other until we finally decided to bail. Not a place for a relaxing meal.
Petercrocks1971
Worst Dumplings IN SYDNEY. Not only is this place over rated, the dumplings are hard raw with tasteless fillings. There are some too dumplings up the road, without giving the name away and having it over run with derro hipsters - good luck if you find it. <br/><br/>This place is a no go zone. If you want to end up throwing up come eat here
Therese.burroes
Great food. The food is awesome and cheap but the staff struggle at keeping up even when it's doesn't seem that busy. If you want awesome Chinese and don't care if you get get bad service definitely have to give it a go
Diner Loon
Love this place!. This is my local, love coming here for dinner! Dumplings taste amazing and you get huge serves for little money. Service isn't outstanding but not bad either. Highly recommended!
Butterjunky
Bad Experience. They took our order but brought out some deep fried thing that we didn't order, which was cold then wouldn't take it back or bring out what we ordered. We should have left at that point because the dumplings that came out as part of our order were flavourless and were so oily they would make the BP Mexico gulf spill blush. When we got the bill it was about $20 more expensive than expected and they wouldn't show us the order slip. 2/10 do not want.
Jacquieburns
AWESOME!. NEWTOWN, SYDNEY: The place was packed when we walked in - didn't notice the seating upstairs so don't be put off if you think you can't get in. Believe me, it's worth it. The dumplings are out of this world.... so much so, we're going back tonight.

Not Just Dumplings. There are some delightful dishes on this restaurant's menu. Dumplings are great as are the more substantial meals

Disappointing overall :-/ H.... Disappointing overall :-/<br/>Had dinner with our 9&11yo boys with fried prawn dumplings (ok), steamed pork buns (which were dumplings :-(, chicken fried rice (ok), crispy beef (YUM) and 'Peking duck w pancakes'. Therein lies the trouble. The pancakes were fried and a bit greasy, duck was nice, but not enough cucumber/onions, and the sauce was thick waxy and tasted like Vegemite. Hhhmmmm.
Chefjules
We always come to this place for dumplings and hand made noodles. This time we tried the deep fried ice cream, it tasted like chicken and we couldn't eat it. We told the girl that it was not awful and her attitude was even more awful!!! She didn't want to give us a refund bcoz we ate it she said! She was quite angry at us during the conversation. We had one bite and she said that's "eating" <br/>That was just ridiculous. It wasn't about the money but we wanted to be treated as a loyal customer.

No good. Go to chinatown.. Ordered the prawn dumplings. Service was terrible. Dumplings even worse...over cooked tasteless and turned up with half the fillings outside the casings. NOT the king of anything...least of all dumplings.
Beroberts65
Ehh. The dumplings are SO-SO for the self proclaimed Dumpling Kings! Also the service was horrendous. I was appalled. Not returning.
Chris Cala
Literally the best dumplings in Sydney. Great price too.
Fattybombatty
Amazing vegetarian dumplings.
Knox
Their shallot pancakes are awesome!
Sarah Archer
Came for lunch and ordered of lunch special menu. Dumpling choice small, and noodle dish lacked flavour. At least it was cheap but would definitely not return again. Service was slow, and place needs a revamp, a bit seedy.
Nat
Enjoyed It. Love cheap dinners at dumpling king! Tasty food and good for a casual newtown meal. I find the service good, even when sitting at tables near the front.
Heidi Quarton
Pfft!. First time order was wrong, forgot our dumplings in our soup, then expected us to come back to collect or would 'put our names down for next time'<br/>second time, our order was wrong once again, got a dumpling noodle soup and vegetarian dumplings on the side as a seperate meal, got only 3 vegetarian dumplings when we paid $8.80 for 12!<br/><br/>Pfft wont bother again
Sydneyguyrojoe
Where are all the dumplings?. I find it funny this place calls itself Dumpling King yet there isnt much variety of dumplings here. This particular night thats all we had, and they were good. Not the best ive had but on the upper echoeons of other dumpling places. So at this point, the dumplings are all i can recommend.......

Believe the bad reviews below. The service at this place is terrible. We had to badger and beg for our meals. Went with a birthday group and the birthday girl was last to be served her dinner... about 1 1/2 hours later. Poor girl was so hungry and drunk on an empty stomach by then. The food was tasty but to live up to their name sake they need to serve a bigger variety of dumplings. Jump on a bus to Chinatown instead.
HungryHM
Cheap for a reason. We are regular customers and went for dinner, had to ask 3 times for wine glasses.<br/>Ordered dumplings which never came. After we had finished eating (other dishes) we asked for the dumplings and were told they were three minutes away: but never arrived. When told them we didn't want the dumplings anymore, they told us that we had received the dumplings and that we would have to pay for them. This lead to a heated discussion where they continued to tell us they gave us the dumplings. It's one thing to have slow service, it's another to be accused of lying. Never going back.
Warren Cammack
Great dumplings and noodles!. Great place for cheap eats. The dumplings are pretty good and the rest of the menu is great as well - go of for one of the banquets if you're really hungry!<br/>Service could do with a bit of polish but nothing to put you off coming back
Bec
Fo Shiz Ma Nizz. The dumplings here are, for lack of more appropriate word, 'the bomb'. Fantastic selection, quick service, superb food and amazing location!
Jt
Really upset. Came here with a friend on their recommendation and was served leathery dumplings. Also we ordered a 3 person banquet and we received the same serving size as for two people. Really unfortunate as have heard great things about this restaurant and was really looking forward to the experience
Michael
Is it just me or should a place with dumplings in their name serve more than two dumplings dishes?
Intrepid
For the first 12 months you couldn't fault this fresh new much needed sassy addition to king St but sadly they seem to have lost their balance, cutting down on costs and service standards as the food eat in and take away - especially the dumpling have gone downhill. Tried quite a few times hoping to be proved wrong but this morning after waking up sick (Combo of dumplings, sezchuan noodles and fish Ginger and shallot), we won't be back again :-(
Matt
Dumpling King For The Win. Sensibly priced, licensed, and honest to goodness dumplings aplenty. The only trouble is choosing between steamed and fried... a plate of each, thanks. Oh, an extra bowl of chilli. And your set!
Kevin McDonald
Damn fine. What can i say? Top value for the discerning dumpling eater. BYO, dumplings and a reasonable selection of more traditional Chinese dishes. <br/><br/>The music is eclectic.

Newtown's king of dumplings. The dumplings are what you really come to this place for. <br/>My favourites are the Northern fried dumplings: crispy bottoms and soft steamed tops, juicy inside. Delicious! The Santon Chicken is a very generous serve of tender and tasty on-the-bone pieces dressed in zingy flavours. Salt & Pepper Squid is pretty ordinary, a sizeable mound of greasy, salty, lightly-battered slivers. The Shredded Pork is packed with flavour and very generous in size, and can sometimes be a bit over-sauced. The Spring Pancake is a nice light meal packed with shredded black fungus, glass noodles, green onion and shredded omelete. Can be a bit on the bland side but nothing a splash of soy can't fix.<br/><br/>><br/><br/>Oh, how times have changed. I called mid-afternoon to see if they were open and was told they were. Great stuff. Turned up with some out-of-town guests for a quick dumpling fix. No acknowledgement on arrival so we seated ourselves. Waited for menus, service, anything. Meanwhile all staff were chowing on an early dinner at their own table. One of them decides to get up and drop menus on our table, then sat back down to continue eating. <br/><br/>One table walked out after being ignored for too long.<br/><br/>They stop eating again to take our order, still chewing and abruptly asking what we want. Beyond embarrassing. And the dumplings? As bland as ever. Time to find a new dumpling joint.
