Review The Marlborough Hotel - Newtown

Iconic pub in Newtown, it’s been around forever! Great night out with friends, just what you’d expect in a pub, it’s loud and fun 🤩

Came here for my first bar in Sydney. Door staff and glassies were quite welcoming, and the drink prices are fair with a nice party atmosphere, however I tried to request the location of the restrooms from one of the security guards and they completely snubbed me and told me to move on. Overall I had a good time, but would be nice to tend to patrons if they require your amenities.

THIS REVIEW IS PURELY FOR FAT BELLY JACKS. Marly is an alrite bar nothing great but inside it lives A hidden gem called Fat belly jacks, and that place deserves all the stars. Had the tenders their last night and the hot chicken burger with blue cheese sauce. This was our second visit, the first time I tried their fried chicken which was also great it’s just that the portion size was a bit small. But all in all this is hands down the best Nashville style burger I’ve had ever. Like this is it. The tenders were bomb, super spicy. Just needed a bit more salt or chicken salt on it. Everything else was perfect. The fries were fresh, hot, seasoned well, and crispy! Fat belly jacks definitely needs it’s own store in Newtown. For real tho. We were super captivated by the food and forgot to take pictures, but I got one of my tenders later just to show how perfect it looked. And a shout out to the chef in the kitchen last night, we were the last customers ordering food and I asked the dude a million questions about the tenders before ordering. He was super helpful 🙌🏼

Phoebe is the most friendly bartender in newtown! She was very attentive to our group and remembered our drinks! Drinks were great, it is a chill space and the music held an amazing vibe. Overall, would recommend! Cheers to phoebe!!! Give her a raise!

What a horrible experience. I will never be coming back here. As an old local, this pub has changed massively. It is not the friendly local pub it used to be. Last night we went to watch the rugby that was on the big screen. They bar staff refused to put the commentary on and instead turned the music louder. Mid game they randomly closed the big screen, without notifying us. The bar manager and 3 bouncers then came over to us to tell us that we needed to leave because someone in our group was "being aggressive to the bar staff" - which was completely untrue and a fabricated story. It became very apparent that they wanted to set up a DJ and remove all the chairs that we were sitting on. The bar manager and bouncers handled this situation poorly and frankly they were the aggressors in the situation. There was no fair or polite communication coming from the bar manager and bouncers. There was no alternative provided of where we could move to to continue to watch the game. It was a very disrespectful and disappointing to be treated like that as a paying patron. To come to a pub, with a big screen, showing a game, with a friendly group of friends and be treated like this is rude, disgusting and unacceptable. If I could give zero stars I would. My friends and I will spread the word about how poor this pub is.

I'm a huge fan of the Marlborough hotel (aka marly bar). I've been here 3 times now and I'm definitely coming back. Great friendly atmosphere, good music, security is pretty friendly and drink prices are reasonable for Sydney. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Last night I went to this venue for the first time. The bouncers at the front door were quite friendly and efficient in permitting me and my friends to enter. Once inside I didn’t order a single drink and was just dancing. Two of my friends went to the bar and while they were gone I kept on dancing. A young bouncer pulled me aside, asked me to step outside and said that my eyes were glassy and that he had reason to believe that I was intoxicated. I didn’t argue with him but it’s very disheartening to be kicked out when I was sober enough to legally drive. I work very long hours running my own business so sometimes my eyes look “glassy” from tiredness. I won’t be returning to this venue. I’ve been told that Newtown has a culture of inclusion and diversity but this place doesn’t have any tolerance for a yawn or the slightest suggestion of minimal fatigue.
