Review Pastizzi Cafe - Newtown

Timeshare Chinchilla
Delicious food using fresh ingredients. Ordered chicken ravioli with pink sauce (main size). Huge portion. Garlic bread super tasty. Needed a doggy bag for both. If you order a coke make sure you ask for the can as I got a glass full of ice and flat coke from a big 1.25L bottle.

Pronto service and classic Italian food. House wine by the glass was very good. The buffalo mozzarella salad had a huge ball of soft mozzarella. Everything was tasty and warming.

Here is to another five star review for this restaurant! It is well deserved! You get amazing service, amazing prices, and an amazing selection. Not much more you could ask for! The pastry I got was so good I ordered another for takeaway just so my partner could have one at home too. Scrumptious.

Nice decoration and foods! I've ordered a Spaghetti Crab & Prawns, and it was extremely delicious with large prawns and tasty crab sauce! Super recommend this one!

Enjoyed a savory chicken pastizi and also a berry custard for dessert. Nice buttery flavourful pastry with pleasant service, dining space and located in newton's busy street King St.

Very fresh savoury and sweet pastries. The flavours have a good range of variety. Chilli can Caine and the chocolate ricotta are nice. Although the pastry could be more airy. We tried the marinara, creamy mushroom and basil pesto chicken pasta. The creamy pastas are too heavy and not enough savoury taste. The marinara has well balanced taste and texture. Will come back for the dessert cake! Update Jun: the berries custard pastizzi has very creamy texture. The apple rhubarb cake is so buttery and crumbly, nice taste and texture. Highly recommended the Dark Ale beef pastizzi, great pastry texture with hot and tender filling.

Truffle risotto was to die for!!! We got the pollo pesto with gnocchi which was great too. Gnocchi wasnt melt in the mouth but was alright. Good service and reasonably priced. Thank you

Pasta was good but the service could be better. We have no water from sitting to end and it is really a long waiting time to order. Not bad and worth a try.

Sorry to advise that I had a bad experience last Saturday night (5/5/18) at the Pastizzi Cafe. After telling two of our friends how great the place was we went there for a feed of Pastizzi on Saturday night with these 2 first timers. When we arrived we were given a table for 4 and menus. At the top of the menu was all the Pastizzi types. Under the Pastizzi types was "Please order Pastizzi's at counter". So I go to the counter to place my order. While in the queue a waiter comes up to me and says to sit back down and he will come and take my order. I thanked him for this gesture. When he eventually came to our table to take our order I told him which Pastizzi's we would like to have and he said that Pastizzi's were for takeaway orders only and need to be ordered at the counter. This was the same waiter who told me sit down and he would take the order. He made it very clear that we could not eat our order of the Pastizzi at the table that we were shown to. The worst part of this was while I went to line up again to order Pastizzi to takeaway the waiter went to the table where my wife and guests were and asked them to leave as they needed the table for guests who weren't eating Pastizzi. And I thought that this place was a Pastizzi cafe. Silly me. It will be a long time until I return and I'm sure my 2 guests won't be wanting to go back either.

Always wonderful food..pastizzie and ravioli freshly made and the staff are great.. always smiling and friendly.. Best Maltese food in Sydney... wish they were in the Shire....cannot recommend them enough..

Been coming here five years now the owner and staff are the best anyone could ask for the food is even better than that . If heaven has food like that there ,it's now wonder it's such a popular place .. The owner allways makes time to say hello to everyone that comes into the cafe . Keep up the great work guys . I will always tell everyone about you

The Chicken and Chorizo is amazing! Try the gourmet pastizzi. The ravioli melt in your mouth delicious . Great place to go with friends and family but remember to book as they are so busy. Great food and I love it.

Love the Pastizzi, the Kinne, the traditional ricotta and peas ones for me are the best. The kids made me try the ricotta and chocolate -yum. A tribute to the Maltese side of my tummy, all the tastebuds jumping for joy. You know a week ago the PM of Malta snuck out of the Euro conference in Valletta with 2 other European PMs to a local Sitzzi shop in Malta. They wanted to experience the real deal - he got a bit busted but it's always worth it for a good stizzi.

Busy, busy, busy. Even though this cafe is always busy, service is very good. We had 2 pastizzis each and shared the 4 cheese gnocchi. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly. Always a good spot for a late-night bite to eat after visiting the theatre.

Pastizzis Cafe puts so much love & hard work into everything they do that it's impossible not to love them.. They're dishes are just delightful & have that little special touch than most places lack....true Italiano Authenticity!! Ask Lenny & Deb any questions about the food & you'll get a history lesson on their origins.. I particularly love their Veal dishes, Home made Ravioli, Spaghetti Marinara, the Seafood hotpot, but the highest recommendation goes to the Rabbit Cacciatore.. Heaven on Earth!! On starters they do a killer Bruscetta infused with classic Garlic running through it, the way it should taste.. And my wife is in love with their White Bait Fritters.. Great People Great Food but best of all they give Great Community!!!! Love it

Love this place. Always great service. The ricotta ravioli are my favourite.

I am not Maltese, I do have a Maltese friend that introduced me to Pastizzi. This place makes a wonderful pastizzi! And the service was great! I will come back before the end of my trip. I actually bought half a dozen of these before going to dinner at another restaurant, but they smelled so good I scarfed one down before I got to dinner. Delicious!

Just love this place, the owners are always happy, joke with you and the food is fresh, and just like mum made it, they are generous with their portions, just like mum was, eating there is like dining with family.
Rosemary Connor
Lovely food and great service! Went there 14/01/17 before seeing Icehouse at the Enmore. Definitely recommend it and will happily go there again! YUM!

Have been supporting this lovely restaurant even before their move. Great food, especially their desserts and pastizzis! To top it all off, impeccable service. Staffs take their time to get to know their customers well. Sadly, I’m leaving Australia due to COVID situation, will definitely come back again when it gets better.

Ordered the Lasagne Beef and Penne Pollo Pesto.

The Lasagne was mediocre. However, the Pasta dish was excellent. The Pesto sauce is housemade and delicious. Flavour sensation.

Service was quick and food arrived fast considering the place was packed.

With Great Food, Service and Serving Sizes this place is a gem! I had the linguine boscaiola and the company had a marinara spaghetti type dish. The pastizzi's are perfectly flaky and the range of flavours are great. They even had rabbit on the menu which (whilst not my thing-must appeal to lots of ppl) tbh the only thing that let this place down was the interior. There appeared to be several parts to the restaurant. all very messy and toilets outside at the back too but food was very tasty :D Will be back
Tastypanda
Pastizzi Cafe bases its menu around various pastas, and most importantly it's eponymous pastry known as the pastizzi! The pastizzi is a humble little thing, not at all anything fancy. Flaky pastry forms a small parcel which encases a gourmet centre which can be sweet or savoury - take your pick! The kitchen is a factory line which is constantly churning out the freshly baked treat to hungry hoards of customers throughout the day
Hibz A
By far the best pasta I have ever had. Their pastizzi’s are so fresh and full of flavour, have it with the home made sauce even better.. you taste the freshness and authenticity in the food and you won’t find better ravioli anywhere else.
Chewie
Fettuccine Boscaiola ($16), spaghetti and meatballs ($16) and pastizzi ($2.90) apple and cinnamon and chilli con carne. The pastries really hit the spot being that they were flaky and warm - my favourite of the two being the chilli con carne. Both pastas were also made really well, can’t tell if the dough itself was made by hand but in any regards portion sizes were huge and very filling. Great joint for quick meal and staff are lovely 👍

I love this local cafe/restaurant - I love their pastizzi (both sweet & savoury), I love their no nonsense menu (especially the spaghetti with meatballs), I love their wait staff who deal with busy shifts with a smile and good attitudes. I can’t eat here a lot as it’s pretty rich, but when I do I’m pretty happy

We went here for a super quick dinner on our way home. My daughter was starving and I promised her gnocchi with cheese. We stood waiting for a lengthy amount of time and were incredibly disappointed that none of the servers acknowledged us, despite several walking past us 2-3 times. No hello, smile, or "I'll be with you in a minute". No acknowledgement from the server behind the counter - just a quick glance in a very unfriendly manner. We gave up waiting and started to sit at a dirty and cluttered table. As we did so, a server came over to us to say the table was reserved. No hello, no nothing, no offer to sit at a table outside, she simply walked away. They obviously have so much business they don't give a crap whether or not a new customer comes along. Lenny, perhaps you need to take note of what goes on when you are not around. Needless to say, I am no longer recommending this place to any of my customers and I am never going back to your cafe. You've lost me as a customer.
João Revés Gonçalves
The pastizzi are really nice, no wonder they are so popular. You can even buy a bunch and cook it yourself at home. But the best for me in this restaurant are the homemade raviolis. Second time I ve been here and I’ll probably comeback . Also a very fair price in my opinion .

Varieties of pastizzis to choose from. Couldn’t remember what I had but all were delicious.
Lasagna was delicious but it was little bit cold during my last visit. Spaghetti was delicious too, big portion.

This place is always buzzing, and with good reason!

- The pastizzis are awesome - do try the spinach & ricotta, beef curry and chicken, bacon & leek. ($4.20)

- The date slice ($2.50) and kannoli are must try’s!

- get a frozen take home pack $20 for 12. Worth every dollar.

Service is excellent, it’s busy but they are great people. You won’t get a table for pastizzis only at night. Book a table ahead for dinner
Small little gem hidden in Newtown! I went on a Sunday arvo and it was super busy. Food was delicious and a decent price, I need to come back to try their dessert menu! I would recommend if you’re craving for some Italian
ZomatoFun
Very high quality pasta dishes! Large portions makes you keep wanting to eat. The Pastizzi’s were also worth trying. We had spaghetti and meatballs, crab and prawn spaghetti, fettuccini chicken pesto, pasta carbonara with no cream. Pastizzi chicken and mushroom. We even bought the frozen pastizzi to take home for $18 10pk. Will definitely come back.

This place is always packed but worth the wait. It’s now my favourite place to carb load on pasta, I had the vongole spaghetti - it was a generous amount, the right amount of chilli (not too much) and prepare for a garlic hit (but that’s how it should be!)

I went back to grab dessert - tiramisu, spinach/ricotta Pastizzi and chocolate/ricott Pastizzi. All amazing.

The extra perk is if you can nab a table outside, it’s dog friendly - perfect for obsessed non-dog owners who get a bit of furry attention while dining.
Dominic Svensson
Pastizzi really does the Italian cafe thing well, with hot strong coffee (a little rough but I liked it) and classic meals that are fairly cheap. The pastizzi are fantastic - they pack a lot of filling into them and somehow give a very rich taste (the spinach and ricotta must have had some great spices or something in it) - and are actually priced as snacks at $2.90, so you can get from 1 to 4 depending on your hunger and still feel like it's a cheap meal. The pastas are pretty good - good homemade ravioli and rich sauces plus they’re the only place I know of in Sydney that does carbonara without cream - and the servings are very large for the price (when I got some takeaway, I made two dishes out of every serve).

This place is five-minute walk from my home. I've been visiting this restaurant for roughly six or seven times. They never let me down. Considering the flavor and quality of food, the price is quite fair.

The were so many to choose from but you can always ask for some help and they will point you in the right direction. The pastizzi themselves were delicious. The staff quite nice and polite.

I lool forward to come back again

I had been wanting to come here for quite some time because it is always so busy. The cafe is a non pretentious eatery where the love is put into the food.

We came for take away dessert pastizzis and I was so happy with the service. They were so busy but yet multiple staff asked if we were ok and were so friendly.

The pastizzis are delicious and flaky. My favourite was the berry and custard. The tiramisu wasn’t bad, quite a simple one.

I have since gone for pasta and it was so good. Non fussy, delicious pasta. Cooked perfectly!

Perfect Pasta at Pastizzi

A small cafe located at the centre of Newtown, it's a small restaurant but I'm impressed on their services and food. The place was packed at lunchtime and we were excited to try their pasta.

The staff was friendly and always concider to the customer. They asked how was the food with a smile and told us recommendations for desserts.

The entre was fresh off the oven and it was really tasty, we had chicken mushrooms, Salmon and Chicken chorizo. We also had the spaghetti Bolognese with their Napolise sauce, it was delicious!

All of their pasta is fresh made with fresh ingredients, they we're cooked by perfection.
Shirley
The pastizzi’s are delicious although a little dry because they sit under a hot light all day. Note: Its not easy to cut so it’s best eaten by hand. The pastas are also very delicious although they did come out in only 5 mins which is a little concerning. In this case, the non-fresh pastas don’t affect taste at all! Would definitely go back. Also it’s super cheap guys! Shared entrée, shared dessert and 2 mains were under $50! Most of the staff are also helpful, polite and friendly.

Amazing little neighbourhood gem in Newtown serving Maltese food including pastizzi ($2.70 each), with lovely, flakey pastry and lots of fillings to choose from like traditional ricotta or mushy peas, as well as flavours like chicken and chorizo, chilli con carne and chocolate ricotta or apple cinnamon for dessert.

We also tried their homemade ravioli filled with spinach and ricotta ($17), with a choice of sauce (napolitana, arrabiata, cream, pink or chilli and garlic oil) and opted for napolitana. The pasta was perfectly al dente for me, with a good bite to it although I feel like could be on the hard side for some people. The sauce was DELICIOUS and perfectly seasoned with the rich taste of tomatoes.

We also ordered a bowl of the Penne Arrabiata ($17 - chilli and napolitana sauce), which was delicious, however I couldn't taste any chilli at all. They do have chilli flakes at the table, however, which is good if you want some added heat.

My partner who is Maltese loved this place and is so happy to have found somewhere serving such wholesome and delicious food at a very reasonable price. It's a no frills eatery, which always seems quite busy with people eating in and also waiting for takeaway orders! Definitely recommend checking it out, I'll be back to try some kannolis for dessert!

Pastizzi is normal, nothing special. Pasta is dissapointed, its texture is not as i expected, it has a hard texture, seems like it was not cooked long enough. We came at 12pm.. We wait for 25 mins for a pasta. Customer service is good and friendly enough. I think i only come back here for the pastizzi on my casual breakky, as it comes faster than pasta.

These homemade Maltese pastries and jumbo Italian ravioli are flavour-bomb! The beef & dark ale pastizzi is super crispy and utterly delicious. The pasta are so satisfying 🍝. It has a busy bustling atmosphere which is very inviting. Highly recommended 👍👍👍

Amazing place that is a family run business. The pastizzi are so yummy berry and custard is the best! The pasta is incredibly so fresh and full of flavour

Extremely great hospitality! I've been twice and the staff have been amazing both times. Bruschetta was nice, I liked the extra garlic. I ordered the salmon pasta which was also good, generous amount of salmon. Only negative feedback I would give is the penne is store bought (they make their own ravioli in house though) and the pasta was drowned in a little bit too much sauce for my liking. Might order the ravioli dishes instead next time.

Being a local, i love popping by this place for a quick snack or light meal! The Pastizzis are delicious, the staff are always friendly. Worth checking out if your in the neighbourhood. Nothing fancy, just simple affordable food done good!

Very disappointing experience at the Pastizzi Cafe.

As soon as our order was taken we were given our Pastizzi, although we were under the impression we were given out with the mains. We ordered Cheese and Spinach, Beef and other Pastizzi. It was roughly a 30 minute wait but the time in the time we waited we were that hungry we ate them.

Once our meals did arrive, I checked the Beef Ravioli that I ordered and discovered it was Cheese Ravioli. On discovery of this we waived down staff who took the plate. The lady said she'd take the plate to the cook and let them know. So while my partners food went cold we waited for my plate. In this time we heard staff mentioning that I had sent my plate back. Once I had my plate of food I had to quickly eat as it was late by this stage, meaning I couldn't enjoy it.

Overall this was not an enjoyable experience. We will not be returning.

For starters, the only reason I've given this place a 4.5 is just because the restaurant is a tad bit too small for probably a lot of people who might come in (maybe that's why one needs to make reservations)! So, technically, it's a "5" rated experience through and through.
For entrée, we tried the Garlic King Prawns with Garlic Bread. The prawns came in a piping hot broth in a small bowl with a side of garlic bread, and the combination just couldn't have been better, it never once felt there was too much garlic involved in the dish. The portion might feel small but it's more than perfect for 2 or even 3 people. Then we ordered Involtini (I hope I've got the name right!) which was veal made in a tomato-sauce served with some mash, the meat was succulent to the core and the sauce was as Italian in its taste as it could be, even though I'm not a connoisseur but I've tried Italian in a lot of restaurants 😁. With it came Chicken breast pan grilled with Cacciatore; I could only taste a little bit but the chicken tasted amazing and was presented well, with the breast topped beautifully with the mushroom sauce and served with a generous portion of vegetables.
I think we went way too overboard in ordering that night, but boy, was the food totally worth it! Next came our pastas and raviolis! The Penne Pollo Pesto is a chicken pasta with a great portion of chicken, unlike anywhere else I've ever tried made in a creamy garlic pesto sauce with nuts, and the herbs added to the garnish added that dash of spice to the sweet creamy taste. The Fettuccine Italian Sausage for me was that marvellous fusion of Italian sausages and pasta! Served really hot, the sausages were cooked to perfection, were neither too soft nor too rubbery, and the sauce in which they were made proved to be the most amazing foil to the fettucine which was boiled and made so well (making me wonder when I'll achieve that level of homemade pasta!!). The raviolis that my friends ordered were of minced beef & herbs and chicken & porcini mushroom. I only tasted the one with beef and the size of the ravioli was definitely more than the usual and it was stuffed bountifully with the meat, proving that their homemade ravioli could indeed be made by them!
As of this weren't enough, we went ahead and stuffed our mouths with the desserts because we noticed a lot of people coming in late just to pick up the desserts and we didn't want to miss out on it. So, I ordered the tiramisu and my friends ordered the pastizzi with chocolate & ricotta and berry & custard. The tiramisu was served in a plastic container but the taste of it made me forget the way it was served. Undoubtedly one of the best I've tasted and I've not tasted a good many! The sweet pastizzis were served with a scoop of ice cream and although I'm usually not a huge fan of a hot-n-cold combination, I totally fell in love with the berry custard pastizzi, the stuffing of the warm custard went so so well with the vanilla ice cream, which made me move over my favourite of sizzling brownie with ice cream combo. And, some good news - they have pastizzis of a savoury nature as well as eats like chicken & mushroom, chorizo, etc.
Now the service - the servers were very courteous and attentive, especially the Italian guy who was fun to have a conversation with. Although the mains took quite some time to reach the table, we were more than happy to find that the dishes were freshly made and served.
On the whole, this place is one I'd love to frequent and recommend to anyone wanting to enjoy some superb Italian fare, and what's more, at reasonable prices!!! Need more? Naaah 😀

Seriously yummy food for a really dece price 👌 casual vibes - bring ya dog and sit out the front. Service can be a little rushed but it's all sick. Highly recommend. As they say in Rome 'delisho' 🤘

My friends and I were really excited about coming here for a nice warm Italian meal and the pastizzis. The pastries were a great fun start to the meal and the staff were amazing - really cheery and accommodating - and the ambience was nice and lighthearted. The marinara pasta was tasty enough but the carbonara we ordered was hard and overcooked in hot oil to the point where there were bits of cooked egg in the pasta rather than the soft, poached goodness one would expect. Disappointed at the quality of what one would almost class an Italian staple.
Ezequiel Camo
True italian, we have tasted the ravioli spinash & ricotta, the chef special pancetta pasta and it was just perfect. Take care, plates are generous.

I love pastizzi cafe. I love puff pastry and I love savory pastries and this is literally those two things in one. I could literally eat 12-15 in a single sitting and then take some ravioli home and eat that too. Call the cops I don't care it's not a crime to love pastizzi this much but if it was I'd be screwed.
Meryl Stewart
I went there once only a few years ago - had pasta - half way home - gastric! Vomiting and diarrhea. I live in Alice Street, so I was walking home when this struck. Went in and told them the next day - got the shrugged shoulders response. I'm only giving it 1.5 because the pasta was actually tasty - pity it gave me food poisoning.
Megan J
Seriously good pasta, they know what they are doing! And those flaky pastizzi with so many flavours of filling, completely delicious. I love how genuine the service is and how understated the whole little cafe is. Plus, you can takeaway some frozen pastizzi and relive the dream at home. I had the chicken and mushroom pastizzi and the (homemade) beef and herb ravioli and would highly recommend both! PS: the serving sizes are super generous!
Mashimaro
Came here for dinner. Friendly customer.
Feta and ricotta pastizzi was delicious. Chilli con carne pastizzi was dry.
Ordered main ravioli chicken and porchini mushroom with pink sauce and spaghetti prawns with rocket and napoletana sauce, both were alright.
The octopus salad was too sour and chewy.
Chris Waghorn
Before leaving Newtown after some doughnuts, and gelato, I wanted to quickly show my sister the Pastizzi Café. A place a good friend introduced me to a few years ago. I was there to show her one thing, the Pastizzi. They have a whole menu of Maltese-Italian fusion food which looks really tasty. But the thing we go there for is the Pastizzi. I hope this doesn’t expose me as a “Food Blogger” fraud as I only go there for one side of what they do. You know what, honestly, I am a fraud. But that’s another story.
Leon
It's ok if the crab and prawn spaghetti was underwhelming because the pastizzis at Pastizzi Cafe is really awesome!! The flaky parcels of pastizzi came in an array of flavours including blueberry custard, spinach and ricotta and chocolate etc. It was so nice that I bought a frozen pack home!!
Natalie Dëë
Love the service here, came on a Saturday night and took my chance without a booking, they were so welcoming and accommodating that we (2) were seated within minutes in the back which is a new project to extend the area for patrons.
Much needed as the food is absolutely delicious! If you like pasta, don't bother going anywhere else.
The pasta is Al dente and the sauces *insert drool image*
Great place to go with friends and/or family.
Andrew Micallef
Pastizzi were to die for especially coming from someone of Maltese descent. Rest of the food was also quite well done and was definitely impressed. I'll be back for more pastizzi very soon!
Natasha
Went with my husband who had the pan seared veal in bianca sauce, while i had the chicken n mushroom ravioli excellent stuff! Great casual dining place!
Kevin To
A bit of wait for the food to come out at this busy place but boy is it worth it. The Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli in Chilli and Garlic Oil sauce is amazing 👌! Grabbed one of those Spinach and Ricotta Pastizzi on the way out (yes more Spinach and Ricotta) and scoffed it down after the first bite, delicious. Definitely give this place a try. Will be back here again when I'm in the area.
FoodLuva
This place just continues to deliver. I love their pastizzis, I've never had a bad one here. Make sure you ask for the 'famous' garlic tomato sauce, so good!

Wow. If you're in the mood for some cool cultural flavours, sexy pastry, great staff & hopefully blessed with great weather, this place is worth a visit.
As it is pastry, can get quite greasy (sad) though one pastry is enough to leave you wanting more. Chicken & Mushroom fillings were in the process of being made so I opted for the Chicken & Chorizo filling, my friend had a Chickpea filling and few others (goldfish memory!).
Kim gave us the option to have it reheated which we gladly took. I have a tendency to play around with pastry to see how well it's been cooked and so I peeled the pastry- wallah some salivating pastry layers!
Fillings weren't mindblowing, quite strong in flavour and the chicken was nicely shredded whilst the chorizo was mashed up.

Had a taste of my friend's Chickpea pastry and was potent in an Indian spice, if you're into that, that's a goodie too.

Will definitely return for the Chicken & Mushroom next time!
Kirk Harris
Still one of my favourite Italian places in Sydney. Good prices too! Their home made ravioli is Incredible. Pumpkin and ricotta all day long! And that pink sauce! Wow.
I don't even have to mention the pastizzi's... That is how they got their name...
Sarahversuscarbs
Awesome pastizzi, although they often sell out of popular ones in the evenings. The handmade ravioli is also good and very well-priced. My favourite is the chilli con carne pastizzi. It's no frills, easy, and affordable. You can buy the pastizzi frozen to take home too! They make for a great snack.
RBkN
This is one of the best value for money places with excellent flavoured food, great atmosphere and most friendly service that ive been to in Sydney. Generous portions of pastas and pastries are must try!! Definitely coming back for more

Coming from the inner suburbs of Melbournes inner north i struggled to find traditional/authentic Maltese fare that was consistently delicious and fresh. My wife and i have been going to Lenny and Team since i moved to Sydney 7 years ago. Wonderful food always prompt friendly service. Crab and Prawn pasta is the winner every-time. Don't agree with Martin, we visit a few times a month and it only place that always has consistent exceptional service. Keep up the good work.
Martin Newman
I've been hanging out to eat some mains here for ages after coming here for pastizzis and ogling the meals being brought out. Of an evening Pastizzi Cafe is always busy (heaving) and it's not a big place, so I was glad we could get a table without a reservation. As background, their pastizzis are numerous and great, from savoury to sweet, and they also have an incredible homemade tomato sauce you can buy. We've gone there frequently for takeaway snacks. When we dined in the food, when it came, lived up to expectations: penne chicken pesto pasta (buttery, textured, cheesy, fine), seafood hot pot (a treasure trove of crustaceans, fish and molluscs, and big enough for two) and crab and prawn spaghetti (served on a monumental pile of angel hair pasta). What made it not a four out of five review was the service, which took ages. They also forgot our drinks and looked blankly when I went up to the counter to pay the bill after being unable to get anyone's attention from our table. Great food, but they're clearly overloaded in the kitchen.
Randy H.
Love this place. Great food and just genuinely polite, nice people who love what they do. Great place to kick back with friends until the early hours.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
Old time favourite serving up a varying selection of savoury and sweet golden, flaky pastizzis. Today we had ricotta, chilli con carne, chicken and mushroom and salmon, ricotta and dill. All were delicious. Be sure to ask for a side of sauce - tomatoey and garlicky, it's the perfect accompaniment.
Joy
Food is super slow.....and the taste is definitely not worth that long time of waiting.....the restaurant seems to be popular, so im sure they won't care about losing one customer
Queenie K
No matter how busy they are, they always give great polite service at the end of the day!

I've first been here nearly 5 years ago, and the consistency of the food and service has always been there.

The main favourite for my family would be the crab and prawn pasta with extra chilli, and for this meal we had a mix of pastizzis (plus some to go), with bruschetta as entree. Plus we had the bacon and chilli with penne.

Will always be back no matter what! Delicious food and great service? Check, check! :)

A friend invited us here for a celebratory dinner and it was another chance to sample the wonders of Newtown again. The shop was very homely with some Newtown touches of dim lighting and some artistic graffiti on the wall. Their speciality are the pastizzis and in addition to the cheese or pea variety, they have added a wide range or sweet and savoury fillings to these delectable goodies. The triangle shaped pastries could do no wrong. Although kept under a heat lamp, you could tell they are constantly refilled to retain freshness and heat in the filling. The pastry is light and crispy and the fillings of ricotta, beef & dark ale, chicken and bacon to chilli con carne all work!

The main menu reflects many Italian classics with no fancy play on words. I love this as the pasta dishes are generous and the flavours so honest to their routes, you would think you are sitting on the coastline in Sorrento. I had the spaghetti vongole and never would have though the amount of vongole would surpass what I had sampled in Malta but it did! The vongole itself was plump and fresh, the fruitiness of the olive oil permeated the dish which also carried white wine flavours and a proper kick from the birds eye chilli. All you needed to add was parmesan and black pepper and it was close to perfection.

I sampled the Penne Arrabiata and loved napolitana sauce that was better than most Italian restaurants I have been to. There are so many bad napolitana sauces out there because it’s so tempting and easy to take short cuts but when done right it creates a clean sauce that has depth of flavour with the acidity of the tomatoes removed.

I love this place. Everything is so understated but the cooking is so true to form and the prices actually make sense because for once, you are not getting charged the same price for a vegetarian pasta as you would for one with meat – simple!

Give this place a shot if you want to try some genuine Italian dishes that you would find only in Italy itself. The service is very good as they are fast, efficient and very friendly!

It's called the Pastizzi Cafe, so of course it serves pastizzi. But it's pleasantly surprising to see that it also serves more substantial meals like pasta & lasagna. We stuck with the pastizzi, and there were so many different variant! Savoury and sweet, classic to gourmet, all of them looks good. This time I tried the Beef & Dark Ale and the Apple & Cinnamon. The beef was moist and tender, pastry crisp. The apple was just what you expect. Great light meal options or perfect to have catching up with friends.

Always great food and service. At 7:10pm the place was packed, always a good sign. Had the Caprese salad, garlic bread to start. The beef and herb ravioli with arrabbiata sauce was delicious. The fungi cream sauce veal with vegetables was amazing. Big portions and totally satisfying. Sadly didn't have room for any pastizzis or dessert.

Consistent and confident. My absolute first choice in Newtown if I can beat the line. Love this place, the smell and the vibe is alluring. I dream about pastizzi... The veal is to die for.

Perfect ravioli!

This place has lots and lots of menu options (too many for an indecisive person like me), uses fresh ingredients and has friendly service. The pastizzis are yummy and fresh. I would definitely recommend booking as all the tables were full!

Wow. It's unfortunate that my experience hasn't quite matched that of other reviews. We walked in and right away staff was in our face wondering if we're ordering takeaway. I stated that we're just in for coffee and as one staff member smirked to the other we were ushered to a table. It felt really weird as he hovered over us wondering what we were going to order. I didn't even get a chance to have a look at the offerings behind the counter. He left us and after never came back. We walked out after sitting there waiting to have our order taken. I will never set foot in that place again - there are plenty of other places in Newtown to go to.

My Aussie friends tend to love this place, but I have to say as a Malteser I'm a bit of a purist and love it traditional. The ricotta pastizzi are done well and the raviolli are also quite traditional - but always go with the napolitana sauce to keep it traditional!

This is my favourite Italian restaurant in Sydney. Extremely affordable, the pastizzis are absolutely to die for, and it's bring your own wine! There are many items on the menu which will keep me coming lots more times.

Have been many times for breakfast here as the pastizzi's are made quite nice. Though some new creations within their savoury selection of pastizzi's wouldn't be bad as the same menu has been around for years.

Though a big disappointment this Saturday was the cleanliness.! The table we sat at, the napkins were damp in the napkin holder along with a roach caught in between the napkins. Furthermore the young woman who served us behind the counter was so unpresentable with her attire wore a grotty unwashed blue and white striped dress with dirt marks and a big sauce stain on the front of it. You would expect just opened for breakfast clean clothing would have been appropriate and the norm.

Shame that its dropped in presentation.

Nice local cafe with good food and friendly service. The pastizzi is a flaky pastry with fillings: you can choose from many flavours savoury or sweet. Also tried the pastas: ravioli very fresh , 4 cheese gnocchi very cheesy. Would come back!
Belle.
Literally my favourite cafe ever! Beautiful atmosphere, friendly wait staff and the food is top quality. Authentic home made meals and the most amazing pastizzi's ever. Favourites would have to be cheese and spinach, pea and chicken and mushroom...: The meals are quite large so I usually share a main with my partner meaning we can both have pastizzi's and desert too. Hehe. :)

I had a fabulous meal at the Cafe! the portion is big and ingredients are authentic. the whole place was buzzing and had a very happy feel about it. they have both indoor and outdoor seating. the staff were amazing.
Its definitely worth a try guys!

I seriously love the pasta here = the ravioli is absolutely creamy and buttery and theres nothing else like it. The atmosphere is warm and the customer service is attentive. Try to book as the locals love it here. The pastizzis are deliciously crispy.

This place goes excellent pastizzis with a whole lot of choice which was surprising, I found the chicken chorizo ones great! Really authentic, anyone with a Maltese background will enjoy this place.

Pastizzi cafe does buttery melt in the mouth pastizzi, with ricotta and spinach being one of the stand out combinations. Or if you prefer something sweet, the apple pastizzi are really good. It's a great place for a casual, quick and affordable bite to eat.

Popped in tonight for dinner at 5.30pm and tables were all reserved so we grabbed takeaway Pastizzi. We were charged for 8 but only 7 ended up in the bag.
Anyway, the Pastizzi reheated really well in the oven at home. The ricotta Pastizzi is much better than any you can buy in a packet at the supermarket. Flaky and buttery pastry filled with tasty ricotta which wasn't too wet or dry.
If you want to eat in definitely call ahead as even early on a Wednesday they were full!
The food was good. Service let it down though. Asked before hand if they had certain dietary options, which they said was fine, and once we got there they told us they were not available.

You got spooned 🍴

Newtown, SydneyPastizzi Cafe is an institution in the inner west of Sydney having opened 8 years ago and originating from the Maltese cafe in Surry Hills. Located at the south end of Newtown's famous King Street, an area that has had an explosion of new cafes and bars open in recent times, Pastizzi Cafe is a is pillar of tradition offering authentic Maltese and Italian food.

Casual, homely restaurant with a no fuss feel. The pastizzis were great, our favorite was probably the beef and ale - rich and flavoursome with a flakey pastry. The crab and prawn ravioli was home made and the pasta skins themselves were really silky and thin, almost like a dumpling. Chicken cacciatore tasted like home cooking (tasty but not amazing). Would return for the pasta and pastizzis

Best Maltese & Italian in Newtown. I've come here for many years. The service is always good and the food is great.. I can't understand the negative reviews, but what I can say is just give it a try and think for yourself..

Service needs to improve.... The service, workers and place is a disgrace. Ironically the food is great. Would I go back? NO

Great food, horrible service. I love the food here yet no matter how many times I give them a chance based on the food quality I am always disappointed by the service. I often get barked at rather than spoken to like a human being and the girls behind the counter snicker at customers together. I have never left a bad review for anything and am easily pleased but the last time I went here was the final straw. Newtown is a competitive area and they should consider treating patrons with more respect regardless of whether they are eating in or getting take away

The beautiful seafood mince was sealed in a thin pasta and the ginger broth brings out the freshness of seafood. I was blown away how wonderful this dish was and would come back for it just for it!

On a visit to Sydney, my friend M...took me to Pastizzi Café, swearing it to be one of his favourite places in Sydney. I was convinced then, and it’s remained one of my favourite places to visit for a quick snack when in the Inner West...We got two pastizzi – one savoury chicken and chorizo, and one sweet apple cinnamon. K devoured the savoury chicken and chorizo, allowing me just a single bite to enjoy its slightly spicy tomato-based mix. “I’m in a sugar coma, I need something savoury instead!” he insisted.
Daphne
I would have loved to try every single pastizzi but that would have been overdoing it considering we only had 6 of us and each of us were getting a pasta main each!
MissPiggyEats
We decide to stick with the savoury and I limit myself to just three seeing as they are not exactly a health food with all that flaky pastry. After drooling at the counter for about 5 minutes I ended up choosing Spinach and Ricotta, Pea, and Salmon Dill and Ricotta.

Except for The Original Maltese Cafe on Crown Street this is the only other place I know of in Sydney where you can find a large range of freshly cooked pastizzis. This popular cafe seems to have a few more pastizzi choices and serves up very decent sized
Mr Shawn & Miss Chicken
Originally on Crown St in the city, this cafe by the same original owners serves fresh and frozen pastizzis, ravioli and pasta. Each of the pastizzis are only $1.80, so it's hard to choose just a few. We vote for the pea, a bite of smooshy green goodness inside like thick pea soup, and because it's close to breakfast, a bacon and egg one...

After the Food Tour of Cabramatta , a group of us decided to get together again and explore another suburb. It was decided that John would play host this time and show us around his neighbourhood, Newtown. The first stop is Eveleigh Farmer's Markets . Rya

Popular with people on the run and popular with people willing to wait for a table to chow down on a crispy and flaky pastizzi, strong coffee, kanolli, home-style pasta or even baked rabbit.

With the plethora of options in Newtown near and around the cinemas, take it as my devotion to the hallowed pastizzi that I would walk about 15 minutes away from the cinema in order to have them for dinner. Before seeing the explosively funny and banging

Mmm... I have a new addiction. Pastizzi Cafe in Newtown is the modern day version of 1950's Maltese Cafe on Crown Street in Surry Hills. It is still a family run business and it shows in their friendly service. They stock and serve hundreds of golden filo

Bellissimo!. Pastizzi is one of my Top 3 places in Sydney to eat! A cheap and cheerful hole in the wall, you will be pleasantly surprised by the robust flavours, large servings and authentic flavours of all of their meals, especially the pastas! The melt in your mouth Pastizzis are the perfect entree, with a Greek salad as a side. Whatever you do leave room for the made in house Tiramisu. It's an absolute must. You'll likely walk out of there with entrees, main, dessert coffee and drinks for well under $100 for two.

Word has gotten out about this place so it's worthwhile reserving a table and if it's a hot night request one outside.

First time last night and absolutely loved this place, great fresh home style euro foods & service.
We will be back Pastizzi crew!

Ripped off. Make sure you count your money out aloud as you hand it to the cashier. Handed over $80 in 20s and was told it was only $60. Cashier refused to believe me point blank and when he was sure everyone was watching had the audacity to slam $20 on the counter, and proclaim 'well if it means that much to you...' Really? Hell of a tip for a few bags of frozen product. Enjoy your money guys, don't spend it all at once!

Like. Good Food. Shop could do with a little revamp. Pastizzi's are nice but can be really dry. Coffee not so good at all. Service is ok.

Best spaghetti and meatballs around - love this place !

One of the best cheap eats in Newtown. We love grabbing a cheap breakfast of pastizzis and coffee from here on the weekend. There are many interesting flavours (recommend the chilli con carne and the bacon and egg), and they are very well priced. The coffee is average but good enough to get me out of bed.
I've had dinner here once but didn't rate it. There was so much pasta in the bowls that I was put off.

Greedy at Customer's Expense. I can not comment on food as I didn't get that far! We dropped by on a Friday night following an early theatre show. It was busy but the middle aged waiter rushed up to us on the footpath asking "Table for Two?" We said "yes" and were quickly ushered into the busy restaurant and left standing at the counter with the waiter disappearing. We were ignored by other busy staff. When "our" waiter next appeared we asked for our table. He said "out the back" so we started moving in that direction but were told to stop. Next he said a waitress was getting the table ready for us and to "just wait". When the waitress appeared from the back area we still could not go though and were told "You need to wait it's busy out there". After 20 minutes of being "held" we walked out. It became obvious that there was no table and we were simply being lined up - we had not wanted to wait and only entered the restaurant as we were told a table was available. It was clearly a tactic to maximise customers but for us this approach was a turn off. We walked along the street to another Italian restaurant where we were treated in a respectful manner.
Alan_downunder
Great food-crap waiter. The food is always consistent and good, greek waiter there (45 yrs old) what a waste of oxygen - he is cranky and short tempered, enough to put you off wanting to go to this place.

Really good... bring cash though. We're only relatively new to Newtown (3 years) and think this place is amazing. Pasitzzi's are brilliant, the red wine one (I think thats it) is worth the extra $1.. it is absolutely phenominal. The pastas are great. To be fair, I had a mushroom special there recently and probably wouldn't have ordered that again.. .way to little food for a main. But stick with the main-stayers and you cannot go wrong. EFTPOS minimum is annoying (this one is $20!) so we don't go there as often as we'd like.

Good times. Bought back memories of my time spend in Malta. Loved the mushy pea pastizzis and the kinnie. Wished there was a place like this in Melbourne!
