Review Gigi Pizzeria - Newtown

Ka Ling (Drkyling)
I’m amazed at how good this vegan pizza place is and I’m ready to visit again! Great pizza, great taste, you don’t notice there’s no cheese or meats! My fave was the broccoli and beyond sausage pizza. A little salty but the little balls of “mozzarella” was almost indistinguishable from real cheese. The other 2 pizzas were really good too. I like the crust - nice chew and not too soggy. The appetizers were good too! Arancini was great with the mushroom taste but a little gritty without the cheese. Rosemary focaccia came like flatbread 😅 we thought it was pizza for a while. My only complaint is that we were chased out after 1.5h and we would have loved to stay longer!

Pizza here us fabulous! Had to wait in a line but it was worth it!! The potato pizza was the best! The crust is soft and has a chew. The toppings are full of flavour. Would come here more often if it wasn’t so busy.

Great experience. I don’t think I’d have known it was vegan if you hadn’t told me! There was lots of variety. We had the arancini ai funghi porcini, gnocchi al forno, lasagne, funghi e radicchio pizza and the sausage and peperoncino pizza. They were all tasty, but the gnocchi was a little heavy and dense and the pizza is Neapolitan-style with a soggy centre. If that’s your thing, you’ll love it! The standout to me was the arancini, which was super crunchy and so fragrant. For dessert we had the cheesecake and the cannoli. One of those “are you sure this isn’t dairy?” moments. Staff were so, so lovely - kind and attentive. Covid protocols all observed; doors wide open, staff all masked and order and pay through the app. Would definitely recommend.

My partner and I had the best food here! I am Italian and the pizza dough is on point! Even better than some pizzeria places back in Italy. We had the atlantico pizza with plant-based smoked salmon🤤, porcini mushrooms arancini, pizza regina and dessert...of course! We picked cannoli as I have been struggling with finding plant-based versions since becoming vegan. Very similar to the dairy ones and so good! Will definitely come back. The only downside is that prices are a bit to high.

I remember Gigi being really excellent before, but this time I’m disappointed. There was so much oil on all the pizzas, and to be honest, we didn’t like the cheese. It just tasted really bland. Music was also too loud so we couldn’t talk. Pizzas were good but just very pricey!

Amazing food and drinks, we really enjoyed our night out. Pizza is really light, the ingredients are fresh and super tasty. Make sure to try the schiacciata, it's something that only few restaurants make. About the desert, tiramisu super soft and tasty, it reminded me my mum tiramisù, so good!!!

Nice flavours on the pizza the smell from the truffle potato one was incredible. I just thought the base was really droopy and soggy when you tried to pick it up. For the price ($28 each) I guess I just expected more.

Amazing quality pizza and great customer service. Second pic is the gluten free pizza and it’s folded to make it crispy, the bread is a really good gluten free one. The first pic is the spinach, cauliflower one that was great.
Spice Is Life
By default, gigi will always have a special place in our heart! My wife and I first met in gigi on a first date back in 2016! It has been a while since we dined here, so took a box of Calzone for takeaway. Despite not being eaten straight away at the restaurant, quality is still as good when dined at home. You have us as loyal customers for life!

Awesome vegan restaurant with delicious wood fired pizza!! Loved the crust and flavours of everything on the pizzas but the tomato based pizza we got had way too much sauce on it which made the base way too soggy to pick up. Otherwise, experience overall was great and the staff were super friendly.
The Weekend Foodie
First time trying vegan pizza , walked past gigi's many many times and vegan pizza just never appealed... until we started receiving a ton of recommendations to go to Gigi's. Seeing people line up for vegan pizza. We were curious. We ordered take away, still busy during covid! We ordered funghi - i preferred this,it was delicious. True wood fire pizza and full of flavour. We also ordered Cavolo - the one with cauliflower puree. My husband preferred this. I found it to be a little bit too salty. We will come back to try their other pizzas!

The pizza base was on the chewy side for this kind, otherwise it was good. I wasn't game to try any with the cheese substitutes so I got the potato one and it had a lot of potato and strong flavours, although the bigger toppings were thrown about haphazardly, making it harder to eat. The pizza price is in line with other good pizzas but the sides were very expensive and not even very good. In particular, the minuscule serve of tiramisu was very boring - it seemed like the cream substitute worked well but they seriously skimped on the coffee and alcohol and anything else that normally goes into it.

Everything on the menu sounded so good it was hard to choose but we settled on the arancini balls, fungi pizza and the eggplant pizza. They were all delicious! The food came out quickly considering the restaurant was full.<br/>100% recommend!

Vegan food may be getting up to some rather marvellous things in the last few years, but I’ve always drawn the line at vegan pizza. Surely a dish that mandates the addition of cheese in its most traditional form can’t possibly taste good without it, right?  And frankly, if it weren’t for Jan and her recommendation of Gigi Pizzeria, I would’ve gone on happily believing the same forevermore.
That Vegan Dad
There is a MASSIVE difference between Italian and Aussie pizzas, and the pizza at Gigi’s is one of the best.<br/><br/>The key is keep it simple with fresh, natural ingredients and the flavours will speak for themselves.<br/><br/>Authentic methods and ideas makes Gigi’s a true hot spot in Newtown, NSW.

Very nice menu. Would prefer if they could had english translation. I must tell u, the calzone which had the spinach filling was sooo awesome.Best calzone i ever had. But i was bit disappoinred by pizza. It sounded like indian roti with raw veg on top of it. Probably they cud use some soy milk to make it softer n keep it vegan.
Ninahooo
Delicious vegan pizzas with superb pizza base. Small range of food on the menu, but done well. Pizza base was thin and light. We started with arancini balls which were really tasty. The highlights for our group was the pizzas, and my favs were the cavolo and patate.

There are a few things to love about this place. I absolutely adore that this is a vegan pizzeria that doesn’t really advertise as such. I didn’t see it on the walls of the restaurant, or signage, or the menu. They just happen to not use animal products. Now, I like meat, but I think it’s much healthier for the planet to eat less of it, and for humans to eat less meat than we do. Having a delicious option to meat and not make a fuss about it (and serve negronis and good Italian wine too). Well, that’s worth celebrating.

Have you ever eaten a pizza and felt healthy? This is the place. It would be hard to forget your cherry tomatoes pizza. It's my favourite. And Gigi's salad is so simple yet spectacular. A simple menu, simple presentation, but consistent and quality. The restaurant is always crowded. Good music, good vibe. Highly recommend.

Great place in the heart of Newtown with a cozy and lively evening atmosphere. Had a delicious vegan calzone ,and staff were super friendly and funny ! Will be returning for sure :)

REALLY GOOD FOOD BUT,<br/>the service was the worst I’ve ever experienced. Waiters were impatient, edgy and rude. The way they placed our items on the table was very harsh I felt like the plates are gonna break on me. The waiter who brought our food just put it all hastily said the names in Italian (which none of us spoke) and rushed off before we can ask what’s what. When the second round of food came he didn’t even bother saying the names he just placed them on the table, very awkwardly positioned on top of each other and left. They got bothered when we asked for tomato sauce or ketchup, they said they’re Italians and have only Italian sauces??!? We did inform the manager who seemed like he didn’t want to be informed because after every remark I’d make he would go back to speaking about food quality disregarding staff quality. When asked why is it that it’s all men that work there the guy sarcastically said “because women are meant to stay home”. I kind of accepted the sarcasm but after seeing the attitudes of the waiters and the negativity coming out of them while serving us, I highly doubt it was sarcasm in the first place. <br/>Every time our plates our empty they’d come ask if they can take them when in fact our cutlery was still positioned in a way that the reflects that we are still eating - someone should teach them etiquette of eating. <br/>At the end of our dinner, after they’ve taken away almost everything on the table a friend of mine was still eating and there was still a fair amount of food in her plate and her cutlery still signaled that she’s eating and the waiter still stuffed his fingers across the food and took the plate without asking. She called him back and he put it back without apologizing but she was too disgusted by the way his hands touched the food and by the service itself that she couldn’t finish eating. <br/><br/>The good and the meh:<br/>The pizzas and the calezone were amazing. The arancinis were overrated. The prices are bit above average considering what goes into the pizza.

ordered a peperone rosso for pick up.Neither the girl who took the order on the phone or on the menu it was written that it doesnt have cheese.<br/>Talked to that stupid arab guy who works in the restaurant said that didnt u read the menu,i said i did but its nowhere written.Just had a bite and threw the rest in the trashbin outside the restaurant.Better to have a toasted bread and put some tomato sauce on it instead of paying 23 dollars for it.Such a bunch of losers and hypocrites.

Delicious VEGAN pizza! Highly recommended. Ordered Bianca (very good), Cavolo, and the apple parmesan salad (very well-balanced flavour). <br/>Place is crowded esp dinner time. Need to wait for a couple minutes for the line up (we came in 5 persons).
Tummy Buddy
Best vegan pizza ever! The pizza dough is exceptional and cooked to perfection. Our favourite is the Melazanne, absolutely delicious! The pizza is honestly that good you don’t even realize they don’t use traditional cheese. Definitely worth a visit. It does get super busy on weekends and unfortunately you can’t book, but it is worth the wait!! Would recommend trying on a quieter night of the week.

You can't go wrong at Gigi's, the fact that it's right next door to my brother's place and service epic pizza is a win-win. I was taken here for my birthday and it did not disappoint. Pick any pizza and you are in good hands. If you hav not been, there is somethign wrong with you.
Gabi
High-quality food with a lovely atmospheric vibe. Great staff and delicious pizzas. Recommend this for any vegans looking for a yummy bite to eat.

Great ambiance that’s good for big groups but average pizza and service. However, the price was very reasonable. We had a bottle of wine and 3 pizzas and it came down to ~25 pp. We had:<br/>1. Funghi e Raddicchio: 3/5. This one was quite disappointing as mushrooms are usually my favorite. It came with blue cheese which to be fair, was very clearly written on the menu. I guess someone who’s a bigger blue cheese fan would appreciate it more but I thought that mushrooms go much better with truffle oil than blue cheese. Also, there was barely any mushrooms on the topping. <br/>2. Cavolo: 4.5/5. This one is my favorite! Well seasoned and very tasty. <br/>3. Asparagus: 3.5/5. This one was surprisingly good. I’ve never really had asparagus on pizzas before and it’s very refreshing. However, could have come with more asparagus.

loved this place so much! there is always a line to get in, and it makes sense as to why it is the no.1 vegan pizza joint! their service was exceptional for how busy they were, and we even changed our order and they were fine with it. you get served with complimentary peanuts (in the shells) which was different but nice little appetiser. we also ordered the mushroom arancini as a starter, and those were absolutely delicious. the outside was more crispy than usual but it was tasty.<br/><br/>for pizza, we ordered the pumpkin puree calzone, loaded with spinach, mushroom and tomatoes. this was so flavoursome and different, and the pizza dough was so fresh and warm. very pleased.

👍🏼- All I can say is wow! I’ve never had pizza as amazing as this. This rustic, chic vegan pizzeria is buzzing with energy and I honestly understand why! Their pizzas are phenomenal and their desserts are no exception. The menu is traditional and authentic despite being all vegan. As a vegan restaurant, their non dairy cheeses are one of the best and hard to replicate; I’ve never had cheese as delicious. We ordered mixed marinated olives and arancini as entrees, quite nice but nothing to rave about. Their patate pizza was my favourite, absolute hit. Also, vegan cannoli ? YES PLEASE. So good. I’m so appreciative of the time and effort that goes into their food; its honestly incredible. Staff are super friendly and attentive; and always going out of their way to assist you no matter how busy it is.<br/><br/><br/>👎🏻- The space is quite small and you WILL be waiting for quite a while as there is a line out the door on most occasions; have been left waiting for over an hour outside which I would never usually do but for the food here; so worth it. Also, it is pricey for a group so be prepared; however for the quality ingredients I think it’s fair, some may disagree. <br/><br/>Food: 5/5 !!!!<br/>Presentation: 4/5<br/>Service: 5/5<br/>Location: 3/5

Amazinggg! <br/>You wouldn't even be able to tell the food here is vegan that's how nice everything tastes. We got to the restaurant a few minutes after it opened and didn't need to wait but just a few minutes later there was a line forming outside, so get here quick!<br/>We had lovely service and I have been craving their food ever since, will for sure be back!

Fifteen minute wait on a Sunday night. The porcini arancini was expensive at $10 for three balls. However, the potato/truffle pizza and the calzone con cavolo were a decent size. The calzone was especially filling. I found the flavours subtle and pleasantly vegetably tasting. Not a place to go if your friends are greasy/salty/meaty pizza fans =)
Ned
I am certainly not opposed to the idea of vegan pizzas and the pizzas here are definitely premium and quality. However the fact is that the taste simply does not compare. Absolute must visit if you are vegan, but for the rest of us there's not much to make Gigi's stand out above the crowd with the crazy abundance of good italian around.

I had never tried vegan Pizza before but now I became a fan I love the pizza here always seem to be a line outside as well so must be a favourite we ordered the mushroom pizza. And I loved it .A vegan friend recommended me this place

Just when you thought that you couldn’t get any more creative with your gourmet pizzas Gigi Pizzeria at Enmore will surprise you! I don’t eat potatoes just because of carbohydrates but I wish that you tried the Patate Pizza with a generous sprinkle of black truffle pate. Gigi’s puts the G in Gourmet Pizza!

*Ate there before it became vegan* One of the best Italian meals I've ever had, vanilla gelato was out of this world.  Will try again to see if vegan version measures up.

Honestly I preferred the old gigis where there was meat on offer for the pizzas. I thought it was the best in Sydney. Thought I try vegan pizza.although I miss my meats and sausages on my pizzs I was not disappointed though. Prices have gone up though. Staff are excellent and love their job.
Teresa
I had never tried vegan pizza and became a fan. The dough is perfectly cooked and the toppings are original and tasty. You can’t go wrong with the roasted pumpkin calzone.

Just Amazing pizza made with love and skills!<br/>My personal opinion all the pizzas are super good but my favorite is the one with Cavolo.<br/><br/>Remember to save some little space for desserts which are incredible.<br/><br/>I love this place.

I'm not one for rating restaurants 5/5 on a regular basis, but when a vegan Tiramisu is better than all Tiramisus you've tried in Sydney, that's something.<br/><br/>Gigi's, one of the easiest restaurants to locate in Newtown given the ever-present queues outside, is a vegan Italian restaurant (PIZZA WITHOUT CHEESE). After 35 minutes of anticipation standing in line, we ordered the following:<br/><br/>1) Arancini al funghi porcini<br/>2) Patate<br/>3) Calzone con Cavolo<br/>4) Tiramisu di Gigi<br/><br/>The Arancini and Patate were simple, traditional and had just enough flavour and richness to make you want to try other delicacies on the menu.<br/><br/>The Calzone con Cavolo was a strong recommendation, and I can now see why. Hands down the best calzone I've had. Delectable, piping hot and packed with flavour - definitely a must-have.<br/><br/>Going to an Italian restaurant and not ordering the Tiramisu there is a punishable offence. It was indeed the rightful heir to the Calzone, and boy did it succeed in treating us subjects well. Best Tiramisu in Sydney (so far).<br/><br/>Dim lighting, warm service and delightful, innovative food makes this a perfect date-night spot.<br/><br/>I'm a proud carnivore, but credit should be given where it is due, and Gigi has simply been amazing. Overall, the ratings would be - <br/><br/>Food - 9/10<br/>Ambience - 8/10<br/>Service - 9/10<br/>Value for money - 9/10<br/>P.S. Unbelievably, the only 2 restaurants I've rated 5/5 don't serve meat. Damn.

Love the pizzas here! There always seem to be a line outside as well so must be a favourite. We ordered two entrees: potato croquettes and garlic bread. Both were okay, nothing amazing. The croquettes needed a sauce I think. The mains on the other hand are divine. We ordered the cavolo and melanzane pizza. The cavolo was my absolute favourite, it had a cauliflower purée which was so tasty. The pizza dough was also great, and cooked perfectly. Nice and thin base with thick edges. If I were to return, I would probably just order pizzas and not entrees. A great dinner though!
Alice
Absolutely adore this place. So nice to have an all vegan restaurant with such an imaginative menu. I can’t stop thinking about the cannoli. Can’t wait to come back!
Muntaha Khan
Gigi was better before it joined the latest vegan fad of the neighbourhood. It's clearly a business decision, as no pizza business owner would suddenly stop eating meat. The pizzas are still good, but unfortunately no longer fills the stomach and thus can't justify the premium.
Sarah Djabir
Hands down my favourite pizzeria in Sydney.<br/>I absolutely love all of their pizzas, the flavour combinations are amazing. Their cannoli is great too!
Green Gourmet Giraffe
I swithered over which pizza to try.  There were lots that appealed.  Finally I chose the Cavolo ($22) with cauliflower puree, artichokes, pinenuts, capers, currants, garlic, parsley and extra virgin olive oil (photo at top of page).  It was magnificent.  It would be enough to convince me to go without cheese on pizzas, as the flavour was just lovely and the toppings were just right.  The base like Sylvia's was lovely.  Very thin in the middle and puffy and slightly charred on the edge.
Aimee.
Extensive Italian menu full of pizza, pasta, salad and wine. We ordered the mushroom pizza, eggplant pizza, and a jug of sav. Everything came out fast and fresh and delicious. The portions are decent- especially the pizzas. However service was poor. We were never given water and out plates were cleared as soon as we took our last bite.
Chris Vera
Service is ok, not friendly but also not rude, just ok.<br/>Prices, average, maybe the spirits are a couple more dollars than the normal but that’s not a big deal.<br/>Place is pretty nice, clean and also nice background music.<br/>Pizzas are a bit poor looking for me (that’s why my 1.0 review) I love vegan food but wasn’t tasty at all. The dough was a bit raw, sauce was a bit cold, they looked a bit poor, like not enough ingredients, maybe was just not a good day, bad luck for me. <br/>A vegan friend recommended me this place, he loves gigi but I’m pretty sure you can find better vegan options in this area. <br/>I’ll be back at some point and maybe I’ll change my review, but for now can’t recommend this place.
Eisha.farrukh
Romantically lit yet frantically busy, Gigi’s hits all the right spots for anyone looking for a pizza fix. The pumpkin based pizzas are just divine.
Bottomlesspit
I only had Gigi as takeaway but I was so impressed. You would never know it is vegan! The pizzas are so full of flavour and really hold that traditional Italian pizza style. I had a couple of different types. The potate was divine. I can’t wait to go to the restaurant.

GIGIs pizzeria was on my list for a very long time. One, because its vegetarian and second, who doesn't like pizzas! It a nice place to go out with friends or even with your partners. We got there by 7 pm and it was packed to the rafters on a weekday. The waiting staff is friendly but wants you to run through your food quickly only because people are waiting. It has nice a cosy ambience. Loved the pizzas which were the specials of the day. (photo is added). The Marinara Tradizionale pizza was nice too. Patate pizza didn't quite live up to the expectations. It felt like potatoes from Sunday roast  thrown on a pizza with herbs like rosemary and capers. The orders on the neighbouring tables looked mouth watering. I would definitely go back to try out their other items. I want to be left with a satiated gut the next time I visit.

I headed off to Sydney last week for a few days, to catch up with some friends and to go to a concert at the Opera House. While I was there I ate at a few places ranging from a local sports club, to cafes, some junk food and a stylish pizza place. Some are not worth mentioning, but several are, among them Gigi the vegan pizza restaurant in Newtown.
Sharon Hunter
I went here on the recommendation of a family member, for the first time on Sunday evening. I feel loathe to give this place such a good review or I might not be able to get a table back there! What a place. The food is exceptional. I couldn't believe the cheese on the calzone was vegan. The Tiramisu was to die for. Light and fluffy with an incredible filling. The food was also very filling. The atmosphere is just lovely- warm and welcoming like being at a favourite family member's house for dinner. The night I was there, a diner had a medical emergency. The staff were fantastic as were the clientele with helping someone in distress. I am totally hooked on this place. You have to queue early to get in. A wonderful dining experience all round. Lovely people run this place and the atmosphere feels that way.
Jeni
Love this place!  Everything is vegan and super tasty. Great music too. My only issue is I wish they had gluten free pizza available for coeliacs and they don't take bookings :-(

GIGIs seems like it is always packed Friday & Saturday. We came on a Friday and had to wait for our entire party of 4 to arrive before we could be seated. But once we were seated and ordered, the food came out almost immediately! Service was quick and attentive, although not initially (the place was packed and full). The pizzas were all delicious, packed with flavour on a thin crust pizza. I don't normally eat the crust on pizzas but I did at GiGis! The pizzas are so full of favour, you wouldn't even know you were eating all vegan pizzas. Absolutely enjoyed GiGis and would be visiting again.

Always good food. Service can be good some nights, and other nights not so good. Phoned for a takeaway pizza, walked in to pick up, she took payment - said they wont be long, I waited ten minutes  then asked  if she could check, she found out the pizzas were behind her the whole time and were ready before I paid = I went home with cold pizzas.

Gigi Pizzeria has to be one of my favourite VEGAN pizza outlets in Sydney. I had the Calzone with dairy free ricotta, fried eggplant, basil topped with grated dairy free cheese. This dish was not a part of the main menu but the specials. We also ordered for Panelle, which had gave us a good savoury kick start to our meal. Just a 2 minute walk from Newtown station, this place can get super crowded on weekends. So be early and plan way before time!
Sam Yeung
Gigi did not let us down at all! Attentive staffs that were friendly, helpful and not too pushy to hurry us up in spite of the line of people waiting. A really nice atmosphere from inside. My friend and I ordered 2 pizzas to share - one with pumpkins puree, and one with tomato base and eggplant. My goodness, the pizzas brought me right back to Napoli. The pizza bases were crisp and true to Napoli style, the toppings were generous but not overloaded, and they really do bring vegan food onto another level (I'm certain even our meat eating friends would enjoy them). We were both very happy with our pizzas and did not leave one bit on our plates. We got there around 6pm, so we got a seat quite quickly, but do note that it was already pretty packed by then, and not long after, there was quite a big line waiting to dine there, so get there nice and early! We will definitely come back to try out their other pizzas!
Fat Boi
Okay so first of all I'm not vegan but I love eating vegetarian and vegan food because those vegans try harder than anyone else to make their food tasty and usually they succeed but rarely do they succeed as highly as Gigi's. To take a food as synonymous with meat and dairy as pizza, and veganize it without it sucking is a miracle. Gigi's is the total opposite of sucking, and I don't mean blowing, actually I don't know what I mean but the point is it's good. Very good. So good that I would even go so far as to put it in my top 10 pizzas in the world and that is saying something because I love pizza.
Samazz
If there's one thing you do, you get the spinach and ricotta calzone! 🤤😱 It's so good that I get afraid that it won't be on the specials board when I visit each time. The. Best!
Ann
Been here several times during the past two years. <br/>First visited when it wasnt transformed to vegan yet, had some meat pizzas and loved them.<br/>Went back with friends for cheese pizzas and really enjoyed them.<br/>Went back for another few times again when it became vegan, wasn't disappointed, the awesome flavor was still there!<br/>The pizza base is really nice, and it's the first proper pizza shop i tried in my life. Imagine how impressive I felt!<br/>The indoor dinning environment was amazing, with light and music, and the amazing service!<br/>But to fit more dinners, it was quite crowded.
Roberto Mos
The place is always extremely popular, people enjoy their time there and the owner I'm sure is very happy with the business, the food I'd say is good if you know what to expect! <br/>However in my case I was extremely disappointed, I went to an ITALIAN restaurant with a sign on the door saying "VERA PIZZA NAPOLETANA" and that's  completely a lie!! All the items on the menu' are either Vegetarian or VEGAN!!!  I went there in the hope for a good Italian pizza and I got vegan tasteless food! <br/>I have absolutely nothing against vegans or vegetarians, everyone should eat as they like, but saying  that they make the "vera pizza" and serving only vegan food is very deceitful!!
Anna
I rarely give 5's because it's hard to be perfect, but Gigi Pizzeria was nothing short of amazing. I had wanted to try them even before they went vegan, but was glad my first visit was after the switch. They serve some really amazing vegan pizzas, and is a spot I would gladly go back to over and over.<br/><br/>There is everything to love about the crust because it is an absolute killer, so naturally funghi e raddichio and patate were both amazing. However, if you only have the chance to try one pizza, make it patate because you won't regret it. It is one incredible pizza.<br/><br/>At this point I seriously wish I lived in Newtown just so I could get Gigi's pizza to go on the weekly (whilst also stuffing myself with all the other glorious vegan food Newtown has to offer). Lucky Newtownians.<br/><br/>Gigi Pizzeria is now a favourite and I intend to be back again and again. You don't need to be vegan or even vegetarian to love this place. Just give them a go and you won't regret it.
Alvi Chung
It was the first time I tried Gigi's again since its' transformation into a vegan joint. The notorious lines were still present and growing since, hence I was curious... As I was starving and did not wish to queue, I called them to pick it up. This was surprisingly a speedy process! The Funghi e Radicchio pizza had faux blue vein cheese which tasted too real. The swiss brown mushrooms, garlic and toasted walnuts were a perfect combination that left me feeling satisfied without the guilt! The pumpkin calzone we ordered contained the original hearty elements of the previous Non vegan Gigi's but in such an organic manner. The pumpkins were warm, plump and juicy complimented by the sweet bursts of the cherry tomatoes. <br/>The vibe looks quite nice inside too, so I recommend you be patient unlike me and have a dine inside ;)
Marco Minchia
Once upon a time Gigi's was the best pizzeria in town, there were queues of people lining up and nowhere a frown. Until one day Gigi's owner decided that their food and ideals strangely collided. The pizza once famous and known in all the land, now unfortunately tastes really bland. The moral of the story? 1 star for your lost pizza glory.
Cynthia Chang
Recently went to Gigi's for dinner, food was alright however they will trick you into paying $6.50 for still water. Never got offered tap water, was only given the option of still or sparkling and when asked about it the staff were rude, cocky and condescending. I'm sorry your business is doing so poorly that you have to trick your customers into paying $13 for 2 bottles of water by making it seem like there wasn't tap water available.
Sydney Girl
Really good pizzas and the best tiramisu I've had! Can't believe it was vegan! The only thing I was unhappy about was that whilst paying the bill, the waitress asked how much tip I'd like to leave, which made me feel obliged to give a tip when I felt that one was unnecessary, so I had to leave one and then she didn't tell me that there was a surcharge added so only after I had paid the bill with the extra tip added on there was the surcharge also added. She should've told me about this and shouldn't have made me feel uncomfortable not leaving a tip.

Gigi Pizzeria serves one of the better pizzas in Sydney. I ordered the pine mushroom with ricotta cheese pizza and mushroom polenta balls this evening. The pizza crust was just nice, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and it was not too thick. The heavenly combination of ricotta cheese and pine mushroom was a surprise. It was a pity the pizza was a little chill and the mushroom polenta was just average.<br/><br/>Service was excellent too.
Eatdrinkbe_merry
Quite frankly, this popular Newtown pizzeria is able to satisfy carnivores and vegans alike! Give your customers tasty food regardless and quickly the distinctions between food consumers begin to blur. We may even forget about what we are NOT consuming! Started with delicious almond coated potato croquettes and chickpea crisps. Mmmmm. Then for the pizzas A Marinara, a Roasted Potato with black truffle pate, and a Peperone Rosso with tomato, red capsicum, capers and olive tapenade were all super delicious. The secret of Gigi's success is the wonderful hand stretched dough and wood fired pizza Napoli style. A definite crowd pleaser on the King Street strip!

"Weclome to Gigi's Pizzeria: They're big and dairy free"<br/><br/>I've been on the vego express for the last few weeks now with my best mate being in town. I've heard nothing but praises from this little corner spot in Newtown - so come one random Monday we decided to check this shindig out<br/><br/>They open for dinner service at 6 on the dot and jesus christ let me tell you there was a small line already snailing around a small side street next door at 5:30. <br/><br/>The menu is brilliant - its a mix of modern Australian and traditional itallian flavours and combinations all on super sexy rustic bases that are cooked perfectly with the right amount of crunch and chew. <br/><br/>The shit here is so good I dare say it - you could even take your nonna here and she'd give it a thumbs up in approval. <br/><br/>
Caitlin Monnery
Seriously, believe the hype on this one. Luckily we got there just after they opened as there was a line down the street by the time we left. <br/>The service was wonderful from the minute we walked in, we actually almost walked past because we thought they were full but someone came out to get us and was really welcoming. I had the blue cheese pizza which was amazing, I have no idea how they get it to taste like that but I'm so glad they did. My girlfriend also really loved her pizza (the one with asparagus) and given her love of cheesy pizza that must be a good sign! <br/>Only small criticism is that there was a large amount of red cabbage on top of mine which I'm not a huge fan of but that comes down to personal taste and was really easy to take off, and we weren't given water with our meal. Can't wait to come back next time we're in Sydney.

This place is absolutely amazing! One of the best pizzas I've had in Australia, and it's completely vegan which is incredible. Will definitely be back!

I must admit I was sceptical - vegan pizza? Good vegan pizza? How can such a thing possibly exist? But it does, and I was pleasantly surprised I have to say. The bases were thin, dry and crusty with a great puff on the edges. Plenty of char from the wood fired oven. We tried a couple, including Ripieno zucca e spinaci  ($24) - think pumpkin, swiss brown mushrooms, spinach and roasted cherry tomatoes. Was delicious. Peperone Rosso ($22) was also great with a salty hit of capers and olive tapenade. The Cavolo ($22) with cauliflower puree, artichokes, pinenuts sounded very promising, but was the only mis-step of the night. Something about the artichokes - I believe the vinegar - was overpowering, even sour. I don't know if they're done in-house, but I doubt it. Otherwise everything was great. And if you're wondering how pizza can possibly taste good without cheese? Simple - a great base covered in quality olive oil. Everything else is a bonus : )

The pizzas were so delicious despite them being vegan. They were very different from your traditional pizzas but nonetheless, very flavourful. My two girlfriends and i ordered three pizzas in total (Asparagi, Patate, and the week's special pizza, the Ripieno zucca e spinaci) and we were stuffed by the end of our meal. Each pizza was unique and more-ish. My favourite was definitely the pumpkin (ie Ripieno zucca e spinaci) and it was the most flavourful. The staff was super friendly and the cocktails were great. The only let down was the fact that the crust wasn't crispy. The dough was rather chewy and eating with forks and knives was not ideal despite the crust was very thin. <br/>Overall, definitely would come back. <br/>P.s even my meat-lover friend was impressed.

Heard the hype and went to see for myself. Not only was the pizza completely worthy of the Verace seal of approval, but the service and atmosphere was just as good. Looking forward to going again!

Great pizza, great ambience, and lovely, helpful staff. We tried the potato pizza with truffle pate, followed by an incredible tiramisu, and I think I will be fantasising about both for days. Truly the place to bring any meat-eating friends who are skeptical of vegan food - Gigi's really knocks it out of the park. Keen to go back and try some of the other options on the menu!

I enjoyed my first vegan pizza experience at Gigi's. We started with a bowl of flat chickpea fingers called panelle. These tasted like Indian muruku but were soft rather than crisp or crunchy. An addictive starter but best eaten while hot. The arancini were next. We enjoyed these crisp babies, filled with mushroom risotto with a subtle cheesiness (all vegan of course). For mains, we shared the raddicchio, walnut & vegan blue cheese pizza and the fried asparagus & basil pizza. Both pizzas had thin crusts with soft centers as they should. The asparagus was the winner at our table. The mild vegan blue cheese lacked the edge of real blue cheese but it was still a decent choice. One thing that did turn me off slightly though was the amount of oil that glistened on each slice and on the plate - more oil than a pizza with normal cheese.<br/>Service was efficient and brisk; it didn't take long for our food to arrive. The move to a vegan menu hasn't dampened its popularity - lines are still long so be prepared to wait during peak meal times. Via Napoli is still my personal pick for pizza in Sydney (that crust!!) but Gigi's is a solid choice when dietary restrictions are a factor.

Everytime I go past here, there's always a line. We came for a bday and took some time getting seated. They didn't seem to have a consistent method of seating ppl. We were told to put our name down and go down to the pub to wait for a call... <br/><br/>Once we got seated, we felt very rushed to order though. We understood they were busy but we weren't taking that long. Finally we ordered pizzas to share, along with some sides. They took some time to come out and we were missing some sides, which we had to order again. <br/><br/>The taste was good, the only disappointing thing would be the sogginess of the pizza in the middle. That made it a little unpleasant to eat.

Went here with a vegan friend and a vegetarian friend. Both of them loved the place. One expressed that the reason she loved it was that they didn't make a big deal, and made food so good that non-vegans wouldn't even notice it was vegan.<br/><br/>As a non-vegan, I found the food exceptionally mediocre. I can't fault the place or the staff, they were great. I'm fine with vegetarian pizza, but find pizza without cheese bland.<br/><br/>If you're vegan, you'll probably love it. If your tastes are broader, there's a heap of better places around.

I consider myself to be somewhat of a carnivore, so I didn't know what to expect from a vegan pizza place. But boy did Gigi's surprise me! The table service was above average and atmosphere chill. But the food absolutely blew me away, and I'll definitely return for seconds.

Whoah, this is some seriously good pizza! As a huge pizza fan and a vegetarian, I was delighted to go to a pizza restaurant where I had so many delicious options to chose from. The pizzas came out very quickly and were incredible tasty - pillowy pizza crust and flavourful fresh toppings. I would say their pizza is on par with Lucio pizzeria in Darlinghurst (although more adventurous, which I liked), which is a huge compliment. My advice would be to definitely get there before opening time though - I arrived a few minutes before 6pm on a Friday when they opened and joined the quickly-forming queue to get straight in (and felt rather smug when I saw the size of the queue by the time I left!). Can't wait to go back!

Pizza bases were the best thing about this restaurant. Service was lacking, staff were rude and the food was unspectacular. Salad on pizza that you are certainly charged for. Desserts were reasonable. After rave reviews, it was disappointing. I certainly won't be back.
TrufflePig
Hated the wait but loved the food. The place reeks of arrogance from waitstaff. When asking for an indication of timeframe given our place in line we were told to continue waiting. There is a sad table right at the back of the restaurant, with full view of the amenities and stacked chairs. It simply shouldn't be there and we were unfortunate to be 'granted' this table. We did ask to move and fortunately staff were obliging. <br/><br/>Steamed beetroot 'carpaccio' was delicious although a little on the oily side. Outside of this they nailed the flavour combination with rocket, walnuts, pomegranate, preserved lemon and vegan cheese. Lemon could have been finer in turn a little more palatable. <br/><br/>Mushroom and radicchio pizza cannot be ignored. I feel there is no other logical reason to order anything but this pizza. Admittedly the fresh radicchio made it a little fiddly to handle, but again, the flavour combination across mushroom, blue cheese and walnut won me over. <br/><br/>Im also not one for calzone however the spinach and vegan 'ricotta' calzone was chewy, soft and beautifully gooey inside to the point of potential convert.

Advertised as an authentic Italian experience, Gigi's is a washed up pizzeria with some hints from its former glory. After a brisk 30 minute queue and a quick peek at other people's dishes we were hungry. Onto the ordering, a simple one page menu for the Pizza's, it contained very little in the way of traditionality, some typical Italian headers to call some completely un-Italian style pizzas, I mean walnuts, (NON DAIRY) blue cheese, radicchio and mushroom. This is not a Napoli style pizza. Also, please outline that the place is vegan only, we were hungry and we wanted good pizzas, what we got were incomplete pizzas.

This place is special.  There are plenty of places out there who do excellent pizza, but I feel that Gigi must be in the top two (and I say that only because I've not tried every single pizza joint in Sydney yet).  Bases are perfectly cooked, light yet chewy (exactly as they should be) and the toppings are always fresh.  It's just a bonus that this place is vegan in my mind, I can gorge on pizza and not worry too much about the saturated fats and cholesterol I'd have ingested if it were a cheesy/meaty sort of a place.  The taste still outstrips any non-vegan pizza I've had, you won't be left feeling underwhelmed for lack of meat/dairy.<br/><br/>I think some of the entrees and desserts are hidden diamonds on the menu- specifically- the Arancini is the best I've ever had, hands down.<br/><br/>The only issue here is that you'll often be left lining up for a table, but it never feels like too long a wait, the line moves quickly, and I also respect that you're always still treated politely and never rushed in or out despite the lines.

Best Italian restaurant in town. Their pizzas are done in wood fire oven with the traditional thicker crust from Napoli. The crocchette brought me back to my childhood. We missed on trying the tiramisù as they ran out of it, however the mille foglie and the torta all'arancia were out of this world. Also, the fact that all is fully vegan just takes it to a whole other level. Best dining experience in Sydney. Will definitely be back. Congratulazioni al propietario!

Amazing vegan food experience. <br/><br/>I'm strictly vegeterian, and in the past few months I've been flirting heavily with veganism. My husband is a staunch carnivore, and is suspicious to the vegan way of life. Last night I coerced him into giving 'Gigi' a go. We were not disappointed. The service was great: attentive, friendly, hospitable. The food was great; the pumpkin calzone was a bit hit. The cocktails were delicious, and served quickly. <br/><br/>We ended spent 120 bucks on two entrees, two pizzas and four cocktails. Definitely not something you'd spend on dinner every night, but we'll definitely become regulars at this incredible pizzeria - WELL DONE.

Amazing vegan pizzas, especially the pumpkin calzone - wow! <br/>Service is attentive, friendly and unobtrusive. Nice decor and ambiance.<br/> Thank you Gigi!

Amazing vegan pizza with a great atmosphere, this place is always busy and for very good reasons. My only complaint was the rocket and apple salad we ordered. It was very bland and underwhelming, which you would not expect from a vegan restaurant.

This place is amazing. If you have something against vegan food, you need to ignore your gut feeling and just go with it. This is some of the best pizza I've ever had. The only slight criticisms I have is the seemingly secret credit card surcharge (~2%), and that there is always loud dance music blaring through the restaurant. So much so it's near impossible to talk with your friends at dinner. But the amazing pizza and dessert is worth putting up with the noise.

This place is something special. If I ever decide to indulge on something, especially pizza, I want it to be more than worth it - this went way above my expectations and it was that much more special because it's vegan. You don't need to be vegan to appreciate the flavors and authentic original Italian pizza bases. The best Italian dessert that happens to be vegan too, the tiramisu is the real deal. The managers made extra effort to ensure we had a top experience, very welcoming gentlemen. There is a great vibey atmosphere and a long line to get in so come early. Worth the mission to Newtown, a must in Sydney.

I don't eat pizza and I never leave Bondi when in Sydney, so it took some convincing to have me try this - WOW! This place is unbelievable and by far the best pizza in Sydney. Lines of people waiting just to try this amazing food. Pizza on par with what I've had in Naples. Even better, it's all vegan and the biggest meat eaters love it! Ambience and service is first-class! Run by some local Bondi locals - an absolute must!

Such an overwhelmingly satisfying vegan feed- ordered the Pomodoro salad (but rather simple) which was very refreshing and paired nicely with the Ripieno zucca e spinachi which turned out to be a giant pocket filled with pumpkin cream and other veggies inside (we ordered it thinking it was a pizza) Sooooo good. ((Highly recommend)) Ended the night with the Torta all'arancia which had the most amazing consistency for a sponge. Definitely will head back!!!!!!

Not debating the vegan direction this used-to-make-a-great-pizza place has taken but please, write it on the outside so people don't waste time sitting down to find out they can't have a proper pizza.

Loved this place when I came here as a non vegan. Over the last year I've turned vegan and so has vegan and it is just as good in taste of not better. Soo good and happy that a business has done this and it is a huge credit to the owner for the change. The amount of people he will teach, inspire and impact through this is brilliant. Well done gigis.

Yum, this place is amazing. Good on you Gigi for making such a decision to wipe cruelty off your menu. Will definitely recommend and be back! ❤️❤️❤️ Delicious, vegan food.

Awesome food, amazing service, good vibes. I loved this place - it was the best pizza I have ever had. It is hard to find decent vegan pizza, but this was incredible. I will definitely be returning.

Came on a Tuesday night and was seated promotely. Service was good apart from waiting to get my bill despite standing at the counter. It was a good 1 minute or 2 before I could get the bill. Ive been to the Leicchardt pizza place that also does the traditional Neapolitan method of pizza so I wanted to compare. Had the Funghi e Radicchio which has a unique taste and was better than the Peperone Rosso which I didn't like. Sometimes its what you choose but I felt Leicchardht pizzas were better. Also had the Crocchette di patate which was nice but I was expecting more. Prices wise I find it expensive for what you get and like other reviewers its a bit dark inside. This place isn't for me, its popular enough but I didn't find the taste sensation I was expecting

Gigi's is ruined !!!!!!<br/><br/>It was my favourite pizzeria in all of sydney, which is a huge thing because pizza is my up-most favourite food and I would be a regular until they decided to turn hipster and copy the 'newtown' trend.<br/><br/>Ruined such a great restaurant.<br/>Still confused why something going strong and amazing would turn vegan....
FigureGirl Jax Tregidga
Normally I love Gigi's but definitely won't be back... <br/><br/>Who changes their menu to ALL VEGAN?! <br/><br/>There are enough vegan restaurants in newtown... <br/>And PIZZA vegan options as well! <br/><br/>We're so disappointed, and the service is normally ok for me (they're a little blunt sometimes, but never as awful as some people have stated on here.) <br/><br/>But to change their full menu to Vegan just really disappointed me. <br/><br/>P.S. Great customer experience at Via Napoli and no Sh*tty service. <br/>Friendly, happy and energetic staff. <br/>
Anna
Really delicious pizzas which you'll love whether your vegan or not. I only wish they did a whole spelt base option! (And that they were closer to me in Paddington...)

Best Pizza I have eaten, regardless of it being Vegan. Crispy edges, soft chewy dough, subtle flavours, and well priced quick service. This place can't be missed.
Charlotte
Excellent pizza. <br/>I was skeptical about a pizza without cheese, but the menu has been so carefully designed that you don't actually miss the cheese at all. To our amazement, we didn't even miss the butter on the garlic and rosemary bread - it's so full of flavour that you don't even think about the lack of butter. I came here before it was vegan and it was really good, but since the change I actually think it's 100% better. We loved it and will definitely be back.

Wow. Amazing and creative vegan pizzas. So good you don't miss the cheese!<br/>I would be intrigued to know what they put in some of those sauces. Truly inventive.

Used to be my favourite pizza place, until they recently went Vegan and sadly i won't be back again. <br/><br/>I tried it with an open mind, hoping that it would still taste great, but it was just dull. Admittedly I never eat out at vegan places, maybe thats what vegan food tastes like. It is also now really expensive for some cooked bread & vegetables. <br/><br/>I guess its a win if you are vegan, but unless they bring back the cheese and salami I sadly won't be returning.

Went here almost weekly for years. The pizza is great but the service was always rude. We stopped going when one time the chefs knocked off a pizza stand onto our table, spilling red wine all over my wife, and the chefs blamed us! We moved that stand because no wait staff moved it even though there was no more room on the table to eat our meals. Spent the rest of the meal eating our food that was swimming in red wine. No replacement food, no clean up, and had to pay full price on the bill.<br/><br/>Good food isn't worth being treated like dirt.

What happened Gigi. Our favourite pizza place. How to stuff a pizza. No cheese and no meat. Such a shame. Have to find a new great pizza joint now !
Tom
Never made it past 2 meters into the restaurant when I was yelled at by the staff(waiter with a mostauch )for asking if I could sit with my wife at the table that had just been vacated. He literally yelled NO!!!!! at me as if I was a school kid and just kept clearing<br/> the table nonchalantly plain and rude, giving us the stare and cold shoulder. The restaurant wasn't even full nor busy, hence the surprise at the unwarranted shout and rudeness, perhaps my wife and I didn't fit the part to be in this establishment<br/>Being a customer service supervisor for over 30 years I was absolutely at how somebody could employ somebody with this service apathy.<br/>I will never step again into this place and since I was recommended to go there and will now advise my clients and friends strongly to avoid this place based on my expirience.<br/><br/><br/>

Delicious food, awful service. As many people have noted in their reviews the food is to die for but the service is also one of the worst I have had. I've been there many times and the waiters always act like you are inconveniencing them simply by being there, but obviously it hasn't stopped me from going back. It's just a shame because they could be excellent all round if they pulled back on the attitude.
