Review Kelly's On King - Newtown

Da P (D P)
Came here for a few drinks. The happy hour has good discounts on jugs etc. However, the attitude of the staff at the upstairs bar was a bit lame. My friend was asking a question and the bartender couldn't understand his accent. In saying that, I understand that sometimes it is difficult to understand non-native speakers but come on.. Please don't make an annoyed face repeatedly saying 'Huh?what??'. Sydney is extremely multicultural and a little effort goes a long way. Another thing was that we put money in one of the gaming machines and after we couldn't get it to work, I asked at the bar. The guy shrugged his shoulders and said 'Ah..yeah... I think it's broken'. How about putting a sign up? I asked if they are able to get the $3 out for us, as we could use it instead to play pool. He said yes but after 10 min of waiting, they still didn't come and avoided eye contact and no, there weren't many customers at the bar. Yes, it might be annoying to get money out of the machine but then simply indicate it's broken. Overall lazy staff attitude and probably wouldn't bother returning.

My first time at Kelly’s on King. I saw Wicked Envy play on stage, a great place for bands to play

Mikaela has got to be the utmost bartender I’ve met in my life. In a socially deprived time like we live in, she offered solace, wisdom and tenderness with her demeanour and kindness. Kelly’s will be my first port of call forever moving forward when navigating the Newtown nightlife ❤️

Whilst playing their wonderful trivia I noticed a couple poc who were friendly and posed no indication further than the intoxication of the rest of the patrons who seemed to be having a date night.. according to a bar man’s complaint they were suddenly asked to leave. I couldn’t help but notice they were the first ppl I’ve ever noticed kicked out so early from Kelly’s. The security then threatened me when I came to see what was happening and I was promptly kicked out for saying “evil happens when good people do nothing”. As leaving the security mockingly waved and smiled at me whilst further taunts. I’m pretty heartbroken and disappointed in a regular local pub I attend and loved.

Do NOT recommend any longer, been coming here for awhile and tonight (Sat 18th March), your security is appalling - refused entry and accused a female friend of consuming alcohol while outside the bar. It was a soft drink, we were civil, sober, not rowdy nor causing any nuisance, and he flat out refused entry no matter what. We walked past later and he threatened to call the police because she said hello. Ruined a good night out, absolutely disgusting treatment of paying patrons

The layout of this pub can be described as the inner workings of a giant's intestines if they were stuffed into a terraced house. The downstairs area has a mix of Olive green walls and stained wood furniture. As if the intestines were digesting pea soup and trees. Upstairs has a bar area, a staged area for live shows and an outside area for smokers and Nicole Kidman lookalikes. If you look pass the updated scenery you can almost hear the walls speak of their aging past. Like an vintage motorcar, it wishes to engulf the patron with it's rich history and dementia soaked class. The food is highly edible. Laden with a fabulous smell associated with good fresh ingredients prepared in a cozy yet clean and organized kitchen. Martha Stewart would be proud as punch. I've had my heart broken in this place recently. A crush which lasted three years destroyed in last than three seconds. Not sure how this might effect the star rating. The staff didn't know how to react to a grown man crying into his beer. As a result my IPA had a salty aftertaste.

So they've changed heaps since lockdown. They've put money into the bar systems and the overall atmosphere. They have two brand new pinball machines, a Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, both are pretty sweet. They also have two pool tables upstairs and Mondays are free pool/league. The bar also has two nitro stands now for Guiness and Kilkenny and the bartenders know how to pour both. Overall, a new favourite spot for me to hang out with the boys

Good pub with nice staff but the bouncers are always starting fights, maybe they should pay attention to who they hire

One of the best chicken parmigiana' I've ever had! Place has a great atmosphere, good music and a big space so good for big groups who are interested in a pub crawl.

Two floor pub which has become something of a Newtown institution. Irish pubs can be largely interchangeable but this is well decorated throughout with the signature dark wood and Celtic memorabilia you would expect to see. A pint of Kilkenny was a very reasonable $7.50 so it ticks all the boxes price-wise as well.

With Kelly's being one of Loz's favourite watering holes as a youngin, we visited to see if the place had changed.

First time ordering food, and we ordered eggplant parmigiana, the Portuguese burger and cheese and bacon fries. No complaints with the food, typical pub grub. Plenty of spice in the burger which was a plus.

Their drinks aren't too expensive and staff are friendly and efficient. There weren't many people inside, but this was early in the night. Walking by a little later on, there was a line outside. Overall, there's nothing fancy about this place whatsoever just cheap food and drinks and lots of seating for chatting the night away.
Simply Starving
Average pub in the middle of King Street. Staff are fantastic and charismatic, and the drinks are cheap. No frills and good service is what this pub is all about.

Fun and unpretentious venue to enjoy a few drinks! Had some great nights drinking pints and chilling out. The bar staff are friendly and a good laugh!

Biggest dump in Newtown. Even the limes they put in the coronas are brown and off. Avoid

Best Bar Ever!. Friendly people, lively karaoke entertainment, bumpin' dance scene, ice-cold drinks a-plenty, lovely staff and stays open till decently late. *Applauds*

Poor experience, wouldn't bother trying again. Having passed Kellys on King many times & noted plenty of patrons, I thought I'd give it a go.
Ordered a vegetarian breakfast from the all day menu & sat back with a beer.
Whilst checking my packages, I realized I'd need to retrieve a crucial prescription left behind at my doctors, so asked the kitchen staff to keep the food warm for me. Staff member said it was nearly ready, & I said I'd be as quick as possible.
I was quite surprised and rather pissed off to find on my return 40 minutes later that they'd thrown the food away.
Now, I don't claim to be a brilliant cook, but I do know keeping food warm & edible (or even putting it in a takeaway container) isn't hard.. if you can be bothered, which they obviously couldn't.
So, don't know if the food is any good, but the customer service is abysmal.

Decent food, and good beer, ticks my boxes.. Good beer, good food for a good price, a nice roof-top area, a couple of pool tables that don't get in the way, and all in a good location. It's just a nice handy spot to grab a drink, a quick bite, and enjoy the company of friends.

I also recommend the place when Ireland are playing rugby, it has a certain ambience then that you can't put a price on.
