Review Rst Seafood Restaurant - North Fitzroy

Dely Rose Molina Alferez
I was just craving for seafood chowder and that’s what led me and my friend to this restaurant. It was closer to the freeway and there’s a parking available for customers. Seafood chowder - moment of Silence. I want to savour the flavour so much I had to shut my friend so I can enjoy it… which I did. Scallops, oysters and the seafood pasta were all served beautifully. The chef has spread his love to the meals they served. We will come back again with our husbands. We took the liberty to make them jealous with the food. Service was good and the staff were very attentive. Well done you guys!!!

I’m so happy my friend decided to have his birthday celebration here! Food was stunning on some of the dishes were extraordinarily good. As you can see from the pictures, we ordered a lot as we were a big party! The chili prawns, soft shell crab and gnocchi is out of this world beautiful! Strongly recommend that! Generally speaking, everything is good. But please order the three mentioned above!

Hands down the best seafood restaurant in Melbourne! Been going there regularly ever since I was introduced to it by a friend, the hidden gem in our neighbourhood! The service is also super friendly and laid back, nothing pretentious, just the most fresh and delicious seafood!

In love. Behind the most uninspiring entrance door, is the most spectacular restaurant bar. Decor was a fusion of tavern and fine dining, a little unsure at first. An inexperienced waiter, made up for it with his enthusiasm, and older waitresses (maybe the owner/managers) were very knowledgeable and efficient. I love it. All doubts were expelled at the first slurp of the seafood chowder! With pieces of scallops, prawns and calamari, this was the best seafood chowder I've ever had. This literally left a smile on our faces at the first taste! Next came the perfectly cooked mussels in an acidic tomato broth, with shallots and capsicum. A large bowl for only $16. Well worth it! Our main meal to share was the gnocchi with lobster tails in a champagne sauce. For $40 a plate, RST was not shy with their lobster portions. The meal was basically 50% gnocchi and 50% lobster pieces. Paired with beautiful wines, this was one of the best restaurant experiences we've had in a long time xx

This is the best seafood restaurant in Melbourne have been to RST many times, with family & friends and each time it's been a great experience. The food is excellent, the service is great and Danny the owner is a great host. Highly recommended. Dino Scaramuzzo

Another great place to eat, fine dining with great service. Freshest seafood with a wide range of modern dishes. Don't let the exterior fool you because inside is full of gourmet delights. My new fav seafood joint in Melbourne

Loved this place so much we went twice in 2 weeks! Seafood is fresh, and the service is fantastic. A little on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. Definitely recommend this place to all if you’re looking for somewhere that has great seafood!
Diamond Kavadas
The seafood was awful. Not at all fresh, overcooked and disgustingly overpriced. The atmosphere was pub-like, which would have been fine if it was pub prices. The serving staff were actually lovely and the best part of the experience. Will not be returning.

Great place to impress, or just to have a nice meal.. Friendly and helpful staff, and the food is excellent and presentation is great..

Been going here for nearly 20 years. Tonight was no exception for the best seafood and service ever. Such great value. Thanks to Danny and your wonderful staff. 10/10

Another excellent night at RST, stunning seafood and wonderful staff, service is beyond compare. 5 star quality across the board and Sandy, our waitress provides outstanding service and adds to the “ambience” of the venue. We will be back again and again.

The seafood was fresh and tasted great. The service was excellent and very reasonable in price compared to other fine dining restaurants Would definitely recommend to lovers of seafood and I will go back here in a heartbeat.

Lunch was fantastic. My friend and I had two entrees each which left plenty of room for dessert ...all of which were delicious, as were the coffee and truffles afterwards. Together with our glasses of wine, we thought the cost was very reasonable. Would recommend RST to everyone. We'll be back again when my husband is free.

Used a deals.com voucher - absolutely amazing value. Standouts for me were the King Prawn Spring Rolls (3 per serve; succulent with crispy outer + spicy dipping sauce) and the Chocolate + Raspberry Fondant; rich but lovely. Will definitely return and happily pay 'full fare'. Service also friendly and attentive. FYI, BYO wine possible if not using a voucher.

The Richmond Seafood Tavern is conspicuous by its Fitzroy North Location (presumably it relocated from Richmond at some point). One thing that you need to be aware of is that this 'tavern' serves no ordinary pub grub - it's pretty swish dining with prices that reflect that. This is a nice seafood restaurant, not a tavern.

The fish here is exceptional. The King George Whiting is beautifully cooked even if the presentation is austere (you'll see from photos some pretty bare looking crumbed fillets). But the taste is fantastic, and my go to for seafood in the inner north.

Also good are the entrees. I can't go past the oysters - natural, Kilpatrick and Morney - all deliciously prepared. My only criticism is the lack of complementary sides (eg chips, veggies or salad), and on occasion the service is a little carefree, particularly given the price point of the food. But these are small things in what is a worthy seafood restaurant.

Got a scoop on to try this place, but as always there are exclusions (ie lobster and scampi). They were busy (seems like lots of people has the scoop ons). Can’t fault the service, that was attentive and prompt. However I felt like I was stuck in a time warp from the 80’s or 90’s with the dishes on offer and the presentation (admittedly the soft shell crab is a newer invention); for example the scallops wrapped in prosciutto! That’s not to say it wasn’t well done, the grilled fish was really beautifully cooked. I only gave 3 starts as having looked at the full prices, I certainly wouldn’t be coming. However, with the voucher I would certainly come or come back.

Bought a scoopon and were a bit worried by the dark side street entrance but we and had a really great experience Chowder was fab one of the best , prawn linguine was faultless and desert salt caramel tart and ice cream was also great We will def be back Staff friendly and service quick we loved it
Eat Good Melbourne
We came here craving oysters and ordered ourselves a large plate of freshly shucked oysters. Some of our oysters were warm but staff were quick to replace them. For mains we had seafood linguine, Moreton bay bugs on risotto and the gnocchi. The linguine was bountiful with seafood. The gnocchi was nice and creamy and the bay bugs were delicious although the risotto could’ve had a little more seasoning.

A hidden gem in North Fitzroy... Bug tails done in Honey and Sesame; Procuttio wrapped scollops and a Lobster Gnocci that a Nonna would be proud of!!!

Easily the best Seafood in Melbourne - we will be back!
Greg Awayalot
Absolutely love this cute little restaurant in Fitzroy. Great attentive service, nice homey feel but best of all their food is fabulous. I had the pearl perch and my wife had the King George Whiting. Both were excellent but mine was probably the best fish dish I’ve ever had, and I eat fish a lot. The style was the fancy one but can’t remember exactly what it was. You’ll know it when you see it. Absolute recommendation. Tummy rumbling just thinking about it!

An absolute must go to for seafood. It doesn't look promising from the outside, but inside everything changes. It's a lovely setting, there is very attentive and good service; the staff made us feel appreciated. The food topped this of. We had a three course meal each and everything was prepared to perfection - well balanced and just a delight to eat honestly. Making seafood special without overpowering the seafood.

Oh and try the chocolate fondant as a desert!
Amy
Great food, atmosphere and staff! We have gone several times with friends and while I agree parking can be tough the fish is always fresh and tasty. My favourite dish by far was the calamari, they give it a really light dusting and it is delicious. Also there is a great little bar for pre drinks and the wine list is very reasonably priced.
Steve Milton
It's not cheap!!! Basic fish main meals are $35, and then you have to add sides to that because the fish we had only came with a bit of limp rocket. Sides are $10, so by the time you add on a couple of these you are looking at $50/meal and that's without wine, entre and dessert. The meals are ok but nothing to rave about. We had sooo much rocket in the salads I reckon they must have been trying to get rid of it. The sides overall, lacked imagination. My chowder entre was very tasty and the orange flour less cake with icecream was also delicious. Service was very good with friendly staff.
Finger Lickin
Nice spot for some good quality seafood. This place has been there for a long time and they know how to do seafood well. It's good without being amazing. The seafood is really fresh, the entrees were a bit of hit and miss but if you stick to the classics it's not a bad meal.
Jeremy K
Absolutely sensational seafood for a fancy night out. It's not cheap but totally worth it. Fantastic service and wine list. I highly recommend the Moreton Bay bugs and the pan fried fish. Fine dining the way I like it: simple recipes with quality ingredients, cooked perfectly.

Old school seafood dining and service experience ....... with a bloody good Seafood Linguine and Chocolate Fondant dessert.

Stand alone "pub" style building, not in your typical "foodie" centrum area, worth the find and enjoyable dining experience. JT-29/08/2017.

Went here on voucher 3 course plus wine for $59. It was good value for the voucher, but if you were paying regular i would say it was overpriced for bland seafood. Started with prawn springrolls, 4 arrived with a prawn in each with sweet chilu sauce that was obviously out of the bottle. Tasted good, partner has scallops with proscutto crumbs 3 scallops arrived, a bit rubbery and no char very unexciting.

Mains chose flathead tails in beer battle, 5 very small tails arrived with 2 slivers of lettuce, batter light and crispy nothing fancy and you could get the same from a quality fish and chip shop for half the price, other dish was panko crumed fish. It was crisp but the fish was quite tough, we ordered as extra coleslaw $10 nice and crisp but dressibg very flat and tasted like bottle mayonaise with something else added, we did not eat the tartare sauce ad it was too heavy and both of us did not like it, we squeezed the life out of the 2 lemon segments that were on the table

Dessert was passionfruit panacotta with lemon gelato, it was delicious and the tangy lemon cut through the richness, other was sticky date pudding which was extremely dry and had to be mashed into the icecream to soften it up.

Service before and during the meal was attentive and food arrived in good time.

We would not return as we found it bland and over priced, the choice of extras to go with meal were limited and boring, for $32 you think they could throw in some quality chips intead of charging $8 for packet french fries. Good value as voucher but not if you are paying menu prices

The prawns and scallops were my clear favorites! Overall, very pleased with everything including the service. A seafood spot worth the visit

This restaurant has a nice warm comfortable ambience, with friendly staff that make you welcome and attend well to your needs. The range of fish and seafood is excellent and everything we tasted was absolutely delicious. We had the mussels with lemon grass, calamari fritti, the cod with soy, ginger, spring onions etc and a mixed salad. The wine list is comprised of not the usual suspects. The house chardonnay was really splendid with the fish and seafood. Meat lovers have the option of a schnitzel here, but fish and seafood is the emphasis. The cheese was beautifully aged and the desserts rather large, best to share unless you have a really sweet tooth. A fine place to dine for lunch or dinner on nicely sourced ingredients. The origins of all fishes is described, so that you know the provenance of your meal. Located on the corner of Rae Street, North Fitzroy with a good car park. The No 11 tram stops just a short stroll away. Loved it.
Craig Lillyadds
Not happy, bad location, very average seafood and very expensive for what you get. The prices reflect a high quality establishment however the location, setup and feel of the place is like a bistro!
Pat RR
There are many reviews that the place is good value. I strongly disagree. The seafood is of average quality at best. And you definitely do not get what you pay for as a meal for two cost around $200 dollars and that was for a simple starter and main meal. I walked away feeling dissatisfied with the overall experience.

The place looks like a pub as you walk in the door and there were families with children playing noisy video games with the menu being on the wall far away and unreadable from half of the restraints seating.

Overall the prices reflect a fine dining restraint, however the reality is that the venue looks like a pub bistro and is very over priced.
Carmi
Great little place with really good seafood. The service and staff are lovely. Down to earth, super nice and friendly staff. I bought a Living Social deal and thought I had it wrong it was such good value. The restaurant is in an old pub but it's definitely nice enough, clean and they create a great feel. I keep wondering why this place isn't always booked out, I'll keep going back.
I had one of the worst dining experiences ever at RST. My husband took me here for Valentine's Day this year. Our meal took over 3.5 hours for basic fish and salad. We couldn't even get a drink refill. No one apologised to us when we politely said we needed to get home as it was 11pm and I was pregnant. The tables weren't even all full and the meal cost us quite a bit. So disappointed.

Clam chowder and lobster rolls
Yuuuuuuummmmmm
And the service was great too
Food came out promptly and everything was reasonable priced
Will definitely be back :)
Couldn't fault the food at this place.
There are many reviews that the place is overpriced. I strongly disagree. It is seafood and of great quality, the golden rule of, you get what you paid for applies here.

We chose to try a few starters and mains and share everything. I recommend this way of eating...we were stuffed!
We started with oysters mornay, came out promptly and hot, hot, hot. We enjoyed the whitebait fritter, the chilli king prawns, the soft shell crab, the delicious scallops and of course the stand out starter was the lobster roll, just divine. So full of flavour, heaps of lobster and I just wish I could eat them over n over again.
For mains we couldn't go past the Moreton bay bugs with chilli sauce and they did not disappoint. The flavours were great, cooked perfectly and a substantial amount. We also had the calamari with garlic and chilli, this dish was quite small but cooked to perfection.
For sides we chose the rocket salad and fries.

We did have a very long wait between starters and mains, longer than others in the restaurant, which is the only reason it didn't get a perfect score.

The wait staff were excellent!

Overall very satisfied!
Jack
Overpriced, overhyped, poor service and living in the past.
Menu hasn't changed in over a decade, produce is not of quality it used to be and just stale in every way.
Saddens me to say, but won't be going back. Was a revelation in the old days but no more!!!
Natalie Edwards
$9 a prawn!
Had the classic creamy garlic prawns $18, out came 2 prawns on a half cup of rice. Are you serious? There was nothing creamy, garlicky or classic about this pitiful entree. Husband had the chilli prawns, again, two prawns at $9 a piece on top of half a cup of rice.
Main, I had a steak, few chips and 4 tiny broccoli flowerets, not worth the price tag. Husband had the linguine with not much seafood, unlike the pictures posted on Zomato. Dessert was a very dry microwaved sticky date with lemon gelato that left an even more sour taste in my mouth than the entree. Give it a miss.

Have been to rst when it was in Richmond . This is an old style restaurant that serves the freshest produce consistently. Chilli prawns are always popular, coffin bay oysters, scallops and fish of the day. Good for special occasion.
I Love Food
Dined here last night with a Living Social voucher. Great value for $59 - 3 course meal and a drink each. For entrée I had the scallop & prawn gyoza's & hubby had the bug tails in honey & sesame seeds. Both were tasty and good size portion for starter. For my main I had chilli king prawns. I got 4 prawns which were a good size but only 4 of them and I had to clean the poo line out myself so wasn't impressed by that. If this is the usual size of this main $36 is too pricey for what you get, you must serve more prawns for that price and clean them properly. I was expecting a good chilli hit being chilli prawns but they were mild, flavour was nice but you need chilli in chilli prawns. Hubby had fresh snapper fish in coconut & lemongrass broth, looked great and tasted delicious too and was served with rice. He had ordered a side of veges which never came out. For dessert we both enjoyed the chocolate & raspberry fondant. This was delicious and my fav dish of the night. Quite large but looked and smelled great and oozed with chocolate when I cut it open. Overall the food was good and service by the wait staff was good but let down by the kitchen staff. Unsure if they were understaffed but it took a long time between courses to get our meals and then we never got our side of veges which we asked for a few times and were told they're coming out now, they just take a few minutes. The wait staff were apologetic and offered us free tea/coffee with dessert. Dining here on this deal was great value, would I return and pay full price, probably not. Parking was hard also, we were happy to walk so parked about 5-10 mins walking distance away.

Don't let the exterior fool you. The food here is amazing! Ordered pretty much every starter and a main and were extremely happy with every single dish. Standouts: the seafood chowder, bug and prawn pies, scallops with bacon on corn puree and creamy bug gnocchi. Wear stretchy pants you will want to eat EVERYTHING. Will 100% be back!
Nick The Greek
Really good food!! We stumbled on this place and can only compliment the owners on the quality of the food and the great service. A nice little bar attached for pre or post dinner drinks. Fantastic oysters!!
Amy
A great spot for dinner if you're in the area. The seafood is genuinely fresh and seems to be lovingly prepared. Tempura prawns are awesome. I actually found the portions of the mains to be satisfying, so I think they've taken notes from past reviews. I had the pan fried local snapper cooked perfectly in a balanced coconut broth. Bit of a weird ambiance - kinda like you're at a restaurant in the burbs but it's kind of kitschy n cool. Service is great too!
Stefgusts
Came for Mother's Day lunch, this place can't seriously call themselves a seafood restaurant because I could barely see food on any of the plates
Rmem
Tiny portions and overpriced! The grilled calamari came with 3 pieces, plus weird slimy pieces that were undercooked and made us feel ill for hours after. The Moreton bay bug ravioli was $36 and looked like an entree- we were given only 3 ravioli! Obviously not much fish in the sea at the moment, the seafood grill was made up of 2 teeny goldfish (whiting), 2 prawns, teeny weeny scallops and a single tube of calamari - rip off. The linguine seafood pasta and gnocchi were the only meals that looked half decent. The highlight of today was the bread rolls and chocolate rocks that were given for free. This place is riding the wave of having a good name in the past, and needs to lift its game if it wants to survive in Fitzroy!
Vijay Nair
I usually don't write reviews but this spectacular FAIL just had to be called out.

The restaurant (not bar) is apparently NOT open Sundays but yet they took my wife's booking for Mother's Day dinner without mentioning that! Even called us to confirm the booking. Good thing we decided to call and double check before leaving home.

Looks like the service has gone downhill since we were there last year. Pity as the food here is generally good. Thanks a lot for ruining Mother's Day for us!

Had the pleasure of dining here and with such a great rating knew I was in for a treat! It did not disappoint! Absolutely scrumptious and tasty! Service was very attentive and setting was all class..in the actual room. The only criticism was the slightly inflated prices vs the morsel portions! Other then that, very satisfying!

It doesn't get any better than this place if you enjoy seafood. Stunning food and excellent service. Can not speak more highly of this restaurant.
Kimmy_desu
Had a relaxing late lunch at the tapas bar here this afternoon (the restaurant is closed on Sundays but the tapas bar is open) and we had a fantastic time. It was quite hot outside and the air-con was on full blast even though we were the only table (it was 2:30pm in the afternoon so probably past normal meal times for most people). We had a few tapas to share - a seafood chowder each, two crab cakes, tempura chilli prawns and grilled fish in lemongrass & Thai sauce. The owner (I assumed so) was very friendly and constantly asked how our food was throughout our meal. The seafood chowder was a small bowl of rich creamy broth with some prawns and salmon. It tasted great along with some pepper. The other dishes were all sort of Thai-style and also delicious. The crab cakes and tempura prawns were fried well and had a good choice of dressings to enhance the flavours. The fish was tender and came with a bowl of jasmine rice. The sauce was so yummy that I could eat the rice just with that. Had a quick chat with the owner and he said the place is only 3 weeks old (I forgot whether he said 3 weeks or 3 months but it's pretty new nonetheless), it's probably a new location under the Richmond Seafood Tavern name. The tapas bar used to be a pub so the ambience is quite laid-back. It's definitely an excellent choice for a light meal or nibbles with a few drinks. Wines by the glass are very reasonably priced. Would return sometime to the restaurant next door and enjoy a wider array of beautiful seafood.

Absolutely beautiful seafood! Highly recommended. Friendly staff.. nice setting. Some of the best seafood I've eaten in a long time. Will definately return.

Hidden Gem in Fitzroy! Don't judge a book by it's cover otherwise you may never know the joy of fresh seafood served, cooked well and served with a smile.

For a lazy Friday lunch with a work colleage we treated ourselves, driving from St'Kilda Rd and were simply delighted. I had simple flathead tails (in batter) accompanied with a bottle of Tasmanian Pinot Grigio. The serving of fish was huge and the flesh firm, plump and moist coated in a batter so light and crisp.

The owner recommended the wine (one of the lowest priced bottles) and it was so nice.

We were early (12:00) and there were plenty of tables in the dining area, but it was packed soon enough. I look forward to going again soon.

Returned but to the new location that isn’t in Richmond! The restaurant has a nice interior, there’s no wow factor, that is dimly lit that lends itself perfectly to a intimate or quiet dinner for smaller groups. We were there on a Saturdsay night and there were a few tables vacant and the room isn’t too large so I thought that this could be an interesting dinner. We were a group of four and decided on ordeing a number of dishes and sharing. The starters are in the $15-$20 range and we had the oysters that were just perfect, fresh with an almost sweet taste. The Oysters Kilpatrick and Calamari fritti were also just perfect and were easy to devour. Our main courses, they start at about $40, were also very good, well presented and lovely to eat. The only let down was the flathead fillets – they were small, very small pieces. The desserts were OK at around $15 each, but the selection was fairly limited and I would have expected a better selection. The waiters are efficent, calm and very attentive without getting in the way of the conversation. It wasn’t a cheap after taking into account drinks but we did have an enjoyable evening in pleasant surrounds.

$232 for two persons and we both went home hungry. Table next to us ordered a second main and were also complaining about the size of the serves. Meals are OK but nothing to rave home about. Needless to say we wont be going back.

Beautiful & freah seafood. Can order a mix of seafood & they will create a platter for you. Great service & a cute boutique atmosphere too. Recommended

The chilli prawns, battered and beatifully cooked were so good we ordered another serve!

Perfect seafood, amazing service. Everything went so well, such a fantastic place to have some fresh seafood

Big Thumbs up!. Although quite pricey, this is my favourite seafood place to dine. Im constantly trying to wrangle people to come to this restaurant with me. Some of my favourites include the Crab Bruschetta, BBQ Jam Prawns and the Honey Sesame Bugtails. Even writing this post is making me hungry!
Katherine
We went there for our anniversary and everything was very delicious . We didn't taste the cray fish but we will go back to try it! :)

Had a very enjoyable celebration here- let them choose the food, it works!

I was skeptical about dining here due to some average reviews on the internet. With a push from my husband we dined here last weekend and what a pleasent surprise it was! RST is such a cost and inviting 'old school' tavern with great service and the most amazing seafood. I have been mourning the closure of live bait for the last few years as I thought they served the best Morton bay bugs in town - they didn't, this place does!!! Great wine and food - can't wait to come back!

Love it! Have been many times & always look forward to my next visit. The platters are the way to go. Great place for a long lunch!

Unexpected delight.. Randomly googled seafood, came across this one, phoned a booking, entered a bar, and saw an intimate restaurant. excellent service, friendly staff, and great food! Would recommend if you are craving seafood. ;)

Delicious. Went with my partner not too long ago, both of us completely shut up when we were enjoying our 3 course set meal. Loved the variety we got, very satisfying!

Yum!. I have to admit I was a little apprehensive when we had to walk through the pub to get to the restaurant - my fears were unfounded though!

We had the crab bruschetta, chilli prawns, honey and sesame bug tails, oysters naturale and the scallops wrapped in prosciutto. I couldn't fault any of it!

Service was great although they did tend to take their time. And I wouldn't say it was expensive but it wasn't super cheap either.

That said, can't wait to go back!
Delicious
Luv this place!. My husband & I have been coming here for years, the seafood is the best in Melbourne in my opinion. The staff are always friendly & the service exceptional! After reading some of the comments, I am very surprised that some people find it expensive, as I find it to be VERY reasonable especially if you get the banquets! A must try are the chilli prawns & the honey bug tails!
Rosely
Just finished a wonderful dinner at the new Richmond Seafood Tavern with the family. We had an assortment of starters including prawns, oysters, croquettes, stuffed calamari, seared tuna, soft shell crab, sardines and pasta. The service was wonderful and friendly. Looking forward to our next seafood bonanza here!

We back for the 2nd time - Not as good. The first time we went was great!

However it seems the second visit the portions we're a lot smaller. The Bugs tail looked more like a Tailette. Where as on the first visit it was huge!

Also, it's bloody expensive!

I like it there tho. Just don't skimp on the servings!
Stephanie
Great attentive staff, vast seafood menu. Good feel about the place and it was packed out when we went on a Wednesday night. Awesome crayfish
Brunchisbest
Chowder was disgusting. Was overly creamy and when questioned, the waiters were rude and arrogant about it. No one on the table finished it.
Will NEVER go here again.

POOR SERVICE COLD PLATES. Our daughter and son-in-law had been to the previous location and enjoyed it.
A booking was made for my wife's birthday and this meal spoiled an otherwise great day. Service here was very poor. The good food when served was generally let down by very poor coordination.
NOT to be recommended to our many friends who eat out.

The "big catch". Outstanding food, friendly service and an overall warm environment. Will be going back again. Ps - My apologies for the title - I thought i would try my hand at a creative title - I think this has helped clarify my desire to become a writer!

Fantastic Corporate Lunch!. 15 of us gathered for Lunch on Friday and were absolutely thrilled by the wonderful staff Matthew and Jody. They were absolutely warm, welcoming and very patient - we were a fussy and loud lot.
The food was exquisite - absolutely perfect and the wine, beverages etc. were amazing. What a great afternoon, highly recommended to anyone. Great seafood. THANK YOU.

Amazing Seafood. This is one of the best value for money seafood restaurants. All the seafood we ordered was perfectly cooked & tasted delicious. Loved the Whitebait fritters & seafood marinara pasta. Everyone at the table was really happy with their meals. The staff were friendly, accommodating & pleasant to deal with

Have a healthy bank balance. The food was nice and staff very pleasant. Service was good BUT for the price, you would hope so. Overpriced to high heaven. You can get this sort of
quality at a much more equitable price at just about any fine dining restaurant
in Melbourne - and chances are you will have alot more to eat than you get here. For the food it's worth the experience but for the money, give it a wide berth.

Best Seafood In Melbourne. I have been coming to The tavern for years even when they where in Richmond and the food and service is always fantastic. I think the prices are very reasonable for the fantastic food. Must try are the chilli prawns, the chilli bug tails, the prawn rolls. Its hard to fault any of the food here, if I could choose 1 I would say there chowder is average. Will always recommend this place.

-----09 Jun, 2013-----

Fantastic Seafood. If you like your seafood you will not be dissapointed.I have been coming to the richmond seafood tavern for years, when it was in richmond and also here in fitzroy and the food is always fantastic. The chilli bugs, the king prawn rolls and the bbq jam prawns the fish i could go on and on. Cant wait to come back and i was just there on saturday.

I love the Tavern. I must have been here a dozen times over the years including last Thursday. It's always great. Beautiful fresh seafood every time, nice wine list and excellent service. The story is always the same: I can't fault it.

Good food and good service but not exceptional and needs some background music

Great service. Bug tails to die for. Great selection of seafood. Bruschetta was a favourite. Desserts all good. Thanks.

Service lacking. No doubt the seafood was delicious. The service definitely let the place down though. We could hear a waitress bitching about customers from our table (near the kitchen). Our sides were also forgotten- not a problem at all until our waitress overtly insinuated that we hadn't ordered them and that it was our fault. It was a pity because the meal was really fantastic- particularly the scallops, but I wouldn't pay that price for bad service again.

Overprices and inadequate portions. Overall very small portions for the price...particularly entrees...potato wedges were saturated in oil and lacked taste! will not be back..what happened to the old Richmond seafood tavern?

Definately be back. Had a lovely lunch there today, ordered a platter between the three of us. The service was great, the atmosphere really nice and relaxing, I wish we could have stayed there longer, it reminded me of decades ago when you actually ate fresh Australian seafood. Three of us ate and shared a dessert, which we couldn't finish, all with a nice bottle of white recommended by the lady who served us - all for $150 mark. Thats a bargain I say.

If you like over priced frozen seafood then this is the place for you! Very disappointing with the food...service was good though.

Awesome. There were 4 of us & we all loved our food. Share platter for starters & lobster thermidore Yummo.
Staff were great, Danny the manager chose our entrees & what a great choice it was. Will be back & reccomend...

Very tasteful and classy atmosphere- perfect for a special occasion. Wait staff were wonderful, not at all arrogant or snobby which you might expect. Must get dish - chilli prawns. It is prawns served with a crunchy but not dry chilli mixture that is to die for, absolutely packed with flavour, and our table agreed it was particularly impressive because it had the perfect amount of chilli. Dont bother with kingfish carpaccio - the kingfish should have starred but was covered with a too oily and over powering dressing. The salad component on the dish was good though. Also the king prawn rolls and morton bay bug tails are worth a try. Would definitely go back and am keen to try other dishes on the great and vast menu because so many other things seemed appealing.

Never again. I have been eating in this restaurant since the week it opened in Richmond. I have always come away very happy. BUT Had a 60th birthday there on a Saturday night and I can honestly say it was way way below standard. I will not be back and I am crying about that.

Faaantastic!!!! Went there based on reviews I had read and wasnt disappointed! The food was amazing! So fresh and light, with fantastic flavors of each type of seafood coming through! And the calamari.. What can I say! About the freshest, cooked to perfection calamari I have ever had! Not rubbery in the slightest.. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. Had a fantastic night, and would defiantly go back again! My mouth is watering already!

Very Tasty and Fresh Seafood.. This place keeps it simple and let's the freshness of the fish do the talking. The range of Seafood is great and is backed up by a decent wine list. Very nice food.

Very Disappointed. Took the family to the Tavern, the fish was dry the service was poor lazy staff with no clear control over who was doing what.
Overpriced for what it is. It should try moving to Richmond

2011- OMG!!. Say no more....very tasty, fresh and fantastic flavours. If I was being picky I would aviod the ravioli, everything else is just devine, thanks RTS for a fantastic and enjoyable night last thursday!! will be back again soon - love the premises change...

October 2015 - Service here is always good, cant complain. But, heartbreakingly, the institutional greatness is flailing. The chef we were told has changed, and with it the menu which has a cult following from the original RST in Richmond, has also been amended. No King Prawn Rolls. Gone sadly are the chilli jam, oysters by the half or dozen, ANYWAY you like, reduced to just natural and kilpatrick for 3.5 each instead. In its place, white tail fritters which we sampled which were gluggy and under cooked, overcooked scallops and prawns, dressed with raw chilli, lacking in sauces, old fashioned tartare with the calamari was not to be seen. It made the meal feel quite dry and lacking. Please bring back the original chef, or tell me where I can find him. We were told it is quote now an 'Asian Fusion Thingy', however I got the impression it was not a chef whom specialised in seafood. I thought Asian Fusion was so 2000's? Sadly we wont be back and will instead make the trip to The Swallow for Rubira's. The things that made this place stand apart from others are now gone - along with ordering on a whim from the chalk board, with no formal menu.

This is by far the best seafood place going. The service and seafood is amazing. The beer always cold, all you need to do is turn up and leave the rest to Danny & Vince and the rest of the fantastic staff. If you are not happy with this place well you just can't be pleased. Try going to some of the upmarket places where you will pay double to dine with snobs.
Give it a go but book early
Cheers
John Bourke

Was not impressed for a seafood tavern to not have any lobster and half the other dishes on the menu available. You cannot call lettuce onion and tomato with a bit of dressing a salad.

Greta food - great atmosphere!. Enjoy a laid back lunch ...Calamari fritti, BBQ Jam Prawns and the Crayfish Pies are my favs - .........and Michelle Gratten your taste buds don't work!

But it's NOT in Richmond. Really why do people run food barns and call them restaurants? This food was akin to a chadstone foodcourt fare. The oysters were dry and i'm still feeling the effects of them 2 days later! The grilled fish was like dry burnt toast, and void of flavour and texture. The service was average, at least they tried to smile through what must have been a trying time. Putting on a brave face when you can tell the ship is sinking around them.
Next time i'll head to a food court when i want really bad seafood. Maybe i'll head out for a steak instead.

We decided to go with the seafood platters for entree and main and they were both delicious. Service and atmosphere was warm and friendly.

Lunch Favourite. This is my favourite lunch place in Melbourne.

The food is just the best? Not sure what
I like most, because every time I go, I get recommended something else, which is seasonal.

Wine list, is extensive, and fairly priced.

Waiting staff, are just the best, older more mature, giving you just what you want.

Do yourself a favour, make a booking, here, as you won't regret it.

PS> Don't let the unobtrusive entrance and building out you off, it's nice and welcoming inside.

Well Thorn must have dined on the wrong day! Just a fabulous experience had by my group of 6 just last week - service, quality and variety of Seafood all excellent.
Word Of Advice
A Thorn in Melbourne's Restaurant Scene. For a restaurant claiming to specialize in seafood, I would avoid at all cost.

After a group of us trialed a great variety and range of dishes off their chalkboard menu, the majority of the group walked away extremely disappointed. With the market fish served filleted on an empty plate, the curried scallops tasting of simple off the shelf curry powder and the garlic prawns being drowned in oil and heavy garlic. The prices reflect that of some of the best seafood restaurants in the country, while the food stood strong amongst the worst. To add salt to the wound, the service left a lot to be desired and the temptation or perhaps the responsibility to walk away wanting to write a realistic review very relevant.

I'm sorry to say but with the calibre of Melbourne's seafood restaurants, the below reviews must be written by staff and management of this second rate establishment

Itscaro. Scrumptious FRESH seafood... THE BEST in Melbourne! that we have had i.e.. Lovely staff, very friendly & helpful. Yes it is pricey, but as they? say, you get what you pay for.. not always TRUE, but this place is spot on. Lobsters are HUGE! tender, & delicious, AND NOT FROZEN.

Melbourne's best kept seafood secret. Ignore the decor and odd location and head straight for the seafood platter. The bug tails and pawns are a must.

Busy and deservedly so. A group of 5 of us had a long lunch there and after numerous plates of appetizers finished off with some of the tastiest fish I've had in a long time. Oysters and mussels were first rate and the egg wash fillets almost melted. Service was excellent despite the packed restaurant. Not cheap.... But most likely due to our wine consumption. Highly recommended.

I was there on Saturday night with a party. The food was fantastic and the service great. We had a platter between 6 people and selected what went on it. The food is not cheap, bordering on expensivePD Sound Reproduction soundhouse. I
