Review Neighbourhood Wine - North Fitzroy

Jack Neale
We had a long day & showed up without a booking on a Friday evening, they went out of their way to fit us in. The service on both the food & the wine was absolutely amazing, honestly we’re still sitting at the table & are excited to come back. The range of wine is vast & the waitresses knowledge on such wines was equally as impressive (Mel). Music and ambiance was also a vibe 🎶 Perfect for every occasion, highly recommend 🙏

Was really expecting this place to be great, however the food was a let down and service was really poor. Ambience is really nice and warm however nothing special here. Mains was below average in taste and the waiter was not friendly or helpful. Would recommend going elsewhere where you can get both good wines and good food for better value

The food here is on the expensive side but the staff were friendly and the drinks menu was expansive. The atmosphere was also lovely and warm. I unfortunately had a bad experience with their steak. I ordered it Medium-rare but it came out cooked unevenly, rare-blue in the center of the steak with only the outside edges were actually medium-rare. It was very gamey and chewy and was absolutely covered with the sauce that overwhelmed the taste of the actual steak. Thankfully they were happy to take it off our bill when it was sent back. Lot's of professionalism was displayed by the staff. May return there again.

I was going to give this place a 5⭐️ after only sitting outside but once I went inside it was set. A very good restaurant. A gem to be honest. The food incredible, the wine amazing , and the staff very friendly. I love on the south and am jealous a place this good doesn’t exist in my neighbourhood. This place is so good it make you want to leave your neighbourhood to be near it. Honestly is there a higher complement.

We've just spent $10 on one single cracker. I was defensively advised by the staff that "it's a snack", like I'm meant to just accept that. I've prepaid a 5% tip I now regret. The wine is good but would have appreciated some level of empathy from the wait staff.

I’ve been here for a few meals as I’m close by. The Sunday Roast is ok and all my meals have been good but never great. It’s pretty pricey for the quality of what they are putting up. The service has been mixed, some staff seem pretty uninterested. The outside of the building looks like an abandoned squat. I don’t understand why they don’t have the horrible graffiti removed, it’s a blot on the neighbourhood and I’ve never taken out of town guests there for that reason.

Heard some good reports about this place. But when I attend with a few others last Sat, I was not impressed. Food was pricey for what was provided. Wine list was extensive but many unknown and also on the high side. Noisy space, made it difficult to have a conversation across the table.

Distinctly old school charm with an impenetrable but delicious menu. Get the chefs choice selection and relax with a bottle of wine. Choice of wines were great but staff were overwhelmed and didn’t know the menu, even spilt the water in our lap. Oh dear!

This used to be one of my fave local restaurants and after tonight's experience I'm concerned by what has changed in their quality of both food and wine but also by the staff. They were sickenly patronizing and boorish. Food went downhill. Some of the worst $70 wine I've had (is this red kombucha or Wine? - even sommelier said he wouldn't recommend it. And it's on the list) and my fave dishes were not cooked to taste (why ask?) or poorly done. I'm embarrassed I brought my friends to your establishment

Intriguing booze list and food that's just damn good quality, seasonal, and finally a triumphant female chef minus the ego. I've recommended this place as an ultimate Melbourne dining experience to overseas visitors...(And I've been to a lot of the " Worlds Top 50" eateries... that don't cut it..) The ambiance, music and staff just keep it real.

My first reaction is to say based on this my first visit, I wouldn't be rushing back. To be fair, the venue was lovely, the staff exceptional and the menu promising. Our first course of Snapper croquettes, so delicious, we ordered a second round. However, our mains took an age to arrive and when they did, they were underwhelming. Two serves of steak ordered, one cooked as requested (medium) was reportedly lovely. The second (med rare), overcooked and almost too tough to cut through. Once notified, staff immediately replaced this meal. The goat served with polenta was tender, but the dish was bland. On reflection, we all agreed, they were not dishes we'd return to have again and really for the cost of the evening ($90 a head), we really could have done better in any one of dozens of eateries in the area. Having said all that, and reading everyone's else's reviews, perhaps we were just unlucky and I'll keep an open mind to a second try at some stage.

Highly recommend, food, wine and cocktails all amazing. Great atmosphere and service, will definitely be back.

My go to for an excellent lunch or relaxed dinner. Small super seasonal menu that changes daily. Great wines by the glass. Very consistent quality, informed and warm service, so glad it's around the corner.

I can't believe that this place has been around for four years and I only just discovered it. We had a great night and loved our meals. I would definitely come again.
Spencer Alexander Burson
Such a wonderful experience I especially loved the tall charismatic Englishman he made my evening 💘💘

I attended a birthday party here this afternoon and it was wonderful! The quirky, retro look of the place is fabulous, the food was excellent and the staff were wonderful- very attentive and pleasant. Will be going back for dinner soon.

We organised to have our friends Bridal Shower lunch here and from start to finish the service was amazing. Staff were friendly and super helpful. Service on the day couldn't have been better, the food was delicious and really good value.

Tattooed thirty somethings abound. Wine list dominated by French wines. The by the glass menu is filled with hipster pleasing organic/bio/orange wines. Seems that the focus is more funky than flavour. That said the menu was surprisingly good. Busy and noisy , if you are after a quiet romantic dinner , move along , if you want to try something chic and hip give it a go. Service whilst a little slow, was satisfactory given they were full.
Barry Minster
Excellent food and good value. Will definitely return.

We ordered a banquet. Main course was beef, but i told waitess i do not eat beef. She said there would be vegetarian options. This meant i could have the salad and the chips that came with the beef. some of the chips were sitting on beef blood/juice. No effort was made to compensate me. I literally paid $60 for a couple of slices of deli meat and salad. I went home hungry. Would not recommend for people with dietary conditions.
Amelia Redpath
Amazing wine and excellent service. We had a bridal shower here and the staff were very attentive and accomodating. The food was delicious and great value
Daniel McBride
Awesome bar, excellent service, delicious food and really affordable tasty wine. A must for anyone in Melbourne.
Stephen Howard
The best steak on earth and the wine selection is niche and extensive!
Sophie Lee
Very nice as always with friendly staff, this joint is one of our favourites

I ordered Ubereats from Neighbourhood Wines tonight and it was seriously good! Beautiful, quality food and even better customer service. Will definitely be back, really appreciate it guys!

Nice space. Very nice food. We had shared plates and they were very good. Service was very good. Extensive wine list but most of it is on the pricey side. It’s a good place but be prepared to pay.

Classy food in a relaxed environment at a great price! Don't sleep on this place for a weekday lunch- For $50 we had 2 courses, a shared side and a glass of wine. I started with the Roast beetroot, radish, rye miso salad in which every mouthful was a delight. The pan fried dory with lick the plate yummy sorrel butter and the slightly salty pigface. Big shout out to the fat crispy chips which were the best ive had since i had ones cooked in duck fat at Vue Du Monde. I ended up having dessert as well which was a deconstructed brandy snap with white peach, macadamias and ice cream. A chilled glass of the Koerner Bright Red was a great accompaniment. I'll be back very soon!

This place is beautiful, and completely and utterly aesthetically overwhelming if you're into mid-century vintage. It was actually so pretty I could have cried. So many gorgeous pieces of furniture, stained glass, and old school fittings all illuminated with natural spring light. Ahhh. The wine list was extensive and unique (as far as I could tell, I'm not particularly wine-literate) and the menu was small, but classy and enticing. We had the gnocchi, which was perfectly piping hot, oily and delish, and the bread to start was sticky, sour and thick cut. We got the asparagus and zucchini sides, which were both small but flavoursome and rich... It was all a complete treat. Our waiter was a walking wine encyclopedia - I learnt a lot and it was lovely that he took the time out to chat wine to us.  I loved the old school vibe / 21st century class & innovation combo - thanks heaps for the lovely meal.

I don't like to give poor ratings because maybe it was a once-off but I would give this place 1 star... I gave them 3 because I felt bad.<br/>Dined at NW for fathers day lunch. Was pleasantly pleased with my choice when we rocked up... cosy inside and decor feels like you are in a British Inn. The service wasn't terrible, not good though. I'm always bemused at restaurants when the waiter seems like they don't really like people! Get another job behind a desk you fool!!!<br/>Oh but the food was pretty bloody rubbish. We were on a $40 per head 3 course menu. Bread and butter was definitely the best meal! The cured salmon with some kind of onion jam... ewwww not a good combo at all! Then roast pork with deep fried unseasoned potatoes. Pork was dry not near as good as my amature hands can make at home. Dessert was ok, but just that, ok.

ATTENTION: To the owners of Neighbourhood Wine do yourself a favor and divorce yourself of the miserable waiter who is destroying any chance of repeat business - and to make it clear he’s the heavy set individual who wears vintage pineapple shirts and an overgrown beard.<br/><br/>I have not experienced this level of negative customer service at a fine dining restaurant for some years. It really was quite shocking and ultimately ruined our night. We left this establishment feeling disgusted. He inadvertently made the $380 worth of food and wine taste awful.<br/><br/>Abrupt, cold, clumsy, unhelpful are just a few words to describe his performance on this particular night. We all have bad days but don’t bring your negative attitude to work - I’m paying your wage!<br/><br/>Generally the portion size was small and the menu was difficult to read and at no point did the Hawaiian shirt wearing man attempt to offer any assistance. It seems as though the owners have been lazy and created a menu which accommodates for both events/parties and regular dining.<br/><br/>First and last visit for me.
Jjjj
The worst value I’ve ever experienced. Pay $85 for steak and chips that is enough to feed a small child as long as the small child had a big breakfast. You are able to have the wine you can drink. However after tasting it you quickly realise that that is not all that much. The waiter has zero personality which he is passing off as sophistication.<br/>Simply horrendous.<br/>Go to somewhere like the marquise of Lorne instead
Jon Row
Amazing looking venue, we had the Sunday roast which was decent, all the staff where nice except one guy who seemed completely inconvenienced by us being there, he was quite rude and sullen the whole time.It is really frustrating in good venues like this as it ruins what otherwise would have been a great lunch.
Erin King
This is my favourite spot for a Sunday roast! Absolutely amazing food and wine list. The atmosphere is relaxed, and has such character. The three course roast is $40 and used seasonal produce.
Sophie Maclure
Food was delicious. We were able to get a booking on Saturday for Saturday night. We shared a bunch of meals and they were all so good!!! Great for vegetarian options as well. The duck liver parfait was incredible along with the kingfish 🤤! All organic wines, beautiful and cozy interior!

What a great little find in this (not so small) restaurant hiding behind a small doorway and a set of stairs. It opens up to 3 main rooms including one with an open fire.<br/><br/>It’s not called neighbourhood wine without good reason. It has bottles of wine from everywhere in the world stored all over the place, and it has a range of slightly unusual and very interesting wines; including organic, biodynamic, and some very interesting combinations of grapes. We though we would try something different; and indeed it was like nothing I’ve drunk before but it was lovely. A great recommendation.<br/><br/>The food is very interesting. They change the menu everyday. The combination of charcuterie and picked vegetables is a winner.<br/><br/>We had a two small plates (a cured kingfish and duck liver parfait) which were delicious. They were very happy to serve extra toast as the parfait was generous.<br/><br/>For main the lamb was great. Wonderful fall off the bone texture and interesting textures with the roast almonds, along with two side salads. The roast cabbage was most interesting as I actually thought it tasted like eggplant and the hazelnut provided a great contrasting texture again. <br/><br/>Overall a great experience. Lovely knowledgeable and enthusiastic waiters. And on another night the two seats in front of the fire would be a great place to finish another interesting wine!
Eliza Pixie
poorest service I’ve experienced in a long time, after booking a private room for the bottomless wine and four course lunch for a duration of three hours we were quite shocked to discover the service ended when the last plates were served. we politely asked if we were able to continue the service for the final hour as this hadn’t been explained upon booking and we were rudely dismissed and given one bottle of wine for 15 people. This was their ‘above and beyond’!?... shocking

First time here for Sunday roast lunch and it was so delicious!!! Beetroot for starters, roast porterhouse with the works aka chat potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, salad and a parsnip cake with chinotto ice cream to finish off the meal. Seriously good value for 40 bucks, wish I found out earlier 😇

The nicest atmosphere, the loveliest waitress, great wine selection, super super mediocre food :( just not that tasty :( will totally go back for drinks 🍸

Upon arrival we were greeted by friendliness and smiley faces. The menu for both food and wine are interesting and exciting. We had a few of the bite-size starters, 2 small and 4 large dishes with a table of 4 people. All dishes were very nice. We weren't able to finish all of our large dishes, which we do feel guilty about (and it was a shame that we didn't get to try dessert). Steak was lovely. Goat was very tender, but could've had a bit more flavour. We had a lovely Rioja to drink. All great, not cheap but not super expensive either (our bill was just under $400, but we went all out). This place had been on my list for way too long and I am happy I finally got to try it. I will definitely be back!
Timbo
Great upstairs wine venue which seems to have an endless number of rooms and tables in the bar.<br/><br/>Quite old world in its makeup with record player, great music and very positive ambience.  <br/><br/>The wine selection for the price I requested was fantastic ... big, rustic and a very drinkable chardonnay which respected the old chardy's but had some body and memorable characteristics.<br/><br/>They appear to pride the place on stocking wine which is memorable, not the run of the mill and has some unique character.   From memory, I will be back as the wine they served me was fantastic.<br/><br/>Food was also interesting and unique - but not low cost.<br/><br/>Enjoy and if you want a wine, I would recommend this above many others.<br/><br/>Cheers

The waiting staff are friendly, and the bar staff know their stuff. The food is good. We had dinner in the separate dining room and the floor was a bit uneven, making it difficult for people with heels. Apart from that, a good night.
Massivebird
Was underwhelming. Dishes are small and lacked flavor. Atmosphere was good and had a great time regardless. I’ll try Sunday roast next time.

A classic Melbourne experience in which an unassuming exterior hides a wonderfully fitted out bar. Ascend the staircase and you'll find wood panels and leather seats, gold-edged mirrors and stained glass windows. Such a good atmosphere. We stopped by for a drink and a snack: fat, pillowy chips with aioli and some kind of delicious smoked eggplant thing. The wine was fab, the staff attentive, and there was a real record player soundtracking the night. A new favourite!
Christine
Hi <br/>A friend recommended this restaurant and we are still friends! The place situated on the first floor is very cosy and I was delighted at the way the staff looked after us from the beginning to the end. Very good selection of wines, my fish was excellent so were the dishes of my companions . Will definitely give another go.

Really enjoyed this old school hidden gem - fine food, drink, furnishings, service and atmosphere.  Reminded me of the sort of glam joint that tour managers would take their best and brightest to for an indulgent lunch or dinner.

Tucked away just off Nicholson Road is Neighbourhood Wine. We don’t have a booking which is dangerous on a Friday, but we have the choice of two tables, or the long stretch of empty bar space. In sync, Catherine and I choose to sit at the bar, although we were questioning the look of the actual bar stools.<br/><br/>It turns out, the bar stools are very comfy, and beautifully coordinate with the look and feel of this unusual space. Every nook and cranny is filled with bottles of wine, and where not dedicated to wine there is something kitsch in its place. Even the space just outside the toilet has a few dozen bottles of wine.<br/><br/>Wine by the glass is generally natural, with organic featuring heavily. Both of the reds that we try are excellent. The first is a Nebbiolo that has accentuated classic flavours and body that you associate with this variety. Second is a medium bodied Cinsault from the Barossa that takes a little time to open up, eventually showing good length.

Been coming here since the year it opened. Besides having the best atmosphere in town (especially in the wintertime), their ethos for quality has always been consistent and far above average. Service is always great, and now and again exceptional. Last night was one my more memorable visits when everything we had was WOW. A tiny mistake was also dealt with impeccably. It truly lives up to its name, and I will always happily return.

I don't understand why this place doesn't have a higher rating. This is definitely one of my favourites.<br/><br/>I have been here a number of times and have never been disappointed. Most recently went, food was really nice. I always order too much and they do have decent sized portions. <br/><br/>Didn't receive as much attention from wait staff as we had previously. But it is generally our go to restaurant.
Mireille
Hidden gem! Food is fantastic, the place is quaint and the service is great. This is one of only 2 places that I will eat steak in Melbourne. Highly recommend.
Anthea Robins
Came here one night for a bite to eat and some nice wine.<br/>The waiter was really arrogant and dismissive to us and told us we probably were at the wrong restaurant, but the food and wine was really nice so made up for the really average service.
Chocolate Habibi
This place is the best local ever, even if your from another suburb just pretend.  Huge wine selection daily changing menu with amazing small sharing options and lots of cosy spots to little away hours of conversation, my goto for a glass or 8.
BlueJay
Came here with my partner on the recommendation of a friend, but was very underwhelmed.  Atmosphere was good and the menu looked great, however as it was just the two of us went only for mains (in my head I was planning a visit with lot's more people to try all the smalls!). However I ordered steak - medium rare, my partner had the Snapper. After a solid 45 minutes awaiting our meals both were decidedly 'warm' rather than hot, and I would classify my steak as medium-well, rather than medium-rare and generally not that nice.  My partner felt his fish was dry and was underwhelmed by the sides (as was I).  Luke-warm also seemed to be the theme that night with service to match. It felt a little like the staff had better things to do, aloof; perhaps we were in between them and clocking off.  And to top it all off I can only think my wine was the last dregs of a bottle that had been opened for some time as it was truly woeful.  Whilst generally I will always give a place a second go and put it down to new chef / wait staff / bad menu selection, but in this case we both agreed we'd not  be returning as the whole experience just was not a nice one. I'd suggest this may be a better as a 'drinking' establishment than a dinning one.
Ev
meh. average service - little to no effort. nobody attended to me upon entering, even if staff saw me. average food - steak was a little too salty and overdone. dont know why there's a sign at the entrance that says something like "sunset club welcomes you" - pretty confusing, even if that's just "art". being "cool and hidden" is one thing, but it's plain annoying to walk up a flight of stairs just to walk down again to check i didn't walk into "Sunset Club" by accident...
Kirsty
Excellent customer service, staff friendly, helpful & attentive. Great wine list and good selection of beer. Starts and mains delicious, steak melt in the mouth. Great dinner out with friends
Sugar_licks
Booked birthday dinner, was greeted warmly and taken to table quickly, orders a glass of wine to drink while I waited for the others to arrive, staff were attentive and helpful. Menu reads well with everything sounding delicious we ordered the terrine which was delicious, the trout which was the standout out of the entrees as it was picture perfect and flavoursome, and the croquettes which were presented beautifully. Mains were goat which was so tender, steak cooked perfectly, the gnocchi was pretty ordinary, and the snapper which was just amazing. A good night out at a pretty lovely venue
Stunsail
Amazing atmosphere and service, with the sort of wine selection and knowledge that's perfect for bringing along a friend or work colleague to impress. And food that is so good I once attempted to replicate it at home! I'm looking forward to parking next to the log fire in winter and having another feast
Tina Tran
Had dinner for the second time here last night and it was even better than we remembered the first time! Service was attentive and food was delicious. The steak is a must!

Hidden gem, great ambience, wine matching to food excellent, great steak and fat chips. <br/>Wait staff dedicated and friendly. Packed for a Monday night. Menu changes are wonderful idea
Jane Makin
What a delight! A last minute pick for a night out with with the husband and we were not disappointed. <br/>Amazing wine list, efficient service, and most importantly delicious food. Gnocchi was a stand out. Will be back!

Came here for Sunday lunch with a booking for 5 ppl.<br/>Enjoyed the ambience and the value for food. We had the 3course roast menu $35 & 2 courses for $45. The service was good for a busy lunchtime, food was great, great large wine selection to choose from.<br/><br/>E: Cured Hiramasa Kingfish, pickled young fennel and doll<br/>M: Roasted beef with Yorkshire pudding w potato, carrots and green beans<br/>D: vanilla icecream w blood orange jelly<br/>There was no fault with entree fish, the main was perfectly cooked, dessert was meant to come with lemon ice cream but vanilla was given instead.<br/><br/>

Dinner last night with little group of four. Pleased to be able to make an online booking, as phone bookings are like 😬. Anyway, in a nutshell, food was good but meal was sensational. Does that make sense? A meal with friends is the sum of so many things. Food, wine, setting, service, whether you can hear each other without shouting. Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick. All I know is we left very happy. This place is a gem.
EatMeMelbourne
Well, I was looking forward to a casual dinner here with a couple of friends but left very disappointed. I am happy to pay for good food, but sadly, this experience fell short on several counts. Yes, it's very cool that Neighbourhood wine is quite hidden away, it's 'so melbourne', and it definitely has the wow factor in terms of the ambience - but the food? Simply not good enough. $16 for literally 3 skinny pieces of asparagus which were just ok. The kingfish was equally underwhelming. The food also took a very long time to arrive, my main dish of snapper hitting the table at 10pm (we ordered before 8.30pm). We received a brief apology from the waitress in the form of 'sorry guys we had a few functions on tonight', which, quite frankly I don't really view as an excuse. I'll save my pennies for a place that is a little less 'cool' and can actually deliver on the food and service.
Meeateor
One of those discrete, hidden-away quality places that's so Melbourne. Walk up steps that feel like you've snuck into a (very stylish) nanna's apartment, and enter to the smell of amazing food cooking in the open kitchen and a quirky bar with a fantastic wine list. Loved them all, but a personal favourite was the Pais (Chilean red).
Enjoy It
Sunday lunch, great service great atmosphere great food great experience nuf said :).
Littleguy11
Such a great place, highly recommend trying. Couldn't fault food or drinks, everything I ate was delicious! loved the atmosphere too.<br/>Travelled a while to get here, stumbling across only when searching Zomato. Glad I went out of my way. The only thing I can say was that on Zomato it says $120 for two with drinks. But it was more pricey as the wine list has lots of imported wines. Average price for bottle $65 and kept going up from there. Can be an expensive night.

Love this place! So lucky it's in my hood, the food is gorgeous, amazing wine selection, atmosphere is cosy & warm, and staff are the perfect combination of friendly & professional! 👌👌👌<br/>Great night out for any occasion & would impress a date for sure! <br/>The duck terrine on the menu now is phenomenal 😮😋😋😋
Luna
Went here for the 3-course Sunday lunch for $35 & it was lovely. Nice food & warm atmosphere, however if you're after a traditional hearty "home" Sunday roast, you may want to look elsewhere. Only downfall was the wine list by the glass... It would be nice to see more wines that aren't "organic" or "natural" without having to fork out a buck on a whole bottle.
Annie Smith
Love the history in regards to the building and the fact it used to be an old illegal gambling den. The food is fantastic / the wine list and wine cellar is pretty unbeatable for those who want to get serious. A total local gem.
Georgie Porgie Puddin&Pie
Snagged a spot by the fire and enjoyed the cosy relaxed atmosphere, amazing food, great wine, fantastic service. Will absolutely be visiting again
Onara
Hard not to give this place five stars, when the feel is so casual, yet the food and wines are so tremendous. Their menu is short and unpretentious, seasonal and thoughtfully prepared. Just wonderful!
CDee
Love coming here and have so a couple times now. The menu is small and changes often to match what's in season so there is always something new to try. They have an extensive beverage list where you can try things you might not normally have.
Ashdown
Been here a few times now and it never disappoints. The food is consistently great and the service as well. It's so good to have a place like this less than 5 minutes walk from home. Will be back.

Saturday lunchtime was spent at Neighbourhood Wine where we were whisked back to a bygone era reminiscent of Harry's Bar in Venice. We literally felt we could have been in 20s or 40s Venice with the wood panelling, old fashioned stools and chairs. I can imagine this place is gorgeous in the evening with twinkling candlelight and could be the perfect neighbourhood drop in spot for moonlight and romance.
Alisha Hopkins
This place is amazingly and under rated! <br/>We live nearby and stumbled across it randomly - it is very cute and the food is delicious - especially all the starters - we have now made dinner here a regular occurrence! Yum!
C
Great venue with a nice cosy feel. Very good selection of wines (as the name suggests!) and great homely food. A somewhat small menu selection. although enough to share amongst small groups. Recommend this place for some casualesque dining and a few glasses of vino.
The City Lane
Located above the original Woodstock pizza restaurant, Neighbourhood Wine Fitzroy North is a Modern Australian restaurant that first opened back in early 2013. We’ve visited Neighbourhood Wine several times since it’s opened and in that time it’s become somewhat of a local favourite
Carlton_Mama
Turned up for dinner without a reservation on a reasonably busy Friday night and the dark haired maitre'd welcomed us in like old friends.<br/>Service was quick and efficient, wine selection was good with most boxes ticked,<br/>The guys had the steak dish and raved about the fat chips, I had the snapper which was cooked really beautifully and melted in the mouth, also special mention for the crusty bread and the most delicious salted butter! This is the neighbourhood 's best kept secret !
Rita Loves Life
This is my favourite bar/restaurant in North Fitzroy.  It has a cozy atmosphere with friendly staff on hand.  The food is really good although I think the serves could be a bit larger.
Out And About
Came here in a group of 10 for a 30th. We had the $65 option without wine, I was disappointed by the size of the portions (tiny). The food wasn't particularly interesting or good, however despite all this, the atmosphere was phenomenal. Apparently staff from the premises below (Woodstock) accidentally discovered an abandoned (fully furnished) gambling den upstairs. Everything was untouched! This was converted into Neighborhood Wine. With fine timber finishes, a fireplace and a full size billiard table you could not help but have your imagination run away with what could have happened in this space.
Andrew
Neighbourhood Wine is great. Recommended by Delicious Magazine and well warranted.<br/>Very good bar for a pre dinner drink (Aperol spritz and a martini).<br/>Warm atmosphere, friendly staff.<br/>Food outstanding. Goat (braised 14 hrs) was amazing. Brussels on the side were phenomenal.
Le_orange
Yes!! Neighbourhood wine has a fabulous wine menu, fresh produce and an innovative menu and great customer service. Love the atmosphere and can't wait to return.

A cute venue, very cosy, especially with the roaring fire. We did the $75 fixed special with wines, which was really nice. The cheese plate was delicious, and I also really enjoyed the tender steak and crispy chips. Though the icecream/sorbet we got for dessert was nice, I personally would have preferred a more substantive dessert. If you are really able to enjoy the wine, this deal is very good value... if you are restrained (like me at the moment thanks to medical reasons) and can only drink a glass, it is on the pricy side.

Have been to Neighbourhood Wine numerous times and had a 30th birthday dinner for 10 people in the private room 12 months ago. The food has been amazing on every occasion and the staff are always friendly and attentive. I think it is the pick of the restaurants in North Carlton / North Fitzroy. The wines are a little pricey though.

Amazing food, interesting wines and friendly staff. A friend recommended we go to Neighbourhood Wine while holidays from Queenstown and I'm so glad they did. You enter via a side entrance and go up the stairs which opens up to a really cool dining room. A really friendly guy greeted us and seated us next to a really quaint open fire. All of the food was great but standouts were the terrine which our waiter told us they make in-house, the gnocchi and the slow cooked goat. A lot of the wines were unfamiliar but recommendations from the waiter were all spot on. All in all a really memorable meal and one of the best overall experiences we had in Melbourne.

Staff are absolutely amazing and flexible. I am allergic to.. well pretty much everything. And so had gotten used to either feeling horrendous for days every time we ate out or just not eating at all.<br/><br/>We came to neighborhood wine for my friends birthday. The restaurant catered to my allergies perfectly! The wait staff are amazing the manager was wonderful and I loved my experience here.<br/><br/>Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for great food who appreciates great service

This gave us time to peruse the sizeable wine list. It really is a fantastically put together list with a good representation of red and white from all the major wine-producing countries. The big’uns like France and Italy (as well as local Aussie listings) are split into regions, which helps with navigation. There are also listings from America (hard to get here), South Africa and Portugal; in fact most wine-producing countries get a mention – even Lebanon. We decided on the  2012 Calabretta ‘Cala Cala’ Vino Rosso Nerello Mascalese (Mt Etna $59). Quite a lot of graphite and red fruit opened up over time to some beautiful floral (rose) aromatics. Not bad, wouldn't go back. Steak was bland and tough, also overcooked.<br/>The drinks list was good but not great. The atmosphere seemed nice but without the food it's just another bar... nothing to crow about.

Great service and atmosphere. Excellent food and the chocolate icecream is out of this world amazing

Sunday Roast at Neighbourhood Wine, perfect for a lazy long Sunday lunch! A friend had come up with this genius idea and we were more than happy to make the trip across the city to the north side to sit down for a traditional roast in the company of good people. Neighbourhood Wine is located in an old illegal casino. Apparently there is still an old gambling table from back in the days that is hidden under a table (unfortunately we didn't find it) and the old-school TVs in the walls were used as CCTV cameras back in the days to alert the gamblers of a police raid that was about to happen. This decor stills tell the story from the old days of underbelly mafiosi and cigars. The whole bar has a cosy old-school feeling, there is an open fireplace  with couches to relax and plenty of tables to enjoy a meal. We all went for the $35 Sunday Roast Menu, which consisted of three courses. It started off with a Duck & Veal terrine, pickles and toast. The terrine was a classic dish well made, it wa

Absolutely fantastic is the only way I can begin to describe this place. Tucked upstairs above the Woodstock restaurant, the first thing you will notice is the gorgeous old-world charm of the ancient record players and mahogany bar, as well as vintage style furniture and décor throughout. It is worth coming to Neighbourhood simply to test out the extensive wine list and play on the remarkable 12 foot billiards table. Just viewing it is a pleasure in itself, the sheer feat of getting it up there very impressive.

Hmm, steak with fat chips served with two lettuce leafs... So in imaginative. To the point of boring.<br/><br/>When we finished the waiter dumped the menu on our table... Must have been too hard to ask "would you like desert or cheese?" "How was your meal?" <br/><br/>Frankly, you get more customer service at Dominos! <br/><br/>Menu is minimal with a small selection of mains or starters.<br/><br/>Food was 'okay'<br/>presentation 'average',<br/>service 'non existent'<br/>Would I return, if they wake up and get better wait staff.

Amazing steak, with perfectly matched, decent priced wine and then 2 cheeses to finish off with. The service was fantastic. Relaxed and unpretentious. Will be back

Nice decor, overpriced underwhelming food. I want to like this place. The decor is really nice and it has a good vibe. The food was just awful and almost inedible. I had the pork collar. I tried some of my dining companions steak and it was decent, but it's really just average pub food at a high price.

Mostly excellent. Really good food, great décor, loved the open fire. Nicely priced and excellent wine list - but why $20 a glass for a glass of fairly ordinary champers (avoiding the cheaper prosecco). That was a disappointment especially as we (two of us) were celebrating a birthday. Great complimentary bread (as it should be everywhere), and we were not charged for extra (much needed for the great sauce on the mains), and that's appreciated. Service was friendly, but a little distant - bit hard to raise smile on the men, the woman was easier to engage with.

Have been twice and both times have been excellent. The steak w/ chips are a standout! Great wine selection and really relaxed, informal but friendly service.

Dissapointing food today. Such a pity as lovely service.

Delightful!. Warm & inviting. The atmosphere is really cosy & relaxed, with lovely low lighting & a roaring log fire & because its upstairs there are no draughty door ways or bussle. A perfect hide away, what more could you want for on a rainy, cold sunday afternoon! The staff are friendly & attentive. The food is tradional comfort food with a modern twist & there is delicious wine by the glass to accompany each meal. Perfect!

Oh my! Had the steak with thick cut chips and salad, L'Artison Rouge cheese, and almond and poached pear tart. <br/>Everything was perfect! Service was fantastic and the vibe was prime! <br/>Loved that there was an outside smoking area as well. <br/>Thank you so much you guys were phenomenal

I came here for a bday dinner and I would not recommend for a large group. We had the set menu and whilst the food was nice, the serving of the dishes was awful. We had a table of 10 and for entrée we received one plate of each tasting for the whole table. ie 1 terrine platter with 2 slices of terrine and 4 pieces of bread for 10 people! 1 small plate of beef cheek for 10 people! WTF? <br/>It makes dinner unnecessarily akward. Oh did I take too much? is there enough for the 7th person? Forget it if you are the 10th!!! The food was actually tasty and would consider returning with one other person only..

I live in Torquay and love visiting Melbourne for it's restaurants. Since I went to Neighbourhood Wines for my birthday in Feb I can't go anywhere else, the joint is way too good!

One of the few truly smoke free venues in Melbourne. Bliss!!

Up There!. NH is amazing - the atmosphere, staff, and fellow patrons are all friendly and there to have a good time. The drinks list is amazing, and our wonderful waiter helped us select some wines that went with our dishes. We had Oysters which were superb, and I had the plate with terrine which was hearty, and full of flavour. I will definitely be back here, and cannot wait to try more of their wine selections!

Yum and Fun. Great atmosphere, cool North side casual service but attentive enough, food was lovely, I would have preferred goats cheese to ricotta with the mushroom entree but was still yummy! Snapper for main was tasty and cooked to perfection. Great wine list, the Pinot by the glass wanted me to stay there and drink it all night but could not. Good vibe, good food, good service, nothing to fault.

What a fab place! We sat close to the fire. Lovely ambience and the waitress was really helpful and friendly. I had the snapper and it was divine. Highly recommend.

Fantastic spot. NW is such a great spot. Its wine list is excellent, the food is superb, the staff are cool, knowledgeable and fun. Go there!

Really coming into it's own.. I've been eating here about once every couple of months since it first opened, so obviously, I'm into it... But as with all new ventures its all the fine tuning to the space, service, food, menu, wine, music etc over the days and months after it opens that make a venue a great place to come to, and the past two visits here have been awesome. The vibe, food and booze is bang on the money. Really solid, tasty, rustic European food and a wine list that delivers at many price points, there is quality for the punters and loads to sink your teeth into if your a hard-out wine nerd. I'd recommend this place to anyone - but don't come expecting fine dining, it's a casual vibe, so relax and settle in. <br/>Oh yeah and the new cocktail bar in the pool room just adds more fuel to the fire!

Just a flawless experience. Everything from the food, wine, music, service was simply perfect. We just can't wait to go back, such a great place. Once we finished having our lunch we both turned to each other and said '10 out of 10'. Thank you well done NW

Went for a work Christmas dinner. The food was excellent and the wine was great, but the standout was the service. The waiter, who was relatively young, was extremely knowledgable about all the wines (and was happy to recommend the cheaper ones on the list), and was very helpful and funny without ever being overbearing.<br/>Best service I've had for years! Highly recommended.

Incompetent. I've eaten here three times recently and, despite priceness, the food has been really good.<br/>Last week's dining experience marked a turn for the worse, unfortunately.<br/>Why? The kitchen got hammered at 8:15pm on a Saturday night and couldn't cope. Having everyone come in at the same time on a Saturday night is par for the course for good restaurants in Melbourne. But Neighbourhood Wine flipped out a little, and got quite defensive.<br/>It took over 1:5 hours to get bread on the table. They also charged us for entrees we didn't order. When I queried this, instead of giving these to us for free (which would have been reasonable, I think, considering it took 2 hours to get mains on the table), they reluctantly gave us the entrees at a 50% discount.<br/>Embarrassing, and unpleasant. A real shame. We won't be going back.

First time tonight. Had some very good wines (maybe just a bit pricey). Really liked the cheese platter. Highlight was the bavette that was perfectly cooked and came with delicious fat chips (best we've had in a long time). We'll be back!

Great Food & Atmosphere. I found this gem hidden off Nicholson st in Fitzroy North about 2 months ago and have been back 3 times since. The wine list is top notch, with reds and whites from every corner of the globe to complement the fantastic (and reasonably priced) food. The beef cheeks are amazing, while its hard to pass up on rabbit pie or the terrine. if you are lucky enough to be there on a day oysters are available, you wont be disappointed. Definitely one of my favourite restaurants in the area!

As this is our neighbourhood local, we have tried this place a few times. We really wanted to like this venue because of proximity and the decor/story, however it has progressively gone down hill since it opened. Poor service, mediocre food(at best) overpriced. It is essentially your local pub standards in service and food, but charging double the price. I would recommend avoiding, especially as around this area you r spoilt for choice, and there is nothing worse than walking out of a restaurant thinking u just paid a bunch of money for a below average experience.

Melbourne loves a secret, and a good mafia backstory. Apparently this joint has both! Decor looks like the best of Mokbels Heyday meets trendy 70s Scandinavia. We had the steak w peppercorn butter and pork belly w fennel salad and lentils. The steak was good, well cooked, fat cut chips were yum. Pork belly was not good. Tough, chewy, a bit disappointing when it should melt in mouth. The lentils were bland, salad was inoffensive. Worth a go.

Fantastic local. We absolutely loved the food at Neighbourhood Wine, everything was just delicious.. Service was great & very helpful about wine choice. Will return fortnightly I'd imagine. 10/10

Neighbourhood Wine was absolutely fantastic! Great food and matching wines to accompany my cooked to perfection steak. The service was exceptional and of a very high standard. The open fire place, music & beautiful food and wine made our experience very memorable. We drove to neighbourhood wine from Port Melbourne & would come back again & again!

Fantastic food and wine! Will be returning soon!. Went to this place for the first time the other night without knowing too much about it. Walked up the stairs to find a beautiful restaurant that was buzzing with life and laughter. We later were told by the wait staff that the premise was actually once an illegal underground casino! We were seated by a lovely burning fireplace and started off with some Pinot recommended from the staff that was fantastic. Entrees and mains were filling and delicious as the great wine continued to flow. Everything seemed to come together here to ensure a great night out. Will be coming back again very soon!
Helen
I love this bar! Been twice in the last month, both times on a Sunday, both times we had great food, friendly service and perfectly recommended wines. Will probably be back again very soon with friends I think! Can't recommend it anymore than I have already! Well done guys!
Esther
Really liked the originality of the fit out, records and stunning bar but our service was inconsistent and our food was terrible, my ribs were burnt and dry or full off fat and no meat, with a oily condiment. The salads were small and we left very disappointed because we were really excited to have a new wine bar in north Fitzroy.
Bobsie
Love the service. my only criticism is the winelist..it needs to have more moderately priced wine.

Great food, great service. Really great atmosphere on the Thursday night that I went there for dinner. The food was fantastic and the staff were super friendly. Good music too. Will definitely be going back.

More interested in pack em in than customer service asked to move twice as larger parties came in and progressively service got worse. <br/>It promised so much when we came in really warm welcome attentive staff who disappear once large party come in<br/>Really disappointing poor poor service

Great atmosphere + food + wine. Good value, filling food, great wine list and a pretty awesome venue. <br/><br/>Definitely going back for more. One of my new favourite places.

Greatly recommended. Terrific addition to the 'Neighbourhood' of Fitzroy/Northside. Classic wooden setting gives a homly vibe as does the caring service. Had the slow roasted lamb which was very tender with seemingly French influence. Rhubarb pie for dessert with a dessert wine, magnificent third course and well worth breaking the diet for. Overall a top night and will be back sooner rather than later with great value prices.

Best of both worlds. Wooden bar, soft lighting, record player, discerning drinks list, great food, really well priced. This place has the comfort of a cosy pub but with high end restaurant details. Mussels were served with a delicious creamy sauce, steak was cooked to perfection. It seems like they have great ingredients without the wankiness of some other restaurants or 'gastro pubs'. <br/>The setting is rad. Alphonse Gangitano used to run an underground casino there. Highly recommended. It's brand new and I feel like it's going to take off.
