Review Supermaxi - North Fitzroy

Hannah Muirhead
Cool minimalist, open decor. Super friendly and helpful staff. Great pizzas and starters. Top-notch limoncello. Overall good vibes and excellent eating.
Tas Gray
Food here is great and the staff are equally good. A local gem.

I’ve been going to this restaurant for the past 6 years and brought many friends here but after last night experience I am considering whether I’ll ever go back. I received such a rude and unprofessional comment from the owner of the place, someone in the hospital industry (that by definition should be hospitable, welcoming). When it was time to pay the bill, because I had a small dinner, the owner commented that I could have had that dinner at home, and didn’t need to go out for it. I was very astonished by such an unprofessional comment - after several years of being their customer, and choosing to them (and giving them my money) over other places, I couldn’t believe such an unwelcoming remark. It also happened that Pescatora pizza I ordered wasn’t particularly good and the place was incredibly noise. So perhaps all signs to be dining and bringing friends to another restaurant in the future.

If you aren’t popping in here on a Tuesday night for the great service and even better food, you should be. In fact don’t. I want this place all to ourselves. Bellissimo!

I had friends over my place for dinner. I picked up my order, it was fresh and tasty. A perfect way to enjoy a Saturday night a home. 100% only getting pizza from here!

We felt unwelcome when we entered as we were dressed semi casual (jeans and jacket). The asian guy at the bar said we shouldn’t be wearing hats indoors and was aggressive about it, asking us why we thought it was acceptable. I run a restaurant and it has never been an issue for any of my customers to wear hats inside or dress in a certain way.

Don’t let the calm exterior lull you into a false sense of security. Upon entering Supermaxi you’re greeted by a hive of activity with corks popping, people laughing and good times being had by all. I had a place at the bar...would thoroughly recommend as it lets you survey the action. Cocktails are on point...try Giovanni’s dirty martini with special gin. It was a cracker as is the service. The staff are exceptional and breeze through service in an engaging and effortless way. I wanted everything on the menu, but the veal caught my eye and I’m a traditionalist with its preparation. I wasn’t disappointed. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. It was a wonderful first evening back in Melbourne after many years and didn’t disappoint.

Came to Supermaxi for dinner with friends and had a beautiful meal. Hard to fault really! The only thing that could have been better is the service as it was sometimes hard to get the waiters attention! To start we had the crumbed mozzarella with olive tapenade which was super delish. For mains we couldn’t decide between pizza and pasta so we got both! The pizza and pasta dishes were both excellent! However, the real highlight of the meal was dessert! The desserts all sounded so good so we got the tiramisu, the chocolate panna cotta with raspberry sorbet, the pavlova roulade with berries, and the fried custard with ice cream. Whilst they were all divine, our favourites were the pavlova and fried custard. Would definitely recommend Supermaxi to people looking to have a relaxed but memorable dinner with delightful food and wine!

Staff were warm friendly and very helpful, the pizza did not live up to the hype unfortunately and left disappointed for my treat meal. There is much better pizza in Melbourne. The service, staff and vibe were lovely.

Lovely restaurant and decor. Attentive staff. The pizza and pasta cannot be faulted. Had a lovely dinner here and would recommend if you are in the area!

I have been here a few times as local to me. Last night my food was disappointing. I ordered fish of the day - Pan fried John Dory fillets. Plenty of them but way over-cooked and dry. It came with a salad niçois, fresh enough but anchovies did not taste good with John Dory. We shared an entré of Polpette melanzane - tasty but very plain. My partners pizza was ok. Service efficient and brusque- we arrived at 7.00 and were out by 8.00. Given it was our wedding anniversary would have liked a bit more space to make a night of it. We won’t return.

Wonderful food, great service, lovely wine, can’t recommend this restaurant enough. Great for groups or a special family dinner. Hope to get back there soon

The staff here are so friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere of this place is clean and professional, yet small and cozy. The food is very good with all flavours working all together, and the ingredients are obviously good quality.
FoodN
Puttanesca pizza had a nice base with nice flavours. Fish was cooked well but veggies underneath were quite oily. The prawn spaghetti was tasty and a decent size. Simple food cooked well <br/>

Pizza to die for!!!<br/>I really enjoyed this venue it was nice to have a pizza that I could really sink my teeth into without being too fancy and over the top<br/>The staff here are very welcoming and friendly<br/>Good vibe

My first time at this restaurant with friends who had been coming here for years. I was a little disappointed by the stark cold modern decor as I entered but the chilliness soon dissolved when we were warmly greeted by the host Giovanni. He shook my hand and asked my name. Throughout the evening I was addressed by my name, which impressed me. I was guided through the menu by my friends who were familiar with it. We shared a number of tasty treats as entrees. Deep fried eggplant 'polpette', octopus salad and a tuna pizza with a divine crust. For mains we chose one of their popular staples - 'Cotoletta' - a whopping crunchy crumbed veal cutlet cooked to pink perfection, served with a rustic coleslaw dressed with lemon juice & olive oil. We also tried a special of braised goat that melted in the mouth but lacked seasoning & flavour, served with bland steamed potatoes & broccolini. A bit of a miss I am afraid compared to the veal...Feeling brave, I opted for a dessert of fried custard served with vanilla ice-cream & honey. It hit the mark - sweet & rich if not a tad oily but enjoyable none the less. <br/>Service was excellent and our young waiter had an authentic Italian accent. (Loved the way he pronounced "Us-para-goos" for asparagus!) The room was noisy due to full large tables of birthday diners but not too unbearable as their mirth was rather infectious. Overall a great night, good homestyle Italian cuisine and friendly atmosphere. Will definitely return.

I've dined/had takeaway numerous times now at Supermaxi and the service and quality of food has been consistently fantastic. Best pizzas I've had to date.
RLK
Not fine dining or an innovative fusion food, but good quality traditional Italian food. Everything we ate was delicious, service was excellent, atmosphere relaxed but classy. Good choice for a nice meal out.
Bec C
The food was well below average on our visit. Most of the food was bland and you can get better pizzas almost anywhere else.<br/>The service was good.
Elliot Giakalis
Quality, every time. Pizzas are my go to but some of the specials sound too good to not try. Great friendly staff round out a great food experience.
Heather Miers
The service is the best I've had in ages ! Lovely authentic Italian food and very good wine list. Highly recommended. Oh and the pizzas are excellent too.
Simon Lazenby
I'd almost given up finding a Melbourne venue that makes authentic tasty pizza & then I found Supermaxi team. Very hospitable and friendly team and food that backs the reputation. Interesting range of wine, the Oregon Pinot was delicious. A wonderful experience, this unfussy Fitzroy destination is a Melbourne gem.

Service dreadfully slow, we waited over an hour between courses and the meals for the four of us did not arrive together. We wont be back. Used to be good, menu has not really changed for some time.<br/><br/><br/>

I really think Supermaxi could edge Primo out of my No 1 spot for Best Pizza in Town but not quite because I keep going back to Primo and it never disappoints. Having said that,  the Napolitano was so deliciously juicy without being sloppy- no floppy centre thank goodness. Love the hand pulled oblong shape. No extra seasoning was needed as it was just perfect. <br/><br/>However, on the second visit the pizza showed it's flaws. While it was hot, it was good but as it cooled down the pastry became dry and chewy. The dough seemed to lack air; the crust edge was flat. There were only four olives (halved) and 4 anchovies, which for a very large expanse of Napoletana, is quite miserly. <br/><br/>On our first visit, bar drinks were very reasonably priced. Love the minimalist all white room. Deep fried custard is not something that appeals to me- that was until I tried it!
AnotherDave
Really good pizza, especially the Zucchini one. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Been several times, food has been great on each occasion. <br/><br/>Update: had to improve the rating to 5.<br/>Brilliant pizza.
Bonsaisly
I had the anchovies and olives as a starter to share which was divine, and could have easily had more. For a main I had a special at the time. Overall everyone enjoyed their meals and the dessert we had at the end was spectacular (this coming from someone who will more often than not skip sweets). Giving the restaurant a 3 overall however due to the poor service. Almost anyone was spoken to rudely and anything we asked was simply too hard. I would probably give this place another go but would be hesitant doing so.

BEWARE if you are planning a function here.<br/><br/>I'd love to give this restaurant a good review. The food is quite good. <br/><br/>HOWEVER...<br/><br/>I went to a friends birthday here recently and obviously there was a discussion with staff prior to the date regarding costs. The budget was $3k. The friend was told it would be surprising if it got past 2k (I won't go into detail other than to say a menu was chosen, there was a head count given). There were supposed to be limits to the alcohol provisions which were discussed with the staff.<br/><br/>Come to the end of the night - my friend goes to<br/>pay the bill. <br/>$4,500.00.<br/><br/>The owner joked with her saying 'she was right', regarding the bill possibly being higher. They disregarded all instructions to cease serving certain bottles of alcohol and as a result, the bill was more than double what was previously estimated.<br/><br/>I won't be going back, and neither will a lot of us who now know about this. It spoiled what was supposed to be a lovely evening celebrating not only a birthday but some other special events.<br/><br/><br/><br/>

Heard good comments and was recommended this place. Glad we booked early. Switched on, friendly service. I can eat everything on the menu here. Well cooked italian fare. Calamari nice but pricy for entree, melanzane fritters were delish. Fussy daughter gave the gnocchi the thumbs up. The funghi pizza was top notch. Highly recommend.

Have wanted to go here for a while, it always makes "best of" lists. I REALLY wonder how these lists get made, as there's some shenanigans goin on! Was such a let down. The pizza toppings were fine and tasty. The pizza bases were rock hard but thin (I don't even know how you could make a thin base that hard). Both of us sawed at our pizzas but could barely cut all the way through. In the end it was too much work and we just scraped the toppings off and ate those. I explained to the waitress why she was taking two bare pizza bases back to the kitchen, then she comes back and says "it was your blunt knife". Please! don't insult our intelligence. Two knives which are steel, were no match for this flour/water/concrete base, even when putting so much effort into it that the table was rocking. We actually laughed and thought, they can't be serious serving up this. So... No discount, no comp coffee, nothing offered. We will not return. Wouldn't have left a review but being told it was the blunt knife rather than the sub par base, pissed us off.

Lover little spot for quick pizza. Staff nice and quality of food is real good. Usually a few good specials and nice drinks too. Quality local place.

There is so much to love about this place ..... Italian food, just like home - great wait staff that know how to make you feel like you are at visiting somewhere familiar (without going over the top). Simple menu and really good food. We popped in Friday night for a quick bite and our meals really hit the spot. Complimentary lupini, lovely bread and good quality olive oil and two pasta dishes as good as my mums! (He had the gnocchi with beef and pork ragu and I had the house made spaghetti with a Napoli sauce - Perfect. We can't wait to go back. <br/>I think this place is really versatile, you could come here for a special occasion dinner or pop in (as we did) for a casual pizza or pasta. My only slightly minor issue is that the cheapest wine by the glass is $14, whereas you could get a beer for $7.50. If they could add a choice in wine by the glass that compares to beer prices, this place would have scored a 5/5!!!!!

Yummy Italian food. Love having this place just down the road from me. I normally go for their meat specials of the day as it has never let me down. A must no matter how full you are is the fried custard. Sometimes I just drop in for a coffee and this amazing mouthwatering desert. I can't stress enough how good it is.
Caffiend
Terrazzo floors, complimentary lupini and lots of wait staff to practise your Italiano on - are we at Nonna's house?<br/><br/>The pizzas here are hand-stretched, wood-fired goodness. I haven't tried anything from the secondi menu but the veal cottoletta on the bone looks like a renaissance masterpiece.<br/><br/>Try. The. Fried. Custard. BELLISSIMO!

Best gluten free pizza I have found in Melbourne!<br/>Home made gluten free pizza bases, thin and light and taste amazing. <br/>The wine list was a little disappointing, very little to choose from and no Shiraz or Sav Blanc by the glass, but overall if you're in the mood for pizza I would definitely be headed here for a quality meal.

Came down for dinner with family. The waitress was great and explained the specials in detail. I went with her recommendation of pan fried snapper and it was lovely. My husband and brother in law had pizzas which were very tasty. The linguine with broad beans was good too
Two And A Half Beans
Have been here many times for dinner and never walk out disappointed. Service, food and drinks all 10/10. Pizza's are up there with the best and the place itself just has a good feel about it.
Stephen Raphael
It's unassuming exterior matches the interior in many ways but is refreshing at the same time. <br/><br/>This place isn't trying to be pretentious or extend itself to a crowd of over judgmental foodies, it's real food, cooked well and with a soul and that's what it's trying to be and that's all. <br/><br/>Good service, food and quality details is supermaxi and in a day and age where so much style of substance is usually enjoyed, it's refreshing to get good service, a good pizza, pasta, entree or desert and get it every time. <br/><br/>My major issue, well, it's just a shame the coffee to end is so very disappointing. <br/><br/>I know, I know, but at the end of this kind of traditional Italian meal, a short black or macchiato that is smooth, woody and with a hint caramel like most in Rome would have simply fired off the cannon of complete joy. <br/><br/>The cost is relative and in today's society it's on par with most, so there isn't any agreement for me with reviews that claim this place is expensive, but there is room for a little more polish or sex appeal in Italian flair, but that's just me being very picky. <br/><br/>Overall 4/5 for food, service and atmosphere, a score well and truly deserved.
Thomas
Supermaxi consistently performs. Not just pizza great Italian food and friendly service. Family friendly too. 140 characters required by Zomato silly.
The Penguin
The only good thing about this place is the pizza. Which was delicious. We were greeted as we entered by a lovely gent behind the bar, he was friendly and gracious and if only he had looked after us for the rest of the night, we would have enjoyed it. The waiter we had was arrogant, condescending and intrusive. If you get here and you have a bald waiter with a lisp, ask for someone else because he will ruin your night. He oversold us too much food and everything he suggested was deep fried after we asked for fresh dishes. He made us feel like we were idiots and was constantly leaning over us at the table. The pasta he suggested was plain and I have had better pasta from cans. I will never go back.
Rob Y
The Melbourne food scene is brutal. While I foresee no problems with Supermaxi’s future, which in its current iteration, is the perfect local pizza bar; but for me, and this blog as a whole, comes down to whether I’d travel across town for their delicious, but not world shattering pizzas.

Amazing service and food! 12 out of 10!!!! <br/><br/>Absolutely love this place- it's atmosphere is perfect for just catching up with good friends and knowing the food and service is guaranteed to make it the best night out. All the staff there are so helpful and go out of their way to make sure you are looked after. Pizza is just like you have in Napoli and the slow cooked lamb so tender! Complete  with hazelnut nougat dessert, it was heavenly! Highly recommended! keep up the good work Rita, Lisa, Alfie and of course, Marco!!!
Vince Loverso
Great find, right up my alley. Definitely coming back throughly enjoyed cuisine
Kate
Worst service ever. We made a booking specifically for a table (not bar seat) and arrived only to be made to wait while they sat other people who walked in then eventually told us there were only bar seats. They were really rude. Honestly don't waste your time!
Eunkovich
Rude waiter!. The short bald waiter is awful and impatient, I felt like I was dining at shanghai village where the staff try to shoo you out as fast as possible. <br/><br/>We ordered the mushroom pizza to share between three people for our starter, he seemed puzzled by the fact that we only wanted one pizza to start with. 2mins after taking our order for the starter (still undecided on mains) he came and tried to take away our menus as though we were only just going to order ONE pizza between three people. Um, hello?!? <br/><br/>Thank god the food was actually good.<br/><br/>Get a new job short bald man.
Darrenjf
Never go there again. Super crappy.<br/>Noisy, Rude cocky italian waiter<br/>Over priced, limited menu<br/>Waited almost 1 hour for our mains<br/>Check your BILL..........other Item(s) were put onto our account....
Jay Glaisyer
Great. Love the semifredo and the Sicilian pizza great food nice staff highly recommend it.
Gwen Peters
Delicious pizza, Italian style. The other mains are lovely also. Am trying to work my way through the menu
Ben Lee Kong
The special antipasti featured beautiful fresh mozzarella as the star and it was exquisite. The Maxi pizza was delicious as ever, the combination of radiccio and pancetta never getting old, especially when on such a perfectly formed base. To finish we had the fried custard which sounds unusual but is a signature and for good reason. The texture of the thick custard is set off with the fried exterior and the ice cream adds some moisture.

It might be in an old bank, but there’s nothing staid about the Saint. Backpackers dress up, professionals dress down and bright young things wear little more than fake tans. Make no mistake: the Saint is all about partying. Their website might spruik relaxed afternoon drinks in the Asian-inspired courtyard, but this is a little difficult given the opening hours. Instead use the cool open space as time-out from two levels of pumping tunes, with weekend house music upstairs and DJs downstairs.<br/>

Strange name for an Italian restaurant but that is exactly what Supermaxi is! Located in St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North the interior is modern dominated by a large centre bar. The lighting is quite dim so sadly a lot of my photos did not work. We shared a couple of entrees including these gorgeous stuffed olives. We weren't expecting them to be deep fried but they were crunchy and salty, very moreish and lovely with our crisp sauvignon blanc.<br/>
Temasek68
The tomato sauce used for the base is Supermaxi's secret weapon. There must be crack in it somewhere because it is trully addictive.
Sofia Levin
The most important thing you need to know about Italian local Supermaxi is this: whatever you do, order the deep-fried custard, a firm block of heaven encased in golden crumbs, drizzled with honey and paired with vanilla bean ice cream.
Essjayeff
Entrees were delicious, the Pizza was OK, not quite cooked through in the crust.
Frankee
Great food, pizza's were exceptional.. Went there for a celebration and loved it. The pizzas were delicious and definitely better than 400 Gradi. Ordered starters and sides and a drink and the cost for 4 was very reasonable. Will return soon and will bring more friends.

The food was lovely on the night we visited - perfectly cooked and nice, simple flavours. Service on the other hand was like nothing I've ever experienced in a restaurant in Melbourne. The waiter treated my parents and I like fresh off the boat Asians, complete with mocking my mum's accent, speaking to us extra slow so we understood and then kow towing when he presented the bill. I was seething but luckily my parents talked me out if making a scene. The other wait staff were great though. Seriously, in this day and age and in this city, a pantomime like that really put me off and I will definitely not be back just for that reason.
Jess
As it was my first time here with my partner I wasn't sure what to expect. We were greeted by a friendly waiter and seated us right away. The restaurant is modern with perfect mood lighting, background music, a beautiful ambiance all round. <br/>We were served by the waiter Alfie, who was an absolute delight throughout the entire night, his expertise were extremely helpful, from teaming our entrees together to selecting a superb Italian white wine to compliment our meal choice.<br/> Our entrees from the specials of the day, olives, basil, buffalo mozzarella, prosciutto were simply devine, teamed with traditional bread and olive oil, I recommend anything on the menu with these fresh ingredients. <br/>For our mains we shared two pizzas, authentic thin crisp Bianca based pizza with a side of rocket and parmigiano salad to which I could not fault.<br/>To complete the night we shared a desert that was absolutely magnificent. <br/> Overall a beautiful dining experience, moderately priced, friendly service and exquisite food. <br/>Will DEFINITELY be returning for many years to come, new favourite! :)
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
I love this place! So glad it's just around the corner from work, we're going to work through all the pizzas on the menu. Thin and crispy, to perfection. Beats 400 Gradi by service, pricing, efficiency, comfort and quality of traditional pizzas. Their simple homemade spaghetti was delish and I have a craving for it every time someone mentions pasta. These guys do simple Italian exceptionally well.
Foodboy
Great food, amazing service from Marco & incredible dessert. Will come back.
Hannah
What about a smile?. Loved the food but the waiting staff need some serious training in how to be pleasant to their customers. Twice I felt I was being reprimanded. There are many Italian restaurants with charming waiters - these guys need to lighten up!
Carla Osinski
Too noisy. I've eaten twice here now and while the food is delicious the noise both times was overwhelming. A table of three and we were yelling at each other without much luck of being heard. I'm not coming back because of this, they need some carpet on the floor or something to buffer the noise.
Lauren Rizzi
It was great. I had heard the staff were rude and pretentious but our waiter was lovely and very helpful. We shared pizzas and they were all delicious. A terrific experience.
Danielle Wilson
WOW!! Stopped by late on Saturday night to grab a pizza on our way I to the city and waited at the bar for our take away... While waiting we were promptly served and presented with one of the best damn vodka, lime and sodas ever. After seeing what others in the restaurant were enjoying we decided to stay and have our pizza there. One bite in and we'd scrapped our entire Saturday night plans in order to continue our Supermaxi experience. We asked for the menu and we're told the specials and started again!! <br/><br/>We ordered the mozzarella which was a seasonal special and boy oh boy was it special!! The best fresh mozzarella I've had , accompanied by some of the best cured meat to touch my lips. Weren't disappointed at all!! We ordered another round of drinks and the puttanesca pizza and I'm still (two days later!) salivating at the thought of the taste! Ordered the panna cotta to take home and our bill come to just over $100. Such a great dining experience. The service was incredible. I'd HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the place to everyone interested in good Italian and exceptional service alongside kick ass drinks.

Not so super. Group of four of us dined at Supermaxi on a Saturday evening early September. The restaurant was full, was very noisy and conversation was difficult. But at least this enhanced the ambience, for the monochrome decor is rather bland. The largely Italian wine list offers reasonable choice, but there is no indication of each wine's style or vintage. Entrees arrived quickly but then there was a one-hour wait for mains. That is unacceptable. Diners at an adjacent table suffered a similar delay. Our waiter, who was warm and professional throughout the evening, was apologetic. But the main courses, including fish, pasta and pizza, were all excellent. Then there was a 40-minute wait for dessert. The kitchen was clearly not coping. Coffees arrived 15 minutes after dessert. The long black was little larger than an espresso, and the espresso was similarly challenged in a quantitative sense. We had planned to spend no more than two hours at Supermaxi but the delays between courses stretched this to three. It spoilt our evening. I would guess that the restaurant was overbooked by perhaps a dozen. Good for short-term revenue, but certainly doesn't encourage repeat business.

Pizza head. Absolulty beautiful experience lost for words how good these guys are...:):):)

Pizza how pizza should be. Wow. Giovanni, Rita and staff know how to make you feel good. Accommodating friendly and very attentive. Now the food...Supermaxi means super good! The battered cauliflower for entree is like nothing I have had before. The batter was lighter than any tempura that I have had and just folded in the mouth. My daughter had the Veal and it melted in the mouth. I had the pizza special of the night, 3 meats basil and Mozzarella. Never have I been intertwined with my food like this. So simple yet so damn good. Dessert was a similar experience. Breaded pan fried custard with vanilla bean ice cream, the custard had a citrus tone to it that made me think of my Nonna. The choc Panna cotta was amazing also. All in all I will be back, but this time with the rest of my family, as they also do Gluten free pizza and pasta that will agree with my wife.
Diner62
Great dining experience. Wonderful, attentive service, outstanding food - simple, using very good ingredients with great marrying flavours. Interesting wine list - a good mix of local and European wines suitable to food being served at reasonable prices.<br/>Very recommendable.
Colin
You WANT a tip !!. Dined here on the 19/7/14, the food is of good quality and the servings are generous. The place was packed and the wine is okay.<br/>A major disappointment when it came time to pay on card. The request from the waiting staff..."..if you want to leave a tip press this button, if you dont press this button". I then looked at the visa machine to see the text.......press o.k. To tip........you gotta be kidding !!!!<br/>I dine out ten times a year always pay by card and have never been met by this before, the lowlight of the evening

Supermaxi is yum yum!!! It's warm, hearty, beautiful food in a funky and modern setting, yet not at all pretentious. The crumbed olives are the bomb! It's our 'go to' restaurant for beautiful food every time. Only thing that lacks is the coffee.
Teresa Basile
Disappointed. Supermaxi came recommended from friend who said it was great. Overall the food was very good. However the service was poor. We asked for some small plates to use for our bread and entrees and the waitress said "no" . What?! The service was a let down. Won't go back.
Chris Gerard
Check your change. Never had this happen at a restaurant before! Bill was $211, put $220 on the plate and $3 in change came back.<br/><br/>Pity really as the food was pretty good and despite the outrageous corkage, the prices on the wine list were okay.<br/><br/><br/>-----11 Jul, 2014-----<br/><br/>Corkage charge is outragous. Seriously, $20 for corkage. With hundreds of restaurants in Melbourne, why put up such a barrier for customers?
Rennie
Update Oct-18, back again as a group of six and the restaurant is still exceptionally clean and well ordered. Staff are very friendly and quick to serve and please customers. It's fairly dimly lit and the menu is in a very small font making it very difficult for many to read. Did I mention the staff are very friendly? The menu is not large but they're are many dishes to choose from and the staff are willing to help you select starters to share. The pizzas are great! My criticism is that the menu has not changed on a long time and needs to have something new injected as I'm running out of things to try!<br/>Jul-2014<br/>The food is still great... but service is starting to slip. We had a booking for seven for three weeks, we arrived on time and obviously something went wrong as they had the booking but clearly not the table. We were then seated at the table next to the front door that on a cold Melbourne spent most of its time open and at one point we had customers literally standing between our chairs!! This was really disappointing and we were eventually moved to another table. So we had a really bad start but the food really made up for it and we did end up leaving on a positive. We've noticed that over the last couple visits the quality of service has declined with us, and others through conversations, to a point that we'll remove this restaurant from our favourites list. They need to pay more attention to their front of house activities before more negativity is generated.
Anne
Owner arrogant and full of his own importance. Food tasty but most dishes were oily. Too much deep fried food on menu. Service average and no low far milk options for coffee. Over priced for what it is. Will neither return nor recommend.
Laclem
As good as it gets for pizza. Have dined here about 4 times over the last 2-3 years. The pizza is exceptional. Really can't fault it. Or any of the other food. Clearly, a lot of care and pride taken in the food. Quality across the board. Great wine list. Yes, it is a tad expensive overall but it's worth it for really top quality food, IMO. Service is fine. Can get a bit rowdy, as other reviewers have noted, due to the room being all hard surfaces. Not a huge issue. I look forward to going here again sometime soon.<br/><br/><br/>-----23 Jun, 2014-----<br/><br/>Had another great dinner here last weekend. We had the stuffed olives and polpette melanzane followed by a couple of pizzas and the radicchio salad. All great. Especially love the pizza here - probably go as far as to say the best pizza in Melbourne. The Boscaiola with fresh porcini is fantastic. Only negative is it's a tad exy, but worth it for quality food.
Stefanie
Amazing pizza. Service was lovely

Great Food and Service. Supermaxi is a sensation. The food is excellent, the staff are super friendly and attentive. The roast duck was great. The pizzas are a delight. Highly recommended and extremely fun!

Had the margherita here recently and it was very bland. Pizza was disappointing but service was excellent

I LOVE this place! Lovely staff who make sure you have a great time every time. Delious simple food that is fresh and tasty. Highly recommend.
Chiara
Great food and fantastic service, keep up the good work guys!

We went with a large group and all just loved it, even my 15 month old. Great service accommodating and kind to the children making a special milkshake and bringing out a pizza in record time. The food was delicious too!
Sabrina Foenander
Putenesca pizza- amazing. Fish special was incredible. Probably the best fish dish I've ever had. The lamb was wonderful a also. Would go back for sure.
Laura
Don't judge a book by its cover. We live around the corner from Supermaxi and had walked past many a time thinking..."supermaxi, what kind of name is that? Is it a boat, a pad...?" But we shouldn't have waited so long.<br/><br/>DELICIOUS food and great service (attentive, but not overbearing), and relaxed ambience. I don't usually gush, but I loved the food, and I believe in rewarding hard work. Do your self a favour and get along to Supermaxi for some supermax flavoured food.
Tony
Great food, service and ambience, probably beat pizza in town. We also had seafood spedini (skews) on a bed of rice with eggplant, baby broccoli herbs absolutely beautiful, crumbed cottoleta ( veal cuttlet) with coleslaw was excellent. Highly recommended place to have a lovely dinnet

Went here for my brother's birthday, was very pleased. Excellent food and service. Will definitely come again :)

A Favourite!. My husband and I thoroughly enjoy the restaurant scene in Melbourne - what's not to love! But after 3 years of living here, we both agree that Supermaxi is at the top of our list of favourites. Not only because it's close to home, but because all of the food we've had there has been consistently excellent. Also, we have NEVER had poor service, ever - not even mediocre service! Exemplary is the word I'd use to describe it. We also enjoy the interesting and changing wine menu at Supermaxi, and always enjoy the recommendations of the staff. <br/><br/>This place is always full of locals, and that's no accident. Thanks, Supermaxi, for all the fantastic meals! See you soon!

Mozzarella & salami entree was superb. We'll be back.
Yummy
Favourite. When we're too lazy to cook and want to be sure to have a nice meal we always go to supermaxi. <br/>Food is always good, service efficient without being in your face. Our perfect local.

Supermaxi is consistently excellent. It's turned into our go-to birthday/out of town restaurant. The food is classic, the surroundings are modern but still feel like home and the service is top notch. Highly recommended.

Ciao Bello. Close your eyes, savour the aromas, listen to the hustle and bustle and you could be in a Roman trattoria in Trastevere. i genuinely love this place primarily because of its ambience. It has penache. It has presence. it has pizzas. The 3 ps...you can't go wrong. The service is warm and welcoming. The food tasty. I enjoyed the Special Pizza of the night followed by a filling cotoletta. My Father's Day dine out experience was enhanced by an aromatic Bannockburn Syrah. The fried lemon dessert was unusual in appearance but delicious in taste. I'll be back to this little corner of Italy

Lovely atmosphere & enjoyable meal. I came here with friends last week, who regularly eat out at this cozy little Italian restaurant. The atmosphere was pleasant and the staff very welcoming. The pizzas here really are the star dishes!! We shared the pizza special of the night which was a lovely blanca cheese pizza with truffle oil. For mains I ordered the meat ragu pasta which was really enjoyable. The veal cutlet with the coleslaw looked amazing also. I would definitely come here again with a group of friends for a Sunday afternoon lunch or a nice relaxing dinner.

Had dinner here last night and really enjoyed it. Their menu appears simple yet it is complex and appealing. Really enjoyed the binge with provolone and rape. My wife and our friends very much liked it as well. The only criticism is the wine list needs some wines that give more value for money.

Cant beat their margheritas. Supermaxi is our favourite pizzeria in town!!!! We have tried many many wood-fired pizza restaurants but always drool over the thought of going for a sneaky hand-shaped margherita here!!!! if you are vegetarian, you have to try the GTV with grated zucchini and chilli...my favourite! <br/>We were introduced to this restaurant by a foodie-friend and she is not wrong...the pizzas are great quality every time we come- they use the right amount of very fresh ingredients. Pizzas are very light and we always ask for them one at a time. The desserts are all delicious, and the coffees are very tempting. <br/>One thing i miss here is some great live music- it would really lift the atmosphere. The background music is nice but always turned down too low. <br/>Zero complaints here, I hope they keep coming up with cool specials.<br/>The waiters are always very attentive and professional, grazie mille for staying open late for us too. We will be back!
Latitudes
Just shared a takeaway pizza - it was fantastic. Great range of pizzas including several pizza bianca for those of us who prefer their pizzas without tomato
El Solitario
The comfort of an old friend.. Great host and great food. <br/>This is my "go to" place when I have family and visitors from interstate. <br/>Would highly recommend giving this place a try...
The Oracle
Famous for simple pizza. Was a warm night, parking was good, air con was even better<br/>service was good, and then we ordered, i will keep this short and sweet, <br/>we all tried a plethora of their avant gard pizzas and all passed the test, myself, i had a marggeritta and it was, beautiful<br/>prices a little high, but that does not stop the place from filling up<br/>see you soon super maxi<br/>a
Me
Delicious. Great pizzas, nice staff, love mozzarella chips

Fabulous evening, great good, wine and and the host Giovanni was extremely attentive. Love this place :-)

Super. Nice attentive service from the quiffed guy. <br/>Food came out quickly. Always good when you're with a child.<br/><br/>Cheers!

Terrible service. We've been here a couple of times and enjoyed the food. <br/><br/>HOWEVER, we went there this evening and the service was TERRIBLE. We had ordered a drink and were discussing the day when the waiter asked if we were ready to order. We had only just been given the menu and we were talking, so no, we weren't ready. About 5 minutes later the waiter came back again and looked me straight in the eye and told me to "Hurry up" with ordering. Most of the tables around us were empty at this stage and they weren't busy so there was no reason was this kind of behaviour. I have NEVER been told to hurry up and couldn't believe it. When I asked what he meant he responded very aggressively saying I had missed understood. I hadn't.<br/><br/>This was a terrible experience. I won't go back and won't recommend Supermaxi to annyone. Shame.

Best Italian food I've had outside of my Mum's cooking. It was like a posh Nonna made everything. Great service too, highly recommend!
Candy Bacon
HORRIBLE service.. Staff were a complete turnoff & decided to go elsewhere.
Kristin
Lovely restaurant with excellent food and good service. Great for groups. My favourite is the mozzarella chips with pesto, and the margherita pizza. The bases of their pizzas are crisp and tasty. I think they are 400 Gradi and that other place on Faraday Street, and they are better priced. One of my favourites. :-)
Natasha Simpson
Service lets the place down. Food is good but staff are not. Not worth the wait. Go to DOC in Carlton.
Crystal
The Squid ink pasta dish is to die for !!! And the pizzas are awesome tooo
Karma Clarke
Pizza crusts were very hard to cut through. Your hands really hurt by the end of the meal. Flavours were great though. Nice space too. But the place has airs about it that doesn't show through its food.
Eatdrinklove
Been to Supermaxi a couple times and I have been generally happy with my meal and service both times. Good food, nice wines & the place has a nice vibe.<br/>Antipasto are delicious! Mozzarella chips yum! Prosciutto is absolutely amazing- mouth watering! And the buffalo mozzarella just melts in your mouth! <br/>Pizzas are good- nice taste & flavours but perhaps a little dry. <br/>Biggest downfall I'd say is the $20 corkage to BYO! That's a bit far fetched & leaves you the only option of buying a bottle there (obviously their intention!)

Tuesday night and it is my birthday. Came with my mum and dad. Firstly the atmosphere is great, you don't feel lost in this restaurant and I love the dim lights - not too heavy on the eyes adds to the tranquil feeling. Secondly customer service OFF THE CHARTS, the staff are fun but not clutzy and knowledgable i.e. wine matching, they are happy and add to the hearty environment. Thirdly, and most importantly, the food. ALL of it was delicious, perfect Italian simple yet well combined flavours not overt and uncontrollably fancy. My stomach certainly appreciated it. Primi, secondi and dolci all delicious. I am always excited to come back here, you have won me over once again and I will return with others to share such a great evening. Fantastic way to end my birthday! Grazie tanti!!!

FOR PIZZA'S ONLY. Been here 3 times now and you can't go wrong with the pizza's (and small/appertizer dishes). Pasta's, on the other hand, always lack flavour, except for the squid ink one. Good wine selection though.<br/><br/><br/>-----29 Apr, 2013-----<br/><br/>Just OK. Seriously........ What is everyone talking about! <br/><br/>Yes - the place is tastefully decked out with the bar in the middle but it can get really noisy, and the food wasn't that great. <br/><br/>Apparently the arancini are the go (from other reviews) but they weren't available when we visited over the weekend!<br/><br/>We ordered a combination of pizzas and pastas, with entrees (the eggplant meatballs were the best) to start. Pastas came out first and the rest of us waited about 15mins longer for the pizzas! That's a worry!!<br/><br/>Some ordered the linguine and said it was lovely, however, the ragu pasta wasn't tasty as there wasn't enough ragu and therefore made it bland.<br/><br/>The pizzas - well the maxi was just OK, but the puttanesca I must say was delicious.<br/><br/>Desserts, on the other hand got the thumbs up. The pannacotta and semifreddo were amazing.<br/><br/>So give this place a go. Don't know if I'll go back though.

DEFINITE FAVE - DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR. This is by far one of the best dining experiences I've had - worldwide.. The gang at Supermaxi are super pro and friendly. Know their wines and food. And the food - it's so fresh and clean and super tasty!! Pizza is top notch. The arancini is a must try for entree - I could eat 2 serves for a main!<br/><br/>Supermaxi, if it isn't in the top 10 dining experiences in Melbourne, should be. Staff are awesome, food is fantastic, wines are wonderful.<br/><br/>Do yourself a favour and get in on this - but book to ensure a spot. Actually, if you rock up and are happy to wait, they'll find you a spot! So nice!!<br/><br/>Love this place with all my culinary heart! Thanks Supermaxi!!

Best Pizza in Melbourne. The pizza speaks for itself.
Miranda
Amazing. Last night a group of us dinned at Supermaxi for the first time, we left it to the manager to send us a selection of Menu items ranging from Entree`, main and Dessert, Well I have not enjoyed such a variety of dishes all from the same menu and all deliciously tasty and well presented dishes. And the wine selection over the top. If you enjoy Italian homecooked style meals then this is the place for you. Some of the 5star restaurants take note
Joe Pags
Italian. The figs are fantastic. Service is up and down. I feel like there is a lack of coordination between the staff. With having 4 different waiters attend the table throughout the dinner, maybe they are not allocated efficiently. all in all, a solid product.
Nick
Ordinary People. 10 minutes late, got serious attitude from owner and told that our table had been given to someone else! Im not sure what some people think, but to be greeted with a tantrum, if not a hissy fit from a grown man was about as amateurish as it gets. Oh, but there was another table.... if we wanted it. As you would expect, we walked but not without a few choice words not to be repeated here, were accommodated without notice at Marmalade & Soul and had a cracking meal with great service. There's $400 in someone else's till.
Jessica Rose
Great :). The pizza chef must be fresh off the boat because they are made the traditional way, that being that the pizzas aren't even round. I had a delicious meal and the pizza chef was the one who actually presented us with our meal! Also, we came into contact with a waitress and a waiter, both of them were ridiculously nice, knowledgeable and friendly when we inquired about the food.

Maxi pizza = MAXI Price! Charged $10 extra for mushrooms!<br/>We went to Supermaxi and ordered a maxi pizza ($20). We requested no radicchio but with porcini mushrooms. After a long deliberation with “the chef”, the waiter returned and told us that the chef was happy to accommodate our request. The chef and the main host asked on separate occasions “How’s the pizza” Not caring much about the person who was eating fish. I replied “the pizza is not bad thank you”. The pizza after all was a little undercooked in areas and over cooked in others, the sauce had no flavour and the base itself was bland. The snapper on the other hand was lovely and cooked and seasoned well but we were never asked our opinion of it. We asked for the bill and as the main host approached the table, he put his hands up in the air and said “its not my fault, I have to charge you extra. I mean, the porcini mushrooms are expensive and the chef, she is making me charge you extra. I’m sorry but its not my fault!” We requested that the waiter place the bill on the table so we could look at it. We were charge $30 for Maxi pizza... $20 for the pizza and $10 extra for mushrooms. The issue...<br/>1)If you are going to charge extra to the point of $10, tell us from the start.<br/>2)I understand that the place was not busy...but really? Is that a way to make up for your short falls?<br/>3)The chef packed the pizza with mushrooms you say. Ok sure, if you define “a lot of mushrooms” as six mushrooms!<br/>4) "Chef" I know that we offended you by telling you that the pizza was “not bad” but we were being honest. Don’t ask questions if you are not able to hear the reply<br/>5) "Host"...Own your stuff... As a host, you dictate what gets charged, not the chef. You obviously thought the charge was extortion too otherwise you would not have apologised so much.

Have been there twice and won't go back. Went once and service was poor. Thought I'd give it another go, as the food was lovely, however I was disappointed again with the service. I was with an older friend who was hard of hearing....and when she asked the waiter to repeat the specials, he rolled his eyes and criticised her. They were curt and abrupt....and we had to chase them for drinks. Food was lovely though, but I'd not waste my time when there is so much better service elsewhere
Yummyfood
The food was ok. Not amazing but not bad.<br/>It was very pricey and felt a little hot and crowded that night.
Amanda Ladominic
Supermaxi is super. Im Italian and have grown up with this sort of food all my life. the pasta here is very very good as are the pizzas. I had dinner last week and thought that my experience was tops. don't expect a big city night out this is a quality suburban restaurant and the cooking very southern Italian in my view. The winelist is sharp and well priced. try the really delicate linguini with prawns and alike and the Neapolitan pizza both excellent examples of how to execute great simple Italian fare
ThisIsWhatIThought.
Wow!!! Top service. Top atmosphere. Top food. Can't fault this place!! The most annoying thing over our 3 hrs sitting. (Family function. Lots of food) was the fact that an empty bottle was left on the table for 10min. The waiters are friendly and knowledgeable. The food variety on offer fits the theme of the restaurant. The cold meats and cheese are as perfect as the ones I have only ever seen in Rome. Do yourself a favour and check them out!!
TM
Inconsistent with food and service. Was really good a while back but seems to have gone downhill recently. Won't be back
Mikica
Ridiculous & Rude !. We asked for the gnocchi ragu take away. The person on the phone told us that they had run out of gnocchi but had another pasta, I replied we don't mind as long as the sauce is ragu nice and clear. "No problem it'll be ready in 40 mins" was the reply. We picked up our meals, took them home only to see he had given us bolognese. We all work in hospitality, so we understand mishaps occur in busy restaurants, but were confronted by a profusely rude and arrogant owner, who was the one who took our order, claiming that he was happy with what he'd given us & we should be satisfied. After trying time and time again to explain that it maybe fine food but it's not what we ordered (additionally the fact that we repeated twice we just wanted ragu) he began arguing with me, not even allowing me to get a word in edge ways. He was just a waste of my time and a waste of the 30 cent call connection fee. Plus the Bolognese was dry and burnt. <br/><br/>I give most places another go if all didn't go too well & I never write bad reviews but gees this bloke was just a down right twat. Rude and arrogant as anything. I would never give him my money & I obscure all my friends from going there. If you can't respect your customers you don't deserve their patronage.
Mattnut
Pizza was literally just cheese and a handful of mushrooms that covered about 70% of the base<br/>Cured meats entree was good though

The small bowl of beans to nibble on as a starter was tasteless and unpleasant, not to mention it was accompanied by another small bowl that we thought was olive oil but turned out to be dishwater! Water glasses were hot. Pizza was dry and chewy and hard to get through even with a steak knife.

Loved it, I loved the italian staff. Came to supermaxi for the first time, felt extremely welcome. We shared a bit of everything I loved the pizza there, it's definately a toss up between the Baden Powell hotel and supermaxi for best pizza rights. The ravioli was a highlight, great portion and well seasoned. Top job guys

Simple, elegant and tasty. The name makes it sound like you are dining inside a giant women's hygiene product however everything I tasted at SuperMaxi was classy. From the fetta stuffed olives to the arancini balls which were hard and crunchy on the outside and soft and delectable on the inside. For main I chose the linguini tossed with prawns, zucchini, chilli and garlic which was lip smackingly delicious all washed down with a caraffe of the house wine which seemed to go perfectly. The service was flawless and the atmosphere buzzed. Even though it was mostly hard surfaces and high ceilings in the large dining hall it wasn't too loud and you could actually hear your fellow diners talking, superbonus from supermaxi. Can't wait to eat there again.
Joe Amad
Highly recommended. Atmosphere was pleasant. We had entrees of olives, eggplant balls and arancini all were delicious. I had the puttanesca pizza. It was crusty fresh and tasty. All round it was spot on.
Ruby-Jean
Lovely. Great pizza, great ambience and good vibe. Food was lovely and service attentive.

* doesn't make you hip<br/><br/><br/>-----24 Jun, 2012-----<br/><br/>Reasonable food though soup so heavily laden with Parmesan that it couldn't be finished. Staff didn't question half full bowl taken away. This suggests a level of indifference that I find somewhat unedifying. Just a tip guys. Refusing to use reduced fat milk in coffees does make you hip. It just shows total disrespect to the desires of your customers and costs you lots of $$$$ worth of missed coffee orders.

Awesome Service.. From the moment we walked in I new this was going to be good. We were quickly met at the door and shown to a table, the waiter then had menu's, water and nibbles on the table within a minute. Not hard but so many restaurants get it wrong and leave you waiting at the door and for a menu.<br/><br/>The food was also awesome, and the level of service never faltered all night.<br/><br/>Well worth a visit.
Barbara
SuperTasty. Been here twice, loved the mains and deserts. Wines expensive for a pizza joint but food good.
Dani
Snooty. Pasta was bland & service a bit lacking....loud crowded sat night....sorry will not be back

Top 2 pizza in melbourne. Supermaxi delivers on the pizza front - it's bases are deliciously charred and chewy. I think DOC (Carlton) trumps it but only by a whisker. The fried custard desert is off the charts too. Yet to try the pasta and other mains, so can only vouch for the pizza. Not too expensive for quality - from $15 - $21 (from memory). Service is generally good. I recommend to book ahead

Best service ive had in melbourne. Food was fantastic. Great atmosphere. Thankyou guys! We will be back

Fantastic!! This place repl.... Fantastic!!<br/>This place replicates the best that is on offer on Italy<br/>Great pizzas and the linguine is to die for<br/>Definitely worth the experience<br/>Great atmosphere with engaging waiting staff<br/>Mario

Fantastic service, yummy wine and food. I cant stop thinking about the fried custard:)

Had dinner here last night. Entrees and pizza for main. Just beautiful. Service was perfect! Will be back for sure!

Great dinner :). Firstly the fitout is spot on and immaculate. Service was attentive and knowledgable. Standouts were the fried green tomatoes with burrata (from the specials) and the pizza with pancetta and Gorgonzola - a must for cheesophiles! The only thing that surprised us were the stuffed olives - the cheese was really neither here nor there....if you closed your eyes and ate it whole you wouldn't know there was anything inside. The wine list was small but had prety much something for everyone. Would happily pop in for another meal there :)
Leya-rose
I really appreciate a space that has thought about the sound - this resturant is lovely and quiet even when it's full. However, I don't appreciate it when you make a booking for 8.30 and are told you must wait 30 min or your table - "you can have a drink at the bar while you wait" shame really, we stood there for thirty minutes waiting for our table and not one staff member served us a drink - bad start to a dinning experience. The food was good- but not amazing, and the wine list has one $25 bottle then jumps to $70+ (the Pinot is lovely) ~ still, despite our rocky start we left feeling warm, satisfied and happy, worth a look + make up your own mind.

What a great meal!. We had a selection on entrees and a pizza for starters, the Fried Calamari with Squid Ink Pasta for main, and the pannacotta for dessert.<br/><br/>The meal was fabulous, the service was fun and friendly and the atmosphere was fresh and clean. Perfect for special occasions!
Mr Chef
10/10 4 me. This is my fifth vist , <br/>starters we had polpette Di melanzane, cavolfiore Di gigia & boscaiola pizze 10/10 .<br/>Then we had linguine chilli prawns, with zucchini and a mixed grill with home made sausages 10/10.<br/>Desert limoncello semifreddo, with mixed melon salad 10/10<br/>Service was great, they managed to get all 18 of our meals out at the same time and the food was very well presented.<br/>Great job to chef Rita & the team,

It's a shame that this place suffers from it's own perceived sense of awesomeness.
Food Critic
The attitude of staff were atrocious, noise place with overpriced pizza. My pizza was burnt on one side. Very noisy place with no air-conditioning. Won't go there again!!!
I Love Pizza
What's with the attitude?. Been waiting to try supermaxi for ages and the pizza was lovely although a little burnt on the base for my liking. Loved the vibe also but what is with the attitude of the staff. People - be hospitable to your customers - that should be in your job description. I am new to the north side and on the lookout for the best pizza. Supermaxi will not be getting my dollar again.
Scarlett
Terrific!. Have been here 4 times already & have always been very pleased with the food. Starters, pizzas & desserts always spot on. The Sicilian pizza is terrific!! Prices are spot on too. A great place to meet friends for a nice, casual meal.
David Madrid
Pizza looks awful. The idea that pizza has to be misshapen to be "authentic" is false. I prefer flat-based pizza in quadrants. Also, pizza is a proud, peasant food in Italy. This curious notion of making it upmarket, gentrifying it, is wrong. As is the case with authentic tapas in regional Spain, which is traditionally offered free, with libations. The transformation of pizza in Melbourne us curious, bizarre and arrivistic.
Anna Rogers
Fantastic food and great service. We didn't have a booking, but they did a great job fitting us on table that was booked for later on. The food was soooo good. Quality ingredients and perfectly executed. The staff were excellent - attentive and professional with a bit of character. We felt really well looked after. There was a great vibe in the restaurant too. Not cheap, but so many other places charge the same prices without the service or food to back it up. Keen to come back and try more of the menu.
Absoloodle
7.5 out of 10. After reading many reviews after Supermaxi first opened about the poor service... Well they must have really stepped up their game because I couldn't fault the service. Entrees were really yummy. We ordered steak (ok) and gnocchi (better than ok) for mains. Don't know if we'll go back but we have ordered takeaway pizza from there... (tastes just like Ladro).
Dr.Food
I was surprised with the food to be honest I didn't like the layout but my oh my the food was beautiful staff were great and my fried custard desert was amazing good job guys !!! I'll b back
Jo Ko
First time - found the pizza size was massive but yum. Thin crust, perfect cheese, beautifully sauced...but still no Pizza Espresso for me. Delicious dessert however in the fried custard with vanilla bean ice-cream. Great atmosphere too cosy and warm.
Jennpf
Never got to eat..... Made a reservation on a Saturday night. We were late (about 10 minutes) as it is tricky to park around that area on a Saturday night. When we arrived we were told our table had been given away.....ten minutes and no phone call to double check we were coming. Did not like the attitude of the greeter but no problem - we were late. Seated at the bar....in front of the plates and other condiments. Staff kept on reaching across us to get items piled up on the bar infront of us. We waited at the bar for some time and were unable to order a drink or food.<br/><br/>It was very noisy (concrete floors).<br/><br/>We got deed up. We left without eating as we were made to feel like we were being punished for being late and complaining that our table had been given away ......Not going back.
Gordie Reid
Great food, expensive ordinary wine list. Went to Supermaxi and shown one of 2 tables for 2. One was at the door and the other next to the kitchen! Whats with that. Punishing small groups I thought. Food was excellent. Pizzas, salads, desserts all faultless and delish! What lets this restaurant down was the overly expensive yet ordinary for the price wine list. The cheapest bottle was $45 and in the bottle shop is only $12. Thats a too-greater mark up for an ordinary red. Per glass $18 !! The waitress was way to overbearing coming back to top up your glass after every sip (Leave us alone please) Overall great food and atmosphere even though the tables for 2 are in nasty spots. Guys, less pretention on the wine costs. A standard table wine at a reasonable price should be added.
Jjaass
Just ok. The staff seemed friendly and service good.My entree of eggplant polpette were salty and fried in old oil.Not impressed. My partners cream of cauliflower soup was delicious as was her pizza main.My veal (yearling) costalette was ok.could have been much better with a little more finesse.I will be willing to give it another go .
Bridie Murphy
Lovely birthday dinner thanks!. Had my birthday dinner here with friends and had a great night. Really friendly staff. Pizza's were delicious (though they could have a few more veggie options). Some friends had the steak and said it was really good too. Deserts were even better! Definitely be back and highly recommend.
Nick Rivers
Benefit of the Doubt. Really wanted to love this place as the chef has pedigree and it does have the chic inner city pizza joint feel that I kinda love about Ladro - but it was a bit too noisy, the pizza's were good without being great and the drinks on offer could do with a bit more effort. The service was great, but they did seem to be straining at the seams a bit.<br/><br/>My gut feeling is I was there on a night they would rather forget and I reckon it will only improve. Good to see more cool stuff opening on this side of town.<br/><br/>Potential!
NJ
Excellent..... This was my 2nd visit to Supermaxi and our evening was excellent. The meals were delish, esp my crumbed veak with coleslaw. Very tasty. The italians (and the japanese) know how to cook veal culters beautifully. The staff were a delight and always smiling.<br/><br/>However, the place has the worst accoustics. It is always "too loud" and i have left with a headache on both occasions. There are too many good restaurants in Melbourne that are let down by their poor accoustics (the worst being Hellenic Republic)...despite this, the night was excellent and will return. Bravo Supermaxi!
Deborah Pacheco
Loved it. I'm not Italian but had some Italian pallets with me and they thought it was fantastic. I tried the fried caramel for dessert- its a must try !
Moccy
Delightful. The pizza is sexy. Oozing with great Italian cheese, covered with just enough topping. Even sexier are the arancini with leek and taleggio. I love them so much, I have tried to replicate them at home (I always fail, so I come back to get my fix).
Alista Tiddy
Amazing Pizza. Have to say I was a little bit disappointed the first time I went here as my main meal was relatively average BUT I went there the other night for just pizza and al I can say is; Best pizza I have had in my life. Magnificent!
Jason
I had a really quite bad prawn pasta. It was drowning in oil - so much I feel sick thinking back on it - and lacked any other flavours to speak of. Service and vibe was very good though.
Gremlin
Superb. Don't know why this place gets a bad wrap. Four of us went for dinner at Supermaxi on Saturday night, after reading some of the reviews I was worried about the service, well I shouldn't have been. From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. Attentitive with about being in your face. The waitress we had did a great job, to the point that our glasses of water where never empty.<br/><br/>The food was fantastic. We had a couple of the pizza's and they where great, the veal was a delight and the fish melt in your mouth.<br/><br/>Overall we had a great time and we'll be going back for sure.<br/><br/>WELL DONE SUPERMAXI
Simon Lusted
Really pretty good. Great food. Great service, very attentive and cheerful, everything came out quickly and it was a busy night. Fried custard desert was beautiful. It is a little on the noisy side, busy resteraunts tend to be i guess, the cheapest wine buy the glass is 11 bucks, we were buying the carafe of house red which was fine and 20 bucks. and who has coke but no diet coke. I don't think the pizza are expensive, as others have said, given quality ..mine was 19 bucks. Non pizza eaters were happy too...we'd go back
Chris. R.
Hoping to go here but called to cancel a booking made as i got sick. received a sarcastic response from other ebd of phone. wont even bother with this place. the reviews speak for itself, im not going to waste my time and money on a egotistical establishment regardless how 'good' their pizza is.
Affogato Addiction
Top class Pizza. Good quality pizza, excellent ingredients. (Highly recommend the GTV - eggplant pizza). Generous serve. Good desserts, though quite a small portion for their price. Friendly service. <br/><br/>It is quite noisy though, difficult to hear more than the person next to you, they really need to put some drapings on the walls or something to dampen the loud echoiness of the room.
SLP
Dont rush.. Prices were not reasonable but willing to overlook due to very good pizza.<br/>Left on a sour note due to attitude of waitress and manager at the bar when EFT somehow when haywire and I was overcharged and asked for the overcharge to be refunded . Wont be going back.
Sui
Delighted to say that we visited tonight and service was fantastic - attentive, friendly and helpful. Food was a delight. The artichokes (side order) are a must - a homemade delight, making supermaxi well worth the visit.
Emma
Dissapointing. I loved Ladro and was keen to check out Supermaxi.<br/><br/>On the first visit, the restaurant was chaotic, pizza's slightly burnt and the rabbit ragu pasta good, but not great. John Lethlean was in the restaurant and they stuffed up his order. oops.<br/><br/>I tried again My second visit was with a group of 6. The service was slow and erratic. Everyone who had pizza loved them, put the pasta was nothing to write home about. Our wine glasses emptied, but staff did not offer a top up. A missed opportunity to sell another bottle of wine, as we all wanted more but it was impossible to get the waitresses attention. The deserts were ok but not great, the crumble dessert was tasteless and the place is so noisy you can barely hear the person next to you.<br/><br/>I was with 6 locals and we all came to the conclusion that we would not bother again.

Noisy!. DInner for 6 one Saturday night a few weeks back-packed to the rafters, good vibe but sooooo noisy-they really need some absorption on the walls or floors as it was impossible to hear each other. The food was lovely and the service friendly if a little erratic. Prices reasonable-think I will return but perhaps early one weeknight to avoid the ear strain!

We love supermaxi. The food is excellent Italian cooking with a touch of new and with a touch of home cooking. Rita brought out grapes from her fathers vine at the end of the night She uses and loves quality products. The bread the oil and excellent. The wine list us well thought out. It is all good. We have been a number of time now snd will be returning very soon

Jury's still out on this one. Had a great night with friends, brilliant food - as you would expect from the ex-founding partner of Ladro. Service was definitely odd and not of the same calibre as Ladro. Disorganized chaos would be the most apt descripton. Otherwise a great addition to the North Fitzroy/Northcote neghbourhood. Hope they overcome the teething problems.

I would have to agree with the other review..from the moment we walked in it was a disaster. These guys have an over inflated Sense of what they are. I've been a ladro fan for years and was looking forward to this venture. Expect bad attitude from staff ... Complete chaos..think faulty towers. Stuffed up orders and the waiter had the audacity to ask me thrice...are you sure you ordered the fish? Yes I think I was pretty sure I know what I ordered..then tells me they ran out of fish and the lamb is better anyways ...which I refused and some other clown came over and said they will do me the fish!!! Drama drama ... Oh the food did come ..menu is decent and the food was fine ...not worth the hype .. If people think this is a great place ..seriously you have no idea ..or prepared to accept bad service

Chaotic. Great Italian food, but a very small selection to choose from. The staff ran around , with not much happening. <br/>The service was slow, but the redemption was they <br/>advised us the food was finally coming, & was very good quality.

My initial mouthful was a combination of salty anchovy oil and chewy, cheesy goodness from the mozzarella. My next bite was the last of the flower, which was still holding a piece of anchovy swimming in it's own juices. That mouthful was an salty explosion. As I progressed down the stem of the flower, the salty theme remained with the seasoning... devastatingly good!

Supermaxi – an odd name for a pizza place, and boy has the buzz been building about this one since it opened not too long ago. Much of the buzz has, of course, been due to the involvement of Rita Macali, ex-head chef of Ladro. We came to see if Macali’s n

After numerous times trying to hit up Supermaxi with fellow food blogger wankster Alex from The MSG , we finally made it. We kept postponing due to forgetting, insomnia, brokearsedness, work - you name it, it happened. In case you're not aware, The MSG is

Supermaxi is very similar to Ladro in its spartan blank-wall/dark timber furniture combination and relaxed neighbourhood feel. The menu is also very familiar,
