Review Cavallini Bakery & Patisserie - North Fitzroy

Mel B
Delicious almond croissants as well as other sweet smelling pastries and sandwiches! Love how the locals come together and sit and have a coffee along this strip. The almond croissant is flaky, buttery and super light! And for only $6.40, yes pls! The frangipane filling has a nice kick and perfect spice to it, but could do a bit more depth. The pastry itself was beautiful.

I loved the pork sandwich, coffee wasn't too bad either. Maybe the person behind the counter could be a bit more courteous and welcoming.

5 stars because they make the best croissants I've ever eaten. Much better than Lune and $5.30 which is quite reasonable. They've got a proper crust to them but still a buttery delicate interior. Usually I get coffee elsewhere though, it wasn't fantastic the couple of times I tried it. I didn't enjoy the quiche at all. The cheesecake was alright. The typical clientele are certainly a bit older, I wouldn't eat in here as a young person, vibes are off. Some of the staff are lovely, some seem a bit pretentious. One called me sir once which was a bit weird

So thankful to have this place as my local bakery! From the scrumptious quiches to the flaky croissants, from the satisfying cheese-loaves to the magnificent opera cakes, there's something for every occasion. The inviting and familiar atmosphere makes it a perfect meeting spot for a coffee and a bite to eat.

I moved to the area during lockdown and Cavallini have kept me strong. They only make perfect things. The bread is excellent. The croissant are world class, the apple crumble bombolone worthy of a love sonnet. And today they brought back the escargots. The best I ever tasted. The staff are friendly, but they take their work seriously. The products of their work are seriously brilliant.

Quite a good range of yummy cakes on offer here. Coffee is good as are the light meals on offer. Music won't send you running out. Seems to cater to the senior set in North Fitzroy.
Maryan Valverde
Pretty good coffee. Pastries and so on look delish I didn't have them though. Maybe next time!

Latte is ordinary ... pastry a little bit better, cakes are even better and ambiance, the back room is just sensationally serene ... great space to chill out.

Cavallini has been a family favorite since it first opened many years ago. Delicious food and great coffee always greet us as well as the amazing staff who go the extra mile to make us feel welcome. A day we can visit Cavallini is a GOOD day.

Gorgeous cakes and pastries! Beautifully presented and served. Always busy. Probably because of the quality!
Dez Mair
It's my local. Always good value and nice staff. Wonderful pastries and sandwiches.

Good coffee , this place takes me back to Europe!!!!!

Robert, Congratulations ! I still make the Campari and Grapefruit sorbet you made for me and my Mediterranean cook book in Sydney.

Yummy food, cakes and coffee. Great location, plenty of parking in front.
Marija Marijić Barbir

Outstanding quality. Don't know where to start and where to finish when I'm there. The bombolone is amazing.

Great coffee, great food

Cavallini has been a constant comfort during lockdown. The food is always fresh and tasty, and the coffee consistently spot on customised to how we like it. The takeaway process is smooth and nothing is too much trouble for the friendly staff.
Queen Of Food
An array of cakes, pastries, focaccias and bread makes this a perfect spot for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. Everything is cooked or baked fresh, and leaves you wanting more. I’ve been a regular visitor for a number of years now and my favourite go-tos are the bread - wow, perfect crunch with soft fluffy insides, the apple pie - the best in Australia, a perfect balance of sweetness and cinnamon, the custard bomba - yum yum yum, the caprese focaccia - a must have. Love visiting this place, never disappoints!

Yummy cakes including gluten free <br/>So cosy and quaint and would be wonderful in winter <br/>I love the decor especially the display at the back of the counter <br/>Great attention to detail <br/>The food tastes amazing <br/>The coffee is great <br/>Cafe is so authentic <br/>I even got a beautiful salad for lunch to takeaway <br/>Such a beautiful birthday cake <br/>😋😍🤓❤️

Toby's coffee is banging. Best coffee in clifton hill! The almond croissant is good too.<br/>If we walk past and Toby is there we get coffee. If we walk past and Toby is not there we don't get coffee.

3.5: Love this place for something decadent and tasty. The New Yorkers are delicious! Not too many options but Always busy. Coffee isn’t a strong point, though.

I really enjoyed our quick coffee and Sicilian vanilla cannoli during our morning stroll. The coffees were perfect and the outside tables have overhead heating to take away some of the chill in the air. The store itself is smallish but beautiful inside in an old world way with dark timber and ornate fittings. There is a huge selection of sweets/ biscuits/ cakes to choose from as well as other nibbles that may take your fancy. Really worth the visit and we’ll be back too!<br/>

7/10<br/><br/>Update 08/12/2018<br/>Latte is still ordinary ... pastry a little bit better, cakes are even better and ambiance, the back room is just sensationally serene ... great space to chill out.<br/><br/>PREVIOUS<br/>Pastry specialist ...<br/><br/>What's not to like about the location and set up of this cafe? Iconic vintage shopping strip, inner suburbia, wide undercover footpath ... perfect spot for a lazy Melbourne afternoon outdoor coffee time.<br/><br/>European style cafe, good service, coffee needs some tuning up but their pastries are good.

Well done to Cavallini for being open on Good Friday, popped in for some hot cross buns to go and was very impressed at how well they were made, the coffee is of a similar standard, top stuff !!
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
Come here regularly to get my takeaway lunch - never disappointed with their pastries, pies, baguettes or arancinis. Also does great coffees. Lacking in warm customer service though - not exactly what I'd call friendly...
Dina Kerr
Been to this place many times we love this authentic Italian place. An array of delicious cakes and pastries ... Love the white raspberry cake. Good coffee and very well priced. Try anything you won't be disappointed.

Five star food, five star service everytime from the gang at Cavalini. The pastries & desserts are delicious beyond words, coffee from the drip delicious!! Great ambiance and decor!! Love this place to bits!!!!

The sweets here are delicious. Some good choices and reasonably priced. Coffee is ok but not the best in the area. Where this cafe is let down is the service. There's never enough staff when it's busy. All in all though a consistent cafe where I think you will get what you pay for and you will find a clean table.
Stefanie
Very unaccommodating staff. Made our happy Sunday afternoon very bitter with the poor service, in particular the older female manager. Used to be a big fan of the cafe, however won't be going back after our horrible experience. GO TO CAFE NEXT DOOR INSTEAD.
Orianna
Lacking customer service..ordered coffee, cakes etc plus one scoop ice cream for child in cup however manager advised<br/>unable to provide unless you purchase two scoops. One scoop ice cream is sold only on a cone.Offered to purchase one of the cheap plastic cups only to be told against shop rules. We cancelled our order and spent $65<br/>at the cafe next door.
Natalie
Amazing food and sweets. Loses points for accepting cash only. If you're going to run a business you should offer merchant payment facilities to your customers.
Mary-mia Ioculano
This beautiful and elegant Cafe with flavours of Europe. They make their own pastries and cakes on the premises and have beautiful display cabinets, large selection sweet treats from macron to Lemon tarts and their own Cronut, which is between a doughnut and a croissant pastry. They serve original Chai tea, with the tea leaves and spices. The tea is served in a beautiful pot. Had the French baguette with chicken and fresh salad with a tiny bit of aioli mayonnaise. Absolutely delicious. I found the food fresh the service was very good and polite and the place was very pretty with its large chandeliers. Beautiful courtyard at the back with ample seating. It's a lovely place. Will be back thoroughly enjoyed it. This place also sells beautiful gifts, like teapots and handmade biscuits and cakes beautifully boxed. 👍

Milan is packed with restaurants that serve a wide variety of world cuisines. like all Italian cities, it has its own culinary traditions, and thanks to recent waves of immigration, the range of ethnic restaurants has increased enormously, guess what folks!!! That's sounds a lot like Melbourne to me, <br/>for my little piece of Europe I head to Cavallini, an artisan bakery, patisserie and espresso bar nestled in the quaint Queens Parade shopping strip in North Fitzroy <br/>lets go for the locals favourite Compagnolo peasant sandwich filled with bacon, egg, and delicious tomato sugo<br/>My god it tastes good, this sandwich is an amazing example of the work they put in at Cavallini. the deep, <br/>rich tomato sauce seeps into the breads pores, the bacon is smoky, the egg runny all of this is held inside the rustic, crusty bread. "I imagine this sandwich will never make its way off the menu, and why should it, Nonna's got nothing on this one."<br/><br/>

I'm a big fan of the Croissant here. Really delicious and addictive.Coffee<br/>is also nice, staff is friendly. In this area, not so many good cafés...
Crispymelbreview
Their doughnuts, pastries and cakes are still delicious, albeit pricey; however, I am refraining from eating here after poor service and lacklustre coffee on my last occasion.<br/>This WAS one of the stars of Queens Pde years ago.
Maude Farrugia
Pretty much our favourite place for breaky or lunch. For breakfast the "Campagnolo" (peasant toastie filled with bacon, egg & delicious tomato sugo), for lunch the super simple but perfect Caprese pizza, for a treat... anything from the cabinet, they are all delicious (but the almond croissants are pretty top notch)! Staff are really genuinely fantastic and so kind to our wee boy. And it's really reasonably priced too.
David Ensor
Bought hot cross buns that are worse than any Aldi, Woolworths or Coles bun I've ever bought. Dry, tasteless and mostly dry dough with not much else. Don't waste your money. Seriously
John Smith
This nuggets, is the greatest place in Melbourne. Very few hipsters go here. Everything is good, the barista will make you feel like life is worth persisting with.
Nick Komo
Have been going for years here. Coffee always good.<br/>During summer nice ice coffee and homemade icecream.<br/>Fresh pastries and bread everyday available and great selection :-)
My French Rituals
Great selection of pastries, cakes and breads on display at Cavallini yesterday. I was going to try out their croissants but the sight of trays of custard and Nutella bombolones distracted me! Tried one of their Nutella bombolone, very nice! Will have to come back one weekend to try their cronuts!
Anhonestreviewer
Great coffee. Great food, the campagnolo is delicious and always upsetting when they're sold out! And during the colder months they always keep the outside section warm !
Jose And Anita
Can't go past a Cavallini Campagnolo (2 egg, bacon, spicy tomato sauce, mayonaise toasted in delicious crusty bread) on Saturday morning, and coffee consistently good too. Some may say it needs a coat of paint but Cavallini keeps it together, and buzzes with a really familiar air. Plus the bread is outstanding.

Coffee was dishwater; croissant was burnt to a crisp; this place used to be so good but I suspect there has been a. Change in ownership of late. I'll wait for another change before I go back

Are they describing the Cav's I know?. Or are these reviews by trolls? I'm a local; Cav's has been my cafe for several years, and in my experience the staff are warm and helpful. They greet regulars by name, wait patiently for customers to choose which pastry they want, manage complex family orders, serve biscuits to dogs... Coffee is usually excellent, though I've often bolted my mignon or bocconcino before it arrives.

Pastries are fantastic, savouries are a reasonably good standard, but only in contrast to the sweets. A lovely treat but it could get taken for granted if you come here too often.
Katherine Chiu
They are really good at doing macaroons as well and they have a special flavour of the week. This week's flavour was chocolate mint.

Robert Coco's Cavallini bakery is a brilliant addition to the Queens Parade strip. I doubted the place could bare one more bakery (in fact one has closed recently) but Cavallini is of such high quality, folks come from miles around the sample a leek, proscuitto and taleggio tart and some of Toby's decent coffee. I even detour there, back to my old stomping ground, on occasion. I needed a baguette for dinner so made a detour to Cavallini's this morning and couldn't resist the egg and bacon toastie (it had some hi-falutin' Italian name, but we all know what it really is) and a good long cafe latte. The eggs weren't quite cooked through, and the bacon was delicious. The bread was of course crunchy and chewy in the right ratio and the tomato chutney just sharp enough to cup through the fat of the bacon and the richness of the egg. a small pocket I don’t venture to often – this little café-bakery puts forward a mean selection of gourmet sandwiches, pastries and sweets.
Luke In Bundoora
Great coffee, dismal service. It shouldn't take three people five minutes to take an order with no other customers about. The order shouldn't have to be repeated three times. No reason for service with a snarl. The attitude is appalling and the coffee doesn't make up for it.
Miss B
Gone off. If your into a thimble of lukewarm coffee, overpriced pastries, disorganised staff and uncomfortable seating this is the place for you. I must admit their cakes are amazing but only if your a well heeled professional living in a mansion in North Fitzroy $$$
Denise
I refuse to pay for arrogance!. So tired of walking into this cafe in a great mood and leaving in a bad one! Such a shame because it is my local and the product unbeatable. Who is responsible for employing and training this arrogant, impolite staff?! Enough. not paying for attitude anymore.
Charlesmacster
Avoid. Ordered a coffee here yesterday. Aside from tasting like lukewarm milo, the staff were disorganised, slow and aggressive. The barista was sniffing the milk sitting in an array of dirty jugs to see if it was still useable, during which three coffees were returned which she angrily threw into the sink. <br/>Melbourne has wonderful coffee and service, but no evidence of either here.
Foodandfood2014
Old fav. Have been heading here for lunch on and off for years.<br/>It still has a lot of good to offer.<br/>It's just that it lost charm a while back...<br/>Customer service and cleanliness is on the low,<br/>Possibly an update would bring this beautiful cafe back!
Albert Schweitzer
Average coffee and pain au chocolate. Coffee took 10 minutes to get to the table and was not hot. Coffee and pastry were served by slapping them down on my open newspaper. Staff talked about vomiting. Maybe I wasn't served nicely because I'm not a local. Won't be back unfortunately. Plenty of other options in the area.
Alan Peters
Okay coffee but nothing special. Nice pastries but old school coffee....just average.
Kris Nescovski
The best coffee! We come from Northcote despite being surrounded by cafés in our local area. Staff are lovely too.
Lena
Absolute favourite in Melbourne. I've been coming here for years, and while the service can be a little bit weird (some of the older lady waiters are a bit abrupt and scary-stern), it is always worth it! The floor staff are wonderful, food and coffee comes quickly and is absolutely amazing. Always fantastic quality and beautiful fresh ingredients. Baguettes, pastries, desserts, everything I have had has been memorable in the best way. Love this place :)

OMG... Pastries and bombolone are to die for. Must try to keep it to a once a mnth treat or else need to re mortgage the house. Highly recommend

A lovely little euro-style bakery/patisserie. The almond croissants are out of this world. So are all the pastries I've had there for that matter!<br/>Coffee is nice and tea comes in a very pretty pink pot reminiscent of proper teaparties. Seating out the front is very well sheltered and heaters keep it toasty warm in winter. The staff are also super friendly. Overall a top notch place for a pastry and a cup of coffee- don't even consider degani next door...<br/>Only suggestion I might make would be to have water more readily available.
Geeboy
Everything about this place is spot on. Especially the Gorgeous young blond bronzed waiter... Yum..

I loved it! Coffee was beautiful, one of the best I have had recently. An academic friend of mine highly recommended Cavallini yday, I got here today and got a couple of hours of work on my computer today. Very Parisian feel, I sat in the back room near the kitchen, lovely vibe and I was quite undisturbed. I had the spinach quiche which I initially didn't have much expectations of but turned out to be stunning!! Fresh quality, great pecorino cheese and very flavorsome. I'll be back here tomorrow - thanks for being my idea of a perfect cafe!! :-)
Mandy Lang
This is a really cool little cafe but despite the yummy cakes and great staff you've got to make the decision to either take out or sit outside so you don't have to listen to the blare of mediocre trumpets that play on loop. I know it seems like a pedantic point to make, but it honestly wrecks my experience there every time! That said the coffee is still amazing so it won't be stopping me just yet!

Great Bread & Pastries !!. Here you will find a fine selection of baked goodies and bakery treats, gets a little busy on weekends but worth the wait, overall a fantastic local Artisan Bakery.
Felicia Lindt
Delicious cakes but service ?. I love this place, they make the best macarons, best cheesecakes, best hot chocolate etc etc., but I am consistently disappointed by the service. A few weeks back the store was not busy and as I waited near the counter for service, an attendant saw me, he actually looked at me, then turned away to talk to the attendant next to him. I had to say "excuse me' before he actually served me. Then at no point did he say thank you when he took my money. All he said was "that's $12". Really poor service and all I need is another great cake shop in the area for me to decide that Cavallini isn't worth it any more.
Jen Dorjee
Delicious food, reasonable coffee and average service. the baked goods are what keep me coming back!

Coffee and Bacon Egg Sandwich. Read the recent review about the coffee. Must say I have not found the same issues. My coffees have been great, and the toasted egg and bacon sandwich is the best, especially for a hangover. But get in before 10am as they sell out quick, and it gets busy.
Nicole Moore
Cavallini is still my favourite coffee and cake shop in the area. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the coffee is perfect every time. I love the cakes here too, worth every cent and calorie!
Greg Lavell
Coffee is really average. Avoid.
Erin Wyatt
Coffee has gone downhill. I had one of the worst coffees I have ever had in Melbourne, Luke warm, weak and the usual attitude when served. I will stick to one of the million other cafes in fitzroy!
Coffee Fiend
Had to wait ages for my coffee. No apology. The coffee itself was on par with the $1 711 coffee. Very disappointed.
TP
Smile please. Certainly the quality of the pastries, quiche and breads is tops, but the service... maybe I am pedantic but I always say please when I order and use a friendly tone.. not reciprocated here.., a smile,.even a thank when returning change wold help. Seems like the purveyors have an attitude problem...
Dr D
Some things OK but..... Sandwiches and some pastries here are good if pricey. Baguettes are a bit of a disaster - the normal baguette looks ok but is dry and fluffy like cotton wool with a crust, the traditional baguette is better. Both the croissants and chocolate croissants are too heavy, too oily. Having lived in France for 5 years I can say that even butter croissants should not be this heavy and oily and the taste is of slightly overheated butter. Would never get away with this kind of mistake in France. Coffee I have usually found to be OK to good, though the wait is often far too long. Find some good croissants somewhere - la Niche in Smith St for example (their croissants come from Noisette) and see what they are supposed to be like. Staff can be irritating - I asked politely for a different baguette once and was told, it's not overcooked, they are meant to be like that.

Great pastries. Kick ass pastries. Friendly service. Very popular with the locals but with a little patience and a little luck you'll be settling in for a very satisfying bite to eat in no time at all.
Rikki
Good stuff. We drive bout 20 minutes to get here. We luv the coffee in a big soup bowl cup and they do the best Campognolo. Everyone was eating them !!<br/>Luv the atmosphere sitting outside whether its winter or summer.<br/>Pastries are yum, havent tried many but def yum the ones we have tried. Breads we havent tried yet but def will. Its a great Cafe in inner Melbourne.
YL
Cavallini is making "shades of grey" macaron, must try it!!!
Tacomaniac
Croissants!!. The Florentine croissants here are absolutely AMAZING I come here for them all the time and would highly recommend! Too bad they're prone to selling out if you don't get there early enough!
FoodN
Good coffee and cakes. Shame that the old staff quit. Toby made the best coffee and was a lot more friendly. Pat was also very welcoming.
Adamw
The bakery has great Croissants and a good atmosphere, but when we tried to get a takeaway pizza last night they seemed completely disorganised. After waiting almost 15 mins they hadn't even taken our order and the manager was quite rude when we enquired how much longer it might be, so we left.

A touch of Paris. Whenevr I walk into Cavallini, I alwys leave my life for an hour or so and imagine I am in a cafe in Paris, or Florence if zucchero is playing. The coffee is good but the pastries are sublime - the only time I allow myself to eat butter.<br/><br/>Then a pram knocks into my table and I am back in my real world having had a far too long lunch break and needing to rush back to work. Thanks Cavallini for transporting me.
Vince
Love the coffee in this place - been coming every morning for almost 5 years and I can't think of a better way to start my day. Don't understand why Dan Ryan thinks the coffees are $5. I have paid $2.80, and as Cavallini's prices went up over the kast 5 years: $2.90, 3.00, 3.20 and now 3.40 which is commensurate with what other cafes are charging. Had a beautiful Cuban Single origin this morning for $3.40.
Jonathon Sciola
Fantastic food, music atmosphere. Coffees were watery, bitter and burnt. Milk was good though.
Ashangel
Good food. The best cannoli !!
Janetta
Convenient and fresh. Great place for a quick snack; you can choose from glass cabinets groaning with fresh slices of pizza and other delicious fattening pastries and bready things. It's frenetic and yet still cosy - plus the coffee's good.
JP
It is a bit pricey. I went there after my sis recommended that their olive sourdough bread are the best. <br/><br/>It was the second time I went there. I loved their macaroons. It is not too sweet as the one I tried in Art Center's cafe. Still to find the best Macaroon, althought I liked theirs.<br/><br/>The cafe have outdoor seating, near the Queens Pd, and seating at the back of their shop. I loved the setting as it is a great place for relax with a good book or newspaper.
GidgetShare
Bakers delight. The croissants here are divine and all the sweets and fresh baguettes are always irresistibly tempting.<br/><br/>Although the coffee is a bit hit and miss, Cavallini is surely the best place for coffee along Queens Parade.<br/><br/>Their gelato though is misleading, and is more creamy than sorbet. This is the only let down of the bakery which is always full.
Collingwoodlandia
Meh. The coffee is good, the freshly baked bread in the window is divine and the sweets are wicked. The staff are attentive and friendly and the place is usually very busy but there's something seriously lacking in Cavallini which I can only put down to atmosphere. The frenetic pace of the staff, the foot traffic and lack of any real warmth make me hesitant to eat in, I just feel like I need to buy something and leave because I'm in the way.
James O'sullivan
Low food quality for price.. Expensive price for low quality food. These pastries were definitely not baked on site and probably frozen. Plus the waiters are rude, watch out for the red head.
RachyB
Cute place, but a bit pricey. Cavallini has a lot going for it; cute decor, deliciously tempting sweets and lots of foot traffic without a great deal of competition. All factors contribute to it being popular and often busy.<br/>I have been there a number of times and do enjoy it, but can't help but feel that it just misses the mark for me.
Dan Ryan
Is $5 too much for a take away coffee? Call me thrifty...but I think it is...

I ordered a pre-made baguette with chicken, avocado, tomato and cos lettuce and aioli mayonnaise. It was plated in halves, with the fillings overflowing, and it was great. The shredded chicken was mixed with seeded mustard, which gave it the same sweet tang that you can get from a tuna sandwich. The lettuce and tomato added freshness, and the avocado added creaminess. The bread itself was homemade and fresh with a thick chewy crust and soft, dense innards. In terms of quality and quantity, it was much the same as Friends Of Mine, only not as expensive.

Come here for: bakery heaven! and if you have a sweet tooth ... Don't come here: on a diet or on a budget. These goodies will set your pocket back and your tummy forward - but are worth every cent and every inch. This is my new favourite bakery. Well, one of

Clifton Hill bakery Cavallini has also jumped on board the cronut bandwagon – but be warned the “New Yorker – Inspired by the Cronut” ($4.90) are only sold on Friday, Saturday and Sundays and they sell out quickly. The New Yorker is a bit rougher looking than the doissant topped with glaze and crumble, but it delivered more in terms of taste. The New Yorker was lighter and more airy with distinct layers when I bit into it.
