Review Munsterhaus - North Fitzroy

Darren Wicks
You don’t have to be vegan to enjoy food at Munsterhaus. You just need to be interested in eating a bowl full of delectable whole foods. Your body will thank you for it. The concept is simple... choose either a small bowl for $15, a medium bowl for $20 or a super large bowl for $30. Then choose any combination of the available salads and hot food to fill your bowl. Available options regularly changing. I’m surprised by the reviews that say this place is expensive. You pay nearly $20 these days for bacon & eggs at a hipster café... and the food here is nutrient dense, made with high quality ingredients and extremely tasty.

MORE THAN A SALAD. Brilliant! Vegetarian and Vegan food that is always available. They have some food items that are a-la-carte, but most is from the serving bar. Choose your bowl size (Large, Medium or Small) and tell them what to fill it with! Small selection of hot stuff (roast potatoes, dahl, varied vegie mix); cooked items and salads that sit at room temp: tofu in chilli jam, brocolli, roast pumpkin, noodles, rice, quinoa, greens, legumes; top with pickles, olives, ginger and inhouse-made dips. YUM!!

First time there today and food is great! The complaints about price are rubbish, I got the medium bowl for $20 and had 8 different types dishes in it- great value and makes for an interesting meal. Every dish was full of flavour, staff are friendly and helpful and make great coffee. Will be back for sure!

Walking into the restaurant is like going back in time; the wooden decor and soft pastel colours make it feel like an old diner. Meals come in three sizes, and while the price may seem a little high at first glance, the food is delicious. A mishmash of flavours slammed into a bowl to provide wholesome flavours, which are filling. The restaurant is 100% vegetarian, and appoimately 80% of the food is vegan. If you want some home style cooking, great coffee and some nice cakes, definitely swing by.

Overpriced and served like slop. Food looks great in the cabinet but it's then thrown into a bowl where all the flavours combine. And not kid friendly. We weren't made to feel welcome with prams, toddler and baby dropping food on floor. Would not return with children. 2 stars for food only.

Comfy seating area and very tasty vegan food. A nice variety in the bar that mix well together. There's new options of food everytime I visit this place. Friendly stuff and overall satisfying experience.

Currently very sick and had almost given up on finding just plain steamed veggies to be delivered to mine.... but I came across this amazing place! I called to say I wasn’t looking for anything fancy and that I just wanted something real chill and the woman facilitated me as if she were my mum! Cannot extend enough appreciation or recommend this restaurant enough!

Munsterhaus is a fantastic spot for lunch or coffee and cake. Lovely staff, really delicious food, healthy and flavoursome so great to get a bowl stacked full of goodies. Would recommend for a cozy winter meal.

Munster Haus is a standout in more ways than one. This is a place where the food is made with love, skill & attention to detail and it’s a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds the service friendly and the cabinetry hand made. It’s a work of art and craft. I don’t think it’s expensive as some others say! A choice of $10 $15 or $20 for heaped bowls. If we want organic freshly made beautifully presented food and the devoted owners to be paid then we don’t want to pay McDonalds prices do we? Thank you 🙏

It’s a 3.5 for me and just more to towards a 3 than a 4. This is the type of place you need half marks for but sadly that option is not available.<br/><br/>Ok, the food did seem a bit expensive here as other reviewers have suggested. But, I pretty much liked everything else I saw and experienced here. I had a long black and a passionfruit muffin. The coffee was adorable. A perfectly respectable Melbourne standard long black. Superbly done. The muffin had a pleasant old fashioned texture and taste. Nothing tricked up here. I liked it and it made for a good snack.<br/><br/>Service was lovely here. Gentle, efficient, nice smiles. Exactly what we all want.<br/><br/>The place has a nice feel to it perched on the corner looking east. The internal set up is pretty plain, some would call it old fashioned, but not alarmingly so. There was a lovely live act on while I was here, a person singing and playing harp and flute with backing tapes. She was excellent and very entertaining. A nice unexpected bit of mid afternoon entertainment.<br/><br/>Nice place. I’d happily return here anytime.

FOOD: 5/5 <br/>My favourites:<br/>• pumpkin <br/>• sweet chilli tofu<br/>• try their funky dip flavours!<br/>• broccoli and tempeh <br/>PRICE: 1/5<br/>AMBIENCE: 3.5/5<br/><br/>Absolute loved the food here no doubt about that but the price is incredibly high for an average size...got the large bowl for dinner and it was $30...yes the food is super delicious but it is hard to justify that amount of money for vegetarian food. The pumpkin was my fave and the tofu has lots of variations! Dips were interesting too- cauliflower curry bean etc! But to be honest I would suggest going to somewhere like tofu shop which is way cheaper (has basically the same dishes and same recipes..? Munsterhaus even sells their cookbook...I’m told they are sister cafes??) and has decent portion sizes. This would’ve gotten a five star if it wasn’t for the price for the portion sizes....staff were pretty nice and it was quite quiet but we went at dinner time which I think is a quieter trading service for them. They do live music during the day which would go well with the general homey vibe of the place. <br/><br/>Food is fab so keep it up on that front!

Very, very expensive. The food is okay, but nowhere near worth the prices they are charging. Much better and cheaper options nearby. The staff could be a bit friendlier also.

Food: There is an amazing assortment of flavours. It all tasted pretty good. Definitely food that I would be interested in eating regularly (subject to my comments in relation to price below). 4/5<br/><br/>Price: The bowls are incredibly over priced for their size. This is even compared to like-restaurants around Melbourne (Vegie Bar; Tofu Shop; Yong Green Food; Supercharger). 1/5<br/><br/>Staff: Very helpful staff, who were genuinely interested to get the right food in your bowl. But there seemed to be a lot of staff on duty (hesitate to speculate, but this could explain the high prices). 3.5/5<br/><br/>

The food is great but it’s prohibitively expensive (pretty much what every review says). If it was $5 cheaper ($20 -> $15) for the medium bowl and $10 cheaper ($30 -> $20) for the large bowl I’d go all the time but won’t return at these prices. The frustrating part is that the reviews have been saying this for years and it looks like they keep putting their prices up!
Dee Dee
The food was very good but way, way too expensive. $20 for a smaller size 'large' takeaway container. Staff lovely and friendly but really took their time with the people in front, holding up the queue where we waited a very long time and almost gave up.
Peppercorn
I regularly come here for lunch as the food is reliable, healthy and always delicious. The $15 bowl is a perfect amount. They have a large selection of delicious fresh veggie dishes, which cater for all dietary requirements. Thanks for always be so awesome guys!
Delicious Doris
Food was nice. Place had quite a lot of staff (3 walking around when there was only a total of 3 customers). $20 for their medium (which I consider small) and $30 for large bowl that you can ask them to fill from a buffet. I felt that their food was overpriced especially when compared to places like supercharger or green refectory that does something similar. Won't be returning.

Went here for a late lunch. Choice between 3 sizes of bowls $15, $20 or $25. The bowl can be filled with all kind of goodies from a buffet. I found the prices high for the serving size. Probably $5 too much for each bowl, but they could get away with maybe $12 for the small one. Food was all vegetarian and tasted beautiful. <br/>Service was good (1 person) and awkward (the other person).

Found my new favourite place! Amazing fresh veggie meal with great service. Should have taken a takeaway dish for dinner. See you again soon!
Chevyc
Been coming here for years, on average about twice a month because the food is so tasty. But, the prices keep going up, the amount dished up going down and the attitude of some staff almost insufferable. Unfortunately, will be an infrequent user from now on - shame because the food is good!

Delicious healthy food. Plenty of vegan and gluten free options.will be going back again. <br/>

Really liked this place. Paid 18$ and got a really full bowl of different salads, dips, tofu, vegetarian lasagna (really nice)... We sat in the garden at the back on a sunny day which was lovely and the iced coffee was good too. I would definitely go back on a nice day.
Harry Bates-Smith
Ordered a small bowl ($13) and it was very tastey, the tofu dishes were standouts and the others were all good. If i was loaded i'd go there all the time.
Renato
Awesome. Tasty, healthy food with a great selection and generous servings. The decor and atmosphere are on point and the service was friendly. Definitely worth a try.

I love this place for the variety. It's one place in the north to go to when you feel like you need to make up for not having enough veg during the past week.<br/><br/>Taste wise, it can be hit and miss. Some can be above average, some can be bland.<br/><br/>Our last trip there felt a bit cheated. Usually a $13 small bowl would be piled up quite generously, but not sure what's up with the older lady giving us three smaller servings.<br/><br/>It's expensive like Emma Featherstone says, so we wanna get at least what we paid for.<br/><br/>Edited: Same with the old guy! Gave so little! The least I have ever received the many times I have come here. Stay away from the old farts serving you!
Morgan
I had lunch here today and the food was amazing. Flavorsome and a huge variety! My favourite was the chilli jam tofu, so good and I don't usually love tofu!<br/>The staff were also so lovely, just great customer service! <br/>Wish I could go here everyday for lunch!
Miranda Barrett
I was disappointed with this place when I went here or lunch today- I had a soup which was so thin it was basically hot water with a couple of slithers of celery and seeds. It was also disappointing when the man asked if I wanted toast with it; he should have asked if I wanted a piece of bread the size of a 50c coin with it. The taste was so bland it was the worst representation of vegetarian food I have ever experienced.<br/><br/>I also had an orange juice which was disgusting- it was clear to me that they had not peeled the oranges before putting them through the juicer which gives the juice a very sour taste.
OysterLover
I have never enjoyed vegetarian food more than I have here. Didn't realise that you could get so much flavour into vegetables. Excellent variety of crunchy dishes, tonnes of flavour and keeps you full. Love this place!
Emmilio
Seriously $18 for a takeaway container that wasn't filled to the top...? Get the heck outta here! Food is tasty but as the prices rise, the place seems to lose more and more customers. At the end of the day, it's a salad bar. Food isn't cooked on demand so charging $25 for a 'large' bowl (eat in) is a bit ridiculous, no matter how good the food is. Won't be returning sorry.
Iceman
Been threatening to call into Munsterhaus for sometime now, and I'm sorry I didn't make time earlier. Munsterhaus offers up a myriad of home made goodies and some pretty decent coffee. There's even free Wifi :) my only criticism is that Munsterhaus is a little on the pricey side.
Pilarstar
Rude staff & owner to children. The staff were rude to my 3 year old and frankly I will never return and will be spreading the word. Very disappointed. There are so many loved cafes around. ..they really are doing themselves a disservice.
Keira Alexander
All dishes have such unique flavours, yet compliment each other beautifully. I’ve never had enough room for sweets, but if they’re of the same calibre as the rest of the food, I’m missing out. They make a fantastic flat white too.
Mochii
Overall, real yummy vegetarian food + like that you could choose as many or as little selection as you want (as long as your plate allows). Just remember to get your coffee elsewhere.
Sofia Levin
Pay for a small, medium or large plate and then and pile it high with a mountain of vegetarian goodness and enjoy surrounded by a retro interior and hungry hipsters.
Sofia Levin
Every hipster and their fixie opts for a vegetarian diet these days, so I thought I’d share my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne.
Claire TM
Way too expensive Especiall.... Way too expensive<br/>Especially the take home salad, 18$ for the container size is a bit steep
Ladypawpaw
My Excellent Tasty Healthy Local!!!. This is great vegetarian food with really nice well rounded flavours that is not just all about 'curry' and 'lentils'. I go here once a week to get a quick nourishing meal. I usually end up with few ideas for dishes I can recreate at home too.<br/>The small size bowl is $13 but I walk out of there ‘full’. There’s no way I could eat a medium size bowl to myself. If you are doing that, you would have to be a 'big' eater or share it. <br/>I do feel the need to defend this place as the reviews below seem a little negative about pricing. At the end of the day, I want this place to survive as it's so excellent and if that means paying an extra dollar for tasty easy food, then 'so be it'.<br/>The staff are always nice too and I've never had a problem with getting Tofu :-) Veggies are way better for you anyways!
Exteriorevolutions
Way too expensive, good, healthy food- just not viable.. They have reduced the bowl size, and put the prices up. Combine that with limiting your choices, and not filling the bowl to the top like they used to and its an unsustainable experience. Its great having healthy food choices, but 18$ and still be starving afterward? Nope.
Mike
Don't go here. Total rip off. The food is tasty but seriously $18 for a bowl of salad that isn't even big enough to hold 2 weetbix is ridiculous. I didn't walk away thinking it was amazing or I had anything special. I'd say walk past it.
C Hunter
Have watched the prices rise over the last few years and have now hit my tipping point. Not worth it at the prices they charge

I want to go back, but.... Yep, the food is delicious and tasty but the reasons I'll go to the Vegie Bar or Moroccan Soup Bar instead are:<br/><br/>* Tofu rationing...what the? That was probably one of the most insane things ever;<br/>* I only wanted three different dishes because I didn't want to layer all the different flavours in one bowl and actually lose the flavours. When I said I only wanted three in a medium bowl, my server was insistent that I should get 7 different varieties because he had to ration tofu so I wouldn't get much of anything. If I had a plate or platter then I might've gone up to four, maybe five? varieties but I didn't see the point in getting dishes from all around the world to compete with my tastebuds. I just wanted dishes that would work together.<br/>* On the same theme, please, use plates or those platters where the sections are divided. Bunging everything into a bowl means you might as well just serve it from one massive terrine.<br/>* I was there late morning and only a few dishes were out - there were already a few customers in but I wish I'd gone later when there was more variety to choose from (No, this wouldn't have changed my call on the number I ordered, just the variety!);<br/>* The cost :( Yep, it seems cheap but you really don't get much for your money. My companion went for the small bowl and it was tiny, really tiny. I echo the other sentiments about the costs. For that price, I'd rather go to Shakahari where I'd spend the same and be more satisfied.<br/><br/>So, yes, I loved the food but not enough to go back which is a shame because we need a lot more places like this in town and more people to eat this quality food...just with a better service and price.
PrincessYoko
Very nice food but..... Have to agree with many of the other reviewers, generally excellent food but too pricey for the serving sizes offered. One can only assume the high prices are set to keep the business afloat - "rationing tofu"? Which is a bit of a Catch 22 because I'm sure return customers (like me) would be returning more often if prices were more reasonable. Then again, a simple solution might be to replace those hopeless bowls with proper plates. The layering of food in the bowls at least gives the impression of less food - not to mention how annoyingly difficult is is to access food at the base of the bowl. However, the food is the saving grace. But don't come if you're looking for a "dining experience" as the "one dish" system doesn't afford that. Coffee is good but on the small side. Ambiance OK but seating a little uncomfortable. Overall, a very good healthy lunch stop.
Foodandfood2014
Always good. Can always rely on this cool as place to have food at any time of day<br/>Tasty healthy food.<br/>Just find its really overpriced for portion sizes.
Andreah279
Nice but a bit of a rip off. Delicious food but at too high a cost, especially for vegetarian food. I would be much more willing to return regularly if a small bowl cost me $7-8 instead of $12. with moroccan soup bar doing similar dishes down the road for half the price thats what I would opt for.<br/>Also, I would have liked it on a plate so the dishes didn't meld into one.
Joe Close
Oh my god, all those yummy dishes in one bowl -and its vegetarian, so tasty.
Cous Cous
Delicious but pricey!. I have been wanting to try this place for ages and I finally went there for lunch today.<br/><br/>It is $12 for a small bowl, $16 for a medium bowl and $22 for a large bowl. Cash only. There is only one takeaway option and that is $16 for a regular sized container you would see at most takeaway shops. <br/><br/>I wanted to spend about $12 but the small bowl was super tiny. Note: I would say I have a normal female appetite and I felt satisfied, not full when I finished the medium size bowl. So big eaters or boys - you would probably want a big plate. $22 is pretty steep! These aren't heaped bowls either - they are level bowls.<br/><br/>I found their tofu serves stingy. I agree with the other reviewer. No more than 3 pieces in the bowl despite choosing 2 dishes. The food was divine though - loved every mouthful but I came for a tofu fix. Whereas when I pointed to the quinoa they were far more generous. I guess because it is cheap to make. I would have also preferred a plate though so they didn't all get mixed.<br/><br/>The place was rather empty - maybe 3 other diners there. If only they lowered their prices a little I think this place would be packed. I imagine I'll be back at some point but I wont rush back. It just seems a tad overpriced.

Hotdiggity. Munsterhaus is the hotdiggity yum chow of lunch bowl jazz tap.<br/>It's impossible not to like.

I finally got the chance to eat here today for lunch. So happy I finally came, the food was soo delish! I had big eyes little stomach syndrome and chose the big bowl ($22) with a selection of nearly everything-pizza, roast potatoes, salads, lentil curry, fetta & spinach dip, red bean dip (special mention, the red bean was amazing!)... I had food left over that sadly I left behind, but happily I noted that they do takeaway and it's on the way home from work :)<br/>My caeliac friend was impressed, she had no shortage of options, and my other friend also left happily full.<br/>Already planning my next stop in, def worth a visit! Still full 5 hours later but it feels healthy not queasy like you can get with some filling meals

Salads and cupcakes. In looove with this place! The salads are tasty, super healthy and good value for your money. The cupcakes are really yummy, too. Definitely recommended. My only improvement is the coffee. Almost always burnt :/
ED
Good veggie fare. Tasty with good selection of veggie and generous portions
PR
Only been here once. Just now in fact. Ordered bircher muesli with yoghurt and a coffee. Probably the best bircher I have ever had. Goija berries, cinnamon poached pear, tangy sweet molasses, it was just full of flavour every mouthful offered up a new exlerience. So I would return.
Shaniquoa
Such a lovely place! Healthy and fresh and yummy food and you can eat all! I wish i can eat ther everyday only if i live closer!

Delicious and fresh. Have moved into North Fitzroy temporarily.<br/><br/>This eating spot is a minutes walk from my home.<br/><br/>Food is yummy, fresh and every time I eat here I feel like I'm doing my body a favour.<br/><br/>Free wifi here too.<br/><br/>Only a couple of things I whinge about here. Seating is hard and uncomfortable.<br/><br/>Use of bowls to serve food. All items get mixed and piled on top of each other. Prefer a flat side or dinner plate when I eat my lunch or dinner. I would like to taste individual dishes one by one and I cannot do that when they are jumbled on top of each other.....bowls are for soup, cereal and desserts guys.<br/><br/>Friendly service too.<br/><br/>Will go back despite the bowl.
Vivivivio
Brill. Excellent vegetarian fare.

Delicious food! The friendliest of staff! Awesome place and vibe. <br/>Will be back there a lot. <br/>Amazing

Amazing. This place is amazing.<br/>Fresh, delicious, healthy, superfoods.<br/>The staff are friendly and really generous with the servings.<br/>The food is super tasty.<br/>I am proud to say i am a regular :)

This is the best vegie bar I have ever eaten at!! Must try to all that havn't you will not be disappointed !!!
TildaM.M
Healthy and yummy salads!. Beautiful and healthy salads. Really like this place- whether it be to sit down and have brekkie, or to get a takeaway salad. <br/>I would only just like to briefly point out that (coming from a baristas point of view) that when I have ordered takeaway coffees, the milk has almost always been burnt. <br/>Other then that, I would highly recommend this place!
Hannah Conda
Awesome!. So tasty. Everything is lovingly made and so good!!!!!!!!
Mr Studio
The staff are super friendly and know about the dishes. The food is truly amazing and well priced. Atmosphere is great day or night, an open fire would make this place totally perfect.
Antoinette
This place is awesome! Since trying it in early may, I've been back three times already. Everything is so tasty! The plates look small but they pile them up. You won't be disappointed.
Pansy
Nice place. Terrible coffee. The food looked delicious ( I didn't try any though)
Livelovedream
Stumbled across this cafe by chance. I would highly reccomend it to any vegetarian or vegan. The food was delicious and reasonably priced as I know healthy food isn't cheap to prepare. Friendly staff and yummy treats to follow. I will be making a trip back :)

Rationing the tofu?????. Absolutely Fantastic vegetarian food, it cannot be faulted.<br/>BUT I went for takeaway last week,$16 - and for the first time was told about the "tofu rationing"rule . <br/>I have had lunch in house or takeaway on average once a fortnight since this cafe opened and have never, ever heard of the rule.<br/>The deal is you pay for either small , medium or large or takeaway and you choose from the selection of dishes displayed before you.<br/>Last week I made my selection and the last dish i asked for was the ginger tofu.<br/>The young man behind the counter said"sorry, you can't have it, you have already had two other dishes with tofu and if I let you have it , we will lose money"<br/> I assumed he was joking . I said "there is no mention of this anywhere and I always order pretty much the same thing, why wouldn't you advise customers if that was the case" he said "well it is the rule". I realised that he was not laughing.<br/>Righto.<br/>In my takeaway container were no more than three small squares of tofu.<br/>Can I say this. <br/>Misrepresentation.Breach of contract.<br/>You took my money, you didn't tell me there were 'conditions attached'<br/>You offered, I accepted -with my $16.<br/>It's a vegetarian cafe, vegetarians tend to appreciate tofu.<br/>Really, it just breaks my heart because I love the food but tofu rationing and the ATTITUDE is rude and unacceptable.<br/><br/><br/>-----26 Feb, 2013-----<br/><br/>Best vegetarian selection in Melbourne . I've been going to munsterhaus since it opened and the selection of dishes is fantastic and healthy and the staff is great . Only issue is the price - I reckon it has close to doubled since it opened - I used to go at least once a week but with the prices constantly going up , it is alas now a rare treat .
Jonathan Lovelock
Good but pricey. Bottom line, it's not super value for money. But I still like it.<br/><br/>You have to admire the variety and quality of all the vegetarian dishes on offer. As a meat eater I went away very satisfied and for not one second did I regret going there. I just kind thought, huh, if they took ~$5 dollars of all of their prices I would be in there day in day out and I reckon they'd do a lot more business.
Lauren Shay
It was delicious, healthy and I was so happy about all the variety! A little on te expensive side but filling nonetheless and the space was a bit squashy
RotKW
Delicious and Ethical!. One Friday night on my way home from work it was open. A sign on the door pronounced that it was now open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. I called my 15 year old daughter and she met me on the corner. We ventured in. The look on her face told me it was a mistake. The daughter does/did not love her vegetables. <br/><br/>For me, there was no problem. A sweet potato and glass noodle salad with Asian vegetables, chilli tofu, cooked to perfection broccoli and a grain salad combined in my bowl to deliciousness. I was so absorbed in my own delight that I didn’t realize that the teen had consumed nearly everything in her bowl, from chickpeas to green beans. <br/>The teen sneaks looks at the ‘totally hot’ young man serving while I sneak looks at how many vegetables she consumes. <br/><br/>Dinner, dessert and entertainment, good for our bodies, our hearts and easy on the wallet. Only one suggestion -- it would be nice to have a flat plate rather than a bowl.

Awesome Food. Healthy, filling, pleasant place...highly recommend
Food
Great Food. If all vegetarian food tasted like this, I would be a vegetarian.<br/>Great food, good service and they don't skimp on the serves. If they had a franchise in the city they would be making a squillion.
TomT
Great lunch option. I visit on an occasional weekday and have always enjoyed the food - consistently fresh, delicious and a good variety to choose from. I get the medium plate and it's a good feed. Simple, no fuss fare in a pleasant space.

Veggie Delight!. I am never, ever disappointed by Munsterhaus. The food is always exactly what my body and my tastebuds are looking for, delicious, vibrant vegetarian food. <br/>You choose your serving size and then you choose what dishes get loaded onto your plate. It's always a generous serve. You can find plenty to eat here if you're vegan too. I love the chilli tofu, the rice and cashew noodles, the little fritters and fried things as well as the tofu dip! The quinoa salad and the lemony kale all topped with the freshest tabouli are simply grand.<br/>I always head here when I need a good plate of filling, healthy, yummy food and I recommend you do the same!
Iloveveggies
Highly recommended. I've been slow to try Munsterhaus, partly because I couldn't check the menu before going, but I wish I hadn't waited so long. The numerous dishes on offer included various types of salads, vegetables, grains, legumes, tofu, dips, wontons, and cakes and all but a handful were vegan. Pick your bowl size, and have as much or little of anything as you want. Everything I tried was tasty, staff were lovely. I look forward to returning.
Chris Hunter
Great find! One of the top vegos!. Beautifully fitted out- wooden booths, stunning but simple Art Deco light fittings, great ambiance. Bowl sizes are deceptive, I picked the largest one thinking it wasn't that big - but they fit a lot of stuff in it! It was a struggle to finish it. Great value, delicious food.Great staff- not precious or condescending (which you can find at vego places) If I could make some suggestions- it would be better to use large plates rather than bowls so that the food is more separated, instead of having 3 or 4 layers on top of each other. forming one big mass. It would be also be good to have more hot food whilst it is still fairly cool. I loved it, will be back!

Mr Harper, from 2 reviews ago, you are a complete twat. Get a life and learn how to write proper English

Had lunch there and food was bland and boring..

Munsterhaus delights. When I first went to Munsterhaus it struck me as unpretentious. The familiar Fitzroy style shopfront rather than some fluro misfit in the landscape.....(I look at more than just the food...I'll get to that soon).<br/>The internal woodwork lighting and decor struck a chord in me immeadiately.<br/>Natural timber warmed by the sun through the corner window.....and not the usual stuff....The handmade benches tables and complete fit out retain the unpretentious feel but they are are work of love and care.<br/>Now...Here is the important factor.....Love and care....something I find lacking in many establishments but refreshingly it is part of the fibre of Munsterhaus.<br/><br/>After many happy returns to this cafe there is a real consistancy of pleasant greetings and desire to please.<br/>Sometimes it's quiet enough to use their wi-fi or read a book. The staff don't fuss over you there....it's more of a cafe than a restaurant. I've seen a few little changes over the last year as the staff can rotate or change.<br/>The great thing about this cafe is the consistant things you can rely on.<br/>-Friendly staff, Fresh tasty vegetarian food, Proffessional mature chef and well trained food handlers. Some fresh air rather than a stuffy stale joint. Take a jumper or sit near the heater if it's winter.<br/>You can choose whatever food you want from a large variety of dishes. Fresh locally sourced ingredients and tofu from renouned local maker. Wholesome healthy food which makes you feel great. There's spicy dishes if you want ...just ask what's in this? if you're not sure!<br/><br/>Ok ..ANY CRITICS of this place who made a NEGATIVE comment ....<br/>The food here is made with love and care.<br/>The customers are treated with respect and a truely heartfelt desire to provide a comfortable atmosphere for almost anyone to come and enjoy exquisite vegetarian foods at a very affordable range of prices.<br/>The managers are very family orientated and have tuely done their best to cater for requests for more heating, less heating, more toys and space for children, less resources for children, people who tie their dog up in the side street and people who seem to think that it's ok to let their children run around unsupervised in a mixed largely adult cafe environment. Anyone who carrys food or plates in front of them or comes in off the street in busy Fitzroy is not always going to notice a small child. <br/>This place is for everyone so if you love and care for your child , other people or the environment...Please keep your children under your own care , this is not a childminding centre, keep your car or your dog or your bicycle or your skateboard in a safe condition to be considerate of all others in this vibrant district. <br/><br/>Munsterhaus really does cater for everyone.....so much so that they were willing to let me have my own birthday party there a while back.....the whole family enjoyed the food, atmosphere and friendly staff.<br/>Thanks Munsterhaus....Keep up the good work.....I look forward to the little changes you make whilst enjoying the the great food and overall environment which you obviously create with love and care<br/>(From: Food, Cafe and Restaurant critic......Mr Harper).

Delicious food for all the family!. My toddler and I are regulars at Munster Haus and I have to disagree with the earlier post, I find this cafe exceptionally family friendly. There is a broad range of food and treats for me, and for my bub, and there is not a skerrick of eye rolling when I ask for a babycino (which can happen at other cafes). The staff are always very warm and welcoming to my very active (and at times loud!) boy, and a high chair is always available. He is particularly fond of the mandarins with faces on them at the moment :) Its also great for an early dinner on a Friday night.<br/><br/>As a parent with a young child, I am responsible for my child's behaviour, and although this is a lovely and friendly cafe, it is NOT a childcare centre, so I do not expect the room to be baby-proofed nor the staff to police my child's actions in the cafe. So we go when it is quieter so we are less able to bother other customers, and I make sure he keeps out of harms way, as I would in any other public place.<br/><br/>If you like your food fresh, vegetarian/vegan and delicious, then Munsterhaus is a great option - YUM!

Delicious, friendly, good value. The food here is great - excellent variety and really tasty. My family and I come here regularly and the staff are always friendly and look after us well. A great, inexpensive, healthy option for Friday-night-can't-be-bothered-to-cook dinner!

I disagree with the previous review about value for money. I found the serving sizes generous & all selections were fresh & tasty. You'll often find it just as expensive to buy pre made salad/sandwiches that lack the good quality ingredients that Munsterhaus provides. Helpful friendly service. Decent coffee. I'll be back.

Tasty but expensive.. Tasty food, overpriced at $14 a take away container though. I would be willing to pay this if it were organic, but to my knowledge it isn't. Food is often at luke warm temperature which can be frustrating when you see something that would be delicious if it were hot. The staff have always been friendly in my experience.

Poor attitute, unsafe for kids, good food. What a lovely selection of salads and slices. Ordinary over-priced coffee. Kids area which has a kids table with chairs and lovely toys, however, this area had a portable column heater right next to the kids area which is quite dangerous (it was very hot to touch). When I alerted staff to the safety issue (politely) I was given a very poor response about it not really being a kids play area (despite it having a kids table and chairs!) and told it was parents responsibility to look after their children...

Surprisingly empty. I'll admit I did judge this 'book by its cover' when I entered at 1130am on a Saturday and was the only customer in the place.<br/><br/>I'm pleased I felt to guilty to walk straight out though because the food really was very enjoyable and the serving sizes were so generous. The staff were very helpful and friendly and there's no doubt I'll be back.<br/><br/>The only issue I had was with the coffee which was a bit disappointing. I will probably get a coffee from one of the nearby cafes before I go next time, but I'll definitely be back for the delicious food.

Eat here regularly. I do love the food but I have two issues - there is often a lot of chilli and even if they say "it's not hot", it is for some of us! It seems to change from day to day though. Also the prices have gone up a bit, it is now $14 for a take away container. but overall I look forward to my regular lunch here. Really fresh, I have found the staff mostly lovely, there is a kids area with toys and the vegan cupcakes from Mr. Niceguy cupcakes are a nice addition!

If you are a veggie you should love the food. Very tasty and healthy food. You choose the food from a preprepared selection not from a menu. One of my favourite places to have lunch.

Sorry didn't see what all the fuss was about. Pretty ordinary

A bit of an attitude on the service (smile was obviously a big effort), my latte was awful but the cake was good. A bit pricey for a coffee and cake : $9.50 ! The couple next to me had same cake but was offered a scoop of ice cream with it. I did not. I can t comment on the food but it looked fresh. I won t go there again.

Wow!. Stupendously wonderful food. Lovely friendly staff. Lovely decor and atmosphere. Great value for money. <br/>The food is cooked fresh everyday in the morning, so everything is ready around 11am. <br/>I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Having heard a fair bit about this place I have to say I was a little disappointed. I'm sure going in winter is different to summer, but on the whole I found the food, service and actual room temperature on the chilly side. <br/><br/>The hot food from the heated servery was luke warm at best, the salads were quite nice but not hearty enough for this time of year. The service was unsmiling and given that the door was open the entire time it wasn't a very comfortable temperature in cafe. We also left still feeling hungry after purchasing a medium plate each for $13 which given that it was only vegetables could have offered better value in either price or serving size.<br/><br/>The decor is lovely. It just needs a heater, a few smiles, a decent servery and an extra helping to cheer things up.

Healthy fresh food in an enjoyable environment. With a good choice of fresh salads and vegetables, some hot food available plus a choice of cakes, slices and great coffee, Munsterhaus is an enjoyable place to eat for a vegetarian breakfast or lunch. Order by the plate - small, medium or large and takeaway is also available. The cafe also offers a good choice of seating in a well designed place. Enjoy!

*Very* delicious, and I'm not a vegetarian. Something a bit different and special.

Vegie delights!. What can you say about a cafe that serves you deliciously fresh vegetarian food, which feels like you are eating at a friends house that really knows how to cook?! This place is a gem, if you are tired of the traditional bread based cafe food, this place is for you. Not only is it delicious everytime, you can pick and choose your combinations and its YUM. and pete makes a pretty mean dandelion latte!

This is a new cafe that focuses on vegetarian food and prices are by the plate, not by the menu item. They're not scrimpish either, and pile the plate with all the goodies they have on display. The inside of the place is really cute and simplistic, with wooden, vintage furniture and even old school ducks hanging from the wall. It's modest, fresh, and a perfect location for an early lunch. I got the medium plate, which was $12.50, and the items I chose were: tabouli, quinoa salad, chilli beans, tofu salad, glass noodle salad, turmeric cauliflower with a dollop of tofu tahini, with a wedge of cheese foccacia and a mini baguette. First of all, forget about the chilli beans. Maybe it's just me but they really didn't turn me on. Things that were generally good were the tabouli, quinoa salad, foccacia slice and cauliflower. The tofu tahina was really pleasant and sort of reminded me of hommus mixed with sour cr
MEL: HOT OR NOT
I’ll definitely return to Munsterhaus – can’t go wrong with a place that serves fresh, healthy food in whatever combination you like, in whatever quantities you like.
