Review The Fitzroy Pinnacle - North Fitzroy

Beautiful old building. Good value meals. Thursday was $20 steak night! Tasty & generous. Very nice atmosphere. Garden bar out the back. Live music sometimes but not the night we were there.

Got my fix of kangaroo tacos again last night, sooo tasty! I couldn't eat all 3, my friend stole the last one đŸ€€ Staff are all legends, always love coming to visit the Pinny! đŸ–€

I'm so happy the Pinnacle exists. As a queer person I see this as a safe, welcoming space. The crew behind the bar are always keen to have a chat and advise on what's good to drink. The food is great, generous portions and great veg options. The smoking area is under cover and usually occupied by some interesting characters. Considering the queers behind the bar, maybe the pinny should consider a queer night? Drag????? 5 stars all around, good dive bar vibes with tasty wines

A great local of mine. Staff are always great and there's always a good selection of beers. Food is mostly very good. There's been a couple of times recently with small issues like things being too salty, but I'd put that down to all the issues with staffing hospitality at the moment.

Always a good spot for a local catch up. Chilled beer garden with lots of space. The outdoor tables still look onto the old stable door. I'm sure the horses who once waited for happy hour to finish would pop their heads in and have their people hurry their drinks along. Nowadays, it's more our furry friends who sit patiently. Fun staff and a smoothie machine with booze too! What's not to love!

I stopped going here , I live 60 yards away and had hoped it would be my local. A strange mix of possibly the best bar woman and worst bar man ever. Her good attitude, service and sharp, efficient tending is overshadowed by his obnoxious, rushy, unwelcoming attitude, plus he can't clear tables properly, and he discriminates certain groups, it got to the stage where we couldnt be bothered dealing with his shlt. It's bad management really, it's your job to ensure your staff know to make people feel welcome.

Love this pub that is housed in the old post office They only have craft beer on tap, but it's cold and they have other beer in bottles. As a bonus they have gluten free beer

We had a nice time in the Fitzroy Pinnacle. It was warm and cozy inside, relaxed with friendly patrons and staff. We enjoyed the food and bev. Will certainly be back soon.
Monique
This unique and unassuming venue pumps some amazing dishes out of their kitchen. Great when you feel like a snack or for sharing a bunch of small plates

What a great little pub! So much more spacious inside than it appears. They’ve made use of the space really well and there was a chill band playing live music when we got there.
We were seated in the middle of the room which was a little disconcerting, but it wasn’t busy so didn’t feel crowded in. The Parma was ok. A little crispy on the edges and perhaps not enough cheese. Salad wasn’t great, but then, I don’t get a Parma for the salad! They had a good selection of craft beer on tap and reliable sources tell me the ‘ice cream beer’ tastes just like ice cream.
Would recommend.

Finally had the courage to visit here after all these years. This is a fantastic character laden building. Melbourne’s mini flatiron building if you like. I liked the bar very much and it’s a great place to have a drink as I did here today. It was a generous pour too, strong smoky and peaty. I like it here. This might become my bar of choice.

This was an unexpected and delightful surprise - we ducked in here when our plans were interrupted by bucketing rain.
This place is a pub with a typical "Fitzroy" vibe. Low key, comfortable, nothing fancy. They had a good range of beers on tap, but it was my food that was the biggest delight. I had the vegan quinoa dish (I'm not normally a vegan but this looked good) and it was amazing! Tasty, filling, and all round yum! The rest of the menu looked like fairly standard pub fare.
The City Lane
Located in an oddly shaped late 1800s building, The Fitzroy Pinnacle is a pub that exhibits old world charm in more than just its historical facade. Purchased by the current owners in 2006, this former land office, post office, and antique shop has become of of the most loved pubs in the area.

I came to this place not expecting much but I stumbled across the best band. They were called Gentlemane and they were launching their second USB 'The Year of Trip'. It was a beautiful mix of traditional Irish jams and classic rock n roll. Not sure if I will ever come back to the pinnacle but I will make sure to keep listening to Gentlemane.

I'm the cheese steak cook here now and the other night I made one that had chips in it, along with the regular stuff. It was so good. Its not on the menu, so you can't have one as a customer, but i can cause I work here. I guess you could just get a side of chips and assemble it yourself, I can't really stop you once you've purchased it. Just be careful because the chips are hot.

Can't really fault this place. I've enjoyed everything I've gotten off the menu (save the wedges as Im not a wedges fan!). The lamb burger (picture included) is amazing. The patty is so deliciously flavoured. Onions rings on top! They always serve these crinkle cut chips which I dont reallllly like. But the burger fills you up so much so its not the end of the world.
Their specials are creative and generally rock! The salmon cakes are really yummy. The pulled pork sandwish (served on GARLIC NAAN !!!) is so delicious and creative. Yum

Amazing beer selection, fair staff , generally live music and an eclectic crowd.
Parmasofmelbourne
Parmasofmelbourne. The Fitzroy Pinnacle was the location of this weeks parma night. After the last few disappointing weeks, we were absolutely busting for an outstanding parma tonight. The Pinnacle is the sort of place you have driven past so many times but never realised that it was actually a pub. Driving past it always reminded me of New York’s Flatiron building. Walking inside the pinnacle is quite different and strange in a way. The decor is very old and pub like but its often these type of pubs that pump out the best parma’s. Must say, we love pubs like the pinnacle. It also hosts an awesome beer garden.

The Pinnacle offers a special where all mains are priced at $15 every Monday. After a few cheeky gazes back and forth towards the kitchen our parmas came flushing out. We were bloody starving so without delay, we dug in.
Faces lit up round the table. The chicken was fresh, thick, big and juicy. Was pretty much a perfect chook. The crumbing stuck to the chicken like glue sticks to paper. No soggy mess here.
Now i know we rave on about the napoli often but when the napoli is 10/10, we like to make sure you guys know about it. The Pinnacle's napoli was absolutely top notch. Home made and tasty as ever. There was an abundance of napoli as well which was excellent.
The slice of pig did its job just perfect. Smokey and tasty.
The cheese was soft, stringy and grilled to perfection.
The pinnacle served up crinkle cut chips with their parma which was different. Might i add they were awesome. There was also tomato & bbq sauce at our disposal also which went down a treat with the chips.
The salad was excellent. It was fresh and was dressed quite well while the few sneaky cherry tomatoes in there didn't hurt.

We honestly can’t seem to fault anything about the pinnacles parma. The pinnacle uses fresh real chicken, and outstanding home made tasty toppings. The final result is an absolutly delicious parma. So thanks to the pinnacle for satisfying our much needed parma fix. This place is definitely in our top 5. Add this to your list guys, its special. The name sure doesn't lie. This place is The Pinnacle of Fitzroy.

8.5/10

Certainly one of the most oddly shaped pubs in Melbourne (a former post office that became a pub in the late 90s), over the past few years this local watering hole seems to be doing
Sharon
t's an interesting place. There is a unusual mix collectables all over the place, from Stalin books to old style flip open toasters - adding to the charm of this ecletic pub. On top of that, it has great service, great music and really delicious food!
Parma Daze
Walk in the door and its the quintessential Fitzroy pub. Dim lighting, mismatching chairs, decor that looks like it comes from your grandma’s house and patrons that seem to be perpetually competing in a “who can wear the ugliest jumper” competition. When it comes to the beer list, the Pinnacle has hit the nail on the head. Rotating taps of craft beer and staff happy to make recommendations, I sampled the Nail Brewing oatmeal stout and pale ales last night and must say I was delighted with both. There’s also a sizable beer garden out the back with a separate bar and what seemed to be a stage setting up for some live Thursday tunes. Was a bit of a brisk evening so opted to sit inside, but on a warm Sunday afternoon I could easily see chilling in the beer garden over a cold one.
Gawk With A Fork
Great pub. The food is always good with new dishes every week, rotating beer taps every week. Only negative is the rude washed up looking pirate with a bad attitude behind the bar. Fire him and this place is A+

Happy Australia Day!!!. Almost 6 years in Australia and I have had such a positive experience here...until I walked into the pinnacle to be greeted by a arrogant belligerent barman who looks like Russell brand after 10 years on ice.
After being told the 'correct' lingo to use in Australia and being laughed at...we were ignored for 20 mins while he served Aussies! I genuinely love and respect this country...such a shame that some people have a genuine hatred for 'outsiders' as this man does.
Happy 'Australia' day!!

Don't bother anymore. I agree with Kimberely below- the food and atmosphere used to be great, now the staff don't care or smile and the food is terrible. I have also been going to the Pinny just like Old Mate below, but if a mate treated me with the disrespect the staff here do, i'd dump that friend really quickly. All of you are pretty up yourselves and don't have a reason to be!!

Staff party!. Big thanks to the Pinnacle for hosting our staff Christmas party last night! We had a great time. Most of us had never visited before and we'll be back for sure. Staff were so accommodating and it was overall a top notch night.

What happened to steak night! It used to be killer and last week we got a sad slither of beef. Please bring it back to its former glory!
Philip_mccurley
Very very average. I had the duck dish on Saturday night. It was salty to the point of being almost inedible. The waitress was stroppy and offered nothing in compensation.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS, there are many better options nearby.

Oh man. A few years ago, the food here used to be amazing. Now? Not so much. It's either overseasoned or just plain mediocre. It bums me out that this pub used to be great.

A must. Its that unusual triangular pub on the corner - we kept driving by ... and then we finally parked and went in - and what an Alladdins cave - cosy, rustic, open fire, delicious food, great beers on tap, quality wines by the glass, great service, and live music in the courtyard. Great Fitzroy North vibe. Bring it on. ( Reading earlier comments make us wonder if something may have changed in recent times for the better, as we only felt good vibes - it gets our highly recommend flag - we will return again very soon and will spread the word).

Great food and lovely atmosphere. Excellent courtyard in summer.
Staff need lengthy training in customer service, however. The male bartender with the long brown hair also seems to have medical issue causing eye-rolling at multiple customers that he may want to get checked. Really sours a great establishment.

Delicious food, lovely mulled wine...BUT. The ambiance is lovely. Food is always delicious, but there is this one guy at the bar who is always aggravated and very unwelcoming to patrons. Let's just say, he wears a smile on his shirt but never on his face.

Great Pub, Terrible Bar Staff!. Have been here a few times now, Everytime is the same.. completely in love with the place, Great food, Excellent set up. However, the Bar Staff are so aweful, they are Rude, Sarcastic and generally unfriendly, makes ordering a drink something you fear doing... management really need to assess this, or im afraid the place will be ruined..... :(
Arthur Daily
Excellent food and reasonable price. But try to avoid the hipster pirate behind the bar, you'd have a friendlier response with a injured grizzly bear.

This is a great local bar, where staff great customers by name and are always super friendly, not to mention outrageously good-looking. The beer selection is incredibly vast. The food portions are huge, yummy and very reasonably priced. Very laid back atmosphere with good vibes.

I really feel for the owner since the bar staff are running this place into the ground. Not many redeeming qualities about this place, least of all the pathetic service. Completely agree with the comments below. Some advice from a local? Don't waste your time or money.

Long time pinnacle lover! Have been coming here since just before current owners took over (7ish years? ). When you come here regularly it's like having your own sitcom. Staff are very friendly, I have made great friends here. The music is what really sets this place apart though, afternoon beer garden sessions featuring a relative who's who of jazz/blues Australian legends. Match all that with some sunshine, a pint from their crafty selection and meal from the specials board and you're in pub utopia!
A locals local where everyone knows your name.

Great little bar. What a fantastic little bar. Lovely selection of beers and friendly staff who are always smiling and willing to chat to you about the beers they have on tap. I had the pie. It was delicious. I would recommend checking out this place and will be bringing my friends here in the future.

Crap. This place has really gone downhill, as a local I used to be proud to show new peeps my local secret digs, but of late this place is embarrassing to call my local. Bad food, rude staff, smelly old local bar flys that sneer at you and chainsmoke. It must have changed hands of late as nothing is what it used to be, no warm friendly greetings when u order a drink - (just a lot of eye rolling & sighs) and the food is like rubber. The music is too loud in the beer garden so not worth venturing out there as only good music should be that loud. All the staff seem disinterested & above it all, but there's nothing to be above! It's a shame my little local turned into such a shithole, even the locals seem over it. Go to the newry if you're in the area, at least you might get a smile out of someone.

Old mate. Been coming to this humble space for a while now and honestly i feel the below comments are a tad extreme and uncouth to say the least...i feel a lot of modern pubs/venues are chasing what this place has-warmth.
Well priced and balanced drink selections, interesting and memorable music and not to mention the people-the locals are what keep this place ticking over...consistent meals and decent staff are the cornerstone for any venue and this is their strong points-get to know people and spend more time investing in whats in front of you!
a seriously strong spot in the north with charm and character...

ps:if your unsatisfied with a modern gent chain smoking maybe stand a few paces away from him.

What happed to the old Pinnacle.. Good points below regarding the bar staff.

I think it is a real shame, this pub used to be really nice, there used to be great DJ's with fun 80's tracks on a Friday night with smiles to go with, great friendly bar staff, and good food. Unfortunately the pub now seems to have none of these.

An angry, anti-social, chain-smoking/drinking DJ who mocks with Friday-night beer garden in attendance with random ambiguous music choices clearly only for his own entertainment (basically crap), rude and incompetent bar staff who can't do their jobs properly and are extremely unpleasant to deal with and look at (bring back the old bar staff or get some that actually care about their jobs and take care of the place and the customers), and a menu that seems to keep changing in both quality and consistency - possibly reflecting turnover in kitchen staff, again not a good sign.

Like Michael Jackson said, I'm gonna make a change, ah, for once in my life.

No one appreciates a rude bartender idley stuffing her face with Doritos while having a chat and making a point not to serve me. I cannot remember the last time I have been served by such rude staff members. This pub used to be great but I would defiantly only come here if all the other pubs in Melbourne had burnt down.
Anonymous
Insolent bar staff. I can't recall when it became acceptable to treat customers like rubbish for no apparant reason. It must have been some time ago at the Pinnacle as every time I've been there of late the rude bar staff make it such an unpleasant experience. It really doesn't take much to be friendly to people... but I guess that would be a little passé for this hipster joint.

Pub country meal fare. Awsum

Group dinner. After being served by an extremely rude bartender who gave me so so much attitude that i became flustered and didnt complete my drink order, i felt to intimidated to go to the bar for the rest of the night. But i was slightly happier to learn she was doing the same to other members of the group i was with...well at least it wasnt personal.
The calamari was similar to overly crumbed deepfryed rubber and coated in so much aoli that i couldnt eat it.
Overall a terrible experience and i will never return which is a shame as it was a birthday dinner regular spot for my friends and i.

Don't bother! Much better eats on st George's/ Brunswick street. After sending back snapper for being WELL OVER DONE, we could have been given the same piece of fish a second time, again, tough, rubbery and looking like chicken. INEDIBLE, and cold!! Unfortunatly the apologetic staff can't make up for this, we won't be back.
Makanmakanan
I like this place. If you want a huge pub meal and some nice tunes you should come here. It isn't the best pub food but it is cheap and the food is decent.
Deborah Astling
Poor standard of choice of food
Bennie Addict
Great for a lazy afternoon in the sun. Grab a decent tap beer, wade through the hipster mess, and hope you can find a seat in the lovely courtyard
Joeyjoejoejuniorshabadoo
Simple pleasures. Don't get your hopes up - the food here is basic, but it's okay. Ordered the barramundi and it was pretty much a pan-fried piece of fish, with chips, coleslaw and a half-hearted attempt at 'fusion' with a pointless kimchi side. My husband seems to fare better when it comes to ordering, the beef bourguignon pie got his thumbs up.
But hey, on a Monday night eating in Fitzroy for $14 ain't bad, and I do like the atmosphere here. The Pinnacle seems to be overlooked by many but it's quite cosy and we like the beergarden.

Gone down hill. This was our favourite local pub to come to and the food was amazing, a well kept secret! About 6 months ago they told us the chef was left and they were looking for a new one (until then there was only a 1 page simple menu knocked up by the kitchen hand) after a few months they still hadn't found a chef, we returned 3 times in the past few months now that they have a new chef and each time - very disappointed with the food, bad pub food that was barely editable. we have only returned for beers since as they have a great selection and the staff are always friendly. Pity about the food..

Food = awesome, vibe = nice, staff = friendly, music = good but TOO LOUD!!! Couldn't hear myself think!
Petesalad
Awesome place, great food, nice staff, good music... But the music is way too loud on Wednesday nights.

Good pub food.. sometimes. Eating here 4 times with my partner so thats 8 meals ive goten to see. had the pork belly ..awsome! both the chicken and egg plant parmas are great! ..had one special off the board and it was a well over cooked over priced deep fried fish n potato cake meal with crap salad ...WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED! ..the fish n chip shop would have done better and was so supprised after the few runs ive had with there food but that wont stop me going back to eat.

the bands are way too loud for there tiny court yard ..not only cant you speak your often deafend by the bands which is not a pleasent dining experience for the 5.30-7pm dining slot which is confusing why they dont have them playing post 7pm?

but over all a great non pretentious pub and good food and good tap beer.
The Eater
Not quite the Pinnacle. So after watching my friends eat what looked to be amazing meals (beef snitz and gnocchi), I the rest of us decided to order.
First thing to note, on the menu the is a "burger bar" but there is no real burgers on it.... Sure theres 2 chicken ones, a steak sandwich, a couple of wraps but no actual burger. You know, beef patty, cheese letuce etc. Couldn't quite understand that...

But anyway, I order the chicken breast burger and it was terrible! You know its a bad burger when the best thing is the bun and you end up pulling it apart and just eating the bun.... Dry chicken breast with the skin still on, blah! Chips were average. Disapointing!

My friends ordered the cheese saginaki and it was way too salty! They didnt finish it either.

On the other hand, bar staff friendly and helpful. I asked for a beer recomendation and they were spot on :)

Shame about the food.......
Rachel Doller
Great pub and atmosphere but bar staff are so rude. Made me feel very uncomfortable.

Ba Bow. The porterhouse schnitzel was amazing, however the side of oily roasted vegetables and confusingly copious amounts of coriander were awful. Decided to give them another shot and returned the next night. The $12 rare steak was cooked perfectly but again the sides were truly awful and kasundai plus gravy was an odd mix. Thank god the Great Northern kitchen re opens this week ...
Larry
The Pinnacle. Great place, great food, we absolutely love it. Plus there is plenty of unrestricted parking in nearby Taplin Street. Parking is a rarity when eating out in North Fitzroy.

Monday & Tuesday. Really good food for cheap on these nights.
I was really thin and my doctor said I need to eat more and do a little exercise so I started eating at the Pinnacle a couple of times a week and now I'm putting on weight. I try to ride my bike there but this cold weather makes it hard to change habits you see.
