I dined here last week for my birthday and what an experience! I heard this place was amazing but to experience this beautiful authentic Italian treasure for myself was something else. We ordered some starters, the truffle gnocchi and a variety of pizzas. The starters were divine! Crisp bruschetta and other delicious goodies. The gnocchi melted in my mouth, the flavours exploded on my taste buds, I was in heaven! Then the pizzas came out, from the tomato to the mozzarella, everything about it was delicious. The service was exceptional! The vibe was warm and inviting. If you want an authentic Italian experience and the pleasure of eating delicious flavoursome Italian food made my Italians, this is your place! You won’t be disappointed!

Melbournes North has an array where of Italian restaurants so I thought I’d see what Piccolino has to offer. Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options available.
🍽 antipasto misto to start which featured bruschetta, croquettes, olives and torta al testo. The torta al testo are flat breads filled with salami, vegetables and cheese. They are a definite go to! The pasta and pizza are all handmade onsite and you can defintately tell. Soft pillowy gnocchi made from seasonal ingredients is a must as well as the wide range of pizzas. We had the melanzana pizza and tried the spag bowl. All exceptional!
DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR; RUN HERE
We walked into Piccolino mesmerized by the open kitchen and inviting woodfire oven. It was only just after they had opened and we had an abundance of choice of where to sit.
The weather was amazing; sunny and just warm enough to sit outside and enjoy an Aperol Spritz… or 10.
We were lucky to be served by the owner, Andrea, who was most knowledgeable, super funny and sooo welcoming. We felt really confident that we were happy for him to choose for us what to eat. And it was a great decision. He can also be your cheese bae - if you watched our stories on Insta, you know!
We started off with an antipasto platter – think truffle cheese, olives in a cheese bowl (wow), suppli with lemon butter and the highlight of the dish – torta al testo – homemade bread with cheese and prosciutto – amazing. They have even imported a special oven from Perugia to make these. Super unique.
The pasta is the freshest you can have – the gnocchi are made with ricotta and they are the fluffiest most delicious pieces of heaven you could ever have.
Finish off your dinner with a delicious nutella panacotta. It seriously packs a lot of flavor.
*At the time of this review, we have visited again twice – hehe.
Such a great place to enjoy a spritz and nice Italian food!
We had some marinated olives and Suppli Della Settimana which is a deep fried croquette filled with the chef’s daily fresh ingredients to start.
What was most interesting was the ‘Torta Al Testo’ - this is an Umbrian flat bread filled with salumi, veggies and Italian cheese! This is an authentic dish straight from the head chef’s home city, Perugia. You can’t really find this anywhere else, and it’s really nice!
Their pasta is cooked beautifully and our pizza, the Italian Stallion, was so delicious!
Service was amazing, Andrea the owner and head chef is very welcoming!
Melbourne is spoilt for choice when it comes to different cuisines from all over the world—from Japanese and South American, to Ethiopian! But there’s nothing quite like Italian cuisine and the aperitivo hour—the happiest and yummiest of hours. Piccolino in North Fitzroy brings their Perugia-inspired goods with a new aperitivo menu to be enjoyed as a casual after-work snack with colleagues, a pre-dinner bite with loved-ones or simply the start to a relaxing night ahead.
Italian head chef and business partner Andrea Fioriti has led Piccolino in a new direction, challenging the boundaries of a typical trattoria dining experience. What’s a trattoria? you ask while simultaneously googling it. It’s an Italian-style eatery that’s a little less formal than a restaurant but more formal than an osteria (which is sort of like a wine bar). Fioriti’s ‘what’s fresh today’ philosophy offers traditional Italian food that’s both seasonal and made in-house including their weekly rotating pasta, gnocchi and hand-stretched, 72-hour wood-fired pizza. The new space is also brighter and quirkier than ever with splashes of yellow and pizza boards with cheeky mantras hanging off the walls. Read: ‘Eat pasta run fasta’; ‘In crust, we trust’; and ‘Gnocchi yourself out’.
Their standout aperitivo dish is the torta al testo—warm flat bread filled with grilled veggies, fresh burrata and salumi. This Umbrian specialty dates back to the Roman empire when it was originally cooked on large disc bricks called ‘a testo’. You’ll also find the classics, like bruschetta and mixed antipasti, and refreshing spritz on tap to wash it all down (hello Friday night drinks!).
Of course, there are pastas and pizzas aplenty: spaghetti bolognese, tagliatelle carbonara, gnocchi (handmade by 77-year old Nonno Gaetano—bless!), risotto and ALL the pizzas. Pizza favourites include the Italian Stallion and the Piggie White, as well as the Melanzana—eggplant heaven.
But I can’t possibly choose between pasta and pizza! you cry in desperation. Settle petal. Piccolino’s got you covered with the Spag Bowl pizza: spaghetti Bolognese served in a hand-crafted edible pizza bowl. Genius!
They fed us pasta on a bread plate. What more can you ask for? Brilliant idea and yummy food
My friend and I visited Piccolino last night, we shared the anti-pasto misto and for our mains we ate the Spaghetti Clams and the Gnocci Alla Norma. The place has such an amazing and comfortable vibe, we really enjoyed our time there. The best thing is, its not just a pizza shop! We absolutely loved our delicious pasta dishes and we can't wait to go back. Our new regular!
I came to Piccolino after the restaurant has been renovated and the menu updated.
For the first time in Melbourne I had a pigeon pasta and it was incredibly tasty and felt like if the ragu was freshly made.
Quality food and really welcoming atmosphere.
Definitely worth a try!
This trendy pizza joint definitely has the locals coming back for delicious and authentic style Italian food! We enjoyed a platter of delicious starters, then the pastas and pizza were served. The pastas are made fresh depending on the produce that week, which I love! Pizza is made fresh on site, with fresh and authentic ingredients! Highly recommend coming in for some Italian food or even takeaway for a movie night!
We recently checked out piccolino ! A local pizza and gnocchi bar in Fitzroy North serving SUPER authentic dishes with really good quality ingredients. You'll hear them shouting orders in Italian to each other, the vibe is family friendly and fun ☀️🙌 What we loved ❤️:
Antipasti:
- Warmed marinated olives
- Torta al testo with prosciutto and mozzarella
- Suppli (Italian rice ball) with bolognese served w a side of garlic aioli
Mains:
🍕 The pizza obviously! Our favorite is the capriccosa with amazing fresh basil & mozzarella
🍝 House made ricotta gnocchi w sautéed truffle mushroom. The gnocchi was SO soft and pillowy 😍 and who can resist truffle anything?!?
🍝 The Tagliatelle with fresh salmon, a touch of cream & chopped parsley was also very delicious 👌👌 Can't wait to come back to try more of their pizzas
A welcoming Italian restaurant in the north of Fitzroy, Piccolino Woodfired Pizzeria is serving up house made woodfired pizza and freshly house made pasta and gnocchi to locals and non-locals alike. Hailing from Perugia, one of the owners that we met has a flare for hospitality with his friendly nature and attractively thick Italian accent.
With only a few tables available for seating, the small venue suits the local and authentic style of this trattoria. The menu is similarly focused, a selection of appetisers and pizza to choose from, as well as a handful of house made pasta sauces available to be chosen that vary each day depending on seasonality of the produce. You can choose your pasta sauce to be cooked with spaghetti, tagliatelle, gnocchi or risotto... with vegan and vegetarian options available upon request.
Any fun Italian meal must start with an Aperol Spritz and some aperitifs... and Piccolino did not disappoint with this! We were presented with the Antipasto Misto, which comes with a chef's choice of mixed appetisers on a board. All were absolutely delicious, with the standout being the unique Torta al Testo, which is a tiny Umbrian flat bread sandwich filled with salumi, salad and Italian cheese. Although not very large in size and only just capable of sharing, the crispy thin texture of the flat bread perfectly complimented the Italian flavours of the traditional fillings. As explained by one of the owners, this produce is not found anywhere else in Melbourne, and is a popular aperitif in Perugia, Italy.
The pizza is nicely woodfired and thin, with our choice of the Italian Stallion delivering on flavour and a hint of spice.
The pasta was equally delicious, with all of their spaghetti, risotto and gnocchi cooked perfectly to al dente texture, and the flavours of those on offer on the day of our visit encompassing depth as well as freshness within each bite.
We were not presented with any desserts on this visit, hence my desire to try a tiramisu at each Italian restaurant I visit was not fulfilled, unfortunately. But based on our experience and the quality of food and hospitality that we received, this is definitely a local Italian restaurant that must be frequented if you enjoy authentic Italian food full of flavour, and want to feel like you are in Italy without needing to leave the country.

The EatPlayLive team were invited to try out the revamped menu at Piccolino's. They’ve had a refresh since we last visited, with a new owner on board, a new Head Chef, updated menu and most importantly a new woodfired pizza oven!
The staff here are always warm and welcoming and make you feel like you’re in a relaxed Trattoria somewhere in Italy. Their Jam is Aperitivo for $15, daily from 5.30-7pm. You’re treated to a Chef’s selection tasting plate with beer or tap wine. They also have Spritz on tap which is pretty cool.
We sampled a lovely selection of authenticly made torta al testo, bruschetta, house made pasta and gnocci, and of course a delicious woodfired pizza. The ingredients were all fresh and tasty and I was really impressed with the pizza dough – so light and crisp and the mushroom and truffle flavours really sung. You can really tell the difference with wood fired oven. The stand out for me was the gnocci, soft and delicate it melted in my mouth and I could easily have eaten my body weight!
This is an awesome authentic Italian trattoria and we highly recommend you stop in for a while.
Thanks for having us!
I recently attended the launch of the new menu at Piccolino which has been inspired by a fantastic kitchen makeover and the installation of a woodfired pizza oven. Head chef Andrea has created a fabulous menu inspired in part by his Umbrian heritage. The restaurant is small with an open kitchen, but has a comfortable vibe and the lovely staff make you instantly feel welcome. The walls are lined with pizza paddles, neon signs and a huge mural; giving the patrons a little taste of Italy.
There is a well stocked bar, and Piccolino is a venue that stocks Tap Wines; a concept of wines and Aperol Spritz on tap. I love this concept, and can see myself enjoying several beverages over Apertivo hour here.
We got to try a delicious array of Italian starters, pastas and pizza. The suppli were a version of arancini. Flavoured with parmesan; they went so well with their accompanying tomato relish. The Torta al Testo are an Umbrian flatbread sandwich that are served with a variety of delicious fillings. The eggplant version was particularly good.
A perfectly cooked tagliatelle bolognese was just like Mama makes, and the mushroom gnocchi was my standout dish. I could eat this every day, and be happy forever. The pizza is out of this world. The dough is unbelievable, with a 72 hour proving process. The wood fire adds that authentic char to the base, and all the toppings were sublime. It is easily the best pizza I've had in a long while.
Piccolino has that chilled, homely vibe that just makes you feel like you are dining with family. Fabulous food and drink, a traditional menu and gorgeous staff make this trattoria a must visit.
I was lucky enough to attend Piccolino’s celebration of their new wood-fired oven, and got to sample many of their offerings. The venue is cozy and cute, and I love the open kitchen where you can watch the chefs in action.
My favourites of the night were definitely the truffle pizza and the Suppli, which was kind of like an arancini. The pizza base was crispy, chewy and just the perfect texture.
The staff are all so friendly and energetic too. Overall a really lovely Italian restaurant!
Thank you for having me!
Piccolino has had a revamp with a brand spanking new woodfire oven and a new spring menu. So now is the perfect time for apertivo!. Piccolino Pizza & Gnocchi Bar - aperol spritz. Apertivo is like happy hour but with food as well. Piccolino is doing a share plate of food (chef’s selection) and a beer or TAP wine for $15 or paired with an aperol spritz for an extra $5 which is really good value.

These guys take their pizzas seriously, they now have a new chef, new menu and most importantly a new wood fire pizza oven. Had the privilidge to attend their new makeover and i was really impressed with the menu and decor.
They strive to serve their customers traditional trattoria style with a modern touch to it. All pizza and pastas are made with love in house and the pizza dough goes through a 72 hour levitation process to ensure they have the right texture and consistency.
We got to try a few chef selection pizza made freshly in front of us and they were amazing. From the textures and consistency to the toppings everything was on point. The truffle pizza was my absolute favourite. It was so fragrant and the textures were so good.
Moving on to the pasta, we had the gnocchi with mushroom truffles and tagliatelle alla bolognese and they were good. The pasta was al dente perfection and the sauce went really well together.
They focus on ensuring their customers have a good time and enjoy their meal when they’re here. Be sure to visit them to get your ultimate pizza fix
Attended the launch party here the other night and was able to try so many delicious pizzas and pastas!
The pasta was made fresh right in front of us and cooked in their new wood fire oven- that crust was so delicious and that truffle oil pizza was my favourite one!
I also really enjoyed that truffle oil gnocchi too! It was super soft and melted in my mouth!
We were invited to a spring party at Piccolino last night and delighted in the fruit of their newly installed wood fired oven. We had some seriously yummy pizza and also got to try various other menu items including our first experience of suppli which is essentially like an arancini.
We also had pasta and torta al testo which is an Umbrian flatbread sandwich and also something exciting and new to our tastebuds. The addition of new partner to the business Andrea who is also the head chef and hails from Umbria puts a new delicious twist on the food and brings us unique and different dishes to enjoy.
Original review
I was thrilled to be invited to the brand new Piccolino pizza and gnocchi bar. This is a cosy little restaurant specialising in the aforementioned Italian classics with a little twist. Think your traditional potato or ricotta variant of gnocchi but also pumpkin gnocchi or beetroot.
We spoke to owner Anthony who really hit the nail on the head. He said the Melbourne food scene is already so advanced there’s no need to try and constantly elevate that, so just do yummy food in a relaxed environment and have fun.
The New York raised pizza chef certainly delivered a delicious pizza in the eggplant parm. If you’re feeling adventurous they also offer a French fry pizza! The gnocchi for me wasn’t as strong as the pizza. We had the house Napoli and with a minimalist sauce like that there’s really nowhere to hide. I found there wasn’t enough sweetness in the sauce which suggested maybe it hadn’t been reduced down enough.
If you can’t decide between pizza and pasta however they also do spaghetti in a pizza dough bowl which is pretty exciting, but I’ve seen that one before. For me the real creativity came in the form of dessert. Their pastry chef Alissa conceptualised a lemon and blueberry gnocchi dish with coconut and pistachio. Of course it’s not really gnocchi but the illusion of little balls of dough made to look as such.
This was a very clever and unique dish and she confesses she had made a pact with the owner to steer clear of Nutella on their dessert menu. Having eaten more then my fair share of Nutella pizzas I think this is an inspired idea and had my husband been more of a willing participant to the calorie party rather then a steadfast dieter I also would have ordered her version of the dessert pizza. I’ll definitely be trying it next time-berries in a cocktail of pimms atop white chocolate on heart shaped dough sounds pretty bloody perfect to me
Piccolino makes excellent proper Italian pizza with lovely fresh ingredients. The staff are super accommodating and kind. Excellent for families, highly recommend.
Lovely local Italian place specializing in gnocchi. Welcomed difference. Current opening special includes free Peroni or TAP drinks with any pizza! Bonus. Spag bowl was interesting and certainly did feature the dough bowl which had an amazing texture. Enough to warrant a return visit try a real pizza. Gnocchi was lovely so would love to try the other types. Generous portion. Dessert was underwhelming and rather pricey. The gnocchi puffs were a lovely texture, warm and would be a delight to eat with the beautiful lemon curd had there been ice cream. Some sweetness. The portion was too big and limited flavours on the plate made it boring. All the garnish were insufficient. Do ask for ice cream when trying this dessert.
Staff were helpful and friendly, service was prompt. Delicious fresh gnocchi and tasty pizzas. Highly recommended checking it out. I’ll be back.
I recently came back from Florence and the Amalfi Coast and came to eat here as the pizzas just looked amazing on their Instagram and my wife and I were craving. I can honestly hand-on-heart say that the pizza here is better than anything I had overseas (Example: Florence's famous Gusto Pizza, the White Pizza at Villa Verde Capri... you name it!). I hardly ever write reviews but I felt this place deserved it. Seriously incredible stuff here which I highly recommend trying. Must haves: - the Prosecco on tap is amazing. Dough pockets to start. Capricciosa Pizza although I'm confident all are elite. Gnocchi /w Burnt Butter, Goats Cheese & Sage
Cute little pizza and gnocchi bar. We got the gnocchi which was fresh and tasty.
Service was friendly. Young wait staff and could tell they were new - but sweet and welcoming. BYO which is great.
Delicious, fresh and homely Italian food. The dough balls are salty, crispy yet soft on the inside - they are absolutely addictive! The gnocchi is light and soft and the Napoli sauce is well seasoned and delicious. The pizzas are traditionally Italian with a thin base. The service is great, really friendly and prompt. Definitely worth a visit! Can’t wait to return again!
We had the potato gnocchi with burnt butter and the mushroom pizza. Both were amazing. The chilli they offer you is fresh green and red chilli slices preserved in oil which i hadn't had before at an italian place but it was really awesome with the pizza and pasta, no other place is going to be the same now! Staff were super friendly and it was extremely busy. We were sat at the bar which was absolutely fine because the bartender was such a lad and whipped up some great cocktails for us. Will be back.

Piccolino is such an amazing pizza and gnocchi bar. The woodfired pizza dough was top notch, one of the best in Melbourne. We got to try the porchetta pizza, potato gnocchi with creamy mushroom and truffle oil. They were both delicious and we can't wait to go back to eat them again. For dessert, we had the sticky date pudding, which we really enjoyed as well.
We are an absolute fan of Italian food, and Piccolino has definitely modernised Italian cuisine at its finest. We started off with the Salumi platter which had a fresh selection of cured meats served alongside the most glorious donut like pizza pocket which was a big highlight for us! It really had the texture of a denser donut but was savoury instead of being sweet.
We then had the ricotta gnocchi with the creamy mushroom and truffle oil which was super soft and fluffy that was smothered in a delicious creamy sauce! Next we had the Porchetta pizza, which showcased their ability to create really tasty dough! Surprisingly the pork & fennel sausage and the caramelised onion was a real highlight on this pizza! We saw the crazy spag bowl where the spag bol was in a dough bowl and had to order it! With this combo, don't eat each alone, eat the dough and the spaghetti together and the real flavours are brought out in the best that way.
We were super stuffed by this point, but we couldn't go past the desserts and had to order two of them. We insist that we have a second stomach just for desserts! So we had the Banana split and the Sticky date! The sticky date would have to be my favorite because the homemade accents like the caramel date, the pudding and dough was so decadent put together that really finished off the meal nicely!
The servings are generally quite big, so the desserts are best shared as they are also served generously!
Highly recommend this place if you want to have a nice night out with some great people, eating delicious Italian food!
