Review Via Della Spiga Restaurant - North Sydney

What a great little place. Wonderfully friendly and authentic service by the owner, nice atmosphere with the music. Food was also very enjoyable. Even our son commented how he could tell his pizza was made of fresh ingredients (compared to other run of the mill pizzas) and was keen to go back again. Lasagne felt like it could do with a bit more meet, not in my top 10 but was still enjoyable and fresh. Lamb shoulder was also very nice and fell of the bone.

Great pizzas, friendly serving staff that care about diners having a good experience from start to finish. Food envy with every plate that came out. Order off the menu and get an affogato with the mocha gelato in place of the traditional vanilla.

Had such a lovely experience dining in this restaurant. Such a beautiful atmosphere and the food is really nice very hearty and cooked with love. It is really hard to find family own buissines and it hits home. Ordered the beef lassangna and it was divine pulled beef and the grilled cheese ontop was to die for. Would highly recommend trying this dish if you are in the area. Location wise it is right next to North Sydney station very convenient. Would come here again.

I wasn't very happy that my reservation was cancelled at the last minute. However, I got a call from the owner/manage explaining the circumstances. We can't wait to try the food here. So far, they care about their business and their customers. Excellent service .

Sign on door says opens at 5:30pm. Doors still locked. Customers waiting out the front but no owner to open the doors. Surly woman opens the door says fully booked. Like how long do you think I’m going to stay for lady? NO-ONE in the restaurant, at most I’ll be 50 minutes. Lost us and other customers right there and then.

Four of us dined on a busy Saturday night in February. We started off with a couple of refreshing Peronis and a glass of Prosecco. For starters, we shared the chicken, spinach and mozzarella arancini balls ($13), salt and pepper squid ($10) and a rocket salad ($17). That was all fresh and tasty and a great way to start the meals. For my main course, I choose the spaghetti bolognese with ragu and pecorino cheese ($25). The others all choose fish dishes, including the salmon with a leafy green salad ($33), seafood linguine ($26) and a “cacciucco alla livornese” ($29) which is a seafood medley with toasted bread. My pasta was cooked “al dente” just the way I like it, with a flavoursome meat sauce and sprinkled with tasty cheese. My wife’s salmon was succulent and tasty, well complemented by a serve of nutritious salad. The other dishes also went down well and everyone enjoyed their meals. Portion sizes were generous. For dessert, we shared a gelato ($7) and a cheese cake ($12), they were sweet and creamy; the perfect way to end the evening. This is a family owned and run restaurant and it shows. The owners have clearly put in a lot of effort into creating a pleasant dining experience. They care about their guests, and the result is a warm and homely place, where you’ll be made to feel welcome the moment you walk in the door. In fact even before you arrive you’ll start to feel the love. If, like us, you’ve made a booking, Jennifer, the owner will give you a courtesy call a few hours prior, to confirm your booking. That was a nice touch, and also saved me the trouble of confirming the booking myself. And they’re obviously doing something right, because the place is popular with the locals. We had an early 6.30pm booking and we were the first diners, but within an hour or so it was a full house. Despite that, acoustics are good and we were easily able to converse. The interior has been tastefully decked out in a soothing cream colour scheme, with simple but comfortable wooden furniture, flower pots on the ceiling and some colourful wall posters, to give it a bright and cheery vibe. Service was polite and attentive, although if I had one suggestion to these folk, it would be to roster an extra staff member on busy nights. Our drinks and starters came out quickly enough, but then followed a rather long and tedious wait of about 30 minutes for the mains. I accept that everything is freshly cooked and that sometimes takes time, and it was, as I mentioned, fairly busy, but still, for me at least, quick service is always a pleasure. With a generous 50% discount off the food, from TheFork, we paid a reasonable $111 for three drinks, two starters, a salad, four mains and two desserts. That was excellent value for money. There’s a single unisex toilet at the back. It was clean and well stocked, although the 1980s hand dryer could do with an upgrade. Via della Spiga is conveniently located next door to the North Sydney train station on Blue Street. Parking in the near vicinity can be a little tricky, although we managed to find something near the Coles on Walker Street where there are no weekend restrictions. Overall, I liked this little restaurant. It’s a cheerful and friendly place, with a relaxed and casual atmosphere. The food is fresh and tasty, and served in decent portions and the prices are reasonable. Service was tad slow on a busy Sat night, but despite that, this place is worth a return visit.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEIR PIZZA AND PASTA. I’ve only ever tried their pizza (came highly recommended) but finally tried their pasta too! The pizza base is light, thin and oh so crispy. It’s better than some of the pizza’s I had in Italy.

I'm taking advantage of The Fork festival where you can get 50% off your bill at selected restaurants across Sydney. I couldn't believe it at first but didn't question this amazing perk. I've been using TheFork (previously Dimmi) for a while now and I'm a huge fan!. I caught up with my foodie bestie over pizza and pasta at Via Della Spiga. The pizza came highly recommended and I've since heard, their pasta as well. I can definitely agree with both - the pizza base is so thin and crispy (my favourite) with the perfect amount of toppings. I dare say the pizza from Via Della Spiga was better than some pizza's we tried in Italy.

Fun and yummy. This place isn't fancy but it is good. The lunch menu is incredible value and the owners remember EVERYTHING from one visit to the next. Relax, have some unpretentious pasta, pizza or salad and some delicious wine or imported beer.

Service was friendly and prompt. I ordered a pizza and thought it was sensational. However I then ordered a dessert (like a mouse cake) and to me it was not fresh or nowhere near the same quality. I would certainly go back but purely for the pizza. Very convenient location
Margherita
Their menu said small pizza so I ordered a bruschetta as well, just to be safe. I liked the latter, drenched as it was in olive oil and garlic. The veggie pizza had all the promised toppings but tasted sad, anyone who's had bad takeout pizza knows what that is. It was also a big 10" pizza. Count me lucky I guess :-/

Tiny pizzas (smaller than advertised), sky high prices, and low quality ingredients leave much to be desired. My experience was very similar to Steph Y's post. When I asked the owner why the pizza was so small they claimed it was because the dough shrinks - mate, I don't care what the pizza does while it's cooking. If you want to sell me something that claims to be 10" its up to you to make sure that it's actually 10". My advice to any potential customers would be to get a frozen pizza from Woollies instead.
Thebrokefoodie_
Ordered a 10" pizza - what actually arrived was much smaller than advertised (was closer to 9" - see attached image below (the extra part measured to 1", bringing the total diameter close to 9" rather than 10"). Might not sound like a lot, but that's almost 20% of the pizza missing. Phoned the manager to submit a complaint and ask for a refund and was met with hostility. Owner told me to "get Domino's next time", very unprofessional.

But was the pizza itself good? I should mention that it cost $19.50. The amount of topping given was very stingy, and the salmon did not taste fresh. The sauce has not be spread with any kind of care, just plopped on. In addition, it was cold when it arrived.

Unfortunately I can't recommend this place, I would suggest any potential customers take the owner's advice and "get Domino's instead".

Got the smallest margarita pizza known to man (10" in diameter) + a pelligrino for a whopping $30!! Are you guys crazy?!?! The pizza was below average. Crust was thick on one side and thin on the other with about an inch of cheese on top and zero flavour. Never ever again. Silly me!!
The RnB Diary
Situated right by North Sydney Station, Via Della Spiga seems to inspire confidence in down-to-earth no frill honest Italian food. The daily special blackboards, strategically positioned at front of the restaurant, scream good value Italian food at daily commuters as soon as they step out of a long train journey at the start of daily mundane. Eat-all-you-can Tuesday night pizza and paste; $10 lunch special of pizza and pasta, if you like Italian food, how can you not get tempted?

I finally gave in to the daily special boards and followed its direction to get a bacon and egg roll for breakfast. Firstly there is no price listed anyway, so I basically had to trust the decency of the restaurant that they are not going to rip me off. It turned out to be $8. Secondly the roll is pre-packed and sit there not sure for how long. Thirdly to justify their price $8, the roll is loaded up with double eggs and double bacon; it cannot be customized. In other words I had no idea how much this breakfast roll would cost me and ended up paying for things I didn't need or want. Had I know it was $8 for two eggs and two bacon, I would have walked away and found something else that was lighter. The fact it was pre-made and reheated didn't help the case, It tasted extremely average and the bread roll was very dry.

I will give it more one chance and try the pasta or pizza but you won't find me getting breakfast from there anytime soon.

I was surprised to see the rating here is so low. I just dined there last week, using my Dimmi 50% discount. The staff is lovely, altho the place is a bit busy, she is always very friendly and enthusiastic, to make sure everyone is good. Food are good, I love the dessert Qing Liu

I'm not sure why the rating for this place is so low. We came here using the 50% off Dimmi offer.
Service was very friendly and efficient - and it was the one staff member covering the whole floor. Food came out fast and piping hot.
The lasagna was my favourite with chunks of beef instead of meat between the layers of gooey cheese and pasta sheets.
Toppings on the pizza were scarce and slightly burnt but it was overall tasty and good value for the price we paid.
I'd come back for the lasagna, to try other pizzas and their tiramisu.

A group of 7 of us dined here on a Tuesday night. We all opted for the $25/person all-you-can-eat pizza & pasta (which, by the way, has limited options) and each ordered a drink (which you must do to qualify for the deal). The initial order wasn't taken for about 20 minutes after the last of the party sat down. Drinks then came swiftly; all except one. It never came out so had to be asked for again. Water and water glasses were also requested multiple times and did not come out until halfway through the meal. We seemed to have 2 x people serving us and one of them didn't know what a Hawaiian pizza was. A second round of pizzas were ordered and took about 45 minutes for them to come out (given that 3 x bowls of pasta and 4 x pizzas originally came out in a reasonable time frame, it was a bit odd).

It was only temporarily busy as it seemed to cater for after-work drinks and then it died down a little so I'm not sure that they were under the pump .

The atmosphere is dire; you can feel the trains rumbling and the buses hissing as they go by. The windows were flung wide open despite it being a cooler evening (and again, the road noise).

An incredibly lacklustre experience. A shame, since the pizza was fine (the pasta flavourless), and could have been an enjoyable evening. Thank goodness for the company of 6 others.

The pizza was good, however the pasta and risotto was not fully cooked; although the chef claims its al dente but we still could see the pasta was still raw. If you're just looking for pizza, this is the right place, but stay away from the pasta and risotto.

nice location and nice services. Pizza is above average but not cheap though. Will come back again. The seat next to the window is really cozy.
