Review Commodore Hotel - North Sydney

Thursday night mussels are a must! This place only does the mussels on Thursday nights and they are amazing! They have changed it up a couple times with different styles of mussels, but regardless which version you get, it’s usually always very delicious. Patrons and staff are very friendly too and they are pet friendly in their outdoor area. Good for a beer and sports too when there are games on.
Chris Pekic
Very tasty fish and good wines I love the atmosphere of this place SO GOOD !

Great outdoor area for a nice meal, friendly staff and pubgoers. Food was decent, although could be improved a bit, was a little cold and chips a little tasteless. Beers were nice and service fast lots of TV's for sports watching. Value for money was average. Overall had a good time, but nothing setting this pub aside from the others for me.

A long running Sydney social scene and institution of fun with mates. Beverages are on the high side, but there's some innovative drinks on offer. Friendly staff and good pub food. The Pork Chop was awesome.

As locals we like to support local business and are regulars at The Commodore. Good atmosphere but majority of the staff are unprofessional, severe attitudes, eating behind the bar, on their phones, behaving like children…..service skills are non-existent. Pay a bit more & employ people who are good at their job & want to be there.

It’s always unfortunate to see a well established popular pub get too big for their boots and the food standard drops. Chicken Parmi was a piece of glorified Devon on top of a Schnitzel and black and gold cheese to top it off. As for the fries, overcooked and will remove teeth faster than a glass barbie. For $26.00 you could get so much better.

Good tasty food and family friendly… decent beers on tap and friendly service. We enjoyed our night there!

This was a very pleasant experience for my wife and I. This would have been a five star I'll definitely be back if the customer service would have been better than dismal. The food was great, the beer choices were numerous and so was the wine selection. Loved the community feel. Really loved the fact dogs were welcome. The NZ born bouncer was awesome and very friendly and a younger male bartender was good but that's were it ended. I brought my wife's and my dirty plate back to where the dirty plates were stacked on a cart. I asked one of the bus boys is it ok to put them here. Without a word he grabbed them out of my hands and walked away without uttering a word. I have been all over this planet and have dined at many places and this young man's actions will keep me from going back. It is ashame that many of the other staff never smiled and when they did look your way you received a very blank don't bother me look. Food was great, presentation was good price was very affordable. If you subtracted most of the customer service this would have been a grand slam.

My partner and I booked The Commodore for our Engagement Party and it's one of the best decisions I think we've ever made!! From the beginning of our experience working with them, everything was easy! I'm a super stressy, panicy planner and Alex (the functions manager) kept me calm and reassured throughout! Everything was wonderfully laid back and easy! Arriving on the day, the area was ready for us with a lovely sign. All the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. They very quickly picked up that my partner and I were the happy couple and would immediately come help us if needed! The food was amazing, the drinks selection is superb and it's all incredibly well priced!! All of our guests are raving about it and we've already got multiple lunches, dinners, birthdays etc planned back at The Commodore in the next few months!

Food was expensive and bland. Atmosphere and drinks were good but menu was a rip off and poorly executed. Calamari was foul and croquettes had no pulled pork in them. Won't go again.

I was in for the UFC on Sunday. Great crowd and atmosphere. They have updated the menu recently and have added some killer salads, the lamb one especially. I will be in on the 20th for sure! Thanks!!

Great outdoor area, music and the food is amazing. One of my favorite spots. Summer night are extra special with fairy lights on big oak trees

I went to the commodore the other night and mate can I tell you the snitty there is absolutely... Great and I was cheering. Loved it more addictive than cocaine. Got me and the boys a few brews from the bar and there service was smack on. Nothing like a cold one after a hard day of yakka then lovely service. Decided to check out the VIP room to play my pay check on dragons. I won absolute ripper of a win deffenetly recommend you go there and play pretty sure you'll win. Either way me and boys got a few road beers and where on our way 5 out of 5 starts loved it

Wondering atmosphere, very responsible food and drink prices

Dinned here this afternoon. We were alarmed to watch 2 of your staff on two different occasions help themselves to food off customers plates in plan view while they were on the pass ready to be served out. We were in absolute shock as we sat there watching and were hesitant to eat ours when it was ready. Really sad as we had heard so many great things about your pub

Maybe im mistaken. But I thought a typical roast included Roast potatoes, proper thick Gravy,Mash, Cauliflower & Yorkshire pudding. Not just a lamb shank which is mostly bone sitting on a small bed of baby Broccoli and a carrot or two. And for $25. Much better Sunday Roasts around and for cheaper. Could sell a lot more if a proper Sunday Roast was put on without skimmping on all the traditional ingredients while lowering the price to match the prices of other pubs in the area.

Terrific food, atmosphere and service!

Could do with signs indicating smoking and no smoking areas.

This is an outstanding pub bistro, and one of the best I’ve been to recently in Sydney. The food is of a high quality, and served in generous portions. Service is professional, fast and efficient and the ambience is relaxed and laid back in a comfortable and relaxed environment.

Toilets are clean, well stocked and prominently signposted, making them easy to find.

You can choose to sit outdoors or indoors. Being a slightly rainy night, we choose to sit indoors in the carpeted area, just behind the service counter. Most diners, it seems, prefer outside, but apart from the rain, it was too noisy for us. Far nicer being dry indoors. Tables are well spaced out, and the carpets and high ceilings make for excellent acoustics and we had no trouble conversing.

Three of us dined and we ordered a calamari starter to share ($16). It was crispy and tasty; just the right way to start the meal. For mains, I chose the roast of the day, which was lamb ($24), the others chose the katsu chicken poke bowl ($20) and the tofu poke bowl ($18). My lamb roast was a hearty English-style roast dinner, with lashings of well cooked, finely cut slices of tender lamb, substantial helpings of vegetables including pumpkin, potatoes and green beans and a nice chunky Yorkshire pud. The other meals were also well received. The chicken katsu was succulent and tender in a crunchy batter. The tofu poke bowl had a variety of nutritional and colourful seasonal vegetables. Everything was fresh and flavoursome, with top quality ingredients, and we all enjoyed our meals. To end, what else, but our fav sticky date pud ($12). That was also a winner. It was sweet and moist and came with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. The perfect way to finish the evening..

Ordering is done up at the service counter and meals are brought to the table. Despite a reasonable turnout on a Sunday night, there was very little waiting time. Staff are neatly turned out in smart black uniforms and they all seem to know exactly what they’re doing, including the bar staff, and the place hums like a well oiled machine. It’s a pleasure to enjoy an evening here where everything runs smoothly.

We paid a reasonable $103 for a starter, three main meals, dessert and three drinks - a single midi of beer and two soft drinks. That’s not bad value considering the high quality of the food, generous portions and super fast service.

There’s easy parking on any of a number of streets nearby, where there are no weekend or after-hours restrictions. We found a spot on Lavender Street, a five minute walk from the hotel.

This is one place that’s worth a return visit.
Chris Deale
Had a list of cocktails, but you couldn’t buy them after 9.30pm what’s that about - it’s not as if the staff are busy at that time.

went over for lunch on Friday, ordered the Manhattan burger, and a glass of coke, The burger is super dry, dry beef patty with dry low quality salty bacon on a dry bun, the triple cheese should helped but somehow it manage to be dry and tasteless. the glass of coke to wash the dry burger down cost 4 dollars and the burgers with chips cost 22 dollars. over priced and disappointing.

Never would have thought a pub poke bowl would be so delicious but this is legit. Generous portion lots of avocado, and zesty dressing. Super impressed a pub did this to such a high quality. Seriously delicious and better than the burger IMO

If you want slow service from inexperienced restaurant managers and overpriced food, then this is the place for you.
what a waste of time this was.
ToFeedTwo
Cosy pub tucked away in Sydney's north offering a wide range of classic pub favourites as well as classy, mixed Mediterranean style dishes.

We were very impressed; dined outside on a warm but windy Sunday night and the ambience was very nice. Chinese Pork Belly for entree: crispy, succulent and delicious. Mains-Chicken Avocado salad was good - Parmesan dressing the winner! and Pesto Pasta was refreshing, full of greens and felt like a home-cooked meal 😃

Nom nom! Would return!

We went to this venue for after work dinner and drinks. Staff are friendly with a good cocktail knowledge and range of beverages both by the bottle and on tap. Great range of basic pub foods done well. A friend had the schnitzel with was a generous and well cooked. I had the salmon which had the most amazing crispy skin and beurre blanc sauce. Great outdoor area with heating for when the sun goes down and nice little indoor area as well. Definitely recommend the Commodore as a great venue for drinks and dinner.

We came here for a friend's birthday dinner as she had a hankering for bar food, and it was a really nice place. The outdoor seating area was large and spacious with plenty of seats and tables. Thank god it's summer so the sun was still up at 6pm, which made sitting outside very nice.

We all ordered our own dishes, which included the chicken parmigiana, the beef burger, chips, wedges, nachos, a salad and a steak dish, along with moscato and some other drinks. Half of our food came but the other half of our order got lost, and while that would be aggravating, the staff were quick to offer us a free bottle of champagne and even a whole extra dish free of charge to make up for it.

Everything was cooked really well and tasted great, and I particularly enjoyed the wedges and the chicken and rice dish we got for free. Overall it was a good bar with good food, and very friendly staff. Will be back for other occasions!

We ordered almost everything that was on the menu as it was a team lunch so can review on their food and service confidently. Presentation-beautiful. Bar options-alright. Service-can be more nice. Venue- too good as it is outside facing silent roads with good light and air. Now comes the food- chicken was dry. Salmon well cooked, burgers are not great but can go for it 2 or 3 times before you get bored. Nachos was good. Ravioli was no way near a good ravioli dish. Overall a place that you can go 4 times and get bored. Can improve a lot to complement the perfect location.

When we were tired of going to the same pubs in North Sydney week after week (Firehouse, Rag&famish, Terrace hotel, etc), Commodore seemed to be such a fresh breath of air and got us out of our usual stomping ground. That's how we started the habit of wondering down here on Fridays. It's not a big pub but it offered good beers on tap and had good pub grub. I only tried chicken schnitzel which was of decent portion and taste. It got quite busy Friday after work that we often couldn't find tables inside and had to cram near the front stairs. We found it a good alternative to change scenery from North Sydney.

Great pub in north Sydney. I came here for a work lunch and I really enjoyed the open space, but be careful of the falling leaves. Good quality pub food too - the burgers are wonderful!

Grill your tummies with a delightful pub lunch in the relaxed open space of the courtyard. Stack with the wagyu beef burger with a juicy patty plus bacon, and sandwiched in between a crispy and fluffy bun. Sear into the Atlantic salmon, a generous portion full of flavour and perched on a bed of creamy mash.
Chris
Overpriced pub food. Beer garden has a nice atmosphere but bar was under staffed for a busy Friday lunchtime. Good selection of tap beers. No parking.
Ashley Xu
The pub food here is not cheap but is the best flavor around north Sydney.
Lunch special is relatively cheaper and we often go there for team lunch.

Yummy salad but pretty overpriced. Came here for friday lunch with colleagues and ordered a lamb salad ($22) it was ok. Ambience was nice. Service was fast and food was yummy

The Commodore Hotel has been renovated so it's got a fresh beer garden. It has a wooden, modern outside feel which is perfect for a meal and a beer.

My vegetarian colleague who was departing ordered a very good looking dish. The beetroot, walnut and feta ravioli at $20 looked delicious! The ravioli had a sage butter sauce with pieces of roast beetroot, a sprinkle of walnuts and pistachio and goat's cheese. There was also a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. It looked very fancy for a pub meal.
As I was in the beer garden, I felt compelled to order the classic Angus Beef Burger at $18. The beef burger had layers of bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, ketchup and mayo. It came with a very large side of chips. So nice pub burger. Not quite as foodgastic as Chur Burger but still a nice burger.

I had massive food envy though for my colleague's chicken burger which had cheddar, bacon, coleslaw with a ranch sauce (which was also $18).

Prices: About $20 for mains
Locatio

We had a work function and typically with the pubs - the food is average or you have to be quite drunk to enjoy the food. However I had a very different experience at the Commodore. I have been here for drinks before and it's a nice cosy pub to enjoy a few drinks. What is the food like though? This is what you want to know! I ordered the truffle fries and the octopus salad. I love truffle flavours and there was a nice drizzle of truffle oil on the fries which had mushrooms and parmesan cheese. They were devoured by myself and my colleagues very quickly. The octopus salad was good too. My colleagues next to me had the steak and the burger. They looked pretty good and the verdict was a thumbs up baby! Peace Prices = $20-25 per main

I must say it's one of the better pub dining places I've been to in Sydney and definitely a place we'll be returning to for future team lunches.

It was the day of S and T’s wedding, after the beautiful ceremony, the crew (P1, C, P2, D, A and I) thought we would catch up, have a drink, and grab something to eat, as we were all ravenous. C suggested we go somewhere on Blues Point Road, in North Sydn

While The Commodore in McMahons Point retains a pub feel, its expansive outdoor terrace beer garden and rather upscale dining area position it towards the working professional; aided by its awarded casual dining menu. The Commodore’s Warm Winter Curry Wednesdays tempted me over the bridge and into the stylish, cosy bistro where it’s drinks from the bar and grab a number for your food. Beef massaman curry with jasmine rice I couldn’t go past the day’s curry: a beef massaman served with jasmine rice. The serving of curry, large and quick out of the kitchen, was covered in crushed peanuts and was delivered with a smallish serve of ric

Poor overcharging service. Charged $30 for a jug that fills 3 scooners when 3 scooners are $7.20 cheaper.

Went on steak night Tuesday $15 good value for money, was a bit loud and busy.

Major disappointment. Having lived in Perth for 25+ years I have endured my fair share of disappointing dining experiences. Revisiting Sydney recently and staying in North Sydney I was hopeful that I would have many wonderful dining choices. As a past regular of the Commodore Hotel I read the reviews and thought I would take a trip down memory lane. I then set about convincing my well-travelled friend that this was the place to go for a great dinner. I remembered the great atmosphere - and that was still there - and we were looking forward to some quality pub grub as mentioned in the reviews. Well, where do I start...My friend ordered the Salt & Pepper Calamari and I ordered the Chicken Schnitzel. Both meals were below the lowest standard that one might expect from the likes of Sizzler. Pre packaged, undercooked, whitewashed garbage. The 'handcut' chips were processed fries and salted so as to protect the Gen X diners from the possibility of ever acquiring goitre. Needless to say our food was sent back to the kitchen with some sound advice for the 'chef' to brush up on the basics. We were given a heartfelt 'sorry' and asked if we would like anything from the menu. Needless to say, we decided that it was better to go home hungry.
Mike
Great dinner specials! 300g rump steak with nice accompaniaments for $14 on Tuesdays. I don't think I've had a better steak at this price.
Kate
Great food. With the group of us, we tried a range of items from the menu. All were great. The burger is better than great, its amazing. Ravioli is delicious. Friendly & attentitive staff.

Solid pub food. Been here multiple times over the years with the work team and it does seem to get better although the prices have steadily gone up. There is the Monday steak deal which many took advantage of.

Had the giant chicken schnitzel - this was good although the chips were covered in paprika (the hot kind) which I couldn't eat so this was left to go to waste since everybody else already had tonnes of chips. Had a side of the mac and cheese - quite gooey and good although a little plainish in taste.

Good quality food and appreciated the roof for the outside section especially once it started raining.
Pineapple0011
Rude Staff. The lady at the food counter got annoyed and was rude when a question was asked about the menu.
Abdul
Excellent meal at an excellent price. The pork belly was to die for, and the $12.50 Monday steak meal was an absolute bargain. Leave room for a $10 dessert too! We'll be back next time we are in Sydney.
Cinntonic
Good vibe. Sweet outdoor area and funky indoors. Menu is awesome, although tailored to the white collars... May seem a little pricey but its restaurant quality.

Stick to the menu, Don't bother with the $13 Mooday Mondays as it's disappointing. Small steaks and salad = rocket only. Stuck with it for 2 months and moved to the Terrace Hotel for steak night instead.

Favourite Local. I love The Commodore and try to go roughly once a week. Food is always great. I'm obsessed with the Arancini Balls, Burgers and Sticky Date Pudding.

The indoor fireplaces are wonderful. Outdoor heaters make sitting on the huge patio a treat anytime of year and the service is wonderful.
Kylie
Fairly standard pub. The usual greasy food to help the beer go down. A good outdoor space if you can get a table. And cocktails that range from surprisingly good to average depending on who serves you.
Ben Douglas
Came in on Friday and thoroughly loved it. Had the sirloin and a few beers and ended up staying longer than I planned.... So refreshing to go to a venue where the staff are actually helpful and care - well done
Ben Johnson
What a great food pub. It is up there with some of the really good restaurants and you only pay half the price. Staff are very friendly and profesional. Try the salmon mignon wrapped in prosciutto or the pork belly with carmelised chilli sauce. Yum.
Martin Brown
New look Commodore. I have to say that the Commodore was one of my faviourite pubs for being able to grab a table outside having a few drinks. Haven't been here in over a year and what a difference!! The place has been totally renovated and these old reviews don't do the place justice at all.

Came in for a couple of cheeky beers and ended us staying for dinner - food was seriously good. Don't know what they've done but the crowd is so much better than it used to be (and so are the staff...).

Had a great time and will definitely be back - thanks.
Andrew Nell
Great location the staff are complete toss pots. Generally love the outdoor area...food is okay...good atmosphere...staff are generally complete tool bags with only a handful of exceptions
