Review Curry Cafe - Northcote

Amazing food! Staff are friendly. The place is quiet small and can get really noisy and crowded. Recommending to book a table before hand as they get super busy.

On a cold winter's night, it's preferable to sit indoors however the heaters outside were ok for us. The food was great but they portions could have been been larger. They did come out in a reasonable time though. I also wish they had more cocktail and alcohol choices.

Probably a little more pricey than your average Indian takeaway, but definitely worth it. This is a gem of a restaurant down on the Westgarth end of High Street. The food doesn't put a foot wrong with amazing flavours in everything we tried. Lucky to have this one nearby!

Birthday Dinner, we arrived 10 mins before our booking, they moved a table of four to accommodate six of us. After standing at the end of the table in the middle of the restaurant waiting for two chairs my son went outside and brought in two chairs for us to sit at the table. We asked for some clean glasses and wine glasses. They brought us four wine glasses for six people then took our order. We asked for two more wine glasses so we could toast my birthday, after waiting for some time I got and went to the counter to ask for two more glasses. The food came out and it was yummy but not enough rice so we ordered some more. We waited but it never came. I went and paid didn’t ask about the extra rice just wanted to leave. Food was great but left feeling neglected.

meal was $69 paid $91 so with surcharge paid over 20 bucks what a joke!. Would've been nice to know before hand maybe display a sign or advise customers . Very dissatisfied overall won't be going there again . Topped off with poor customer service and curry is nothing to boast about bread was so dry and stale .

Butter chicken, veggie curry, rice & naan. Brilliant poppadoms (that's important to me) and probably one of the most pleasant Indian meals I've ever had. A return visit is a cert!

I’ve been going to Curry Cafe with my family for the last 10 years. Every time has been a moment of joy, of family unity; a meal to be cherished. The flavours of the saag paneer, lamb madras, chicken tikka masala, and fish madras have enthralled me and embodied culinary pleasure throughout my formative years. Now I’ve moved out from my family home, and I’m no longer in the locale. Today I woke up and craved one thing and one thing only - Curry Cafe. Words cannot begin to describe how this meal made me feel. It was delicious, comfortable, culinary expertise. A tear reached my eye. I want to honestly say that me and my friend, who dined tonight, left in a state that could only be described as ecstasy. Curry Cafe means a lot to me, and after all this time, it thrills me to know that they still put on a mean meal. I’m so happy. Thanks to the team who delivered such a wonderful experience :) it’s good to be back

Food: pretty tasty for my first time here. Great flavour and tender meats in the meals. Portions are also quite decent. The naan bread is also pretty good ! Venue/Service: great little spot in Northcote. Nice and cosy, with a great ambiance. Wait staff were also super friendly, and offer great service.

Disappointing service. Been coming here for 10 odd years. Usually for special occasions.

But tonight when they were under the pump they resort to hanging up on customers after having panicked making unclear calls that the food is running late. No clarity if they were cancelling the order or what. Communication goes a long way. Customer service goes a long way. That was one of the great things about this place. Unfortunately, Curry Cafe no long has it.

A Northcote dine in staple has gone to pot. RIP

Pity. It was a good one. Emphasis on was

Won’t bother coming back again
We come here all the time for the curry, it’s delicious. For meat eaters and vegans alike. Michael is a champ, always on, and willing to make your night the best it can be. We once saw him single handedly serve an entire room when someone else much have called in sick, it was amazing.
The only reason this review isn’t 5 stars, is that sometimes the other staff can be pretty apathetic. But we continue to put that aside for the good and spicy times at curry cafe!

Melbourne has a lot of Indian food and they tend to cluster in certain neighbourhoods. Most Indian restaurants are a bit of a blah. We are so glad to have Curry Cafe in our neighbourhood. This place has become my go to place for Indian food. The spices are fresh and the food is generous and absolutely delicious. Meat was tender and the curry, omg, the curry was so smooth and buttery and full of goodness. We stuffed ourselves with so much, chicken takkan tin, lamb rogan ghosh, naan and rice. Loved every bite and we know we have hit a personal favorite when you catch yourself remembering the flavour a day after the meal. That is good sign of good food. The restaurant has very low lighting and can get noisy if it is filled up. But we got takeaway so it didn't impact us. Service was warm. The meal was also priced very reasonable. About $18 or $19 for each box of meat. Rice was fluffy at $4. We wanna go back again very soon.

6 Sept 2019 - we returned and we had the most delicious pork belly. I want to eat at this restaurant every week!

Had a lamb curry in a pot that was recommended by the wait staff. It was okay, good heat, bit tart, lamb cooked well - but not the style curry I was feeling that night. Would like to come back to try another style curry... the garlic naan is dope!
Kate
Really excellent curry. Meltingly tender meat in rich well flavoured buttery sauces, and the veggies in the veggie curries are perfectly done to keep their texture. The takeaway portions are generous enough to justify the prices. would definitely come back!

Best curry I’ve had in my life easily the lamb madras is something from another planet, amazing customer service and beers will be dining here everytime I come to northcote :)

Brought a Groupon voucher, was a nice meal, average size meals though, probably just worth the value you pay for the voucher. Won't be rushing back, but I would visit again as it wasn't that bad!

Great place for a casual yet intimate dinner, perfect for a casual date. Yummy food and reasonable prices. Need to make a booking at least a couple of hours before!

First time booked for 7 people - on time and super friendly. the food came in shortly after and was really good. The curries were like the westernised version of Indian curry. Very delicious. Specially butter chicken. The staff were nice and helping. Would definitely come back.

The food was nice there were no surprises, some of the curries may have been a little oily but overall good as was the service. Small points, couldn't really read the menu as the lighting in there was a little too atmospheric probably more suited to a bar. Also it got really loud in there. A good offering and a nice change from the other offerings in Westgarth.
Ben
We ordered the lamb rogan josh, lamb madras and chicken tikka masala. The food was of generous proportions cooked perfectly and the taste ....Wow unbelievable! Easily the best Indian food we've ever had.
Highly recommend Curry Cafe. As Arnie says "will be back".
Kristina
Absolutely amazing food! I keep ordering the same dish because it is so delicious and I don’t want to give anything else a go. Yummy vegan options, not too spenno 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽💖

Went on Cheap ass movie night. I have never heard of this place but as soon as we walked out of the cinema we followed our nose and could not resist. Our waiter was delightful, friendly and attentive. We ordered the lamb rogan josh, fish masala and the beef vindaloo. Lamb was the winner!!! Beef needed to have a bit more fat content to make it more melt in the mouth, it was tender but a bit dry. our saffron rice was light and fluffy, but I would love it served in a bowl with higher sides to make it easier to serve. Cheesy Naan - yum! popular with locals and a cheap eats winner in my mind. Thanks.
Hassank27
Horrible service and food. Our waiter was very unfriendly. Food was rubbish and not authentic at all.
Never seen such unfriendly staff. Would HIGHLY NOT recommend it. Stay away from this place.
Angie
Been here many a time and it does not disappoint! The most recent time, my Indian friend suggested the Kashmere naan and it was rich, buttery and beautifully spiced with nuts and sultanas. Have tried almost all the curries and cannot fault any of them. Reasonably priced given the quality and we never seem to be able to go over $25pp despite how much we eat! Make sure to book as this place can get packed, especially on weekends.
Mary-mia Ioculano
Went to this place last Sunday evening with friends and it was absolutely packed. I'm glad we booked because it's a very popular place. The food was absolutely delicious and it came out quite quickly the service was friendly and attentive. They have specials on Sundays for $10 a plate which was absolutely amazing value. Awesome place will go again👌

yum!! I have ordered food from here quite a few times on uber eats and it has always been phenomenal !! I am yet to actually go have dinner in store but its on my list of places to go !!
Their pumpkin masala and chickpea salad are my absolute favourite things to eat from here! I also love that they are very very vegetarian and vegan friendly !!

this will always be an uber eats favourite for me !! keep up the good work Curry Cafe !!!

It's always a grim sight when you enter a restaurant to see more than half the tables full of dirty plates. The lighting is so dim that reading the menu is near impossible. The food was delicious but I'm afraid it wasn't enough to make up for the appalling service. Seriously bad wait staff who couldn't manage the basics. Buy some light bulbs and get some staff who understand customer service and we might return.
Christine Buhagiar
Avoid going there at any cost.... the food was terrible. We ordered a dahl which was disgusting and a pumpkin which was also disgusting. On top of that, the rice was cold. The waiter was unfriendly and I was overcharged. It was very expensive for what we got. I eat there once before last year, it was fine.

Yum! I ordered an eggplant curry with saffron rice and Roti and it was great! I am so happy to see a large selection of vegan options and quite tasty from what I've tried so far! The only reason I'm giving 4 and not 5 stars is that the Roti was a bit burnt, but the curry and the rice were delicious, the service was great and everything was pretty affordable too! I am really happy with my experience here and I will definitely be ordering from here again!

My absolute favourite Indian restaurant in Melbourne, with amazing vegan options. I'm addicted to the eggplant & potato curry and the pickle! Wonderful atmosphere to dine in with a small group of friends.

Takeaway options are great too – only slight criticism is that while 75% of the time the containers are packed full (yay! Perfect amount of food to feel full but not stuffed!), sometimes they're not full enough.

But love your work Curry Cafe, keep it up! :)

Used to really love this place and would ubereats on the reg (that fish masala, tho). But the last few times I've ordered it have been really different and tbh I don't think I'll be going back. Although adding the option of brown rice is a plus, and the chickpea salad is fresh and yum. But still, where am I going to get my Indian fix now?
Abb
Yummy curries! Been here a few times and haven't been disappointed. Curries are a good size and very tasty! Probably could do with more meat in each dish but overall very good. Mango lassies are a crowd pleaser
Andy Cake
The poppadoms on the table are awesome. I've always found the service lovely and friendly and the meals are generally delicious, but I have a couple of issues which would really improve things. The curries are just not hot enough. If you like any sort of heat, order hot and even then you might need to order extra chilli. Servings aren't particularly generous in volume compared to other joints where I've been and once or twice I've found the curries to be all sauce and very little protein, i.e. paneers or meat dishes which have only a measly few bits of cheese or meat in them. But another time we didn't have this issue, so who knows?!
Hulio
Food was delicious. Service was horrible except for the friendly guy in the kitchen. Woman serving us looked like if she cracked a smile the world might end. Apparently they have changed their late night open times to not so late. Don't expect a warm reception when you walk into a busy restaurant on a Friday night at 9:30pm. Two staff, not just one, rudely came up to our table once seated to tell us they were closing at 10:15pm suggesting we had to hurry along. Way to make your customers feel welcome!! Turn the sign on the door to closed if you're closing and change your hours out front and online. Don't ruin your customers experience just because you want to go home at 10:30pm on a Friday night.

Ordered online.
Recievered a watered down chicken korma. Bland flavor and bareley any chicken.
Garlic naan was practically plain naan. Dry and bland. Could smell the garlic, but couldn't taste it.
Rice was decent.

These guys are friggen legends! As a chef myself and having heaps of specific dietary requirements I've not bothered eating out as it's generally a nightmare. However when craving Indian and feeling particularly lazy one night, we contacted Curry Cafe to ask if there was anything I'd be able to eat with my intolerances and they were more than happy to adapt and offer several menu items with just a couple of days notice. My partner and I dined in last night and were seriously impressed by the food. Heaps of variation between each of the curries and more importantly lots of flavor, all the meats cooked to perfection, chill atmosphere, friendly staff, great beer selection too! Couldn't recommend highly enough, genuinely best indian either of us have had in a long time. Maybe ever? Thanks again
Mat Priddy
Very delicious Indian and well priced too. Home delivery is also essential for Sunday evenings when walking to the car is not an option. The Lamb Pasanda is my personal favourite and would highly recommend. The vegetable samosa is by far the best I've eaten (tamarind sauce is amazing). An absolute staple for anyone in Northcote or Fitzroy North.

We dined Curry Cafe at home via Ubereats as we needed a late night curry-based treat. And it hit the spot. The order came through quickly within the allocated time and we were pretty excited by the aromatic smells of the order upon unpacking. I went with the butter chicken (which I can never seem to pass up) along with a side of naan. We also ordered a masala kulcha which is a special naan filled with potatoes, peas, cottage cheese, herbs and spices. Mmm.

Ordered the Tandoori Sampler around 1AM. Portion is fine, colour looks good but there's almost no taste. Fellow Malaysian here, so I know how Indian food actually taste like. They sure taste like Indian food, but just at 10% intensity (in other words, watered down). The mint sauce given to us was made with sweet yoghurt, however you should know that the traditional/real sauce is made with sour yoghurt. After much digging into the chicken, I even found small parts of uncooked chicken. Also, the lime that came with it? NO JUICE.

Service was good and prompt.

What I did? Kept half the portion of the food to fry it with tomyum paste. Your Indian food is so bad I had to make it Thai.

EDIT//Update
I called Curry Cafe as suggested, according to them it was due to the late night order that led them to their tasteless mistake. They sent me a fixed copy of their Tandoori Sampler and it tasted great, this time with much more flavours and depth. Bear in mind, I had nothing to complaint except the taste in the first place. Great service for making up to me, definitely a great place for a late night snack or dinner, just make sure the taste is right for you :)

I came to this place with three housemates, on recommendation by one of them who had been there before. The restaurant was somewhat like I expected from walking and driving outside it many times before - Indian cuisine in a hipster cafe setting. It felt a little bit confused. For food, I ordered a classic butter chicken (you can choose how spicy you want it and I opted for spicy), my boyfriend ordered a lamb saag, and we shared rice and naan between us.

I don't eat much Indian food out, but when I do, it's usually at Base Camp, not far up High Street from Curry Cafe. The butter chicken by Curry Cafe was very good, and it was nice touch that I could choose how hot I wanted it. My boyfriend's lamb saag was sub par though - the curry was lacking a bit of the green component, and I agreed that Base Camp does their lamb saag better. The rice was too soft for my liking, and the naan was good, but slightly doughy around the edges. The other two in our party were vegan and vegetarian, and I commend Curry Cafe for offering a wide scope of non-meat items, as well as a good ability to customise orders.

In all, I liked my experience at Curry Cafe. The staff were nice, the food was mostly delicious, and the price isn't too high. I'd come back here to try the BBQ options!
Mr Boab
I ordered the chicken tikka masala and garlic bread. Food arrived stone cold. The chicken tikka was very bland and had very little chicken. The sauce tasted just like tinned chopped tomatoes with Harissa sprinkled in. The bread was tough and had absolutely no garlic taste to it whatsoever.

Absolutely awful. Did not even bother eating it. Waste of money.
Two Bears And A Fork
WAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. Seriously, our review's going to stand out like a sore thumb among all these 3.5+ ratings! We've been here a couple of times for their "Thali Time", of which were really, really good. The other night, we went back for dinner with, naturally, very high expectations - which were totally blown apart. Excepting the amazing spicy Pav Baji entree, the rest of the meal was VERY ORDINARY! Hubby's Fish Tikka, while flavoursome itself, was waaaay over-charred on several bits (yes, we expect crusty charring on anything from the tandoor, but not entire big portions of the fish turned to crumbling charcoal). The salad the fish was sitting on hadn't been washed properly, so Hubby kept getting bits of grainy-sand as he got closer to the bottom of his plate. Speaking of the plate, it was so small for the portion, that just picking up a piece caused the oil/juice to spill all over the table. Hubby's Lamb Rogan Josh was devoid of any of Rogan Josh flavour - it really tasted like a bowl of a bitter, bland tomato curry (*note though, the lamb was very well cooked, falling apart). My Dal Makhani (with added paneer cheese +$4) was mediocre at best because it had no real flavour. Despite advising we'll have our curries "medium" heat spiced when asked, there was no heat at all --while we are seasoned Indian food foodies, we don't eat chilli for breakfast and know what to expect when requesting a mid-range spice level, our curries had ZERO heat. The rice was okay, but the Garlic Naan was pretty bad. Not only was the bread very chewy and gummy, it was overly charred in so many places that each mouthful tasted of intense bitter charcoal, of which easily over-took the curry flavour because, well, there was no real curry flavour. Oh! Yeah! And where was the garlic? We could SEE it, but could taste NONE of it!? Really - no garlic flavour on garlic naan - how's that even possible? And to top it off, our main server seemed like she'd rather be swinging a cat by its tail than be there. The only time she actually smiled was when we paid the bill. The bill? Well, we don't mind dropping money for good food - but the near $80 it cost us to eat and drink there felt like a total waste; and in all honesty, when we add this experience up (excepting the Pav Baji), there's nothing to go back for. Since we'll be the odd review out, if you go, we hope your experience is faaaaaaar better than ours!

Really great food. Chilled out, terrific staff.

Curry Cafe is a special place, with excellent friendly service, cosy vibes, great music and most of all, exceptional curries. They are all gluten free except the usual (kofta I think) and so delicious. The free papadums are also GF. Our favourites are the eggplant curry and butter chicken. It's always busy so get in early. Eat here and you will go to bed a very happy person!

One of the original resraurants on this strip this place hs been here since I was 18!! Great food great little space and great service! I am fussy with my currys as normally only like the real deal ( home cooked by my friends mums) but their butter chicken is to die for! Parking is a bitch so tramming it down is a better option.

This place is my local indian joint and I can't imagine any suburb having one better. Staff are very attentive and friendly, the interior is cosy, the beers are cold, food comes out fast. The manager is always down for a chat and he really adds to the whole "this is a locals place" vibe. Will eat here again (and again)

I'll be honest: we came back to Curry Cafe on their welcome back party after being closed for kitchen renovations so it was a busy night. However we were very disappointed with the food that night. The samosas were OK but the sauce tasted of nothing but bitter liquid smoke. When the curries finally came out they were lukewarm and the saag potato was undercooked and inedible. The vegetable Koftas were ok but for $14 3 balls is pretty steep. We've been going for over a year and they have not changed their curries once in this period. We're vegetarian and there's so many more vego curries they could be doing, what about some tofu curries? I just think it's time to change the game up a little bit as the food is now getting tired and bland. It's a shame because it's run by some lovely people.

Been here on a few occasions for dinner with friends and every time I have been I've not been disappointed. My most recent visit was on a Tuesday night and it happened to be $15 thali night. The small interior creates a very authentic relaxed environment with friendly staff that are more than willing to explain the menu if you are not a regular curry eater. We firstly ordered Mango Lassi's that where thick and creamy and of a good size. Next arrived our thali plates of mixed dishes consisting of tandoori mushrooms with house marinade, onion haji, mixed vegetable curry in a tomato and onion sauce, Dal Mahhani, Lamb rogan josh, saffron basmati rice and roti breads. The curry's were full of flavour and not to greasy with a perfect level of spice. The tandoori mushrooms where a slight let down as well as the onion haji but the the delicious fluffy rice (which we ordered extra of) and toasty roti made up for it. The standout dish was Dal but overall all features of the thali made for a cheap filling diverse meal. On previous visits my favourite curry would have to be the vegetable Kofta made up of house made dumplings filled with spiced potato and paneer in a creamy cashew nut and onion sauce. I have also had the potato saag which lacked flavour and was to runny for it to be a good proper curry. Would recommend this restaurant for take away as the diverse menu offering flavoursome indian cuisine is perfect for hitting those naughty weeknight curry cravings.
Rhys.k
Ordered take away tonight, had the josh's rogue lamb and the no chill, no chill, no chilli prawns (fo real) curries, coupla garlic nanas and champagne papidum's. All jokes aside this was the most delicious indian take away. Not heavy, not oily, just right.

Great retro place for heavenly curries. Attentive, welcoming staff in a cosy environment.

It's one of those places where, no matter what, I always over-order as I want to try everything. And I've yet to have a bad one! My only complaint, if any, is that occasionally I wish the curries themselves were a little hotter (spice wise). And that my partner liked curry so we could go more often!
BakeFace
The eggplant curry here is heavenly. When we go to the restaurant, the staff are polite and friendly and the food is consistently great. It's the only place we order online and know that what is delivered will be awesome. They are always attentive and communicative with online orders as well, calling you personally to confirm times. We love this place.
Chris
I am a big fan of Curry Cafe. Lot's of great dishes with heaps of flavour. The restaurant has a good vibe and the staff are friendly and helpful.

I have also ordered from Curry Cafe online and they have always been quick to deliver and have the same great food and service you get from being in the restaurant. They follow your order up with a phone call too letting you know how long it will be and that they received it, which is nice.

Definitely a great addition to the Westgarth strip!
David
We've been here a few times now and ordered online (Via eatnow) once a well. Probably some of the most enjoyable Indian food I've had in Melbourne! Marvellous service, awesome food and great beer.
Jase Newton
I love Indian food and enjoy it regularly. . Have travelled all over Europe, The USA, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. This is the WORST "food" I have seen or attempted to eat. Am so disappointed. I will never order from hese guys again. $27 wasted.
Jenjaroo
Ordered online. There were a couple of problems with the order, but they were really good about it all.
The portions seemed very small with little except for the sauce. It was tasty though.
Nico
Ordered online; the delivery and service experience was pleasant.
The food… was dreadful.
Cremated Roti bread slathered in old oil.
Butter chicken tasted like sugar with fatty meat.
Rice was so bland… cardboard would have honestly tasted better.
Steph A
Fantastic curry! This place has the best butter chicken I have ever had! We shared multiple curries between our table and all of the we're delicious! The service was great with friendly and helpful staff too!
LM
Excellent!!! Loads of veg and meat dishes. Highly recommend the eggplant sliders, eggplant curry and chili prawns. Will be coming back for more.
Luca Collins
The best Indian ever!! Delightful food and friendly staff.
The Don
I hate when I order a curry and it's tiny. Not here! The eggplant curry was a good size and a great bite to eat. The layout reflects the no fuss approach which is 100% fine with me.
G Train
Delivery is super slow. Curry is not great, dry and not fresh. Nan bread is average. The delivery driver was polite and apologetic for the delay, which is the only positive. Curry Masala is much better.
Irina Korzh
Omg gross. The worst tandoori I have ever had. So much sugar. Def not authentic. Lovely on the phone but very disappointed. Beriyani was the only thing edible.
Lulamay
The BEST Indian food I've had outside the UK. The quality, flavours and authenticity surely indicate there is a passionate and experienced chef preparing their delicious dishes. And all confirmed and delivered with 5 star outstanding service. These guys are leading the way with their nearest competitor miles behind.
Caffiend
Decent Indian that you don't have to drive out to the suburbs for. This place has got everything right. The curries don't leave you feeling lethargic and heavy and particularly the vegetarian options are amazing. Great condiments, delicious breads and there's always an obscure beer on tap worth trying. Very good.
Greg Whitehouse
Very good! Rogan Josh and Eggplant curry washed down with Two Birds Sunset Ale. Pleasant, unpretentious atmosphere, good music, good service, excellent food.
I agree with others - best curry I have eaten. Looking forward to return visit.

I had the best Lamb Madras this side of the Ganges.
A real gem of a place with great service from genuinely enthusiastic staff.
Love the vibe love the food.
Two Bears And A Fork
I'm going to confess upfront: we've eaten at over 60 Indian restaurants to date and that doesn't include repeat offenses to our favourites. And I'd go so far to say we're connoisseurs of the cuisine, at least of the Australian renditions. So how did Curry Cafe's trendy hipster style decor and $15 Thali Time meal fare with us? Click the link below ↓ to find out!

Really great food and service, very friendly and helpful staff.
+ is nice to have obviously designated vegan options that doesn't result in slower service

Excellent curry, with great service. Moondog on tap is always a plus for me. The curry could do with a little bit more chilli in my opinion. But the flavour is excellent. The rice servings could be larger, but thats just me.
Agedashisophie
We had a very lovely dinner at the Curry Cafe. The place is cute and the food very flavorful. Lots of variety, more original than most places. Everything was very fresh and really tasty. And the prices are very reasonable. Will definitely come back.

Couldn't be happier. We went during good beer week for their Tali time and couldn't have been happier! Food was great and the service was spot on! The place was absolutely packed but the English waitress was on fire!
Well done on an awesome evening!
Joolz666
Disappointingly downhill direction. This used to be great, but ever since the make over (possibly to appeal to hipsters if the lassi "glasses" are anything to go by), it's gone totally downhill. The last two times I visited, despite being asked and answering I'd like my curry to be medium, it was as bland as anything. Sent it back to get it spiced up, but all that resulted in was a colder curry, not spicier. I may give it one last go; if it doesn't improve I won't be back.
Tinagirl9754
Best curry in a long time. Visited there last night with my partner. Fast service, friendly, and the Chicken Korma was to die for. None of the food had cooled down at all. Beautifully hot. Can't praise the staff enough.
It slumped a while ago, but they're back to their best. Well done !!
Simsy123go
Delicious curry in a hurry. So fast is the curry. No more than 10 minutes after we had ordered, the feast arrived steaming and vibrantly spiced. Cool decor, very friendly staff, great local beer on tap and vibin atmosphere. Thali time is a bargain and a bonza way to sample the menu. Happy customer right here.
Activepr
Useless. One waitress, lots of customers, in cleared tables. Asked me to wait to be seated, disappeared and the table was taken .

Get some decent staff or consider another career

Left cold. While the menu looked interesting the food itself was bland and boring. Literally tasted like nothing. Where are the spices Indian cuisine is famous for? It could've been anything I was putting in my mouth as no point of reference for my taste buds
Kjam
Great for vegans. We have been going to this place for years and still love it! Our favourite indian in melbourne and the vegan options are amazing!

Good vibes, cheap, delicious. I took my family to thali time on Wednesday night for a cheap relaxed meal. Everyone enjoyed it, restaurant has a great atmosphere, interesting decor and good music, not your usual Indian affair, something different all together. Local beer on tap is awesome. Staff are friendly. We've also ordered chicken korma take away, different to the usual korma, much better and more interesting I think. win

Gone downhill. I used to be regular - for takeaways - Its too chaotic too eat in - but my last meal was awful - Cold, bland vegie Korma ( I's actually ordered the vegie curry, but was happy to try their "mistake" )
Even the normally good Naan was soggy and just warm.

Will try again in a few months.
Welwelwel
Dined in after a long break. Glad to see that the rice is no longer lurid orange in the cafe.

My big problem is with sweetness. I ordered chicken makhani and eggplant/potato curry. I tasted the chicken first, and it was cloyingly sweet, heading towards dessert territory. Reaching for the eggplant and potato curry, there was no relief from sweetness. In fact, I wondered whether apple or pear had been used in place of sliced potato. My attempt to add some tartness was foiled, since the raita is also sweetened. I sat there craving lime, lemon - anything sour, to balance the flavour palette.

When the arrives in the charming pewter pot, I always feel somehow alarmed. $14 each, and for fairly small serves. If this is free range chicken in the makhani, perhaps the expense can be justified. But eggplant and potato? $14?

On the plus side, the plain naan is lovely.

Anyone else find things too sweet? What are the non-sweetened dishes?

Have had some nice meals here in the past. Won't be back after Saturday night's meal. Entrée arrived with no cutlery. Just started eating it and our mains arrived. By the time we started them they were cold. Rogan Josh had very large piece of gristle in it. Vegetable Korma tasted like it hadn't be properly cooked. Looking to enjoy our meal out. Were out the door in an hour.

Absolutely delicious food - perfectly paired with their awesome house beer/ale. The food portions are huge and the prices are great, as equally as great as the Staff. Love this little northcote gem!

Hit and miss, but more miss. Not very authentic indian food. You can taste the old rusty pipes in your food. Very dissapointing .... won't be back :(

Really great, must visit.. Went here recently and the food was amazing, really top quality Indian food at a very reasonable price. The guy who runs the place is so cute, (definitely worth the visit ladies) looks like a cute jesus! hehe. Great food, great drinks, must visit.

Good quality, fresh, traditional Indian in a cool venue. It's so refreshing to see an Indian restaurant using good quality meats and vegetables. Everything we ate was so fresh and full of flavour. The eggplant curry was definitely our favourite pick.
The atmosphere was also fantastic - great music and very attentive staff.

Awful. What a dreary dinner we had. Our curry was tepid as though it had not been defrosted enough. The paneer was cold in the middle and not cooked. The curry itself was watery and flavourless. The rice which was sitting in big buckets on the floor of the kitchen (seen with a quick visit to the loo) was watery.

It is such a waste to have all that effort go to waste.

Good meal Saturday evening after a movie. My girlfriend and I thought the staff service was attentive and very friendly. We ordered the butter chicken korma and lamb with coconut with roti and rice. Both had good cuts of meats used. It cost us $20 each which was not too bad. The only thing afterwards was that both of us had slight upsets stomachs. It is probably just that we aren't used to curry so much, however, if I wanted another feed of Indian I would still return. Overall it was good we enjoyed our night even if it was a bit noisy and made it difficult for us to talk/hear. I think when the front room is busy the music should be turned down/off.

Dinner Review. Been twice now in the past 3 months, best curry in the city in my opinion. Great atmosphere, not your usually boring Indian restaurant set-up. Great food, great music, great beer list.

I remember coming here ten years ago with my mates and having fantastic food. It has always been in my mind so now l am married l took my wife here out of the blue for valentines day. The surrounding are different but the food was magnificent. .staff were busy but they did a great job. If you want a relaxing night definetly come here. Wife was also in agreement. .so win win

Went there with a group of friends and the food was tepid ,this is the second time this has happened, when they came over to ask how everything was I told them the waitress sighed and said you asked for medium .. WTF.. Not going back..

Absolutely delicious! Had take away tonight, chicken makhani is definitely the best I've had in Melbourne. Garlic naan is spot on!

Just WAY too much onion in all the curries we ordered. Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to onion, but pieces of onion shouldn't outnumber the pieces of chicken in a chicken curry! Only redeeming feature - the good selection of beers.

New favourite in Northcote. I LOVE Indian food and this place not only provided outstanding customer service from young, vibrant staff with massive smiles, but the most delicious food. Probably the BEST Garlic Naan i have ever eaten, and being a Hospitality guru, i'm not easily impressed. Its my new favourite place in Northcote! Two thumbs up Curry Cafe. Two thumbs up!

What a shame!. Used to go here all the time before it changed management. The wait staff are excellent, however that is where it stops. The food is now bland and tasteless. And the restraint seems to have lost its soul, having lost all the quiche art that was on the walls. Really disappointing.

Dinner review. Went here for dinner with my boyfriend and his family. Was a great little hip place! food was delicious too and the waiters were very friendly and helpful. Will definetly be going back again.

This place is our favourite take-out. As vegans, delicious Indian food can be hard to find. This place not only GETS the idea of 'vegan', but offers a large range of vegan options. Lovely ambiance for eating in, too. Two thumbs up!

New owners. the cafe has lost its charm. disorganised and no liquor licence. food way average. all tasted the same.
Monty
Good but not the real deal. I like this place but it is not authentically Indian. The tandoori chicken and mushrooms were tasty but did not taste at all like they should. The lamb curry had good flavour but was tough and the fish curry was generous but lack a bit of oomp. That said, the atmosphere was very nice and the service was good. I'd return but don't expect Indian food.

Yum! Tandoori platter is a.... Yum!
Tandoori platter is a bargain.
All yummy and can do mild, medium or hot for those less accustomed to chilli.

Everything was so tasty, service was fast and friendly, and really good value for money. Highly recommended.

Used to be so good. Now so bad!!!! Chickpea fritters probably the worst entre I've had ever. Dry, bland & cold. Curry had no flavor either. Used to be such good food. Won't be back. Seriously avoid. Big shame!
Heidi Hoe
Ok. Not as cheap as I expected and not that great.
No Accounting For Taste
Old favourite, now best to avoid. The place has been taken over, the walls given a fresh lick of paint, and the prices increased substantially. I wouldn't mind so much (as the old prices were ridiculously cheap, $8 curry and $3 wine) BUT the food quality has unfortunately decreased. I would now go elsewhere.
Paulie
Hi guys. Great looking place. Good atmosphere. Very friendly staff. BUT PLEASE DON'T WATER DOWN THE CURRY.... There are lots of people saying this so best to listen.
Euince
Worst food. I went yest dinner with my family. the biriyani rice which is meant to have some meat had absolutey no meat at all no spice. the butter chicken sucks, The lamb curry was not spicy as mentioned, the chicken curry was pretty average, love garlic naan. The vegetarian dish was a slush with no texture. We certainly didn't finish our meals and unfortunately haven't found a new 'go to' restaurant for an Indian food hit ... as much as I wanted it to be good.

I would certainly not be going back to this place again as the food leaves much to be desired.

Average Indian, the curries were watery, the tandoori entree was nothing special

Sqishies. I literally order from curry cafe at least once a week. Sometimes I eat in too, but thats only when I'm in the mood for the mango squishy - sooo good. Especially when its brought out by the friendly babe waitress ;)
