Review Tibetan Wild Yak Restaurant - Northcote

EL LL
Finally got to try this place for dinner. We ordered a few dishes across the menu (Chicken, Calamari, Tofu & Beef Thentuk). I'm not sure if I'm not use to the taste cuisine (First time trying Tibetan cuisine) but some dishes were a little bland, however overall everything was good. Decent portions and price.

The food was delicious! For entree: I got veg steamed Momo and my partner got their signature beef fried Momo. They were both good but fried beef Momo was exceptionally good (it’s their signature dish for a reason). And for our mains we got coconut rice, radish chicken and mushroom veggies. The mains were delish! We will definitely be going back for the radish chicken.

Came here for my mum's birthday. Restaurant feels very authentic from the interior to the food. We ordered the signature beef momos and cheese momos, the fried noodles (thenthuk), radish chicken (chasha lapau), stir fry beef (sha solo) and lamb curry for the mains. Most dishes were quite good although the noodles were a bit on the salty side. Loved that the dishes felt like traditional home cooking. We finished it off with some chocolate momos which were served with a side of ice cream and delicious. We also tried the salty milk tea which was a little strange for me but I didn't mind it in the end. Service was warm and friendly and they didn't charge a fee for serving the cake we brought in. Great place. Really felt like a slice of Tibet in the middle of Northcote.

Wild Yak Tibetan Restaurant have the best momo in town! Would love to go back. Feels very sacred place as we saw Dalai Lama photos from their Altar! This place is amazing!

Very genuine Tibetan cuisine. The atmosphere is calm and you don't feel like you are in Northcote! Momos were delicious! - well seasoned and the chilli sauce made it more tasty. Thenthuk was also great with an umami flavour and mellow. Tingmos were very soft. Their chai tea was also top notch; it did took them quite a while to make but definitely worth the wait. The prices are towards the affordable end.

I was glad to try out Wild Yak as I’ve never had Tibetan food before. The food was delicious and had interesting flavours. We ordered the Beef dumplings which was juicy and well done. Only thing is there were 9 dumplings and would’ve been nice to have more of that chilli and soy sauce. We also ordered the Chicken Fried Rice and Beef Lemon Stir Fry which were both intensely flavorsome. I actually can’t get enough of the stir fry. Make sure you order their buns which you can use to dip onto the sauce of the stir fry. I definitely will be going back to try out the rest of their menu.

Very lovely place with great food nice staff. Food quality was excellent and came really quick. This was our first time in this place but we’ll definitely go back to try everything on the menu!

Very lovely experience, price is good and food is so yummy. Feels clean and not too heavy, like a home cook food style. Would definitely come back often!
Quince And Cheese
Tried Wild Yak for the first time through UberEats after passing it countless times in person. I was first drawn in by the promise of momos and further impressed by their extensive and unique vegetarian options. In addition to the 4 piece veg momo set (which only come fried but are absolutely delicious that way) I also got two vegetable dishes - the delightfully sweet and sour honey and lemon vegetables and the mushrooms and vegetables cooked with cheese. I didn’t know what to expect from the dairy but it was melted through the dish and gave it a creamy, garlicky essence. Coconut rice and a steamed bun rounded out the meal. It arrived quickly, was very reasonably priced and tasted great.

3.5. Friendly and helpful staff. Really enjoyed the momo combo option where we sampled the different momos: steamed beef (my fav), panfried chicken (nice), deepfried veggie (nice) and panfried cheese (ok). Next was the fried beef thenthuk which had tasty soft noodles, although a tad bland. Would love to try it in the soup next time. Next we had the special pork dish with a spicy cheesy sauce. The dish was a surprise, very flavourful and quite spicy but worked well with the cheese. We scooped it up with the tingmo (bun), a large dense bun. Tried the Tibetan tea - too salty for my tastebuds. Overall, a lovely dining experience.

Walked passed this place many times but didn’t think much of it.
Until I decided to give it a stab. With some mates byo thank you very much!

The Momos were outstanding, like swallowing down a hot piece of soft gold filled with the finest beef and herbs money can buy. These were soo fresh. So tasty we ordered another round. The servings were huge and all the dishes were delish.

If you feel like a leak, head towards the back end and stop over and say hello to the Chef. The guy with the long goatee and large hat. He really looked like he was loving every single dish he was churning out. He was even wearing a Tibetan outfit!

We had a table of 4, worked out to be $25 a head at sharing 4 dishes.

Honest Tibetan food at a very reasonable price especially for Northcote. I highly rate this place. I shall be back soon!

This is one of my favourite places in Melbourne! Run by a beautiful Tibetan family - everything is fresh and authentic. Sometimes the staff are a little run off their feed but it’s totally worth it :)

Wow this restaurant was fabulous. There were four of us we all had two serves of dumplings they were “to die for” then we had four mains they were all mouth watering. I loved the Tibetan knee rugs. We couldn’t fault this restaurant in Northcote we will be going back again and again. Deb
Bites Of Melbourne
Visited with friends

Was good but nothing I was overly impressed by.

First time I had eaten Tibetan food.

Would be great for staff to talk through the menu as Tibetan is t that common in the area.
Nellie
Went for a Friday night date night. Really nice food and VERY reasonably priced ($50 for 2)!
We shared our food: fried momo’s (next time we will try steamed), Chasha katsa (lovely chicken but you got to like chilli), chickpeas, beef curry with rice & roti. Delicious! Next time will try to bring more people so we can order a banquet (min of 4ppl) & try more dishes. Only con is that it was a little chilly on a cold Melbourne night but we will definitely be back!

Perhaps the only Tibetan restaurant in Northcote and they know what they are doing. A combination of great and calming atmosphere, attentive service, and of course delicious authentic foods makes this place a must visit. The prices are also towards the affordable end.

Lovely food, lovely ambience and service with a smile. However, that smile could only be seen after long periods of time. We ordered a couple of plates of momos, a fried rice and a couple of Tibetian salty butter tea. While these may be nothing too complicated or time consuming, it took them all of almost three hours!!! It spoilt the fun of having the excellent food as the hunger was long gone. Anyway, we will try again and see if this horrible serving time was a one time thing. The food no doubt was excellent.

Easter’19... went there again. Lovely friendly service and the ordered food were served quickly in spite of a packed restaurant. Changing my rating from a 3 to a 5.
Irene Tridiani
Went past this restaurant when we went grocery shopping near Northcote Plaza. We never tried Tibetan cuisine before and it made us curious. The ambience was really nice and calm, with those paintings and music. We ordered momo as main meals (combined pan fried and steam), calamari curry (because chicken curry is too mainstream), beef sha nyamo kyurmo and bao (didn’t really like the texture while it supposed to be soft when you tear it apart). But overall it was a really good experience and we’ll definitely come back again since it’s just a stones throw away from our place!

Great place to warm up in winter with friendly service in a relaxing atmosphere.

The food is delicious! You can tell that everything used is fresh.

One of my favourite places in Northcote!
Nathan Galea
Went for dinner and came away with mixed feelings, started with Momo dumplings which were fantastic, especially the accompanying chilli sauce. Ordered Lamb curry-really really good, beef with tomatoes and chilli-very ordinary, chicken with spices and coconut milk- poor, no taste at all and a very very good potato and chick pea curry. Rice and general servings on the very small side for what you pay,but service was really good. A mixed bag here and you probably need to know what you want before you walk in.

Really enjoyed dinner here tonight.

Great family friendly atmosphere and service with a smile.

We had the momo dumplings which were delicious, roti bread, coconut rice, chicken, beef curry, dhal and calamari. Everything was tasty and enjoyable.
Michelle Bian
Lovely place! Particularly enjoyed the deco of the restaurant and the soothing music played there. Food was delicious as well. Definitely will come again.

Went here after being recommended the place by a few people. Overall experience - I wish I had not listened to them! I truly don't understand all these 4 & 5 star ratings. The curry and meat dishes were incredibly bland, with vegetables that were very obviously frozen and not fresh. The chicken curry was basically all coconut milk, and the beef/vegetable/honey/tomato dish was way too sweet. The food may be cheap but the serves are small and for what you get it's still not worth it. On top of that, I was charged corkage for 2 bottles of wine when only 1 was opened (refunded the 2nd corkage fee when I queried it). Don't bother! Go to Base Camp Himalayan instead, it's soooo much better and I wish I went there last night instead!

Everyone is raving about Wild Yaks momo dumplings, and after trying them for the first time I see why. The food in this little gem of a place is delicious, generous and very reasonably priced. Décor is pleasant and interesting, recreating an authentic Tibet Himalaya feel. The restaurant is patronised by Tibetans as much as Australians, which suggests it is the real deal. The superb food has something of Nepal, India and China, but also something unique that reflects the uniqueness of Tibet. I was surprised how well-rounded Tibetan food is, with dishes that could be European, to dishes indistinctly Asian, all served with a warm friendliness. A variety of beers are available but you BYO wine. Accessibility is excellent as the tram runs right by it and parking is easy enough to find in adjacent backstreets. They have an interesting little library of books and albums about Tibet which are worth a browse if you have time to linger. Overall, highly recommended.

Nice cozy family run Tibetan Restaurent. Quality ingredients and simple no nonsense style of cooking.

Love the momos, thukpa and chickpea. The ambience is really nice. It's a feeling of nostalgia as teens we used to travel to a Tibetan settlement in India called kushalnagar to visit the monastery & lunch in the many small hotels there.

I sometimes go here alone and enjoy the momos with relaxing Tibetan music playing in the background.
Jenna Yeats
This is a regular haunt for my husband and I. The food is great and the staff are friendly. The banquet is a great way to go if you have a larger group. We are so disappointed that they have now closed on Sundays though!
Foodie_gal
I had rarely looked inside this humble restaurant upon my daily commute, but was so enticed by the smell I had to check it out. So I did, Friday night.
The smell was STILL amazing but how did it taste?? *OMG*!!!!!
Please, bring your friends, bring everybody. Mains take about 40 min, so if you are hungry don't complain to yourself like me. The food IS worth it! Nice staff and great prices. 5.0
Brian
Friendly staff and nice ambience with excellent range of vegetarian as well as non vego dishes. Dumplings were excellent with a good wine list and range of beers. You can also BYO wine.
Two Bears And A Fork
We caught up with some friends here back in January and we put your on your guard if you go in summer: there is no air con in this place! Maybe it adds to the authenticity. Heat aside, there wasn't a spare table in the house, so clearly everyone (including us) was quite fine to swelter it out for the incredibly cheap $27pp "Banquet B" which comes with a huge assortment of food. From a bunch for entrees including momos (dumplings) to 2 meat curries and 2 veg curries, and then rice, salad, breads and a desert. If you're after value, this is the spot! The atmosphere was on point, there's no mistaking you're in a Tibetan restaurant! Overall, the flavours were good; service was good; price was excellent. Not sure we'd go running back there anytime soon, but we can see why the locals love it!

Amazing food, great flavour and very cheap! My only criticism was that the Dahl could have used more lentils, purely because it needed some more protein, but that's it!
Kat McRobb
I used to go here all the time and love the vibe and food so booked for a group of 10 catch up last night. All our food came out all wrong and someone had their meal 2 hours before someone's came out. We were there for 3 hours and were starving most of the time. It was actually ridiculous. At one point (when we'd been waiting over an hour) they brought out a dish we didn't order. They took it back to the kitchen and I followed just asking if we could have it anyway and they said they were going to eat it out the back. The number of times they just ignored us and walked past, and we had to go up to the counter for everything we needed. I couldn't believe it. No apology or discount. So so so disappointing. I won't be back!

Great atmosphere and service!! The pan-fried momo's are succulent and bursting with flavour!! We love coming here and enjoying the beautiful Tibetan flavours!!
Jbloom92
For someone that has never had Nepalese/Tibetan (I know it's strange!) I was very impressed. Love the beef dumplings and much prefer them to the cheap variety that I've had in the cbd. The lado for dessert was cheap and for and extra buck you should get a scoop of ice-cream.

What a great introduction into Tibetan food! I visited here with two girlfriends on Friday night. The place is decked out in colourful blankets, and other decorations allowing it to feel very authentic. The waitress didn't speak much English but was extremely lovely, and certainly looked after us. We shared all of our meals. First up the two girls had dumplings which they said were lovely, while I had a nice warming bowl of vegetable soup. Then we shared mains of a chicken stirfry dish, lamb curry, and calamari in coconut curry. The chicken stirfry dish was lovely, the lamb dish a little fatty, but the standout was the calamari. It was super fresh, cooked perfectly, and went so well with the coconut curry. YUM. I decided to try the warm rice dessert and it was ok, but not something I would order again. We all felt like it was really good home style cooking, and would happily return.

An old favourite. Used to frequent this place when it was on Smith St in Collingwood. Found it on High St Northcote and so comforting to find same amazing quality food, service and environment. Still an old favourite and will be returning many more times to come.

I don't often write reviews but this one deserves it. Went there for dinner. Had an amazing experience. Fantastic and refreshing food. Lovely staff.

Absolutely amazing. I took my partner here for an impromptu surprise birthday dinner with all his friends. We ordered the banquet and were already super happy at the value, quality and amount of food (we struggled to finish it all). Free corkage was an extra bonus. The decor is wonderful.

AND THEN at the end of the night the staff presented my boyfriend with a handwritten birthday card (they'd asked for his name when he wasn't looking) and beautiful presents from Tibet – a traditional Tibetan white scarf, prayer flags and incense. He (and the rest of us) were incredibly touched. I hadn't said a word about his birthday while booking, either.

My big thanks to Wild Yak for making my partner's birthday and our night so special! We're incredibly grateful and humbled by their hospitality and generosity.
Chardos
The momo (beef dumplings) came with this awesome tomato chutney. Only complaint is I wanted more of the chutney!

The Sha solo was also very flavourful and spicy.
Jenni Henderson
Delicious! Had the cheese momos as an entree and were recommended a beef main that was really tasty. The service was excellent and as it was freezing outside the waiter organised some take away masala tea for the trek home. Perfect night, will be back!
Chris
I had a great visit to Wild Yak Tibetan last night with my partner! Great selection of vegetarian dishes. The momos where very flavoursome and I enjoyed a cup of traditional tibetan tea. The waitress was very friendly and I love the decor of the restaurant. We even left with a yak wool shawl to complete the night! Looking forward to returning.
Hollywoodmick
Went there last night as was through northcote so we thought why not give it a crack

The decor is out there lots bright colours

Food wasn't too bad we tried a couple of entrees grilled beef momos were quite nice

Fried chicken wings were ok only gripe with both entrees were a tad bland

Chicken dish wasn't too bad chick peas and rice were nice
Thelittleblondefoodie
Go for the pan fried beef momos! I've been to Tibet and I think these momos had more flavour! Lovely ambience and really sweet staff. The soup was just okay the noodles could have been better but I'll be back for the momos.

It's cheap, but is it the best Tibetan/Nepalese representation in Melbourne?

Went with a group, quite a large group of around 40, took the whole front area, a bit of a squeeze but it's okay with friends.

There are 2 other tables with diners in the restaurant around 50, near full house.

The restaurant weren't prepared for that, even we've reserved in advance, not enough staff to serve, kitchen was running behind all night.

On the food side;

Momo Dumpling were salty and tough.

The main Calamari Solo took more than 40 minutes and another 15 at least for a Steam Coconut Rice.

2 people serving with 50 diners .... they are pleasant and doing the best they can, but can you imagine the frustration to enjoy these Nepalese offering with waiting, everyone not getting their food at the different time, mixed up orders, etc.

Have they represented Tibetan/Nepalese hospitality well?
Roger Kaputnik
We had the banquet here for $25 a head. For that you got 3 starters, 4 mains and also roti, rice and salad along with tea to finish. Well, what can I say, it was fantastic! Beautiful home cooked stuff, my fave was probably the vego dumplings, crispy and full of goodness. The place itself has a lot of Tibetan iconography and authentic music. Only real downside was they forgot the salad and music was a bit loud - we asked them to turn it down. Check it out!
Nick
This was my first Tibetan cuisine experience and it was quite nice. We tried all the recommended authentic dishes and they were tasty. May of been a little bland and left me wanting a little more but overall it was a delicious meal in a cosy atmosphere.
Tony M
Went to the yak with some friends and we were all disappointed. The food was very bland and to make matters worse the portions were very small. Clearly this is not a restaurant you go to if you are trying to build up strength to climb the 'mother of the universe". Indeed, you quickly realize that this restaurant is a place that people go to in order to rekindle their memories of traveling in Tibet or to experience the tranquility of the Tibetan culture.
Amy
Lovely, well priced food, polite service and complimentary soup for entree. Best of all, they have beautiful blankets for diners to use if they get a little cold!
Hide And Seek
Most of the menu is meat-based, but there are plenty of other options. The fried vegetarian dumplings are strikingly similar to samosas and are a decent starting point if you’re sharing your dinner with friends. Tofu curry dishes, with either a tomato or coconut milk base, are safe options if you aren’t feeling very experimental and want a belly-warming, belly-filling experience.

Awesome place to dine in.. The atmosphere was awesome. The staffs were always helpful and smiling. Lastly, the foods were delicious (felt like I was back in my homeland)
Fanfeckintastic
Wild yak. Waited over an hour for entrees to see later diners get served first, then to be confronted with poor excuses from non caring manager (the daughter)
The monos were really nice but the soup was tasteless dirty dish water lacking seasoning!!
The owner (The father) claimed not to speak English until we questioned the bill (they over charged us!) then we were given loads of English speaking attention,
This wasn't the first time we ate there but will certainly be the last,
To summarise
Reasonable price.
Some dishes ok some poor!!
Smiles on the surface with an underlying arrogance with little true care factor,
Double check the bill..!!!!!!!
Sonik_christina
Amazing!. Love the food, service, and music! My fav dish is defs the dumplings :) and the steamed bread rolls, yummy!!!
Icis
Food is great. This is our first time going to Tibetan restaurant. A friend of us suggested this place. Food choice is good. A bit spicy is you don't like spicy food. Those who like South East Asian and Indian food and can stand spicy food, you'll love this place.
We had rice, bun and bread. I would suggest rice and bun, the bread isn't that great (I was thinking of fluffy Indian naan, but it's not like that). free dumpling is great and potato (entree) is also great. Chicken with garlic and chilli is great as well. Our friend had the noodle (vegetarian) dish and he said that it's a bit boring.

Overall experience we enjoyed it, but we're not going to rush to go back there. Price wise it's great. Taste wise it's great. Service wise so-so. The waitress didn't know what is the popular dish and the cashier didn't know where we were seated after we sat kind of in front of him all night from 8-11pm.
Kylie Smith
The food is delicious and so well priced. I live in Adelaide and when I visit friends this is the place I usually want to eat at or get take away from! The Calamari Bedhai is the best dish for me. So tender and the sauce is divine.
Linx “Lincoln” Le
Great family owned restaurant!. Nice and cozy place, modest price and delicious curries! Family run, as evident by the kid waiters haha.
Megan Jane
Understated, efficient service. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Excellent quality food, tastes great. Vegan options (as well as gluten free, dairy free etc). My pick would be the coconut curry tofu dish.
Sophie
Seriously great. Really delicious food, friendly service, the food came out quickly and every course was amazing! Perfect amount of spice, lots of flavour and just all around delicious!! I LOVE IT! Will be back again and again .. And again.
Tom
Waiters are nice and friendly. Good service. Waiter recommended me chasha shokpa solo which is so hot but it's superb. Definitely try this with tingmo. So good. I'm gonna come with my gf next time. *****

Festivus. Been going here since they were at the bottoms of Smith St in Collingwood
Still my Favourite restaurant and Valentine’s day confirmed that!
The potato entrée is fantastic as to the beef dumplings
Sha Solo all the way on for me for a main and you got to have the coconut rice
Service good, very friendly
Brydie Clarke
I ate here with a friend before attending a gig at Northcote social club. We didn't have a booking but after walking past even though it looked quiet we thought we would give it a go seeing as we hadn't ever eaten Tibetan. We had wonderful service and were recommended to try the calamari coconut curry and a spicy chicken dish (can't remember the name). Both were delicious!! And great value for money. I think it would keep anyone who is a fan of thai or Malaysian food more than happy. Definitely recommended!!
Jeff
Good for the price. The dishes tend toward the bland side -- all the curries are listed as mild, and our chicken dish was very mild with no distinguishing accent. However, the calamari dish was as spicy as advertised to avoid a completely listless meal. The best feature of course is the price for a sit-down meal; even wines start at $12 a bottle. Our server, though very hard to understand and to be understood with, was attentive and friendly.

This restaurant has been a favourite for many years and one of Melbourne's hidden gems. Try the Chasha Nyermo Kyrrmo and the steamed momo....delicious!
Sookiepuddy
Wondering in Hydomel has ever actually been to Tibet. Food is exactly how I remember it from my time in Tibet. I've been here numerous times and have enjoyed each time immensely.
Paul
Very Nice. Friendly staff, very nice food, I had the beef dumplings as an entre followed by the lamb curry with steamed rice. Will visit again!
Tori Yelland Riddell
Please learn what BYOB means!

But otherwise, great food!!!!!!!
Monty
Delicious home styled food. This place is a little difficult to get into on a Saturday so we were very pleased to get a table. No wonder it is so popular, and deservedly so! We tried the fried momo, chicken soup and fried chicken wings for entree. All were delicious and fresh. The lamb curry and lemon and honey chicken as mains were substantial, tender and had great flavour. The service was friendly and very efficient. We'll most certainly return.
The_fine_diner
Our new favorite. I took my husband here about a month ago and we both enjoyed a lovely three course meal. We have since been back with our children and they loved it. We have even taken my father in law and his wife, my sister in law and her child. They all loved it. We have definitely found a place that we all can agree on. The only problem is that they don't open for lunch. The service was warm, friendly and inviting, the food was "melt in the mouth delicious" and the prices were very reasonable.

We will definitely be back.
Lilgreenwheels
Lovely every time. The quality of the food is consistently high and the service is always friendly. It's not always the roomiest place to be, particularly if you're in a large group, but it's comfortable enough and it has such a nice, calm atmosphere.
Katie
Free Tibet - so we can have more of this food!. Booked well in advance to secure a table here on a Friday night, and my god was it worth it. As a table of 7, we ordered a range of dishes, and each and every one of them was to die for. Curries were creamy, with melting meat and great spice, roti was beautifully cooked, and service was helpful, happy and frequent. Go, now. Before I take your table.
Ganaya
Reminds me of Xigaze... Very authentic!
Ashleigh86
Delicious. We've come here on a few occasions and have never been disappointed. Tofu in coconut sauce, momo and lamb curry are amazing!
Catherine L
Great atmosphere, excellent food. This is the first time I ever write a review for a restaurant, but I was so delighted to finally find a restaurant around Melbourne where waiters don't rush you to order while you're still clearly looking at the menu. I had an absolutely fantastic experience at Wild Yak. The service was really good, with friendly smiling staff. We also had time to finish our entree and chat for a few minutes before the main dishes arrived which is, again, a major plus for me. The food was absolutely great, lamb cooked at perfection without any trace of chewy fat, the roti bread was delightful, and I had the Momo which I HIGHLY recommend. As well, I highly appreciated that the place was a bit steamy (it was a very cold night) with a pleasant smell in the air, dimmed light and quiet (didn't have to shout for my partner to hear me).

In short, love it! will definitely go back
Jay Valentinja-Fran
Food was pretty average. But a very homely feel to the cooking. Service needs to be better.
Ryan Ilahi
Yumm!. The food was awesome! We had the banquet A, and all the dishes were very nice. Would be back!
Geoffrey D'Unienville
Delicious and affordable. This place gets busy on a weekend so make sure you get here early, you may pass by this quint little venue located on high street as it doesnt really throw itself out to the world but trust me its worth stopping by... The meals are reasonably priced and quite filling, and those who like abit of a spice kick will love what they get... personal favourites include chasha shopka chicken wings which are a must for anyone who loves spicy wings, also we really enjoy the sha katsa chilly beef dish and of course the momos which are like dumplings... if your in the area and feel like something different check this place out
Hospo
Have been here twice and it gets better every time! I dream of their coconut rice (not joking) it is the best. The beef with honey tomatoes and vegetables is to die for! Highly reccomended!!
Paul Doughnut
Tasty and hearty. Simple, tasty tibetan food. everything we had tasted good. the banquets look like particularly good value. $21 each for the vegetarian with around 8 different dishes.

Close to the northcote social club. I went with my boyfriend before a concert there. The food was nice but nothing to rave about in my opinion. It's not really an upmarket place which didn't bother us at all but wouldn't recommend for business meetings etc. the momos were my favourite dish. Overall i'd say 7/10.
Sean
Great tasting homecooked Tibetin Food. Amazing food - Have been here many times and will continue to go. Cant speak highly enough about the food.
Crazybuglady
Wild yak. I've never tried Tibetan food before so I have nothing to compare it to however the food at Wild Yak was just amazing, one of the best meals I've ever had, can't wait to go back. Would be great if they could do a banquet for two.
Nicole Brereton
Great cheap feed.
Rothy
Sensational!. If you like indian/sri lankan, thai/chinese/viet food then this place will rock your palette!

The beauty of the curries here is there is no aftermath (ghi hangover), the flavours are sharp, defined and clean.

Given the place was packed, the service (taking orders) was a little slow, however very friendly and genuine.

beef dish #20 is no joke, the heat was punishing me but i wanted MOAAARR!...
Julia Craig
Everything we got was delicious but if you like hot food, number 20, the chilli beef is the most popular and seriously hot tasty goodness. Friendly genuine service and a clean comfortable restaurant
Patrick Joseph
Amazing service, great prices and phenominal food. Tibetan food is one of those things you really need to go out and try, it's familiar but unique - all home cooking. Like dumplings? Highly reccomend the Momo.
Foodie
Good stuff!. The momos were good!

I was pleasantly surprised when i first dined here. Rather a humble and small restaurant but the staff are always pleasant and appear genuinely nice. The food is nice and a good price. The customer service is good as i was impressed when we were advised about the tibetan tea as most people had not often liked it. Most restaurants i've been to do not advise us of meals we may not like before hand.

I've been here a few times and have always enjoyed my dining experience here. I would definitely recommend it.
Allthefoods
Authentic, Homely and Cheap. I've been to Wild Yak a few times now and each time the service has been tremendous, the food has been delicious and the bill has been kind on the wallet! Highly recommend Wild Yak for a catch up dinner with friends or a quiet dinner date :)
Jacinta
Tibetan Sanctuary!. Don't let the dodgy website put you off, this place is definitely legit.

Every time I've been here, the service has been wonderful, although it's always more crowded in the winter (Tibetan food and drinks are either hearty, spicy or both). You'll be waiting longer to get served during winter, but it's very worth it.

The selection is really good, especially for those with dietary requirements (ethical or physical), because the traditions and religion in this part of Asia varies from different varieties of strictness, so there's food to accompany all situations!

The banana dessert is a MUST, I have to say. It's like a creamy chai sauce over a banana. That is all, but it is amazing.
Happy Traveller
Fabulous food and great service. The staff are gorgeous! We had momos, lamb curry, roti, and that cute little chopped banana dessert. Wonderful!
Sara Czerny
Very nice! I got the banquet which was fullof flavor and there was plenty to eat, the only thing that would have topped it off would have been dessert!!
Dale Fishtail
It's ok for the price but too sweet, salty and stewy... Quaint and homely but not great. 6/10

Delicious!!. Ordered take away: Vege fried dumplings, vege curry, beef with chilli, rice and roti. After hanging up the phone we were eating 15 mins later!! Great service!! Everything was bursting with flavour. I reckon we'll be back time and time again. Looking forward to dining in soon!

I was impressed by this quaint little restaurant. It was my first taste of Tibetan cuisine and I will definitely go back. The service was prompt and friendly, the atmosphere cosy and the food delightful. An interesting take on curries - somehow subtler, and the tender beef and white radish dish's sauce was exquisite. Our beef dumplings were a little dry but 2 out of 3 ain't bad, especially considering the low prices! 8/10

The food here was great! We ordered take away chicken with honey and tomatos and a vegetarian dish. Both had great flavours and generous servings. The man that served me was incredibly nice and gave suggestions that were right on the money! Their vege dumpling are delicious!!

Excellent place!. The 70's style decor and cheesy tables make this place feel like you are actually in Tibet. The family running this place were very lovely and the service came with plenty of smiles and no fuss, which I always like. We had the Tsel vege curry, Tofu in honey/mile chilli with coconut rice and Roti. Everything was so tasty and fragrant. The Tofu was super tasty and the vegetables in the curry were cooked to absolute perfection. I will definitely be returning here. The portions were big and inc BYO charges it came to $37, bargains!

Having A Good Yak. I have been coming to "The Yak" for years. The food is tasty and well priced, the service is timely and friendly. Old favourites are momos, dahl, roti and the chicken curry with coconut (I can't remember it's name). The only drawback - and it's a small one - is the one CD they keep playing.

Great food and staff! Should definitely list themselves as GF friendly!!

Wild yak is a hidden gem of inner North! Never had a bad meal. Usually get the beef curry. The best thing is it caters for everyone- veggie, meat lovers, gluten free. Great place! Will be back

Cozy, friendly atmosphere with healthy, tasty options. Service is a little slow, but the food was worth the wait.

What restaurants should strive for!. The decor might be dated given how many years this place has been open for, but that simply doesn't matter when it offers exactly what you're looking for!

Excellent, tasty and affordable food (the beef in lemon and honey sauce is divine!) and the service from the family owned business is fantastic, friendly and with a smile.

Perhaps other restaurants of melbourne with their pretentious waiters should take a look at how they should be at this place!

Make sure you book as it is very popular and there is only limited seating..

Amazing place. Totally the best there is. The staff are wonderful, generous, and endlessly accomodating. The food is totally, utterly tasty. There's a whole host of vegetarian dishes, the stand outs being the steamed momo and the vegetables with some mysterious honey and tomato sauce. Amazing.

So good! Vegetarian offerings amazingly delicious, great prices, plenty of variety, very friendly service, will definitely be back regularly.

Definitely yummy and great value!. Went there last night and had the chef's recommendation of calamari bedhai - yummo. the curry sauce for it was lovely, not too hot and not too rich and so good with rice and the roti! we also had the beef with bean thread which was delicious as well. the steamed vegie momo's also recommended. great value for the portions and taste, definitely coming back to try out the other stuff!

Top food and service. Tried WYT for the first time last night. The three of us ordered the $27 per head banquet which required a minimum of four diners. At other restaurants you have to drop a dish from the banquet if you don't have the required four people eating. Not here. It appeared we got food for four of us at a three person cost. Ob top of that there's no corkage charge if you choose the banquet. We'll be back.

My new favourite. Tried this place out on a whim and was really impressed. Lovely food, friendly service and really cheap!

Awesome cheap eats. Fresh, tasty food. Great if you like spicy dishes (mild dishes available if you don't), and a huge vegetarian menu. BYO wine. Will go again :)
