Review Yuni's Kitchen - Northcote

Villie Jo Galang
The Indonesian smell, savor the taste of Ayam, babi to the max and the customer service above and beyond. Love the place.

As Indonesian, I find Yuni's food are very authentic and delicious. Brought the whole local family here and they love it too! Definitely will be back again.
Alex Flavel
Great food with friendly service. I ordered the Nasi Campur Ayam. I called up to order and they text me when it was ready to be collected. I was greeted with a warm welcome upon pick up. The food was delicious - a great spread of a range of delicious Indonesian foods. Hit the spot!
Yum Method
Food was yummy. I liked all the little side vegetables with coconut and the pickled cucumber/carrot. Presentation is excellent and the space is really cute. However the rendang was a bit too dry on the inside and the lodeh was a bit bland in flavor. Also the sambal options wernt great, I think sambal is one of the most important things when eating indonesian food. All the vege dishes were excellent though. Will I be back? Not sure, theres lots of really good indonesian restaurants that are cheaper and taste better IMO.

Beautiful food, token to the cook/ chef behind the scene. Small portions. Rude male owner. For the latter reasons, I'd be reluctant to return or recommend.

This hidden Indonesian gem is literally hidden tucked away behind a church on High St. They served a number of of Indonesian dishes influenced by Balinese culture. Admittedly the food is not cheap but they are executed well. We ordered nasi campur and nasi bakar. The small dishes have their own unique flavour that when combined together creates this perfect harmonious meal. Food - 10 Service - 8 Vibe - 7 Price - $$$$$
Two Sheds
Good restaurant. It has good outdoor and indoor spaces. Both were quiet but very warm and uncomfortable on a Friday night without cooling. It didn’t matter. Our party of six still had a great night. We enjoyed a good range of dishes, both starters and mains. We had shared spring rolls as an entree. These were very tasty. All the mains were terrific too and a number of these were well know standards. These comprised of gado gado, nasi goreng with chicken, beef rendang, yellow rice and finally sayur lodeh, vegetable curry. This was very tasty fresh food and happily we couldn’t fault it. It was a very good meal and service was good too. Sadly there were no ice or ice buckets for wine which was disappointing on a hot night. But still a most enjoyable night.

Finally, an Indonesian restaurant with authentic foods and great taste. There are many Indonesian restaurants in Melbourne but the quality is just standard. Yuni's Kitchen is better than most. So if you are fan of foods with lots of flavours, you need to try this place. The ayam bakar is good, pepes is full of spices, and my girlfriend likes the sambal. Will come back next time!

I went here with my friend last night, the food was amazing ! Really authentic and delicious. We ate so much, great sizing and presentation, and came out in good time. Our new fav spot !! 👌🏼

First night out after 3 months & SO impressed with Yuni’s Kitchen. The food was very flavoursome, authentic & well portioned. Thank you for catering to us in these times. Shall return to try some more dishes soon!

This place is crowded in weekend, the food is a little slow, but people r nice and friendly, food is delicious ,the price is reasonable.

Nasi campur sayur, $21, good mix of everything for a interesting meal.

Several good veggo options available.

Nice small restaurant inside an old church building. Bathrooms are in a separate building up for steps.
SJ
Horrendous customer service, condescending host. After Questioning the outrageously small size of a dish that cost me $18, plus an extra $4 for rice that was meant to be on the side...instead it took up 3/4 of the container and my curry was left looking like a garnish! It didn’t even feed an 8 year old.
Although the curry had great flavour, meat was dry and therefore chewy! (leaner the cut, drier it goes).
Learn to treat your customers better! Disappointing!!!
Minh Dong
Such a ripoff place, $18 for 3 small dried pieces of meat and a spoon of curry, plus extra $4 of rice total $22 of ripoff. The owner such extremely rude, educating customer on what Indonesian food suppose to be like.

Wow! What a find!
We didn’t even know this place existed until we went for a walk down High Street and saw the sign saying Indonesian Food! 🇮🇩

My husband and I just travelled through East Java, Indonesia in August and absolutely were blown away by the food! May I add we had no experience with Indonesian food previously.

This place is traditional, home cooked and so so delicious! It took us back to our time in Indonesia!

We ordered
🍴: Nasi Bakam
🍴: Nasi Campur Ayam

The Nasi Campur Ayam was delicious! The chicken was so so soft and juicy, not dry at all! The side of the pickles complimented well. The curried egg was absolutely delicious and we have missed this curry egg so much!

The Nasi Bakam was very impressive and we couldn’t fault any dish!

My only comment on both of the dishes was the tempeh was deep fried - this isn’t how we experienced tempeh in Indonesia!

We will be back for our Indonesian feasting when we wish Indonesia! All food is halal which is also a bonus!

Follow #melbournecultureeats on Instagram & Facebook for all the best cultural food finds across Melbourne 😊

Yuni’s Kitchen serves fantastic, delicious Indonesian food that’s rare to come by outside of Indonesia. The flavours are spot on - we loved every single dish. The nasi campur is a highlight - the chicken is cooked to perfection.

While it’s perhaps in the upper range of what you’d pay for Indonesian food in Melbourne, when you think about how labour-intensive it is to make Indonesian food like this AND the quality ingredients, it’s absolutely worth it.

Take it from an Indonesian family - Yuni’s is a must visit.

Really tasty food that’s beautifully presented but the turmeric coconut rice isn’t quite the texture it is in Indonesia (we just returned & ate the best version of this rice there so the bar was high). I’d give the food alone 4 but the man that greets you & waits tables has a really odd unwelcoming demeanour that really detracted from our experience (I assumed he was having a bad day but then mentioned it to a friend who’s eaten there a few times & she said he’s always like that).

One is good Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne. The entrance just behind the church. It’s pretty authentic. It took a while for our meal to come. However, it’s worth it

Absolutely love the food and warm & friendly atmosphere. Love the duck curry!!!!
BYO and a great bottle shop across the road with decent selection.

2.5
Well it wasn’t quite worth the anticipation, buildup or drive. We got there just before 7pm on a Saturday and they were already sold out of the rissoles (which seems to be their speciality according to reviews). They’d also run out of the sour plum with tamarind soda - so not off to a good start. We started with the parcels (curry puffs) which we found to be quite bland and lacking anything to bind together the filling. A lot of their chili sauce was used on the side. The satay chicken were great - to give them credit, they were fantastic and we just loved the sauce. We also found the kway teow to be quite bland. It came with 5 prawns. Admittedly, it’s my first time having Indonesian kway teow but it lacked any real oomph or flavour. I want to point out that this meal was in no way bad, it just wasn’t very special and the dishes we had weren’t full of flavour. I’ve seen some of the cutting responses from management to less than perfect reviews, but unfortunately our experience was very average. Perhaps the inner city hipster locals love this, but it borders on bland.

I went to visit Yuni’s kitchen the other night. I’m from Sydney so I was hoping for some of Melbournes great food culture.
Yuni’s kitchen didn’t disappoint.

The restaurant is located in the food hub that is Northcote next to the church. The vibe is nice and seating is available indoor and outdoor.

The menu has got loads of authentic Indonesian options. I ordered the Duck and it was amazing. One of my friends had Gado Gado and the other had the fish. All the plates were cleared.

The restaurant is a great find and will come back again. It’s fine food with a welcoming and family vibe.

My partner and I enjoyed our visit here with Bearabbit and her partner. Yuni's has a very nice entrance, a red door to the cosy restaurant inside.

We chose a number of dishes to share, the chicken satay was very nice, juicy tender chicken with a delicious satay sauce. We also wanted to try the rissoles after reading so many reviews, they appeared to me to be more of a croquet. I was expecting your typical rissole and of course the quote from The Castle popped into my head lol These were also enjoyable too.

I have to agree with Bearrabit in that the kway teow was my favourite dish too, I am usually not a fan of the thicker style noodle but this dish had a lot of flavour and generous amount of prawns.

My least favourite dishes were the beef rendang and the curry laska, not terrible dishes by any means but I was expecting more depth in the flavours. The quality of all the ingredients in all dishes were fantastic. The sambal and yellow rice were nice additions too.

Thank you for the recommendation Two Sheds!
Hello. Imnikki
Situated on the grounds of a church, the quirky location of Yuni's Kitchen adds to the charm of this family-run eatery. The unpretentious and casual vibe of this place, and the warm service, were good indicators of the home-cooked style of food to be had here.

I dined with Simmyeats.Melb and our respective partner, and we shared the rissoles, satay ayam, beef rendang, chicken laksa and prawn kway teow. My favourite dish was undoubtedly the kway teow. Balanced flavours, chewy and firm rice noodles, and super fresh and juicy prawns. The satay ayam came a close second, with its succulent texture, aromatic grilled flavour, and the delicious peanut sauce that accompanied it. The rissoles were great too - beautifully crumbed, with gooey cheese and scrumptious fillings within.

The broth for the chicken laksa was creamy and tasty, albeit a bit mild for my liking, but I enjoyed it very much drizzled over the yellow rice as the turmeric in the rice added a depth of flavour to it. The beef rendang was delightfully tender, but similar to the laksa, the gravy was rather subdued. Which brings me to the sambal. The sambal was not too spicy, but it complemented each dish brilliantly to deliver a flavour punch.

An excellent recommendation by Two Sheds!

3.5. My first time trying Indonesian food so can only compare it to other SE Asian dishes, but I thought it was quite good. I really enjoyed the rissoles which were nicely crumbed on the outside with lovely soft gooey cheese and chicken pieces on the inside. The bakwan jagung was ok, a little on the bland side. The kway teow was quite different from the Malaysian CKT that I usually eat. The rice noodles are more stuck together and not as flavoursome as I usually like, but it was still nice. I'd be keen to try some of the rice dishes/curry next time.

My experience at Yuni’s was a good one. The Free Range chicken sold me, as I’m often very skeptical of eating meat dishes out. It was unique to be greeted by a Caucasian waiter at an Indonesian restaurant. He was passionate about providing great service. The food contains no MSG and that is a bonus. Especially when it tastes that delicious and fresh.

My partner has a penchant for Indonesian cuisine, so I decided to take him to Yuni’s Kitchen for his birthday, having had it bookmarked for quite some time.

We started with the rissoles and satay ayam. The rissoles were soft and gooey on the inside and delightfully crunchy on the outside. The satays were amazing! The peanut sauce was delicious and we could taste the smokiness of the chicken, which was really tender and juicy.

For mains, he chose the Nasi Campur Ayam while I had Chicken Laksa. His dish came with grilled chicken plus several other components where his favourites were the chicken itself and the urap (Javanese vegetable salad). My laksa had a generous amount of ingredients, with plenty of chicken and vegetables. The broth was creamy yet not too heavy.

We also shared a portion of Bebek Betutu. It is described on the menu as twice cooked duck in exotic spices and exotic was exactly what it tasted like. The meat was so tender that it fell off the bone as we picked it apart.

Speaking to Yuni, one cannot help but sense her passion and enthusiasm for cooking and her food says it all. Every ingredient on each dish tasted fresh and I love the fact that they use free range chicken.

We might not be back so soon as we live about 45 minutes away. Nonetheless, Matt and Yuni, thank you for a lovely birthday lunch.

Super cute setting and amazing fresh food! We had the laksa, gado gado and Kway Tao - all had delicious flavour. Very enjoyable meal plus it’s BYO for wine

I hear if you want to try authentic Indonesian then you got to try Yuni’s. We went on a cold winter night and the place was rather quiet. The laksa is rich and contains a lot more coconut compared to the standard Malaysian ones I’m used to. The nasi campur ayam was a collection of goodies. Beautifully presented. Highlights: trying Indonesian for the first time. Lowlights: a little disappointed with the ayam but more due to my own ordering choice!

In all honesty, I hardly ever eat at Indo restaurants in Melbourne as I’ve always seemed to have a sub-par experience. So, when I was scoping out where to eat on a Saturday night, I was honestly curious as to why this was rated so highly, so my family and I decided to try it.
We loved what we ordered - that being the Nasi Campur Ayam, Sayur Lodeh and Bebek Bali. It’s all pretty authentic and I’m pretty sure the chef is a one woman show, so paint me impressed. The only tiniest of bones I have to pick is that the venue doesn’t have the greatest ventilation so prepare for your clothes to smell like food, but it’s all part of the experience hey.
Would 11/10 recommend this as a solid indo feed if you’re out looking for one!
Jayne Branchflower
Amazing fresh laksa full of flavour! Love that they have GF on the menu too! The owner was very friendly and polite. An all round great experience. Definitely be going back there again soon!

Food was both fresh and tasty and the service prompt. The prices are on par with other similar eateries in Northcote; having said that $9 for three spring rolls was steep!

Freshly made indonesian food. I tried to find nasi bakar around melbourne, and this is the only place that i could find. 👩🏼‍🍳 As you can see on my pictures, we have 4 dishes with 2 appetisers which is bakwan and tahu isi. The bakwan is a bit plain but the tahu isi was great. Even though the price was not cheap, in general, the meal is tasteful and I highly recommend Nasi Bakar. It was a nice place to hendle my craving for tasty indonesian food. 😋 Well done Yuni’s kitchen!! ❤️❤️
Betsy
A great honest food experience. You can tell the food is made with care and pride. Was fresh, flavourful and truly delicious. I can’t wait to bring my vegetarian daughter. Thank you!

I felt homesick and that brought me to Yuni’s Kitchen. As an Indonesian, I can say this is one of the MOST authentic Indonesian food that you can find in Melbourne! Gosh, I should have known this place earlier haha. I ordered Nasi Campur, which was very good and the portion was generous. It has Balinese influence with sambal matah in the serving. The place itself is very homey. I wish they open in the city tho! Definitely recommended 💯! :)
Natasha Sonsini
Ordered the chicken Laksa which was very nice, found it a little watery for my liking as I prefer my Laksa more thick and creamy but was a beautiful flavour. Also tried my partners pastels which were very fluffy and delicious. Overall I found the food very fresh and the service very good which made the experience very intimate and authentic.
The Yabby In The Pond
Very satisfied with the food - fresh, flavorful and nicely plated. Service wise, could go up a notch as there was some attitude sensed and it would have been much more pleasant to dine if there were smiles and more politeness from the guy waitering. We appreciate the food. It would be nice to feel more welcomed.

Food was delicious! Good sized meals, and the duck curry was a stand out. The staff are super friendly and being BYO is handy too.
Value for money was good, it was around $40 per person for entrees, mains and desserts. Cute interior!

Understated but warm surroundings in the back of an old church hall. Food was a fresh & well prepared and presented. Friendly local staff sourcing food from the local Northcote butcher and Preston market. Worth a visit.

A cute little cafe next to the church , gates don’t open till 6pm
Decor is clean , inviting and not fancy
Food is delicious , a little on the pricey side for the atmosphere but very tasty

Authenticity .... including the "jam karet" - rubber watch :-)

Got there by 18:00 on the dot, a Chinese inspired wooden chair blcoking the entrance, check with the guys inside ... "two more minutes" ... okay ... so the tradition continues even in "hippy trendy" Northcote .

Uniquely located within a church compound on the main esplanade of High St, well signed with a Red "A" frame with the chef beautiful smile ... open kitchen inside this minimally converted "vintage" Church Hall, outdoor dining should you wish ... I rather be inside, hearing all the action and inhaling all these "home town" aromas.

Going by their $16.00 Gado-Gado (9/10) I shall make a return to try the rest, that peanut sauce is so close to home and even better than some Gado-Gado I've tasted in Indonesia, it even comes with blanched "Kangkung", that's extra authentic. The only thing missing was some Glutinous rice, that's just my view to balanced/cut through that sweet tasty Peanut sauce (don't modify the sauce please) ... steamed rice or Tumeric rice probably is the next best option.

Terima kasih for the gado-Gado and showcasing some of Indonesia's awesome cuisine. JT-11/02/2018.

An Indonesian warung in Melbourne? Well, yeah. On a warm summer evening, at a table under the trees, Yuni has delivered the goods. This is down-home Indonesian cooking at its best. Chicken, rice and goodies steamed in banana leaves, served with smooth coconut curried vegetables, and deep fried morsels of tofu. I had ignored this place in the past due to the setting (open air churchyard with weeds among decrepit outdoor furniture). But on the right night this place is magic. Best $20 I’ve spent in a long time.

I will not weigh in on this authentic or not debate, as I a) am not a fan of this fraught concept of 'authenticity' and b) have no idea what authentic Indonesian is like - I am just here tell you about its truly unique character, as well as delicious food! We ordered the beef rendang, gado gado, and the corn 'pillows' which were moist and crispy deep fried little things served with chilli. The rendang and gado gado were incredibly flavoursome and generously portioned. Enjoyed them a lot, though the beef was slightly dry. Staff were hands off but present enough, and the menu diverse! The courtyard is gorgeous and inside has a diner esque, shack like vibe. Holiday in Northcote! I cant wait to try more.
Michael Reilly
Voted Melbourne best Indonesian for a reason.. Cannot fault the food that comes out of this kitchen been here a good few times.

Meals are affordable tasty and usually to your table in 15-20mins BYO alcohol,

Hidden beside the church, could do alot with the courtyard space.

The first picture is Pepes Ikan (fish unwrapped I banana leaf)

Second is the how it came to the table.

Third is Nasi Campur all out on the table within 20mins.

ALWAYS happy with the quality food and customer service here
Patrick Dromgool
Stumbled upon a little suburban gem here.
The satay was some of the best ever tasted/ Ditto the sambal.
The rendang is also a thing of beauty.
Looking at the size of the Saturday night crowd, I wonder if Northcote actually deserves a chef of Yuni's ability.
Please relocate to Moonee Ponds for the foodie appreciation you deserve.

This is our second time, and it’s getting better. I think some menu has changed as well. We ordered tahu isi, nasi campur ayam, and nasi bakar ayam. And they were great !! Surely you cant compare to other Indonesian restaurants in Melbourne, nothing as good ! Pls pls keep up the good work. It’s the nearest Indonesian restaurant to us and best thing, it’s the most proper one in Melbourne. We didnt take photos of the other food we ordered. Couldn’t keep them too long even to take pictures.
Mishka
Yummy, fresh, quality food in great outdoor atmosphere. BYO allowed. However, portions are a little on the small side and service is unfriendly

Was led here by a review on Melbourne article, we drove across city from South Melbourne for the nasi goreng. Had chicken satay for entree, nasi goreng, mi goreng and es campur (dessert). We had high expectation and the food, service, and ambience exceeded expectation. Beautifully prepared food. I'm already having withdrawal!

Presentation and flavours to die for. The aromas coming from the kitchen was a tease and then the food that followed did not disappoint. What a treat! Looking forward to coming back to try the whole menu!!!!

This is one of my favourite places on high street: the soups and curries are delicious, there’s a ton of Indonesian dishes that you can’t find anywhere else in the area, and the husband and wife team are super lovely.
The fish in banana leaf is unbelievably good!
Nusy Febrica
I've been to this restaurant many, many times and I always left feeling satisfied!

I have tried the following:
- Bakwan: the corn fritters are super crunchy and yum
- Bebek Bali: a lovely surprise in a wrap! Unlike other ducks I tried, it's not cold inside which means it's made to order
- Bebek Betutu: so so yum and original
- Sambal: Absolutely to die for!

Keep up the good work mba Yuni & Matthew!

Also note to all, the portions are big and you can ask for extra sambal if you like! :)

Another beautiful meal at Yuni's. Great food and wonderful service. I recommended Yuni's to my Indonesian friends and they love it. Would highly recommend 👍
Lindon Morris
Have been to Yuni's a couple of times and each was awesome. My partner and I love travelling to Bali, but the food right here in Melbourne is better than any we've had overseas.
Mel Mulyadi
Whenever feeling homesick or need a fix of Bali with friends we head over and all is good. Great selection of items on the menu. Nice atmosphere and attention to detail.
Jo Barden
We travel from Mornington for Yunis amazing food! The chicken satay skewers are to die for and they have a great range of vegetarian dishes as well. Service is always super friendly - you guys rock!

Went here to try a different Indonesian restaurant. Great thing about this restaurant. It's actually a proper sitting down restaurant. Price wise is a bit more expensive than the usual Indonesian restaurant....but compared to usual other restaurants, they are still cheap. Food was delicious. Service was attentive. I was laughing at some comment saying because there were not many Indonesiasn people dinning there that it's not aithentic. I can gurantee that its authentic. I can see why someone prefer going to cheaper place. Most indonesian restaurants in Melbourne are very cheapbut they wont give you good service or nice portion size. Yuni gives you this and being a foodie myself, the food tastes delicious. If you are after cheap big portion serviceless place but don't care about taste...then this isn't a place for you. I'll definitely come back again.
Nick
Brilliant quality, chill venue and tasty food. Brilliant service and Yuni is so smiley! Can't wait to go back. Greatest Indonesian in Melbourne!
Grace Edis
This was the most amazing food we have had on high street. I don't rate often... So this has to be good to do this! My partner claims it to the the best food on high street!!!

Love coming here with my family because of my Indonesian background. I either go for the laksa or the mie goreng. Both are just super tasty and fill me up so well. My dad is always having the big chicken plate and mum likes the nasi goreng. Best part is everyone can have their meals at the spice level that suits them. I don't go for heaps of chilli but my mum goes crazy with the sambal they put on the table. The inside is pretty interesting. Some sort of really old church building, pretty different from other Asian places we go to. Cool music as well.
Angel Khong
Rissoles were good, Gado Gado and Bebek Bali were okay, Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken) was so bland and tasteless (that I had to ask my friend to finish it as it was just not worth the calorie intake!). Chilli sambal was good but not spicy at all. Good enough if you want a quick dinner and happen to be in the area otherwise try Ayam Ria Penyet, Kedai Satay, Fat Oma, Warung Sambal Ijo, Garamerica (once they reopen - they're only closing temporarily as they're relocating) for proper Indonesian food - these places are almost always packed with Indonesians, unlike Yuni's (and that speaks for itself). Front house Matt confirmed that the cuisine was adapted more to the general public's taste than that of Indonesians specifically. Ambience is also quite poor especially for a restaurant where a main meal cost around $20; it felt more like that of a cheap dumpling eatery in the CBD.
Timinmelbourne
This place was recommended to me by a fellow reviewer called Matthew with thanks 😊

This is the first time for a while that I've been to an Indonesian restaurant and it was worth visiting. The restaurant is next to a church in what looks like an original school house. Maybe for Sunday school?

Anyway the service was good with a $2 BYO surcharge pp which was ok.

The food was really good, we had twice cooked duck in banana leaves which was amazing! Then it was Mi Goreng which was equally as good.

We also shared a chicken laska, and I don't think Coles Coconut Milk makes the grade. The laska tasted like milk and it lacked a punch... literally! So I asked for some fresh chilli and this helped yay!! Hahaha

I'm not sure why restaurants are reluctant to use chilli but I like it.

What a great start to the weekend, happy days 😊
Food Baby
A small space inside a converted church, Yuni's has that casual family home cooked vibe. The laksa was perfect, with perfectly balanced coconut curry flavours, and well presented. It's the best I've found thus far in Melbourne. The fried banana desert with rhubarb sorbet was also a delight. The satay ayam entrée wasn't bad. The service here is excellent, and they are more than happy for you to BYO (complete with local bottle shop suggestions).

Had a great meal last Wednesday night at Yuni's Kitchen! Had nasi goreng which was spicy and lovely. Love this place, great atmosphere and the staff are all helpful and nice! Keep it up guys

Best Indonesian in Melbourne!
I love Yuni's!
My trusty foodie friend recommended it to me and since trying it a few months ago I have been back again and again.
I can't go past the vegetarian laksa. It's fresh, fragrant and packed with veggies and much lighter and healthier than the usual laksa experience.
There's a choice of incredible starters. I recommend the tofu and the water spinach!
I have also tried the non-vego options which are ridiculously good. The beef rendang the BEST I have had in Melbourne. By far. Yum.
I'm also a big fan of their sambal and love that you can keep on asking for more. It's the perfect addition to an already delicious meal.
Special mention to the incredible teas which the owner gets locally and freshly squeezed juices.
Thank you Yuni's and see you soon!

Run by loving couple Matt (Front-of-House) and Yuni (Back-of-House) who are really passionate in what they are doing and always make their guests feel welcome.

What an awesome time we had at Yuni's Kitchen over the weekend! Fabulous authentic food, fabulous service, fabulous ambience! We are Indonesian and came to know about this only about half year ago through word of mouth. We've only been here 6-7 times as we live an hour away. If we live closer, we probably would have been dining in here once a week.
Each time we've been here, we always left happier than we arrived. Don't expect a hundred choices of dishes here. There were probably just about 8 entress and 15 mains but all were really authentic and have been perfected.

We were so surprised reading the previous poor review. As mentioned, we are Indonesian ourselves and we've been to many Indonesian restaurants in Melbourne. Amongst us and our Indonesian community, whenever Yuni's Kitchen was mentioned, the thought of great food that we had here always brought smiles on our faces.

A must try - Chicken Satay, Tahu Isi, Ayam Bakar (spice charcoal grilled chicken), Bebek Betutu (balinese twice-cooked duck wrapped in banana leaves).. Or try the Nasi Campur Ayam (indonesian style thali/bento consists of turmeric coconut rice, ayam bakar, light veg curry and a variety of accompaniments) or Nasi Campur Sayur (vegetarian version). The home-made 'sambal' here is FABULOUS!!

Thank you Yuni's Kitchen team for sharing your passion and love in food!
Ryan Ilahi
Not an authentic Indonesian place which was a major let down. First Indonesian place I've been to which didn't have sambal. Food was made from fresh ingredients.
Jamie
Went with a group of five people. This place is tucked away behind a church off High St and easy to miss, but a great discovery when you find it! It's a small venue inside, so not over crowded. There is also an outside space which will be great in summer.
The food was really good and a lot to choose from. My only comment would be that dishes are not great for sharing in a larger group. Probably better for one to two people, but then I guess that probably should go without saying. That said, what we did choose was very good!
Overall a great experience.

Have been wanting to try Yuni's kitchen for a year and finally visited it ystdy. The food was so close to the food back home in Indonesia. Especially the satay ayam, it was so good my friends and I have to order another portion and still did not have the chance to take a picture of it. The owners, Yuni and her husband, are also very sweet and friendly. Would def come back very soon.

Went to Yuni before the magic festival show, I must say my partner and i really love the food there. We were addicted to the chili! I had the Nasi Campus Ayam which i really love, the food is flavoursome!, lots of different sensations, different texture, it feels like happy fireworks in my mouth! My partner's mi goreng was also pretty yummy, we were so happy with our food that there wasnt any time/room for talking.

I took my family on a Thursday afternoon for a nice lunch, and I have to say: what an unforgettable experience!
If it wasn't for Zomato, I would never have known that there was a restaurant in a church, hidden from the busy main street (High Street). A sign outside said "#1 Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne" and I definitely agree!!

Upon entering the small, cozy, home-like restaurant, a man (owner I think?) greeted us and gave us menus after we sat down. We ordered the lunch specials, which were chicken Laksa, chicken Kway Teow and Rendang curry. We also ordered Kang Kung on the side.
All the food came out together within 10 minutes and I guarantee, this is what authentic Indonesian food tastes like.
I've been to Indonesia once and the food there is beautiful. Yuni's Kitchen takes me back to that stunningly beautiful place with its equally fabulous food.
I can't really describe the flavours. There was so much going on. The chicken was succulent. The beef in the rendang curry was tender and juicy, with the delicious curry that made us order another bowl of rice to finish.
Everything in Yuni's Kitchen screams AMAZING!!! So if you are ever on planet earth and happens to be in a place called Melbourne, Australia, please go out of your way to come to this place. It is heavenly and if you don't like it then you're allergic to all things good in life.

These guys are just fantastic. Laid back, genuine flavours. Even shaved ice dessert which brought back happy holiday memories. Only regret I had barely any battery life on my phone to share pics of the meal we had. NOT TO BE MISSED!

Have not ordered anything other than the migoreng but it is Devine. Really lovely service and consistent. Portion sizes for takeaway could be bigger but I usually order two and I'm not a huge eater.

This place surely the best Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne! I ordered risoles as starter and nasi ayam campur for main course. Risoles fried perfectly whereas the perkedel did not exactly meet my exepectation but overall everything are perfect in my preference! The portion for nasi ayam campur indeed really big, save your tummy and not to mention it is worth the price! Defo come back ✌🏼

How did we not know about this gem? We love our Indonesian but don't eat it much in Australia as we haven't found anywhere we have enjoyed. Spotted an article on Broadsheet that was only 5 minutes away and booked in for the next weekend. We had satay for entree and Nasi Campur and Mie Goreng . Food was all amazing and service was great. Can even BYO! Will be regulars now!

Had the pleasure of visiting this amazing place again over the weekend. As usual the fare was delish as was the service and quality of food. I only have two "slight" concerns...one, I felt that the price of the laksa is a little overpriced (although the taste overshadows this concern) and the lovely Matt (at times) hovers around the table chatting for too long...LOL...Otherwise this place is amazing and we will continue to visit. Well done!!

OMG. The best Indo food in Melbourne. Best Laksa in town and the satay chicken to die for. All food is sooooo fresh. This is not our first visit. Every time we bring friends, they are blown away by the quality, flavour & freshness of the food. BYO a bonus. Excellent customer service.

I was very impressed with my meal and my wife also she said the closest thing to eating at home in Indonesia . We will be coming back again with friends now that we have tried the meals . Great atmosphere and nice staff . Wait time was good 👍👍👍👍👍👍

I've walked past the board claiming Yuni's as the best in Melbourne countless times, and finally dropped by for lunch with a few friends familiar with this cuisine.
It is stuated alongside a church within a peaceful, sunny courtyard; inside, two cheerful ladies prepared the day's fare whilst a gentleman seated us with courtesy.
We started with corn fritters, crispy and bursting with fresh corn and cilantro. It's sweetness contrasted well with the tangy chilli jam provided. The vegetarian mee goreng also impressed - it had a balance of sweet, savoury and slight sourness which could only come from the expert use of tamarind and soy. My friend took one look and almost decided she didn't want to share after all!
The nasi campur ayam was almost too pretty to eat. Around the mound of yellow rice were a variety of Indonesian treats, from a tender chicken maryland and satay with peanut sauce, a chilli egg, mixed vegetable pickles and more. We tasted a bit of everything, and unanimously agreed that it was fantastic. The rice was fragrant and good enough to eat by itself. Only the urap sayur were too sweet.
The only slight let-down was the vegetable curry. Although the vegetables were well-cooked and plentiful, the curry sauce was slightly watery and tasted mostly of coconut. Perhaps we arrived before it was quite ready?
Presentation and service was top-notch, with the gentleman replacing plates when necessary, and we got the feeling he loved his role.
We shall return!

Yummm!! brought me straight back to Bali! Love the outdoor area, some people hate it but I don't mind the casualness of it, especially on a warm night.

This place is exquisite and it deserved to be way busier than it was on a Wednesday but maybe it's because it's hidden off the Main Street in the grounds of a church. Everything was delicious, the staff are really friendly. If you're a bit precious about decor (you could be sat under a tree or on a table with plastic table cloth) then you need to put that aside and come just for the food because it punches above it's weight.

Entree - Rissoles were yummy with cheesy, chicken and vegee goodness!

Main - Gado Gado was okay but had a bitter combination. The Masi Camur Ayam gave a mixture of foods which blended well together for a satisfying feeling.

Atmosphere - Nastled deep off high street next to the church with a chilled feeling and garden to eat in.

What a great find for us. Indonesian food that tastes like it should.
Great service, fresh food cooked to order, good serves and reasonably priced.
Sensational flavours. So authentic. Wow Wow Wow
Having just come back from another trip to Indo where the common tourist fare is very ordinary and boring. We constantly ate at road side Warungs where the food always amazed us.
Thanks Yuni's for being brave enough to serve up your fantastic menu. 5 stars 24/7.
We will be back and back and back.

What a ripper of a place! Amazing food, atmosphere & service. We were squeezed in without a booking on a Friday night-just! Would recommend booking. We had beef rendang and the nasi. Could not fault the meals!

I have to say Yuni's is way overrated as an authentic Indonesian restaurant. After reading the reviews, I was expecting to be blown away but the food was pretty ordinary, the atmosphere wasn't great and the service was okay. I had the Nasi Goreng and the prawns were overcooked. It had peas, carrots and corn in it which made it overly sweet. They are not ingredients I would expect to find in a typical authentic nasi goreng. I asked for it to be really hot and spicy and it hardly had a bite to it. My partner had the Gado Gado and was even more disappointed than I was. I suppose if someone doesn't know Indo food that well they may be impressed but we definitely left unimpressed. We also asked to have the Satay and Cendol but they didn't have them at the time. We won't be going back again.

Finally got to try this place. First in for a Sunday lunch. Yuni and Mat are great hosts. Food is simple,
fresh and really tasty. Cooked with love using fresh ingredients. Liked the meal so much I did the cooking class . Recommend .

I love Indonesian cuisine and have been wanting to try this restaurant for more than 2 years. I have finally arrived in Melbourne and my first stop - Yuni's Kitchen. The meals we have just finished are second to none. Absolutely delicious and flavours are amazing. The owners Matthew and Yuni - fantasic place. Thank you. Ill be back before I leave Melbourne.
23/12/16 Returned to celebrate my birthday with some local friends who had not been before. They were absolutely blown away with the food. They will all be back and bringing their friends. Thank you for an awesome night.
Hits the spot! The gado-gado and bebek bertutu we ordered tasted so good. The gado-gado has fresh simple vegetables coated with thick yummy peanut sauce. The Bebek (duck) was so tasty! Marinated in very rich spices and cooked wrapped in banana leaves. The banana leaf wrap makes all the difference. They give you extra sambal if you like to turn the heat up. We enjoyed it so much that we are already planning our next trip.

After reading the reviews here I was so keen to try this place out. The place is cute, and you can find the red door easily once you've found the uniting Church. I was actually pretty disappointed with the place. We waited close to an hour to get our food and the place wasn't busy at all. And the food? I must admit this place served better food than other Indonesian places. But better doesn't mean best. Would I come back? The food didn't wow me enough to make up for the long wait.
Service 10/10
Food 7/10
Speed 1/10
Amazing food, had the deep fried chicken tofu balls, the Mie goreng and rendang. Amazing flavours and amazing service. Definitely going back to try it all.

I personally think this is the best Indonesian food in Melbourne. It's clean, it's got good atmosphere, good service and most importantly great food. Most Indonesian food in Melbourne are delicious but there's just a lot of MSG in it, not this one though. Yuni's Kitchen is totally MSG free, and I recommend the Sate Ayam, so good!

Best kept secret in Melbourne. Forget Chin Chin & all the other over priced Asian fusion. Yuni's is where it's at. Order the Gado Gado, laksa & veggie curry plate. Can't go wrong.
Green Gourmet Giraffe
If you see the sandwich board advertising Yuni's Kitchen outside the Uniting Church on the High Street, it is a pleasant place to get away from the High Street bustle and enjoy a bit of piece and quiet with some nice food.

Really liked the vibes at Yuni's Kitchen. Reminds me a lot of "lentil as anything" but with tastier food. The casual atmosphere paired with mouthwatering food made for a relaxing afternoon. Their outdoor courtyard is a perfect space to have lowkey cathup with friends or a hidden gem to impress a casual date. Staff were friendly and put us at ease despite us coming in just as they were closing up. Will be coming back to try more!

Mbak Yuni has done a smashing job nailing all the food we ordered. If you're after an authentic Indonesian food, great flavour, family-style service and reasonable price and serving size, this place is definitely a must visit one. They're ready to satisfy your cravings.

Situated on bustling High Street and housed within the Northcote Uniting Church's grounds, Yuni's Kitchen is a favourite haunt for Northcote locals (and worth the travel for everyone else!). The restaurant is part of the plethora of delicious eateries in Northcote and has, in its short existence, firmly entrenched itself as one of the best Indonesian eateries in Melbourne.

Great authentic Indonesian food. It's nice to eat in a casual setting but with genuinely good food that doesn't leave you feeling sick from too much oil and additives. Service was great and meals were the perfect size. Wouldn't hesitate to go back.

So happy to find another great Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne, especially if it's as authentic as Yuni's Kitchen. I went there for a friend's bday and I enjoyed the food very much. The chicken satay with peanut sauce was amazing. Had the Nasi Campur with grilled chicken and I couldn't complain anything because it was fantastic. Price is a bit more expensive than other Indo restaurant but the portion here is huge.

I grew up with my mums food. Which is Javanese food- this Indonesian spot is one good experience. Pretty authentic.

I've been to many Indonesian places in Melbourne, and it's nothing like this place.

good job miss.Yuni

Delicious!! We came for dinner with our 3 young children and we're very impressed!! The sate chicken was the best I've had in a long time! The kids loved the spring rolls and yellow rice. We ordered Nasi Campur, Rendang and Nasi goreng. Everything was delicious! Service was friendly and it's a great place to take the kids. We will definitely return to try the rest of the menu.

Took five adults and two babies to explore the menu on Saturday night. Had one of everything from the entree menu, 2 classics and 5 mains. Loved the food, very authentic. Servings were well plated and service was down to earth and pleasant. Loved the Sambal so much we took home some jars! Will be back when we're in the area.

I have walked past Yuni's Kitchen many times in the past, but never had a chance to try it until last week. Boy, oh boy...I wish I had tried it a lot sooner! The atmosphere was cozy and friendly without being pretentious. The service was attentive and warm. But the food....it's glorious! There were 6 of us, my husband and I and his two friends with their kids. Since I was the only Indonesian in the group, I was given a task to order for everyone...no pressure, really. I ordered Risoles for appetizer, and Beef Rendang, Bebek Betutu, Steam Fish, and Gado-gado plus 3 extra servings of yellow rice for the mains. They all were really delicious! It's authentic and flavorsome. Bebek betutu was tender and cooked to perfection while the steam fish was fresh and tasty. My husband loved the rendang so much, he didn't want to share it with us. The price was reasonable and the portion was generous. We will definitely come back!

I've lived in Northcote 5 years and have only recently discovered Yuni's Kitchen and am very glad I did. Their courtyard is lovely to sit in on a summer evening and their food is fresh and yummy. I recently ordered the Nasi Campur Ayam (pictured) and it was scrumptious, their corn fritters and gado gado salad are also a favourite. I am very much looking forward to trying the new menu :)

We've been reading the review of this place and we finally got a chance to try. The restaurant is located beside Northcote Uniting Church. We went on Friday around 8 - 9pm, most people took the outside seating area but there was no one inside. We ordered Nasi campur, Tahu isi and Sate ayam, all for $35. The dish has an authentic taste, possibly the best tahu isi and sate ayam we ever tried in Melbourne. We gave 3.5 rating due to the price but we'll go back to try their new menu in few weeks time.

Delicious Indonesian food in a relaxed atmosphere, with great friendly service. Will definitely be coming back! Loved the hidden away feel of the place.
