The Wagyu hot pot is one of the best things I've eaten all year.
I had a lovely dinner at Yokoso. I shared all dishes with two other friends and we all enjoyed each and every one of them. The wagyu beef balls and the tempura were our favourite. The sparkling sake is an excellent drink!
On arrival, the staff were extremely friendly, greeting us immediately. The banquet is taken out with a great organisation and the cuisine was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend the Teriyaki Chicken, the chefs take those flavours and cook it to perfection.

Food is outstanding, as is the service.
Sure, I could tell you about how the Wagyu is actually Wagyu, or the fact that they have a Szechuan-inspired dish on the menu that pays tribute to the great Chen Kenichi’s dad, but sometimes...that is all. Can’t recommend this place more highly. If you’re done with pizza, burgers and goddam BBQ, get yourself into Yokoso Izakaya.
(Disclaimer: True rating is 4.5 however on Zomato this is closer to a 4). Personally, my favourite dish at Yokoso has to be their okonomiyaki. You may as well deliver a truck of this stuff to my house! It’s a savoury pan-fried pancake, which in this case, happens to be vegetarian. It is topped with fish bonito flakes, which flap (kinda creepily) in the wind. A kid on the table next to us got a little scared because he thought the food was living!
But while it’s not living, the okonomiyaki is a beast of a dish. The crispiness of the batter makes it a delight to bite into, while the Japanese mayo and okonomiyaki sauce are just irresistible! The okonomiyaki at Yokoso is quite thick so we struggled a bit to eat it with chopsticks. But I happily pushed through the struggle. WHO KNEW VEGGIES COULD TASTE THIS GOOD?!?
Went for dinner with some friends and we were all impressed with the quality of the food and service. We will definitely be back again and would not hesitate to recommend.
This has to be my current Favourite Japanese place in Melbourne right now!. I’ve probably been four times in the last 6 months. I usually never order mains I like to order at least 6-7 of their smaller dishes and share them. The service is great and their food never disappoints. I honestly craveeee their beef tataki! It is a sensational mixture of the beef and pickled onions. YUM will always be back.
We liked it. It’s a 3.7. It’s seating in booths. The maximum numbers for a group here are six really. We had six and it was a bit squeezy. Eight would present major problems.
That’s the seating sorted then. We all had the entree platter which included tempura prawn, a crispy Wagyu beef (their term), gyoza, an oyster, chicken in batter and a piece of sashimi. For main we all yakiyaki platter with yakitori beef, chicken, pork, vegetable and mushroom. The yakitori sauce was lovely and the whole thing worked well with the fluffy rice we ordered. We were advised that two serves of the food was enough for six but we thought it was a bit light on and that we needed another main.
We were still hungry and had dessert. A yuzu panna cotta which was the highlight of the meal together with the crispy Wagyu. We also had a pancake which we thought was a bit doughy.
Reasonable wine list here. We had a Dal Zotto rose which was a lovely accompaniment to the food
We liked the food and the place. We’d happily return and try more of the dishes.
Friends had been raving about this place and brought us along to see what all the fuss was about. We weren’t disappointed, the food and service was some of the best I have had in the area.
For starters we ordered gyoza - perfect ratio of filling to crunchy skin, crispy wagyu beef - crunchy juicy models on a bed of kewpie based sauce, tempura veggies - you could taste how clean the oil was and finally the chicken yakitori. Holy moly. The yakitori were outstanding. So tender and juicy, with just a hint of charcoal char. I could have eaten like 10. Easily.
For main I had the chicken curry on rice and was surprised at the complexity of flavour in the sauce. Smoky and spicy with unbelievably tender, juicy chicken pieces. Also tried my partners teriyaki chicken which was super flavoursome. Don’t know what they do to the chicken here at Yokoso Izakaya but it is well worth checking out for yourself.
Food was divine and service was very attentive and friendly, lovely ambiance and clean. We will be back!
The food was a decent serve and the chocolate spring roll was really yummy!
Yum yum yum....the food is divine and service was very attentive.....soo happy they opened a restaurant in Northcote.....can't wait to go back
Came here some friends with no booking on a Saturday but the staff organised a table for us without any hassles. A good start.
The service was pretty attentive and friendly thought the whole evening. They did charge us initial for a bottle of wine rather than a glass but they were very apologetic about it.
The food was decent. We only ordered tapas style food which the menu accommodates well but the mains looked alright from looking around at other tables.
One thing I did really like was the crockery and the overall styling of the place was pretty pleasant too. It was a nice place to sit, chat and eat some Japanese food too of course !
Overall, not bad for a dinner choice on a whim and would probably return in future.
Food was great. More vegetarian options would be good though. Lost point for overly attentive service. The lovely waitress came back 4 times to take our order when were made it clear we wanted a drink first. Overall it's a lovely restaurant with a great ambience.
Awesome food, sashimi platter was delicious and very fresh! The place was slightly dark which gave a nice vibe. Place was a bit busy since it was a Friday night but we didnt need to wait that long.
Jazz music in a Japanese restaurant was an unfamiliar sound but I liked it. Warm ambient lighting with atmospheric lanterns but there was a chill in the air that was positively glacial despite heaters displaying a temperature of 26 degrees. Felt more like minus 26. Still the staff were friendly and the ambiance was strong. I enjoyed the evening overall but the food was hit and miss. To start we tried the miso eggplant which had a nice flavour but was a little too charred for my liking. I loved the delicious salmon skewer but the prawn skewer was extremely salty. My main was the wagyu salad which was quite lovely. The meat was beautiful and tender and I adored the delightful dressing. Worked out at about $35 a head which was pretty reasonable so I wouldn't be adverse to returning here and checking out the sushi at a time when I'm not dieting and avoiding deliciously evil carbs
Yokosu isakaya is a hidden gem on the streets of northcote that I never looked at twice when driving past. I have recommended this restaurant to so many for it's great quality food with beautiful flavors and presentation. My partner and I ordered a lot of food and the bill was rather cheap. A beautiful Japanese restaurant with really friendly staff and was a great visit! Need to visit more restaurants like this one
A solid local Izakaya. Great fit out, friendly and attentive service, and a large menu that covers all the usual suspects. All our dishes were well executed. Kudos for a well thought out drinks list with a good selection of sake.
A very appealing and bustling Japanese eatery with a really extensive menu. We had tori kara fried chicken, gyoza, sashimi, wagyu and pork belly skewers, and spider roll. Service was efficient and friendly. Will definitely be back!
All our favourites featured and the okonimiyaki was one of the best I've ever had. Bright, vibrant with attentive but not intrusive service. Great to have a new local Japanese. 😊
Nice decor Japanese dining, friendly and attentive staff.
Chargrilled king fish, a little dry on fish, also only have some dry greens on the plate, no sauce at all, so overall can be quite a dry texture dish.
The crab sushi roll was great, nice flavour of the crab mixture. Sesame which stocked on the rice roll lift up the flavour overall.
The wagyu beef skewer was very tender, nicely cooked and taste good. Pork belly skewer was great too. Like the sauce wasn't too salty.
The sashimi was fresh, good portion of it.
Overall nice Japanese restaurant and glad to have another dining choice close to home.
Delicious food, great service. We loved it tonight. Only thing it's missing is the excellent Japanese 'Orion' wheat beer...but the wine list is fine☝️️.
Cracking Japanese food. Lots of classics done really well. Awesome restaurant fit out. Feels like an izakaya in the hear of Tokyo. Busting to get back.
Fantastic addition to the neighborhood. I ate here twice in a fortnight because I was so happy to have a local izakaya. Staff are lovely and there's a good selection of big and small dishes.
So happy to have Yokoso in Northcote. Homely decor makes it feel like it's been part of the neighborhood for years.
A great selection of small plates for sharing as well as main dishes. The crunchy wagyu balls were a big hit with the kids. Wine is reasonably priced and good service. Will end up being a local favorite for us.
Been a regular at the original in Moonee Ponds and pretty excited by one opening up in Northcote. Nasu dengaku, gyoza, yakiyaki all delicious. Friendly service and accommodating and understandingfor our semi-house trained toddler!
At long last Northcote gets an izakaya. Fantastic food. Great variety. Great setting. We ordered entree platter, yakiyaki platter, spider rolls, salmon California rolls and double salmon rolls. All were excellent.
A welcome addition to Northcote, which has always been a bit light on for good Japanese restaurants*.
We got the cheese katsu, okonomiyaki, and grilled salmon which were all excellent. Our dessert wasn't quite as good though - the cinnamon pancake was a bit tough. But overall we were very happy.
*Dojo Ramen is really good. KoiKoi I've not tried.
Loved the banquet, the food was very fresh and delicious. Staff were friendly and attentive however could have probably waited a bit longer in between courses as we hadn’t finished yet when the next one was placed on our table. Will definitely recommend and we will be back!
Yummy food at a reasonable price, and in a great location. The meals are consistently good and dining in at the restaurant is fast and convenient. I was also ordering from here through lockdown and it was just as good!!
Superb! Exceptional service with ever smiling, hlepful and accomodating staff. Place was clean, simile but themed with big floating and lit paper fish. Good was well presented, traditional but the sauces were super delicious. One of the best Japanese Restaurants yet.

I dined with some friends at the Northcote venue. The beers were excellent and fresh, we opted for an assortment of starters and main dishes. Unfortunately we didn't get the chance to taste their signature sushi due to the unavailability of some products on the daily market. I'll be back.
I always get picky when it comes to Japanese food, having lived in Japan and falling in love with the cuisine, but Yokoso get it pretty close! Presentation, service and menu options are great. I always opt for the okonomiyaki (which is cut into triangular pieces - bit unique!), and the bbq skewers have that char grilled flavour. Always consistent and my local go-to on list of Japanese eateries in the north!
This place is consistently good. The food is delicious, fresh and tasty. Staff are very friendly & accomodating.
Favourite local Japanese! Been here more times then I can count.
Spider roll and salmon sushi roll are very delicious for entree and can't go wrong with the Japanese curry or teriyaki for main.
Best Japanese I have had in a LONG time. The spot has a warm and welcoming energy and the staff are lovely. Didn’t have 1 bad dish and we gave the menu a good crack. Highly recommend.
