Takeaway
Veggie ramen, $14.90, soup is flavoursome, noodles don't travel so well for takeaway as quite clumpy.
Sesame ramen, $13.50, light sesame flavour and fairly simple dish.
We came across this restaurant on Uber and had a wonderful Japanese dinner! Everything was well packed and still hot on arrival. The entrees were all very good including panko crumbed squid (amazing!!!), JFC, cheesy rolls. The shoyu and tan tan men ramens were simply delicious. One of the better ramens we've had in a while. Can't wait to go back post restrictions to dine in. Recommended.
Good ramen and friendly service.
Wow! First time coming here and will definitely be back! The ramen was great-lots of flavour and right amount of spice. The fried garlic was such a bonus with the edamame 🤤 service was quick and staff were nice. Super cool vibe in the beer garden also. Will be back to try more!
Best tan tan men ramen ive had! Great flavour and good broth to noodle ratio! I got takeaway but when picking it up saw that the space is very relaxed and welcoming!
Lovely place for a amazing ramen. Very quirky cosy ambience. The ramen is very tasty. Great choice for vegetarians. Starters were amazing too. Tried the spicy veggie ramen which was full of flavour. The veggie ramen had a bit of nutty coconut kind if broth. Not sure what was the broth made of. Bit creamy. Wasnt very impressed with that. The gyozas and noodles were well cooked. Sure will visit again.
Discovered this place while walking past. Retro Japanese isakaya interior is very welcoming , creates a nice warm isakaya style ambiance.
Beef cheek stew melts in your mouth and stew has that rich miso taste.
Chicken karage is crunchy outside & juicier inside , perfectly matching with miso-mayo with hint of ponsu citrus sauce.
Don’t forget to try the rice beer it was so smooth & flavorful.
They have Hibiki & other Whiskey for really cheap price tag.
Overall taste, quality, ambiance & service against price gives an overall score of 4.8*
Consistently amazing food. Quick service. Attentive and friendly staff. With a large drinks selection and a very solid menu, it’s easy to try something new on each visit. Always a pleasure to go to the Dojo.
The ramen here was absolutely fantastic. The broth was full of flavor and was perfect on a cold night. Ended the meal with the green tea cheesecake and loved it. Everything was reasonably priced and the staff here were very friendly. Will be back.
A great local hangout that is packed to the rafters on a Tuesday! It's a good sign when the restaurant is busy on a weekday. Noodles were perfectly chewy and broths flavoursome. The chili ramen weren't as spicy as expected - very mild.
I’m dreaming of Shoya Cha Shu.. In the eloquent words of George Columbaris “It’s YUMMY”.. god I can’t stop thinking about how good it is. Their karaage and gyoza are also ‘yummy’ and the edamame as simple a dish as it is - is warm and so nice and salty. A lovely place for a solo arvo feast or dinner spot with your pals which means you can share a bunch of starters and then make everyone get food envy because the cold soba noodle is the food of choice for those in the know!! Also try the spicy ramen.
What a treat! Really enjoyed our meal here. Stand outs were the okononiyaki (modern twist on a stick!), JFC (Japanese fried chicken), & of course a large, hearty bowl of ramen (we just had the “basic” shouy)! Delicious & reasonably priced ($75 for 2 incl drinks/alcohol). Not the place to hang around all night (they’re busy so they subtly move you on & the seats have no back supports which makes them uncomfortable) but the food MORE than makes up for it.
Dojo, is my go to Ramen 🍜 .
Tan Tan Ramen all the way!! And the fried chicken is 👌
Cool aesthetic inside and I noticed there is a beer garden outback. The crew are friendly and food came out nice and quick.
One thing though, each time I eat this Ramen I feel like salty sea dog afterwards.
Dojo ramen is located on the busy high street in Northcote, it gives that hipster in the suburbs vibe for some reason haha. The restaurant was quite busy and it seems like a lot of locals come here. We ordered the Shoyu and Tan tan men. It was okay, I think the broth is certainly lighter than other ramen places. The Tan Tan men lacked that spicy punch even though it was supposed to be “karate kick spicy.” I feel like there are better ramen place in the city, however this isn’t too bad for ramen in the suburbs.
This cozy little restaurant serves lovely Japanese food. It is well priced and for solo diners (as I was) you can sit at the low bar area looking into the open kitchen. The staff were super friendly, the food was yummy and the ramen very flavoursome. I also recommend the edamame which I couldn't finish, there was so much! Orion beer on tap was a perfect crisp accompaniment to the ramen.
Ramen here is SO good and not expensive! Nice layout, friendly staff and good variety of other tasty things on the menu if you're not dead set on ramen. Thumbs up.
I'm a big fan of Japanese ramen, amd I'm alwayas on the hunt for a good, hearty bowl of noodles with a killer broth. Dojo Ramen Bar is a credible alternative; you will notice that it's quite busy. The seating is a little cramped. Decent prices for portion, and quality. Winner was finishing off with the black sesame icecream. Staff extremely friendly, and make this casual eat enjoyable.
Nothing compares to ramen in Japan but you know what? This place isn't too far off. It's not the best but it isn't bad. It definitely hits the ramen cravings though. The JFC is so delicious I wish the serving was much bigger. The sesame mazesoba is a standout for me. Staff are super friendly which is always a plus!
Whilst I don't believe this is the place to find the most authentic ramen, it is definitely one of my favourites. I love this place. The wait staff are all bubbly, happy and a joy to deal with. I'm obsessed with their TanTanMen and they have Orion (possibly the best beer on the planet from Okinawa, Japan) on tap! That and a TanTanMen is a perfect 'pick me up'. I eat ramen around Melbourne 2-3 times a week and I always come here one of those times and swap the others around. It annoys me that Dojo is never listed amongst the other ramen places in Melbourne. I honestly think it's one of the most crowd please ramen joints around. I also wish they did lunchtimes due to its location and closeness to home. But you can't have it all. 😉
Good service, tasty ramen (had the spicy) delicious JFC and warm sake, what else do you want on a freezing evening in Melbourne? No doubt, I'll be back for more.
My favourite Japanese restaurant in Melbourne! An authentic Japanese food experience with friendly customer service and a nice atmosphere.
Would definitely recommend.
We ordered Tan Tan Men ramen and 2 kinds of Japanese fried chicken.
Out of the 2 chickens we preferred plain JFC, nice and crunchy. For me however Tan Tan Men ramen was the star, very morish
A necessary maiden trip into the area of Northcote saw me looking for a quick bite, and what better for a quick bite than a steaming bowl of ramen? I was craving for it and lunch was well overdue, so I was lucky that there was one ramen joint in the whole area--Dojo.
I walked into a nice space, which had a generous eating area and blended the feel of a modern restaurant with classic ramen bar quite well. The ramen here is very much the Tokyo style, the broth is the product of experimentation with a variety of ingredients until that sweet spot is reached, and a special signature broth is born. It would be foolhardy to believe that the pork and chicken based broths made famous by various internationally enterprising franchises, and even some exclusive to Japan, are the only "authentic" styles of ramen. The making of ramen is an old art and every place you go will have a different style.
I ordered the chili miso ramen, which came with egg, bamboo shoots, chashu and nori seaweed. The broth was great, not a deep flavour that you might get from pork stock, but lighter with a good balance of flavour and a little bit of complexity if you look for it. It really reminded me of the flavours served up in those little independent ramen shops on the streets of Tokyo. The hint of chili was just perfect too. The noodles themselves were also nice, although I can't remember for sure whether they were handmade. Regardless, the texture was decent but I've had better.
We could definitely use places like this out in the ramen desert that is the south eastern suburbs. Those who are more local should support Dojo--they care about bringing the delicious ramen shop flavours of Tokyo to Melbourne.
DOJO RAMEN
Ramen is the best thing to have during winter time alternatively to soup. We went to DOJO ramen bar in Northcote on a quiet Tuesday night. This place is a hit and miss but some dishes were our favorite so we will return. Dojo ramen bar is very easy to find, it’s located in Northcote Main Street. The restaurant has a great ambiance and modern space. Seating is inside or beer garden, and great for catch up and quick meal. The interior has an industrial feel together with Samurai wallpaper (Ginza). There were high stools and big tables for sharing as well as seating at the bar.
The staffs were attentive and friendly. They greeted us right away and seated us on the big table to share with other guests, which we didn’t mind. All the staff were Japanese and spoke good English. The menus and water were brought to us promptly. Extensive selection of Japanese whiskey and beers. Nice menu selection with gluten free and vegan options. The menu is more fusion than authentic, nevertheless it is comfy food for Aussies. Many times we have visited this place and were regulars there. The sake and drinks we ordered came out fast. The service is speedy as always.
The place filled up quickly as we set down. We usually start off with Edamame, JFC chicken with mayo and ramen after. This time we tried Pan Fried Squid with Butter and Tamari soy. The squid wasn't to my liking and way too salty. Then followed by JFC Japanese Fried Chicken, the Dojo’s secret recipe karate fried chicken with miso mayo dipping sauce. This time it wasn’t great like last time, the chicken was dry and bland. We were pleased with the five pan-fried pork Gyoza with vinegar, sesame and soy sauce. The pork gyoza speaks for itself with juiciness and a great taste. We finished with a bowl each of Tan Tan Men, Dojo’s karate spicy ramen served with sesame paste chili bean tare, topped with spicy minced pork, agitate egg, spring onion and bok choy. The ramen broth was full of flavors and not too spicy. The noodles in the ramen were soft and cooked perfectly. Overall it always has been my favorite dish of all time. We didn’t have room to try the desserts but maybe next time.
Definitely we will come back even though we live in North Melbourne. It is such a great place to have a meal and drinks. I recommend visiting this place to have a selection of their ramen and other dishes.
gooooooooooooooood japanese food plus lovely staff and vibe. edamame is sooooooo goooooooooood. yummmm yummmm. just wish it was closer to my house!
My favorite ramen in Melbourne so far! Noodles are nice and chewy and the broth is always 👌🏽the chili ramen and the tan tan men ramen are not too spicy so don't be afraid! I would go here just for the Japanese Fried Chicken alone.
Nice place, very Izakaya styled. We had the JFC/kara-age with ponzu and pork gyoza's for starters then went on to Shio and Shoyu ramen afterwards (quite the Tokyo style).
But I think you guys need a better variety of ramen (no Tonkotsu nor miso ramen?).
Anyways was a good experience, will come again.
Made a last min booking here.
Food was very good and tasty.
Loved the high tables and chairs.
I think the waitress forgot our order as it took a while for the dishes to come out and other people getting their dishes even though they arrived after us
Would go back - food was good and tasty
I had the tam tam man
Overall it was a great experience..dined in and sat in the back outside...great ambiance..friendly staff..and speedy service. The edamame was made differently..it was fried with some chili and garlic--it was really delicious minus the oil. The egg in both the Ramen was cooked to perfection--the chilli miso ramen was really yummy however there was abit too much fat in the meat for my liking. Unfortunately the shoyu ramen was abit plain. The price was fair and the food came relatively quickly. All in all I will definitely reccomend the spicy miso ramen and the edamame for anyone whos considering checking the place out.
Super. Food is great. Service also fast which is a plus point for us, family with 2 babies. Authentic Japanese. It's not only ramen. They have good selections of food and desserts. Just recommend this place to a friend once we step out of the place

When you’re craving ramen, there is nothing for it but to drop everything and overload on Japanese food. We visited The Dojo Ramen Bar in Northcote for our fill of this delicious Japanese comfort food. The Dojo has a great feel about it. The space is casual and welcoming, cool but accessible. It aims to emulate the feel of Tokyo ramen bars while fitting the Melbourne scene.
Absolutely one of the best ramen places in Melbourne. Should be way higher than 3.6 stars. I had a okonmiyaki stick which was crispy on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. The bowl of shoyu ramen that followed was even better though. They are generous with the ingredients as for 13.5 you get a big bowl of ramen with cha shu pork, marinated soft yolk egg, bamboo shoot, seaweed and shallots. You can add extras if you like. The service is very good too, the host that greeted me made sure I was comfortable and sat me at a table in front of the aircon as it was pretty hot outside and he saw me sweating. Will come back here time and time again.

Great Japanese at a good price. We tried 4 entrees listed from great to good: fried chicken, edemame, gyoza and cheese spring rolls. I ate the tan tan man ramen which was delightful and the rest of the mains were good although the salad ramen were not a huge hit. The only thing I did not like was the chairs. Stools are NOT comfortable. I feel like I need to go to a chiropractor to have my back adjusted.
I've eaten at a lot of Japanese restaurants and Ramen bars. This is one of the best Tokyo Ramen places in Melbourne! The Ten Ten Men is to die for, the perfect amount of spice and pork. The service was phenomenal, with polite and humble staff reminiscent of Tokyo. This is definitely a place you need to eat at if you love Japanese food and culture.
Northcote is strangely lacking in good Japanese restaurants. I've been to all of them, except KoiKoi, and of those this one is easily the best.
(YoYo Noodles have a few Japanese dishes, but is mostly non-Japanese, so I'm not classing them as a Japanese restaurant)
First time here, love the presence it has. Layout and everthing were great.
It really has a great Japanese flair to it.
Got the shio ramen, and my partner got the shoyu mazesoba
Shio ramen had a great soup base, however noodles were off the mark slightly, meat was probably the elephant in the bowl as it didnt quite meet the same level as everything else.
Soup was the biggest plus for me, one of the better shio soups in Melbourne
Mazesoba isnt my cup of tea but the flavour didnt seem to be too bad.
If i come back, will definitely try the shoyu ramen.
Great place! Had the Tan Tan Men Ramen was so yummy, not overly spicy, but just right! Place has a great vibe and staff are also friendly!!
Amazing food, friendly staff and cosy atmosphere on a wintery night. Food was quick, tasty and reasonably priced. Staff even willingly offered to split the bill. Will definitely be back!
Dined here last night. Friendly service. The restaurant itself is really funky. Centrally located on high street Northcote. Huge serving of ramen. Not the best ramen I've ever had but certainly tasty all the same. Great sake cocktails. Would like to return to try some of the different entrees
Very solid authentic ramen. I'm a big fan of this place. Shoyu is my favourite.
Irritating that there is a minimum character count for these reviews.
A really pleasant little ramen bar, the serves were big and tasty, and they have a well stocked bar. Definitely give the JFC (fried chicken) a go, and their Ramen is spot on!
Delicious ramen, great way to warm up during the winter months! Great beer and atmosphere. Staff were very attentive and accommodating, particularly when a customer with a disability came in. Good prices and I can't wait to be back.

Wifey Bear has never been a big fan of ramen noodles, so how did she fare after being convinced to go to The Dojo Ramen Bar? Would you believe... there was something on the menu (nope, not the noodles!) that was like Bear Cryptonite? Stunning us into taste-bud heaven? Click the ↓↓ link below ↓↓ to find out what it was!
Great northcote ramen joint. The ponzu fried chicken is awesome. Crispy and juicy. The ramen itself is nice - good texture on the noodles and decent quality broths. There are better ramens in Melbourne, but this is one of the best in the burbs and is certainly high quality. Atmosphere and decor of Dojo is also warm and inviting. Would highly recommend for a beer and a meal.
Was feeling like something soupy and warm on a cold Sunday arvo and decided to check this place out.
On first entering this place is super cool and hip! There's small details in the decor that are really neat like the manga books lying around.
Anyway we ordered the Japanese fried chicken ($9) and a ramen each. J got the shoyu ramen, pretty much the most common one ($13.5) and I got the vegetarian shoya just to try it ($13.0). We probably didn't even have to wait 5 minutes for the fried chicken to arrive. It looks a bit like popcorn chicken and came with a spicy mayo sauce. Together with the sauce- this dish is a KILLER. The chicken although fried was delicious and juicy! It was a little bit small for the cost though.
The ramen was delicious too- the soup base is pretty thin not a thick one and we were very impressed at the delicious noodles- not too soft still retaining its texture. Maybe not be best ramen I've had but still delicious !
We were absolutely full by the end of the meal but will definitely be back to try more awesome things!! What a gem! Thanks guys :)
Great food, both take away and eat in. Have been a few times and whilst the shoyu ramen is my go to dish, the rest of the menu is always delicious. Can be quite busy, but service is quick so turn over can be quick too. Definitely worth a visit!
More than your average hipster hang out. The food was all good. Fried chicken was not a healthy choice but was delicious. More importantly the Ramen was brilliant.
As good as the Chilli Miso Ramen was, it was overshadowed by the Shoyu Ramen ($13.5). The broth in this ramen was absolutely delicious, the dark soy underscored by a rich, umami base of pork stock. Unfortunately, these wonderfully thick, bicarbonate-heavy noodles were cooked just a minute or two past al dente. This was an awful shame, as it was the only thing preventing this from being more or less a perfect bowl of ramen.
Very nice place, have dined here several times with various friends. Both the dry and regular ramen are pretty good. Very nice entrées, in particular the JFC and the Okonomiyaki sticks (both of which I enjoy far too much for my own good).
Cute atmosphere to the place as well, although I've yet to see the street fighter arcade cabinet actually switched on, maybe I just come in at the wrong times.
Popped in here for a quick bite before a gig. It was a warm night so we got a table out the front on High Street. We ordered a bowl of ramen each, the shoyu and chilli miso. Both were lovely, the soft boiled egg was perfectly done. I only wish we had more time (and bigger stomachs) so we could have tried some of the other things on offer.
Yum! My partner and I are regulars here. The ramen is delicious, but we rarely get passed the snacks. Edamame, pickles, JFC and gyoza are all must haves. Green tea cheesecake with black seasame icecream is a wonderfully decadent end to the meal.
Lovely staff too.
Having waited to go to Dojo Ramen for a while, my wife and I got our opportunity the other night and it didn't disappoint. We called ahead to notify the restaurant that we would be bringing in a pram or car capsule with us, as we were with child, and they were terrific in catering for us.
For entree we had the Wafu Steak and Salmon Skewers. It was hard to pick the winner between the two dishes, however both were extremely good. I particularly liked the seasoning of the Wafu Steak.
For mains I had the Shoyu and Beth had the Veggie Miso. The broth of Beth's Miso was wonderful, whilst I loved everything about the Shoyu. Particularly that egg which tasted delicious.
Our enjoyment appeared to wake up the baby and Beth and I took turns to feed her whilst having our meals.
A very enjoyable night.
I had the cheesy rolls and the Shio ramen.
The cheesy rolls came with a miso mayonnaise, and together were incredible.
When it comes to ramens, I strongly prefer a tonkotsu based soup. Unfortunately Dojo did not have a tonkotsu option. As such the broth was too light for my liking. They do however give a generous serving of pork, and a perfectly soft boiled egg.
Tried this recommendation froma friend and it did not disappoint! The entres are fantastic (their fried chicken dish is a must try!) Very juicy. Ordered the Shiou Ramen soup which was quite tasty although probably a bit on the salty side for me. My husband ordeed the chilli ramen but it wasnt spicy enough. Atmosphere was great and they were very acommodating to my 1 year old. Will definitely be back here
Ordered fried chicken, shio ramen and chilli ramen. Fried chicken tasted very clean and juicy. Shio ramen was delicious and the serving size was good. Chilli ramen was okay, if you like that chilli soy bean paste taste. Would definitely come back again
Came here as it was the closest ramen joint from our place and it did totally gave us our ramen fixed.. Just on high st, a trendy lil restaurant with plenty of parking nearby.
They dont do bookings for under 4ppl but when we got there at 8pm on a Sunday it was busy but there were still plenty of tables. Lovely japanese decor with an anime sorta majig theme?
Service - girls were lovely. Little bit too busy so we felt kind of rushed.
Entree - ordered the vegetable tempura and Japanese pancakes. Cant go wrong i say! They were delicious. Servings are really small though.. Had about 5-6pieces in the tempura and one stick of the pancake.
Main - shoyu ramen... Mmmm... Not the best ive had since weve been to japan and you cant top that but it was definitely not bad. Got heaps of meat and bamboo shoots. Added bok vhoy as extra but hardly noticed it as they chopped it up in mini pieced which i would have preferred whole.. Broth was good but i still had to add a bit of soy sauce to intensify the flavour.
Overall good experience. Didnt have photos of the ramen as was too busy eating it oops!!
Faultless. Dojo Ramen is my favourite spot in Melbourne to get my ramen fix. Always a great atmosphere, great value for money and you walk out feeling full. Pictured is the Tan Tan Men. Broth was sensational, and complimented the ingredients perfectly. I loved the sesame seed touch on top, really added that nutty flavour at the end to compliment the pork and vegetables. Do yourself a favour and head to Northcote for ramen. You won't go wrong!
Wish I had a photo but the lighting was awful!! My bf and I had ramen. B had the hot ramen with pork and seaweed (think it was the soya sauce one) and I had the cold (summer option) ramen with sesame seeds. It was really refreshing!! Nice and cold, different from the usual and it was just stocked with heaps of flavour. Although they out did it with the ginger. Just too much. B's ramen was hot and flavorful and the stock wasn't salty (it was just right). Good thing about this place is there's no msg and all ingredients are from Japan. Jfc was the bomb and went well with the mayo and we had the wafu steak. Cooked with perfection (medium rare). We had the green tea pudding and enjoyed it as it wasn't so sweet. It was my 2nd time there and I can say that I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. My bf said it was one of the best ramens his ever had. We will definetly be returning!
Great vibe in this casual dining place. Loved the wagyu steak and the edamame - and our cold soba noodle dishes were delicious and plentiful. SErvice friendly and helful. I think it's good value for money for Japanese food - recommended!
Fantastic place with delicious food and plenty of options too. Staff are super friendly and the decor of the place is very Japanese.
Very reasonable pricing and overall a lovely experience with my partner.
Venue probably doesn't suit larger groups of 6+
Cozy and delicious Ramen Restaurant.
This place has the quickest service that I’ve ever seen! Order and pay through QR code and the staff is very kind and friendly, except when it’s 9pm on a Saturday, rushing for closing haha
Even though, it’s worth to go and have a try!
Gyoza super soft and delicious.
Start of the night: black sesame ice cream. Must try!!
A really pleasant experience. The pork ramen, chicken and dumplings were fantastic, so was the service. The only downside here was the vegetarian miso ramen, the broth was too thick which was a major let down.
Would I return? Yes.
Pork Gyoza - Delicious little pockets of flavour. Standard, good quality gyoza that you’d expect from a place like this.
Chilli Miso Ramen - I was worried this would be too spicy but after speaking to the really helpful staff, they reassured me it wasn’t bad at all and they were right. It was a very subtle hint of spice which for my sensitive tastebuds was perfect. Flavourful broth, pork was nice and tender and there was a sufficient amount of it. Overall a great bowl of ramen and I’d have it again!
Staff are very knowledgeable and accommodating to any dietary needs you have. A solid spot for ramen in the area.

A relatively good ramen place in Northern suburbs. Chilli miso and tantan were delicious. Shoyu was just ok. The vegan ramens were also good. JFC is a must to order.
A Full house of eaters in this popular Ramen 🍜 Restaurant.
Treat yourself with a hot Ramen 🍜 & a warm Sake 🍶, this is the perfect place for a cold winter ❄️ night & gathering with friends.
I like the Entries/snacks taste more than the acut main dishes. Otherwise really nice place to dine in.
Ate here last night as a solo dinner and really enjoyed my bowl of ramen, the stock had a delicate clean but complex flavour, the noodles etc. were nice with the egg having a nice salty umami kick. It came with a couple of slices of char siu pork which were a little chewie but nice. I accompanied it with a glass of Asahi dark which they have on tap there, it is quite a light bodied "dark" beer and I felt it cleanses the pallet well. The staff were also nice. I recommend checking them out if you enjt a good bowl of ramen.
