Review Pj's Mexican Kitchen - Northcote

Andrew Ford
Brilliant place for a feed or just a drink. The owner is a top bloke and we went for a few beers and tequila during a guys night out and they were really hospitable considering they were about to close.
Akash Devasar
Nice joint that feels really homely. A small serve of corn chips and salsa is given to every table which is a nice starter. The food was tasty and portions were good. However, specifically requested that no beef be served and yet it was. Hopefully such errors don’t occur in the future.

The place has a comfy, great vibe. The staff are polite and warm. Margaritas are decent. Unfortunately the food is bland, what a let down :(
Jennifer Robins
I love the food here. Also love the strawberry margaritas. I have been here many times, and will definitely be going back.

Excellent menu having several vegetarian and gluten free options, thus suiting the needs of all; superb service, extremely friendly staff; even the drinks had a unique Mexican touch of its own. Soft Tacos have always been my most fave. We were in a rush, should have tried the deserts or the sides, a must go...

Melbourne has only so many really great Mexican restaurants. PJs sits at the top. Winks and PJs are always a top tip

Food has good mexican flavours although the rice has a texture that it hasn't been fully cooked. Unsure if that is how Mexican rice should be. The strawberry mojita slushie wasnt as good, tropical and mango falvour was way better. Atmosphere is great with Mexican songs and they have more seatings at the back Staff were really nice. They brought out the desserts we ordered with candles and sung bday song for us. Customer service is great. Street parking is available after 5 or 6pm but otherwise it is usually 2 hrly parking.

The service was beyond poor. Staff were so rude and made us feel very uncomfortable. We went for a few Friday night Margeritas which were nice. However, I would never return based on how we were made to feel and the toxic energy of the staff.

Good food! ordered the burrito, would say quality is a 3.5 / 5 (I am very picky so that is good for me) What set me over the edge to a 4 star rating is their fish bowls! Strong (but not too strong) and at a really great price!!
Ann T
Overpriced meals and drinks. Portion sizes of salsa too little. A positive would be the atmosphere and music that’s about it. Would not be returning. I got food poisoning from here.

Food was terribly over priced and an insult, smallest portions in the world, and microwaved, a teaspoon of filling in the chicken burrito the rest was just tortilla

Would not recommend at all, felt very ripped off

Have visited a few tones and also ordered take away and every time has been amazing!

Good quality food

Great service

Would recommend and will visit again

PJ's Mexican kitchen is my favourite restaurant of all time. It has splendid meals that no other restaurants can beat. It's food tastes like it should be worth $1 million dollars, even though it is so cheap. I highly recommend going there.
Luke Philips
Pico de gallo more like pico de wrong restaurant. $21 for a tiny burrito. Beer was cold, tres dips was good. Classic refried beans job. Two sombreros.
Madison
Tiny portion sizes, poor service and tasteless food. If you want to be ignored for most of the night and pay $20 for a burrito the size of a very small enchilada, this is your place.
Mark Dunlop
We ordered through UberEats so I can't comment on the atmosphere but this was the worst meal I have had in a long time. $70 for a lazily made, small proportioned and visually unappealing meal. My fellow diners described the meal as an 'insult' and an 'embarrassment' - both statements are more generous than the burrito fillings
Nalia
Ordered the potachios supremos, fish taco and beef taco. My favourite part was the sauce on the fish taco - very tasty. The beef taco was a little bland, and wouldn't have minded more salsa on the wedges although the guacamole was fresh and I liked the chunks of avocado. Overall, the food was ok without necessarily being memorable.

We decided to try PJ's as we pass it often! The sangria fantastic as it was, should be consumed with food, 2 bottles later and we could speak fluent Spanish, loved it. We ordered Nachos plentiful dish and great as a starter. Mains we ordered the sharing sizzling plate $23, which came with 4 soft tortillas. The meat serving could have been a little more generous, however the flavours were spot on! Another must try is the frozen drinks they pack a punch! Deb was fantastic, great service by the whole team, thanks for the free shot of tequila... We will be back soon!

My Wife and I have been eating at this restaurant for the past four months. we have eaten at other Mexican restaurants around Australia and we highly recommend to everyone that they eat here. The staff are great and the food is fabulous.
Come and have a great time with great people and great food.
The fact you can book is a huge tick. Food is SPOT ON everything was fresh and tasty. However, you may as well serve yourself.....service is non existent.

Beef Corolado was awful. Maybe over microwaved? Smelled awful, tasted awful... too salty. I would not feed this to my dog. I will never go back.

Much like a Taco Bills. Nothing special about the food or service. I personally like something a bit more gourmet. My partner was happy though.
Alannah
I love their dishes. Whenever I go there, I think it's very comforting, enjoyable and their food is great. Also, their mini amigos (kids meal wih soft drink, chips if your having a taco, and dessert) is really nice and cheap.
Mia
Extremely friendly staff, cheap prices, and nice setting. Great for family's. Food is pretty average nothing wrong with it just could be better. But overall I'd recommend going there.🌯🌮

The food here is great, like a better version of your taco bill favourites! Shared the fajitas which were delicious and very generous servings of sour cream and sides (apart from the cheese which we got through very quickly). Frozen margaritas are a big favourite of mine so always have to get one, although they don't seem to be very alcoholic 🤔

Over priced for quality. There are better Mexican restaurants that offer better value for money. The atmosphere is enjoyable, staff are good.
Aks
It is a cozy little mexican restaurant with fresh and tasty food.. we ordered sangria to start off with which was ok... the food was good, though nothing to complain but nothing special too.. more enjoyable for people who live nearby..

Great restaurant with friendly staff! Been here 3 times and it's a delicious local gem. The only menu item I wouldn't recommend are the enchiladas. They are just full of cheese and make you feel sick during the meal. Tacos and burritos are amazing as are the smaller menu items. But definitely would not be ordering the enchiladas ever again. Other than that, we had the sticky date for dessert - great portion size to share!

Our go to place for local Latino food. Food is authentic and always fresh. Went here with our family of 9 (including a 2 year old) and staff happily catered to dietary requirements and what nots, even though we'd booked the wrong night. Everything was brought promptly - colouring sheets and crayons included, not just food! Had the Chicken Fajita that came with plenty of sides. Jalapeños were a highlight - fresh, crunchy and delicious.

Great selection of beers, friendly staff. Pretty sure the jalapeño popper type entre was from Costco but it was cheap, so whatever. I had the beef loco enchilada, large serving but for me i felt it was a bit on the bland side and was just mush. The taco side was really nice but had I paid $17 for three I'd probably be disappointed. It's also a bit on the high side price wise for what is meant to be basic homely food. Maybe ordered the wrong thing so I'll let it go through to the keeper.

previously food was very good , but saturday night is was shocking, not joking burrito had 2 tiny pieces of chicken in it, the large nachos was soooooo small that we all started laughing when it came out, fajita salad was a sad joke,,,,, has it changed hands?? sorry P J but you have a major problem at this location , i went home and had toast, enough said

I've always had a love affair with Mexico, their culture, their history, their architecture, but mostly their food.

There is so much more to Mexican food than tacos and salsa, but unfortunately most Mexican restaurants focus on these two staples. Now don't get me wrong, I love a good taco just like the next guy, but rarely do I find a taco that wows, and rarely do I find a Mexican restaurant in Melbourne that wows me as well.

I rate Mexican restaurants by BAD - GOOD - GREAT. Most fall in the range bad, with a few good and I've only rated two as great.

PJ's Mexican Kitchen falls into the GOOD category. The fit out is pretty good, and is what you would expect from a Mexican Restaurant, rustic and colourful.

The menu is not bad, but is what you would expect. We ordered for entree the trio platter, A selection of homemade dips: Chili con carne, guacamole and frijoles con queso served with corn chips. The Chili con carne was pretty good, and full of flavour. The frijoles con queso was ok but nothing special. The guacamole was a disappointment. It virtually had no flavour, it was basically just smashed avocado.

Next we ordered the Mexican charred corn, served with chipotle aioli and lime. This should have been a great dish, but I think the kitchen forgot to add the chipotle aioli and lime. It literally was just grilled corn and was rather dry.

For our main I ordered the Beef Colorado, Tender pieces of slow cooked beef with ground spices and onion, served with frijoles, Mexican rice and two flour tortillas. This was a good solid dish. Full of flavour and is what I would expect from a Mexican restaurant.

Look, overall it was a good experience with a couple of misses. The service, whilst friendly and quick, just needed a bit of polishing.

If in the area again I'd certainly return, and was certainly value for money.

Cool place
amazing Mexican the best around
service shocking, manager rude
we only go back because the food is so good
Everyone we take comments on the food and also leaves disappointed with the staff/service
we were pleased that the older guy was back
he is onto the service but he has been missing for months
so fingers crossed he stays!
Daniel
Okay, let me catch my breath... I rushed all the way over here to tell you...YUM!
Definitely one of the best Mexican experiences I've ever had. Usually I regret eating Mexican because, let's face it, when it's made by people who aren't Mexican or don't understand the nuances of Mexican food you're basically just eating a faux-Chicano abomination. PJ's is definitely a place I'll be coming back to. Also, a great selection of Mexican beers on offer. I didn't know that Corona made a light beer; I didn't drink it, but it was a learning experience as well as a dining experience.
Matthew Rock
Nice place although the staff seem to lack communication about dishes and wanting to explain ingredients. Food was good and very filling. Would recommend if you felt like Mexican food.
Tania Soccio
My new favourite place to eat Mexican!! So good!
The food was delicious.. Service great and the Sangria was spot on! Will definitely be back!
Dannyharb69
This place is a must try. Amazing food which is out in a flash and exceptional service. The fajitas have to be the best but then try the burritos and tacos... simply wow!!
Melissa
I had the fajitas and the chicken was cooked to perfection, the flavours were amazing! Will def be eating here again.
Frozen margarita was also nice without being too strong.
Happy Traveller
Came here a few months ago for tacos and a frozen margarita. I've been back another four times since and ordered exactly the same thing. Love those tacos!
Two Sheds
Just ok. It's a tad cramped and noisy inside. The food is just there acknowledging that Melbourne doesn't do Mexican food that well. Service reasonable. Needs to lift its game substantially.
Snoozie
Meh is all I have to say. Not even worth talking about really. One main, a salad and two drinks almost $60 .
No consistent from wait staff at all

This place is the bomb! Where do I start. If you're hungry and want some good Mexican, start with the tacos then move onto something bigger. The mixed fajitas are always good but I also recommend either the Loco Enchilada Mexico or the beef Colorado. They have a great selection of Mexican beers and HEAPS of tequila if you fancy a shot. Margaritas are always delish too. We keep coming back here, there's a reason why......

PJ's is our go to Mexican place every month. We try get in at least once a month. The Dos Enchilada or the chicken fajita are amazing!!! They also have a great selection of craft beers to try. Try their Taco beer by 2 birds brewing, goes perfect with your mexican

*Restaurant: Offers both indoor & outdoor seating.
*Service: Table service
*Restroom: Needs attention.
*Food: Ordered 2 dishes.
Chicken quesadilla supremo & beef burrito: Both lacks flavour. Wasn't appealing to the eye. Both were just below average.
*Verdict: Not worth trying.
Matt Dowling
Popped into PJ's last night, been here before and never lets me down. Had some tacos to start, smashed 2 of those and moved onto the Dos Enchilada....Man. Soooo good. I love their range of Mexican beers too. The best thing about coming here is you walk out full but not too full like you do sometimes with other Mexican restaurants. Love this place!
Moon_bop
I can only speak for the dish that I tried which was the nachos frijoles; I found it disappointing. Supermarket corn chips really let it down as usually at a Mexican restaurant they have their own home made corn chips, it's the best part! and at $22 it is fairly expensive for the small serve, did not seem like a large. However I loved the taco beer and the creme caramel was just divine. Staff were very friendly.
Lucy
We had a really great experience at PJ's. The food was yum, the lemon margaritas are great, and the service is exceptional. Will definitely go back!
Amir
Came here with a group of friends after being recommended by a family member who came here. Best Mexican food I have eaten in while! Love all the drinks will definitely return! Thank you! 🙏

So much better than taco bell!!. Visited Friday night for the first time, will definitely come back again, love the ambience, great service and lovely people, food was excellent and very affordable.

Stumbled across this place one night and have been regulars ever since! Amazing food and service!
Ash Linnegar
The nachos here are the BEST nachos I've had in my life!!
Brendan Harty
Had dinner last night and loved the beautiful food. The nachos supreme was so tasty with really fresh ingredients ( I would recommend it). The beef quesadilla was also amazing in flavour. The atmosphere is really relaxed and you feel you are in Mexico!
Carla Koala
Unfortunately everything we'd ordered had obviously been cooked in the microwave then topped with salad after. Fish taco was he worst of my life. Terrible "mayo" sauce. Service was untrained and painful.
Kyliebuchanan
Disappointing. Food lacked flavour, guacamole was essentially mashed avocado - no lime, no coriander, in no way Mexican. Salsa lacking - looked like something out of the jar. Saving grace for me - the sangria - served in mason jar with a straw. Hoping food will improve.
Maxi
Enjoyed a really good meal here last week. Dishes were prepared with fresh ingredients and packed full of flavour. Salads were really tasty as was the charred corn. Great tacos and the chicken quesadilla suprema was excellent. Nice selection of Mexican beers available. Friendly service.
