We have been coming to Sweet Salt for the last 18 months and have to say that the food here is absolutely amazing. The food even though is Gluten Free, it is so much more flavoursome than other cheaper takeaway shops. I’m not coeliac but my partner is so I have tried various gluten and gluten free foods and I much prefer the items on the menu from Sweet Salt. We recommend the dim sims and potato cakes.

Such a relief to find fish & chips that are safe for coeliacs! Some of the best chips I've ever tasted, and the gf dimsims are delicious too. Friendly and fast service everytime. I would highly recommend heading here if you have coeliacs or a gluten intollerance!
Very filling lunch! Of course that could be because we accidentally ordered four meals instead of three. Oops!
The crispy chicken burger was huge. Two nice thick pieces of juicy chicken with a really nice marinade.
The crumbed calamari wasn’t as nice as the deep fried gluten free ones - that’s just a personal taste thing.
The gluten free potato cakes were delicious.
The gluten free banana fritter was really nice but it really needed to be served with a small scoop of ice cream.
I didn’t notice any ‘table water’ which would have been really nice. Overall the food was hot and good, having so many Gluten Free options was amazing and the prices were pretty good too.
Will be back!
Great tasty food and love that everything is GF and that they take it seriously. I know some complain about the price but I don’t mind as the servings are good sizes
Sweet Salt serves by far the best gluten-free burgers and fish & chips for miles around! Not to mention, they’re Coeliac association accredited, giving me a wonderful peace of mind when eating here. (Y’know, being a coeliac and all.)
I wouldn’t recommend passing on those deep fried Soft-Shell Crab and Barramundi burgers, nor those amazingly crunchy and fresh fish & chips!
Heck, don’t go past this place, period!
Further, the staff are often really accommodating and nice. I’m delighted to dine here every time! My only regret is not thinking of posting this review sooner.

Gluten and dairy free Fish and Chips joint.
Ambience: The place is pretty retro and modern. It's pretty warm and the smell and feel of oil wasn't apparent.
Service: The staffs serving us was really friendly, came to redeem a free meal from eatclub (use my code C6AF1) and were told that we can only redeem two, which was what we did, and it was redeemed without a fuss. The food came out after a reasonable wait, though our grilled salmon took a while.
Food: The battered whiting and blue grenadier fillets were pretty good, with the blue grenadier fishier among the two. The batter, since it's gluten free, were crispier than usual but in a good way and they werent too oily. Chips were meaty and crunchy as well, and salad was nice and refreshing. We enjoyed the salmon steak the most though, it was really fragrant and just the right doneness. Both the tartar sauce and garlic aoli were enjoyable.
Price: reasonable prices for the portion and quality.

Good burger.. decent amount of flavour in the patty, the brioche bun was delicious (especially around the edge where it was nice and crispy), super squooshy and buttery like a brioche bun should be. Caramelised onions were a nice sweet addition, and the pickles were the perfect accompaniment.
I always feel that 2 patties ruins the balance of a burger, and my boyfriend definitely felt like it was too much. Get a mr cheesy and build up from there.
Nice service in there too, and if you’re not silly you’ll get the lunch specials for $9.95 - today there was a crab burger included on the specials board
just cannot believe i have finally gone to a place that makes gluten free fish n chips!!! never had fish n chips in my life or nuggets or anything! i love this place so much, everyone is so friendly and food comes out super quickly! being a coeliac is hard when you can’t eat all these nice things, but sweet salt has changed my life 😍😍😍

I popped in here tonight with my two hungry boys. The service was friendly and helpful. I had the hot chick burger which had a bit of spice attached and tasted great. My boys had the sleazy cheesy and nugget + chips.

Great service with a lovely range of fish and packs. Even serving a range of burgers. Most the items can be made gluten free which is a great find for those with coeliac disease! Great dinner and the bff pack serving was very generous. Would definitely come back

I love this place! They always do great fish and chips, the portions are fantastic and the staff are lovely! Only thing is that it’s cold inside, however you don’t get that oily smell either!!

I had grilled Barramundi which was really nice. The coconut rice was amazzzzing!!! So yummy! Bit expensive in my opinion but portions were really generous, staff was friendly, atmosphere was nice and food was good!
When I made my way to Black Ruby Bakeries in Thornbury, earlier this year. I decided to stop by another well-known gluten free eatery that just so happens to be on the same tram line. Sweet Salt in Northcote can also be reached on the 96 tram and serves up delicious gluten free fish and chips with a strong knowledge of cross contamination. When I spoke with them via Facebook the owner let me know that they pride themselves on their care and that to always mention you have Coeliac Disease when ordering.
Can definetly say that this place will satisfy my fish & chips cravings! They are verry generous with the chips. Potato cakes were the best potato cake I've ever had. They didn't have a load of batter on it and didn't taste like it was sitting in a freezer. Fish was cooked to perfection. I prefer grilled fish and I absolutely loved their blue grenadier fish. I have to come back to check out their burgers next!

Fish, chips, salads were very tasty and fresh. I found everything very satisfying and tasty. Food was not oily and greasy at all. Fit out of the eatery is cool and funky. My only observation was the owner who had a bit of a chip on his shoulder.
This place is amazing, best fish and chips I've had in Melbourne. We ordered gluten free battered fish and chips, and it was fresh, crispy outside and didnt leave you feeling 'yuck'..................highly recommend, this is going on my 'order every Friday' list.
I reckon I eat a burger from this joint once a fortnight. The reasons are simple: fantastic & fast service and the burgers are delicious and moist. Every so often they throw out a curve ball with a weird coloured burger, but I guess that's a trend. I suppose if they reached a bit higher with their flavours this place could really sparkle but for a fish and chip and burger joint well situated for a quick feed before a night out, this place hits the spot in all the ways it needs to

Got takeaway tonight from Sweet Salt and the fish and chips were awesome. You can see from the photo I added of the receipt it says "1 celiac" which is awesome considering it shows they take a lot of care in their customers. The batter was crispy but not too hard, also the dimsims were incredible! The onion rings are awesome except one of mine was completely empty and that was disappointing. Otherwise, it was great food.
Some of the best fish and chips I've had in a long time. If your into burgers the sleazy cheesy is hands down best burger I have had in quite a while.

I don't know how they do it, but the battered fish is served crunchy and stays crunchy til you've finished your meal, none of this rubbery bouncy battered fish that you're used to, This IS fabulous.

Outstanding! Jamil and the Sweet Salt team provided our family with the perfect fish and chip experience. Using the cleanest of oil, our whiting, calamari , prawns, potato cakes and chips (especially the chips1) were the best we've had for years. We'll definitely be back! Thanks
Couldn't wait to try the gluten free fish and chip shop. Finally. I tried the special opening pack of whiting chips and salad. The batter was crispy and tasty. The portion size was perfect for a small trial pack. Will be back.
Heard good things about the Burgers here so thought we'd give it a try. Wasn't disappointed, old school type burger but on a Brioche Bun. Also ordered a flake which was quite thick but full of flavour. The guys then shouted us a Mars Bar in batter and a pineapple fritter which was very nice of them.Will go back
Got a gluten free blue grenadier and side salad, the batter was surprisingly good, thin and crispy. The fish was fresh and moist. Side salad was awesome too! Will be back for sure!

The food here is excellent quality - fresh fish, and well cooked. But jeez, the fish portions are tiny. See attached photo of barramundi and flathead. It literally took me less than 10 seconds to eat the flathead, and I'm a tiny little woman.
We also ordered the sweet potato chips. These were great - tasty and perfectly cooked, and a generous helping.
Pretty tasty food... Basically an old school fish and chip style burger with a brioche bun. Bit sloppy but delicious. Chips, nothing to write home about.
Recently opened I had to try it out. Staff were so friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is amazing, great decor and space. I am a big "hot chip" lover and these chips were the best! Only downside the portions are a little small and maybe little expensive. Maybe if portions were bigger for what you pay this would be somewhere is would regularly go. Can't wait to come back again to give it another go. Love supporting the local community!
I really like this fish & chip shop for a few reasons, its super clean and has a cool decor, they use australian seafood, its well priced and most importanly is gluten free!

I read the other reviews before starting mine and was surprised that 3 out of 4 rated poorly!?! Then I noticed that one was written a year ago (previous owners I'm guessing as from my knowledge the eatery only opened a couple of months ago..), and the other one, which pressed another fish shop up the road and really close to where I live, but don't go to, as when I've tried it twice, the oil they were using tasted overused and atrocious, (won't name names..), so I'm guessing in that case either an underdeveloped palette or an affiliation with the later..
Anyway back to my review of Sweet Salt if for whatever reason you didn't like their fish, try their burger!!!
This place is now under new management! Food is great, salads were yum. Traditional fish n chips with a few modern tastes! Staff were friendly! Keep it up guys!!!

Had one of the set packs with fish, chips, prawns etc and I thought it was the best old school style fish and chip meals I've had in years. Fresh fish cooked in fresh oil (which you don't often get) and done perfectly. Will be getting it again tonight for the family.

The fish tasted super fresh and was cooked just right. All the other food great too. Great fit out. Very clean, including the toilet! (too often other places aren't).
Sweet Salt is a great alternative to traditional fish and chips. The menu has heaps of interesting dishes and there's something new to try each time. Particular favourites are the soft shell crab buns and the fish stick sanga. Food is always tasty, staff is always friendly, you can't go wrong with this place!

Loved it!! Such a cool take on fish and chips, the menu has some classic choices and some really interesting variations - the fish taco was delish, and the soft shell crab came with beautiful little edible flowers! 🌸💛 Nice vibe and interior with cool music, I'll be back again soon!
The standard fish & chip meals are beautiful (the chips, grilled fish, etc).
But the unique meals, that you won't find elsewhere, are what we really loved.
The soft-shell crab burger, Gipp'wich burger, gummy and crab-dimmies are favourites. The flavours are amazing!
The sauces blew our socks off.
Looking forward to trying more from the menu.
We eat-in and enjoyed the atmosphere.

First online review ever, why bother I say normally. But this was incredible, beautiful, fresh (non greasy) and unique fish and chips. Another welcome edition to my many take away places in Northcote.
Up market fish and chips! The menu is interesting, more than just your average local fish & chip shop. Sharing is encouraged, we tried the steamed crab dimmies which are made fresh on the premises, delicious with a great dipping sauce, fish taco with house made kim chi and prawn & fish spring rolls that had a layer of nori under the crisp wrapper. The fish fillet was thick and with a light crunchy batter coating, fries served in a basket were crunchy with fluffy centre, but large serve was too much after sampling the smaller dishes. There are salads and interesting sauces to compliment the dishes. Wine, beer & soft drinks available when eating in. Decor is modern & fresh. Will definitely come back to try some of the other great dishes.

I’ve been to this place several times in the last 3 years, this time was last Friday which I found a completely refreshing place, more colourful, bright and spotless, but the big surprise was talking with David and the Chef such a awesome, warm and kind people . They explain the new system to order from the the people which it’s the best, you don’t have to stay on the line waiting to order. Also they explain the new menu which has vary good twist more options and most important more more flavour.
I had the double chezzy one OMG what a good burger, honestly I haven’t had a good burger like this in years, I don’t actually remember when it was. Even my partner had a salad and fish so simply but fresh and tasty.
Also not very often you get a sweet potatoes chips like this one, there are chunks not like other places is just pieces and leftovers this one was big chunks. Just please you do a favor see this photos and go and try anything on the Menu, guarantee you want to come back for more
Obsessed with the kale salad here. It's got pomegranate, silvered almonds, grated apple and pure happiness. Got the grilled spicy chicken breast as well, and it was ACTUALLY a little spicy. Warmed my heart. Originally came with a coeliac friend years ago and have not stopped ranting about this place. Great example of an dietary inclusive place! Staff are super sweet, really passionate. (I put all the stuff on the same plate).

I walked into this place because of its neon sign and was immediately welcomed by the owner who went above and beyond to provide ab exceptional dinning in experience. From checking whether we had any food allergies to ensuring our meal was to our liking, it was the type of customer service that is missing from many places these day. The food was delicious at left me wanting more, even after being fulfilled. Will be going back and highly recommend.
Stumbled across this place on the weekend. Amazing gluten free/coeliac safe options. I had this beast of a fried chicken burger. It was a mission to finish it but definitely an enjoyable one.

The best gluten free fish and chips I’ve ever had! The owners are very sweet and super hospitable. Think it’s awesome to have a safe, gluten-free haven on one of Melbourne’s most iconic streets! 10/10 would recommend and will be coming back for sure ☺️
My partner and I just left after eating lunch here. The service from the minute we walked in was amazing. The food was even better, and one of the staff members even cooked us up some complimentary gluten free donuts because he didn’t want us to ‘miss out on trying’. You definitely don’t see many restaurants do that. As my partner is coeliac, we felt more than safe eating here! Awesome work guys
