Review Primo - Northcote

Two Sheds
A mighty fine experience. We had a Lamborghini, a mushroom and a prosciutto and fig pizza. Our friend had the gnocchi. The food was excellent. The pizzas were very tasty with terrific toppings and just the right crust. Service was terrific here tonight from our young server. A lovely gourmet pizza experience. Highly recommended.

Lovely pizza & pasta spot that has plenty of delicious vegetarian options! The outside seating has a nice ambiance on summer nights

Made a booking at Primo, had not been before. Surprised my partner for her birthday with her closest friends attending. The staff were amazing and genuinely helpful. They certainly made our evening very enjoyable as they went above and beyond, very attentive, even brought out dessert with a sparkler on it without us requesting. The food was amazing and we all had a wonderful time, will definitely be back. Thanks again.

Easily the best pizza I've ever had in Melbourne. They've chosen to do a smaller range of pizzas exceptionally well and I highly recommend the vegetarian pizzas if you want a decadent feed. Oh, and don't forget to finish off with a tiramisu.

Holy shoot - the pizza is AMAZING at this place! The staff kindly accommodated my timing with booking a table, having a pizza made before I arrived, and putting it in the oven the moment I arrived, so that I could make it to a movie across the road on time. Attentive, thoughtful, quality service. And a lovely atmosphere inside the restaurant. My absolute go-to in the area.

First time trying Primo, we had a fabulous time. Pizzas were delicious and the salad so fresh. The wait staff at out table was new and she was so lovely and did a wonderful job. Will definitely return!!!!

Always the best Pizza and Pasta!! A great local place and easy casual atmosphere, and reasonable prices!!

My fave pizza place in Northcote! Great food, wine and lovely staff! Perfect place to have dinner before or after going to the cinema (across the road) or even just a casual dinner with friends.

3.5. Ordered through Uber eats and food came relatively fast. Rigatoni lamb ragu was very tasty although wouldn’t have minded a slightly larger portion for the price. Gnocchi was also pretty good. The garlic baguette didn’t have much garlic but we did like the bread.
Jake Unsworth
⭐⭐⭐

Ordered on deliveroo so rating is based solely on the food. The garlic bread was so hard it seemed almost stale. Both pizzas were just okay and lacked flavour, the veggie one was tastier but still just okay. As a huge pizza lover and at nearly $25 a pizza I expect better than just okay.

Best pizza in Northcote and Coeliac friendly! Incredible food and great service. Love this place!
Foodadventureswithliv
congratulations to Primo on becoming a newly coeliac accredited restaurant... this is what made me visit! being coeliac is really hard, especially when it comes to cross contamination, you can never be to sure BUT with coeliac accredited restaurants, you can feel safe with no worries!

my mum and i tried the fig & roquette salad with the most delicious “magico” pizza!! i was so impressed, the flavours through this pizza was amazing and pizza base was incredible! i loved that the pizza wasn’t very oily and it was cooked nicely

the staff were wonderful, super helpful and very quick! they took the time to chat to us and were very friendly, making sure we loved our experience!

definitely will be back for more! :)

Ordered the lamb ragu it looked like spaghetti Bolognese sauce, it tasted sweet too it wasn't nice wouldn't recommend ordering that

Never been here in person before, so can not said anything about the service or the atmosphere here itself. But from what we got from the Uber eat, the pizza Otto was unexpectedly delicious, the favour was great but light, the crust was really good, would definitely want to visit next time.

I’ve only ever ordered food from here via Uber eats so I can’t speak on behalf of the in house experience, staff or atmosphere. I can however say confidently that the pizza I am eating is beautiful! One of the best bases and crusts I’ve ever had and the toppings are full of flavour and yet not overpowering at all. Hoping the next time I order it’s the same and I can see myself becoming a long time regular 🙌

Would highly recommend this place, perfect vibe, perfect food including hand made pasta, friendly staff and quick service !

This was some if the best pasta I’ve had in Melbourne. The kids serves of meatballs was fantastic. The pizza was tasty - both were demolished (including the crust). I had the chicken fettuccine. Handmade pasta was delicious. So much chicken in this serving and the serving size was generous. Husband had the special prawn linguine, which he loved. All up it was amazing.

A mate and I had dinner here on the weekend. I had the Lamborghini pizza which was 12 hour slow cooked lamb, garlic, goats cheese, fior di latte, olives, lemon and rosemary! Wow what a great pizza. The lamb was really well cooked, and I liked the lemon and fior di latte.

The crust was a bit thick and heavy for me but that's a minor criticism.

My mate had the Roberta Pizza which was tomato, sopressa, chilli, honey, fior de latte and stracciatella cheese. I tried this pizza too and it was good but I got the winner.

Oh and I also tried a Barrel Aged Negroni for World Gin Week which was Four Pillars Spiced Gin, Oscar 697, Rosso Vermouth, and Gran Classico. Mmnn unfortunately for me this just didn’t work. I was really didn’t like it and when I tried to palm it off to my mate, well that didn’t work either hahaha

The service was excellent and we thankfully managed to get a table even though the place was almost full. The waiter who served us was friendly and attentive.

Overall it was a great experience and definitely worth a visit.

primo is my favourite place to out for dinner! in a great location with easy parking and provides the best vegan pizzas in melbourne, as well as lovely staff!

Absolutely excellent quality and well thought out menu! I loved the fig and goats cheese salad, the Pizzas are also very well done (Both quality base and ingredients). The pastas are very hit and miss though, I would suggest going for a salad or entree and then a pizza as they are by far the standouts. Would come back here again soon! The only negative is that the place is a bit small and dark, but service is good and food is definitely of a good standard.
Roberto Gelvezon
Very nice upmarket atmosphere. Small-ish menu, which isn’t a bad thing.
Pizza flavour combinations work especially with the honey. Pasta also to a high standard.
Zoe Garkinis
Second time I’ve been here, ordered the rigatoni was not had, quite rich. Preferred the special pasta I got last time. Family enjoyed the pizza and seafood pasta. Rocket, goats cheese and fig salad was nice. Wish zomato still had half ratings, overall not wow but above average, not quite a 4 for me but better than 3.

Primo restaurant is a somewhat typical new age pizza shop turning your classic meat laden pizza and modernizing it with a new range of ingredients. Overall it can be said that the pizza (the only thing we had that night) was quite pleasant.

The Otto pizza was well presented and and the flavors balanced well. The dough was a little dry and could do with a fraction less oven time considering all the ingredients are quite sensitive to cooking time. The Westgarth was a delightful pizza but the ingredients once again became sadly a little dry in the oven and could do with a fraction more olive oil to help them retain their flavour.

The beer list is not extensive and lacks a lot of variety similar to that of the wine menu. Given the upmarket promotion the lack of range acts to counter this.

A class atmosphere, with cute booths and a modern/kitsch feel. The staff were super attentive but smoothly so, not overbearing. We got a delish aperol spritz from an inspiring looking cocktail list to start. For a main we got a vegan pizza to share (there are heaps of vegan options), the fig & rocket salad and a garlic baguette, which was perfect for two people. The pizza was lovely and chewy (with a slightly thicker crust than other woodfired pizzerias, I would say), the salad was nicely dressed and didn't skimp on the cheese and fig component, and the garlic baguette was a chewy sourdough affair. Keen to try more

I love the ambience here. Of course the food and service is also great! Great spot for a meal before catching a movie across the street at Palace cinemas :)
Caffiend
Went here on Saturday for a quick dinner before a gig because Bar Nonno (awesome pizza) is closed for renos. Nice fit out and wait staff but the pizza was below-par. Disappointed to see an absence of a woodfire oven in the open kitchen and the sauce used on the pizzas tasted like straight up tomato paste.

The cold draught through the restaurant was enough for me never to return. The food was ok. Nothing special.
The pastas were over priced for the portion size. Entree size for main prices .
Me
Lovely modern Italian restaurant. Each time I’ve been the staff have been really attentive and friendly. The fit out is cool and I love the booths.

Pizzas are tasty and I particularly like their pairings, for example the Otto is amazing with the Congo potato and rosemary 👌

The salad we tried this time was the fig and rocket salad which had stracciatella. The stracciatella was so melt in your mouth, yum.

We finished off with the sticky date pudding which I wish I didn’t share it was that good! Last time we came they had a sundae on the menu and that was amazing too.

Soggy and tasteless pizza.
Way too thin as it fell apart in the middle and toppings came off. Hopefully this was down to poor staff and not their usual way of making pizza.
Looks wise its a nice venue.
Speccy
Tues $20 pizza + vino night good value. Pizzas have a crispy thin base - perfect. Interesting flavors & nice to see & plethora of sides/ extra toppings. Nice to see the are accommodating in changes to pizzas too. The vegan with an eggplant purée base was amazing - & tasted fantastic covered in pulled lamb & goats cheese!!
John Walta
Over priced meals which were only OK - small meal portions which left most of us hungry, staff didn't really seem warm or caring in any way. will not be returning.
Andrew Collins
Great staff, good food and service.
We order delivery from here most weeks and the food is very consistent and the salads delicious!
Just quickly(!!).. They were very busy the other week and to our surprise (and delight) they added a voucher to our delivery and a short note to apologise if any inconvenience caused (there wasn't). So, a good crew who has become our weekend pizza go to.

Ridiculously delicious pasta! Ordered the wild mushroom fettucine and wow - Al Dente, silky, cooked to perfection. Flavours were all there. Will definitely be back for the pasta!

Primo is great! Last night was the third time we have been there and once again it didn't disappoint. Great place to eat if you happen to be catching a movie at the Westgarth. Service is great. Friendly and attentive. Pizzas are in my opinion the best in the area. Firm crust without being burnt or dry. We had the Roberta pizza with sopressa and honey and the Maria with lamb and cherry tomatoes. Both interesting and tasty. Definitely recommend.
Lauren Turner
We ordered the lamb and veg gnocchi and the spaghetti and meatballs, which cost $45 for both. We felt the price point was high for pasta initially and were then very disappointed with the small portion sizes. The dishes were ok but small and unsatisfying. My partner picked up the take away order and felt quite a negative vibe from the staff as well. Overall not a great experience and we won't be rushing back!

I love this place! Best pizza dough in the neighbourhood and the handmade pasta is definitely 'Primo'! Surprisingly good wine selection to top it off. Nice and cosy on a winter's night!

Delicious and fresh! We always have a great meal at primo. The atmosphere is always cozy and the pizzas are lovely. Will be coming back again and again!

Had an awesome dinner here last Friday night! We shared the fettucine with wild mushroom and pecorino to start and also split the Capriccio. Finished off with an amazing "Primo tiramisu". I've been here a couple of times now and keep coming back. Cool vibe

Ordered the lamb gnocchi. I was really impressed with the quality of pasta and generous serving size. Delicious. Thanks guys, will definitely be coming back!

We got the margarita pizza and the zucchini, eggplant and cherry tomato pizza. The margarita was a bit bland tasting but I added olives to it for an extra $3 which was a good idea in the end. Cherry tom pizza was yummy with a great topping combo - but I think the bases were just too dry and chewy - I see a lot of reviews that say the same as well.
Gab Coles
The pasta was incredible! I ordered the Gnocchi al Rago as Gnocchi is always my go to order and it was cooked to perfection! I was very impressed with the inclusion of a variety of vegetables in the dish and the lack of variety is what makes me usually feel guilty about ordering pasta. If I was Italian and had a Nona I would say that it reminded me of her cooking... will definitely be coming back.
Tom Davies
We had the Fettuccine Polio ai Funghi and Gnocchi al Rago and they hit the spot. The pasta was al dente and reminiscent of the quality of meals we used to share in Sorrento, Italy. The tender lamb in the Gnocchi ragu was a highlight for me, such a delicious dish, particularly in the colder months it helped warm the soul.
Thank you, we will be back soon (probably next Sunday)

I've had Primo three times in the last 10 days since the new menu launched. The pizza bases are better than ever and the new combinations are on point. Highly recommend the Otto and Magico! They are now also serving handmade pastas. We tried the meatball and the seafood - both were next level. Talk about winter comfort food!!

My favourite pizza place in the north. The mussels are amazing. Good selection of pizzas, they are all amazing. Super cool atmosphere and service.

Been walking past here for a while thinking about trying it out. Its a nice place, the decor is maybe a bit dramatic, but the atmosphere is nice, and the waitstaff were all really lovely :) . The food is where I get a bit conflicted. The pizza bases were absolutely delicious, the cheese was nice, but apart from that there was little flavour. I had one with zucchini and cherry tomato, considering apart from cheese these were the only two ingredients, I expected a bit more than 3 measly cherry toms cut in half. Even if they were cut in quarters and spread further I wouldn't have minded so much. the zucchini was so thin it had no taste and the mint, (which I'm not sure existed) was so sparse and cut so thin it looked like dill (which would not be a problem if I could actually taste it). All in all, it was a bland looking and tasting pizza, even if the base was perfectly done. For $21 it felt a bit like highway robbery (although maybe I'm just used to being a bit more stingy). P.S throwaway paper menus/placemats? really? Where is the love for the trees and our planet? Its not trendy, cool or different (in fact its very McDonalds), its just wasteful.

A very disappointing 2nd visit to Primo. We ordered take away as we were quite happy with our first visit, we also ordered the same dishes again. I've posted a picture of the lamb ragu pappardelle as a reference. There was only a couple of pieces of lamb, the pasta was dry and stuck together and also stuck to the paper lining of the take away container. A massive shame as we wanted to love Primo and make it a regular, though the dish was basically inedible.

I've wanted to try this pizza place for such a long time as their menu looks really interesting. Unfortunately, it was a realllly bad experience. We ordered takeaway and both pizzas were dry, hard and crunchy and flavourless. Not enjoyable at all. The gem salad was the only enjoyable thing we got delivered. We actually had a redemption pizza from another place because we were so disappointed with Primo. Primo was certainly NOT Primo.

Pizzas are ok...not terrible but nothing to rave about. Was disappointed with the nutella donuts though. They were just warm dough smothered in cinnamon sugar with slight drizzle of nutella on the top. The place itself is small and so everytime someone walks past the automatic doors it opens and on a chilly night, gusts of wind come in. Both my friend and i ate with a scarf on all night. However, service was attentive and was excellent in ensuring our water glasses were always full. Honestly, i probably wouldn't come back
Enjoy It
Lovely buzzy atmosphere , small venue and surprisingly for a Monday night packed full. Service was absolutely spot on, nothing was too much trouble every member of floor staff was superb from the owner to the trainee on her first shift. Really good vibe felt like everyone was happy to b working there. Even took a walk in table at 10:30 when I'm sure everyone was starting to think of home 🤓pizza was gorgeous , an interesting ingredient selection perfectly made. Tiny niggle, pasta special could have done with a tad more seasoning for me but of course that's just a personal taste thing, I can never get enough salt :) Shall definitely return
Melinda
A little gem in the heart of Westgarth!! Wholesome food with impeccable customer service. The decor and feel of the place is wonderful but hands down their soft serve machine is what I live for!! :))

We finally went to Primo last Friday after saying we would go since they opened! We had a great pre movie dinner.. nice to see some good snack type starters including delicious potato cakes on the menu. We had the garden party pizza which was a stand out - something I wouldn't usually say about a vegetarian pizza but the squash on it was really different and spot on. We finished with the not too sweet cherry tart. Again- delicious. These guys are on to a good thing and we will be back again in no time.
Hello. Imnikki
For a person who's not a fan of pizza, I seem to be having one or two pizza too many since the start of 2017. However, sometimes when you do things out of your comfort zone, you will end up discovering pleasant surprises along the way. Primo is one of such wonderful finds. Let's start off with the neon sign of a hand twirling a pizza located smack bang on the front of the shop that attracts your attention whether you like it or not. Then there's the casual yet hip interior, which has been achieved by simple and minimalist designs. Now moving on to the welcoming and affable service, in particularly from the guy who appears to the the floor manager (?). He saw me curiously poking at the styrofoam-like soundproof-material wall and proceed to explain to me about the type of material it was, its purpose and advantages. Finally the icing on the cake - the absolutely delectable pizza. Our starter of mortadella was good but nothing spectacular, but the pizza (we ordered the Roberta) was amazing. The puffed edges were fluffy and light, and the base were thin and crispy. More than decent serves of pepperonis and cream scattered about, with beautiful flavours from the sauce and chilli. I did however only detect a very subtle, almost non-existent, hint of the honey which was listed as a main ingredient, but it was this subtle underlying sweetness that help undercut all the savoury flavours. But let's not forgetting the cherry on top to cap of such a memorable meal - the velvety smooth and creamy soft serve and the house-made blackberry and cherry pie with a most buttery pastry. Save to say I walked out of Primo a few kilograms heavier, but a whole lot happier.

A great new neighbourhood spot! Huge variety of toppings and plenty of options for vego/vegan diners as well. The balsamic calamari, iceberg lettuce and fave bean salad are great starters if you're sharing or feel like more than just pizza. (I have a soft spot for the rotating flavours of in-house soft serve, and the nougat sundae as well!) Really nice in summer, with an Aperol Spritz in hand and a seat in the sunny window facing the street.
Took 12 workmates here for our Christmas dinner and the set menu covered everyone's preferences with tons of variety. But my favourite time to visit is always for quick dinner before a movie at Westgarth cinema across the road!

What a spot! Had both family & friends in town and only one night to see everyone. It was like Primo was made for this perfect scenario - restaurant-y enough for mums to feel like they're somewhere special, and cool/designed/casual enough for friends to feel like it's the chillest place to hang.
Vegan pizza was awesome - and who doesn't love POTATO SCALLOPS!
Andrew I Love Food But It Makes Me Fat
Looks like great pizza from Naples but the taste just isn't there for me. Perhaps more salt needed but none on the table. I'll stick to Pizzaiolo in Thornbury
Noodle
These pizza bases are some of the best in the city. Light, slightly chewy, and balanced by fragrant tomato and creamy mozzarella. The service is pro and the space perfect for small groups. Noise is a real problem at a lot of new, good looking restaurants, but it's not an issue at all here. I'm not vegetarian, but it's cool to see almost half the pizza menu is veggie (or vegan) and they offer gluten-free bases too.
Chevyc
Had lots of Primo because they make good, mainly meat based pizzas. Tonight, still waiting for delivery after 90 minutes!! Meant to take 40 minutes, rang and offered, "it's on its way." Live 5 minutes away!! DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY IF YOUR HUNGRY. So very disappointing!

Delicious food! Second time here. We've had items on the special menu; the potato cakes & croquettes and a few different pizzas. Must try the Primo Sundae! We are most impressed. Friendly service. We'll be back soon.

Great little pizza place, very friendly, helpful and efficient seevice and the pizzas were delicious!! We had the vegan pizza which was mushrroms and potato cream with added mozzerella and the roberta which was pancetta, stratticialla and honey both were interesting and delicious!!! The fit out of the restaurant is really nice as well.
Rachel Toop
This is my new favourite local pizza joint! The Margherita is particularly A+. Amazing bases, and toppings are brilliant. Service is excellent too.
KatMmm
We dropped by for Sunday lunch. The service was friendly but average.

The pizzas were made with really amazing produce (and smallgoods!) and presented on fluffy, chewy and crispy bases! The house white was light, dry and perfect for a spring day. I'll be back.
AFoodie
really enjoyed our takeaway.
garden pizza was a light and healthy take on pizza which was still delicious, and the salads were all super fresh and tasty.
loved the fava bean and fresh pea ricotta salad!

I've always loved the deep rich flavours of a New York pizza sauce. Primo does that. I've not tasted a pizza this good in Melbourne ever. The menu looks excellent: really interesting toppings. The manager knows how I feel about the sour cherry pie. It had a good authentic sour flavour but the pastry is not short enough in my opinion. It should also be served at room temperature or warm, which will bring out all the flavours. Apple pie with a cheese crust pasty could also be good as a special. Just saying. Mention must also go out to the really great potato cakes and aioli. I'm really happy about this place. I know pizza is a personal taste thing. Some people like the transparent smear of something vaguely resembling tomato sauce on their pizza. No thanks. Give me Primo, rich, herbalishuss and salty. Excellent pastry recipe in the book.
https://www.amazon.com/York-Cult-Recipes-Marc-Grossman/dp/1454912065
P.S. we keep discovering delicious pizza options like my fave the salato ma buono. Salty and yummy

Some months later
How is it that Primo's pizzas DONT HAVE A SLOPPY CENTRE when others do ( won't mention any names). Just got takeaway from Primo and was expecting the worst after a 20 minute drive. Wrapped my boxes in blankets! Still warm! No sloppy centre! Fabulous as usual!
Bleong
We got UBEReats delivery from here and the pizzas were pretty as a picture, even after the car trip. The Salad Pizza not only looked amazing, but didn't leave any trace of 'pizza regret', thanks to the thin base and fresh toppings. The Artie Pizza was also delicious, with just a bit of a kick. I will definitely order from here again!
Melbourne Eats
The new Primo at Westgarth is suuuuuuuper good. We had the Margherita, White Boy and the Tutto Benne and all were absolutely superb. The service is fantastic, the new fit out looks great and it's an all round winner of a place. Hats off to you guys. Bellissimo!
