Review Taxiboat - Northcote

Managed to snap a few pics before annihilating these dishes! Wonderful combination of flavours! Highly recommend Thai basil King with prawn and sambal barramundi. Very busy on a Friday night but service was quick and staff were great. Decor is lovely, like sitting in a private dining room. Right across the road from the Westgath theatre, perfect spot for dinner and a movie.

Lovely ambiance and the food was delicious. I was a bit worried by the green curry because of just how GREEN it was, but no it was perfect 👌🏽

I went to this restaurant last night after a great experience the night before post theatre the food cannot be faulted Curry puffs to die for . Had different curries both night the pad Thai is amazing flavourful great quality ingredients. Staff very kind gentle people. I went with friends the first night family the. Second all were full of praise and keen to return . As Arnie says I’ll be back.

My local 'go to place' for dinner and has been for years. Consistently good food at not outrageous prices. Decor and ambience of 'Taxi' (as my family refer to it), are conducive to relaxation. Lighting is perfect. You can see what you're eating, but not feel like a 'deer in headlights'. Staff are pleasant - unobstrusive but professional. Try the rockling with sake and bok choy, and also Mongolian beef, finish with coconut panacotta. Wine by the glass or bottle at reasonable prices. Big plus for me is there's no loud head banging music.

Taxiboat is very good. We went in a group of 16 and were catered for brilliantly. The venue is lovely. The food was delicious. The service was extremely good. Taxiboat is a very sound eating option in this area.

While I found the staff attentive and the vibe wonderful. I had an average experience overall. I found a very long hair in my Thai Green Curry but I persisted without fuss. The food was ready far too quickly to have been prepared fresh in my opinion and the flavour was really lacking in my dish. I ordered an Asahi beer which came in a bottle. It was poured into a beer glass (the likes of which did not fit the entire contents of the bottle) the remainder of my bottled beer I never saw again. I was even asked if I'd like another but I was still scratching my head as to who had the rest of my first beer? Staff? Upon payment we were asked awkwardly if we would like to tip. I personally think the experience did not warrant a tip or to be put on the spot like that to give one. I'm unlikely to return.

7/10 for the Asian (mostly South East Asian) journey $38.00 banquet menu, 8/10 for their extensive wine selection, 8/10 red hue ambiance and 10/10 for service, thank you Kim, Julia, Sofie and team

Big menu, lots of vegan options and impeccable service! Really nice spot
The Egg Party
As a vegetarian, I always love to see a menu where you can choose plant and animal based proteins for each dish. There is this lovely communal vibe to the food, this shared experience between people with different tastes. This was certainly my experience at Taxiboat.

I have visited the restaurant twice now and have loved each time. The owner, Kim, was there on both occasions and chatted with us warmly before each meal. My favourite dish was the heavenly duck, the rich sauce and faux duck was amazing! Would go back for this alone but I looking forward to trying a few more things.

Had an ace time, thanks!

We were welcomed and served by warm and friendly staff. Great variety on both the wine and food menus. The atmosphere is lovely, where the restaurant isn’t loud and the decor is just beautiful. The food was amazing. Myself and my accompanying diners thoroughly enjoyed all of our choices from the entrees of spring rolls and pork buns to our mains that consisted of Kung pao chicken, Mongolian beef, and calamari. Couldn’t fault anything. Would come back in a heartbeat!

My partner is fructose intolerant so an absolute joy to find a restaurant that proactively provides no onion, no garlic meal options and actively cater for people on FODMAP diets. She was over the moon to see SOOOH many choices for her & the food was sensational.......the rockling in sake was stunning......the most delicate, tasty fish I've eaten in years !!! The staff & owner were wonderful, so friendly & helpful. We'll certainly be going again. The Best restaurant i/we've been to for a long time.......do yourself a favour ....!!!!

Service was terrible - had to ask for chopsticks, ordered a side of rice which never came and was never given a dessert menu or asked how it was. The food was average and overpriced. They didn’t have vinegar for xiao long bao, the tofu pad Thai had a pitiful amount of tofu and serving sizes are small across the board.

I was really looking forward to coming here because I saw a lot of amazing reviews. It was a let down and I don't know if we ordered the wrong food or came on the wrong night. The sambal barramundi sounded promising, but the taste didn't linger in my mouth so it wasn't memorable. Then we had the Peking duck hokkien noodles. Ate these dishes with jasmine rice and that was another let down, it was gluggy and tasted like someone had used their hand to knead the rice or something. The staff were the biggest let down. Gave the signal that I was ready to order and they acknowledged but continued to have a chat for a good 5 minutes before coming over. Had to repeat myself everytime I pointed to something on the menu when ordering, very poor listening skills. The restaurant was busy but the staff were walking and clearing/snatchingi things so fast that I felt rushed eating my dinner. Don't think I'll be coming back

4.5 With a vast, pan Asian menu on offer Taxi Boat is certainly not your typical, strictly Thai restaurant. Nevertheless, the Thai food we sampled were beautifully executed and pays homage to their Thai tradition, all the while catering to a Western palate without losing any of the qualities that make Thai food so appealing.
Espy Eats
In this ambient space with dim lightning and relaxing music, we started with an array of entrees from this pan Asian menu, Shanghai pork dumplings, Vegetarian curry puffs and Lamb ribs. As we waited, we realized there was a quick service for the pre movie diners as various tables all left at the same time. The authentic Asian meals with quick turn around make for a great movie night combo st Westgarth cinemas.

As the Mongolian lamb ribs hit the table the smoky aromas made my mouth water. The meat from these sticky ribs just fell off the bone with a mildly sweet Chinese spice.

The curry puffs where piping hot with a soft filling and a lovely outer crunch. We wrapped in lettuce for added crunch.

The dumplings were hot and soup filled and delicious. I added a sweet hot chilli sauce for some oomph.

For mains we chose the Pad Thai (with prawn) and Kung pao chili chicken.

The kung pao chicken had a great hit of chili (it was a real Kung Pow) and a wonderful array of stir fried veggies, fortunately for me we had some roti and satay sauce and I was able to calm my mouth down.

The pad Thai had great flavour of the wok, lovely bits of egg and been-shoots and was kept fresh with the generous lemon juice squeezed over the top. Don’t forget you need to order the peanuts to be added if you want.

For dessert we chose the coconut pana cotta with pandang leaves. It arrived with a wonderful wobble and this coconuty pana was just delicious, the inclusion of passionfruit added a lovey burst of tang. Just yum.
The Gluten-Free Foodie
Absolutely delicious food in a lovely ambient setting! We went after a movie and had the Roast Duck on Heaven with the Special Fried Rice (both requested GF). The dishes were yum and good portion size. I thought the food was fresh, delicious and a little spin on the classics without detracting from it. The service was quick and waitresses made great suggestions including reiterating what could be GF. There was good dietary signage on the menu. We would definitely come back.
Some Bunee Loves Food
4.5. This restaurant is of Pan-asian cuisine which does not use MSG or corn oil and cater for vegan customers. They have curries, fried rice, dumplings, spring rolls, tom yum soup which are different food from across Asia and something for everyone!

We had the Chicken San Choy Bao as entree. The filling with mince had the best taste and was a bit salty but matched perfected when eating with the fresh lettuce cup.

For mains, we got the Thai red curry with roast duck and the fresh rockling with Thai sweet chilli plum. The curry was very flavoursome and the duck was very tender. The rockling was very lightly battered and the sweet chilli plum sauce was very nice. It was like a sauce from 'sweet and sour pork' but a bit lighter and spicy. This was my favourite dish!

We had some coconut rice to serve. It was cooked with coconut cream, ginger and an infusion of pandan. It looked like broken rice so it was very small.

For desserts, we had the pandan pannacotta and the coconut ice cream. The pannacotta was really nice and smooth but lacking a bit of pandan flavour, and when topped with passionfruit, it gives a bit of a sour and crunchy texture to it. I prefer it without the passionfruit sauce. The coconut ice cream was very creamy and full of coconut flavour.

Thank you Taxiboat, we enjoyed our experience tonight!

I didn't expect this place to be so fancy lucky we were dressed for the occasion. A beautiful setting and a great atmosphere and vibe. Great for a date! The service was very attentive. A menu with great variety of options. Food was delivered to a high quality and beautifully presented. Such a great night ***Disclaimer: although the restaurant has generously invited me to their restaurant this review is still based on my genuine opinion.
Good Food Good Mood
We were invited to Taxiboat last night an impressive pan Asian restaurant in a fabulous location directly opposite the cinema in Northcote and right across from the tram. We were immediately wowed by the stunning modern interior and excited by the extensive and delicious sounding menu.

We chose to order the prawn dumplings and Mongolian lamb ribs for entree. That moorish sticky sauces on the ribs was absolutely delectable and the ribs themselves perfectly cooked. The dumplings were enjoyable too.

For main we had the Thai basil prawns and the Cantonese beef with a serve of rice. The Thai basil dish was packed full of flavour and had quite the kick to it and the prawns were beautifully cooked. Whilst Cantonese flavours are generally more delicate I loved the sweet marinade on this and the beef was very tender.

We finished up with the coconut ice cream for dessert as well as the coconut panna cotta which had the subtle inclusion of pandan leaf which gave it a real fusion twist. The menu here is able to combine the best of several types of Asian cuisine in a way that really flows and shines together. Both dishes were lovely and light and a very refreshing way to end the meal.
Sunny Days Melbourne
Situated just across from the Palace Westgarth Cinema in Northcote is this beautiful pan Asian restaurant with a fantastic cosy fit out. The service was top notch from start to finish - our empty glasses were constantly being filled, the food came out in a timely manner and everything was served with a smile.

We had the sambal barramundi which was the highlight of the night. The fish was cooked perfectly with an incredibly crispy skin. The sambal was super addictive and we could taste the care and effort that was taken to produce this sauce.

The green curry had a lovely, clean taste - no bottled pastes here! It was unique, creamy and delicious. There were generous amounts of chicken and potatoes.

We had the privilege of trying one of their new dishes - XO mapo tofu. The tofu was steamed well resulting in a silky texture. The XO sauce was moreish - the chicken mince had a complex balance of spices and flavours.

Thank you Taxiboat, a great time was had by all!
Hassank27
Excellent food. Loved the pad Thai and Thai green curry.
Dim sums are really nice too. Service is great and owner is very friendly. Will defiantly go back again and try other dishes.
It’s a very fusion kinda food. Lots of flavors.

I found it quite strange for an Asian restaurant to not have any chilli in their kitchen?! The venue itself is quite nice inside and has some decent space for large groups. I have been here a few times, the first time being ok, the 2nd and 3rd were to try and give it another go to see if there was any improvement... But it was the same. The food is quite bland and not so worth the prices that are listed in the menu, compared to what you can get somewhere else in the area.
Jake Unsworth
It was our first time here and we were not disappointed. The service was outstanding and our waitress was so nice. The wine was brilliant and the food was great, with our stand out dishes being the calamari and the homemade vegetarian curry puffs. The atmosphere was relaxed and sharing food is very much recommended.
Eat Me!
Been here a few times. Well rendered south East Asian classics. The chefs know how to cook but haven’t had a real standout dish yet. All really solid though.
JB
Small place but delivers a real punch when it comes to a mix of Asian offerings. For me the real treat were the lamb ribs, delicious. Teriyaki chicken was a solid dish. Generous serves and well priced. Next visit will try the duck. Looking forward to going back.

Taxiboat is an amazing asian restaurant located in Northcote. We were lucky enough to try the san choy bao, mongolian lamb ribs, red curry, basil stirfried. We totally love the lamb ribs, the juicy meat was easily pulled off the bone.

We also got to try the coconut panna cotta, which was really good! The combination of the passion fruit on top of coconut provides a great contrast of taste in the dish.

The overall atmosphere of the place is really nice, with dim lights. The staff was really friendly and welcoming as well!

Went for a nice Dinner on Thursday 2nd Nov and where better than the foodies hub of Northcote, we do love our Thai food and taxiboat had a Fairly good rep for supplying a fine meal.

We took up the Thursday special with Chinese pork dumpling, spring rolls with the Mains of Roast duck on Heaven and Cantonese beef..... we had a wonderful meal and the service was great, would happily return to try more of this establishment's offerings.

Just ordered home delivery and not very impressed. Pros: Sweet potato noodles are delicious, lamb ribs are tasty
Cons: For the price the serving sizes were small, the meegoreng didn't taste right at all, it was like a tomato sauce, the lamb ribs were very fatty.
We won't be ordering from here again.
Marcello Rogliano
Great food and cute little place. Pork spring rolls, chicken and chive dumplings, duck and Thai green curry a big hit.Definitely coming back. 100% recommend it.
Two Sheds
We wandered in to Taxiboat on spec after seeing a flick at the Westgarth (Dunkirk: confronting but excellent). We planned to debrief at Kelvin and did so over a fetching negroni. The good people at Taxiboat said they'd find us a table and would call. They did so. The call came through that there was a cancellation and we had a spot. We had such a nice time here. We were so impressed with the management and staff. Our very late request for a table was handled politely and efficiently. The service throughout was excellent too. We loved the food here. It's modern Asian. We had three excellent dishes. Rocking, duck and sweet potato with noodles. We were surprised by the generous sizes of the mains. The flavours were wonderful. They were accompanied by a Vickery Eden Valley riesling, a lovely riesling indeed. It was a lovely combination. No wonder Taxiboat was full, front and back. It's a lovely restaurant with excellent food at reasonable prices and good service. You can't fail with that business model. We'll be back for sure.

Quite little and cozy place. It's relaxed and food and drink options are also good. I liked the duck preparation. Staff members are also knowledgeable and friendly. However, the place is little overpriced.
Felicity Williden
The food here is absolutely delicious! Everything is made fresh onsite including things like the spring rolls and curry puffs, and you can really taste the difference! We tried 5 different dishes, and they were all better than what I've had anywhere else in Melbourne. The atmosphere is nice, the staff are lovely, and the food is very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend for a date night or a family dinner, but be sure to book because it's very popular!
Steven Carrier
Nice enough food, friendly enough staff. We ordered the duck, tasty, but very simple for the price. We also ordered the fish on Chinese broccoli, again tasty but very small portions, for $25 I'd expect a decent portion, it was a starter size. Never great paying $62 and leaving hungry.
Krystal
Pretty good tasty food. Service was good. Only problem was how long it took for our food to come out. Had to ask about our food twice but the manager was very apologetic and she compensated with a free drink. I will definitely go back again.

Better than expected!

I usually wouldn't try this type of venue. A type of Asian fusion with quick and friendly service.

Meals and decor were also above par, the venue was showing some signs of age and can can get a little noisy.

Overall not the worst choice of venue in the immediate area but there are better options. There was just no "wow" factor about anything.
Lizziebtookan
This was our second time at Taxiboat and it is still fantastic. Possibly the friendliest wait staff and at the end of the night we met the owner who was just lovely as he chatted about the new technology Albert which makes it easy for customers to split bills. The food was excellent, entree prawn dumplings were so fresh and plump, mains Yakitori Ginger Beef was tender and spicy, delicious. Only the rice was a little dry but overall the meal was really lovely. Love this place after seeing a film at the Westgarth.
Faith-Eloise
Fantastic!!
Have never eaten here before and picked the place off UberEATS. We weren't disappointed.
The lemongrass chicken and the chilli basil prawns were both really fresh and tasty.
Will definitely order again, and also eat in the restaurant!
FoodN
This place used to be better. We found the service to be good. The food was average though. The entrees were tasty (spring roll/ dim sum). The mains almost tasted like something you could make using a packaged sauce: beef stir fry was quite sweet, red duck curry was too thick and creamy and it only had 3 pieces of duck (more like a potato and mushroom curry). In no rush to return.
Shaz&kaz
I love this place! Been acouple of times, it's so dim and romantic, different vibe to the usual busy Melbourne cafes/restaurants! Prefect for a date! The food was really good, would happily eat here again!!!
Sarah Nolan
Amazing food, had it twice via uber eats, only took 20 minutes on a Saturday night to brunswick. Fried rice is super tasty, cannot fault it!
Danielle Wilson
Great service. Yum fresh food. The rockling with sweet sake was the winner for us. the golden fried chicken wouldve kicked serious ass if it has some chilli bite to it, but overall it was a great meal.

My partner and I have been visiting Taxiboat for years and have always recommended it to friends as the food is fresh and authentic. Unfortunately we received the most awful customer service last night and will not be returning. We initially tried to call the restaurant to order for pickup - we tried calling 7 times over the space of an hour with no answer. From there we looked online to see if we could place an order, we initially tried Uber Eats however their vegetarian options were not available so instead we ordered from Eat Now. When we arrived to pick up our food the waitress confirmed that our meals were vegetarian. We drove home to Brunswick and discovered both dishes were meat. We drove back to the restaurant in Northcote and explained that the order we received was incorrect - staff then argued amongst themselves as to who put the order through. Finally the waitress offered to remake our meals, I asked if we could possibly receive a discount as we had just driven back and forth to Brunswick twice - she agreed that they would of course reimburse us. The manager then came over and told us that he would not be giving us any discount as he does not make any money from Eat Now, and he in fact does not have an account with Eat Now. The tone in which he spoke was aggressive and extremely unprofessional - he left both myself and my partner feeling horrible. I understand that mistakes do happen but the manner in which they are dealt with are so important. Taxiboat saved themselves a few dollars last night but lost repeat customers.
Melbourne And Me
This has to be one of the best little finds in the Northcote area. Cosy restaurant opposite the west garth theatre. I have been here so many times and it never disappoints. The menu has so many great meals to choose from. The highlights is the crispy shredded beef, heaven duck, the dumplings and the curries and pretty much everything on the menu.
Green Gourmet Giraffe
At the end of the night I felt that I had been served a delicious meal that was in no way inferior to the meat dishes. One of the group was gluten free and was also happy with her meal. The (vegetarian) banquet cost $38 per head and was very good value. The service was prompt and pleasant and we all left in good spirits.
Jelly
What a beautiful little restaurant this is. We enjoyed everything we ordered from the menu. Absolutely loved the lamb ribs so delicious with the meat falling off the bone. The atmosphere is cosy and romantic and the waitress who served us so warm and friendly. Will definitely return again soon.
Amy Caitlin Browning
Outstanding! Best Thai I've had in ages. Bbq pork dumpling was delicious & the shredded beef was perfectly crisp & not oily at all. Fantastic service. Will definitely go again, but make a booking!
Kiwi Living In The Big Smoke
The food, service and atmosphere was amazing. Highly recommend. Will be going again.
Mr And Mrs S
Came on a Thursday night when TaxiBoat has a great special on - appetizers + main = $21.80
Which is only half the price of the bottle of wine. Honestly ive paid more for a bottle of water at an event.

But rest assured the quality of your meal isnt sacrificed due to these great prices. We had the terryaki chicken, cantonese beef, green curry and satay lemongrass (we shared, i didnt eat it all myself... ok i ate most) which were all so yummy.
warm decor and lively chatter were also a plus.

Would we come back? Always.
Rated this restaurant 4.5
Angelo Di Lorenzo
This is a great place.
We have had dinner here many times and it never disappoints. Thursday nights is fixed price entrée and main. Great value .
Entrées are delicious and the mains are great for sharing.
Dj Meowmeow
Terrible and over priced. Ordered two wonton soups and both tasted like water and the wontons were disgusting. Two tiny pieces of spinach too...Never again.

We went on valentine's day with all my friends and family. Very friendly staff and accommodating. Excellent food very fast service. Really liked and cosy environment. Good interrior. Higly recommended
Helen Fuller
Reliably delicious food, and wonderfully friendly staff. Always willing to go out of their way to make you comfortable/happy, regardless of if they're under pressure or not. Buzzing atmosphere. Another good Westgarth staple.
Nadia82
Delicious food, friendly staff, nothing more to say! Will definitely be back! Went for dinner with some friends and we were very happy with everything.
Hilarey Barton
Good decor with great waitstaff that are very friendly and helpful.

I went here with two vegetarians who ordered their own noodle dishes which left me ordering my own main from the "share" dishes which can be a little annoying as it does limit the vegetables available without paying for two mains. The spring roll starter was delicious and when my teriyaki chicken (recommended by the waitress when i couldnt choose between that and a beef dish) arrived it did come with a generous serving of bok choy so that was a relief.

It was a solid tasting teriyaki chicken, nothing spectacular but also nothing to complain about.
Katie Wilkinson
Great atmosphere, nice food however not the best. The staff were very accommodating, we ordered the green chicken curry, Singapore noodles and fired rice. The green curry was nice, although we ordered prawns and were accidentally given chicken it was still good. The Singapore noodles had a very mild taste and needed a bit more flavour. The fried rice didn't really have that much flavour and the prawns in it were flavourless.
FoodiE
Cute, cosy place. Food was great so was service. The only thing disappointing was the sticky date pudding was too small :)
Maxi
We dine here regularly and the food is consistently good. The dumplings are excellent; plump morsels that are full of flavour. We hope they put the prawn spring rolls back on the menu as they were a favourite. San choi bao is delicious as is the kung pao chicken which packs a punch with its whole chillies. So many great dishes on the menu that gives us a reason to keep going back.
Natmusicfan
Do not visit this restaurant! Bad staff!. Having visited this resturant tonight, I will not be back ever again, and will not recommend it to anyone.
My party of diners had to share the front dining area with a loud, rude group of other diners that had brought along 3 loud, squealing, disruptive children under the age of about 4 years old. These children were allowed free regin of the resturant with loud, squealing, disruptive behaviour on and off for nearly 2 hours, without a word being said by the staff to the parents of these children.

As the staff had done nothing to stop this behaviour, I myself had to have a word to the parents, who throught they were doing no wrong. At 10.30pm, when I was paying my bill, the children were still unrestrained and noisy. I asked the 3 wait staff why they would not say anything to the parents. They advised it was not their position to say anything, and it was up to the parents to deal with their own children. They had no consideration for the enjoyment any of the other diners in the resturant.

If you like your resturants with a McDonalds playground type atmosphere on a Saturday night, this is the place for you. If you want adult dining, without disruptive behaviour and poor staff, there are many other better resturants in Melbourne.
FoodSwingers
First time at this restaurant and I must say I am totally impressed. Top quality food, amazing flavors, good value and great atmosphere. Definitely a favorite.
Matthew Connolly
Go on a Thursday. Entrée and main for $21 on Thursdays which is good.
Food is generally good but not particularly cheap unless you get the deal on Thursday.
Alcohol is a bit pricey too.
SuzyQ
Just getting better and better. We have been eating out at Taxiboat for years and feel it just gets better and better. The service, freshness and generous serve of crisp veggies with every main meal makes this place a Stand-out. We particularly like the Cantonese beef and Teriyaki chicken. Oh and as for those prawn dumplings - yummo. Only issue is the beer is costly compared to some other restaurants. We will be back.
Deanricho_1999
Festivus - Really Fresh. Really good Asian mix
Super fresh and a big tic from me
$10 corkage ouch!!!!!!! .....common sense got that sorted
MGM
Friday night date night. Cute place, food is good / ok, nothing super special but nice decor and byo wine. Reasonably priced, food standard probably on par with standard takeaway quality. Friendly service.
Tim
I dont like it !!!!
Renata Perini
Lovely food!. Absolutely lovely food! Gluten free friendly which is a huge bonus! Very reasonably priced too! Definitely coming back
PJC
Went for romantic dinner. Superb food, wine and ambience. Will defiantly be back. What else is there to say?
Megan M
Great little local, love the wonton noodle soup and laksa. The dumplings are always a good choice to start - consistently nice and fresh!
The Oracle
In eachothers back pockets. The food is above average, but just short of having me come back as there are so many great ones out there.
Service is friendly and efficient, all the usual thai fare, with a few specialties of the house.
Only downside, the tables are so close together , the line is blurred from is the adjoining table with my party or are they on their own, tables far far too close together and the place has a claustrophobic feel, and prices are up there , for a thai curry etc, and portions are small but worth a visit. Great pity one can't have a rivat conversation when the tables are less than 10 inches from eachother...
Olive The Cat
Great atmosphere and the food was delicious. Our favourite was the rockling with Thai sweet chilli plum, it was to die for. We will definitely be a back.
CR
Mediocre. Chinese food for foreigners, not particularly bad, not particularly good. Certainly not particularly creative or fusion. Just... meh. Staff seemed bored and uninterested. Lots of better Chinese places around.
Mango
Nice atmosphere, food is tasty but small portions and overpriced.
We needed to grab a bite elsewhere after our meal!
Darth
Beware the $10 Corkage ~ !. $10 a bottle corkage ~ ridiculous. It is not mentioned on their website so is very devious. Also - they do the "let's share" trick i.e. go with a group of 10 for the banquet and they give you 7 person's worth of food. The final insult ~ my girlfriend nearly broke a tooth crunching on the soil they had not washed out of the salad. Choose any other restaurant in Westgarth.
Pea22
*****. What more can we say: FANTASTIC!!!
Renata Elizabeth
A lovely surprise before a movie. We randomly picked Taxiboat as it is opposite the Westgarth Palace cinemas. The $21 special for entree + main was the drawcard. Attentive service, beautiful presentation, and so much flavour. i had the pork dumplings and the green chicken curry. i actually licked the dumpling bowl with my fingers a few times! Best value for best food I've had in ages.

Really good!. We had dinner at Taxiboat recently for the first time and were not disappointed. The staff were lovely, the service was very good and the food delicious. An added bonus was having plenty of gluten free options to choose from which were clearly marked on the menu. The restaurant is quite small and unlike some others I've been to they haven't tried to cram in as many tables as they possibly can which is great. My only criticism would be that it's quite noisy.
Sarah Callinan
Fantastic. Organised a last minute birthday dinner here last night, despite us having cancelling guests the service was really lovely. Everyone loved their food which was delicious and in very big servings. The Thursday night deal is also great value for money - really highly recommended.
Glenn Jackson.
Had a great meal serviced by friendly staff. The servings are very reasonable and the flavoir a authentic. Will make this one a regular visit.
Heartagram_angel
Cute & Good Food. Went here on a attempt to have a romantic dinner... unfortunately there was a table of 7 people who overpowered the room. However, the food was lovely and there was attentive but not pushy service. Will definetly go again.
Speccy
Very satisfying. Great service, and chicken mango curry was AMAZING. I am very full atm due to the fantastic large portions!
Megs
Taxiboat is one of our locals and it is consistently good. The service is great, food delicious, fresh & tasty & well priced. The rockling is amazing and the lemon tart was a lovely way to end. We have travelled Asia several times & this food is some of the best Asian we've eaten. We'll be back soon.
Gin
Ignore the popcorn. Random walk-ins as the movies spill out are obviously a common occurrence here, as the wait-staff efficiently found us a table and got food happening fast. Large serves, fresh food, high quality vegetables (though some of the Asian greens were a little tough). Prawns were delish, and much, much better than a boxful of popcorn in the dark.
Lynnette Day
Really impressed. What a great place for date night. food was simply delicious with the menu specialities being red duck curry, loved the mango chicken and stayed for tea and deserts which was great. great food, great ambience, great service. can't wait to be back when i'm in that part of town again!
Marge77
The mango chic curry was delicious.
Absoloodle
Liked it. Been past here a million times and were stuck for a place to eat before the movies. Was surprised at how delish our meals were. Will return.
Sue From Plenty
Quick Dinner before Movie. Needed somewhere quick to have a meal before early Mpvie at Westgarth Cinema and booked Taxiboat. From the moment we arrived the staf were very welcoming and accommodating on that we had limited time. We had the Salmond and avacardo spring rolls which were really good. My husband and I then share the Teriarki Chicken and the Beef And Ginger dishes which were both lovely ( my husband is very hard to please )
Would certainly be returning with some friends to enjoy this place more as we were sorry ww could not stay longer.

I hesitate to say that I don't like Taxiboat..it's groovy (do folks still say grrovy?), it's in Westgarth, which is worth 10 points even before you arrive..,and it's Asian fusion and popular etc, etc... But call me anti-social coz I don't like sitting 18 inches from the noisy table of 6 next to me...and needing to yell at my partner across an overly small table to be heard. Food ok.,,but sorry, won't be back.

I couldn't honestly say I disliked Taxiboat, but I didn't love it either. Admittedly it was a busy Sat night, but the noise was literally deafening with all the hard surfaces and we were crammed in tighter than sardines. The service however was exemplary, that went a long way toward making it a pleasant evening. However, the ultimate test is would I return? Not in a hurry :(

Disgruntled staff. We arrived at Taxiboat to use livingsocial.com vouchers.
The restaurant decor was very cute and we were initially very impressed with the atmosphere and menu.

Unfortunately the tall male waiter serving was rude and unhelpful. When asked what non-alcoholic beverages the restaurant served he replied "the usual" rudely.

The waitstaff were reluctant to offer help and often made snarky comments under their breath after serving the table.

After providing very limited customer service throughout the meal the male waiter then quibbled with the amount that our table tipped per head.

The food was lovely, however our experience was spoilt by the disgruntled staff.

Seriously Yum. We went here last night for an early dinner after a really busy weekend. The waitress was great and the space itself is cute and just the right size - enough tables so you can't hear yourself talking but not large enough to get to busy. It's design also favours smaller groups with the largest table there last night being 5 people.

We had the chicken & chive dumplings and the salmon spring rolls for starters. Both good. We then had the Thai basil prawns and a beef dish. Both were delicious. The wine was good and everything was reasonably priced. There were 3 or so deserts including lemon tart and sticky date pudding however we were too full and opted just for a coffee which was good.

We'll definitely be back; it's the perfect location for a pre/post movie meal ... in fact I'd pick a movie time just so we could go back there!

What a little gem. Quaint decor, cosy, warm, well thought out and set out, great service, great value for money, fantastic food. Highly recommend this place for lovers of spice and all things 'Asian-fusion' nice.

Awesome experience. We have been to Taxiboat a few times now.
The ambience is warm and cosy and the food is consistently great.
The san choi baos is really tasty. We also love the green curry which is flavoursome. Taxiboat does this exceptionally well and the green curry stands out amongst that offered by other restaurants.

We were pleasantly surprised by Taxiboat's new dessert offering. Taxiboat has had an amazing sticky date pudding but its flourless chocolate and cointreau cake blew our minds. This cake was moist and rich and served with syrup in a shot glass. When poured over the cake, the combination left a warm tingling sensation in our mouths.

We'll definitely be back for more.

Groovy Asian in Northcote. It was 8.30 and we wondering where to get a bite to eat, we looked up restaurants in Northcote and after looking at the website, we thought let's do it.
Well, we were not disappointed, they had a table available at short notice which was fantastic. When you enter the restaurant, it feels warm and friendly as we were greeted by a lovely young waitstaff who quickly led us to our table and orders were taken promptly once we'd made our decisions. We ordered the Rockling fish with soy mirin, sake and lemongrass complemented by a side of bok choi. The fish was cooked in a light batter and tasted beautiful with the sauce. We also had the Pad thai with chicken with a serving of plain roti to complement. This hawker style cuisine was super tasty and worked well with the rockling. We had a serve of Jasmine rice to mix with the both main meals. We chose a serving of the Lemon tart with two scoops of ice cream for dessert finishing a lovely meal on a sweet note.
All in all, Taxiboat has a good feel, excellent service and very tasty food with reasonable pricing.

Good but expensive. Taxiboat has been a regular for us for along time, I think the previous owner did it better but things are improving. Last night we had dumplings, they were delicious, then had fish and calamari, both good....but nearly $100 for that and 2 glasses of wine was expensive.

Nice joint but a little pricey. We found taxiboat OK, the service & ambience were great, but the food was a little overpriced.

Plusses: the decor and ambience were very well-done, it felt cosy and private. The service was excellent - friendly, fast but not obstrusive. The Rockling with sweet sake was excellent: succulent fish encased in a thin crispy tempura batter with a delicious sweet dark sake sauce, with bok choy on the side.

Minuses: For only 2 small vegie spring rolls to a serve for $7 I would have expected something better, but they were just OK. The fried tofu with mixed greens in oyster sauce was a bit of a disappointment, especially considering it was $18. The tofu & vegies were fresh & well-cooked, but instead of the dark & salty oyster sauce I was expecting, they were drowned in that bland gelatinous grey sauce that seems ubiquitous in Chinese cooking. The 3 dishes plus 2 glasses of pinot (average) were $70, not a fortune but a bit much for the quality I felt. Lastly, were given a spoon & fork to eat with, but the vegie pieces were much too big for a mouthful and impossible to cut without a knife - holding in chopsticks at least would have been a bit more practical.

Overall it gets a "like" because of the service, and because nothing was bad - would have been happy if the meal had been $15-20 cheaper.

Rock The Boat. We had the red duck curry and I had a fish dish that escapes me right now. What I do remember quite clearly is how my fish was cooked to perfection and the red duck curry had a salty hit that smaked me across the face in just the right way. Everything was good about this place.
Tasty
Ventured to Taxiboat with my living social voucher in tow. Very quaint and cosy restaurant with modern finishings. We began with chicken San Choi Bao and chicken dim sum for our starters. Both were full flavoured and consumed very quickly. The Roast Duck on heaven and Salt & Pepper Calamari were fresh, tasty and generous. Desserts were delicious & a perfect end to the meal. Will definitely come visit again. Staff were also very attentive.

Headed in on a quiet Sunday night and had a really good meal. Dumplings were plump and full of recognizable prawns and veg. San choi bow was amazing. Red duck curry was alright, stir fry delicious. Good wines to suit. Good service but not with a lot of personality or flair, definitely a great waiter but a bit stiff. Decor is beautifully done, good work will be back

Pre movie dinner 1 June 2011. Excellent food, ambience and wine. Shame about the loud obnoxious bitchy girls in the corner! Will definitely return to try the other dishes!

I Eat Therefore I Am
94 High Street Northcote, VIC 3070 Ph: 9482 7882 I was invited to try out Taxiboat, an Asian restaurant out in Northcote. I asked my new chef friends from Steer to come along and help me sample the food. We all had a bit of trouble finding Taxiboat, but I can now inform you that it's on High Street near the Hoddle Street end. When I first walked into the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised. I can't say that I think much of the decor in most Chinese restaurants, usually consisting of neutral coloured walls of pink or peach, hideous wall hangings and statues, and specials plastered all over the wall. However, Taxiboat had a very nice sophisticated look, with a striking red top lit sign drawing you in. A table at the front with a large vase of flowers really worked for me. It acted as an initial focal point and actually broke up the space really well. Tables in the middle row of restaurants usually feel quite isolated, like you're on an island, but this table of flowers helped to break
