I love this beautiful cafe on busy High St. With it's large open space, and gorgeous courtyard it has a comfortable ambience and a fresh and clean look; with it's white walls, natural light and fresh greenery. There is plenty of comfortable seating and the communal table is very roomy. I found the service to be really efficient and the staff were really lovely and welcoming.
We were keen to try some of the new dishes created just in time for spring, and we weren't disappointed. After starting with fantastic coffee, we settled on three amazing dishes. The veg bowl was an abundance of colours and textures and so fresh and delicious. With it's mix of tasty greens, beetroot, cauliflower and avocado; as well as quinoa, chickpeas and a fabulous, zingy dressing. Such a perfect healthy bowl for the warmer weather.
Our main dish was the spring gnocchi which was a fun alternative for brunch. Little golden pillows served with fabulous fresh greens, asparagus and broccolini as well as a beautifully poached egg and plenty of sharp cheese. Gnocchi for brunch is a genius idea, and one that I fully embrace. A traditional comfort food treated with lighter ingredients makes this the ultimate spring dish, and these little pillows of fluffiness were absolutely divine.
We finished with the warm granola crumble, and it truly was sublime. Warm apple and rhubarb topped with a crunchy oat granola was a delicious way to finish our brunch. I love the tartness of rhubarb, and the toasted granola was filled with a great mix of grains, fruits and nuts. Such a pretty bowl, and just as tasty as it looked.
There was a small glitch with the power while we were there, but the staff were very accommodating and explained that there may be a delay; however our food arrived in good time and definitely lived up to our expectations. Northcote has a reputation for having a lot of fabulous cafes, and Field Black is certainly up there with the best. Great food and a lovely, friendly environment make it the kind of cafe that is loved by locals and visitors alike. We know that we will happily return, and look forward to our next visit.
Went in for a late lunch, the host was amazingly welcoming. Relaxed atmosphere, absolutely one of the best coffees i've had in a while around Melbourne. I ordered the Gnocchi, and my partner had the Korean Spiced Chicken Croissant, absolutely stunning dishes with loads of flavours. Huge thumbs up, will be returning for sure. Highly recommend!!!
pleasant spot to smash caffeine and get some work done. only comment I'd have is the (presumed) owner can be a bit intensely over attentive sometimes when you just wanna be left to it.

Favourite cafe in the northern suburbs. Spend far too much time here but the food, people and coffee is all delicious. Menu changes frequently with lots of yummies. Only fault would be the smoothie flavours
Ate here twice now. Most recent was the Portobello mushroom burger with halloumi, egg, bacon & salad with home style chips. Delicious food and really friendly staff. will be back!
Came to brunch with my daughter who was sleeping in the pram and was welcomed by the staff who told me to come and sit in the quiet area which was very nice, they have a small play area for the little ones.
I had the Smash Avo with a Almond latte, food was great and my almond latte was a 10/10 Probably one of the best Almond lattes I actually enjoyed it :).
To be above average in northcote these days is no mean feat. His place which opened last year is a little beauty. Small relaxed and welcoming, it has that inner city style without the pretension and the staff clearly enjoy being there. The coffee is very good without being truly mind blowing but the food is close to sensational. I had smashed avocado which you will find on any breakfast menu these days. But you won’t get a delightful mix of flavors like this, the olive bread toast, feta, a complex delicious relish, fresh basil leaves, slightly crunchy green tomatoes with mid orange and deep red tomatoes all creating just the right balance of salty, sweet and savory.

Gosh Northcote has changed since I used to live here. This was evidenced today with an exceptional range of unique dishes in a bright and breezy courtyard setting down the side of Field Black.
Today we started with a couple of coffees, the Padre beans were lovely, my almond latte was strong and creamy, just delicious.
For brunch we dined in the Chefs Crunchy Granola and OMG, this dish has to be the prettiest ganola I have ever been served. I felt like I was at the beach, the incredible blue spirulina coconut yoghurt is the most unique shade of blue and pairs perfectly with the crunchy nutty granola, peanut butter pretzel and blueberries. This granola is the perfect balance of sweet and salty and is wonderful with the coconut yoghurt.
We also had the Spring Has Sprung smashed avo with pumpkin sourdough, pea purée, poached egg, goats curd, hemp seed dukkah and soft herbs. The earthy flavours of this dish amaze, the greens (peas, broad beans, edamame, asparagus) work spectacularly well with the Meredith goats cheese and the citrusy avocado, this dish was fresh and tasty.
For brunch dessert we shared the Brûlée Banana Split hot cake. (It reminded me of a kids birthday). This cooked in the bowl hot cake was lovely and light with the most insanely incredible toppings. (From now on I only want to eat my bananas brûléed with a peanut brittle crumb)!. The brulle bananas were not too cooked and had that perfect texture with a sensational crunchy topping. The salted caramel and salted fudge pouring sauce stopped this dish being over the top sweet. For the kiwi confectionery fanatics you will love the inclusion of a perky nana chocolate bar in this dish too.
Easily better than any other cafe I have tried in Northcote and certainly deserving of your visit.
Great service. Great coffee. Incredible food - I had the breakfast burger and it was one of the nicest burgers I’ve ever had. I’ll definitely be going back for more!
If you seek to venture a bit deeper into Northcote you’ll find Field Black, a little cafe with an abundance of charm. With some pretty friendly staff and a kitsch interior I wasn’t sure what to expect!. There isn’t much space in the actual cafe and the space is quite echoey and loud so I wouldn’t recommend coming here for a one on one catch up or anything. The space does suit the space though as it is quite cosy. The staff are the type you’d find in a suburban spot, ultra friendly, attentiveness and dad jokes galore!

Firstly I want to start off by saying how amazing the owner and service he provided was, as soon as we walked in he was making jokes and making us feel very welcomed, it’s not often you get that special feeling when going into a restaurant/cafe so kudos to that
Secondly, the venue was beautiful and the court yard was a major plus for a sunny day! And lastly the food, how yummy! I ordered the Mac daddy and my friend got the Smashed Avo on Toast And it was so beautifully presented, I could go on and on with this place it was such a nice experience and I will for sure be back!
Lovely cafe with a nice ambience and modern interior. The cafe staff are very friendly and accommodating even when the cafe is busy. The coffee is really good!
Staff were very friendly and although our food took a while to come out due to a packed house, it was well worth the wait. Had the Mac Daddy and the Pulled Pork Benny and it was mouthwatering and very satisfying. Definitely coming back!!

Interesting menu with great coffee and wonderful service. Been there twice now for breakfast and both times our meals were excellent. Fantastic addition to the neighbourhood.
Awesome ‘new’ joint in Northcote (I’m a bit late to the party). Cool fit out. Service was great. Food, chai and coffee were great. The toast, which I believe is from the Northcote Bakeshop, was ah maze ing. And they had great tunes. Pretty keen to head back and work through the rest of the menu 👌
The food here is delicious and staff are so friendly! My new favourite local cafe. The smashed avocado is amazing, and I love that they have original menu items.
Had an enjoyable brunch date with the girls. It’s a delightful spot for delicious food and coffee! Particular standouts are the pancakes and the Mac and cheese croquettes 😍 The only thing that would’ve been an improvement is prompter coffee service, but other than that we had an exceptional experience :)
The food was incredible. The coffee was too.
The owner was so accommodating, our table of 6 grew to a table of 9 plus a pram at ‘brunch peak hour’ on a Sunday!

On a glorious Melbourne day, we decided to try the newly opened Field Black in High Street, Northcote.
We began our three course meal with the pulled pork sliders. These were amazing, with just the right amount of pork and great flavours.
I had read about the breakfast gnocchi so of course we had to try this. It was pretty as a picture with goats curd and season mushrooms, chilli herb butter and walnuts and topped with a fried egg. This was equally delicious.
We also tried the southern fried buttermilk chicken burger with red crunchy slaw, mayo and sweet potato fries. Yum!
And finally for dessert, a raw sampler of dragon fruit with strawberry, vegetarian chocolate cake and a papaya ball. These were very nice but not the stand out of the meals.
We finished our afternoon with awesome Coffee by Padre.
Service was very friendly and efficient despite being very busy. Decor was great providing a lovely ambience. Thumbs up for the plating of the dishes also.
We look forward to coming back soon!
Been here three times now and food has been amazing every time. Service is always great and the breakfast gnocchi is amazing. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.
Love Field Black. Interesting and delicious food items - breakfast gnocchi is a winner! The last time I was here I had it with chorizo and feta, the new menu has seasonal mushrooms and egg. Both brilliant. And great to see a cafe changing its menu seasonally. Excellent service. Definitely a winner in a part of Thornbury that needs it.

Amazing coffee and great gluten free options. Excellent customer service. Soft herb scrambled is my favourite. Easy to park on Hight St and close to public transport.

Decided to visit Field Black, and wasn’t disappointed what so ever.
The soy flat white was beautiful, with just the right amount of froth.
As for the Puku-Kai Bowl, it was understatedly delicious.
All the components of the dish complimented so well with one another; from the brushstroke of kale hummus, to the in-house pickled vegetables, and not to mention the smoked almonds.
The dish its self was also very filling, and was very happy to pay $17.50.
Between the friendly and inviting service from the staff, & the incredible quality of food I know I’ll be back again (with The Chef next time ‘round).
Outstanding service. Coffee is delicious. Menu is really interesting - so many things I’d like to try. I’ve had the superfood salad - delicious and really filling. I’ve also had the pulled pork eggs Benedict - which was amazing - full of flavor.
I will definitely be back to try more.
Great menu with classics and some interesting dishes. Our food and coffee were excellent. We brought our dog and sat in the relaxed courtyard. All staff were super friendly and helpful.

I can't fault the food or service, we had a excellent lunch today, highly recommend the gnocchi. very pleased that this new cafe is so close to home, will become a regular lunch spot!
The food, coffee and service was amazing! Was in the area and came for breakfast and lunch, once had the breakfast gnocchi which was divine, so many flavors, definitely recommend. And the pulled pork eggs benedict was great, they topped it with jalapenos which I think makes the dish exceptional. Definitely going to visit this place again soon!
If you haven't tried Field Black yet, you need to! The coffee is the best I've had is a long time, the food is delicious and well presented (Hotcakes were Amazing!). We felt so welcomed, the staff where inviting and the atmosphere is lovely. Amazing fit out also, a must try in the North!

Great little cafe, with excellent coffee and nice food options. The service was nice and friendly. It is relatively quiet and has wifi so it’s a great place if you are looking to do some work.
It’s quite hard to see Field Black if you are driving along High St because there’s scaffolding up on the building next door. But look hard because it’s definitely worth a visit.
Kids and I had the pulled pork eggs Benedict (10/10 according to the 12 year old who is a self-proclaimed ppork expert), fritters and pancakes. All tasty and we would order them again. Importantly the coffee is good.
I’d like to try the passionfruit panna cotta next time. Because it looks as pretty as Tinker’s mango saffron highly photographed dish, but my experience of Tinker’s dish was a bit of a let down (overcooked granola). Maybe the weekend crowds should take a trip down the hill and try this place....not anywhere near as self conscious either.

The frittas were pretty tasty! My own dessert dish was refreshing on a hot day, with different textures of crunch from the granola and the passionfruit panna cotta! Looking forward to coming back!
Really nice space and friendly service. Meal was interesting fresh and delicious. Would have preferred my avocado less creamy and more chunky/smashed but that’s a small thing. Also less noisy toys for the kids to play with would be more relaxing 🤣🤣. I’ll be back for sure 👍🏼

Ordered the french toast and eggs benedict between the two of us, and as soon as the food came out we were just blown away by the beautiful presentation!
Every ingredient of the dishes was so fresh and was important to the dish. You could tell how much thought the chef has put into planning the dishes.
The coffees were also great. The ambience of the cafe is lovely too, as the decor is gorgeous and the environment just feels great.
The waitress who served us was extremely polite and sweet.
10/10 recommend!
Had the Philly beef and the shakshuka. I preferred the Philly beef. It's pretty filling for one person though. The waffle chips are yummy. The watermelon berry smoothie is light and refreshing too. The shakshuka is alright. It didn't stand out and I didn't like the taste that much.

Was there for the breakfast... Chilli scrambles eggs...and it was different from most places so was quite good...
only downside for me in the dish was too much Kimchi... Rather it on the side the covering the plate.
Otherwise, friendly staff and nice restaurant... Definitely give it a go.
Very delicious Smashed Avo and Acai Bowl! They offer creative and delicious variations of these popular brekky meals, highly recommend to go and try it out. Friendly staff, great service and coffee. Will be back for sure.
